Pretty easy class if you go to lecture and look at the paintings. She's an annoying lecturer because she says ummmmmmm 43854378998734 times during lecture. All in all not too bad. But beware that all art history majors have to take this class and they're hardcore. If you're taking for double GenEd know you're up against them for A's.
BEST TEACHER EVER. 3 tests, 3rd is final , not cumulative, so easy, helpful, one paper that takes 1 hour at most. easiest A from freshman year.
We were walking back to our dorm and then Jill the TA almost mowed us down with her car. I really like Strummy though. I thought she was the Fly 92 15,000 fugitive, but she wasn't. Her tests are really easy. She says ummmm a lot. One day the projector wasn't working and a scary ogre-like lady came to fix it.
This teacher is really nice! The class is EXTREMELY BORING if your not interested in art history! Trying to stay awake in class was difficult! She is kind of oblivious when it comes to taking tests. Everyone is talking during the tests! Overall, she is very nice, helpful, and easy. Just go to class, take good notes, and study and you will get an A!
really nice lady. pretty easy class. 3 tests, 1 paper. not cumulative. watch out for the final though a bit harder than the other tests. overall definitely worth it. covers 2 gen-eds
Strummy is the best. Notice I gave her a hot pepper.
nice lady, easy class, somewhat hard to stay awake but the tests are pretty easy, just take notes. Also, she is pretty oblivious when it comes to talking during tests. Theres only one paper thats short and simple. She is very understanding and a nice lady. This class also counts for 2 gen eds. I would recommend it to anyone!
Take this class, very easy but you must be willing to stay awake.
Strum is a pretty good professor. Her tests are fair, and her lectures are interesting. She does take attendance, even in lecture centers. If you take this class, you MUST do the assigned reading.
srtum is the best. she gives great lectures, now attendance not mandatory :) and the information is good.. although she does basic overviews and doesnt give too much background information on artworks which i wish she would. study for the tests and use flash cards and you will be fine. book is a perfect resource for those.
Great Teacher. Three tests and one easy essay. Attendence isnt required but if you go to class and takes notes on the review sheet she hands out you'll do really well.
I would take another class with her again. Interesting lectures, sometimes boring. Tests are really easy and she always has extra credit on it. Just make sure you study.
Lectures are sometimes boring, but beneficial if you go. Tests are very easy if you study. I reccomend this class!
This class is boring but it's an easy class and Professor Strum is very nice. Exams are pretty easy if you pay attention and spend some time studying. You write one paper for the entire semester based on viewing a work of art related to the time period. If you hand in the paper early you'll get extra credit but she's picky while grading the paper.
She is the best! Her tests are really easy as long as you study and put effort. Her tests only take 10minutes to do anyways. Some of the paintings she shows us are boring and awful, but others are pretty cool haha. Deff take this class for an easy A if you need a arts/europe gen ed.
Loved her! Tests are easy as long as you go to class or look through the book and study the art pieces beforehand. I actually looked forward to going to class, I found it interesting and relaxing. If you need an Art or Europe GE, def. take this one.
She is just the nicest woman. I never purchased the textbook because I was told she verbalizes everything on the exam and that is true. Go to class, take notes, put a little bit of study time in (not too much necessary) and you'll do fine. If I wasn't only taking her class to fill a gen ed I would definitely take another with her.
Niceest lady ever. As long as you go to class and take some notes and study for about an hour you're guaranteed an A. If I didn't take this class for a Gen Ed I would def want to take her again. Highly recommend taking her class!!
easy class. attendence isnt mandatory, and lectures can be very boring. review sessions before the test are very helpful, especially if you miss a few classes. easy final paper. as long as you study the pieces, it's an easy A. if you don't study, good luck.
Awesome teacher! Very passionate and knowledgeable. She is so nice. Easy class if you pay attention in lecture. Def recommend anyone to take this course. I wish more professors had her passion for teaching!
The class is interesting and the professor is a sweetheart! She clearly loves what she's teaching and has fun doing it, always willing to help. Slideshow class that comes with a review sheet. Three tests, including the non comprehensive final. A short paper. Text only needed to look at images. Take this class, and AARH 171!
If you don't care about art, don't take this class! Take an easier class. There are too many artists to remember, and she spends time talking about her own experiences than teaching. She gives no adequate review sheets, the questions on the exam are all irrelevant. You will fail. Take an easier class instead. Her class is buns.
This class was painfully boring. I really didn't enjoy sitting it for 55mins every MWF, but for a double gen ed it was worth it. Paper is alright. Hand it in early & you'll get extra credit. The exams can be kinda iffy, only because its hard to study for Art His.But go to the review sessions and it'll make it easier. Overall take the class. Got an A
The best professor I've had so far. Her tests are extremely straightforward as long as you study what's on the review sheet she gives out. Only assignment other than tests is a 3-5 page paper. She's so sweet and very helpful. I would really recommend taking her class, even if you don't need the Ged-Ed credit, it broadened my horizons a lot.
very nice, test are pretty easy as long as you study what she tells you on the review sheet. paper is pretty easy you and you get extra credit for your overall grade
You may think that Art History is boring, but Prof. Strum made it sort of interesting. You can tell she knows a lot about this subject and is very passionate about it. Overall class is easy, test are very straight-forward. May be hard for people who have a hard time memorizing. There is extra credit if you hand in a 3-5 pg paper early.
The class was pretty easy she gave extra credit on the exams and extra credit if you handed in the paper early. If you just studied what was on the study guide you'd do pretty well. I thought going to class was helpful. Sometimes class was really boring but I enjoyed it some days.
Absolutely recommend her and her class. Even with no interest in art or art history, the class was simple to follow. I went to most of the classes because reading the textbook was NOT an option. I wouldn't even buy the book.
This is my 2nd class with Strum and I'm still pretty much in love with her. Her lectures are interesting with plenty of information about the artwork, the movement, and the artist. Apparently she only teaches modern art every 3 years so if you get a chance to take it with her DO IT!
First things first, DON'T WASTE MONEY ON THE TEXTBOOK, kind of useless. As long as you take notes from her powerpoint and then google the pictures, you should do fine on her exams. She also gives extra points if you hand your paper early. Overall easy class, and Professor Strum is really nice as well. Easy Art GenEd!
If you don't pay attention to the lectures, you won't do very well. Book is useful. She's INCREDIBLY, INCREDIBLY monotone and boring. I found her class difficult simply because she didn't stimulate my interest. I love art history but I had to motivate myself to attend class. She's well educated and adorable, though.
Attendance isn't mandatory but if you go to class, take decent notes. Very nice & approachable lady. Three exams, including non-cumulative final, that are easy if you rely on notes. Textbook is a waste unless you choose not to go to class. One term paper as well and gives extra credit if you hand it in early. I recommend her to fulfill gen-eds.
Class can be an easy A, you dont need to attend class she gives a study guide, memorize painting names and artists names you can do this on your own and receive a good grade. A 4page paper at the end of the semester easy, gives you 3 extra points towards final average if you hand it in early-take advantage of it. Sweet lady and is understanding
This class is so easy. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, you dont use it. Four tests, not cumulative. Study guides for each are given out. All you need to memorize is the art work, artists, what its made from and sometimes date. So easy. One paper. Attendance not required. Loved her, shes great
nicest women. took the class as a gen ed, never went to class just used the textbook to study for the tests and she gives you a study guide with everything on it. If you hand in the paper early you get 3 points towards your grade. Easy A.
I have always done very well in history and art classes. I attended her classes and took very good notes yet still had difficulty on tests. Her tests are reasonable and she is very nice lady. In order to get an A you need to take a lot of time to study for the exam because she has a lot of different possible paintings.
Amazing professor. Loved her class. Make index cards with painting on one side and info from the study guide/notes on the other--will ace tests.
I didnt want to take the class at first, but it turned out to be the best class I took that semester. It was so easy. Theres no quizzes, and only three very easy tests, and one paper due late in the semester. Shes such a sweet lady. Definitely taking another class with her in the future.
Very easy class. Use the texbook to study, you will have no problem on the test. Prof. Strum can be a bit hard to listen to for a long period of time, however she is very nice and helpful.
Take as detailed of notes as possible. If you don't go to class it is a lot of work to make up on your own. I studied for 6 hours for the final and there were parts still difficult. May not be the most interesting class but make sure you never miss a class. Prof. Strum is the nicest person ever, just content can be boring.
I had a slight interest in art history when choosing this class to fulfill my art gen Ed. Terrible mistake. This class, and professor Strum are both horrendously boring. The lectures all consist of boring PowerPoint slides and her talking in monotone about a vase for 80 min. Worst class I've taken in my college career. Avoid it.
Very enthusiastic of art history, sometimes would go on tangents about other artists but always would wrap it up in a way that pertained to the subject at hand.
I loved her. Extremely easy-going and teaches with a sort of cheerful enthusiasm that makes you appreciate the class. One short paper and tests are not bad as long as you study.
Great teacher. Sometimes I admire her lectures could be boring but this class is easy. Just memorize key points from each slide and the definitions and you'll get an A. Randomly gives attendance but she tells you if she will within the first few mins so you could leave. You can get an A without the textbook. Very approachable and nice.
Professor Strum was the sweetest lady you will ever meet! Please take this class and you will not only fall in love with her, but Netflix, music, and Facebook at the same time. Class was not very interesting BUT the course at times were cool. If you take notes on your laptop, don't plan on paying much attention. 3 exams, 1 paper. 25%/ea Easy review
She is such a sweet woman and very approachable! You do not need the textbook, takes attendance once in a while, lectures are a little boring, but if you study the artists, terms and key points of each slide, you will get an A. Extra credit on each test and paper. Final not cumulative. Three tests and paper each worth 25% of grade.
4 hard multiple choice tests.
To get a good grade in her class read her study guide. Show up in class d take notes. Study the artwork and know the style. She make the class interesting and she very helpful. I loved her class.
This class counts for 2 gen eds and professor Strum is the best. I recommend taking notes in Powerpoint during lectures so you don't have to make more study guides for the tests. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! The TA Alexis is extremely helpful. Multiple choice tests are a breeze if you go to class and the review. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. GOOGLE PICS!
Without a doubt the nicest professor here. The grading is just 3 tests and paper, all 25% each. Extra credit if you hand paper in at earlier deadline. Takes attendance sporadically. Review sessions greatly help. Review sheets on Blackboard help too. Covers 2 geneds, worth taking.
Study the test guides with the paintings you have to know and you'll do fine in the class.
She is awesome! Def take this class for the international perspectives/art gen ed. 3 tests, 1 research paper on a painting of your choice. Gives study guide. Offers extra credit. Great review sessions before tests. Attendance taken randomly, but you MUST go to class and take notes if you want an A on the tests. Take this class you won't regret it!
Great teacher, does her best to make material interesting. 1 paper 4 tests. A lot of material but easy if you look over it the night before.
She is very straight forward. 3 tests and 1 (4-5 page paper, also submit early for 3 points on final grade), Each assignment 25% each. Not necessary to buy textbook, just show up and take good notes. The attendance sheet was passed around 5 times in the semester. If miss class then can go to the same course at different time. FANTASTIC PROFESSOR !
Professor Strum is extremely helpful. This was a very boring class to me and I thought I might fail, so I went to talk to her during her office hour, she gave me another form of the final exam and graded my paper early. I ended up passing the class. If you want to take AARH 170, do not buy the text book, you can just google.
This course is terrible and professor Strum just makes it worse. She seems nice but her teaching style is so awful. There's no creativity in her lecture. She literally just drones on and goes slide to slide for an 1 and 30 mins straight. Also attendance counts, she'll pick random days to check. Class is an easy A, if you can actually pay attention
Worst class ever. I think I'm gonna start bringing a tape recorder to her lectures and play the tape to help me fall asleep at night. Literally the most boring lectures ever, good luck paying attention. She makes the class the slightest bit interesting. Highly recommend finding a teacher with at least a little bit more creativity in her lectures.
The lectures are kinda dry and boring for the most part. You can look over the material for the test the night before and still do okay. This class counts as two GEN ED credits. If you don't pay attention in class it can be hard to do well. Very nice professor and willing to help if you go to office hours.
So boring and gives the worst lectures. Tests are extremely hard even if you take notes. Try finding another gen ed for art if you don't want a single class to bomb your whole semester
No this class is not the most riveting class you will ever take. It is an art history course they are usually dry people. However I think Professor Strum is really nice and tries to give you just what is needed and not get too boring. All you have to pay attention to is painting names, artists, a few dates, and time period styles really easy A!
lectures are mad boring. if youre gonna take the class i recommend putting all the paintings in a powerpoint presentation and studying them that way. i dont recommend taking this class if you have trouble paying attention
This class could be an easy A depending on how you tackle it. Lectures are BORING but attending class could help on exams. Takes random attendance and assigns one paper throughout the semester. Provides study guides way before the tests. The best way to study for the tests is to make a powerpoint with all the paintings and GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS
The lectures are very boring and hard to pay attention. There are three tests and one paper. She will help you but, you have to work and study. Put all the paintings in a power point and study from that.
This professor is bad and shows no empathy for her students. Many students are failing her tests but she just smiles but doesn't go out of her way to help any hard working students. She teaches a level 1 class that is harder than any 300 level class I have ever taken.
literally had to drop this class i'm so disappointed I just regret that I didn't take powerpoint pictures she gives 3 exams and 1 paper don't take this class if you struggle to pay attention.
If you don't show up, trust me you will have no idea what is going on in this class
The class is basically all notes from the lecture. She gives you a study guide for the upcoming exam and reviews everything on the study guide in class through lecture. The lectures are somewhat boring and the study guide is somewhat extensive given what is actually on the test. She grades participation though questions on a website called Tophat.
I literally never paid attention in her class. I went to ALL 3 review sessions for each test. The first exam I got a 100, the second one I got a 92. The essay wasn't bad, and participation is easy points. All you do is memorize the artworks, that's it. The questions she asks on the exams aren't even tricky either.
I dont why everyone does love her. I personally didnt show up for most of the class and got above a 90 on both my tests. All you have to do is go to the review session the day before and they give you literally every answer on the test. There's 3 tests 75% a paper 15% (if u hand in early u get 3 points on your final grade) and tophat10%
Strum is a great person. I took this class as a Gen Ed and I wouldn't say that it is an easy A. The best way to study for her tests is putting the artworks in powerpoint or study guide along with the information about them. The tests can be a bit tricky so studying is really important. She holds review sessions for the tests that are so helpful!
Extremely boring , speaks in the monotone . Hard to pay attention to such heavy lectures about ancient art when the professor just stands behind the computer screen and speaks into a mic . You must memorize almost everything and its very verbatim . Does not give any homework so exams are basically your grade & professor is barely available outside
Lectures are extremely boring but if you study at home for exams you can pass the class . Taking notes is extremely important and if you miss class you will not pass .
As a chemistry major I thought I would struggle taking this class because it is not something I am interested in. This teacher has made it easy. Tests are not hard and you can get extra credit through bonus questions on the test and by handing the one paper assignment in early.
you can tell that this professor absolutely loves what she does, but the tests are absolutely impossible to get good grades on. I took this class to fulfill my art credit but to me it just ended up being an extremely difficult and almost impossible history course. don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A
Dont buy the textbook!! Easy class if you actually pay attention. She takes random attendance. If you dont pay attention because of how boring it gets, just go to the review sessions and youll learn everything in 1hr and will be ready for the test.
Every grade counts. YOU MUST turn the paper in and score well on the exams in order to pass. Do not skip class because there are daily questions for participation points .
Strum is such a sweet and fantastic professor. It's very lecture heavy content, so take notes every single lecture and study. You can't just sit in class and do well on the tests. There's a lot of memorization needed. She makes it easier by giving out thorough study guides.
Strum Is an amazing woman with a wonderful heart. She is also a fantastic professor who gives you more than enough information to do well in the class and will help you if you need it. Definetly take notes and pay attention during the lecture and you'll do well. If you're considering taking a course with her as the teacher I highly recommend it.
I took this class freshman year without choice. She made me fall in love with art history and now I am majoring in art history. Lectures can be boring sometimes but just take notes on whatever is on the study sheet & you'll pass. Has many extra credit opportunities as she wants you to get the best possible grade. GO TO REVIEW AND YOU'LL PASS!!!
Professor Strum is one of those professors that go off on a tangent for an hour and twenty minutes and call it a lecture. You're graded on only six assignments for the entire course. Mess up one or two and you'll struggle. Freshmen, please take another Gen Ed course.
Strum likes to go off on a tangent and then call the class over. Her assignments aren't extremely difficult, but she is of no help. This is one of those classes where the student really teaches themselves and the professor is there to take attendance. I made the mistake of taking this as a gen ed freshman year as recommended by my advisor.
DO NOT TAKE AARH110!!! Literally the most boring class I have ever sat through. There are 3 tests, 2 homework assignments, and a research paper. The tests are ridiculously hard and if you don't ace them you'll get a bad grade. She offers 3 points if you hand the paper in a month early, but that's all the extra credit you'll get.
Recorded lectures have all the info you need for exams, so if you watch those, you're all set. The hardest assignment was a research essay, but she is willing to look at rough drafts before the due date and provide extra credit for submitting the paper early. If you need an art Gen Ed, I highly recommend Strum!
The class honestly wasn't bad, I wasn't interested in the slightest and the lectures were long and boring but you do need to watch them for the test. Honestly don't buy the textbook because I didn't use it once, she just repeats the textbook info into her lectures. I had 3 tests, a final, a research paper and 2 homework assignments.
She is a nice lady, but if you arent interested in art history in general I would not take this class. It is boring but as long as you make powerpoints with the study guide provided you will be fine. You need to memorize a lot. She gives extra credit on tests to boost your grade. There is one 8page paper, it is long but not hard.
1 discussion post, Three tests, and one paper. Tests are memorizing artwork, the artist, and the history around the artwork. For the paper, you go to a museum and write a paper about a piece you saw. This is graded lightly. The exams have a lot of information packed into them though so if you don't have a good memory do not bother.
Professor Strum is very passionate about art. I enjoyed taking her class, but it isn't a class you can skip and still expect to get an A. There are opportunities for extra credit points at the end of each test. Your grade is composed of 3 tests, a discussion post, and a research paper.
Strum was a good professor, seemed to really be interested in us learning but understands that its usually taken as a gen-ed. Graded by 3 tests which can be difficult the first time around and one paper that requires you to go to a museum for credit but gives extra credit on both tests and paper if turned in early. Would recommend for art gen-ed.
Beth is an angel, but the class sucks. If you are signed up to take Survey of Art in the Western World absolutely do not do it. It will genuinely be the worst decision of your life and you will regret not dropping it. The class is so boring and the tests are so hard. I promise you do not want to take this class.
the class isn't bad, you only do poorly if you don't come to lectures and take notes her lecs are heavy. No textbook to refer back to, you sit and type what she says. Only one discussion, and 3 exams based on art, history, dates, and subject. and a research paper. Beth is nice, she is very understanding, attend her review sessions. not an easy A.
Professor Strum is clearly very passionate about Art and made the class as fun and interesting as she could. Grades depend on 3 exams, a paper and a discussion. Exams are pretty hard, but not impossible. Offers extra credit if you hand in your paper early. Just be sure to study and attend reviews!
This class is horrible. Absolutely do not take, professor is very passionate but with that I think she forgets this is a gen ed. TA of the class is rude, class is three tests, a discussion and a paper, only extra credit offered is if you hand in the paper early. Tests are so hard. She gives a study guide however adds random things onto to the test.
You will have 3 Exams for which you'll just have to learn the study guide by heart. 1 Discussion where you have to write a paper basically. And 1 Paper where you have to visit an Art Musuem and write about an artwork from there. No Homeworks. She doesn't take attendance every time.
Professor Strum was a good professor, she is very nice and is usually accessible outside of class for extra help. The course was graded only by 3 tests, a paper, and a discussion. The tests carry a lot of your grade so if you do bad on the tests you will probably do bad in the class. Attendance is taken randomly and there's no textbook.
I love Strum as a person but the class is horrible and I personally did not like the TA. If you're taking this for a gen ed, don't. You will regret it. Only extra credit offered is turning in your paper early and unless you love art history, this class is dull and boring. You cannot pay me to take this class again.
IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Great person but too much work. Professor expects you to remember too much for a 100 level class. The study guides are vague as well having you remember 20-30 are pieces each instead of 5 that would actually be on the test.
Strum is very sweet and patient however, if you do not go to class you won't do so well. Tests are weighted heavy (about 68% of your final average) and the course consists of 3 tests, a paper and an online discussion.
Professor Strum took this class way too seriously when its only a Gen Ed. Don't take this class unless you want to completely ruin your GPA, it is not worth it !!! Tests are purely memorization from what she presents on slides in class. She randomly takes attendance about 7 times a semester - give or take.
People say strum is not a good professor sometimes but I completely disagree. As long as you show up to all the lectures you will be just fine. Just listen and write down what she says and it will be easy to pass. She gives three exams, one discussion post and one paper. She only grades based off of these 5 assignments though.
You have to be really into art history to get a decent grade since this class is all memorization. If you are taking this simply for a gen ed & not because you're into the subject, I suggest you rethink that decision. 3 exams, a paper, and a discussion post makes up your grade. Only extra credit is handing in your paper early.
nice lady who cares about what she is teaching, relatively easy tests with a research paper to go with it. As long as you keep up and attend lectures, passing isn't difficult. Her TA is mad annoying though
Strum is passionate about Art History and truly loves what she teaches. The class only graded on 3 tests, a paper, and a discussion. The tests are all memorization from the lectures so you must study but there is a very helpful review session before each test. There are easier Art GenEd options but this class is easy if you put in the effort.
Run. Boring class, just 1.2 hours of professor going through artworks and students taking notes. We have to memorize like 30 artworks for each exam. We are only graded by one discussion, 3 tests, I think 3 or 4 exams, and 1 paper (3 extra credits if handed in 3 months early). Better off taking the 3 hour drawing classes.
Dr Strum is a very nice and caring person, and always helpful whenever you ask questions. 54% of your grade is based off tests which are just memorizing artworks, the other 46% is a paper, discussion, and online quizzes - nothing hard. Would recommend if you are into history because it is basically a history class, otherwise you may get bored.
Flexible and caring, I missed an online quiz one time and was under a lot of stress. Went up to her and asked for a make-up, she was happy to reopen it for me even after it was one week later. The lectures can be a little boring, the tests require memorizing artworks and such
Strum is a passionate professor, but the class is heavy on memorization. Attend lectures, study hard, and utilize resources like Unstuckstudy to manage the workload. With effort, the class is manageable.
Her lectures tended to be boring, but you kind of need to pay attention because you are only graded on three tests and 2 assignments. For tests, you must study; there are review sessions that are a great help but sometimes leave out things that are on the tests. She is helpful if you are having trouble; just communicate that to her.
Very understanding and helpful.
