Not at all helpuf and unfair results

Her lectures are pretty boring she stays behind the podium and has a monotone voice. The class is not too difficult. My strongest issue is her inability to sympathize with students. She refuses to give any type of extensions, grades unfairly & toughly, and she's overall not flexible or accommodating in any way. I would avoid her if you can.

This is a review for CS 211 She is horrible at getting grades out in 211.She takes a month to grade one exam and on top of that, out of 3 projects we submitted, only one is graded even though its on a computer. She ignores students questions and leaves it up to us to determine our grade since shes dragging so bad. Ive never been so uncertain

FOR 211. DO NOT TAKE IF U HAVE CHOICE. Teaching is poor, 80% of her lectures are iclicker discussion time. She leaves you ill prepared for labs and programs. Get ready to chatgpt your way through this class, you'regonna need it. I can't believe i'm paying 2 grand for this. College is a scam 2000%. American education is a scam.

CS211. The content of the course is not difficult but when you pair it with a terrible professor, things won't go well.

CS 211. Do not take this class with Professor Kidane. lectures relate in no way to labs or projects. This class is extremely self taught and she assigns a lot of reading for labs. The most frustrating things were the grades. You will not know your lab1 grade until 2-3 months into the curriculum. You will never know where you stand in the classgrade

Kidane had to take care of 400+ students and because of that, she was unable to grade stuff on time. I don't know why UIC would let a single inexperienced professor take care of so much. Grades were out so late that I had to late drop to not decimate my gpa. Definitely do not work part-time unless you have time to email her 24/7 for grades.

CS 211! You probably already know she takes 3 months to grade one item. She is so inaccessible. She will say to use Piazza to ask question and you will never get an answer on there. She thinks this is a 400 level class. CS 211 is supposed to be easier than 251. 211 with her is harder than 251. Projects are insane, and exams are even crazier.

CS 211. Avoid taking this professor if you can, she makes the class much harder than it should be. All lecture is is just her reading off the slides line by line rarely explaining how or why anything works. The projects are WAY harder than they should be and go several levels above what we do in lecture. Be prepared to learn everything on your own

Kidane was an awful professor who took 2 years to grade something and who gave a project that had the whole class crying. would never take her again and she mad e the class seem like its a grad-level class. She seemed careless about student questions and she made us feel like we were nothing to ask a simple question after lecture.

This is actually for 341 and bro she is useless, she doesn't help at all on piazza she just gives the most vague answers to students that need clarification. Her descriptions for projects are also vague and we're spending more than half the time trynna debug the autograder rather than working on the project

very unpredictable. isn't punctual on releasing projects and will not notify you when she does. not enough time to work on projects knows stuff but doesn't answer well. if you say "my mom died, i need a day's extension on a project" and she would say something along the lines of that mean "well, too bad...". Happened to one of my friend.

Doesnt release test cases in our last project and either had to rely on building our own test cases and thats when finals are near. She has homeworks or projects due every other week. or has an exam.

Honestly, this course is humbling. Nobody knows where they stand grade wise, and this class is overall a mess. Exams are 45% of our grade and projects are 40%. Get ready to be thrown into languages you never even learned and figuring everything out on your own.

The class felt extremely disorganized and the lectures did not teach the material well. The tests and assignments in this class were excessively difficult and often covered concepts that we either never discussed in lecture or only covered very briefly. I would avoid taking this class until the professor changes.

Don't take her as a professor. She actually had the audacity to assign us a project on a language she spent 30 minutes teaching for only ONE lecture. She's extremely disorganized, never grades on time (still waiting for midterm 2), and never uses class time appropriately. ONLY TAKE HER if this is your graduating semester and you need the class

She literally is a hell kind of person. She assigns us an extra credit assignment with requiring only presentation but then when a lot of people choose to do that assignment , she changes te structure of the assignment adding more work. she will grade even on the body language and other silly things. And all that for 3 percent Dont take her.

Don't go to UIC. If you have to then don't major in CS at UIC. If you have to then never taken Ellen Kidane as a professor. If you have to .... start praying and stocking up on tissues

No idea how she got promoted from being a TA to a professor.

If a child taught this class they would teach it better than professor kikhara. She doesn't grade ANYTHING in a timely manner, she doesn't help during her office hours moreso than re reading your errors back to you, doesn't provide any useful study material for exams. She's stalked me from 141 to 211 and now 341, and somehow she only gets worse.

Im passing this class because its an EASY class the professor does unnecessary stuff to make the course harder like making a project without giving the test cases, so we have to go to office hours wait in line and then let the TA shows us the test case. its just unnecessary and time consuming.

A really really really.... bad professor. Can't teach can't grade. Very strict and shows no mercy. Taking revenge probably. AVOID her at all cost. If you can't, then try to survive. Projects are not bad if you start early. The problem is she makes it harder. For tests you can't really prepare unless you are a genius. Thats all.

Me and all my homies dislike Ellen Kidane

The emotional turmoil her class put me through was unmatched. She gave never ending zybooks assignments and projects, and difficult labs that needed to be done within an unrealistic lab time which depended on the extra readings we needed to do and not the lecture material. She also released all the projects late and took too long to grade them.

Why did the developer refuse to use any language but F#? Because every time he tried a different language, it was always F# this error, F# that bug!

Her idea of a good class is mandating attendance for lectures and then hiding iclicker questions so you can't review mistakes, hiding test cases and having arbitrary formatting issues that you cannot detect, creating a compounding project without warning, and not having midterms graded even as the semester ended so you have a surprise 15% grade.

Made things more difficult than they needed to be. Had little to no considerations for students and their own lives and circumstances.

The vast list of topics, late grading, the structure, and the pattern of the exams make it feel like four courses in one.

If you can choose to take this (CS 341) with another professor, please do so. She is easily the worst professor I've had at UIC.

She's a nice person with horrible teaching skills. Maybe we can't blame her because UIC keeps throwing her between different classes instead of out of UIC.

As a person who's had several classes with this teacher and Ta-ed with her, she seems very under prepared compared to other teachers. She grades late, skims content and expects you to learn everything else your self. Will develop a pattern of grading and when you get used to it she switches up so you lose points. Will hide test cases for projects.

Love that the lecture notes are never posted filled out. Also really enjoyed the suspense of not knowing where I was grade-wise until hours before the final, real fun stuff. Particularly enjoyed the brief introductions to random "career day" on the last few days of class instead of conducting actual review sessions. /s Please save yourself.

The teacher seems kind initially but is unhelpful and inconsiderate. Despite technical issues with an iClicker question, she refused to give credit even after personally witnessing the correct response. Lectures lack effective delivery.

No instructions whatsoever

The grading in this class was the most delayed I have ever seen. We didn't get our Midterm 2 grades back until hours before the final, so it was too late for it to even be used for studying.

she has no idea what she is doing, and it's very obvious that the homework assignments and projects were not created by her. we covered BNF for a single lecture and the last 2 projects in the class were entirely on it. it actually makes no sense

You have to go to the TAs for literally everything in this class. Want answers to any of the study guide questions for the exams? Well, she won't give them to you so you better go ask the TAs. Want help for a project because she won't give you any of the test cases? Go ask the TAs. I feel bad for them because they're constantly swamped.

I really dislike the fact that the one review session that went over coding questions for the final exam was held outside of class at a time many people could not make. Instead of doing it during lecture, we had 3 guest lectures and another lecture that was entirely student presentations when we should have been reviewing for the final exam.

We spend time on mid presentations instead of the study guide.

You do learn a lot in the class, but the structure of the class is terrible. She releases grades very late and doesn't do much review for the exams

This professor makes students life miserable towards the end of the semester. She doesn't grade anything on time. She doesn't do final exam review for the last few remaining lectures and instead has guest lectures. Just avoid taking her.

This is by far the worst professor I had taken at UIC, she was terrible in 211 and 341. 361 which is a tougher class was easier, considering that the professor for that class was amazing. PLEASE, if you like to actually suffer, go ahead and take her.

Grades horribly, will give you -75% if you forget one line of code even if your code still works perfectly. Will not round a 89.4%, acts like shes paying for the A out of her pocket. Horrible Exams. 341 was supposed to be easy but was the hardest class ive taken so far. Shes basically a student, Idk how she got hired. She is just not built for this

Kidane is accessible outside of class, and really does give a lot of extra credit, but a lot of the times, the choices she makes really feels like she does not put herself in the shoes of a student. She has a lot of pro's, where if you put in the effort, you WILL get an A, but the structure of the class is very bad, and feels half-haphazardly made.

Professor doesn't care about your unexpected family problems and puts the course in front. Missed my midterm and one project because of a family issue and had to leave to my home country. She seemed nice first about it but later she asked me to get a letter from dean.I got the letter from the dean but she said its not the letter and she wanted else

Lectures and Homework are not even on the same page if the lecture is 2+2=4 the homework and projects would be (a+b)^2=a^2+b^2+2ab. She wasn't even audible to me in the class. When I asked her she would be aware of it for some time and the same repeats. Worst CS professor for UIC.

She speaks quietly during lectures. The lectures only matter because of attendance, the exams are worth only a total of 35% of the course. Meaning if you just do the homework and labs, and get a 50% on each exam, you pass with a B.

She's super passive aggressive in lecture and on piazza. Also, how does it take 30+ days to grade a midterm??? However, compared to solworth who also teaches 341, she's seems slightly better. Both are still awful though and they both need major reform and or to be fired. 341 is an important class and its frustrating that the worst profs teach it.

She has to be the WORST professor at UIC. The reason why UIC's CS program is not as good as other schools is because of professors like Kidane.

She does a lot of jabaiting on piazza when you ask questions based on the exam, making you think all the material on the study guide will be on the exam. She also makes a homework, project, and exam due on the same week which is inconsiderate. Autograders are released on unexpected times for assignments.

The class is so disorganized, and rocky. There is no clear schedule of when things are assigned or due and are often shadow dropped without warning students. Lectures are 90% Iclicker and 10% actual content, rarely ever does live coding, HW and projects have too much requirements and they are quick to take off ALOT of points off your assignment.

I would've been fine with the structure of the lecture, and the workload. However, she grades things extremely late, all students got their first midterm score back on the last day for class withdrawal. She published all of the students' LOAs on Piazza as well??? Late grading, assignments and projects are uploaded very late as well.

Kidane isn't a great professor for CS 341. The class had potential but was poorly taught. Lectures involve worksheets with no access to notes or explanations. Grading is overly strict. Exams are tough. Hidden test cases on projects/assignments. Marking off points for arbitrary formatting issues feels excessive for a 300-level course.

Worst professor in the multiverse. Unorganized, releasing assignments randomly. Had homework, project, and exam in one week. Cuts marks for small mistakes, unclear instructions, leaked student info on Piazza, and delayed exam marks for over 30 days. Auto-graders are broken. Shouldn't be allowed to teach. Do not respond to emails.

Very poorly structured class. Homeworks and Projects often get released without anyone knowing, autograders are often released last-minute, very few resources to aid learning, very little leeway in grading... just feels like she doesn't really care much. PLEASE avoid.

She releases unfinished assignments, changes the requirements with minimal notification, and limits use of the autograder. She tried to claim that her poor course evaluations are due to racism (which is absolute insanity).

just overall pretty terrible. gives us busy work and too much of a time crunch to finish projects in a language she started teaching 2 weeks ago. Instead of teaching us the content, she quizzes us first, waits for us to get it wrong, and then decides to actually go into the topic. In general, Professor Kidane isn't the worst at teaching material, she actually explains things well. However, this does not excuse her other behavior. She seems to always have an attitude when answering questions on piazza or in class. There is little to no flexibility with her. Took her over a month to grade our first midterm. Avoid at all cost.

She is rude to students on Piazza and in office hours, gives empty promises for help, leaked student info on Piazza and didn't address it or apologize. Many points off for small mistakes. Lectures were 75% worksheets on material we barely learned. Grading was never done until last minute. The MOST frustrating and unhelpful professor I've had.

violated students' privacy, released a hw & project at the same time right b4 finals week, gave us an unfinished project then disappeared from piazza and wont answer anyone's questions, takes forever to grade things, attendance is graded on correctness, projects are graded on things like style/comments (???) Kidane fr is evil. We do so much for attendance for it to be worth only 5%, we mostly do paper worksheets in class and she does not teach much. Median on the second midterm was 57%. She also violated FERPA rights and disclosed private information to the class. Not a good professor at all.

It seems like she doesn't care about her job at all. She violated FERPA rights and didn't even give a apology (or acknowledge it happened). Her attitude towards students is so bad to the point I know multiple people who have submitted formal complaints to the dean about her.

I truly believe that most students who have taken the class could replace her as professor and be exceptionally better at it. This is not personal, she seems like a nice person but being a CS professor is not for her. How can one be a CS professor and manage to accidentally violate FERPA on a public forum. I wish I had more room to write.

She's very passive aggressive and majority of lecture is spent doing useless worksheets that nobody cares for(on top of iclickers) when she could be showing us some live coding during that time instead. Idk how she hasn't been fired yet considering how many complaints she gets. Also, I bet she's the one disliking all the bad reviews on here lol.

Holy moly actually a brick wall. She is so stubborn on the rules she set in the class. She leaked LOA from a student. Avg was a 50% on midterm 2 and she decided not to curve it? Expect a homework, project and a midterm due back-to-back in the same week.

Sure, the content and the way it was taught was fine. However, what these positive reviews don't seem to realize is that students would like to be treated with respect and dignity.

Good lecturer but awful management. Nightmarish autograder, refusal to show all test case results, putting in stuff (not in slides) to projects and homework, inaccessible online office hours, leaked student info, and inconsistent deadlines. Worst professor ever by far. Turned an easy A/B course to a nightmare. I failed this course because of her.

Lost 20 points on a hidden test case on a project which was impossible to test all possibilities (would've had to test 10000+ instances of a GUI graph to catch it). There are too many more complaints to even list here. It is insane that uic still allows her to teach. Hopefully the new cs department head takes action against professors like her.
