Very easy to get along with. A very good teacher.
She might have had quizes every Friday but she was still very fun and her class was easy
Ellen is a very good prof...quizzes every friday that help your grade, exams cover lots of material, notes posted on web...attending class is a must if you expect to do well, willing to answer questions if you have them, extra credit when class seems smaller than usual
Great teacher, optional final, just takes time to post grades. A must take prof.
She's a fun professor and I suggest taking a class with her!! She tends to curve.
You gotta love Ellen. She is an excellent teacher and I think you should take a class with her if you get the oppurtunity.
very passionate and entuhsiatic about biology and her energy is contagious. she's pretty funny too.
Ellen is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She makes class and learning interesting and fun.

She is energetic, and loves what she does. You get the notes off the internet, and sometimes you recieve bonus points for just being there. Will have to study hard for your quiz's and tests. But they are either multiple choice or have word bank. Just attend class, study the notes every night, and enjoy the class.
did not like here at all!!
Do what she asks you to do and review for quizzes/tests... that's all there is to it.
She loves what she does and it shows, really sets students up for success, and you have to love that when you raise your hand with a question she'll raise her hand back as she calls on and answers you!
Brisch is an awesome teacher! She made learning fun and easy. She always has the time to help you and loves to give bonus points. I have already had her for several classes and each time i get a great grade. I would her to anyone!
Brisch is an amazing person and professor, she really cares about her students and enjoys teaching. Make sure you come to class everyday because she does give points for attendance and if you miss a day you will miss out on a 5 or 10 point assignment. Just study hard for your mid-term and final and come to class everyday and u are guranteed an A.
Very Fun! She really makes you think about big issues that you did not know about. One of my favorite classes, especailly for a summer class.
She rocks Great teacher you will like her
Great Professor! Professor of the year in MN. She makes you want to learn and study. Her tests are difficult, but just come prepared and she usually adds on 10 points to everyones test to curve them.
brisch is amazing! she's always willing to help and clarify anything. she gives out a quiz every friday but will usually let you take it in groups. gives a lot of bonus attendance points too. definitely take her class for any bio. she's amazing.
shes amazing! i loved this class! very hard not to pass. she keeps it interesting and knows what she is talkin about. highly recommend!
She's really energetic and fun, and very accomodating, but her tests are hard. Her lectures are out of the book, so you should definately get one to help study
She's very good at what she does. She has TONS of people in her class who are just taking the class for generals but she still makes it interesting and is extremely cheery about ....well...everything! She's very eccentric and fun. Can't wait to take another class with her in the summer!
She's the MOST amazing professor ever! She's quirky and fun, and she definitely has a love for Biology. The class is not particularly difficult, but that does not make it boring! Even though I had learned most of the subject matter in high school, it was awesome to learn it from her view! Definitely take one of her classes if you get a chance!
Her lecture is so interesting and inspires you to study biology. I love her a lot.
She is a great teacher. I don't like Biology, but she made it tolerable. Balances her excitement for biology and knowing that a lot of her class are looking for a general course. She knows what it's like to be a student. Tests and Online quizzes are only points. She gives extra credit for attendance in class and extra speakers. Good class!
Brisch has lots of energy, lots of passion, and seems to love teaching. I was hesitant prior to taking her class and now I would recommend her to all my friends!!!
My favorite teacher.
one of the easiest classes. she doesn't push you and the info all comes from the test. love that we don't have to work hard in the class but we may not learn much but who cares!!!!
Professor Allen Brisch is by far the best teacher of Biology that i have seen so far, she really teaches you the important stuff. very good at explaining stuff. come to class listen, do the quizzes online and do the pre quiz practice tests online and you will get a very good score on the test if you read the book maybe be a much better grade.
Amazing professor!! Loved every second of her class. She's very friendly and her teaching style is so informal. She uses a lot of anecdotes to help us understand the material. Great lady. Take a class with her if you can...
I really liked her teaching style. Very informal, but she knows her stuff! She tries her best to make learning the hard and boring stuff fun. She tries to engage people but not involuntary. She makes you want to volunteer. She has lots of energy and you can tell she loves what she does.
This class is really boring!!! However, the teacher makes it much more interesting and is very helpful. The exams were somewhat difficult but there are many extra credit oppertunities to make up for it.
When she tells you everyone will fail the first test... She's not kidding. You can go over the notes and read the book as many times as you want but you'll still fail! The only way to pass is studying the practice questions
Ellen is a great teacher, but you do need to do the legwork and take the time to read the chapters. The lectures cover the big picture, but her tests do ask specific, comprehensive questions that you need to read the book for. Her office hours are limited, so it's hard to go in and ask her questions, but she's very prompt via e-mail!
Ellen is an amazing professor who truly cares about her students. She makes difficult tests, but gives you every opportunity to succeed. If you are having any issues she is more than eager to assist. Great professor. Wonderful person.
Brisch is an excellent professor and mentor, but it is a difficult class. The lecture is big picture, the exams are comprehensive and detail oriented, so read and take notes on the chapters. She's always eager to help, so don't hesitate to go in and spend some time in her office if you're struggling. HIGHLY recommended!
Ellen is an amazing professor and really cares about the success of her students. She will make sure you are successful in any course as long as she can see you are trying and asking her questions. I would recommend Ellen to anyone, Bio major or not.
Ellen is the Best Professor I have Ever. Had. She cuts the crap tells you what you need to know and teaches it in an interesting and fun way.
Do not be late. She glares and makes a point to stop lecturing until you sit down then call you out on it. Do the practice exams. Read the book because the lecture is god awful.
She is very willing to help her students. However, sometimes she oversimplifies the lecture so you need to do online quizzes to be ready for the test. Very easy if you utilize the online quizzes and in class quizzes I got an A.
I feel ashamed to say this. However, but the tests come from the practice tests posted and makeups a combination of questions on both versions of an exam. To get an A, you can just look at the practice tests and recognize the answers on the exam without understanding them. Lectures are fun & made me get up for an early class in winter.
She enjoys what she does, but does not do a good job at explaining everything in a clear, understadning way. You can tell she knows the material very well and has a passion for it but she doesn't do well when trying to explain it to students who have never seen the material before. Overall she's entertaining but the lecture can get pretty dry.
Brisch is an amazing professor! She truly cares about her students and actively takes classes at the University to keep up with the hard work needed to put in for college students. She is very knowledgeable, kind hearted, and very approachable. Exams are hard- study lots! Lab rolls into the class thank goodness!
Unarguably one of the best biology professor I've had in college. Someone who knows her stuff. She can take you on a journey of biochemical stories if you let her just because she knows her stuff and what she is talking about. Again one of the few professors who actually encourage students to learn. Please take her class you regret a bit.
Ellen Brisch is by far my favorite professor. She genuinely cares about each student in her class and does a very good job of keeping the class fun and full of discussion. She's the type of professor to bend over backwards just to help a student out. She keeps a good balance of high expectations combined with a fun and caring atmosphere.
Dr. Brisch has been/will be such an influential professor in my academic experience. She has done so much in her lifetime that relates to average, not SUPER smart people like most students and she makes sure that you know that you can succeed at anything. Intelligent; witty; creative; will do whatever it takes to help you get a great grade.
ELLEN BRISCH DESERVES A 10/5! She is such a wonderful professor, and really cares about students. She is a kindhearted and amazing individual. She comes from an unique background with so many experiences which makes her extremely relatable. She has been by far the most interesting and educational professor in my college career.
Ellen really cares about all her students. The class was sometimes boring, and she often conducted lots of labs, but it was still an interesting class. A lot of work at times, but never too much to handle. All her books are open note, open book, and open quiz, too!
Brisch is one of the kindest professors I've ever had. I never really liked or understood Biology until I took a class with Ellen. She is really understanding about missing class as long as you let her know. I can't recommend her enough!
Very great professor. Shes very forgiving about missing class and work. Lets you make it up. Also does fun activities such as bring food and offers lots of extra credit. Absolutely love this sweet lady!
She is very nice but she doesn't seem to understand that a lot of us haven't taken a bio class since HS. The copious amount of unnecessary homework is ridiculous. She makes this class a thousand times harder than it has to be. Has a lot of time on her hands...
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! I never really enjoyed cells until she started teaching ! Easy to learn from and super engaging. Use real life examples to make you understand better. Definitely recommend her!! Also, shes super kind and cares about her students. Super funny too
Labs were really fun and easy to understand. Projects and assignments were clearly laid out. Easy to talk to, understanding about personal issues and attendance. The kind of teacher you WANT to say hi to in the halls. Had to write quite a few papers, but not graded super hard.
She is kind, cooperative and she loves questions so I was very happy about that she won't mind any question
Ellen's class where u will enjoy and get the complexed things very easy she makes it so easy and gets into your mind
She is really passionate about the subjects she teaches. If you show an interest, she will go to the ends of the earth to help you pass. If you show disinterest or skip a few of the lab periods, you're screwed.
She is the best teacher I had this whole year at school. She loves what she is teaching and really shows that she cares. She is easy to talk to and loves to help. Her class wasn't hard and asking questions really helps. If you are late on homework, she understands and still accepts it. I would definitely take this class again and recommend it!
Ellen is an amzing professor. She makes a hard class manageable by offering tons of extra credit. Always willing to help and is a great lab proffesor as well as lecture professor. Go to class and read and you will be fine.
Best professor at MSUM. Super kind and cares about her students understanding. Goes above and beyond to help you, super open to questions in lecture and lab. The material can be kind of hard but she makes it understandable. Someone give this woman a raise!!!
Class seems like its going well and then it just slaps you in the face. Her tests are extremely difficult but she tries to find ways to give extra points or her boosters. Her format of some test questions are just plain awful. She's eccentric but shes a lot of fun. You can tell she cares, but she doesnt understand how hard her class is...
Ellen is the best. Her lectures are so fun and she makes things very relatable, which is nice because the class can be confusing. There is a lot of memorization and mastering of the skills of this class. Take good notes and use the study practice exams to help prepare for the exams!
I enjoyed her class so much, super interactive and could make the lecture class laugh. She kept lectures interesting. She would make students feel comfortable asking questions even in a large lecture class.
She is such an amazing intelligent professor. Although she has a lot of assignments, they are painless to do. The points rack up! She gives pretty good feedback and is usually pretty clear about her expectations. She is also very flexible and understanding. I always looked forward to her class.
TAKE A CLASS WITH ELLEN. By far the most caring, helpful prof I have had. Her classes are difficult but completely manageable and you will actually learn something. If you need help, she will drop everything to help you understand the content and her lectures are awesome-actually entertaining and engaging.
Really cool person, seems awesome. She just is way too into the subject and makes her tests impossible to actually do anything better than a C on. Unless this is your only class, you dont have a job, or social life you wont pass her tests. Good luck.
Ellen is by far the best professor I have had. She is super nice and funny!
The most caring and enthusiastic professor I've ever had. Anybody who thinks her exam was tough may have to actually read the textbook?! I have other classes, a full-time job, and a social life. I got an A. A lot of extra credit opportunities. Very fair, encouraging, and knowledgeable on what she's teaching!
She is the best professor I have ever had. Even though her class was tough to master, she gave us everything she could do to help her students. She is very funny, kind, responsible, hardworking, caring, and biology-loving person. If you work hard which Dr. Brisch helps, you are going to be fine.
Ellen is my favorite professor at MSUM and I loved Cell Bio with her. She is so nice and helped me achieved the grade I wanted in her class. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are pop quizzes in her class that are used as attendance. She is by far the most caring professor at MSUM and always says hi when I see her in the hall.
Cant wait to take another class with her! I took BIOL104 and BIOL111 with her and had a great time in both. She is eccentric and goes above and beyond to make sure you understand the material. Some of her tests were difficult but she gave plenty of opportunities for extra credit & to retake exams. She is quite funny which is always a plus!
Took this class to fulfill a LASC goal. Its currently 2021 so it was online asynchronous. She seems like a nice person and has passion for the material but really out of touch with student feedback. The workload is outrageously excessive and takes 8+ hours a week to complete FOR A LEVEL 100 CLASS!? Assumes everyone knows as much as she does.
I love Ellen. She's an amazing professor and very helpful. Her materials are very hard but if you do a lot of study you'll be able to succeed in this class.
Literally only talked about crocheting, her garden, and her dog didn't teach.
She is an amazing professor, she is willing to help whenever. I hate biology but the way she taught made it so in enjoyed the class and was willing to put in the work. There are 3 exams, and weekly quizzes. if you pay attention in class and read the textbook(she provided), you should be getting an A.
I adore Ellen! She made a subject that I didn't care about incredibly fun and interesting. She is just such a sweet person who really cares about her students. She gives out a lot of extra credit. She is always available to answer any questions and enjoys when students participate in class.
Ellen is a wonderful professor and educator. She cares about her students and has an intoxicating personality that's hard not to love. I've never cared for life sciences but I loved her Human Bio course. Be sure to participate in class and ask questions. Stay on top of assignments and you will do great in her class. She is very intelligent too!
Ellen is a great professor! Her online courses are great and she is willing to answer all of your questions. She is a tough grader on labs, and the exams are very difficult and timed. However, if you do well on the other quizzes which are multiple attempts, you should do well in the class! Just be sure to ask questions and you will be better off!
She is good professor and knows what she is doing, it is a fast pace and the tests are very confusing but you get 2 attempts on each test. It does not feel like a 100 level class more like a 300 level class but if you put in the work you will be okay.
Ellen Brisch is a great professor! Care for her students. Response to email, phone, text very quickly. Problem solver. She used a software where she posts Assignments, quizzes and her class lectures. I would love to take her class again. If you don't like Group project don't take her class then she will assign project with groups.
Ellen did an amazing job teaching Human Biology. She knows the information she is teaching and loves teaching about it. She brought a positive energy to zoom class every day and loved to see her students log on. She cares about her students' sucess and is very understanding if you need extra help or time on an assignment or test.
Dr. Brisch is super knowledgeable about biology. I dread taking my other Zoom classes, but Ellen made her lectures engaging and fun. I love all the little stories she tells about her life. She gives multiple attempts on quizzes, no final, and plenty of extra credit. I feel like I learned a lot without being overwhelmed.
I love Ellen! She's very caring and always goes out of her way to make sure you understand the material. She also has some pretty great sayings. The one thing I didn't enjoy about this class was the virtual lab component. It was frustrating to watch other people doing labs instead of getting hands on experience.
Dr. Ellen is the best Biology professor at MSUM! Passionate about her subject matter and genuinely concerned for her students learning.
This prof. is so easy and sweet 100/10!
I have taken a class with Ellen before and loved her as a professor, but I wish I never took this course. This is an INSANE amount of work for a 100 level class. Zoom class, discussion boards, lengthy quizzes, and SUPER lengthy assignments. Each assignment IS SO TIME CONSUMING and difficult, I wish I never took this as an elective....
she is nice but gives a lot of writing assignment. and you have to read 500 pages to do one assignment out of 15 and the grading system is awful. and if your planning to take this class make sure your not taking a lot of classes because this class demands all of your time. who's ever taking this class good luck.
Lots of quizzes, a few exams but the exams are just all the quiz questions. Book is free. She does observations, and if you go to class she will go through them with you. Any questions you have she will answer, and if you are wanting to take an exam early/ later she will 100& let you. She super funny and sweet!
Ellen Brisch is the best professor ive had and ive been a student at 3 universities now. Biology is definitely not easy, but Brisch does research on the best teaching habits to actively increase retention and inclusivity. Taking any of her classes you'll learn a lot but be prepared to switch to a science major is you are not already
Ellen is an OK professor. I hated the labs since so much stuff was online. She might be a good professor but only to a few students. Her lectures are very interesting.
I loved Ellen's class! She very obviously knows what she's talking about and is very passionate about her work. The class was easy and interesting, she gives lots of extra credit. Much of her grading is tests and weekly quizzes. Would take again.
Dr. Brisch is what makes MSUM go 'round. She is one of the kindest, most caring professors I have ever met. She'll engage with students, and she emails back so quickly! Her lectures are extremely hilarious, and if you can, talk Sigourney Weaver with her! Her class is pretty book-heavy, but all the assignments are book based so it makes sense.
Ellen's class is very easy if you show up to lectures and put in effort. Offers extra credit and more than one attempt on quizzes and exams. Very accommodating to student's needs, as well as being great to listen to and learn from!
Ellen is very personable! Very clear she wants her students to succeed. She posted the weekly reading so we didn't have to purchase a textbook. Ellen also offered multiple attempts on quizzes and exams and was extremely accommodating to all her students.
Ellen is awesome! She does a great job teaching and letting everyone know what is expected of them. You can retake the quizzes and tests so there is not reason to fail! Just put in the work and you will be alright!
Professor Brisch is engaging and passionate about biology. The class has frequent quizzes but is manageable with the free textbook. I found unstuck AI and weekly study sessions to be super helpful for acing the exams.
Brisch is a gem. Take her class.
If you struggle with Biology like I do, take her class anyway because her class shockingly simple. I'm doing Human Biology and all you need to do is show up for lecture and you'll be golden. She made exams open note and as long as your efficient with notes you'll pass with flying colors. Weekly quizzes have multiple attempts, overall great class.
She was great to have. Very lenient when it came to homework and showing up for class. All tests and exams were open-note and open-book. The final exam was even optional. She was nice and made class easy to understand.
If you take this class with her she tailor makes it each ear to fit what the students want to hear. Ellen is a sweet and caring human being and as a professor even better! Sometimes content could be a bit tough, but with the right amount of critical thinking and willingness to ask for help the class is a breeze!
