She genuinely cares for her students and is more than willing to provide assistance when necessary. The class itself is somewhat difficult, but if you make sure to download the notes and review them the day before class you will be just fine.
She demands too much as if this is the only class you're taking. "Take home essay exam" sounds nice, except when it's supposed to be 8-10 pages long to be "thorough". That's like assigning another paper
Hard class/rude teacher. She teaches this class way too hard for an intro class. She also lectures and talks to her students like we are in the 5th grade. She always talks about wanting participation in discussion but is very biased and will sit there and argue with you. Do not take her!
Demands too much reading, wastes class time by watching movies. Exams are too easy but papers graded too harsh. She makes everything more complicated than need to be.
She is energetic and passionate about the material. She set the bar high, which made me want ot do better. I disagree with other comments on this site. Take her, she's great!
Informative class with a thorough passionate instructor, thanks Liz!
She is a very good teacher! Always so helpful to any questions I have. She was very easy to understand when teaching! I would recommend her, but if you are not willing to do your homework DON'T take her class! She gives you opportunities to bring your grades up though if your not good at test taking, ie. discussion boards, writing assignments.
Great professor! Easy to understand and very approachable.
It takes some time to get use to her. Friendly, a little crazy.
she's very sarcastic, makes you not want to participate. she's kinda harsh with word, and intimidating. the work is decent, with effort.
Great teacher, very passionate about sociology, very approachable! She expects a lot out of you but as long as you do the work you'll do fine.
Expects a lot from you, but is fair and if you do the work you'll do fine.
Liz is a GREAT teacher! She keeps your attention and is very fair about assignments and papers. If you try, you are sure to succeed. Just read what you are told and do your work...like a student should do!
Lectures are actually interesting but she grades discussion board assignmens harshly. Make sure to follow ALL instructions. Tests were easy enough I got a 190/200 on the FINAL so its very easy. Discussions were good and one video we watched was reallly intersting.
Liz is a great teacher. She really did not assign too much homework, just reading and discussion boards once a week. As long as you participate in class, she will really like you!
Amazing teacher! She is very passionate about what she does and it shows. She does expect a lot from you but as long as you put in the effort you'll do fine. I have taken her for SOC111 and SOC308 and I plan on taking her again in the fall.
Awesome instructor! If you did not like sociology before, you are bound to love it afte a class with her! Class attendance is not mandatory, but it helps. Take her if you get a chance, but be prepared to work!
I loved her. She is nice and hilarious. Encourages her students to participate but doesn't force it. She tells you exactly what is on test.
She is a very good teacher! She knows what she's talking about and encourages students to talk and think about the topics. Taking her class has changed my thinking about society. She gives you study guides for tests which I got 90% on every single one, final included. TAKE HER CLASS!
She has changed the way she does things and does not put the ppts on blackboard anymore. We had too much reading and 7 papers! We also had a cumulative final! It was our only test, but we had quizzes every Friday. Tons of work! The marriage and family class was not interesting to me at the terms we learned I had already learned.
I've had Stygar for two classes now and I highly recommend her! She is such a great teacher. Her lectures and assigned readings are very interesting. She is funny and keeps the students interested. It is more of a work load than typical but it allows you to really learn the material and get the most out of class. I highly recommend her! I'm
Very intimidating, makes participation mandatory. Gets mad at the class a lot when we have way to much of a work load. Grades papers very critically! Make sure you have all the criteria on the paper. Very helpful if you have questions.
Very good professor, will work with you if you have legitimate reasons for missing class or an assignment.
Liz is an awesome professor! I didn't skip class once and it was not because attendance is mandatory! She is very cheerfulenthusiastic. If you take notes, you will get an 'A'. Her online quizzes are from the notes and the final is the only test. It is apparent that she wants her students to learn. We had groups but no projects and it was a blast!
She loves what she does, which makes the material very clear and able to understand. BUT w doing projects you have to remember how into it she is and put forth ALL effort to point out all things you know in order to meet her expectations. Quizzes are very simple and usually go along with the material. Good course!
My class consisted of eight online quizzes, five writing assignments, and four experience essays (I was in the freshman seminar). As long as you do the assignments, this class is an easy A. The online quizzes are only 10 questions and you can use your notes. The only exam is the final which she gives you a study guide for. Super easy class!
Liz is a great professor, very personable & approachable: She is always available to answer questions & help both in class & outside of class. She is passionate about sociology & she loves class discussion. Your expectations are clear, which makes getting an A very achievable. I would definitely recommend taking her, I plan to in the future!
Liz was great! She didn't take attendance but I still was there every day. There was a lot of reading but none of it was difficult. She expects participation and will wait until someone answers. The only test was the final and we had a small quiz at the end of the week. The final was pretty easy and the questions were straight from the quizzes.
Liz is an amazing professor, she prefers to be called liz. I did not read the book not ONCE and i passed with a 95% in her class. Weekly 10 questions OPEN NOTE quizzes, and a multiple 2 page writing assignment. Class is an Easy A. Just come to class.
Dr. Stygar is a great professor and if you try, it isn't hard to get an A in the class. There are a lot of assignments, but it's a great way to help boost your grade. Her lectures are hilarious and she keeps the material interesting! I would definitely recommend her class to anyone taking SOCWMST.
She grades as if it's an English course, I wouldn't chose her as a professor again.
Liz can be very rude with her comments. Although she is a very good professor, and she expects a lot out of her students.
Liz is awesome! Very down to earth professor who likes having a classroom full of discussion. Her assignments are lengthy sometimes, but she gives you plenty of time to do them all. As long as you read and take notes you won't have a problem.
Liz is a great professor who really wants to get to know her students on a personal level. Overall the class was very easy and very fun. It is very easy to get an A in this class if you attend class (attendance is a good portion of your grade) and pay attention. Would definitely recommend Liz as a teacher and would definitely take her again.
Prof Stygar is very passionate about gender studies. Take this class serious as there is alot of reading & wants participation. Cares about students! Lectures are enjoyable & insightful. Doesn't provide slides, so take notes! Numerous essays, but can pick from opts. Stay on top of syllabus & you'll do fine. Online quizzes 1 cumulative final.
She. Is. Awesome. Definitely my favorite teacher. She hiliarious. And she cares. She adjusts well for students. And makes classes fun. I recommend 110%. Online quizzes every Friday. Notes taken every day. ( but like I said classes are fun ).
Liz was a really awesome teacher. If you put in the work, read, take notes, you will get a good grade. She's good about giving grades back quickly so you always know where you stand in the class. Online quizzes every week, 4 optional essays, 1 paper, and 1 cumulative final. She is good about giving students reminders so they don't miss due dates.
Class is not hard. Ms Stygar is passionate of subject, encourages discussion from class but does not like to be challenged or becomes defensive. Rants a lot. Tensions rise when someone speaks of opinion against hers. Dont call her Mrs, Maam or any other pronoun except Ms. Seems as she only wants you to agree with her. Its all from a feminist view
Liz is an amazing teacher. She cares about her students and understands our point of view. She lectures a couple days and then has group work one day a week. Quizzes online once a week, no tests, then the final exam. There are a couple short essays due throughout the semester. She's funny and very caring. Would definitely recommend her!
Liz is a great professor, no doubt, but if you have a full plate already, watch out. Her essays and papers are a lot of busy work and you HAVE to read if you want to pass. She gives excellent feedback, even on the quizzes. Attendance and participation is pretty much mandatory.
Liz is an awesome professor. She's really good at making sure everyone understands concepts and connections before moving on. There are online quizzes every Friday, but going to class and doing the reading is a guaranteed A. She also requires some short essays and a longer paper but again, reading & making connections is good enough for her.
Best professor at siue. She truly cares about the material and wants you to learn. Excellent teacher
I wish I could pick more than 3 tags because I love this professor. I took this class online, so I never thought she would have much of an impact on me - I was wrong. She cares about all students and wants them to do well. Her grading criteria is very clear, but you must earn your grade. Since it was online, I taught myself with the textbook.
Timed quizzes too short, grading seems to be based on her opinion, lots of busy work and papers
I took this class online over winter break, and Im so glad I did because she was an amazing professor! Expectations & assignments were clearly displayed in the syllabus, allowing you to work ahead days in advance. Had to read chapters for quizzes & participate in discussions, but it worked fluidly around holidays. Drops lowest grades! She cares!
Overall has the best interest for students. Its not hard to get an A if you actually try. I barely tried and got a B. Do the readings and youll pass any of her classes, Ive taken 4 by her. I barely did any of the readings and it still was easy. Be respectful to her and other students and shell respect you back.
As long as you read the material and follow the syllabus, this is an easy A. However, you HAVE to come to class, as attendance is a part of your grade, and her lecture notes arent online. amazing feedback on papers and essays you have to do. Only thing I didnt like about her is her inability to have criticism. Seems like its her way or no way.
She appears nice at first but then quickly becomes extremely rude, anytime she disagrees with you she gets defensive and rude. She made me cry twice this semester because she embarrassed me infront of the entire class because she simply disagreed with me. the quizzes are 10 questions and you only get 10 minutes so you better think fast.
Liz became one of my favorite professors at SIUE period. She is always there to give you feedback and loves to push students to continue learning in everyday. I would say though that you need to do the readings and come to class prepared. Get on her good side and stay their and she will be your biggest supporter.
She's a good professor and is knowledgeable on the subject of Sociology. However, She is extremely passionate on the subject and very opinionated. If you take her class do not disagree or even think of having your own opinion on a certain topic.
Stygar is one of, if not the, best professor I've ever had. She is passionate about sociology and truly wants to see her students growing in her class. She is great at timely communication and provides thorough, individualized feedback for each assignment. Stygar wants her students to succeed, but doesn't just give you the grade - you have to work!
Worst instructor I have ever had. Had no desire to offer extra help when I reached out at the beginning of the term when I was struggling-- she told me reread chapters. Be prepared to put forth all effort into her courses and receive no positive feedback in return.
When I took this professors class I initially enjoyed it. However, when I (a trans student) attempted to correct misinformation about terminology she was using she said she was a gender scholar and but her education above my lived experience and community connection. I stopped talking in class much after that and dreaded going.
Would not recommend. Expects work that she would do and doesn't take students work into consideration. Expects twice the work for this class which is an elective and doesn't offer many points. Grades too hard on assignments that are easy. No major take away from this class. Overall, wouldn't recommend unless you want to waste your time.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. Be ready to be disregarded and belittled if you have any opinion that is not the same as hers. She teaches opinions as facts, and you will have to agree with her in order to get an A. If this class is not required for your major, don't take it. If it is, find a different teacher.
Worst professor I have ever had. She is a stickler when it comes to grading and her classes are stressful for no reason. She could care less about someones lived experience and has a huge ego problem. She gets defensive when students disagree with her and she has no problem embarrassing you in front of the class. Take her at your own risk.
This entire class relies on reading. Quizzes are either 10 questions and have to be taken in 10 minutes, or 3 questions taken in 3 minutes, and thats a majority of grade. Discussion heavy, and Professor Stygar is ruthless with grading. She carries herself in a way that makes you feel like she expects you to already have mastered sociology.
Shes differently a teacher that you need to read your textbook. The discussions she sets a due date but expects you to participate 24 hrs before the due date. In these discussions you need to make sure to cite the video and textbook and make sure to use vocabulary words in your discussions to show your read the content. Harsh grader but helps
I LOVED professor Stygar! The material I learned in this course was very interesting and the way that she presented it was awesome. I would 100% take another one of her courses.
I think the worst part is the discussion boards. Her discussion boards have a page of rules and are impossible to get an A on as she will ALWAYS find something you did incorrectly. Her notes have little to no information and so you must know what random details to pick out of 20+ page chapters. She tries to make her class as stressful as possible.
Everyone on here sounds so dumb. Yall sound like 6th graders that just transferred to the college. I have learned so much from her and she makes me want to switch my major, please follow along with her notes and with her examples. Then you will pass. I just took her final and it was so easy. She is very organized and makes her classroom the same.
She refused to help me. Told me to refer to my syllabus multiple times even though in my emails I reached out with the sentence The syllabus isnt clear. Sad that a professor would do this to her students.
This teacher is horrible. It's not a tough class perse but she has the WORST attitude that I have ever seen. It's almost like she is mad that she is a teacher. If anything happens in your life that may inconvenience her be repaired for an explosion. She is also into public humiliation so be prepared. I would give her a 0 but that's not possible.
Liz treats everyone like an adult and gives great feedback.
Professor Styger was rude. Overall wouldn't ever take her class again. If your opinion didn't correspond to hers, it was incorrect. If she did she you talking the whole entire time during discussions, there goes points. Grades assignments like we were in an English class. Will tell you that your opinion is wrong if its not what she thinks or feels.
The written summaries are not difficult if you pay attention to the videos and/or readings, and the quizzes are all online (they are timed though so be prepared). Make sure to study for the final exam as well. Other than that, she is a fantastic professor, and I would highly recommend if you enjoy enthusiasm.
I loved her class. She is funny, caring, and not afraid to speak her mind. You do need to go to classes tho, attendance is everything. The Final was hard unless you study.
I loved taking Liz's class. She is a little passive aggressive when you first meet her but she means well. Overall easy class. The final was light work for me, she basically gives you all the answers.
Liz is an awesome educator. Attendance is important but the work is easy as long as you do it. Assignments are all available from the get go so working ahead is easy and possible. She can be unpleasant if students are disrespectful but that is just another reason to love her in my opinion. Her lectures are informative and entertaining, great class
Everything that is in her syllabus is what actually happens in class. If you like someone who is very well organized she is a great professor. However the only downside I had was how long her notes were, as well as how political her class got. So if you are interested in staying in that kind for environment then she is perfect for you!
she can be passive-aggressive but she means well. She is nice until she is not. She gives more work than my main classes because this class was a side class, but it's not bad. You have to do summaries and quizzes in the class but that's mainly it. She really likes participation in the class, which gives you points so you can't really be shy.
She was amazing in my sociology class! There are weekly summaries you have to do for Sociology 111 and group discussions but they were never insanely difficult. There's weekly readings, but I know several people didn't read and still managed to pass the class. The class was easy, and the professor was great. Make sure you take notes.
Liz truly cares about her students & the material that she teaches. She lays out the schedule for the class via email, blackboard, and the syllabus. No exams, weekly quizzes based off of the PP slides. She does expect everyone to read the books and come to class ready to discuss it, but its a 300 level course so that should be expected anyways
She is nice, but she gave so much work for one of my side classes. We had to write summaries over hour or two long documentaries, papers, etc. and it was a bit of work. If we didn't have summaries, there was a quiz you had to take. My friend took a different professor and it sounded a lot more fun, so I would take their class instead.
I enjoyed the material she taught, but she was strict on grading when it came to certain writing assignments, to the point where it was unnecessary.
Liz was a pretty decent professor, sometimes vaguely passive-aggressive, but mostly helpful and informative. Prepare for a LOT of papers, and if you're a quiet person, be prepared to talk, since she puts you in groups to discuss the assignments and then you talk about it as a class. Overall, a useful class and professor.
Thought it was women's history, actually Leftist 101! Be prepared to talk about every political, sexual, and mental controversy possible. Lots of papers required and she grades VERY strict. She is passive aggressive, picks favorites, and grades intense if she disagrees with you. She will call you out if she thinks you're wrong or doesn't agree.
I took several of Stgars classes during my time in undergrad. I am a trans student. She would often teach straight up misinformation about trans and intersex people. I tried to gently approach the topic of this misinformation with her and she opted to say that she was right because she is a "gender scholar" which is such a dismissal of lived exp
I enjoyed this class's content. All semester I received 10/10 on each summary, showing I know the material and she said she loved my effort. We had group discussions and she praised my group. My issue comes from the final paper, she told us not to stress about it but I received a 74/100 for a few mistakes, tanked my grade for what?
Her professional abilities are poor. She has a tendency to chastise students who don't understand gender politics. A friend of mine took women and gender with me and was berated in front of the class and to her peers (outside of the class in Liz's free time)for misunderstanding content on queer people when it's the whole reason she took the class.
If you want to feel bad about not pouring your heart and soul into a sociology class then do take this class.
She's rude, unfairly grades if she personally dislikes you, has in the past tried to deny people accommodations, and she's unaware of popular media despite being heavily focused on media critique for the class projects. She makes students uncomfortable, and prevented me from wanting to attend the course. I was singled out for talking “too much.”
