Professor Watson's class is a waste of time. She spends class time lecturing on examples that don't make sense and harps on ideas that aren't on the tests or quizzes. The quizzes she gives are online and are completely unrelated to class material. It is much more beneficial to teach yourself directly out of the book, but she takes attendance. AWFUL
I agree with the other review. This class was a huge waste of time. She keeps talking about ideas and giving examples in economics that do not help us understand the materials at all. She only grades from quizzes and exams. Also, which are COMPLETELY unrelated to what we learn in class. Might as well teach ourselves. dreaded this class
Our midterm grades were handed back and out of around 250 students, 135 students received f's, 58 received D's, 37 received C's and 4 received B's. There was not a single A. She does graph problems in class but does not talk about concepts, those you have to learn on your own. Best of luck to anyone who is risky enough to take her class.
She just rambles on about useless information. You're better off not going to class and teaching yourself because she just confuses you.
This is really the type of class where you need to learn how to teach yourself. All her lectures barely follow the textbook and the quizzes go exactly by the textbook. The midterm was a mixture of both so it's hard to understand what she really wants. She did take attendance the first couple of days, but eventually stopped.
You will have to teach yourself from the textbook. There are minimum grades. She likes to talk in class but it's not helpful information. We have to use MindTap, a program she doesn't even like. The majority of the class failed the midterm and she did not curve anything. DMSB's goal is to have a C average for the class, which we don't meet.
I feel bad for bashing her since she seems genuine at heart, but if you value your GPA stay away. Her quizzes online have no relevance to anything you learn and the midterm worth around 30% of your grade 81/113 kids in our class failed. No curve or anything. Her teaching isn't bad, but it doesn't matter because you aren't graded on what you learn.
She is NOT a good teacher. Definitely would not recommend. STEER CLEAR!
The things she teaches in class does not help us on the online quizzes or midterm/final. There are no tests, you are only graded on the extremely hard online quizzes and the midterm and final. The lectures are interesting but don't really help us learn anything useful.
This is the absolute WORST professor ever. The quizzes are useless. None of it is what she teaches in class. She's always rambling on about different ideas that doesn't even make sense. There are only two tests the midterm and final and multiple quizzes. Please stay far away from taking her.
Was not too fond of Prof. Watson. Grade relies solely on midterm, final, and online quizzes. Taking notes can help, but I've found multiple times that she fails to even cover the material necessary to complete the online quizzes. More than half of my lecture hall of 245 scored a D or below on the midterm. Reading the book WILL help your grade.
The quizzes are so hard but they are online so Take them in study groups. Pay attention in class. It's the only way you will pass the quizzes.
This is the worst professor i have ever had. She is rude and doesn't teach the material well. She doesn't curve grades even when over half the class fails. We only received 3 grades for the entire year, so if you screw up one you were basically done.
Worst class I've ever taken. Do not take this professor! Over 80% of the class failed the first test (her number, not mine,) and no one got an A. Does not teach what will be on the tests.
Professor Watson can't teach. It is as simple as that. You are only graded on 3 assignments: The midterm, The final, and online quizzes. She lectures on topics that you will never use so when it comes time for the quiz you wont know anything. You MUST teach yourself. Over half of my 245 person class failed her midterm. STAY AWAY FROM HER
she is the worst professor i have ever had. i really have absolutely nothing good to say about her. do not take her. 17% of my class PASSED the midterm and there is only midterm, final and online quizzes that unless you have a chegg account you will probably fail. stay far far away if you somewhat value your gpa
Dont do it. almost impossible to get an A. Only 2 tests, 80% + failed the midterm and there is little opportunity for other grades. Just online quizzes that are extremely challenging without a chegg account. Basically have to teach yourself Microeconomics. Rarely learned anything from the lecture.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT take this class. Run as far away as you can. What we learn in class is completely irrelevant to what we are quizzed on. I'm sorry but when only one person out of almost 400 people across two classes gets an A on the midterm there is something wrong with the course. This course is going to wreck my GPA.
Do not take this class I promise you you will regret it. She is an absolutely awful teacher, and I honestly think she enjoys watching us struggle/fail. There are only 2 tests (Mid Term and Final) and they have nothing to do with what you do in class and neither do the quizzes. 135 people failed our midterm and there were 0 A's. That says something
I wasted my money and time being in this class. If you want to pass with this teacher you have to teach yourself out of the book, which makes taking the class pointless. The test were beyond difficult and she gives you no material to review. Almost all your grade is weighted on two test, a midterm and final. Good luck.
I aced macroeconomics but with Professor Watson, I am failing. She will NOT answer questions about material on quizzes or tests. The quizzes are online and she told us herself she doesn't like the program but we use it anyway. There is not room to boost your grade, no curves even though if most fail. She is slow at replying e-mails, if at all.
Worst teacher I've ever had she singlehandedly kept me from getting the GPA I worked so hard for and deserved. Do not take her class if you value your GPA and a want a teacher who wants you to do well. When I went in to talk to her after 1 out of 500 students made an A on the midterm she told me that "half of the class has to fail".... Bad teacher
Do not take this class there is literally no point. She is not a professor she stands there all class and draws one graph. Halfway through the semester I realized that she was not teaching anyone anything and had to learn the whole course by watching youtube videos. By far the worst professor I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! All she does is draw graphs on the board to go over a concept and never talks about it or see it again. She teaches us the concept but never how to apply it to a situation, which is basically what's on the tests. Only 3 grades (quizzes(hw), midterm, final). There were no A's and 135 Fs on our midterm
This class almost rioted- this teacher made a lecture hall of 245+ students angry after a midterm in which she changed the grading scale post-test and refused to inform the students of their grades unless they were in the specific class she handed them back in, in a non-mandatory attendance. This information was emailed right before class.
Almost all grades come from tests & her tests are extremely difficult & worded to trick you. She writes "if you have a question about the test, don't ask, figure it out yourself" on the front of every exam, her lectures don't teach you anything, she talks down to students like they're inferior to her, 0/10
The homework is hard and tricky,the grading for the homework is also unreasonable.
From the previous posts I was scared to take her but honestly, she's become like a mentor to me. If you've already taken macro and actually work and study, there's no reason you shouldn't get a B in the class, if not an A. Homework is graded by average of your attempts for each problem which sucks but it's Aplia not her. MC on tests are tricky.
The homework that is online is super hard and based off of the textbook. Not to mention that the homework attempts are averaged together. The quizzes are sometimes worded tricky and are more based off lectures and not the textbook. The test are also tricky and long. The class overall is very confusing and hard.

One of the worst teachers I've had. She is extremely rude and sarcastic and makes you feel bad about asking questions. She does not cover important material, you must teach yourself everything from the textbook. If you have to take this class, go as much as you can because she gives extra credit to make up for the impossible questions on tests.
This class is very difficult, although I do believe she has changed quite a bit from past years. She was always nice to me, but she can be very sarcastic. Great with 1-on-1 but lectures can be tough. Tests are hard. She gave a ton of extra credit but you have to be in class to receive it. Be prepared to work for your grade.

She's very knowledgeable in Econ, but doesn't understand how to relay that into tests. The tests are insanely hard, the questions can be from homework, but most are random and don't align with the study guide (if she gives you one). Homework(25%)-online textbk- 2 Tests(20% each) Final(35%). Youtube saved my grade, but go to class for Extra Credit.
Professor Watson is a great professor. If you show up to class and you do your work you will pass the class. She gives out a ridiculous amount of extra credit if you come to class. I had to get a 39 on the final to get an A in the class. She's also willing to meet outside to give extra help. I also found her extremely funny and thorough.
Prof. Watson is not fit to teach lecture based classes. she would come to class asking what we wanted to learn instead of telling us what to learn. she just drew graphs on board. You could probably benefit more by not going to class and teaching yourself from the book. overall nice and sarcastic lady. Extra credit helps out a lot.
I loved this class! I'm biased because I really love the subject of economics, but Dr. Watson did not disappoint. If you take her class, please be active and participate in lectures! It makes her day when students speak up and ask questions or examples and it makes the class way more interesting for you.
If you actually go to every class and pay attention and take notes you will do extremely well in this class. Some of the lectures can be boring but it helps to read the chapter in the textbook before going to class and to watch youtube videos on the topics that are confusing. Professor Watson offers a ton of extra credit if you go to class.
Overall not a bad teacher. Class is mostly her going over examples. She talks really fast, but gives A LOT of extra credit. She doesn't take attendance, so for the people who do go to class she gives away free extra credit points counting towards past exams.
She has terrible previous reviews so I was hesitant to take Watsons class, but she is by far the best teacher Ive ever had at USC. This class is incredibly difficult but she makes concepts clear and easy to understand. There are 2 tests a final, and 6 homework assignments. She doesnt take attendance but if you dont show up you WONT PASS.
Dr. Watson is easily one of the best professors I have ever had (and I've had some outstanding professors). It's very important to her that she not only teaches facts and information but that above anything, she helps foster the way we think. She knows so much, and is intensely passionate about economics. It's a very relaxing but rewarding class.
Everyone says she is bad and the class its self is hard but it really isnt. She explains things really well and when asked a question she is good at explaining it. The class is simple algebra and people dont want to study thats why they do bad. Its like a math class. You actually have to do the HW to learn it. Its a lot to take in just go to class.
She's a very nice person, however she covers information very quickly and there are few opportunities to improve your grade if you do poorly on something. You're only graded on 3 exams and a project and the project itself is honestly more work than it's worth but you're screwed if you don't do it. She makes it harder than it needs to be
This class is so hard. She tries to be funny but it just comes off as condescending. She takes attendance from ungraded classwork. The material is really hard to learn and all of the homework comes from and access code with the textbook. I know a lot of people in my class and almost everyone is failing. I never want to come to this class.
She is amazing at explaining the material and super engaging. She occasionally takes attendance by making you turn in practice problems done in class. There is online homework, but the answers are mostly all on quizlet, and besides a little math, most of the content is common sense. Exams are multiple choice.
Tests are extremely hard. Extra credit saved my grade. Go to class, she give extra credit for it. Very sarcastic to a point of rudeness. Not a fan. Avoid taking her if you need MicroEcon.

Dr. Watson is my favorite professor Ive had at USC. She is extremely demanding of her students but also geniuninely interested in teaching and so will go the extra mile to help students understand. She is an extremely nice woman who is very knowledgeable about Econ and uses real examples to help students understand. Would absolutely recommend.
DO NOT TAKE ECON 221 WITH ELIZABETH WATSON. This class is nearly impossible to get an A. About 85% of the class is based on exams which are all impossible. She will have months worth of class material on exams and give no sort of review or guidance before-hand all she will say when you ask about the test is "I don't know, I haven't made it yet."
Class attendance is not mandatory, is not true whatsoever dont let her fool you into that always show up to class, lots of extra credit if youre in class and missing class will mess you up on tests. There are only tests so they matter. Read the syllabus and be aware of her tricks. Pretty bad class overall
This professor needs to take away her 'framed standard' of teaching and grading. If you go to class, you will definitely learn something that can be useful perspective of economics but I can't tell you that will be on your exam. Invest your time studying economics by yourself, not by her notes. If you don't, A is impossible.
Best Professor I've had all my time here at USC. She's very caring, gives excellent lectures, and is really helpful in her office hours. Tests are tough but if you do the notes and all the practice problems before the tests you can get B's or better on all of them. 10/10 would take her again for Micro or any other Business class.
I've really enjoyed having Dr. Watson this semester! Economics can be difficult to understand, and she does a good job at elaborating on the subject. The exams can be difficult if you don't do the practice problems or if you don't show up to class.
If you have the option do not take Micro with Professor Watson. The class is mainly lectures and the tests are challenging and nothing like the practice problems. When you go to her for help she is condescending and rude. She should not be teaching if she is going to constantly belittle the ones who need her help the most.
Your tests are your only grades besides attendance and the tiny amount of extra credit given. Attendance is not mandatory as much as she may claim it is. Material covered in class is useless when compared to what is on tests. I would not recommend her class, and would even go as far reach out to people to make sure that they DO NOT take her class.
Tests are much harder than they need to be, and formatted to confuse you. Only graded on six things in the whole class. Lots of extra credit, but not enough to accommodate for how hard tests are. Drops the lowest test grade. Generally nice and funny, but very lecture heavy.

Make sure to get to know her because she is very nice, but her classes are very lecture heavy. Study with other people and do ALL of the review problems and readings.

Shes alright, I just didnt click with her lectures. The content is easy at first, but dont get caught off guard , itll start getting harder. I spent a lot of time studying for the tests and they were more difficult than Id hoped for but its still possible to do well.

This was by far the toughest class I took at USC. She assigns homework but doesn't check it. The tests were extremely hard and the homework/review guides don't help much. I'd recommend only taking this class if you have taken an Econ class before, or else you'll be extremely confused. She offers extra credit sometimes in class, but not a lot.
Avoid if possible. Doesn't allow computers (even for notes) and gets so sarcastic and rude if you accidentally slip up and have one. Watched her take phones out of the hands of three students once. She knows what she is doing in terms of economics. Never takes attendance. 3 pretty easy exams, 2 get counted. Just too rude. Avoid.
I don't really know why Prof Watson has bad ratings. In my Econ 224 class she has been really helpful and the work really is not that hard. You get 2 chances on the HW and she drops the lowest test, which if you study for (like every econ class) chances are you will do well. She is really good and makes ECON a little more interesting.
Some people will like her personality, others won't. Grade wise, shouldn't be too many complaints, especially for 224, the amount of extra credits and free opportunities she gives is absurd. 3 tests, one that you can even omit. I gave little to no effort because of outside reasons and managed to pull away with a B, put a little effort in, easy A
I really enjoyed Dr. Watson's class. She is by far my favorite professor I've had thus far and the reason I am majoring in economics. I really clicked with her teaching style which made it easier for me to do well. She uses many real world examples that make everything applicable and she offers extra credit. Can be sarcastic, but I found it funny.
Awful teacher that clearly holds gurdges against certain students. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT pick her if you intend to take ECON221. Does not respond to emails, will ignore you in class, and will embarrass you publicly in front of your peers if you give her the chance. Also an awful test maker, no backtracking, random scroll bars, and poor design.
Prof Watson was very nice and taught very well. I enjoyed her lectures a lot. You have to go to class because attendance is taken based on iClicker quizzes. The difficulty with the class is that there is no homework, so your only grades are attendance, iClicker questions, and tests. She gives a couple of extra credit opportunities.

Not helpful professor. Attendance grade is based on if you get quiz question in class correct, not if you attend class. Entire grade is based on 3 exams, "attendance" and final (no curves). She does not cover all the material in class, but there is no textbook so no other way to get information. You will have to attend hours of SI sessions to pass.
Professor Watson is one of the worst professors that I have ever had. Do not take this class if you want to maintain a good GPA. During her lectures she spent the majority of the time talking about personal matters, and did not teach the material. All the material on the test was content that we never covered. Had to teach myself everything to pass
I love her. My favorite Economics professor so far. This class is difficult, but her teaching style (and shift online) was amazing. I also really preferred her final project to a final exam. Overall, I liked her and her class, although she is not for everyone.

I was liking the class, struggling at points with the quiz's, but overall was feeling confident going into the final project on getting an A. But then she completely screwed me and a lot of other people on that project. Pushed me from a borderline A to a low B. For What? I followed the rubric, I don't know what else she wanted.
I am in the school of HRSM and needed to take this class to get back into Darla. This is an introductory course, I have previously taken econ and this class has been so difficult. Homework and exams don't reflect what we learn in class, time limits are unreasonable, no questions are ever answered, and she will not help you out at all.

Exp econ is not an easy class. you must come up with a lot of original research q's. she is not best at providing helpful & timely feedback. Grading criteria was not clear. test were ambiguous short answer with no guidelines to length. i am sure she helps much if you go to office hours but i did not. lectures and material can be interesting.
Her lectures are not clear and she does not give constructive criticism. Once you apply the feedback she gives you the same grade. Responds to emails slowly and cancels her office hours often. Please, do not take this class, she's horrible.
I took this class in the summer, and it did not require very much time outside of class. There was no homework, you are graded only on the exams. The material is challenging no matter who you take for this class. Her lectures were wonderful.
Hard teacher. Go to the SI sessions!! Exams are brutal, especially if you dont know what youre doing. She doesnt go over any problems in class, youll have to go to office hours.
Prof. Watson is passionate about what she teaches. She willingly admits that it's a difficult class and that she is a difficult professor. Exams are difficult and not at all like the lectures in class. I studied so hard on my exams, simply to not do well. I definitely learned a lot and SI was a lifesaver, but very hard class.
She loves to talk about herself a lot. Lectures are lengthy and the information thats needed for tests arent covered in lectures. You will need to use a textbook or outside resources to get a good grade in this class. No homework grades, the only grades for the course are quizzes and exams.

horrible. deceptive with her test questions. she knows the material well but purposefully tries to trick you for no reason on the tests and homework. over complicates the problems and is strict about tests. grading is by a point system and is awful. the exams do not match the topics covered. no guidance on the material for the final.
Professor Watson is very passionate about the content in the class, but it seems like she doesn't care whether or not her students succeed. She has given little to no guidance on what is going to be on the final. Her other exams are full of "gotcha" questions that try to trick you for no reason. Also, there are barely any grades.
There is almost no homework to balance out the difficult tests. Professor Watson assumed everyone had prior knowledge of econ (nobody sitting around me did). If SI instructors and tutors weren't there, I would have never passed. Professor did the bare minimum to help.
DO NOT TAKE. while professor watson can be a very nice lady her class is very difficult. she teaches base level knowledge of the concepts while giving you exams with questions that are extremely complex and deep. she grades on a point system and i hate it. i spend a lot of time studying and do poorly on exams. GO 2 SI it is so beneficial.
If you need the class for a credit shes not a terrible professor but, if dont pay attention you will be studying a lot for test (probs studying a lot anyway). If you study and know the information its a easy grade. Her grading is a little confusing, you dont know your actual till the end of the year. She drops your lowest test grade.
The class was not too bad overall. You definitely have to pay close attention to the material. Professor Watson did offer things to help students such as dropping the lowest exam grade and occasional extra credit. I would not have done well in the class without attending the SI sessions so I recommend going to those. Take your time on the homework.

Professor Watson is very respectful and she deeply cares about her students. Her lectures are very well designed, and she does a great job of answering students questions. However, you must study a LOT for exams because they are difficult and LONG. Exams are a high percentage of your grade so be sure to do well on those. Highly recommend!
Lectures and homework problems she provides are completely different from her test questions. Her test questions are rediculously hard and she throws in problems you have never gone over in class. Half of the tests are new information she never says in class and I go to every class and take notes. She also does take questions seriously in class.
Do not take her class. Even if you are the smartest person in the world DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am someone who has never failed a class ever and I managed to fail this one. Homework and tests are extremely difficult for no reason and that is the only thing you are graded on. Very little extra credit is given and does not do much for your grade.

Not accessible at, never responds emails. Her tests are so difficult and have nothing to do with what we learned in class. The only assignments are the three tests and a few homework assignments worth 10 points. There is nothing to balance your grade and she does not curve, so everyone is failing. DO NOT TAKE.

The negative reviews are likely from unambitious students. Prof Watson is the best teacher I've had at USC. Had for both 221 and 321, and wish I could take her again. If you are interested in Econ, she has great lectures that generate engaging discussions with the class. She teaches hard stuff, so you'll need to show up and pay attention.
I have never in all my years of undergrad had such a horrendous professor. She is absolutely one of the WORST professors I have ever had. She is extremely arrogant and will never respond to your email outside of class. I had her for 224 and I will be retaking this course with a different professor. My whole class is failing.
Professor Watson is a very poor professor at USC. She knew we were all mostly STEM majors, and did not account for our lack of background when she was lecturing. She taught us like graduate students, and her tests were nothing like her practice/lectures. She always laughed in our faces about how poor we were and shamed us when we were wrong. Awful!
This professor was very confusing and did not thoroughly explain material very well. She was very easy to approach and she responded to emails very quickly. The practice problems however did not relate to the tests but the home works did.
In order to succeed in this class you actually have to be willing to show up to every class and if you review the material she gives you, you should be fine in this class

She is a horrible teacher. Does not care if you actually learn anything from the class or pass the class. Final Exam was nothing like the first two Exams. I dont understand how a professor could be so unhelpful.
If you're looking to take 321, disregard all the reviews for 221. It is true that if you can't successfully solve an economics problem, Dr. Watson will grade you accordingly. I had a great time in this class, we laughed a lot and Dr. W always treated us like adults. You know exactly what'll be on the exams and she gives hw answers in office hours.
The ultimate economics experience.
I thought this class was good. The content was not too hard, and when it was there was always some kind of extra credit available to cushion my grade. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly suggest you go. She creates a lot of hypotheticals so be prepared to listen to those, but she also let us out early a bunch which was appreciated.

She was great at first, but as the material got harder, she barely explained things at all. Most of the time she makes the class talk to each other, and you don't actually learn it from her. The course may seem more intimidating than it actually is on the first day as she likes to scare off students. Watson has long lectures where only small portions are important content. The homework and exams are pretty much the only grades in the class so they matter heavily.
This class was set up to be passable and anyone who disagrees must not have been putting any effort in. There are TONS of opportunities for extra points, weekly low point value assignments, extra practice problems with answers if needed. Point system is great, very easy to see how many points you need to get the desired grade. Not bad for a gen ed.
If you like not knowing if you're passing or not, this is the class for you. She grades with a weird point scale which makes it hard to tell what grade you're going to get. She has literally said that the books won't help you. Her lectures are engaging but NEVER line up with the homework. Even the Econ GA has gotten a C on the quiz. Save yourself.
Professor Watson makes this class engaging during lectures and through her choice of projects. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities and is very helpful IF you seek her out. Would recommend if you are willing to show up, participate, and ask for help when needed.
Do not take her. Worst teacher I have had in college. She is so mean and is not willing to help along with exams that are extremeley difficult.
Worst professor I have had so far in college. I never thought I would be reviewing a teacher on rate my professor but I had to because she's so bad. She must hate her job and students because she is flat-out mean. If I had any advice to any other college students, DO NOT TAKE HER.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Not a good lecturer or communicator. Extremely subjective grading with nothing to back it up. She is very unpleasant both inside and outside of class. I'm not sure why she chose to go into teaching when she seems to dislike her job and her students. Take anybody but her.

WARNING*** my class started with a full three rows and ended with maybe 15-16 people. She is hands down the worst professor and teacher I have ever had in my life. She does not want you to succeed clearly and cannot give a lecture to save her life. Never responds to emails, I honestly don't think she knows what she is "teaching". Borderline evil.
