She's really nice and really cares about her students. It's a little difficult to get a hold of her outside of class, but she's good with email. I do wish she wouldn't have taught as much as she did with material that wasn't in the book and had started with the basics (like truth tables, etc.) rather than jumping straight into proofs.
I took her Cal I for CNS. Shes a good teacher (excellent at explaining) and really doesn't want you to just learn the rules (she spends a lot of time proving them). The first test was EASY, but the second was too long to finish in the allotted time. She curves & doesn't do plus/minus. Tests= 5 mult choice and rest are free response (partial cred)
She teaches basic problems during lecture and gives hard ones on homework. She also wastes a lot of time reteaching concepts that should be part of the prereq course. She also makes mistakes frequently during lecutre.
she wanted students to do well, but the hw was a killer, and both her and the TA's office hours were during my other classes so I couldn't get help from them. devoted the majority of my semester to math hw and then q-dropped b/c I had to ensure a high grade for a transfer into engineering. was fun though and encouraged students to learn. reccomend
I didn't get to take Calculus in high school which is why I didn't do as well as everyone else. She's a really good professor. Her tests are challenging but people who have taken Calculus before ace them. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! She's really helpful and she wants you to do well in her class. I loved her!
The class was pretty easy, she moves at a pretty slow pace. If you take notes in class and do at least the Quest homework you will know the material. If you do the bookwork too, then you will know it well and do well on the tests
The best math instructor ever. Listen to every advice she gives and trust me you will get a B or above.
Great Teacher... Go to class and ask questions, she loves it.. Test are just what she goes over and quest problems.
Best math teacher Ive ever had, so funny and sweet. She genuinely cares about math, and about her students. Requires a ton of homework, but its worth it to have such a good teacher.
Took stepp for precal. Its a lot of work with homework, learning modules, challenges and drills that are required and are a % of your grade. She really wants students to learn the material and explains very well. Keep up with the material and you will do fine.
Great Professor! very helpful and friendly. Smart in Math, very good in keeping you attentive. I strongly recommend this prof.
Stepp was GREAT! She helps her students so much even in a big class she tried to make sure everybody was following (even though some students fell behind badly). Their is a lot of HW involved but it basically is your study for exams. Regardless of what class she is worth trying.
Professor Stepp is one of the best professors at UT. She genuinely cares for each and every one of her students. She explains things thoroughly and makes sure you understand before moving on. She gives lots of things away for attending class (so go!) and her videos teach you step-by-step processes for learning. Overall wonderful teacher and class
very nice and class doable. be careful though, it's easy to get a B tough to get an A
I hate math and find it very difficult. This class was ALOT of work but she gives you every opportunity possible to do well. She is the most caring professor I have had at UT. I would take her again in a heart beat and recommend her to everyone. She creates videos, learning modules etc to make you do well. TAKE HER
Great professor, structures the class so its actually hard to get a bad grade. Lots of online Quest homework makes for good practice, no need to go to class, all tests are exactly like quest.
Great Teacher
She is amongst the best professors I have ever had. Incredibly helpful, she takes you along the journey without stealing it. Ideas were crystal clear, she makes sure that you know them.
Great professor! Gives about two homework assignments each week which do not take too long to compete. Tests are fairly simple if you do your homework and make sure to go to OH's if you don't understand a problem. Tests are very similar to homework problems. She is super nice and tries to keep her students engaged.
Stepp is a very kind and caring prof, she is very genuine and wants us to succeed. The only downside is UT's Quest system, but as a professor, she is great. 2 homeworks a week(ish), 3 exams, and final.
Stepp is caring and kind, but I didn't learn anything from her. She doesn't teach the material well, and I can imagine that if you didn't take calculus before, her course will be difficult. Her exams are ok.. they are on Quest, so if you do a lot of review problems the exams aren't too bad.
I feel like the class was haphazardly set up and our TA was nonexistent. The lectures were sometimes helpful but oftentimes not and we were often left to our own devices to figure things out. Quest is annoying at first but then you learn how to use it. Her grading was fair 20% for three tests and 1 final worth 25%. The final could replace your low
absolutely loved her lectures, you do have to put in work outside of class to make a good grade, but even in a virtual format, she makes things easy to understand. She made the lectures easy to get through and always does her best to make sure we're getting the concepts. She makes a somewhat difficult course easy.
I took Calculus in high school and pretty much knew everything already, so it was great that attendance wasnt mandatory. I just did the homework and exams through quest and was able to exempt the final. Never went to the lectures.
Professor Stepp is so sweet. She is genuinely a nice person. Her lectures were always fun to listen to (although I found myself skipping a few). I felt her class was relatively fun if you do the work, or already have a basic understanding of calculus. She had homework through quest, but that was also easy and helpful for tests.
I took Calc in highschool and stepp was better. The class is really easy to follow pace wise. If you dont get topics there are a lot of chances to improve your skills. Tests are clear and fair.
Lots of homework, but it's all pretty easy. Dr. Stepp is a really great person, but she is clearly checked out of teaching at UT. She literally lives in NYC and is a professor at NYU, and this class clearly isn't a priority of hers. She is pretty much unreachable outside of class. Grade is 60% tests, 25% final, 15% homework. Basically Calc AB.
If you haven't taken intense math classes in high school or are well versed in math, you will not do well in this class. Stepp moves quickly and does not teach what is on the homework. Her tests are multiple choice, which is extremely difficult in a calculus class compared to free response. Be warned, this class is very difficult.
All online because she teaches in-person at NYU. She is probably the most engaging online prof I have and will ever have. Loved her! You have two homeworks a week and graded by 2-3 tests + final. The only reason I didn't do as well was truly on me for not paying attention or putting math on the backburner. If you pay attention, u will be fine.
I definitely think Stepp is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Even on zoom she was engaging and SO FUNNY. She makes sure to break down concepts. Her exam could be tricky but at the end she adjusted the grading scale and bumped up a ton of people because SHE CARES. 1-2 Quest Homeworks a week, 2 midterms, and a final. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
This class is difficult for people who weren't really exposed to intense calculus in high school. She teaches like everyone already knows the material and moves very fast. Especially since this class is online, I would not recommend.
Online class but in person tests. Her lectures are nothing like the homework and the homework is nothing like the exam. Beware.
She is a good professor but do not take this class unless you are 100% confident in calc from previous experience. Specific content in lectures, homework, and exams all differ a bit so I often went into exams not knowing what to really expect. She does provide worksheets to practice and makes an effort to answer everyone's questions in lecture.
The lectures are different from the homework, the homework different from the tests, and the tests different from the lectures. Either extremely basic questions on the homework or questions you never talked about before and have no idea where to start. Beware if never taken calculus before. Material taught like a review instead of brand new.
I think Professor Stepp is a good person, but her lectures do not help prepare you for exams at all. Only take this class if you have taken and are confident in calculus already, as the material is taught as if students already know calculus, and lectures are generally kind of all over the place.
It was challenging because it was asynchronous. TA discussions were super helpful! Dr. Stepp seems like such a fun person and I would love to have her in person. She takes feedback into consideration. Because of the online aspect, it's more difficult to grasp concepts, so definitely have some kind of calculus background before taking. Great person.
Prof. Stepp would've been so much more enjoyable if this class wasn't asynchronous. If you haven't taken AP Calc AB or BC in high school, this class is really tough as the topics are taught very quickly. The grading criteria are just the hw and then the exam average which could really kill your grade. If you can skip 408C, then skip it.
Dr. Stepp is amazing! I didn't take calculus in high school but still get an A. She explained the materials clearly and easily to understand, and also gave us a lot of practice to prepare for the exam (extra practice and not graded, totally up to you do it or not). I got 74 on the first exam, but things will get better if you put in enough effort.
Professor Stepp seems like a kind person, but she is not a good calculus professor in the slightest. I have never received an A-, but I ended barely passing the class. The tests were nothing like the homework, which the TA had quite a difficult time explaining. Test averages were as follows: 64, 70, 66. Don't expect a curve or help, it isn't coming
If you haven't taken calc in high school, this class will be difficult because it is online. However, Dr. Stepp is very passionate and tries to connect with the students. Make sure to do the practice problems and homeworks to understand the material. Sometimes test questions are pulled from lectures. Multiple choice questions are similar to quest.
She replaces your lowest midterm with your final if she thinks it'll help. No curves. Teaches this more in a review-style than as completely new material. If you don't have a strong foundation, this will be a hard class. You need to know your trig; goes further than just sin/cos/tan and this course assumes mastery of arccos/csc/sec^2 stuff.
Lectures were average but easily understandable. Curves heavily for exams and gives tons of extra credit. First exam was OK but weedout. Second exam was extremely difficult, but curved nearly 20pts. Final was easy (all simple MC - no hyperbolic fns) and had 10pts of extra credit. Notesheet for 1st 2 exams. HW was easy but long. Lowest exam dropped.
I took calc in high school so that definitely helped me do well in the class, but I'd only recommend that people take this class online if they're very motivated. Lectures aren't required and they're recorded, so it's easy to fall behind. To do well, I'd recommend watching lectures and studying quest (both cover questions similar to the exams).
Dr. Stepp teaches remotely over Zoom, but she still makes a connection to the students and brings an energy to class that keeps you engaged. The class moves pretty quickly, but there is a ton of practice available. The tests are pretty short though, so if you don't know the material, your grade will reflect it.
While the class is virtual and attendance was optional, she does a great job at explaining the content of the course. She's very caring when it comes to her students. Homework is done weekly through Quest and while there are some odd difficulty jumps in the questions in homework, the TA's are helpful during office hours and discussions.
I absolutely loved her and truly enjoyed her lectures, HOWEVER she does not always elaborate on things properly. If this is your first time taking calculus then I would advise you to look for another professor. Though she graded fairly your grade was solely reliant on tests and homework. Her lectures were great but they just weren't suited for me.
This course was online and attendance at lectures/discussion was not mandatory. Lectures were recorded and TAs were super helpful. The only downside to this course is that the grade only consists of tests (3+final) and Quest homework (2ish a week). Not much curving on exams but Prof. Stepp offers lots of practice problems, reviews, & sample exams.
Professor Steps is great at explaining Calculus concepts. The weekly homework is discussed during the discussion sections. The tests are out of the homework and the test review worksheets which she posts. The only reason I got a B+ and not an A is because I did not do the test review worksheets.
Took the class online and did have to put a lot of effort into it. Stepp does a really good job of explaining concepts and solidifying what you need to know. Tests are difficult, but its Calc 2, so thats expected. There are a lot of ways to prepare for them (practice tests, review hw). Stepp was very helpful as a teacher though.
I've had Professor Stepp twice now... She's awesome! I love her lectures because she is so entertaining. She really cares about her students and is very open to feedback about the courses she teaches. Highly recommend her to anyone! I took her geometry course, and while it was her first time teaching it (I think), she did a great job!
Professor Stepp was an amazing professor and I could only wish that she was an in-person course. The homeworks were hard, but once you figure out the homeworks then the exams were very easy. The exams were nothing compared to the homeworks. Very caring and funny professor. Highly recommend.
Stepp has a great attitude, super sweet, friendly and passionate. Following the online format was a struggle. Forced groups and break out rooms. Also there is very advanced math involved. Much harder than I expected for a entry level course. The text book is also super weird. If you are bad at math, I would not recommend take this course.
If you are looking for a math class that involves actual math, then this is not the class. However, since I needed the credit, I took it and I do not regret it. She was very nice and understanding. She puts you in new groups every project (she does not assign exams) and it is easy if you do the work. Homework is easy depending on the chapter.
Dr. Stepp is an amazing lecturer! However the class is SO fast. If you don't have calc experience, you will be fine if you pay attention/study enough. There's easy participation points and harder quest HWs, but if you review each/do practice problems, you will be in great shape for the exams. 3 exams, all very straightforward and have extra credit.
To be honest, I stopped listening to lectures less than halfway through the semester. From when I was paying attention Stepp was cool and funny at times, concepts weren't too hard. I taught myself the concepts on the days I didn't pay attention, easy for sure. She does do group projects so get ready to collab. Not a bad class but nothing amazing.
Prof. Stepp definitely cares about all her students! Although I took the course online, she's very accessible out of class. Her lectures were easy enough to understand. She assigns a lot of weekly hw, but it's definitely worth doing to help understand the concepts and do well on the tests, around the same difficulty. I would definitely recommend!
I absolutely adore professor Stepp! She's hilarious and extremely kind, and her lectures are very understandable. Her lectures are easily understandable even though the class is online. The homework can be pretty difficult, but it's great practice for the tests, especially since the tests are much easier than the homework.
Professor Stepp is clearly passionate about teaching math and wants each student to succeed in her class. The classwork is fairly constant with a couple of assignments every week but it is fairly manageable. Although the weekly homework is hard, the course work overprepares you for the much easier exams.
Professor Stepp was my favorite professor this semester! She cares so much about her student's success and overall happiness in the course. I felt like she was so easy to talk to and connect with. She is also funny which helps during lectures that can be quite boring because of content. Do be warned though, this class is NOT a cake walk, study!
Stepp was hilarious and she definitely made calculus fun at times. You'd definitely need prior calculus experience for this class, especially with how fast she moves and the class being online. Offered silly extra credits for each test and throughout the semester. Quest HWs are hard, but it's good prep for the tests which are mainly Quest.
She's very kind and you can tell she cares about her students. I rated this class a 2 on difficulty because I already took calc in high school, but she's still a great professor in general. She also gave us extra credit for ALL our tests (including final) just for wearing a specific shirt. Recitations were also great for extra practice.
Dr. Stepp was an amazing professor. She really cares about her students and there is always an opportunity for 5 extra points on every test for wearing a specific shirt, a hat, etc. This was an online class and her lectures did not have mandatory attendance but the recitation sessions twice a week were taken for a great. Would 100% take again.
LOTS OF HW: pre-lecture assignments, quest homework, and recitation worksheets. Answers and explanation for recitation ws are given during its time slot so make sure to show up. Tests are worth a lot but are very doable if you have done the hw and paid attention in lecture. Prof is very engaging but she does teach pretty fast.
Stepp is a nice person however she cannot teach. She seems all over the place and after years of teaching she seems to still be winging it. If you don't have a strong calculus background already, don't take the class, the classes reenforces calculus materiel, it doesn't teach it.
Great professor, unfortunately calc 2 is just a very hard subject to learn. She's very accessible if you need her and you can tell she really wants you to succeed. I took the web based class so it was easy to ignore lectures and fall behind but if you keep up with your work you'll be fine.
I would 100% recommend her she is very funny and caring, but be warned this is an online class so if you don't do well in online classes I would recommend you to take an in-person class instead. The reason why I failed this class was 100% on myself and not on the professor. You will be fine on the exams as long as you do well on the homework.
Amazing professor. Tests are taken straight from the homework problems except for maybe one or two per test. She is always there to answer questions and help her students. She gives out 5 free points per test for wearing something silly to the exam. The TA's are not great at all but Dr. Stepp is amazing. Recommend!
Dr. Stepp is amazing! This class is a lot of work and can be difficult, but it's very doable. The exams are very similar to the homework, so make sure to do them. Her midterms are in person, with 11 questions, but she only counts it out of 10, and you can get 5 points extra credit for wearing something specific.
if you have to take M408L, take professor stepp. she's a great teacher, and makes her lectures interesting. she's super nice and, despite calc 2 being notoriously hard, made it much easier for me to understand with her teaching methods. she actually goes into detail when it comes to answering questions, and explains every step thoroughly.
Dr. Stepp is a great instructor. Her lectures were very clear and concise. She teaches math in a very non-pedantic way, focusing mainly on understanding, instead of formalism. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a M408D professor.
If you've taken AP Calculus BC before, you'll be fine in Dr. Stepp's M 408D class; if not, it will not be easy. She teaches very quickly, almost as if she assumes everyone has already taken Calc BC before, and there is a crazy amount of HW between weekly Quest homeworks, pre-lecture learning modules, and weekly worksheets. Nice prof; hard class.
Prof. Stepp posted all notes online which made it easy to go back and review for exams. In addition to that, the exams are all Quest questions, which made them relatively easy. However, there was a weekly worksheet(TA's went over them during recitation) on top of homework assignments. Go to recitation and do homework and you should get an A.
Stepp is a nice professors who can make the class enjoyable in a way. She assigns community points where you have to submit photos doing a certain activity, and during exams she provides extra credit if you wear something she specifically asks for. Her exams are manageable, especially for someone like me who doesn't attend lectures.
Dr. Stepp wants every student to succeed. She offers extra credit on every exam, simply by showing up. Her exam policy is forgiving; allowing students to drop a midterm, or let their final exam grade be their entire exam grade. This class can be extremely hard if you get behind. The skills learned in this class will be used daily for STEM majors.
She seemed like a great helpful teacher, but I do not recommend taking an online class first semester of your college experience. So much will be going on and with her on zoom it was so hard to pay attention. Her homeworks are doable and she graded them on completion. Just PAY ATTENTION and you will get a good grade.
Professor Stepp was amazing! I took her for both M408C/M408D. Exams are ~ 70% of your grade but there is extra credit. Just beware, the online format isn't for everybody, there is quite a bit of homework (Quest Learning Modules & Homeworks and Gradescope Worksheets), and she may not be the best option if you've never taken calculus in high school.
If you've taken Calc 1, you'll be fine in her class—she teaches like a TA and assumes you already know the material, so no step-by-step explanations(very fast, even in new things). Even the learning modules feel like review, and I often feel like I'm missing something. You'll need to self-study and prep in advance, or you'll fall behind.
Great professor, makes the class easy
Professor Stepp has amazing lectures and she even has a Zoom set up before every class starts for those who might need it for whatever reasons. The notes themselves are amazing. When it comes to what the grade is broken into, the tests do play a more significant part in the course, but if you do all the learning modules and hw, you should do fine.
Professor Stepp was very nice, friendly, and really approachable. Exams are worth a lot, but they're pretty similar to the homework questions. The assignment load is just Quest homework and a learning module before each lecture. I wouldn't take her again because I found her teaching style a little too complicated for me, but she's great overall.
Professor Stepp is a really really good teacher and if you put the time to get to know her and engage in class, you'll definitely end with a 95+. Also make sure to do the learning modules, as those help a lot when topics get confusing. Great class, and I highly recommend for anyone taking M408D. ** The course can go a lot faster than others though
WHAT A PROFESSOR! I cannot stress how simple and relaxing she made this class. Most notes were posted online + zoom and so I barely attended any discussion sessions and self-studied then. There are no quizzes and attendance is not mandatory either. Literally 3/4 of the exam and midterms are the Quest homework, so make sure you go through that!!
It was a very easy class if you had taken AP Calc BC in high school, as the first two exams covered material from that course. Prof. was good, but sometimes taught fast. The exams were simple and straightforward; they took questions straight from the homework.
