Great lab professor, real laid back about things. The quizzes aren't easy though, because there are only five questions. So if you miss one, you're already down to an 80.
MEAN!!
Very clear in her note and lectures. She won't give you anything in a quiz that was not discussed in class...she may just turn in around a bit. I found her very approachable, especially in her office. True, she expects a lot of work out of each student, but that is why e are in school
If I was rating her on just her in class personality she would do fine, but I went to her on the side to ask her for help, not once but twice, and each time she got an attitude with me. Physiology is a beast on its own I don't need the professor to be one.
Hope your hands are ready to write, long notes, you try to keep up and wont catch things she says. She is fast, she knows the material and is sorta nice but she thinks you should no every little detail in the book. 70% comes from your notes, 30% from book not covered in class.
attitude comes out in lecture a lot. covers the material too quickly on the screen and covers half of the material with her arm so you can't write everything down. She talks at the pace she writes so lectures are hard to follow. Not very approachable. Likes to compare the class to previous semesters
mean...always got an attitude when asked for help
Yeah I'm glad people are getting the clue...thanks for posting that last review. I saw her walk through the halls and she's just really ugly towards studetns. Take BIO280 or another elective besides Physiology if you need it!! If she was rude to you, file a complaint!! Professors shouldn't be paid to disrespect our students...
She is fun to talk to, but she is really strict in her grading...takes a lot of points off. She does go really fast through lectures, and her quizes are hard; simply to hard to follow.
I don't know who is posting these reviews...Dr. Tomlin is a great professor. Her job is to make Physiology a tough class in order to weed out all the people who really don't need to be in the nursing program, so of course she is going to challenge her students to think for themselves and perform at their highest level. I think she is wonderful!!
NO... Her job is NOT to weed out students, it is to TEACH physiology. This is coming from a student with a 3.6 GPA and many people in my family are professors. A good professor will teach the material in a clear way. Yes, it's good to be challenging. But professionality is also important. Take microbiology instead and you'll be much happier.
Very knowledgeable about subject matter, very helpful when you ask real questions and not just saying I don't understand, will help people with a smile who want to help themselves, covered material appropriatley, quiz material was all covered in class i never read the book and made a high A in the class (even after the final),goes fast but has to
Incredibly knowledgable in the subject ALWAYS wlling to help students during office hours...you have to do the work, BUT she will go over it with you to make sure you understand and have it right BEFORE you turn it in for a grade...she is also quite personable!
AWESOME! She is a great teacher, willing to take time with her students to make sure they understand (must ask for help!) Go in with a positive attitude, you'll do fine; she truly cares about you and your grade, just go talk to her!
Listen people. don't beat a good prof, they are hard to find. Physiology is a very tough class, probably one of the tougher ones to master. Dr. Tomlin, on the other hand, is wonderful. She is well-informed, funny, helpful and has a sincere desire to help you succeed. However, if you think you are goin to come to class once a week and pass, NOT GONN

This class is difficult - the nature of physiology. But Dr. Tomlin is very organized and very helpful during office hours. Ask questions, use the text to reinforce lecture. I studied more for this class than I have any other class - ever. Quizzes are difficult, but not unreasonable. The class itself was tough, but she is enjoyable to listen to.
She is fun to listen to but her quizes are dificult and very confusing, you can never know what is going to be on a quiz, one thing you can know though-it won't be only from the notes, you can expect everything from the book on a quiz and the questions are presented in an extremly confusing way, she makes you really think about the matter of phys.
Most wonderful teacher at UNCG. SHe is AWESOME!! so helpful. Will drop anything to help you. Such a cute lady too!
This class was very difficult, the hardest I have ever taken. Respect it. Dr. Tomlin teaches in a coherent manner and is fun to listen to, respectful and kind. The tests are hard, but that is because it should be. This is a pre-medical field class. 70% memorization and 30% analysis. Work hard and you'll make an A (as I did and plenty others).
Had her for my summer Physiology lab and she was awesome. Goes way above and beyond to make sure you understand the material. She also went out of her way to help us prepare for lecture tests and the final. UNCG is definitely lucky to have her.
highly recommend
She is extremely knowledgeable, answers question. Quizzes are tough, use the book, notes. Be able to draw the stuff & you have it. It will take time, but it is possible to do well. You must understand the stuff.
Dr. Tomlin was an awesome teacher. She is very helpful and makes things very clear. GO TO CLASS and review your notes and you will be fine. I actual enjoyed this class! :)
very very helpful, alwaays willing to help, any time, fair grading.
Very good teacher. Toghther with Lepri they make the perfect teaching pair. Very tough class. I recomend taking an easy course load with this class. You will spend a lot of time on material. Go to class if you miss one day you will be lost. Overall this class is enjoyable and very interesting.
OKAY.... the class really isn't THAT hard!! i don't know why everyone gave it a 1-2 on it..i mean.. come on guys this is a 2 hundred level course..if u think this is hard wait till u get up there!! geeezzz.. overall.. i like Tomlin and Lepri.. they are cool teachers from what i can tell, i've never talked to them personally. so I wouldn't know!
Dr. Tomlin is a great professor! This class was challenging overall but as long as you study and put in time outside of class you should do fine. Bring a recorder, it's very helpful.
YOU NEED TO STUDY! There is no way to do welll in this class by just studying the night before. You need to designate time every week NO EVERYDAY to study for this class. Although it takes alot of time, energy, and effort it is sooooooo interesting!! You will feel like a genius after you've taken the class if you already arent one!
This class is challenging, but Tomlin cares about her students, so she is very helpful in any way that you need it. You have to study, go to class, take notes, study more, and think outside the box to do well. Funny, makes jokes-so not boring. Great professor. Quizzes every week--keeps you on top of things.
She is exceptionally dedicated to the success of her students. She won't track you down, but she will help to whatever extent you seek. I've never had such an integrated and well-planned course. The material is not overly difficult, but the pace is rigorous. You MUST be ACTIVE in the learning process of you will not do well. AT ALL.
Had her and Lepri for phsiology. My grades definitely rose when she started teaching. She is crystal clear on teaching the material you need to know on the quizzes. My advice however is to not rely on the final at all to raise your grade because it is unbelievably hard.
Dr. Tomlin is an excellent professor who cares about both her students as well as her field. Make no mistake, this class requires a boatload of effort. But if you put in the time, you will be rewarded. And Tomlin will help you any step of the way if you need it.
Dr. Tomlin is an amazing professor and I have never met anyone so helpful. She goes out of her way to answer questions for both lab and lecture. Her notes are AMAZING! LEARNNN those front and back and use those to study for the quizzes. Use the textbook if you need clarification. This woman knows her stuff and I am so glad I she teaches Physiology!
Hard class unless you TAKE IT IN THE SUMMER!!!! Got a B the first round with minimal studying. Quizzes are mostly notes, uses book. The final was impossible. Our class got the highest avg ever: 65% so don't count on the final to boost your grade
She's an amazing prof. She walks you through everything and has a diagram/something to draw for everything. Its great if you're a visual learner. She was very clear and didn't hesitate to stop and answer questions.
Dr. Tomlin is a great professor! She presents the difficult concepts of physiology in an understandable way. The quizzes are straight from things she says in lecture, so record the lectures if at all possible. Overall she makes a difficult topic more presentable and understandable!
She is a really good teacher, her lectures are really well thought out and her worksheets help you visualize what she is talking about. She is super nice and you have 11 quizzes(20?) and one final(60?. As long as you study a lot and i mean a lot from the book and notes then you can easily pass. Lab is pretty hard due to critical thinking wks.
She makes the material very easy to understand as long as you keep up and ask questions at office hours or get a tutor. She can be rude when you ask questions sometimes. Overall,I LOVED this class.
This class consists of 11 Quizzes, each with 20 questions, and only 20 minutes per quiz. Overall, there is a lot of mastering online home work, and the critical thinking for the lab is just that, critically thinking. This is definately a class you will have to study hard for. I think this class weeds out a lot of pre-nursing students as well.
Will have to work hard. Consider a tutor and going to SIP. The class is taught different than perviously. Read chapter and look at online notes(Prezi/ youtube) before; in class you discuss w peers & do clicker questions. Many people only come to class quiz days bc class isn't that helpful. Buy the book & access for mastering; wont use othr stuff
I dropped the course, because we are basically teaching ourselves. The only reason she changed her style of teaching was because of a grant, and she always says that her new style of teaching increases grades but I beg to differ. Overall be ready to work hard, and do not get off track at all because it will hurt you in the end.
This class is VERY difficult, you are teaching yourself. you must prepare yourself before every class or you will fall behind, and she's not very helpful out of class either.
She was very helpful. The final was very difficult but if you at least show that you are trying, they will try to help you with the final. That doesn't mean to slack off. Study EVERY night. Even for thirty minutes. Watch her videos, go to SIP, use her charts, and talk to some students about how they study. She was nice to talk to as well.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! But the only one teaching physiology. Dr. Lepri is pretty good, but she can be rude if you ask her questions, and will question if you're actually doing your work outside of the class. Shes useless. Go to SIP get a tutor, and hopefully you'll do better. Shame its a mandatory class and it's set up so carelessly. Do better UNCG.
Retook this class because i failed the first time. My advice is if you can TAKE IT DURING THE SUMMER! I got a D the first time and ended up with a B after retaking it. Make sure you have a easy load, or this is the only class because i promise you it will comsume your life.
I took this class over the summer and while it was physically demanding it wasn't impossible. Her videos are clear and help a lot. Watch them and study every night and you can do well. The final wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. Overall made an a+ So making an a is not impossible!
This class is structured in an odd and frustrating way. She tests you about a unit before she "teaches" that unit. Be prepared to commit your entire semester to this course, it's that demanding. She will teach you next to nothing during class time, leaving you to learn everything outside of class. Not impossible, but incredibly difficult.
Does not always give as many applied exam examples as she should, but homework and quiz material is clearly defined. Must attend class for participation, especially weekly quizzes and random in class assignments. Gets grades back quick, and diligently posts notes, videos, and other relevant material online every day.
Dr. Tomlin is a different kind of professor. I actually like her. Her teaching style allows you to explore different aspects of learning and not just in a lecture format. She encourages team work and definitely outside studying and preparation. If you want to just skip class, or not prepare for the unit material, this class isn't for you. I LOVE IT
Dr. Tomlin is not a good teacher. You have to learn all the material on your own to pass the class. She quizzes you on a unit of material before even "teaching" it in class. Her "teaching" is just rambling on in class and showing a few video clips because she does not know how to teach. I would not recommend Dr. Tomlin to anyone.
She is a GREAT teacher. She makes you learn the info before hand and tests you on it before she teaches it to you, in the beginning this is rough but really a helpful way to learn. Hated this class at first now I wish I could take it again. I wish all classes were taught this way!
professor Elizabeth nice and helpful, she post power point so you can use to study for the exam, she do group and individual quiz. if any way bio 277 take her
This class is not lecture based its mores self taught. She will give you all the information that you need to be successful in the class you just have to do the work by yourself. She puts you in teams which isn't fun at all. Clicker questions everyday.
I wouldn't say that she's a hard professor, but the material for the class is hard. She makes you teach yourself before she teaches it, which sucks, but it's not too bad once you get into the rhythm of it. The final is more like the critical thinkings in lab, while the tests are more from the notes. She's willing to help if you ask.
Know how to study before you take this class! Her quizzes are easy if you know the material, her exams are a bit tougher and require you to not only to memorize the content, but be able to think conceptually about things and relate material to real life situations. Good professor though! Get a tutor! Go to SIP! take advantage of the study help!
At the beginning of the semester, I thought this class was really hard. Dr. Tomlin teaches in a way that I have never seen before, and it can be a little scary at first. She posts a LOT of information online (videos, Prezis, etc) that you have to teach yourself before you learn it in class. However, I have learned so much & really respect her now!
You basically have to teach yourself all the material and then she reviews it and goes over examples in class.
Expect to teach yourself all the material. She quizzes you on it before she explains it in class. She can be helpful if you ask for it. You really have to try and be serious about the course.
Her tests/quizzes are based off of all the information she posts online, but she doesn't teach you the information before quizzing you on it. She claims that it improves grades... Unless you wanna hear her lecture for an hour about information you were just tested on, do NOT take her class.
Exams and quizzes are fairly difficult. Tend to find yourself teaching information that she has not gone over yet. Lab is actually more intriguing than the overall class. Will have to work in a group setting when you are taking quizzes. Good if they know the answers, bad if they marked something wrong when you are telling them the right thing.
Going into this class not knowing what to expect, I came out knowing ALOT more than I thought I was going to learn. U probably heard that she doesn't "teach" the material which really isn't true. She gives us notes and everything to look over before the quiz and THEN teaches us. Def forces you to learn and I did and im so grateful! WORK HARD!
There are so many assignments, quizzes and tests, which is both good and bad. Had her for both lecture and lab. Very tough grader on the lab assignments. It is not a difficult course, it's just time consuming. You just need to understand the material and take the time to go over all the resources she provides.
It's not difficult - just a lot of material. You have 10 question tests before she begins a unit, so you are responsible for learning the material beforehand; she gives you all the resources that you need, including videos, online homework, and note templates. There are also in-class assignments (done in groups), so attendance is pretty important.
The worst part about this class is that you have to teach yourself the material before she does. She doesn't really have a real lecture. During lecture time, you don't really learn anything. After lecture test, next class timd you will have a quiz on the next unit that you have to teach yourself previously. Critical thinking graded harshly.
The class is set up as a flipped class, meaning you have to read all of her printouts and all of her videos before class and the class is more about clearing up things you learned on your own. She also quizzes you on the information before she ever talks about it in class. Her tests are pretty detailed, so you need to study very carefully.
Here we go. Tomlin has these things called iRATs, which are quizzes given in class before the unit is taught. You are expected to learn the entire unit (which is usually a body system like the reproductive system) and take a 10 question prequiz. These are the only quizzes in the class and basic math will tell you that you get a 80 if you miss 2.
Hard class, but you really do get to know the material. Just study the material and it will be fine.
As long as you put in time/effort, you will do well in class despite what others say. Tomlin teaches you the material, just differently than students are used to. Her IRATs/exams are straight forward; however, her final requires you to not just know the information but to also apply your knowledge to situations. She has a method to her madness!
She was okay. I could tell she was passionate about what she was teaching and that made the class more interesting. Online quizzes were really difficult but you get two attempts at least. Test were not as hard but you have to study for them. Overall I enjoyed the class.
Be prepared to study BEFORE lecture. It is possible to succeed and you will learn a lot if you dedicate yourself to studying.
Theres literally an iRat every week so youre studying 24/7. Instructions are very vague about what to study; you just take notes and watch videos AT HOME before you come to class otherwise youll be lost. Gotta learn how to finesse (ill let you figure how to do that) I would only take her again if i was forced to.
You have to learn everything on your own
Literally have to learn everything on your own. How is a person supposed to learn if they have to teach themselves? They could be teaching themselves the wrong thing for all they know. When we have lecture tests, we only get 30 minutes to do it, and then we start a whole new chapter/unit right before class ends No break for the brain or anything.
She can be rude, especially if you email her. The class is fast paced and requires a lot of studying -- SIP and a tutor make a difference. Lab work is graded harshly, and answers have to be to a T.
Prof. Tomlin will not hold your hand but she will give you everything you need to succeed. Go to SIP, get a tutor, network with other students for old iRATs and exams and you'll do fine as long as you study your butt off.
You have to learn the material before showing up to lectures which is difficult but, in the end, is very rewarding with regards to your physiology knowledge in the long run. She gives a lot of individual and team tests which are basically mini quizzes on each section which can be annoying to study for, but prep you for exams.
Idk if its her as a teacher or the bio department curriculum but no. Something needs to change if were gonna teach ourselves at least talk about key info in class not just talk for the sake of talking. Also one of those teachers that act like its the end of the world if she hears or sees a phone. Were college students relax
SHE'S THE BEST I'VE TAKEN HER TWICE NOW
I had her for my Bio lab, if you like to make your own experiments then this is the class you should take, but be prepared to use excel and power point for almost everything and you will collect a lot of Data.
This course is so heavy in material You must print out every paper or template- watch the videos! I suggest having a binder dedicated to this class only to stay organized The irats can be tough and so are the Exams You need to know how to finesse your way through this course. She takes attendance I suggest going to every session Those points add up
Dr. Tomlin is a great professor who really cares about the success of her students. You will no do well if you skip class because she does team assignments often. This is a flipped class so you really have to prepare yourself before class or it will be a waste of time. Beware of the final exam!! I had an A in this class all year and failed the exam
In this course, you need to be ready to work. On the first day, you need to have already taken notes to prepare for the class. This is the toughest class I have taken and Im a freshman! Can be very stressful, but always plan to study at least 3 times a week. Make sure you have a planner to keep up with due dates and study with friends. Worth it!!!
As long as you put in the effort, you'll do great. The class is flipped, so you study and take quizzes before the professor ever covers the material. She provides really helpful videos to study, but time in class felt useless. She'd mostly lecture us about class attendance and didn't review much material as the term went on. Final is a killer.
Dr. Tomlin is a great professor but she is an extremely tough grader, her tests and quizzes are for the most part horrible. The tests are not for a beginning level. Great professor but this course will make you cry at least 5 times a week and question everything you thought you learned.
Study BEFORE class! If you watch her videos and read over material it will help when in lecture. Also, the exams are more difficult than expected, so make sure you understand everything clearly.
Get ready for the worst semester of your life. This professor thinks her class is the only one that you have/only one that matters. I spent an excessive amount of time working for this class. The tests are difficult and I swear she enjoys making her students suffer. She doesn't like to provide help and acts like you're dumb if you need it.
Dr. Tomlin is something else. She is rude/condescending in her email responses. Tomlin needs to be humble, has a god complex, and oblivious. Be prepared for IRAT/TRAT and lecture tests. Her lectures are useless, I only went for clicker points. Overall, her class is informative yet time-consuming. I'd advise you to make friends with others to pass.
Well where do I even begin. Tomlin thinks that your life should revolve around her class. She makes you feel dumb if you dare to ask her anything via emails or in her office. She has no respect for anyone. Also, she' a know it all. AND doesn't even care if you get the material or not. be ready to study every single day and ignore your other classes
Good luck taking Tomlin. She is the worst professor I've ever had. Her class is completely backwards and defeats the purpose of what a college lecture should be. She swears that the way she teaches is beneficial but IT IS NOT. SOME STUDENTS CAN NOT TEACH THEMSELVES. FINAL IS SO DIFFICULT. I can not stress how negatively this class impacted me.
Professor Tomlin was a great professor! She really cares about the well-being of her students! Would highly recommend taking her class. She really teaches you how to do well in her class, however it will take time and 100% effort.
Dont. Just dont. Take it somewhere else.
I had to drop this class because she makes us teach ourselves. Her "flipped" teaching does not help at all. When we take a lecture test, we start learning something new that same day.
Dr. Tomlin has a HUGE heart and is extremely caring. The class is flipped so you learn the material before she talks about it in class which is way more beneficial than just memorizing things. The final is a killer though, it dropped my grade 7 points but if you do well, youll still have an A after it. Not sure how people can give her a low rating
I took this class online. You have to study before lecture and take 2 quizzes but It helped me alot in learning otherwise i would not learn as efficiently. Final was a bit tough but that's the point of learning physiology that you should know how to apply it in real life situations. If you are someone that hate assignments this class is not for you
She structures her class to be an "active learner". When all it does is barely feeds you information, then when you try to study and learn it. You get surprised on the tests and homework numerous times. In how she chooses to word things or knowing details she did not cover at all. Then getting low scores thanks to that.
I am convinced anyone that does not like Dr. Tomlin either, does not want to learn or expects hand-outs. She has high expectations for students but her class is SUPER organized and she gives out so many resources so if a student does not take advantage of the countless resources she gives, it is on them. I really learned how to learn with her.
Tomlin has a flipped classroom, meaning you have to teach yourself. I found that the class itself isn't too hard if you're willing to put an adequate amount of work in, but she screws all her students over with an extremely difficult final exam, not at all similar to any of the other ones you take during the course.
The class wasn't too bad. I was really fascinated with a lot of the material that was covered. Final was fair since she said all semester that the course was cumulative. If you keep a binder, print all diagrams out, use a white board, study frequently, and attempt to apply the material to your daily life, then you should be fine!
She practices a "flipped" class. This is where students literally teach themselves and she just answers questions. But how do you ask questions on something you have no idea about? Literally the units are rushed through. You finish unit 1 on Tuesday and unit 2 is due on Friday. It is literally a self taught class. Everyones confused in class.
Dr. Tomlin is a great Professor! Her class might be difficult but you will learn how to study for all your future classes. The most important thing to do when taking the course is to listen to what she tells you. She will tell you how to pass her class and she will give you all the information needed to succeed. Come to class prepared!!!!!
She "teaches" in a flipped classroom where you basically teach yourself EVERYTHING. Seems like a nice woman but I'm not a fan of her teaching style at all.
Professor Tomlin is a sweet professor, but her class is difficult. She teaches her course in a flipped fashion, where the students teach themselves, we have an assessment, and then review after. I personally struggled with this teaching style, but I learned something new.
Has a "flipped classroom" which is just a euphemism for not teaching. Students have to teach themselves everything. Despite the pandemic, she was not as lenient or understanding as many other professors. Seemingly forgets that students have personal lives and other classes. Certainly doesn't help if you have neurodevelopmental/learning disorder(s).
This class was boring, wasnt really a help to understand everything. Went way too fast for the learning objectives, have Irats and lecture test that are hard and makes you second guess yourself. Make some friends in this class and tutoring as soon as the class start! I wished she broken down everything instead of us learning the material ourselves
I took bio 277 (physiology) with tomlin spring of 2021. Online class and we don't meet. She is the worst teacher I've ever had. Your success depends on yourself. She's rude and her main focus is stopping cheaters rather than helping us reach our full potential. I hate her class, she makes me feel dumb, she isn't helpful. I earned my A on mw own.
Tomlin does not care about any of her students' success. She's always worried about cheating when we wouldn't have to cheat if she just taught. She makes you test on the material and then teaches it after you've tested. She loves talking about her pets and is very friendly w those who give into that. when I ask for help she makes me feel dumb.
In the midst of a pandemic, w every class being online, and having about 5+ classes, tomlin is careless. She expects so much from her students and gives us busy work that doesn't even count towards our final grade. She ignores the fact that some have 5 other classes, and decides to pile 3 tests and an exam back to back. Time management is key.
Overall, I did not enjoy my time in Professor Tomlin's physio class. The class itself was a tough subject as is; however, Tomlin was not the easiest to work with. She is very dismissive in emails and says things like "sorry no" when you ask for certain help-no explanation. She often responds in a condescending tone which made her not approachable.
Tomlin is the worst. She has the most snarky and condescending tone EVER if god forbid you ask for help. She shouldn't be the only professor for this class. Not everyone can adjust to a flipped teaching style (i.e., she seems too lazy and bothered to teach adequately and will inadvertently insult your intelligence should you ask for help). 0/10.
Just awful. She does not teach you the material. The test are like select all for like 10 different answer choices. The final will be your worst nightmare.
This class and instructor are not that bad. Dr. Tomlin was very nice and I did not find her to be condescending. She wants the best for her students and shows that. Read the text, go to lecture, and use the class materials. Accountability is big in this class and you have to put in the work. This class isn't for the lazy student wanting an easy A.
Hardest class at UNCG. Professor Tomlin hurries through all information QUICKLY, and if you get lost you're pretty much done for the rest of the semester. Do with that information what you will.
Was not a fan of her teaching methods at all. She made the class much more difficult than it had to be, especially with an extremely hard final. I am in the nursing program now and was able to learn physiology better in a week with another professor then in Tomlin's class over a whole semester. Would NOT take this course if you don't need it.
Dr. Tomlin is a really nice person. Always willing to answer questions. What I could not handle was the "flipped classroom approach". I learn slower than others so this was hell for me. Tests count more than anything and if you don't know how to study please learn now and find people who understand. That's the only way out!
Dr Tomlin is a great professor. Her physiology class is tough but if you go to lecture and study a lot youll do fine. A lot of questions that are a bit harder on the four exams are from the lectures. She gives a bonus point for each exam that is almost always from lecture. It is also helpful to read the textbook on the related topics.
Her teaching style is very hard to get used to and is very difficult for most students. Her notes do not help nor do the lectures. Team assignments and TRats are barely worth points which makes it busy work. Her tests and IRats are impossible to pass without the use of online help since the information provided before doesn't set you up for success
Okay, first off, her teaching style is not it. The way she delivers her lectures do not help in any sort of way. My biggest thing is that, right before our semester has even finished, she changes how she does lecture tests and irats. They are so much harder and it doesn't help the fact that her notes don't even help at ALL. A PhD don't mean nothin.
DO NOT BOTHER TAKING THIS CLASS!! Tomlin is a great person but not a good professor. She is more concerned with catching cheaters instead of learning. She fails to understand that not everyone learns like she does. I advise letting this be the only "hard" class you have because it will take up alot of your time. Just save yourself the trouble...
She is more concerned with catching cheaters than our actual success. Once she realized that people were passing with As & Bs she changed our lecture tests and tests to become harder in order to lower our averages. Her goal in teaching is to get the lowest possible class average to make the class seem hard. You WILL teach yourself in this class.
I originally wrote a good review for Dr Tomlin. I understand being annoyed by the people who do cheat in the class but she makes it so the people who are not cheating suffer. I think UNCG needs to have another professor teaching this class for the people who cannot handle her learning style. This class is not helping students succeed.
If you actually want to learn physiology, go ahead and start learning before you take the class. Tomlin makes you teach yourself the entire course from "notes" she creates and the textbook, which by the way none of that information is actually on any of your test. This semester she was too busy wanting to catch cheater and changing formatting.
I wish UNCG would have more professors teaching this course. Tomlin does not care about her students succeeding and cares too much about catching cheaters. She makes it more difficult for the rest of us students. Her notes do not help with anything and she loves to rush through her material. If you dont have to take this course, then dont.
Class is not worth it. Teacher only cares about cheaters and doesn't care about students' success. Seems like an ego/pride thing. Material taught does not correlate with test at ALL. Answers questions with questions and doesnt help explain. Having a PhD seems to give her entitlement and have expectations for perfect students. Not fair at all. AVOID
Doctor Tomlin is a nightmare to work with. She expects you to follow her learning objectives and have them down pat before entering class. This would not normally be an issue however she does not teach or even review the objectives in class and rather spends all of class on applying a very select few. Her test questions are unpredictable and menial
She is so pretentious and does not use lecture time valuably. She doesnt care for students struggles and focuses on catching cheaters instead of acknowledging intelligence. She thrives off of us failing and doesnt give proper tools for learning. its purely self taught and fast paced. i would never wish the displeasure of her class on anyone.
i wouldnt recommend this class unless you literally have no other choice. she cares more about cheating then anything else and because of this, she makes things harder then they need to be. majority of her questions no longer come from the learning objectives provided for us. She moves at a fast pace so if ur a slow learner like me, get a tutor!
Lectures are pointless except for getting credit for IClicker, tRATs and team assignments since Tomlin does not instruct during the allotted lecture time. There are zero lecture notes provided throughout the semester that will aid you in this course. Learning objectives provided are not consistent with content applied on lecture tests. Avoid!
This teacher does not teach. You will meet three days out of the week and will only learn 30% on the material in class. The other 70% you better be ready to teach yourself. She is very strict and you will have random team assignments in class. So if you miss a day, she might have a team assignment, but you will not know until you get to class.
Professor Tomlins class setup wasnt bad, she gives you the information you need each unit to teach yourself and to succeed in each iRat(quiz). However, Tomlin herself was kind of bad, as all she ever did was accuse the whole class of cheating because the grades were too high (averages of 80). She changed test formats just to make them harder.
Shes so rude and condescending. The way she speaks to people is disgusting, smart ass mouth for absolutely no reason. If you ask her for any help she just tells you to study more. And her exam and quiz questions are so confusing. She talks about absolutely nothing in lectures. Shes either complaining or telling stupid little stories.
Horrible professor.
she has a flipped classroom, so you teach urself the material. multiple individual and team quizzes, pop up team assignments, four exams and a cumulative final. ur going to need to dedicate time to study for this class. physio itself is an interesting subject tho but its hard and a lot to remember. but good luck!! and dont miss class
Final exam average 48% (F) with 258 students.
I knew this class was going to be tough, but I really hated the flipped class approach, where you basically have to teach yourself everything. Tomlin can be nice, but she can be aggressive, especially after her hunt for cheaters. She made it harder for people who didn't cheat, like me, to succeed. DO NOT TAKE HER! At least she did curve our final.
Physiology is a very tough course. Study hard from the BEGINNING and you will be fine. Do not simply study homework answers but learn to apply the concepts to real life situations. STUDY STUDY STUDY. Dr Tomlin provides you with adequate resources, highly recommend going to lecture and participating in team assignments as this is very helpful.
Be prepared to teach yourself. She whines so much during lectures she runs out of time to teach. Don't go to the Professor for help, she is rude and doesn't try to explain wrong answers. You will learn more from the SI and Lab instructors than the actual professor. Take advantage of lab and SI meetings to ask questions. Good luck, you'll need it.
I definitely don't agree with anyone saying she doesn't teach. She literally provides videos for each section with detailed walk through and drawings to help you visualize the material. Although it is a flipped learning, she provides so much material to review, and as long as you put in the effort and don't expect a free A, you'll get it.
This was my worst experience with a professor at UNCG. Her teaching style is seemingly backwards and it is extremely difficult to be successful through this teaching style. The course is quiz heavy so be prepared for that !
Get ready to teach yourself. Prepare yourself for an 8 am class. She accuses you of cheating if you do too well on the harder exams.
The format of this class and the concept behind it is great but the execution behind it is terrible. Also the way she words her questions she purposely tries to trick you on alot of questions. Also I did not learn alot while in class I learned more by going to the SI sessions and tutoring and felt like they were more my teachers than her!
The reversed classroom method employed by Dr. Tomlin is garbage
Do not pay too much attention to the negative reviews. No other Bio professor will give you as much information and help as she does in my opinion. She literally writes out notes for each unit to the point that you dont even need a book. If I had to give you any advice, it would be to read and KNOW her notes and do the homework early.
She has alot of bad reviews but I think its because mostly sophmores are taking this class and they are not really sure how to study. She is an amazing instructor, she gives you so much information to succeed. As long as you put in the work you will pass. Dont Be LAZY!!!
Dr. Tomlin uses the flipped classroom method so take all of the notes before the unit begins; lectures are for review. Don't expect to pass the final, the average grade this semester was 60%, no 100%. Her classes are engaging but please study hard outside of class. Take this class as your ONLY difficult course for the semester. Good luck!
All these bad reviews are wrong. She's amazing, clear, funny, available for help, loves her job, the exams are exactly what the lectures were, etc. If you genuinely do all the assignments and show up, you'll get at least a B-. It's a hard subject, but 10/10 professor.
Hands down one of the worst professors to ever exist. Anyone that says otherwise must've been on drugs while taking her class. Her canvas page set up gives me a HEADACHE and it is reallyyyyy easy to get a horrible grade in this class. I have taken much harder classes than this and they weren't set up this bad.
This is the first C I have ever made in a class. I have taken 300 and 400 level courses and they were not as difficult as this class. The material is not even hard, it is the way the class is set up. The only way to possibly succeed in this course is if this is the only class you are taking. Going to office hours is not helpful.
Tomlin is a tough professor, and the material in general is not easy. However, she knows what she's talking about and is helpful when you go to her office hours. If you don't go to lecture, you won't pass; her tests are pretty much exactly what she covers in lecture. She wants you to succeed, but she's not going to do the work for you.
After taking this class I am really surprised by the reviews. You definitely have to get your time management in check to get adjusted to the flipped classroom approach, but it's not THAT bad. She is nice, funny, and wants you to succeed. Make a genuine effort to do the notes and homework, ask questions if needed....you got this :).
She was very helpful in this lab. Anytime we needed clarification or help performing the exercises, she was more than willing to help.
Excellent lecturer. Explains difficult concepts well and makes material easier to understand. To do well in this class: show up prepared and ready to participate within your team (it's not just your grade - it's theirs too). If you don't understand a concept lean on your teammates, join a study group, go to tutoring or office hours.
Dr. Tomlin is super sweet and a great professor. Physiology itself is challenging and cumulative but she will help you with whatever you don't understand, you just have to make the effort to reach out to her. Everything that she quizzes and tests you on are all based on the notes that are provided and from lecture as well.
Tomlin is a decent professor, but she does not teach the material in a useful way. Her lectures were confusing and poorly structured. She uses a flipped classroom, which is not a bad idea, however, she does a horrible job with it. Be prepared to be tested on the material before she goes over it in class. I did find her office hours to be helpful.
This is a flipped class meaning that you have to teach yourself and learn the materials beforehand. It may sound terrifying at first but it's not horrible and she still lectures. Be prepared before class because you will be quizzed on the new material. Tomlin's pretty cool and she does a good job teaching this course, helping her students succeed.
Dr. Tomlin does seem to care about student success. However, test grades weigh very heavily and it *can* be easy to get behind. We had team assignments, multiple quizzes, and a flipped classroom (you teach yourself the material before lectures). I highly recommend incorporating active learning strategies into your study sessions!
She is a sweet lady at times. Her teaching method sets students up for failure. She gives her reasoning behind it but she mine as well say "i am just lazy." Be prepared to teach yourself everything and pray. Say goodbye to all free time.
This class is you teaching your self, which she does state pretty clearly in the syllabus and on the first day on class. She calls it a "reverse classroom". If you do not have good study habits or you procrastinate you are going to struggle. The lectures are not really helpful for test and Irats.
The course is already hard enough and the professor was not helpful when explaining the material. Lectures were confusing and poorly structured. The teaching method sets students up for failure. The professor does not seem to care about student success. Be prepared to teach yourself. The only good thing is that the tutors help in class.
Physiology was a flipped class where we had to teach ourselves the material before coming to lectures. We would get tested on the material before (iRAT) she explained it in next lectures. The only issue is that the iRAT would contain questions that were not in the textbook or the material she provided for preparation. The final was also difficult.
Dr. Tomlin was a great professor and she was very good at explaining the topics in this course. Physiology is a difficult course overall but if you apply yourself and put in the work outside of class (it is a flipped course), it makes it so much easier.
This class was a very different class than what I was used to as it was a flipped course. Where she would provide the material for you to look over, study, and learn by yourself, then the lecture was simply used to explain some things and answer questions. This style of teaching took me a bit to get used to at first.
The "flipped classroom" in my opinion is lazy. She says she will go over some things in class, but then leaves no time for ANYTHING to be explained. I feel like I learned the material and knew what I was doing, but my tests weren't reflecting that. She is better off teaching a normal classroom style and I think students would learn better.
Physiology with Prof. Tomlin is a challenging course, but manageable with effort. The flipped classroom format requires self-learning, which can be tough. Utilize resources like the textbook, study groups, and tools like Unstuck study to stay on top of the material. Engaging in class makes a big difference.
Ms. tomlion is a very Sweet professor , However her class was very challenging. It was very hard because half the time she didnt even know what she was talking about. She will ask you a question with a question which was very annoying at times. Just be ready to basically teach yourself this class.
Dr. Tomlin is by far one of my favorite professors, she is very funny and caring and very lenient when it comes to HW, quizzes, and tests. She teaches everything we need to know for the tests and quizzes. I love her so much that I'm going to take her Physiology class in the summer!!
this prof was the worst, you teach yourself EVERYTHING, test are 64% of your grade and you have one almost every week, shes rude and hard to work with, lectures are bland, her lectures are weird timing (mod 8 will be "taught" before you take mod 7 test), overall i would avoid.
She's not terrible but not a good professor either. Just be prepared to teach yourself everything. There's a test and a quiz every week. Put in the work and study and you should be fine
Dr. Tomlin uses useless data to back her flipped lecture style. As someone who put lots of effort into the class, my grade does not reflect this. Although she will not be teaching 277 anymore, avoid her at all cost for 111 as well, unless you enjoy hours of self teaching outside of lecture. She is also passive aggressive when asked for help.
Her teaching style is very lazy and requires a lot of self teaching. She will talk about unrelated topics the class before a test. She is friendly, but could not seem to keep her political bias out of the classroom. Overall, this was a challenging course.
She uses a weird teaching style where you are quizzed on the material before its taught, majority of learning is teach yourself first style, will be put in groups she creates for the entirety of the semester, uses word play to trick you on the quizzes and exams(multiple choice), will need a clicker or your clicker grades won't be accepted!
You're expected to learn the material before taking the iRAT quizzes. I recommend looking up past quizzes to understand the types of questions asked. Work through each problem carefully, figuring out why certain answers are wrong and remember they are NOT the same questions she will ask. Seek tutoring for additional support. She's a little mean.
Very difficult to understand and also too many tests and quizzes.
A lot of students simply don't do the reading, they don't do the assessments or follow the skeletal notes that are provided, all the lectures and more are in canvas, the quizzes and tests have rubrics too which literally tell you what's on the test, I hear so much people complain but when I asked one person they didn't even know about the rubric
I enjoyed Dr. Tomlin's personality and teaching style. There are many readings but it is really not as hard as people make it out to be. For Bio majors, this is an easy pass. If you are taking this course for GED's requirements then there may be a challenge. Your grade is a reflection on effort on the course. Set 3 hours a week for this course.
1. High number of tests and quizzes; you initially struggle but you will realize it's in your best interest. 2. Quiz questions repeat on the test. Dr. Tomlin will tell you what to read and what not to. 3. Quiz/test questions are based on powerpoints, HW is based on textbook. She is a GREAT professor and lectures are interactive and humorous. Do it!
Dr. Tomlin places heavy emphasis on HOW to study the content, not the difficulty of the content itself; that once you master your approach to studying, the difficulty level of any kind of material is no longer an excuse. The fact that she gives out a lot of tests allows room for people to improve their grades. Her tests are based on Powerpoints.
Great professor, she cares about our education. She gives hw, powerpoints, readings, 8 quizzes (10q), and 8 tests (20q, final 40). She gives the same quiz twice, one alone (close note) and one in groups (open note). Her grading is interesting; each question is 0.5 points, so if you have like 3/5 (quiz), that's an 80%. Tip! Study the slides & hw!!
Tough grading with no extra credit and expects you to be a master
She moves too fast. She stays talking about her chickens
She is ok.. says in her syllabus that you have to notify her for missing tests/quizzes 24 hrs in advance and I tried to retake a quiz in the 24 hr span and she didn't let me for "cheating purposes". A lot of information to take in, quizzes and test are cumulative, answers questions efficiently and is fast at taking notes. Go to class prepared.
Dr. Tomlin is the first bio teacher I haven't hated, won't lie it's a lot of work, I was so nervous for this class. She is very genuine and quirky which I love and will help you with anything if you approach her properly. Overall, learned a lot from that class about bio but also about how to effectively study.
Good prof, test heavy though. Anyone complaining about her bio111 class simply didn't pay attention lol. She has a clear pattern where she goes over material, gives a quiz worth 10%, then within 2-4 days gives a test which is essentially the quiz with more questions. Literally all you have to do is attend lecture, take notes and memorize diagrams.
Loved this class! Dr.Tomlin gives you everything you need to get an A. This class is test heavy but we have quizzes like 2 days before the tests and they're essentially the same so you have time to review what u don't know for the test. Everything is multiple choice, tests and quizzes are not hard just show up and study and you will do good.
Had to take this class for my Comp Sci degree and I wish someone would have stopped me and told me to pick literally any other professor available. Expects you to study the content for about 2-3 hours every day in order to stay on track with the weekly quizzes and tests. She also puts some assignments due now, in next months modules, like why?
There is a test or quiz nearly every other week which means nearly every class period, there were assigned seats. You will need to study outside of class because she moves very quickly. She only gives 10 minutes for quizzes and 25 minutes for tests. No extra credit
Dr. Tomlin was really a nice person but her class was absolutely ridiculous. Having a test and a quiz every single week when the quiz are 10% your grade and the test are 65% of your grade is insane. Also idk where she pulls these questions from, but they are not remotely close to the lecture, Objectives or skeletal notes. Don't take this class.
