She is very easy going and a great teacher. take this class and her if you can. She is leinent and the tests are fairly easy.
She is easy, nice and lienent. Take her if you can. She is a good teacher and wants you to learn the material in a fun way. The tests are fairly easy if you study a little and are interested in learning spanish.
Teaches most of the material straight from the book (except subjunctive) so if you dislike the book, don't take her. Other than that, she is willing to explain (as well as talk in English to clarify a point). Grades high and gave our class a chance for 10% of our grade extra credit. Willing to rescedule tests if class wants.
I love Professor Brightwell. I've taken her twice already, and I am taking her again next semester for 210. She is extremely nice and really takes the time to make sure that everyone understands the material. She helps out the class by giving extra credit and going over exactly what we need to study for the tests. I would definitely recommend her.
Professor Brightwell is one of the nicest professors I've had. She does teach straight from the book, so that makes it really easy to prepare for class and participate in discussions. The tests are straight from the book, too - as long as you study the vocabulary, you should do fine.
Not the best professor. She does not give comprehensive study guides. You have to do most work on your own, forget about her help.
Mrs. Brightwell is extremely helpful. Attendance is mandatory, easy class. The only down side is that she grades on an 8 point scale. She makes Spanish easy to understand and is very nice. I highly recommend her; I'm taking her again for Span 122.
LOVE HER! Classes are very laid back and comfortable, she jokes with us, and does everything she can to help students do well and learn the material. Several chances for extra credit (perfect attendance is extra credit too). I look forward to going to her class! I also plan on taking her for 122
The class is standardized--so there's not much she can do about projects, tests, quizzes. However, she's a great professor who really enjoys teaching the subject, really nice, and really helpful--if you have to take 122, I definitely recommend her.
Professor Brightwell is the best! She is so helpful and really cares about you learning Spanish. I placed in Spanish 122...and as a Senior I hadn't had spanish for 5 years prior to this class. This class was a breeze, not because it was an easy A, but because Brightwell was such a good professor. I actually learned Spanish and feel confident.
Sra. Brightwell is the best Spanish prof i've had in years! I'm a Spanish major and before her class I was having doubts whether I should keep my major or not. Her class has helped me so much. Take her if you can!!
wonderful lady...class was interesting for the most part. no tests, only short quizzes every week on blackboard and some short papers due. no final either! and the community service will look great on your resume. take her if at all possible! so easygoing and laid back!
Easy to understand, semi-helpful, decent person. Doesn't know much about the syllabus, and does not give too much work. Do not expect to learn too much, especially if you cannot learn on your own. Class is usefully for practicing speaking the language.
Prof. Brightwell is awesome I got a B in the class and didnt really have to work that hard. Definitely reccomended if you want to talk a lot and actually learn.
Extremely helpful, speaks very clearly, wants you to learn the language, and will not call you out in class if you don't volunteer. highly recommend.
Really good teacher, she really cares about the class and about understanding the material. She doesn't check the homework but you need to do it to know what is going on and be able to participate in class, she will call on you if you are to quiet. I recommend taking her if you want to learn Spanish. The tests are pretty hard though.
Loved her! This was my second time in her class and she is amazing. Always available to help, loves to converse with students and is super smart. She makes you love Spanish. Take her class!!
Very sweet and really funny! The only downside is that she doesn't give you that much feedback on your work. For example on my written essay she took off points and the only explanation was question marks or weird wording also during my oral exam she took off six points on one section and the explanation was muchos errors. Good speaking practice!
Super nice! She grades easier than most and makes class interesting. Lots of opportunities to speak. Follows the same format of every other spanish class with the ridiculous 92 for an A. I definitely recommend Brightwell though!
Take her class. She is very nice and makes class interesting and fun. Homework, quizes, test, papers, and pojects are from the department. You should have no problem learning in her class. If you like or love Spanish, then take her class. She grades very fair and is always helpful. Best Spanish teacher in colleg yet.
Great teacher. She really helps you learn the material and keeps you interested.
She is a good teacher but grades too harshly. She has a snotty attitude sometimes that is just not necessary. She is hardcore about attendance so you need to be there. I have had her before and I'm not sure if I will take her again. Don't x her off your teacher list just yet, she is one of the better teachers in the dept.
The majority of class consisted of going over the homework from the textbook, but if you ask questions she is happy to answer them. She cares & makes sure her students understand the material. Very structured and she tries to get the class speaking in Spanish. Grading is ehhh (I have no basis of comparison); She's a great professor- take her.
This professor is really awesome. I have taken her purposely for 210, 309, and 310. Her grading is fair and she never tries to trick students. She is really nice also. Make sure you have both textbooks because you use them. Attendance is mandatory and skipping a class could result in missing an important assignment, so go!
I love Ms. Brightwell! The whole class is in Spanish, but she makes jokes the whole class, and she sympathizes with her students. Take her if at all possible!!
SeƱora Brightwell has been a great professor and I have genuinely enjoyed learning from her. She is extremely nice and very helpful if you have questions. I've taken 300-level courses with her which weren't easy but were manageable. Exams are difficult but class is interesting. She really likes students who participate in class.
Senora Brightwell is awesome! I took her for 309 and currently have her again for 310. She's very helpful, genuinely enjoys teaching her students, and is a very clear instructor. Extremely kind woman who you will enjoy learning from, even though it's not the easiest subject in the world. Definitely recommend.
Mrs. Brightwell is a really good teacher! She knows her spanish and will go over material if the class doesn't understand. Get ready to learn, because she speaks in spanish during the class, BUT you learn a lot of phrases that way. I recommend her for anyone. Theres short online HW every night online, and test are based off HW. Attendance is key
Prof. Brightwell knows her Spanish grammar, which is great because 309 is ALL grammar. I loved her class - she's always cracking jokes! My only complaint is her American accent that carries through into her Spanish at times.
She's great! Engages the class really well. Participation matters, but so long as you contribute a little to class she accepts it. She's really understanding and entertaining in class. Definitely would take again.
She was helpful and encouraging. Put in the time for homework and you will do well.
Brightwell was really nice in class but I felt like she was judgemental if you weren't the best at Spanish. Emailed her multiple times with questions and never once got a response. Make sure to do the homework to do well in class. Didn't collect it all semester & then the last week of class took it for a grade. Tests are really tough.
Her class was tough, but if you put in the effort and do the homework and out of class assignments and participate in class, you'll be fine.
Profesora Brightwell is very helpful, but assigns a lot of homework and can come across as rude and judgmental at times. If you don't do all of the online homework and miss class, you will not pass. Class consists mostly of group work. Tests are hard and lengthy. However, she seems to care about her students and is always willing to offer help.
She's a little condescending and aloof. I worked hard for the grade I got and felt like I taught myself. There is so much homework and the exercises we did in class were nothing like what she put on the exams.
Very helpful, explains things a lot and speaks in English when necessary to make sure students understand material and what she expects
The best Spanish teacher I have ever had. Helped me understand a lot of previous topics I had not completely understood. She's a pleasant woman & enjoys teaching. The tests are tough and content is difficult but she is very helpful and explains well. We had 4 test grades, 1 participation, 1 hw, & the final. Lose participation points for absences.
Prof. Brightwell is amazing. Cares about all of her students and wants everyone to really understand. She is incredibly smart and is very helpful if you go to her office hours. Tests are a little hard but she prepares you well for them.
there's homework due three times a week but that's required for almost every USC spanish class-- if you show up to class and do your homework and study a bit for the exams and compositions, it's an easy a
Professor Brightwell was by far my favorite Spanish professor. She wants her students to do well and encourages you to speak in class. She pretty much doesn't ever speak in English but always explains info in a way thats clear to understand. You have to know your stuff and come to class for an A, but it's possible if you are decent at Spanish.
Good class overall. Need to buy the online codes for the 2 books, but not the hard copies. Homework due every class online. Tests are reasonable. You'll have to study, but she tells you what will be on them. Class periods are a lot of talking with a partner. If you miss class, she docks your participation grade. She's understanding and funny.
I cannot recommend Brightwell enough. The class is tough, no doubt, but it is honestly the best preparation for whoever wants to be a Spanish minor. The grammar and practice is all essential. The tests are not easy, but with some determination you can pull through. Class also goes by really fast and does not feel like a bore at all.
I love Mrs. Brightwell. She is a very sweet and intelligent woman who knows her Spanish literature. The class is based off of readings and lectures. The readings are entertaining and her lectures are entertaining as well.
Profesor Brightwell is a great Spanish instructor if you are really looking to improve. Her teaching style had us learn the grammar material outside of class ourselves, and then we would practice and do examples in class. This made the homework frustrating at times, but getting to practice speaking every class period made it worth it.
Profesora Brightwell was great and I'd definitely take her again. DO NOT GET THE EBOOK. You need the book every single class and it's a pain in the ass to use on an iPad or lug around a computer. The Wifi is also spotty.
I took SPAN 122 during the summer 6 weeks. I was nervous for it being really fast paced and hectic but I actually have a better grade than the SPAN class for 4 months. She DOES follow the book materials everyday. Homework is easy, just USE YOUR BOOK WHILE DOING IT, she posts exam reviews and study! Shes very open to any questions you have.
She knows her material and is willing to answer questions! The flipped classroom approach is frustrating, and it's difficult to learn when the learning (homework) is graded poorly (because of the online textbook). However, this class fills in all the holes in previous Spanish grammar, and Brightwell is interesting, intelligent, and kind. Take her!
Profesora Brightwell is absolutely amazing. She really cares about her students and wants them to understand everything. No matter what your question is, she will take the time to answer it fully and make sure that every gets it. I cannot recommend her enough. Also she has the best sense of style.
I love Professor Brightwell! She always knew that we had other things going on besides this class, and gave a really good absence policy. As long as you do the homework on time, pay attention, and ask questions, you'll do just fine, and she'll give you the same respect you give her.
I really enjoyed her, but do the homework!! It is 25% of your grade and if you dont do it your grade will suffer. She has a dry sense of humor and is very knowledgeable.
Prof. Brightwell is great but the class is so hard. It is extremely hard to teach yourself grammar from a textbook and then be expected to know it the next day. Brightwell was really good about making herself available outside of class to offer extra help though.
The best Spanish teacher I have ever had. Very understanding, helpful, and just an all around good person. Her class takes effort - participate and ask questions, do the homework, and study. But it's not an overly heavy workload and it was an easy A for me. The only thing I'd say is the class can get extremely boring - all speaking activities.
There was homework due 3 times a week but it wasn't bad and the tests were easy as long as you review a little bit. I think this class is easy and prof Brightwell makes herself available outside of class if you need more help. I would for sure recommend this class.
Hardest spanish class i've taken. It's all grammar, and you have homework almost every night. There are 4 exams and a final. She is pretty good at explaining the concepts, but her blackboard is very disorganized and it's hard to find the documents used in class. The class is mostly verbal practice. Participation is important so you have to show up.
Hardest Spanish class I've taken at USC mostly because its all grammar. There's pretty much online hw every night which is mostly easy. There's four exams and a final and she tells you what to focus your studying on. Prof Brightwell is a really nice lady and I hope I can take her again
She is very nice. A lot of the work is online with the textbook but that is not her fault the department decides that.
Unacceptable teaching behavior. I know we are dealing with challenging times and everyone has their own problems, but she shows no regard or empathy for students. I tried to speak with her about a grade I received in the class and I have never felt so coldly regarded by a teacher. I did nothing to illicit this response. I would not recommend her.
I had her for Spanish 122 and she was amazing. She was quick to respond to an email and was very caring towards me during the semester. She is willing to give extra help on the side if you ask, and participation is important because it shows you care and she appreciates that.
I took an online class, so I had a zoom class every week which didn't consist of actual teaching, just reading over the book. You have to buy a course code. The homework is hard and there's so much of it. The tests and quizzes are done through the lockdown browser and you really need to study vocab and grammar.
She is a great professor! there are a lot of quizzes and tests, but her study guides are just like the actual test/quiz. Compared to other 100 level Spanish's there isn't a lot of homework. She is very understanding and will help you with any questions you have. I really loved having her as a professor.
Very friendly and helpful. There were times she called on me in class and I said I wasn't sure, and she made sure to extensively explain whatever it was. By the end of the class I felt I could actually hold a conversation in Spanish.
Really encouraging classroom enviornment
Professor Brightwell is a great person in general. She is super caring, encouraging, and funny. Spanish content is super boring and difficult to me, but I can get through it with her as my professor. The worst part of this class is the heavy homework but that is for anyone who takes the class regardless of professor.
Prof. Brightwell moved my grade up that was on the border of a B+ because of my high in-class participation! attendance is mandatory, so be prepared to come to every class. the content of 302 is hard, so be ready to put in work. She is always willing to answer any questions! 10/10 recommend for such a challenging course.
Really caring professor. It's a hard class inherently but she does a good job of explaining. You don't need to buy a hard copy of a textbook but at least for 302 you need to buy online textbooks.
Awesome lady who teaches content very well. The class is structured to be difficult, grammar-intensive, and immersive with lotsss of online homework. However, she makes sure everyone understands the concepts, makes in-class discussions very fun, and will speak in English to make sure everyone is getting it. I'm taking her again in the fall for 303.
I LOVED Dr. Brightwell! She gave a study guide for each exam, and it was an accurate reflection. She's a super cool woman, and I feel like I learned so much from her. We had a lot of opportunities to speak in class, and she gave great feedback!
She was awesome. We had 3 short essays graded by her, 3 peer reviewed essays that were just completion, in class writings that were completion and then the final. The prof graded essays were able to be revised too so not very difficult to get an A. Attendance is important, but class goes by quick and the topics you cover are actually interesting.
Professor Brightwell is a great professor but 302 is a hard class in general. I wouldn't rather take the class with any other professor as she is great, but the class was a difficult course. She is very fair with her grading but it is based on a lot of assignments throughout the year.
One of the best Spanish instructors I have had, especially since 309 is a relatively hard course. You can tell she really cares about her students and enjoys teaching.
The class itself is very hard- 4 exams, plus the final, 2 compositions, and hours of homework due MWF. Prof. Brightwell cares about her students and wants you to be prepared, the material can just get confusing. You have to go to every class for your grade + to understand overall. She gave us a test the Mon of Thanksgiving break, wouldn't move it.
I genuinely love this woman so much. She is very good at connecting with her students--not to mention her outfits are so good. There is a lot of homework online, but that seems pretty normal for a language class and all of the homework really helped me prepare for the exams. There's a lot of talking in groups/pairs for practice and it really helps.
You can only speak spanish in this class, and the material was difficult but if you study and do your work and participate you can get an A. Discussion based class, and heavy on homework. Ellen is funny, lively, approachable and a good professor who really does know the material. Great class environment and went by fast everyday. Would take again
302 is just a really hard class. The grammar topics are really specific but not is a way that you can easily memorize. Don't expect an A, study a lot. There are not quizlets for the VHL homework. Sra. Brightwell is really nice and does a good job of explaining and answering questions/emails.
I love her! With any Spanish class here there is lots of homework with VHL. We had thorough discussions of the readings in case you didn't understand it. She is funny and actually cares about everyone and will ask genuine questions about you. A good amount of partner-talking and she encourages you to do your best with what you know.
This class has honestly been easier for me than 209/210. If you study what she tells you, I don't think it is difficult to get 95+ on exams. She also is very fair when grading compositions and they are not too difficult at all. Also, I love her outfits, and she is a very sweet person; I would definitely take her again!
Ellen is a great professor as she makes a high-level class such as SPAN 302 seem much easier than it is. You are expected to speak Spanish the entire class, but that helps in learning it. Lots of online homework that is easy but time consuming. She is funny, relatable and so stylish. Speaking Spanish with her is low-stakes and she will never judge.
SO very sweet and the class was very straightforward. Lots of homework, but doesn't take too long and wasn't hard at all. Tests are exactly like the practices and homework. If you have questions she will explain it very well too. Such a great professor!!
Choose your partner at the start of the semester wisely. I got stuck with someone I didn't like for the entire semester lol. Lots of homework, lo cual es tipico, and the exams are straightforward and concise. Quick feedback and lenient grading on compositions. Great experience and instructor!
Best spanish professor at this school, she is so helpful and really cares a lot about her students and wants everyone to succeed
If you are someone who struggles with Spanish I would take her. She is great and goes over topics in depth. She splits her grading among many things so you have opportunities to save yourself if you mess up. She is so understanding and overall a great professor and I would 100% take her again. Can't recommend her enough
Got an easy A+ in every SPAN before and fought for a B+ here. Afaik Im not alone. Not rly her fault--might be a bit harsher of a grader, mostly I think the content is hard. Read the syllabus, she's strict on those policies (nice abt it tho). Typical amt of hw for SPAN (lots). Overall cool person, approachable, class was chill, not a bad choice.
She is super knowledgeable but that can mean she expects more from you than she explains. The class have five exams which can be exhausting. Her exams are harder than the review that she posts on blackboard which can be frustrating but your spanish will improve with her. She requires spanish during class and her office hours are helpful.
Extremely rude when I reached out for help and always accused me of cheating when I generally never did! Everytime I asked for help no reply and never replied. EXTREMELY RUDE but not an extremely hard class. She just was a bad teacher.
Took a year ago, not bad! Really enjoyed her teaching, communication is clear and answers questions very well. If you worry about exams, just make sure you understand the grammar topics well before going in and you will be okay. Lots of homework prepares you for the real thing - if you dont understand the homework, thats a sign to talk to her.
