THE BEST PROFESSOR AT UMBC ...
she will make you love statistics. She explains material clearly and makes everything clear to understand. Gives a lot of review that are helpful. Take this class with her, will learn a lot.
She's awesome. Explained the material well and is definitely a class to take.
Awesome professor. Kept STAT interesting and the quizes and exams we exactly what she taught. A little effort on your part but if you pay attention during class you should be able to easily pass this class with this professor.
She looks like Donna from That 70's Show. She's always encouraging asking questions and is extremely helpful. I like her as a professor.
Awesome professor! I'm not typically great at math, but she explains everything clearly, answers questions and includes good examples, and makes statistics interesting. I am very exicited to be doing well in her class!
She is very good. She is very helpfull and try to make as simple as she can.
She teaches the class like an elementary school teacher but with college statistics material. She's so easy to understand and very helpful. Her exams are ridiculously easy. My STAT200 class was so much harder than this one. If you have to take STAT351, do not take it with anyone else but her unless you want to make things hard on yourself.
I have no words to describe how nice she is. Very clear, extremely helpful, teaches what you need to know in detail so EVERYONE can understand. (YES, EVERYONE- NOT JUST MATH GIGS). Ms Stanwyck, It was a blessing taking your course. THANK YOU!!!!
Awesome professor! Very down to earth and really tries to make sure everyone understands. Her ppts are incredible and do an excellent job of simplifying the book while highlighting exactly what you need to know. She lets you know exactly what you need to know for all quizzes and tests. I will try to take more classes from her in the future.
Liz Stanwyck is an amazing young professor. She is enthusiastic about what she teaches, has great energy and takes time for any student questions in and out of class. I recommend her and praise her to everyone. I will take her again for 453. She is simply outstanding.
Awesome professor. Amazing curve at the end of the class and very easy to get an A in if you try at all.
There is no curve, I had an 89 and got a B... not very organized... overall not bad, but not as great as what these guys are saying, if you take her winter class its a blitz and overwhelming at times
Killed my gpa last semester. apparently a good stat teacher, as for calc -.- I missed 6 classes & it hurt me soooo much. it could be just be me but calc with stanwick was VERY hard.. hard to approach her cuz her presence/vibe's intimidating. but she lets you correct some of your midterm for some extra points. quizzes = hard after the first one! >:[
Professor is a good teacher, she will help with any questions you might have in the class. Alot of busy work and these labs that take a whole week to accomplish.
She is an amazing professor. Her lectures notes are very clear and she is willing to help. Her quizzes and exams are just like the practice so do those and you will be fine.
Excellent in every way. Organized and on time to every class. Very energetic about what she teaches. Crystal clear on every point. Exams are exactly what she teaches. She only asks you know the material, she doesnt require you to do tedious algebra on tests. Excellent class, even if you dont like math you will like her, guaranteed.
This teacher is the best for this class. Honestly I am bad at math and I had a tutor for the whole semester and I passed the class. The materials aren't too bad and she is willing to help a lot. She definitely notices you in class and it helps a lot if you show up at her office. great teacher easy passing
I had Prof Stanwyck also for Stat so I knew she was gonna be great for math. Her exams match the homework problems online. The only thing I didnt like was going to discussion which the only purpose for it was to work labs. But I would recommend Stanwyck as a professor.
Great professor! I was concerned about taking a 400 level compressed summer course, but it was not bad. Weekly quizzes based on the non-graded homework which are not too bad. Liz Stanwyck is energetic and happy to answer any questions! I would recommend this course, she makes what could be a very dry course interesting and engaging.
Great attitude, genuinely seems to love what she does and makes it easy for you to love it too. She was open to meeting outside of class for a little extra help when needed, and was super animated during lectures. Very hard to fall asleep in her class, which is good because the material is insanely difficult.
Careful when taking her class, you do not get curves, last semester about 60% of the class had failed. the class avg of the first test was about a 28/50. the 2nd exam was pretty much the same. She is really difficult but she does try her best to help you in any way possible.
Passionate about the subject and has high expectations for her students. The downside of this is that she often assumes that you are stat wizards like she was. However, statistics is difficult to teach for any professor. She cares for her students and encourages them to come to her office hrs for help. HW is optional, DO IT ANYWAYS.
FALL 2012: AWESOME Professor. If you attend class and take notes, the exams/quizzes shouldn't be too hard. I honestly never liked calc and I ended up getting an A in the course. She goes out of her way to help; utilize office hours and tutoring! (My TAs were horrible though). Didn't use the textbook much because exams are very similar to notes.
Best Math teacher I've had in awhile. If you do poorly on her exams its probably because you didnt go to class or listen. She explains things VERY clearly and makes sure that you understand it. Very passionate and likes to move around when she lectures. Overall, THE BEST
good teacher, but hard class, sometimes the exams are easy (if she follows the sample exam)
This is a challenging course, but Dr. Stanwyck is great. She will answer questions via email and allow you to set up appointments to meet with her one-on-one to go over problems. Quizzes can be challenging, but exams follow the format of the practice exams. She makes the course enjoyable- I highly recommend it to any math/stat major!
One of the best teachers i had. Very helpful. Talks rly fast but very comprehensive. Give you pratice sheets(not graded). Must study practice sheets. I had a quiz the was exactly the same as the pratice sheet questions word from word. Replies emails fairly quickly. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EASY A!!!
She's a greater teacher. Just do all your work, go to class and pay attention and study. She gives out study guides before tests. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY THEM. THEY ARE KEY.
Love this teacher! She was very clear, helpful, and understanding. She answers any questions emailed to her promptly. A very nice lady. Kind of hyper but it makes the class entertaining. You don't really need your book. I never even opened mine. I highly recommend this teacher!
She was a great teacher, really passionate about math and always very clear in explaining problems. She is funny and engaging in class. Quite an easy class, do the homework and there is extra credit offered. Group projects can be tough if you have a bad group. If you put a little work, you will get an A!
She is the best math instructor I have ever had. 1st and 2nd exam were easy, 3rd was very difficult.
She is really easy to talk to and is very helpful. The content can get confusing but if you do the homeworks and ask for help it isn't too bad. Her projects are fairly easy. Recommended.
This professor is just simply amazing. She is VERY helpful and answers emails really fast. Very easy going and understanding. The class is fairly hard but this is due to the class material itself. DO THE PRACTICE SHEETS she hands out in discussions - it will help you in the quizzes and even exams. Online HW is a lot harder than her tests. Take her!
AMAZING professor! I wish ALL of my professors were like her. I'm not even a math major, and seriously feared taking another math class since high school, but I am so glad I did with her! She is very clear, helpful, cheerful, and this experience has helped me realize that I am good in mathematics. Come to class, take through notes, and do the hw!
I am not a math major nor a math fan at all, but Dr. Stanwyck made this class pretty easy all in all. She had some issues with class cancellations this semester (three of them), which disrupted the flow, but she more than made up for it with pushing back HW. Very, very good professor, HIGHLY recommended.
She is awesome! She makes math fun! Definitely recommended!
Love her! Had her for MATH 155 and have her for STAT 351. She can move really quickly, so make sure to attend lecture and follow what she's saying. She assumes that you know the material and will treat you as such. Very helpful outside the classroom, responds to e-mail quickly, very professional and accommodating.
TAKE HER! She is one of the most nicest and understanding professors you will ever come across. I took her for Math 155 twice, failed the first time because I slacked off bad, and decided to take her again, and passed with a B! Now I'm taking her for Statistics, and although the hybrid format of the class can be tricky, she's worth it!
Stanwyck is so nice and charismatic, she wants you to pass. She does move really quickly during the lecture though, but she does stop sometimes and ask if you have questions, but she made it clear what was going to be on the tests based off the discussion quizzes.
She is such an awesome professor. Always willing and ready to help. She employs the "there is no stupid question" mantra and answers every questions as clearly as possible. She is very charismatic and actually wants you to do well. Make sure and keep on top of pre-reading quizzes, those add up in the end!
One of the best professors I've had. She clearly explains everything. Her theory is that people who are bad at math just didn't understand a single concept and never caught up after the class moves on, so she addresses everything really well. She is funny with exciting lectures too.
Don't take Math 155 or Stat with anyone else. She's AMAZING! She's always willing to help, all you have to do is go to her office. She's understanding, and is always there to help her students succeed!
Her class is very easy, but she moves very quickly. Her quizzes look like the practice quizzes on Blackboard. Make sure to do the study guide for exams because her exams may have questions from there.
Great teacher. Do the practice quizzes and keep up with the reading. Pretty easy overall.
My all time favorite teacher. Extremely inspirational. 451 required very hardwork, but as long as u r trying, she'll do everybit to help understand. Make good use of office hrs. She's kind, generous, caring, & most of all super-excited for what she teaches. It's just so much fun to be around her. For me, she's a goddess & I'll never forget her..:)
Amazing teacher! Highly recommended! very interesting as well!
Excellent Teacher
I loved Professor Stanwyck! She was one of the nicest professors, I have had the pleasure of meeting. No matter how stupid the question, she would answer quite graciously. I could tell she genuinely enjoyed teaching math.
I read all of the reviews for Dr. Stanwyck on here and I thought at first it sounded too good to be true. However, I was pleasantly surprise this semester as Dr. Stanwyck completely blew me out of the water. Amazing professor, was always there to help anyone who had a question. Everyone should take her before graduating, you won't regret it at all.
Best teacher ever. Very clear, fair and interesting. Fantastic lectures. Do the work, and you'll get an A.
Worst professor at UMBC. She's the kind of professor that comes to class teaches doesn't care if people learn and goes on with her day. People would literally not pass quizes and she would blame it on them. Lectures are ambiguous and long. If you can't learn this material on your own then your going to fail this class.
Not a good professor. Her lectures are long and boring most students leave early or just don't pay attention because of the way she teaches. Super hard grader no curve at all. If you don't know stat 100% before entering the class be prepared to spend your whole semester on this class or take a low grade. Take a different professor
she is the best stat professor in UMBC. I took many stat classes with her. She will help you anytime, just walk in to her office and ask her. She is very patient and nice professor. DO NOT MISSING IT.
Professor Stanwyck is one of the best professors at UMBC! She is very helpful and her excitement in the class actually helped me pay attention and learn. I'm not a strong math student but she kept it straight forward and easy to understand. Just study and stay committed and everything should be okie dokie!
Stanwyck is so passionate and excited about teaching. Both classes I took with her were very challenging, but she is very helpful in office hours and gives you a lot of time in class to ask questions about the homework. Sometimes she talks about statistics in a way that is over my head, but other than that she is very helpful and fair.
She's not a hard teacher, she's very fair. She wants you to succeed so if you talk to her, she'll be really nice to you and help you calculate a way to pass the class. I really liked her and thought she was really nice, but she's not easy exactly.
She is absolutely lovely as a person, so full of energy. Without approaching her, I loved her lectures because she was so positive. She made me love math even more. If you've done some calc before, and you read the material, you should be good in this class. Everything is made for your success, and at so many levels. It really is an easy A!!
She is helpful when you ask, but if you suck at math no matter how hard you try, it's still difficult to get a grade that shows how much effort you put. Almost half the class failed the second exam, I passed yet my final grade is still a 'C' as if I'm like the average student in the class. Grading system sucks, and she won't bump you up.
Professor Stanwyck is a must! She really gives you EVERYTHING you need to successd and provides plenty of opportunities to earn extra points. Need help, she is there. Good math teachers are extremely rare, and I wish I had her for when I took Calc 1 & Calc 2. Apply yourself and ask questions, and you will succeed!!!
Dr. Stanwyck is GREAT! She really wants to make sure everyone understands what we're doing and is always super willing to answer questions. There are weekly homeworks (not graded) and weekly quizzes as well as group participation work on non quiz days. Not an easy class, but if you do the work, and take initiative to ask for help, you will do fine.
Dr. Stanwyck is a great! She's super nice and is always available for office hours. She's very enthusiastic during her lectures. Do ALL of the problems from the study guides when preparing for exams; she uses problems from there. If you don't understand an excel project, go and see her. This is a fast-paced class so go to SI/PASS if you need help.
she builds in A LOT of extra credit. Shes very upbeat and positive during lectures. I dont feel afraid to talk to her and ask her questions both inside and outside the classroom.
Dr. Stanwyck is an amazing professor who really knows her calculus. The way she moves around the class and talks you can tell she's really passionate about what she does. Although there are only 2 exams she gives lots of quizzes, weekly homework, and even projects so that your grade isn't weighed heavy in one area.
Dr. Stanwyck is one of the best. She really wants her students to succeed. She converted one of our office hours into an extra classroom hour for anybody who wanted to go over more problems. She constantly innovates in the classroom to keep it interesting. And she's probably the nicest person on campus.
Stanwyck is the best. Stat351 hybrid would be intolerable if it weren't for her. The textbook was bad, but Stanwyck makes up for it and really knows how to make things 'click'.
She is a very good professor, and it's actually fairly easy to get an A in the class. You don't even have to get A's on the exams. There are so many quizzes, projects, etc. so make sure you do good on those and do ALL your aressignments. I feel like I gained great math skills from this course too.
Great math teacher, even if you're not that great at math. She builds in a lot of extra credit into your tests. If you show up to class and do all the work, you should be able to get at least a B.
Liz is absolutely wonderful. This class is difficult and should really be 4 credits, but she still manages to teach well with the time given. She is very attentive to every student and cares about them all. Office hours are crowded, but helpful, and she sends you a copy of all the work done if you go. Homework not graded officially, but do it.
This professor is awesome she shows how much she cares for the class and willing to help you succeed.
Prof. Stanwyck is an excellent professor for math and she really makes the subject easy to understand! Even though this was a hybrid class, she taught the subject well. She knows that the Statistics subject is not a easy one but she tries to make it simple. Class had 3 exams and 6 quizzes and lots of homework. You have to spend alot of time on it
I'm not even a STAT major and this class was just amazing. Be prepared to do the work; Most of it is based on completion, but it really helps in the long run when it comes to the weekly quizzes and tests. Her lectures are amazing, and they're free participation points as well. If you're good at Calc III and need an out of major, look no further.
very nice, makes it easy to take notes by providing structured note sheets for you to fill out along with her in class. The class had a pattern of HW due Tuesday, short quiz on that hw on thursday. The quizzes are not difficult if you complete the hw, and the volume of them can help build a solid grade. Bonus points are often built into tests.
Dr. Stanwyck is an awesome professor! She really cares for how her students learns and is willing to stop lecture to help with questions. She has a great presence in lecture so it's never boring. However, there are quizzes every week but LAs literally go over what's on it right before it so it's not too bad.
I loved Stanwyck! She's my favorite professor I've had so far. She goes very slow and in-depth on the topics so that everyone can understand. The math itself was super easy but got harder closer to the end of the semester. Overall, I thought it was a great class and she made math more enjoyable. Seminars were annoying but easy points.
Great professor. Very enthusiastic but no matter how low the class average is on exams, she WILL NOT CURVE. Would take her again, really understanding and always willing to help
Definitely easier than MATH151! The class starts easy but requires a solid start to understand later chapters. Stanwyck is encouraging, she makes the subjects easy to understand. HW, classwork & a pretest balance your grade even if you suck at tests. Speaking of, the exams & quizzes were straightforward except for Exam 2 which was unusually hard...
Great professor, very accessible outside of class. Genuinely wants you to succeed and is a subject matter expert in math and statistics. Be prepared to study alot though. Her exams were INSANE but she explains everything thoroughly. Probably the best math professor at UMBC.
Retook this class after taking it with a horrible professor and Stanwyck made the class a 100 times easier. I did WAY better this time around and actually found myself going to lectures, when they weren't mandatory, because of the way shes able to teach. 100% would recommend and she is very nice to approach as well
Heard a lot of good things about Dr. Stanwyck, but her teaching method was not for me. I don't like the idea of her not giving out the answers to practice quizzes and sample exams to study, cause I'm not sure if I'm doing the material right. Also don't like the "classroom setting" office hours she gives, I prefer to meet with them one on one.
I failed Applied Calc twice at a different school. Stanwyck's enthusiasm was a breath of fresh air. The textbook is confusing, but you can rely solely on your notes from class. Just attend every lecture, take good notes, and ask questions. The tests are hard. Quizzes are fairly easy. Do every problem on the review packet. Go to office hours.
Legit the GOAT of all math teachers. 451 and 453 are among the most boring and difficult classes in STEM and yet she made it so much easier and fun. Never met someone more passionate and kind to teaching students. The class was hella hard but I would have failed if I took it with anyone different.
Makes STATA easy. She cares about what she teaches so her pre-recorded and live lectures are great and helpful, she gives great feedback on homework which is very long but very doable. She has her own discord server for outside of class making it insanely easy to get help. Probably the best teacher in the STAT department.
Stanwyck remains the goat. She could teach paint drying and I'd be there. Phenomenal lecturer, good notes she uploads from her iPad to Box, thoroughly goes through homework during class, and is incredibly reachable for office hours through her Discord server. Cares about every student's learning experience, and makes lectures lively, 453 is hard.
Overall just a terrible structured class by UMBC's math department. Goes way too fast and it is the first class I've ever had that hasn't had a single review day for any material before any quiz or exam. No reviews. No extra credit. Discussion is terrible as well. Overall a depressing experience.
She cares and wants students to learn the material well, but this class is HARD. MATH 155 goes fast! Homework and quizzes every week; Dr. Stanwyck doesn't give answer keys to practice quizzes and doesn't hold in-person office hours. If you're okay with that, then she's the best professor that teaches MATH 155, but her teaching style wasn't for me.
Very enthusiastic about the subject & cares about students. Takes her time to explain the material. things we don't get to in class she adds them in the quizzes and exams so you have to learn it yourself. 3 exams. quizzes every week. Provides study guide but no answer key. One downside about this class was how terrible and unhelpful my TA was.
Prof Stanwyck was a great prof in STAT451. There were weekly homeworks which were long and hard, but quizzes and exams were super easy. She is great!
Dr. Stanwyck is my favorite professor! She made calc fun and easy to grasp in every lecture. You have homework and quizzes every week and three exams, but the homework and practice problems are essential for studying! She is super loving, energetic, and a great communicator. You will succeed if you stay on top of everything and ask questions.
She is a kind person, but I don't feel she teaches the material effectively. She doesn't always take students' individual situations into account, and I found her approach to be unreasonable at times. The course material is difficult, and the class moves at a very fast pace, which made it hard for me to keep up.
