Why do you think they lowered the A by 5%

If science were as precise as she explains it why do people still die?

think she's bad in 393, wait until you get her in the higher level bcem courses
I don't know why this person is still teaching...
Boooo! she will kill your GPA
Her lectures and her exams are nothing alike. She expects too much from a course that is designed for those NOT continuing in bcem.
The only reason she even has a job here is because of her husband. Go find your own job, lady!
Sure she sounds all enthusiastic and helpful in class... but try going to her office to get extra help and she'll bite your head clear off! Mean mean bitter lady.
Very helpful prof! Cares immensely about her students, shows especially in 1 on 1 contact!
Dr. L-V is doin a great job during this semester.. keep it up (note: no pictures with horns on here!) =)
i dont know what you guys are talking about...if you think she is bad you have NO IDEA. lohmier-vogel is amazing! so far this semester she has been very clear and helpful. i agree with the person below..shes not the evil one!
You wouldn't have to go to lecture at all if the notes were filled in. Just stay home and memorize every single enzyme, cofactor, and pathway in the notes and the readings, since they WILL be tested.
She is a good prof who tries to make things relavent to students. Her tests were detailed, but no more so than the notes. If you can't handle this prof, you shouldn't be in science
test Q's a little ambiguous, but if you studied for her exams it was ok. Straight memorization!
She does a good job of teaching, works in neat facts and real world applications of the stuff you are learning. A very nice and helpful lady, as long as you are not just going to see her to whine about your marks. Really wants to help students learn.
GUESS WHAT LADY, NOBODY LEARNS ANYTHING BY MEMORIZING EVERY PAGE OF THE NOTES. Real education involves application, not regurgitation. And stop looking so smug when Dr. Zaremburg screws up, it's not going to make us like you more.
Cut the lady some slack. This was her first year teaching the course so she wasn't clear on how to test her students. True her test could have had more application but I don't think you could have answered her Q's if you just memorized and didn't understand. But LV: I would lay off the sweden references..bit much.
If you talk with her in person, you will easily find her lack of math, logic and ethics which is fatal to teach any science.
Ugh. NOT a fun class. The students weren't into it and neither was she - it was obvious. And completely unreasonable when it came to moving exams due to scheduling conflicts with other courses or varsity athletic events. If there is another section with another prof, opt out of her class.
FIRST DAY of class she told us she did not know the structures of the amino acids, and made a joke of it. She and the TA laughed at us during the exam, and said to a student behind me "why would you ASK that?" when he put up his hand in an exam. Oh, and wipe that smug look off your face when you give exams back and tell us the average was 50%.
she is one of the wors profs that i have ever had, and i've been in school for 6 years (changed my major). her lectures were disorganized, and had no theme. worse, she would regularly stop, and say 'oh i think that is wrong' and continue anyways. once she actually looked at the board and said, 'what am i talking about here?'
Awful awful awful, stay out of this class or make sure someone else is teaching all or most of it. not only horrible prof but horrible personality too. when i went to go see her for advice on studying for the next test she actually said maybe i have a learning disability. totally inappropriate!
HORRIBLE prof and person! She expected you to know every single detail and she didn't even know half of the material herself! When students would correct her horrendous errors she would snap rude and sarcastic comments at them! She shouldn't be allowed to teach!
Very very hard course. Holy crap...she laughed during the midterm.
This prof is the worst. Her exams were not relevant at all. Someone who is as worst as her is Dr. Van der hoorn from bcem 537

She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. It's not the course material that sucks, it's her.
Her exams tested a lot trivial details and would often not even touch upon topics she would spend a couple of lectures on. Memorize everything; nothing in the notes is there for interest sake. If you memorize her notes, her questions are not difficult to answer, so long as you can decipher what it is she is asking for(the real crux of her exams!)
Well, this was an interesting semester with her. First off, you CAN do well on her exams (I have A's on both), but you most definitely need to memorize every LITTLE thing in lectures, and no we're not kidding. Dont bother memorzing pentose pathway, she won't test it. Instead she likes to test little things in small font.so get out those glasses!

She actually does a pretty good job lecturing. The course material is definitely challenging. What makes it more challenging is the fact that her tests will give you nightmares and make you vomit. Memorize word for word every single detail in the course.
Ok, first off, I don't think majority of the posters realize that their taking a bcem course. "OMG SHE EXPECTS US TO KNOW HER NOTES LOL!" yeah no kidding dip sticks. Shes not only very good at lecturing, her tests are FROM HER NOTES. Shes not as evil as people say she is. Even go to her office hours, a very nice person. Just read her notes...
Very difficult class. Tests are mostly application... I have never done so poorly in a class ever and seen so many people withdraw. Good luck!
Worse prof ever, I could not understand why this lady is teaching. Who is at her back! she is so rude. She makes tons of mistakes, blame them all to Mac! I think she should be kicked out of university because She told my friend you have learning disabilites. Nasty lady, with Dr.B-Ng two play perfect games "politics"! Who they don't like F or D+.
BCEM443 is an extremely difficult course, but I don't agree with the posters who say that Dr. L-V is the Devil incarnate and the reason why the course is so bad. Teaching BCEM is an absolutely thankless job, considering that most students transfer their resentment of the material to the professor. With that said, I agree with those who say that the
Hard ass class. Memorize the tables with very small numbers and I would not recommend anyone to take this course. By far the worst teacher I've ever had.
I'm not sure if Vogel actually cares about her students or if she just pretends too. Her notes are very disorganized and have no flow. She has trouble getting across what she wants, especially on tests. The written questions were a guess at what she wanted to know. She was also smug about telling us that the average last year was 40%.
Terrible, terrible professor. Her tests are like Trivial Pursuit: BCEM Version. Some of her questions depends on your reading her mind instead of your knowledge. Will never admit fault (hint: when the entire class is asking for clarification on a question, the problem isn't the class). Very prone to errors as well.
Dr. Lohmeier-Vogel is not the devil incarnate, nor is she out to get students: Attention retards bcem is not easy, accept it. She is a good prof and does not diserve the diss.
Not evil, just doesn't seem to understand teaching, ie: a good question would be "how does PCR work" or "why do we use PCR". A bad question (the kind you get on exams), is "what concentration of nucleotides do you use in PCR". Guess what, memorizing little details is far less important than understanding the big picture.
I was terrified of Lohmeier-Vogel before taking her class, but seriously guys, she's not that bad. Her exams are tougher because they make you think and apply what you learned. She does a great job of preparing students to trouble-shoot and actually succeed in industry, which, uh, is the whole point of school.
I'm sure Dr. Vogel wrote that last comment herself. This woman takes no pride in her work at all. Her lectures are full of mistakes, her questions are borderline incomprehensible, and she flies through difficult concepts. Biochemistry is really interesting but her teaching abilities are abysmal. I wonder how she still has a job.
Thought she was fantastic. Grading scale is beyond fair. Tests were BRUTAL - you really needed to know what you're talking about (kindda expected from a 400 level course though). It's not a walk in the park, but she gives you the tools to succeed - definitely requires effort to do good. I worked my ass off and ended up with an A-, so it?s doable
She is a very straight forward prof. The only problem with her is that she knows her material too much thus has put higher expectations for the students. She does not like to review previous concept, not even breezing through them, so you gotta know your material very well to understand what she is talking about. Exams were super hard. she is ok.
For someone teaching for a very long time, she doesn't do a very good job. I know this for a fact.
She really is a wonderful woman if you get to know her outside of class. This class IS HARD and she knows it. The material itself is massive, so make sure to review it a lot and ask her if you have problems.
I enjoyed BCEM 393 and was excited for 443. Got there and now my world is turned upside down. This class is hard and she knows it. "since there was a tutorial, im not having any more office hrs and no email" seriously? seems like she doesnt really care. loads of memory work (which is pretty much wat the exams were) ie. didnt learn very much
You claim you put in 200 hours of overtime and still managed to have horrible lecture notes- full of mistakes. Be ready to memorize, memorize and memorize some more.
This is a difficult course but she did her best to make it as easy as possible. She would come up to students after class to offer help, and was committed to our success. It required large amounts of work throughout the semester, not only at exam-time, but if you put in the effort you will come out fine. The complaints are overexaggerated.
as a person (if you get to know her out of class) she's nice...quite friendly. but as a Prof...she doesn't know how to handle the course. get prepared to work extreeeemely hard. memorize every word of your notes. to me her testing style was unfair and totally useless b/c i wont be remembering anything...so avoid the course if you can!
This is no walk in the park. It's a course that tries to cover all the BCEM related pre-med stuff in one semester. None of it is hard per se, but you really have to know every single scribble in your notes, because her tests want details more than concepts. It's made all the more worse because she routinely made 2-3 mistakes per lecture. Beware!
This course is definitely not an easy one; there are tons pathways to memorize that you are likely to forget two days after the exam. She is not a natural born lecturer to say the least, easily gets flustered, but she is a nice lady. Approachable, visit her office hours; despite what it seems like, she does care for the success of her students.
If you can memorize useless facts and regurgitate whole slides, you are set. Likes to ask about things mentioned once in passing. She is actually a good lecturer and is funny. Not nearly as bad as anyone made it or her out to be. Tries to make lectures medically-relevant for student's interest. Easy to get an A if you put in the time.
Horrible professor, has been teaching the same class for 10 years and constantly makes mistakes on the slides. Her tests are unfair and lots of marks go to things that she talked about once for 30seconds and that was on one slide. memorize every slide.
The course is not hard, just very time consuming. Make sure you're taking 3 courses that semester and be ready to memorize irrelevant facts. She has a habit of making the students feel dumb. I particularly enjoyed the email after the final grades telling us how she fails to understand why the class average was so low because 3 students did well.
I had high hopes going into this course. Transferring into the University of Calgary, I had decided BCEM was going to be my major. This professor does nothing but disappoint. Between her and Fraser, the BCEM department leaves much to be desired. Horrible teaching abilities, even mean at times. Pointless test questions, have to make assumptions
I'm not done this class yet- but just finished the first midterm. Everyone is right: the questions are COMPLETELY unfair. Instead of taking the major concepts and applying them, you end up having to regurgitate meaningless facts (some of which she specifically said "don't memorize"). She also can be incredibly condescending if you ask questions.
Haven't finished the course yet either, although it is not what I expected for a 400 level course. Obviously it's a lot of work which is to be expected for this level. However, to have to do nothing but regurgitate facts for the exams rather than apply the concepts taught is not what senior level courses have been about in my experience.
Prepare to memorize every single detail of the lecture notes. An EXTREMELY hard course, mainly because of the ridiculous amount of material crammed into it. She makes the tests much harder than they need to be, and responds rudely to emails.
Don't listen to the other comments, this is one of the best profs I've ever had: exremely caring about students as long as you care about the material. She takes time to regrade and will scale marks fairly. She has a bad rep because there's a lot of material in this class and some of it's difficult, but if you put in the effort you'll get an A.
She actually tries to help students succeed. Her lecture notes are very detailed but organization might need some improvement. Her voice is soft so sit at the front of the class. She is approachable to student questions but email responses take some time. Work hard when you have her. Tests are application and analytical focused. Labs aren't bad.
I recommend the class for its material-- lots of interesting and useful topics are covered. The prof was quite good but gives very difficult tests. This is a course where you either get it (and an A) or you don't. Prepare to memorize a boat load of pathways.
Memorize everything... that is all this course is. Very little application or usefulness. You'll likely have to re-take it and if not you'll forget everything you learned after christmas. She is NOT approachable! 5min appointments then you have to come back next office hours. Dont bother asking her about anything on BB tells you to go there
Excellent prof, very available for office hours and willing to spend hours discussing science.
A very nice woman who cares a lot for her students. But this course has way too much information, memorize every detail from her lectures. She will rescale the exam, which is nice but that wouldn't need to happen if the exam questions were fair. She is awesome but avoid this course like the plague if you can. I had nightmares over this course.
I actually found the material really interesting. Unfortunately, she had problems presenting it all in a logical/organized manner (typos in her notes don't help, either). Be sure you remember EVERYTHING (including random blobby drawings) because the exams are very specific. Willing to answer questions, though (better 1 on 1 than in lecture).
Dr. Lohmeier-Vogel is a very sweet prof, but mostly only to the students who come to see her and take their time to study the material. It is a challenging course, but very interesting. Her notes are hard to look at at first but all the material she tests is on her notes (not the textbook, I never used my textbook).
Her teaching style is to-the-point and straight forward. Make sure you attend ALL the lectures, or you'll be left stranded. Her exams consist of very specific concepts from her notes, but I found them normal in difficulty. I actually found the labs more difficult than her exams. She lowered the grade scale by 2% this year, and I received an A grade overall. I only recommend this course to those who will put in the effort.
One of the toughest university classes I've had to date just because of the sheer amount of material. LV just gets stuck with teaching it. She gets a way worse rap than she deserves as she lets everybody know what she expects. The only part of the course I really disliked were the labs. Thankfully they aren't every week. Work and you'll be fine.
An excellent instructor, and makes concepts crystal clear. There were very few moments where she was unclear in lecture. Despite my uninterest in protein purification, she made the course enjoyable. Her exams are tough, and she expects you to memorize every detail in her slides. Also, the long report had unrealistically high expectations.
Mixed opinions. Notes are organized and easy to study from, but didn't learn much in lecture. Luckily the material is easy enough to grasp so that doesn't matter. However, her exams are just brutal. The best way to do well is to memorize HER slides, as she will ask very specific questions about HER notes. Also, handwriting labs are just awful.
ELV is a good prof and caring towards students. The notes she provides are awesome, and everything she tests are from there. She loves testing little details; this throws off a lot of people. Memorize EVERYTHING off her slides if you want to walk out with a good grade! The lab reports for this course are very time consuming compared to others.
Seems like a nice lady, but not that great of a teacher. Good news is all the info is on the slides. Bad news is you have to memorise *everything* that's on the slides. Relatively little conceptual work in this course, mostly memorisation. She likes trick questions in exams, so watch out and read carefully.
Class is pure memorization. Prof has lots of errors in the slides, and is VERY unforgiving marking the exams. TA's unhelpful. Prof and TA's are stuck in the academia world with no real world experiences, and as such are unable to relate to students.
Dr. L-V. gets a bad rap because she is stuck teaching a "hard" topic to students who don't want to be there (either it's a requirement, or they are taking it for medvet school). But, the course is actually quite easy (I studied for two days before each exam, and pulled 90% on each). Pay attention, stop whining, and you'll do fine.
Shes really clear about what she wants, and if you can deliver it on exams, youll get a good grade. She is very helpful, especially if you go to her office hours (just don't expect her to tell you the answers, come prepared with specific questions). Shes a bit blunt, which some ppl might take offence to, but she means well. Great instructor.
Her explanations made the concepts seem harder than they really are. I would recommend you to just read the textbook for clarifications as she usually confuses you further. Her tests are on medium-difficulty level, with some tough applied questions.
She over complicates concepts that are relatively simple. If you have any prior high school biology knowledge, you will do fine. The textbook is your best friend when the professor cannot teach.
The lectures get boring after a while. You have to ask about which chapters are specifically on the test otherwise she won't mention it.
Dr. VL expects more of students than did Dr.B-NG. She's a funny person but students take her jokes (sometimes crude) way too seriously. Lectures are long, slides are full of information, labs reports require 8 hours to write and tests require very specific information. Hard class for sure but not completely unfair.
Dr Vogel may seem intimidating at first but most of her exams (midterms and final) are based on her lecture notes and some application question. It IS a memorization class. If you memorize your notes, do well on labs, you'll get a good grade. All her tests are written (mostly short answer - no essay type answers).
She taught half the course and I became very uninterested. Not very clear when teaching. I could not focus, I found the lectures boring, filled with irrelevant info. She was a nice woman though. Her tests were easy, but I had previous knowledge. Without it I would have done much worse than I did. I wouldn't take another class with her.
Although her expectations may be slightly higher than normal, she makes her expectations quite clear (details matter). As long as you are willing to put the effort, you will walk out with a good mark. Lab reports were slightly time consuming. Dr. LV is very fair with the grade scaleexams (certain q's removed if too many students get it wrong).
Prepare to be mentally destroyed. If you can't draw the structures and formulas of every bit of information, you arent going to do very well.
Taught the first half of the course. Includes a lot of unnecessary and confusing information when she lectures. She's a nice lady who obviously knows her field, and she's more than willing to answer questions, but her lectures are disjointed, overcomplicated, and confusing. Read the text, it'll save you and clearly explain the concepts.
The most boring, unspecific, useless professor I've ever experienced. Makes simple biology more confusing and unclear than seemingly possible.
k no.... class was so easy, basically high school biology. As long as you have the textbook you can clarify using that. She's pretty funny sometimes and talks about her cat a lot and tries to relate it to the lectures. All slides are posted online so if you miss a class its easy to catch up
Lectures are so boring and she can use offensive language during her lectures. Makes explaining easy material way harder than it needs to be. Easy class too, so you don't need to show up much/at all. Read the textbook and look over her powerpoints and an easy A for sure.
Dr. Lohmeier-Vogel is a fantastic prof. She only teaches half the course though, which is a shame. Lectures can be a bit long sometimes, but with her making jokes and telling funny stories, it doesn't get boring at all. I really wish she taught the entire course! She posts notes online which is great. There were only a couple exams.
When I first signed up for the class I was really worried since I saw what everyone on here had to say. But I absolutely loved her as a prof. There is a lot of content and memorizing needed, but you just need to make sure you're paying attention and keeping up with the lectures. The labs aren't that bad either. And she's always open to help you.
She is a very fair prof, her tests were very straightforward. However, you need to be willing to put in the work to do well in this course.
Tests hard, based on stuff not covered in lectures, somewhat boring lecturer
She was very clear with her expectations. You must go to class and do all the readings but if you've done all that and taken Bio 30 in high school you'll be fine. You could tell that she was passionate about what she was talking about which made going to class that much better. Overall great prof and would take again.
The class is fairly straight-forward, everything you need to know is on the slides. Be prepared to memorize EVERYTHING. Lab reports are time consuming. Tests are tough but the grading is fair. Tip: if Dr. LV says something will not be on the test, it will definitely be on the test.
honestly she is horrible. i took this course as an easy option and i had to study like a maniac because SHE DOESNT KNOW THE MATERIAL. shes a biochemist and she doesnt understand mitosis/meiosis???? also she does not take questions so dont bother putting up your hand. she teaches straight out of the textbook and still manages to mess it up god damn
She has no idea what she's teaching or how to teach it. This class is intended for non-biology majors and she very obviously does not understand that. Overall the worst class I took this semester
If you have taken bio and chem in high school this class will be a breeze. The lectures are painfully boring so definitely get the textbook and read it. If you study from the textbook you will be fine. Graded on 4 tests all MC. Overall an easy class if you read but pretty boring.
Lectures are painfully boring and straight from the textbok. Tests are easy and basic if you read the textbook. She treats her students like they're stupid and acts annoyed when people ask questions. Easy A class if you read the textbook and make your own notes. Her notes are all over the place and some information was incorrect.
Elke is a very sweet lady but a very very dry professor. I skipped most classes as lectures were literally read directly off the screen. Make sure to get the textbook to supplement the content. Grading criteria for the assignment was unclear.
She really does her best to make the class interesting, despite that most of it is memorizing reactions. The labs are fun but all full lab reports that are long and tedious. The grading for the exams is very fair and she's good about curving your marks if they're lower than they should be. I've definitely had worse classes, so don't be afraid.
Presentations are basically directly from the textbook, and has pretty dry lectures. If you read the textbook and go over her slides, you'll do just fine. Going to class is not mandatory as she doesn't mention anything not in the book or on the powerpoints. Pretty mediocre prof at best.. although a nice lady, wouldn't recommend.
Dr. LV is a decent professor. She definitely knows her material but she often makes errors in her slides and spelling errors run rampant! Her half of the course is more difficult simply because there is more to know. Always makes references to her "prized BCEM 443" class. Read through the slides, memorize reactions/structures, easy enough.
It's a pretty easy class. Read through the slides, take decent notes, try to listen in lectures. She gets a little too into the fruit fly experiment, but that's just her passion showing I guess. Her lectures are VERY BORING though, so be prepare and bring coffee or a drink to keep you awake.
Dr. LV is a little bit all over the place in her lectures. She can run on tangents about biochemistry that can really confuse a first year. If you need to skip a lecture to finish something else, do it you won't miss much. Her notes have tonnes of spelling errors and can be messy but they are online and the textbook is clearer than her lectures.
Get Mastering Biology and take their online tests, textbook isn't mandatory, same with going to class. Lectures are very dry, some fill in the blanks but overall straightforward to do even without going to class.
I noticed that almost all of these reviews are negative, but Dr. Vogel is not a bad professor, her tests are very tough however the material she is required to teach is tough in itself. With that said she is a very fair grader and that helps a lot. BCEM 443 is a really hard class and I think she does a good job with what she's expected to teach us.
Okay so L.V doesn't have any time perception (aka when class ends), thinks that a course for non-bio majors (aka bio 205) is an excuse for her to waste our time with irrelevant and confusing 400-level bio terms, and will even get mad if you walk out of her dry boring lectures. Better yet, she'll add questions on the final NOT EVEN MENTION IN CLASS!
Lohmeier-Vogel was not a great prof to be teaching us about Cell bio. She did not properly discuss topics and used a lot of confusing terminology in class we didn't understand. The midterms were tough, but only because she quizzed us on stuff we never went over in class, and I attended every lecture. I pretty much taught myself the entire course.
It's a lot of material, labs are painful (lab reports have high expectations) and she can be a tough grader. But she's absolutely hilarious and expect to enjoy her lectures, her ppt slides are amazing. If she says it won't be on the exam or it's extra material, KNOW IT. Put the time and effort into this class and you should be fine.
Quite a lot of material to learn but it's very manageable IF you understand what's going on. Lecture material can be dry but she tries her best to keep things interesting. Make sure you know absolutely everything from the notes and you'll do great since her exams are fair. She also tries to balance lab grades if there's a discrepancy between TAs.
The lecture slides were very helpful and well organized. Tests were fair but you definitely have to keep up with the material. Labs were a complete disaster, and the TAs didn't even understand her expectations for reports. She sometimes made inappropriate and unnecessary comments in class. Marks were sometimes curved to make everything more fair.
Dr. LV is a lost cause. Does not take criticism well, and is too ignorant to see that she is the real problem with this course. The material is quite interesting, but very poorly taught and she makes MANY mistakes in her notes and on her answer keys for exams. Definitely avoid this class until she retires.
Taught the second half of my biology for non-majors and it was truly terrible. She is disrespectful to students and uses terms that she does not explain in her lectures. Reading the textbook won't get you a good grade, since she only quizzes on the details from her own, misspelled slides. Ignores the fact that we have other classes to get to. Awful
All the midterms and the final were straight off Dr LV's lec notes. The class involved lots of pathway memorization, but Dr. L-V tried to make things funny with relevant health facts & jokes. Beware though: Her notes often have mistakes. Ask to clarify things you don't understand. Dr. LV is willing to help and caring in her office hrs.
Her teaching style was very practical with multiple aspects of laboratory content in her lectures. She was honest with the class about performance, no honey-coating. I appreciated the time and effort that went into her preparation of course content. She made herself available if you needed help. I hope she continues to enjoy being a scientist :)
