Wheaton is very diligent on note-taking. The textbook is hardly ever used, so going to class is really necessary. She makes it worthwhile, as she really "gets" college kids. She'll make jokes about weekend excursions and late-night fun. She can teach the subject and still have time to connect with the students, even with a class of 50.
All of her notes are right from the textbook pretty much. But it is alot easier if u go to class then read the book. Tests are somewhat hard but not too bad if u know material and like econ
Aplia was used. Take all practice homeworks on aplia then take the grades assignments. Questions are almost identical. This method allows you to consistently get a high grade on the Aplia assignments. As for tests, retake the practice aplia assignments for the given chapters. Tests are nearly identical to the Aplia questions.
Very cool teacher. Used aplia for quizzes, which were pretty easy and very helpful. Two tests and a final. Takes role from time to time and sometimes makes class optional. Typical college class, come to class and take notes or just read the book and do the online quizzes.
She's really good! Makes off the wall comments which are really funny at times. Very clear in her explanations. Treats you as a grown-up. No overwhelming homework. Course may seem to be going slowly but is not.Do the Aplia problems. If not enough problems, find some more on the Net. If you have problems - ask her, she'll answer! A Very Good Prof!
Dr. Wheaton is the ideal professor. Enough said.
Dr. Wheaton has been one of the more cooler professors I've had. Grades consist of attendance (5%), Aplia quizzes (20%)--which are EASY! and three exams (25% each), non-cumulative. She's friendly and funny. Easy class, great teacher. Make sure you take her notes; it's a lot easier than reading out of the book. Textbook isn't even required.
tests are theory based getwkbook.. so actual class lectures do not reflect tests. lectures are application based and for aplia.tests are nothing like aplia.aplia is relatively easy, ALWAYS GET HELP if your not sure b/c you want a good overall grade. A lec is awesome! really study theory to do well on test. good prof. but def. don't expect a curve.
Prof Wheaton is an awesome professor but her class is so difficult. She has three tests which are 20 questions each, covering 4-6 chapters each test. In this case, if you miss 2 questions, you already have a 90%. That was the hardest part of the class.
Professor Wheaton is easily one of the best professors I have had at SMU so far. If you go to class, take notes, and put the time in to study you can do really well in the class. She cares about her students and she makes Economics interesting. She really is an awesome teacher and I highly recommend her.
Prof Wheaton is a great teacher, she cares for her students and wants everyone to do their best. Highly recommended. Test are theory only so no calculations. A fair course.
Take Wheaton. She really cares about the students, and whether you actually understand the material. She lays out the notes beautifully and grades everything fairly. You WILL learn something in this course and you are given fair warning about every approaching deadline. Definitely recommended.
The tests are ridiculous. 20 MC questions over 5 chapters. Very Hard. Her class is extremely boring and she handwrites everything on the board. The way she teaches this class made me feel like I was back in 4th grade again. If you like really hard tests this class is for you.
Impossible tests. I even went in to talk to her about studying techniques and how to improve my test scores and all I got was a blank stare. Not helpful at all.
Good professor. As some others have said, margin of error is slim with each test question worth 5 points and only three tests, but she uses a very concise online textbook and if you just read the chapters carefully you will do well.
Wheaton was okay, I liked the theory of how she wanted to do the class but she was pretty useless as a teacher. She basically read the book to us in class and wrote definitions on the board. Tests are weird too, such obscure way of grading, she took off points for random things. I wouldn't take her again.
I agree with the person right below me. In theory her teaching is great, but then she reads right from the book and cannot apply her lesson to real life scenarios. Her grading was skeptical. She provides a helpful review sheet to the test. So.. take her if you like the concepts of economics, avoid if you like the mathematics of econ!
Very good teacher, really does want the best for her students and is a really funny teacher.
Wheaton is an incredible lady and really cares about her students.. and the world at large. That being said, I'm pretty sure she's one of the most difficult econ teachers. Her tests are wordy multiple choice, so even if you know a lot on the subject, it may be hard to choose the right answer for each complicated question.
She is a interesting, passionate teacher and she makes the class interesting for the class. I thought the tests were not terribly hard and I enjoyed my homework and studying for this class because of how much she made me love the class and subject matter. I would recommend her to anyone who actually tries in school!
Wheaton is a wonderful and helpful lady. Her tests are 20 question multiple choice, which is difficult for most. Was willing to help, but her class was difficult. If you enjoy economics she's great, otherwise I would not recommend.
BEST ECON TEACHER EVER! Her explanations were so clear and her teaching style is laid back and so easy to understand. Lecture is required and if you don't go you will be sorry because she is so helpful and you will need your notes for the exam reviews and hw. She's super nice too. Her classes fill up fast so hurry!
Loved this professor. Not easiest in the econ faculty, but her method of teaching is straightforward and relatable. She will help you if you ask, and will review anything with you. Some stuff on Aplia she didn't cover, but again she would help. 20 Q MC tests, all theory; I liked, but some didn't, still had to study. Really neat lady.
Professor Wheaton's class has changed my major. If that doesn't speak loud enough for my respect and adoration for her then nothing can. She is the best economics teacher I have ever had. She is brilliant and so interested in the subject and her students its hard not to look forward to her class every day. I will now be majoring in economics.
Had her for Micro.. pretty good teacher especially for such a large class. Take notes! And do some book/aplia review for the tests and you will succeed. Not really hard class. GO TO CLASS. She takes 0.5 off your final grade for each class you miss (up to 10 classes max). I recommend her
Tests are all short answer and graphs. Grades very meticulously on graphs but lenient on short-answer questions. Presentation is easy but grading system for presentations are tournament-based, so your grade is a complete crapshoot.
I had her for micro and for macro and her class is great! There's online quizzes every week that make up 25% of your grade, and 3 tests (including the final) that are each 25%. The tests are 20 MC questions based on theory. You really can't mess up on any of the tests if you want an A & she takes 1/2 a point off your final grade for every absence!
Dr. Wheaton is a good lecturer, but the rest of her class is not. You have to pay for an online service to do the required homework. Also, her tests are incredibly frustrating. They are 20 convoluted multiple choice, so missing even two can have a big impact on your grade. Also, she deducts .5 of a point for every class you miss.
Tests are all short answer and graphs. Grades very meticulously on graphs but lenient on short-answer questions. tests are not easy. you have to study hard and have to go to class to do well in the class. final project is a grade booster but tests are dfficult. if you skip class your grade will suffer. know your graphs. shes a toughy
Wheaton is a good lecturer but her 3 tests are extremely difficult (20 multiple choice theory questions which makes up 20% of your grade). She is very willing to help and has review sessions before each test. Overall a good professor but studying is necessary
She likes to miss class and let out lectures 20 minutes early. Tests are only 20 questions with there being 3 tests total for the whole class. Test questions are hard to study for and she requires you to buy an online textbook for $150 so she doesn't have to grade any homework. Extremely inconvenient and difficult to study for with online textbook.
Tests are so hard!! But Economics is hard in general. I think Wheaton just makes it harder.
Great professor. Clear and concise in her lectures. Tests can be intimidating since they are only 20 questions, but if you pay attention in class and look through the workbook supplement for the text book, you should be fine.
Knows what she is talking about, and explains it pretty well. The only thing that was difficult about the class is that the grades are basically only 3 tests, with 20 multiple choice questions. So, if you miss any, it's going to hurt you. Would definitely recommend if you have good study habits especially before tests.
Wheaton definitely knows what she's talking about although she often does get off topic. Online homework with the website Aplia is extremely difficult and is graded. There are only 3 tests each being 25% so if you perform poorly on even one there is no way to make it up. Very difficult professor with tricky tests.
Like everyone said, there are 3 tests, 20 questions multiple choice so you can't mess up. She is very passionate about her teaching and she knows what she's talking about, but you kind of either get it or you don't. Lets you out of class 20 min early every class. Very understanding so go into office hours and she'll know you're trying
Grades extremely hard. You better know the material like the back of your hand. Miss a few small details and you'll be in for a surprise when you get your test back. Lecture is very to the point. Class almost always gets out early.
3 tests, 20 questions each to judge your knowledge of Microeconomics. It is not a fair system and she gives up on students easily. If you are looking for a teacher who cares about students and will help, DO NOT TAKE HER!
She makes the class simple. 3 exams non cumulative. Classes finish early almost all time. Even the semester finishes one month before other clases. She is not afraid to say what she thinks so sometimes sounds mean but she is not. I recommend her class.
Her difficulty level is very over rated. If you go to class, pay attention and take notes you get a B. No calculations on her tests, just know the material conceptually. She really prepares you for more difficult work in the future and you will succeed if you study the class study guide. I would take her again in a heart beat.
Economics is economics so if it is difficult for you, it won't magically become easy with any professor. That said, Wheaton makes clear what you need to know, gives pretty well organized notes, and is very willing to help outside of class. Nice and funny woman who cares about students. Graded hw, but online and you can redo it until you get 100%.
Presents material quickly and efficiently, but the tests do not reflect this material. Three 20 question multiple choice tests don't make much sense for Econ, so hard to do well. Also, 8am class with only office hours starting at 7am... and deducts 0.5pt from final grade for each class missed.
Very straightforward. Test questions are mainly theory based not many definitions.
Had her for Micro and am taking her again for Macro. If you show up to class, pay attention, and study you'll be fine. You get let out of her class early all the time. The only thing that is intimidating are her 3, 20-question multiple choice tests, but they are all theory based, no calculations. She's a great teacher definitely take her if you can
Professor Wheaton has a "no-nonsense" approach to teaching that clearly puts the fate of her students' grades in their own hands. I found Mind Tap and the Study Guide's review questions to be particularly helpful in seeing the big picture of the material which is a "must" if you hope to do well on her tests.
Wheaton is a great professor. She is very fair with curving on tests, and if you do the mindtaps and study for the tests, you will get an A. When studying for your tests, STUDY LECTURE NOTES. Only what she covers in class is on the test- so don't rely too much on the book.
AWESOME teacher. Only gives you info you need to know. Great at using real-life examples to explain complexabstract econ. concepts. She lets you go early if done w all material for that day. Super helpful if you go to office hrs. Downside: tests are only 20 Qs MC so you can't afford to mess up. Practice probs in recommended wrkbk RLY help b4 test
Wheaton is a good, clear professor, but she only gives 3 tests worth 25% of your grade that are only 20 multiple choice, so each question is 5 points. She's definitely one of the best econ professors, but don't expect it to be easy by any means!
Wheaton is amazing. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. This class was work, but not impossible. Three tests, all short answer, and one group projectpresentation at the end of the semester. Do not plan on skipping, though-the lectures are essential to making good grades on the test.
Wheaton is literally the devil reincarnated as an economics professor. She began class by saying "I am the teacher that keeps most students from getting in to the business school" like that fact made her proud. She has three twenty question multiple choice exams that include no math, so it is only logic. She does not curve and does not help.
Professor Wheaton's expectations are made clear, and her no-nonsense approach is easy to follow. The exams, although multiple choice, require a broad understanding of the material if you hope to do well on them. Purchase of the Study Guide is recommended.
I took Wheaton for Micro and Macro and I don't regret it at all. She is an amazing teacher and knows what she's talking about. That being said, her Macro class was very tough and required a lot of studying to get good grades. Like her Micro class, there is 3, 20-Q tests. Go to class and listen and take good notes and you'll get at least a B
Wheaton is a great professor but this class is not easy. Your grade is based on 3, 20 question tests, online homework, and participation. She gives no extra credit and her grading scale is very clear cut. If you like econ you'll love her, she is very passionate and knows her stuff. If you aren't interested in econ, find a different professor.
Best teacher for 1311 and 1312
Really enjoyed this course. 3 tests, first one is the hardest and the other two are pretty simple. Project at the end isn't too bad either. Plus you're basically done a month early if you have an early presentation date. Clear, easy to take notes, not trying to trick you. Wish I had taken her for intro and not waited so long...
Dr. Wheaton is a passionate teacher and clearly cares about her students. Her lectures are to the point, and gives you exactly the information you need to know. 20 question tests with an optional review day. She has a strict no-nonsense policy, gives extra credit, is available to provide extra help, and is clearly knowledgeable in her profession.
Tests are multiple choice and are only a few questions so if you miss one, you're in trouble. She is also not very forgiving when it comes to grade flexibility.
Dr. Wheaton is special. She is very helpful, and has a "You'll master my class or die trying." attitude. Mandatory Attendance, but she won't bug you if you're gone; attend class though. I didn't read a single word in the book, just went to lectures and did homework. With extra study, would have aced because she's a great lecturer. All HW online.
Dr. Wheaton is a really great professor and knows her stuff. Attendance is mandatory as all of her test questions come from her lectures. But she writes all of the notes on the white board as she talks, so if you listen, copy the notes, and STUDY those notes, you'll be just fine. You don't need the textbook, but GET THE STUDY GUIDE FOR IT!!
Great professor. Hard class but if you study and use her suggested study guide booklet you will do well.
Professor Wheaton is awesome. During class she's to the point and clear. Get out of class early a lot. If you're slow on econ it's a good idea to read the chapter before class and fill out the study guide. She is sometimes a bit snappy, but overall nice. Tests are 20 mc and conceptual, first test all micro-. She's not an easy A, but it's worth it.
Dr. Wheaton is a wonderful teacher! I felt like I understood everything she said after I reviewed it after class or completed MindTap. However, do not expect to fly by without studying for the tests because the 3 of them are just 20 multiple choice questions. The questions are not just simple definitions(typical MC), they ask about complex concepts
Dr. Wheaton is a great professor. She does not make the material harder than it has to be, and she explains what you need to know to understand the topic, no more, no less. For her upper level classes the tests are short answer / draw graphs and changes. #1 Key to pass is showing up, take notes, study those.
Draws graphs to explain material so you UNDERSTAND and make connections (and can reason through problems without having to memorize terms). 3x20-question mult choice exams aren't very difficult if you come to class, take good notes, and do HW, but they can hurt you if you don't pay attention. Treats students with respect, uses many examples, clear.
Dr. Wheaton is a great professor. Her course outline (ECO 1311, at least) is clear cut and well-calibrated for an intro class. She lectures quickly and efficiently, which leads to shorter-than-scheduled classes. She makes herself available outside of class to help students grasp the subject. Finally, she really cares about her students.
Professor Wheaton is not the easiest professor, but you will learn the material very well compared to other Econ professors at SMU. I'm very glad she was recommended to me, and I would gladly take her classes again
Professor Wheaton is a really good teacher. If you go to class and take notes and do the homework. You will have an A very easily. All her test will be based on the material she covered in class. It is a very good intro class for learning Econ.
Shes alright
Very good teacher, hard class. Grade consists of online homework, attendance, and 3 tests (1 of them is the final). Also, each test only has 20 multiple choice questions. She drops your lowest 2 online homework grades. Only extra credit is the Core exam at the end of the semester which is worth 5 points on final.
Dr. Wheaton is a very clear-cut professor. Her grading criteria are explained on the first day. We had two tests and a final. The homework is Mindtap and it counts for 20 percent. There is barely any homework. Maybe one homework assignment a week max. However, her tests and the final are only 20 questions. There is no extra credit.
Dr. Wheaton's class is not esay to get A. You will have 3 tests in total, and each one of them is 25 percent of your grde. There's no curve on the tests or the overall grade. No calculations on the exam. Only Definition, but can kill you.
Had her for Micro last semester and it was way easier, but this semester is so tough. She only gives two tests and a final (each 20 questions multiple choice for 75% of your grade) and MindTap and attendance for the other 20%.
2 test and final for 75% of your grade. The best professor I have had here but also the hardest. Not an easy A because tests are only 20 questions and are conceptional. She gave us extra credit opportunity for 10 bonus points on final and curved you up a letter grade if you were within 1% of the next grade.
Attendance matters and she is very strict
Wheaton's macro class is very difficult. I heard that she was a good micro teacher but macro ended up being the toughest class I've taken at SMU. Tests are what you're mainly graded on, and they're all about applications and understanding the subject forwards and backwards. The questions are tricky and you have to innately understand to do well.
it's said that she teaches so well but that's not the case! took econ 1312 and it was INCREDIBLY hard. if you aren't really familiar with economic theory and need some caring teachers to guide you through, don't take her class. she basically just wrote her outline on the whiteboard and whether you understand it or not was none of her business.
She's a good professor! She is clear, understandable, and easy to follow. Her classes are lecture, homework, and book heavy. As long as you take decent notes or follow along in class and read the textbook you'll be fine. She has two tests and a final but its not cumulative. Each one is 20 MC questions and you have online hw worth 20% of the grade.
Love her! She's super clear and lectures are engaging. Tests are kind of hard and there's only 2 of them and only 20 MC, but if you study hard and understand the material you'll be fine. Homework isn't bad and she offers extra credit for the final which helps a lot. Not an easy A but she's a great professor and if you put in effort you'll do well!
she makes macro hard, but still manageable. The content was challenging at times but what really bothered me was her outlook. She doesn't care for students and talks to you like you're stupid (even though she says she tries not to do this). If you're someone that needs help with econ throughout the semester, take another professor.
Worst professor at SMU. First of all, if you miss more than 2 classes, she takes points off of your final semester grade. Out of over 100 students, only one person got a 100 on her 20 question MC exam. You have 3 tests. you can only miss 6 questions in all to get an A-. Forget about office hours, they're at 7am. HW is NOTHING like the tests.
The tests are hard, only 20 questions, and multiple choice. She gives two extra credit opportunities, so make sure to take them. She is a great teacher and explains the difficult content very well. If you are engaged in class and study, the class is very manageable. I would suggest giving yourself a couple days to study before each test.
Dr. Wheaton is strict but fair. I needed her to set me straight this semester, and I'm grateful she did. Tight on attendance and classroom conduct. But as a humanitarian herself, she has a big heart and only wants the best for her students. Very organized and clear lectures. Would definitely recommend. Put in the work and you will make an A.
She wrote the textbook on this class, economics of human rights. I took a tally on questions she could answer and questions she didnt have the answer to. and she so far is 7/58. She knows the surface level on the subjects she teaches but nothing in depth. She teaches definitions and simple graphs.
I took her for Macro and hated it. There are few grades in the class. The exams are only 20 questions so you have to know your stuff. However, she makes her exams way too hard. The questions are problems she had never gone over in class and just expected you to know. Almost everyone got a C or below on her final which hurt everyone's grades.
She's tough, but a really good teacher. Not a lot of homework. Says she doesn't give extra credit but gave students a lot of chances for it. You have 3 tests that are all weighted the same (including final) and they're based on applying micro to real life. Come to class, study for more than one day before the test, and score high on the online hw.
Professor Wheaton is a great lecturer and makes concepts seem easy in class, but her tests are entirely application based and there is no good way to study for them. Your grade is based off of three equally weighted exams which are 20 questions each, but she gives lots of opportunities for extra credit so it's quite possible to do well.
Hard class.
Tests are harder than other professors, but Wheaton is the best Econ professor I have had. She really cares about her students. There are extra credit opportunities and you will do well if you prepare. Take her if you can.
A difficult professor, but definitely cares about the students. You get what you put in this class. Take her if you can.
Wheaton has a rough approach to teaching, sink or swim. Not an easy A because tests are only 20 questions and are conceptional. Maybe one homework assignment a week max so nothing to pull your grade up if you don't do well. And NO extra credit. Buyer be ware.
Not very nice when you ask questions, or simply talk to her. She doesn't know the answers to her own test questions. Only take if you want to have anxiety all semester.
Attendance was not mandatory due to COVID but I highly recommend attending or watching all of the lectures because it is a lot to take in. Your grade is determined by 2 tests, the homework grades combined, and the final. She gave us an extra credit opportunity for 10 points. Tests are 20 questions and multiple choice. A blessing and a curse.
She's a fine teacher, just know the tests are impossible. I would look for a different teacher if your only goal is to get an A for Cox. If you actually care about econ could be a good fit then.
Strict but fair. Her class isnt easy by any means but its definitely possible to get an A if you work hard. She gives extra credit occasionally but doesnt drop your lowest test grade. Her availability outside of office hours doesnt exist, so be aware of that. If you work hard, you'll learn the most from her class, but not the easy-A prof.
Wheaton really cares about her students and them truly understanding micro. The material is difficult but make sure to keep up with MindTap and go to her for help and you'll be good.
She seems really rude at first but I do think she really cares about her students. The thing that makes her class so hard is that your whole grade is calculated from two exams and a final so if you don't do well on one, you get a bad grade in the class. There are extra credit opportunities though.
She averages homework ATTEMPTS grades so be prepared to chegg everything. Her test questions lack clarity so they're hard to even understand what they're asking. She doesn't curve and theres only 2 midterms. If you do worse than a 70 on the first exam, drop the class. She's a good teacher but her grading method makes that reflection impossible.
The class is mostly based on tests and a large group project. The tests are very difficult and to do well you need to know more than what is taught in the lectures. The tests consist of graphing and short answers but don't expect to get the graphing questions right if you don't read the textbook.
This class is easy as long as you read the text book, thats all you need. The math is all basic plug into equations, and there are some simple graphs to learn. I hardly did lectures and mostly just read the text book and I ended up with an A and definitely learned a lot.
The worst professor at the SMU economics department. Do yourself a favor and avoid her.
I love her! She gives an opportunity for extra credit and she's willing to open assignments if a lot of people missed them. Her lectures are simplified enough to understand and the work load is very manageable. Her class is known to be more difficult than the others, but I truly learned good concepts and seen how useful Econ is for business.
Attendance mandatory. One homework assignment a week, takes about an hour. Lectures are simple, she does not over-complicate. 3 tests worth 75% of your grade with each having 20 questions. Each question is worth more than a point of final grade. That part was super frustrating, but everything else was fine. Very nice and answers questions well.
Nice woman, but she is not a very good teacher and her tests are super difficult. She gives 3, 20 multiple chose question tests that are 75% of your grade. Sounds easy but they are broad and are nothing like the things that she teaches. If you have already taken Econ or are good at teaching yourself go ahed and take it, but if not DONT TAKE HER.
Dr. Wheaton was the hardest professor I had last semester. Her class was based off of 3 tests (including the final) and ridiculously difficult online textbook that had absolutely nothing to do with her lectures. Her lectures were very good & I felt like I understood it as she was teaching it, but it didnt help me since the hw & test didnt relate
Wheaton lecutres most the class but it isn't necessarily boring. She only writes on the board what you need to write for notes, but sometimes it isn't enough. Would recommend reading the actual text on mindtap since some of the questions on tests are a bit of a reach from the notes. Especially the last one.
The workload for this class is very manageable, 1 or 2 mind tap a week and its all on Chegg. There are two tests and a final which is nice if you do well but could also definitely hurt you. The test questions were based off the lectures and didn't find them too bad.
If you have the opportunity to take a class w/ her, DO IT!!! I have never met someone smarter than Dr. Wheaton. She wrote her own textbook and pioneered economic models. She does extensive research on human trafficking too. She is so nice and passionate too. Her lectures are super clear and concise. No doubt abt her expectations. Best prof I've had
Dr. Wheaton is incredible. I took her for micro and didn't love it because of the structure of the exams, but her more advanced classes are wonderful. She is incredibly knowledgeable and caring, and her lectures are very clear and organized. If you can take her, do it!!! She is great in office hours as well. 10/10 recommend
One of the best classes at SMU, especially for econ. TAKE DR. WHEATON!!! She truly cares about her students and the material, which she practically pioneered the models. You have to pay attention to lectures, but if you do, the work you have to do out of class isn't bad. There is one group project over the semester. 100% would recommend to anyone.
great professor. she was kinda hard on us at the beginning of the school year but she opened us and am very understanding of anything. take her
Dr. Wheaton is very smart and very approachable. She is very understanding and wants to see you succeed. You need to apply yourself to succeed in the class as A's are not free. Great option for 1311
Dr. Wheaton is an amazing and funny professor. She is very caring, and my 8 am MWF section ended 10-20 minutes early. Attendance is mandatory, and there are up to two absences. Her exams are straightforward 20 MCQs that have a very high impact on your grade (1.05% per question). For her exams, just make study sheets based on her notes.
Dr. Wheaton genuinely cares about her students. Her class is lectures style with handwritten notes. Textbook is not optional for 1311 because Mindtap access is required for homework. Weekly homework assignments but do not take more than half an hour. I would absolutely take her again! She can come across as intimidating but she wants to help you.
loved loved loved her. get to know her and she will help you out. lecture aren't terrible and exams were pretty easy. homework sucks but is all on chegg or quizlet. wonderful lady who cares about her students as long as they respect her
Dr. Wheaton's ECO of Human Rights class is hands down the best course I have taken at SMU. Her class is designed to apply basic economic concepts to real world topics - it's great because she shows you how much more you know about econ than you think. Clear and rigid grading process and attendance is mandatory; go to class and you will do well.
She's so caring and kind to her students! All she does is lecture but she covers quite literally everything you need to know for tests. The whole grade comes from test which if you pay attention & attend class everyday the tests won't be hard. MindTap can be annoying since some of it isnt on the test but it helps with critical thinking. Take her
Professor Wheaton is by far the most incredible and impressionable professor I have had at SMU. She is the most qualified individual in the economics department, and the best economics professor I have ever had. Her course is not ~easy~ but is VERY interesting and her exams are directly related to what is taught in class (no surprises!). Take her!
Best economics teacher out of them all at SMU. Her lectures typically end 10-20 before they are supposed to so you always get out of class early. If you do the homework, you barely need to study for exams. The best part about it is her exams are all multiple choice questions.
She's somewhat strict in grading exams and projects, but she cares about the material and her lectures, even if a lot of it comes from her own textbook. Attendance is mandatory, but take good notes and you should be fine on the HWs and exams. Work well with your group for the research project throughout the semester and you should do good on it.
mindtap homework every wednesday, not too bad but makes you think. 3 20 questions tests which are relatively easy. lots of lecture, kind of boring but covers everything you need. good person, cares about students. her personality is a bit of an adjustment, but you will love her as the semester progresses. she's ambitious and wants the best for you.
Avoid. It is impossible to keep up with the work, she is not helpful at all and you won't get proper feedback so you don't get to correct your mistakes, the reason i am not a major now, and she couldn't care less, just go away is her attitude. Outright ugly when we ask for topic clarification, refuses to help, is not available in office or email.
Quite honestly a terrible professor. Not a good choice if you want an A to fulfill a requirement. Extremely long/difficult tests and vague grading. Don't recommend going to the lectures, since it won't benefit you on exams. She also comes off with an attitude if you ask any questions she thinks you should already know.
Worst class experience money can buy. I seriously think this woman is a know it all but wrong and I disproved her on a handful of occasions by doing a simple google search. Not a good teacher, enjoys watching us suffer, does not care at all about our grades or how her inability to teach will affect our outcomes. Very opinionated, rude. Avoid.
Incredibly rude person and harsh grader. She's rigid with her wordviews and constantly pushes her agenda rather than teach the material. Doesnt listen to other views and is condescending Good luck learning anything in this course much less getting a good grade in what is nothing more than a cc and should be a smooth easy credit
I like everything about Elizabeth, but the 'averaged' setting on the mindmap homework needs to go.
nothing about this woman is okay, her teaching needs to be more precise about material needed for the exams and her questions need to be applicable. you spend your entire time studying what she teaches only to get a low grade because nothing she lectures on matters. i regret taking her deeply, weird personality too
Took her for two semesters and absolutely loved her classes. She takes extremely detailed notes and explains things clearly. Class is based on tests which are 20 MCQs, so very straightforward. As long you look over your notes you're almost guaranteed to pass. Great class and professor!
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!! Worst of the worst. She is the only teacher who seemed even remotely doable for this sequence and I thought I got lucky but i was wrong, she is just as bad as the others. Her grading is subjective. Even if you get the right answer, you will get a B maximum. I am an A student and this is going to ruin my GPA.
A terrible professor fr
Did not like, strange personality and needs to keep her religion to herself.
please IGNORE all of these awful reviews, people who say these are the ones who don't pay attention to class and are biased for no reason. the class is so straightforward. whatever is in lecture, its on the test and theres only 3 tests and HW due every week. i love her so much i wish i could take her again she really cares for your wellbeing!
Shes just not a good teacher and her tests are very hard with each question hurting your overall score trememdously. She is religious and we shouldn't even know that but she does in fact bring it into the classroom. She can be rough and condescending when people ask questions so I would never take her again.
Wheaton wants you to fail. Her grading critiques are trick questions and at most and you will still get a terrible grade. She seems to not understand the meaning of an introduction level course and I am beyond disappointed in SMU and her. She needs to be fired. She is rude& disrespectful & you will never want to take an econ class again
Her demeanor is offputting and her religion is irrelevant, but I wish she would stop refering to her god in conversations, its just uncomfortable. She makes you come to class but doesn't test you on what is being taught in class so it is hopelessly pointless.
Lectures are all over the place, a lot of ranting and repetitive. Went to office hours to get feedback but at the end its useless.
Dont take this professor. This was the worst experience of my life. Absolutely everything is excessive. Take literally anything but this professor for your credit, she's horrible as a teacher and doesn't know how to teach.
The bad reviews are from individuals who lack awareness of differences and unique styles, they want everything handed to them. She is not rude, she is FRANK. 4 tests and not a lot of hw, everything is off the lectures so not sure what more someone wants. her style is engaging with students with questions, its not weird she just cares
Professor is a waste of time. Doesn't cover material on syllabus, then tests on it. Dismissive of student concerns, blames failures on lack of effort. Don't bother enrolling.
Dont take this professor. Makes everything WAAY HARDER than it needs to be. This was the worst experience of my life. Absolutely everything is excessive. Take literally anything but this professor. a woman who rolls his eyes when you ask questions!!
DO NOT TAKE, class is so boring you will want to sleep. Dont ask any questions if you are confused. She loves to publicly embarrass students, she is extremely rude, and has no filter. Her teaching is all over the place and don't expect an A even if you usually do very well.
A weirdo fr fr forced you to attend and take hand notes, exams are your whole grade no mercy, and she's personally off putting with no sense of propriety and isn't nice at all. Rude and demeaning likes to put student on the spot to embarrass.
Look at all the econ professor reviews, they all have horrible reviews as well so what are you gonna do? don't know why she gets a bad rep, these reviews are from people who don't want to work at all. all the exams are from the lecture so just show up, take notes, do homework and you'll get an A. It's not that deep. It's not that hard.
Not great teacher, talks a lot, having no technology at this point is absurd, tells you about her accomplishments too often. She absolutely lacks any real personality other than being weird and confrontation toward students. Shouldn't be talking ab her religion either.
Got called out for having various tabs open the one time we were allowed to use computers. Very controlling of her class and assigns unnecessary work. Do NOT take her.
Her test questions are VERY unclear and you don't even know what she is asking for so they're hard to understand and complete even though there are not that many. She doesn't curve so even if the whole class does terribly, you do terribly, and there is no extra credit which is ridiculous. Every class I had here has some type of extra credit.
Knew I wanted to drop this so bad and didn't listen to my gut, she doesn't know what she's doing and is argumentative. She should pray for better teaching skills. No technology which is ridiculous in this century.
She does not curve tests. Her exams basically make up your entire grade. Her homework is awful, the grading policy is an average of your 3 best attempts. Her test questions are very vague which means there could be multpile right awnsers, which makes tests hard because she does not know how to word a question. I would not reccomend her to anyone.
She is not accommodating and she's just not a kind person. Horrible teacher who forces forced distributions on her grades so that it is almost ensured you don't get an A. The school is deflating grades and she is weaponizing this.
The people leaving bad reviews are probably people who did not like her no computer policy and people that didn't take notes and try. She is incredibly straightforward with her notes which directly translates to the test. I believe if you take notes in this class and understand, then you will get a good grade.
dont take her. she loves to embarass students who answer questions and is so passive aggressive. homework is based off mindtap (she takes your average of 3 attempts instead of your best score) and 3 exams (which she never curves). horrible teacher and tells you to see a tutor if u dont get it. if u take her, expect to end up with a c+ or b at best.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. She struggles to teach, and her grading makes no sense. You will never get an A even on a homework assignment. Attendance is mandatory and she is very passive aggressive. Does not respond to emails either. Avoid at all costs. Contemplating going to department head.
This class I felt was simple and very clear on what was expected. she isn't bad teacher she was understandable and direct. If you think you can ask her for grade boost and sweet talk talk then you're wrong. But she gives opportunities to get a better grade. I like that the work is on you and if you study a little and pay attention you'll be fine.
Will absolutely fail you, no mercy and senselessly. A joke of a professor, hateful, rude, impossible to please, and an elitist. Literally looks down on you when you don't know something. Rudest pos I've met.
Worst lecturer I've experienced. Disrespectful in tone and facial expressions towards us, will not answer questions on material but will respond with more questions like she's being coy. Rude, belittling and this is despite her saying she KNOWS most of us are just here for the quant credit. Weird attitude and teaching too.
def has a weird lecturing style and can be v rude, not a good course but prob the best option to take it with
Good professor. If you need economics further along in your major take Wheaton! She really helps you understand and learn the concepts. However, if you only need this as a curriculum requirement there are easier teachers. Your overall grade is made up of two homework assignments due every week, attendance, and four tests.
Overall good professor. Grades off of two hw assignments a week, three tests, and attendance. She will occasionally curve her tests which are 20 multiple choice questions. If you study and work hard for the class you will be able to get a high grade. Not the easiest professor but you do learn a lot.
Tests are impossible and she has such a weird specific way of teaching that if it isn't your thing, you'll do horrible. Personality is odd and archaic and honestly she talks more about her accomplishments than anything else. Grades hard and especially if she thinks you're not smart which is if you ask her too many questions. Be careful of that.
lecture heavy understanding but not good at explaining in depth . test weren't hard but was difficult
Impossible becuase she teaching things one way then tests in another direction so you can't study for her exams, also very disorganized and boring with lecture all day every day when we need to have more hands on activities. She is not at all open to suggestions either, pretends to be than continues doing what she so.
Really not an impossible class. Maybe she became a fairer grader after the bad reviews on this site. But she is very strict about the little things, so be prepared for that if you take her course.
I find her lectures to be wordy and hard to follow. Along with this, she assigned about a lto of reading that she never addresses and then is hard to follow in class with her outdated policies that allow no tech (which is unfair to those of us with disabilities).
I do not like her teaching style. It is weird and she is too old school with her strange habits and weird mannerism and rules. Tests are really hard and different than what she covers.
Horrible. Took her last semester; while I don't like the way she taught (rambles off about her personal life a LOT), I don't think the class was hard. HOWEVER; her rudeness is unmatched, and has some absurd rules (no bathroom breaks & no technology unless DASS accommodated). She is very easy to get agitated and ugly about minor questions. Not fun.
Talks about personal life way too much and doesn't care who's behind in class. Instead of going in depth she talks about her personal ventures. beware
Flat out just avoid this professor. Pointless readings with random specific questions. Is really weird in her teaching style and personal demeanor where she feels it is necessary to discuss at length her personal like that we're not there for nor do our dollars contribute to her proselytizing and glorification of self and accomplishments.
The worst professor I've ever had at Southern Methodist University (as a senior). She gives exams on material that wasn't covered in class. If you're thinking about missing class, your final grade will be dropped by one point after just two absences. She also doesn't allow note-taking on devices, which feels outdated in this day and age.
She does curve the tests, however, it's because she has to. People don't do good in her class because she doesn't go in depth with the material. She also gives homework on mindtap, which includes stuff we don't even review in class.
dont even bother reading the reviews, simply do not take her.
Absolutely no sense to not have technology in the classroom at this point in history, banning it will not help and in fact hinders as I can't pay attention to her awful lectures without something to doodle with, this women needs to put a fork it in as her techniques are meant for the 1900s and even then i doubt htey were effective. Impossible tests
I took this class as a freshman and often found myself embarrassed by the professor. I received nothing above a B with terrible feedback and no help. The professor made me feel completely unqualified to be in the class as an Economics major. Very rude & inconsiderate, discouraging rather than encouraging and now I am no longer an Economics major.
Do not take her. She is waaayyy too date in her technique and she doesn't even look thaaat old. No tech, tests are impossible, her lecture make no sense, and you cannot stay awake in class. SMU needs to retire these types and fast. Not gong to become a donor alum until they do.
Great person, decent teacher. She really is caring for her students, making she were safe and well. She comes up with fun examples. A bit monotone, and just don't get on her bad side.
She gives homework on things she does not teach in class but she dismisses class 15 minutes early. You can be a genius in your field, but if your class is 1 hour long and you dismiss us 15 minutes earlier when you could be teaching us things we actually need to know for our homework, you're wasting my money (93k/ year btw).
I liked her & want her for 1312. Class was slightly hard but lectures were engaging. Homework strayed away from lectures, but info was easy to find. Exams were created by her & strictly based on lectures. Didn't allowed typed notes but was fine with using iPads to write. She is very by the book and doesn't accept excuses. Seemed reasonable to me.
Her policies are ridiculous and you can't take notes on a laptop. Her lectures don't cover the homework. Her tests are impossible and she is soo boring ahl. Older lady with older methods that need to be updated.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! Transfer out if you can she does not drop any tests you do not get a cheat it is so unfair in comparison to other classes and she will not go over any material she explained in class which is ridiculous so just stay away.
Not very personal, won't know your name by the end of the semester; HOWEVER, she is by far the BEST teacher I have ever had teach on this subject. Uses real world examples for everything that makes it really easy to understand. Attendance is very strict, but I promise you it's worth going to every class.
I actually enjoyed Professor Wheaton in this class. I honestly thought I would get a higher grade, but she did curve all exams making everyone at least pass. She's a really nice women but sometimes she can have somewhat of a cold front. Not really helpful outside class so if you're struggling look for a tutor.
Any positive comments about this woman is sarcasm cause she is the rosy around. She's rude and condescends, refuses to respond to questions directly, seems to hate students and would rather be researching. Stay away. You'll thank me later.
