Tests difficult, but she is willing to help, and does have a sense of humor
if she doesn't talk about it in class, expect on exams!1/2 the class failed final
Always complaining, never helping. Heaven forbid she HELP students!
Very funny, and laid back

BAD attitude. Who does she think she is? Obviously a crappy professor.

awesome job

Presents material very poorly, her sense of humor is strange, and she is crazy
Talks nonstop about ice dancing. Doesn't teach well. Tests and quizzes are hard.
The class is hard, but for Chem, she's a cool teacher
cares too much about herself and not the class or students
Intentions are good, but her teaching method needs work... Tests are hard.
need to go to class and get her notes, quizes and tests fairly easy
Prof. Siu is very helpful, easy to talk to, and understanding.
Definitely crazy! But she knows her chem. If you took chem in high, easy class

She sucks if you have a Xbox stay home and play it your better off.
Very bad instructor, avoid her at all costs. Annoying, and can't teach very good
Very helpful.

if you had chm in HS easy, but very unorganized, not so good
i asked for help and she said "I don't know what to tell you, I don't know"
exams HARD! quizes not too bad, funny but rude at times
no clue in the class, but easy on the grading, couldn't help if we had questions
She is SO rude! Won't answer ?s, will just laugh at your ?s! MEAN!
Unclear, babbles, tests are confusing. Get out now.
Awesome prof. Made material seem easy if you study it. Quizzes help grade.
Please people get out. She is very rude...Xbox will treat you better.
Confusing, I don't recommend her. DISREGARD THE LOSER THAT PRAISED HER!!!!!!!!!
Great prof. Fair. Good exams. Helps you if you just ask!
INCREDIBELY RUDE, HORRIBLE TEACHER, DROP THE CLASS OR SETTLE WITH A D!!!!!!
One word...SUCKS!!!
Incredibly out of touch with the students. Pretty easy.
Not nearly as horrendous as people say. A bit eccentric. Not really rude.
Helpful during office hours, kind of babbles, goes of on tangents
Take this class if you want to know about Hong Kong or international toilets :)
Really nice. Always willing to answer any questions. A littlt batty.

rude to students, doesn't help, gets annoyed when you ask questions,
Boring. Doesn't explain well. Goes through notes on overhead. Find a better prof
a bit different, but she will help you a lot if you ask for it

Good Prof. Everyone that said bad things about her is obviously lazy
as easy as they come
If you want an A or B...DON'T take this class!! No one gets A's!!
awful to work with, refuses to help, very against students

She is pretty blunt so don't take her wrong. She does help if you need it and is a nice person. One of the better lab profs I have had. Explains things well and will explain things if you don't understand....but won't do everything for you.
nice lady but extremely boring class - tests seem easy but are tricky, find a different gen ed prof to take!
The class is pretty easy but this lady doesn't know how to organize a test for the life of her.Makes it hard to pass. Also, don't buy the book.I paid $90 for mine and never opened it once, just took notes from an overhead, took the book back and got $27.
The labs can be confusing but she helped make them easier to understand. Was always helpful when didn't understand the lab or how to complete the lab report. Go to her office hours and she is more willing to help and answer questions.
Horrible grader! Marks points off for extremely small errors!
She is unfair to the students who do not know chem. If you have only taken chem in high school do not take her, because she assumes that you know it. VERY BORING, and DRY SENSE OF HUMOR.
not sympathetic to you if you don't understand something, took chem in HS and still made me feel like i didn't know a thing, don't buy the book because it's $90 and i never used it, dry humor, tests are not organized, questions worded so can't understand
Ultra Smart! Lucky to get her for class! Explains all VERY well! Nice lady. Dry, but funny sence of humor. Study to get an A!

Makes you feel stupid. Gets your hopes up when you do well on her quizes and then her tests are hard as hell.
snaps at you if you ask questions...very dry sense of humor...tests are worded so you can understand them, she likes trick questions
Snaps at you if you ask questions and goes super fast explaining very complicated topics.
she is a good teacher and she makes it a little fun but it's just pretty hard
She is horrible in the morning. Count how many times she says "these guys", it is a lot!!! Quizzes are super easy, but you will fail the tests, she even tells you that you will- nice lady huh?
Lab instructor. RUDE!! Turned her back and ignored me when I went to her office to ask a question. Marks off for INSIPID things, and gives extra credit for equally stupid stuff. Try to avoid.
tests are very difficult to follow. she tells you that they are extremly hard and will proably fail it. most fo the people in this class have Ds. scary to go to for help.
She goes really fast through hard topics, quizzes are super easy but tests are impossible, doesn't like to answer questions
Overall she is a good professor, the only thing is that it her tests seem very hard even if you study. You think you got an A but when you see your grade it's way lower than you expected.
She has a very dry sense of humor. The quizzes are usually pretty easy, but the tests are extremely hard, even if you study. You think you do ok, and you get the test back with a lower grade than you thought you would've gotten. Switch out if possible!!!
IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE THEN RUN! I learned a lot but still failed her exams. Did great on quizzes but not exams... She freely admits that she puts "trick questions" on them. RUN NOW!
Do not take her lab, grades WAY harder than ANY other professor, I promise. Takes off points for really dumb things, lab may even bring your grade down because of her
not fun in the morning...gives good practice problems, and quizzes are RELATIVELY easy, but EXAMS ARE HARD! avoid this teacher if possible...
She thinks that because she knows everything, we should also.
Not a good professor. Drop her if you can. Her tests are very hard. She trys to trick you and fail you. Quizzes are okay but the tests are terrible. Run, Run as fast as you can!
She is the devil.... find another teacher fast her main goal in life is to fail you... be afraid, be very afraid!
Umm..........RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She doesn't make very accurate practice tests to study from, which make it very difficult to know what to expect on her exams. The quizzes are usually quite easy though. But overall I wouldn't recommend taking her.
She scared the crap out of me as a incoming freshman. Talk about scaring everyone off. I didnt even want to ask any questions cause she would bit my head off. AND get used to it..she does wear the bun and scrunchie every single day. get outta this clas
SOO difficult! Very rude when you ask her a question too. Weird policy when it comes to exams...Exams are IMPOSSIBLE! Just find another prof. to take this course with!
Professor Siu can be a hard read but she really does care about her students. Requests for help will be answered but don't expect much help if you're rude.
No, No, NO!!! Lab instructor: Very poor. A rude boor of a woman; actually turned her back on me when i went to her office for help the first week of the sem. I KNEW I was in trouble then. Marks off for RIDICULOUS crap!
I had a great experience with Prof. Siu. She was very clear, friendly, helpful and always answers her email very quickly. She is a tough grader, but listen to her instructions and you will do fine.
not a fan of her teaching style
One word...HORRIBLE! I have never had a professor make me feel as stupid as she did. She is very rude when you ask her questions and she expects you to know everything she does. Also a hard grader!
Dont take her! She's terrible. If dont want feel stupid and be embarrassed then dont take her! Very rude and has a real bad temper! Acts very immature for an adult. If she treats you bad stand up for yourself or she will squash you like a bug!
Everyone who says she makes you feel dumb is correct. She doesn't really teach it as an introductory course. I had a really hard time with the class but had a very good background in Chem...there are plenty of better Chem teachers out there!!
Dont take her she's terrible! Half of the class dropped because of her inconsideration and lack of respect! She teaches information that you dont even need to know in 300 level chem classes. Rude and very disrecpectful!
I took Prof. Siu last semester, I would NOT recommend her at all. She is very very rude, and she talks about judging ice skating WAAY too much. RUN AWAY!
This woman is terrible, she won't help you and makes you feel stupid when you ask. All she cares about is getting out of the lab on time and whether you're done or not is not important to her.
AWFUL PROFESSOR! She thinks she knows everything & is VERY UNWILLING to ever help! Teaches Far above the 109 level! Expects you to already know what shes talking about before she explains it! Get out before you get stuck! I wish i would have!
Everything everyone says is True! Dont get stuck in her class!! She is the rudest, inconsiderate, selfish, immature, teacher ever!!! She teaches 109 as if it was a 300 level class. Dont pay lots of money to get stuck with a teacher like this! GET OUT!
I had her for lab and she was always very helpful. A bit nit-picky about grading but is clear about what she expects.
Get out of the class ASAP. She is one of the worst teacher, she is a **** about everything. Bad teacher, test are impossible, i studied for 4 day and 8 hrs before the test and only got a 63. For some reason at 300lbs. she thinks she's a figure skater.
She sucks! RUN AWAY!
This prof will ruin your GPA...I went to her outside of class a couple times and she made me feel like an idiot for doing it. If you miss one of your tests she counts the final worth double, this is what screwed me over. DON'T TAKE HER!!
She is by far the least helpful teacher I have ever had, and taking her class was the single worst learning experience of my life. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS OR LAB.
This prof makes me throw up a little! Don't take her class.
I like her. Everything she teaches, she plans out and takes the time to do overheads for everything. She teaches at a nice pace and gives tons of examples! I approached her with a question after class and she was delighted that I had asked.
Interesting .. just not clear
Always made class enjoyable. Quirky sense of humour, but defintely lifts the mood in class. Always has cool things to incorporate. Take her if you have the chance. If you're just going to be LAZY and NEGATIVE, you'll think every prof. is horrible...
This lady is really nice and sweet but dumb as a box of rocks. She really shouldn't teach. I had a split semester with her and carlson and my grades dropped on her half. really unclear. otherwise nice lady.
She was amazing. The best prof I have ever had. If you don't like her it is just because you put in no effort and get a bad grade. She is willing to help and very clear. You do have to study. We are in college. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN! Dont make the mistake of taking her.
If you liked this teacher, it is because you are a suck up. She is a horrible prof, scares you off about asking questions, gets upset. Tests are too difficult for a 100 course.
Sui is an amazing lecture prof. Her lectures are very interesting and seem to go fast. Her notes are spelled out for you and her exams read directly from lecture notes.
I definitely do not suck up to her, and I think she's an amazin' teacher...You will learn a lot and have fun.
RUN...RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!
Awful for a lab prof. She makes you feel very stupid for asking questions. Run as fast as you can! She doesn't grade clear one lab you'll get a good grade then the next you get a F. Run and get a new teacher. You won't learn anything from her or do good.
Siu is okay at teaching lab but an extremely difficult grader. She is nit-picky and claims this is to help you learn to "keep records." Really, though, it's to help her ego think her job is important.
This teacher was good overall. She was almost always clear. She is a little corny at times but always sooo nice to the students. Take this class.
easy class if you pay attention. shes willing to help if you go to her. if you miss class hard to catch up if you dont get the notes.
she was alright I managed a c+ in her lecture but did not have her for lab, (which I did considerably better in) If you have never really had a chem class in your life then take her if not move on to a different chem class.
Good lab prof. She does grade tough but if you get on her good side you'll be all set. Nice lady.
She explains the lab okay, but is a VERY picky grader. Takes points off that other professors do not. The only way to get on her "good" side is if you are an ice skater.
This professor made me feel extremely stupid when I asked questions and I would not recommend her to anyone.
I enjoyed the teaching style (i.e. overhead notes). She wasn't very clear on her answers to student's questions, which made it hard. I did enjoy it when she played The Doors in class. Otherwise, just do OWL, do well in lab, and STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!
Class can be hard, depending on topic. She is not very clear when it comes to answering questions from students. Knows chem well, but can't get the ideas across to students very good. Tests are hard, espicially final. Do OWL, read the book, and don't skip class too much. It is hard to catch up.
This lady is unbelievable! Cant believe Grand Valley would hire someone like this. She doesnt care about students. She has major control issues. We dont need highschool teachers teaching at the college level!!
so hard
Two words: Control freak! If you want to pay big bucks to have a women treat you like a middle school student who has no respect for anyone then stay in her class but i suggest running and run fast!!!!
This class is difficult...If you arent interested in learning chemistry...get out before its too late!! If you have prior chem knowledge you can do alright...if not you will struggle...She makes the exam and quiz questions tricky so if you dont fully understand everything...the exam and quizes are easy to fail...I'm struggling even with a tutor
i liked her, shes fun and class is never boring, she gives fair warning that the material is hard at the begining of the semester, go to class or you'll get behind, tests and quizes are a little difficult, work hard in the begining cause it just gets harder as the class goes on, all in all be willing to study alot and you should do fine
No Comments
She was adequately helpful during chemistry labs and is easy to talk to.
I thought that she was a great teacher! Tests wernt that hard and she was VERY VERY helpful always giving good examples! I liked her and would take her class again!
I really liked her teaching style and although I thought it was a bit middle-school at times, she was pretty clear. I heard a lot of students say that they thought she was mean and difficult to understand, but as long as you study and do OWL, and ASK QUESTIONS IN DISCUSSION, you will be fine.
Has a strange obsession with colors. Gets really excited for the bright/pretty colors you get during different experiments. Makes you feel stupid for going to her office hours and asking a question about the lab. I'd try to avoid her if possible.
She gets really annoyiong talking about figure skating, but she is not that bad. The class is pretty easy.
she's not exactly the best teacher. if you haven't had chemistry before, or if the concept of chemistry is unclear to you, i would not pick Professor Siu. Bottom line, she's a good person, but not the best teacher.
easy class. just do owl and show up. study notes, don't have to read.
She is very nice but I agree that she does make you feel stupid if you come to her office with a question that you just don't understand. I found myself just telling her I got it know because she wasn't really helping me to get to the answer.
I have her for lab and although I like chem I thought she was kind of rude to students that did not understand the lab. I went to her office to asked a general question about the lab and told me to go look it up. I did, got my report back she wrote on it "Why didn't you ask me" duh
Ok person, not the best professor.
For the serious student,Siu is not the epitomy of a instructor who will encourage students to learn, she is not helpful in lab, or office hours. Behavior is condescing, unprofessional, biased and unfair, inappropriate and her classroom is not conducive to learning and understanding CHM 232. It would be to your advantage to drop her course!
Nice person if you aren't talkin Chem. Sort of willing to help only if you ask the right questions. Tough grader. She was much easier in 109!
awful teacher, explains thinks like****. Had to get a tutor who was more helpful than her! worse class ever!
horrible prof! any other professor would be better than her.
Personality wise, Siu is quite mean. She is intimidating to ask quesitons to. But overall, the class is quite easy. I never took chem in high school, and I got an A. As long as you do all of your OWL, you can get a decent grade. She teaches pretty well. Just don't ask her anything, she'll bite your head off. Same differoni?
Terrible professor. Exams were poorly written, entire lecture periods were spent doing examples on overheads. I learned more from the online homework (OWL) than lecture. She cannot keep control of the classroom. Discussion consists of a quiz which takes 10-15 minutes. If you want to know about figure skating, take this class.
Overall, she's a fun/perky person, but don't ask her questions!! She is very intimidating and her lectures don't help you. It's a pretty tough class with her...I don't learn much from her...I end up teaching myself
Mrs. Siu is awful. She does not like students who asks questions and when you do, she treats you like you are an idiot. The lab is incredibly hard and she doesn't make it any easier. I would NOT recommend her.
Prof Sui was alright, i'll agree that she is in fact intimidating if you ask questions. Does make you feel dumb if she thinks the question is dumb. tests were difficult bc i felt she didnt explain the material thoroughly so i basically taught myself.
If you can get out of her class, do so! You will learn nothing in this class from her. She does not explain things well at all and I was stuck trying to teach myself chemistry the whole semester. She is lazy about explaining and our class was constantly correcting her on her work. She doesn't care about her students succeeding at all.
I probably wouldn't recommend buying the book for this course. Also, showing up to lecture is important, but try not to ask questions because she will subtly make you look like an idiot and then hesitate to answer your question.
Ok, I'm not sure what all of these other people are talking about. Siu is probably the best professor I've had at Grand Valley in the 2.5 years that I've been here. The class is not a blow off...she does expect you to work for your grades (which apparently is too much for people) but not undoable. Lectures are VERY important, but TAKE SIU!
so i heard this was going to be a hard class w/ her and i got a tutor. well i leaned more from the tutor then her so i just quit going to class didnt tell my tutor and had her teach me lol. i had the tutor help (do) my OWl and i ended up w/ a C+ in the class. and well im NOT smart
I can't believe so many people complained about 109! If 109 is that hard just wait until biochem! She's picky, and the labs are going to be hard, but I wrote my labs next to her office and just asked questions when I had them, and I did great. She helps a lot more after class, just be specific with units, and there won't be a problem.
Horrible teacher, likes to make one feel stupid for asking questions, unless they are about her. Seemed to have little interest in helping her students do well in class, many others stated she makes you feel like you're bothering her when you need help. Run away if she is your instructor, or wait until you can get someone else.
woudlnt take her unless you had to. barrows is much better. makes you feel stupid if you ask questions in lecture. somewhat fast with notes. dont bother with the book. go to lecture... OWL questions are awful & she puts questions on tests to purposely trick you. really hard work will get you a C.
She's a good prof if you have taken and understand most chemistry prior to the class. Test and quizzes are extremely tricky, careful. Lectures are pointless but discussions are a must. She's fun and talks a lot of drugs and food during class. oh, and she's an international ice skating judge...the one thing i can for sure remember from that class.
I really like Professor Siu. She really loves chemistry and explained things well. I hate chemistry and I didn't think the class was that bad. She gives you chances to earn some points so not everything is based off of tests and quizzes.
She is a wonderful professor, yes she is slightly demanding but she is very down to earth and if you need help with anything she is more than willing to helo you out. Also she caters a lot to grades dropping worst 3 quizzes, giving 5 points onto every exam, things like that. Overall great prof!
Had her as a lab instructor. As a teacher, she grades fairly, but can be demanding and is not afraid to say if she thought you did a poor job. As a person, she's a nice lady with a sense of humor.
Usually I try to find something I like about every prof, but I honestly can't say that for Mrs. Siu. She gets mad at you for asking questions, and she grades very particularly. I don't know if she just didn't like me, but I was always afraid to ask her questions because she would roll her eyes and sigh loudly. Very unprofessional and rude.
Siu does make you look stupid for asking questions. Dont miss class because chemistry builds and if you do not understand something, it will screw you up. I liked the way the class was taught and she's a good person, just needs to learn to be respectful. Does talk about skating a lot though. Nice lady I'd recommend her, but that's just me.
Gets irritated by students with questions. Gets irritated by students who question her accuracy. Makes frequent errors and has difficulty owning up to it. Explains material fairly well, but don't ask her to repeat herself, her answer will border on humiliation. She should stick to judging figure skating.
Good teacher, however does make a lot of mistakes which gets a little confusing. Show up and pay attention and you will do fine. Annoying thing...she says eww a lot.
Ms Siu isa very helpful professor and is always open to questions and clarifications. This is a great class to take if you are looking for a class that inspires understanding.
As a teacher Mrs. S is pretty good. I understood what she was talking about most of the time. As a person there is not one thing I like about this woman.
Overall she was a decent teacher and I learned a lot from the class. If you atttend lecture on a regular basis, and ask questions if you need help, you should do fine. Tests aren't bad if you pay attention in lecture. The online notes she posts on Blackboard are very helpful.
Prof. Siu is one of the best chem teachers. She takes things at a slow speed and is very willing to answer questions. She also puts concepts into subjects that real people understand like food and such. I would def. recommend her!!
She was a good teacher and taught things at a slow speed. Good to take if you didnt have a lot of chem in high school
I dont know what everyone else was thinking, but she is such a poor teacher. I mean her work is not that hard, but she is so arrogant. She's willing to help you, but she is very sarcastic towards people when they ask questions...I wouldn't recommend her. And she rushes through everything making it hard to learn and keep up.
Funny teacher and kinda sarcastic. She gives u a lot of examples to help you if u don't understand. Tests are short and hard so study. She does offer pts back fro test corrections tho. Good teacher
She was a TERRIBLE prof. I was very good at CHM in highschool, but after taking her class i CHANGED majors. I LOVED chm in highschool, she was tricky, sarcastic and rude. She did not care about the students at all. I dreaded her class every day! GET AWAY!! Take another prof and i'm sure you will get a better grade.
She is the worst prof ever. Plain and simple. The class was very hard and she hates it when you ask questions.
Terrible professor. She has absolutely NO respect for her students and is extremely arrogant. If you disagree with her about something she will publicly try to make you feel stupid. She also takes off points on lab write-ups for very insignificant things. And she hates answering questions. I do not recommend taking her.
I really enjoyed her. She's silly but I thought she did a great job explaining things.
Her exam questions were fair. At the beginning of class she does some housekeeping to make sure that everyone knows if there is an exam coming up. I really liked her as a prof, and she was cheery during class. It is true though that she isn't the best at answering questions, but in my experience, the questions were things that she just said.
Was quite the terrible teacher. She was never thorough with any of the material in class, then the exams covered material that was much tougher than what was taught. I loved chemistry in high school, but have come to hate it because of her.
HORRIBLE!! I only had her as a lab prof, and she made you feel as dumb as a box of rocks for asking a simple questoin for clarification. She accuses students of cheating with out the knowladge of them actually doing so, and she is EXTREAMLY rude.
AWFUL! Lecture is boring, she is extremely rude when you ask her questions and her test questions are impossible! It doesn't matter how much you study, she purposely tricks you with test questions ITS CHEM 109 GIVE US A BREAK! Don't take Siu's Class!!
She is an AWFUL teacher. She hasn't taught orgo or biochem in 6 years and she likes to remind us that every class. Her quizzes are really hard and she is terrible at explaining why things are. READ THE BOOK! Itll be your saving grace. Exams arent too bad though, that's what keep you sane.
She's one of the rudest profs and very unprofessional! She allows personal issues to interfere with grading labs and professional work. Also don't ask her any questions in less you want to feel completely degraded! I have to retake the class just because of her lab!!
I expected to go into this class failing but ended up with an A. Sometimes prof. Siu is unclear but when you ask her to go over it again she is usually more than happy to. Do practice problems in the book before tests and quizzes and you will do fine.
She is unclear usually but if you ask her to go over something again she is almost always more than happy. its easy especially if you took chem in high school. The class is not that difficult if you put work in. do practice problems in the book before tests and quizzes and you will get an A/B
Very good teacher. She is very clear at explaining things. I would 100% recommend her if you have never taken chemistry before. She is really helpful if you don't understand things. Try not to prove her wrong, or else you'll get on her bad side. Easy A. Straight forward tests.
this prof is soo rude, its unbelievable. i have never in my life had a professor that deliberately made students feel soo stupid when they asked questions! she raises her voice and makes sure the whole class can hear her basically telling students with questions how stupid they are. i would NEVER reccomend her. she is just plain MEAN and RUDE.
She is the most rude teacher i've ever had. makes students feel incredibly stupid when they ask questions. yells at students. she is just plain MEAN. i felt worthless everytime i left her class because she would make everyone feel soo dumb for asking questestions and makes sure the entire class hears how dumb their questions are. she is sooo RUDE!
She only gets a little mad when people are being disrespectful or not paying attention. She was a big help to me when something was confusing but the only downside was that some of it would then get marked down anyway so my labs didn't have very high grades.
I would not recommend her. She doesn't spend alot of time going through the harder material of the notes and moves from topic to topic without waiting for students to catch up. She is also quite rude and disrespectful towards students. If you need help, wait until after class to ask her otherwise she won't be helpful at all.
Fair. That is how I would sum up Prof. Shi. I took her my second time taking CHM 109 and I enjoyed her class a lot more. If you learn by copying things down her lecture is for you. If you attend class you don't really need the book. I would recommend taking her.
This professor is extremely rude. She is fine until you ask her a question or point out a mistake she made. She does not like to admit she was wrong and she will make you feel like crap if you ask a question. AVOID if you can.
Siu is sarcastic, but that makes the learning environment fun. She made things fairly easy during lectures. She provided plenty of examples and was always willing to answer questions. Really cared that we really learned the material.
She is kind of funny and I generally liked her. She isn't the most pleasant when asking her questions, but I don't think she was in any way horrible. She seems to work slower than the other classes which is good, and her quizzes and tests weren't particularly difficult.
Professor Siu is eccentric at times, and even spouts random phrases in Cantonese, but she is fun, adding more to the educational experience. She does have a habit of answering questions with a "because it is, duh!" sort of attitude. Overall, it's a relatively easy course, just don't expect to feel too comfortable asking some questions...
She is a great prof. She cracks jokes every now and then and is very sarcastic and funny. She adjusts to all kinds of learning so sometimes she will teach with just notes and others she will provide pictures and examples. Her quizzes and tests are a little tricky, but if you study her notes sheet you should be fine.
Mrs. Siu is a great prof. She gives a lot of examples in lecture. She can be kind of sarcastic if you ask questions during lecture so I would advise asking questions during discussion or outside of class. Other than that she makes the class bearable.
She is very nice and willing to help whenever you ask her a question. She reviews a little bit at the beginning of each lecture but other than that, moves through everything really fast. I found her tests to be extremely difficult, but her quizzes and worksheets are quite easy. Going to the discussion helps too.
She is a very stubborn women and does not like to admit when she is wrong. Also can come off very rude when answering questions from students. However material is not too hard but her tests have very obscure questions.
Very nice lady. Worksheets and quizzes are fairly easy. The questions on her tests were somewhat confusing though. As long as you know the material then you should be fine.
She is a great professor, and she gives really great examples that make understanding the material easy. I never opened my book, but I attended every lecture. If you go to class, pay attention, and take good notes, you will do well.
Mrs. Siu is a good professor in her own way. She's good at teaching the material, she's helpful, and gives you other things to help your grade besides just tests and quizzes! Her tests/quizzes are tough, but the notes she gives you help a lot and going to her office hours. Just don't get on her bad side, or ask dumb questions.Think before you speak!
Fairly good teacher, but her quizzes and tests are extremely difficult. Quiz questions are graded right or wrong so if you forget one little thing in your answer, wrong. Her tests are like a logic game and she says may the best person win. Looking at other professor tests, hers r the hardest and you could complete them correctly if u had more time
I have never had such an awful experience with a professor. This was my first semester of college and she has made me hate chemistry. Not clear, very rude to students, and the tests are way more difficult than they need to be. DO NOT take her class.
Her exams are very complicated to most people....Multiple choice multiple answer.....doesn't make much sense. Has a terrible sense of humor. Differoni...
If you have the choice, I'd avoid taking her. It's like pulling teeth to get her to answer your question instead of a "because it is" brush off. Her exams are really hard and makes it more about how well you know how to take tests instead of how well you know the material.
Upon going to her office hours, I was treated like an idiot and it made me seek help from different professors. But yet, in discussion, she's helpful. I've heard if you suck up to her, she treats you better but personally, I don't care about figure skating or Hong Kong (her major conversation points). I'd avoid her... I certainly am.
I would avoid her at all costs. She makes the most confusing tests, and is probably one of the worst "teachers" I've ever had. Terrible prof.
Avoid her shes not a good prof. Makes people feel dumb when they ask questions, goes too fast through notes. Worst of all is she is terrible at writing test questions.
She was an awful professor. She was very unhelpful. I put so many hours into study and it didn't pay off. She was very condescending and disrespectful. Worst professor I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is not nice when you ask her questions. She gives you a dumb look and half the time doesn't answer the question. She talks about her experiences a LOT. Her tests aren't too bad but the final was hard. She also hardly ever notices if you raise your and for a question even when she asks if there are any questions!
She is very sarcastic and condecending. She gets off topic a lot. I recommend switching to a different professor if possible.
still uses the overhead projector and notes are not clear at all. They never match up with the "skeleton" notes she has us print. Steer clear of Prof. Siu for lecture, discussion, and lab.
First don't buy the book for you wont use it. Second she is literally the worst professor, she doesn't realize that everybody doesn't already know chemistry, I am a straight A student and barely passed with a C. She is extremely rude, she has no understanding for the students and cares more about her life than the class & she gets off track a lot.
This is the thing, if you already have a very good understanding of chemistry she probably would not be a bad professor. But if you do NOT know much about chemistry, do NOT take her class. She expects you to learn material over night and is very hard to learn from. She expects you to already know what is going on.
I used to hate chem, but I really enjoyed her class. You have to pay attention during her lectures, and you really can't miss any of them, but she's always open to questions and will always clarify. She's really nice and understanding. I know a lot of people think she's confusing, but I honestly don't they're following along during lecture.
Mrs. Siu was an awful professor. She acted like students were stupid when they asked questions, and was rude. She posts all of the notes on Blackboard so it's really not necessary to go to lecture because she just repeats herself. It's not hard to learn, I got by with an A- only paying attention in a few lectures. Do all of your OWL!!!
She is not very approachable. I went to her for help and she made me feel stupid so I requested a tutor. Tutoring helped a lot more. I suggest not to take CHM 109 with her.
Very hard class. She moves at a very past pace and doesnt slow down. I was scared to ask her questions because of her rude responses. Do not take CHM 109 with her. If you do, sign up for a tutor the very first week. Class may make you rethink a major in science field! DO NOT TAKE AS GEN ED!!
So much information packed into the class and she just keeps going without explaining much or clearing up confusion, when you ask to go over something in the past she says we're past it and to look over it on your own. Never ever used the book so don't bother buying it. Wouldn't recommend taking this professor
I had P.Siu for lecture, lab, & discussion. Her lecture moves quickly & the notes don't relate to the tests. You don't need the book, unless you want to do practice problems. Labs are easy & so is discussion. In discussion you have a quiz every other week too, be prepared. She is very help, and is more than willing to help during her office hours.
Worst Professor I had at GVSU. Her test do not relate to the test, she is not easy to talk to or ask questions. She will make you feel dumb. I would never recommend her to anyone.
Super easy class and she presents the material very clearly. Couldn't have asked for a better professor. If you are not willing to put forth the effort to get your assignments done, take notes, or study then you should not plan on doing well in this class. Not a class for lazy people, but if you put in the effort then it is a for sure easy A.
I had Professor Siu for my chem lab and she was the most helpful lab professor I have ever had! I can't speak for her lectures, but she was always very clear and helpful in the lab.
I would only recommend Prof. Siu if you have prior chemistry experience. She covers a lot of content and it's not that in depth, but doesn't do a great job of explaining the "why" of chemistry so you'll need to figure that out on your own. Her lectures and discussions are pretty laid back which was nice, and she'll answer your questions if you ask.
Terrible professor. Her lectures are pretty vague and fast-paced, and makes you feel dumb if you try and ask a question. The only good thing was she gave a decent amount of extra credit opportunities. I would not recommend!!
Mrs. Siu was a great Lab instructor and is more than happy to help or clarify anything. Easy to ask questions too. I enjoyed her and would recommend.
Lectures aren't boring but SUPER fast, I'd recommend recording them or something. She has notes online but I never found them helpful. Drops lowest 2 quiz grades. You MUST go to the discussion if you have one. Online hw due every other Sunday, it's difficult but a grade buffer. Would not recommend.
She talks really fast and her tests are hard! She's very helpful and approachable! I enjoyed her class!
Professor Siu was very good and I easily got an A. It may have been because I took Chemistry previously in high school, but overall, CHM 109 is a fairly easy class to get an A. She lets you drop your 2 lowest quizes and lets you do test corrections giving you extra credit on every test. Lectures are boring but chemistry isn't that exciting overall.
She is very helpful and gives you great tips on remembering the more confusing topics! I thought she was very helpful and an overall good prof.
terrible teacher. avoid at all cost. No help. Passed with a C+ but basically taught myself.
She is an awesome professor. Siu is a very good teacher.
Siu spends most of lecture going off on a tangent, then rushes through the info. When you ask for help in person or email she treats you like you're an idiot. Skips over way too much instruction constantly saying "you already should know this." I'm always left confused and like I missed something. Would not take her if you want to actually do well.
She;s not a tough teacher to pass the class with. I had her for lab, and lab is mostly easy to pass, but whenever I went up to ask a question, I felt like I was insulting her, or as if the question should be something that I already know. Not my favorite professor.
I actually really enjoyed Siu's class. She is like a sweet Grandma and she's very goofy. There are times where she isn't very clear, but if you ask for help she is happy to help you.
Siu was such a great teacher and made me love chemistry. I made sure I took her for bio organic chem as well! She is there to help and you can always ask her questions. There are a lot of points you can get back to recover if you had a bad test. If you have to take either of these classes, trust me take her!!
I took Siu for intro and org chem and while the material is difficult, it is possible to pass. She offers a ton of points in the class so if you don't do well on exams, the homework, lab, and classroom will bring your grade up. My problem with her is that she expects you to already know the info and if you ask a question she makes you feel dumb
Overall CHM 109 is a pretty easy class. Siu does a decent job at presenting material, but beware of asking her questions. She tends to make students feel stupid for even having to ask a question.
Chem 109 is easy, but not with Siu. I had to teach myself everything from the textbook. She bounces all over the place, and then hurries to finish. If you do want her to slow down or clarify, she'll respond with a snark comment and act like it's a chore. Don't take Siu and make this harder than it needs to be.
She makes tricky questions. shes been teaching this course for a while so if you have anything to say shes heard it and answered it probably 100 times, hence why she always sounds annoyed. I think I hate chem 109 because of the course but she didnt make it any easier to like. shes not the worst but shes not the best. Also super into figure skating.
She comes off rude and does not take the time to become personally acquainted with students. Clear cut teacher, however not very friendly and would give answers with no explanation.
I didn't find her to be rude like everyone else said, she is quite nice. However, I feel like she didn't explain the concepts in depth enough for the tests. Sometimes went on unnecessary tangents. The class average on the final was 70%, which I think is reflected in her teaching quality. Not the worst, but I would recommend taking another professor
I didn't think Siu was as rude as most thought, I believe that was just her humor. Although, she didn't like explaining answers to questions students had and I wasn't very fond of her teaching skills. Her hand written notes were always sloppy and she would fly through them before you had the chance to write them all down.
I love Ellen Siu. She has a sarcastic sense of humor, which I love, and get her alone and she's amazing. Really enjoyed her all semester.
Stay away from this professor! She expects all students to be familiar with certain criteria from past chem courses, and makes you feel really dumb in front of anyone present. She is very rude when you say or do something wrong, even if it's a mistake. She rushes everyone through the lab, though we all paid to be there for the entire period.
Professor Siu gets sidetracked often and spends too much time on the much easier material such as Sig Figs and blows through the harder material such as Net Ionic Equations. She still uses the overhead projectors with plastic sheets and has a snarky attitude when students ask clarifying questions that she deems as something we should already know.
Tough grader. Not very considerate of questions during discussion. I wouldn't say the lectures are very great. I've had to teach myself chem through online resources.
Very hard class. Not a good lecturer. Makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Her tests are hard and you have to go to lecture to pass the class. Did not use my book at all, the online homework is somewhat difficult. She doesn't care if you pass or not.
Siu was a great professor. She was always willing to give help where it was needed. She tends to be pretty sarcastic, but overall a great professor. She made it clear what she expected, and what work you had to put in.
Get out while you can. You will not pass unless you put in a crazy amount of extra time on your own. Her lectures are vague and she moves very quickly and doesn't give you a chance to figure out problems on your own. Tutoring is the only thing that got me through this semester.
Ellen Siu is very old school. She does not post grades on blackboard. She makes a spreadsheet of the grades for you. She uses an overhead machine in for her lectures. She is open to questions during class. Overall I enjoyed her class. She gets sidetracked sometimes but snaps back into it quickly.
Siu does not care whether you pass or not. She is very sarcastic and rude when you ask questions. She makes you not want to participate in class and makes you very discouraged. She is very picky when she grades quizzes. For example, she marked me down for not having the word "it's" in one of my answers. Would not recommend.
Be prepared to take notes at lighting speed from an overhead projector *SHUDDER* All stuff you probably should have learned in your high school chemistry classes but have totally forgot about. Don't mess around in lecture or you will get called out and it's terrifying. She can be funny too, but also has a mean side. Stay on the good side!
Siu was a good professor, her class just sucks. Lecture attendance not mandatory but it's best if you go unless you're good at chemistry. 4 exams, plus all of the work in discussion outside of lecture. Definitely a hard class.
Avoid Siu at all cost. Worst professor I have ever had. Terrible at explaining what to do. Grades extremely hard. When you go to talk to her about why you got points off she can't even explain the material herself and basically just tells you it's not right.
Professor Siu will review material in the beginning of each class and is happy to answer any questions. She does tend to get off track and talk about random things, but I find it to be a nice break from the lecture. If you are talking loudly during lecture, she will call you out, so respect her at all times. Overall, a good teacher to learn from.
I hate chemistry but I thought she was a fairly solid professor. The class itself is mostly things that you learned in high school, so you'll think that you can skip classes but you probably shouldn't in order to do well. Not as east as you think. She reviews before class which is very helpful and is open to questions.
She knows what she's teaching so well that it makes her come off snarky sometimes. She is very helpful and approachable for questions. Do all OWL assignments, she gives a ton of extra credit for them
I had her for chem 109 and 230. I like her, I think she is very nice and is a good teacher. You get to write anything you want on a flash card for the final exam. She does quizzes and worksheets and drops you're lower ones. I had some bad grades here and there but still ended with an A.
Professor Siu was a decent Chemistry professor but she is very fast paced and not very technologically savvy. Her lectures are done on a projector with wet erase markers, and she does not post all of the lectures online. It isn't a hard class to pass, but in order to understand the concepts, you have to put in a lot of work and studying.
The class is very difficult and she expects you know every single detail. Lectures are very fast paced and I just ended up having to re-teach myself everything.
Mrs. Siu isn't tech savvy at all, and still uses an overhead projector. She doesn't post anything online, which makes your grade hard to access. She's a solid professor, she knows what she's talking about, but talks very fast, and it's hard to keep up with her. Also if you ask her a question there's a chance she will talk down to you.
Shes a good teacher and knows whats shes talking about. The downside is that she lectures very fast and often has a hard time understanding the questions you ask and answers something unrelated to the question. If you show up to class and do the online quizes you should be fine. Also if she knows your face shes much more likely to help you out
I'm choosing to take CHM 230 with her. I appreciate her teaching style.
Siu definitely is a very sweet lady and I really do feel like I learn from her. You do have to pay attention in lecture and she gives a decent amount of credit back on tests. Do all the OWL questions! You get extra credit at the end of the semester. Her style is old fashioned and it's chemistry so it's pretty hard. GET A TUTOR, they save lives
She's mediocre at best. She expects to you know the material thoroughly, yet some of the material wasn't covered in class or taught well. I learned the material by doing the OWL assignments, not from class! On the bright side, she can help boost your grade like extra credit, eliminate 2 worksheets and quizzes, and a cheat sheet for the final.
I feel like I learned a lot from this class. With it being an already hard class, the examples she gave were useful and I don't think her rating should be this low. You can get 5% extra credit after all of your tests, EC from online hw assignments, and a note card on the final. I can see where she can be condescending, but it isn't too common.
Prof. Siu is a great prof with a great sense of humor. I found her to be very engaging and really liked her projector notes. The class is pretty difficult, but she makes it easy to pass with EC/dropping your worst 2 worksheets and quizzes. If you put forward good effort, you will be fine, and she will help if you need it. Exams are pretty tough.
SHES USES AN ANCIENT OVER-HEAD PROJECTOR!! You know the ones from elementary and maybe middle school with the clear "paper" that is written on and then its flashed onto the screen? Yeah. That one. Enough said, horrible lectures, very ancient, and makes awkward jokes that no one laughs at.
I personally enjoyed Professor Siu's teaching style. She reviews previous material and allows you opportunity to practice it at the beginning of each class. Students are given opportunities to earn points back on exams and drop low quiz or worksheet grades. She is old-fashioned and can be condescending, but I found that I learned well in her class.
Overall the class wasn't too bad. She does expect you to know everything covered in lecture to a tee, some of the material being harder than what an introductory chemistry class should cover. Tests are a little challenging but she does drop 2 quizzes and worksheets and gives "second chance" on tests to get more credit. DO THE OWL for extra credit
Great professor! Lectures are very important, she will expect you to know everything covered in them. If there is something that you do not need to know she will tell you. Allows you to drop lowest quizzes/worksheets. Using an overhead projector for lecture which can sometimes be difficult to see depending on the lecture hall. Cheat sheet on final.
Honestly I wouldn't take her again if I had the chance. She was alright but she was rude when I asked her questions about the material one-on-one. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS: having a terrible grade the entire semester but then getting a final grade of a B or B+???????
Ladies and gentlemen, chemistry is hard. She puts out notes but you still have to read the book. Do not get the book! OWL has an ebook. Read the book as well as listen in lecture. When you ask her questions on exams, she makes you feel stupid. She is not helpful in any regard. 10/10 would not recommend. spent lots of time crying over chem.
She is nice enough but does not explain things well and talks down to you. This is a hard enough class so the professor should be able to explain things clearly so that everyone can understand and has a chance to do well.
I recommend not to take her class. She is a very difficult person , grades very harshly and laughs at you when you dont know an answer. If you do choose to take her class, well I wish you luck .
I cant believe I registered for this class without checking her rating. If you have a chemistry background already, you might be okay, but if not.... youre on your own. She does provide template notes to print out, but they dont explain things well. Quizzes and worksheets in discussion are difficult and easy to do awful on.
Study every word that comes out of her mouth, and give the lectures the most attention youve ever given anything in your life. She sometimes belittles you if you ask a question, but not every time. She seems to be a nice lady, but youll have to calculate your grade yourself because she isnt the best at working technology.
She taught using those old school projectors with notes printed on plastic sheets and markers. She was really nice and talking to her before class was always fun. She was a fair grader but really sarcastic. Not much homework that I can recall and tests were fairly easy. If you use your phone while she teaches she might make a snarky comment.
Loved professor siu!! She is so sweet and cares about her students. The class isnt very hard as long as you take good notes and study them for quizzes and exams.
Mrs. Siu was a great Professor. Definitely would take again, even though I had to work hard for my grade. Lab and owl assignments ( online quizzes ) are incorporated into your grade and help at the end of the semester. Quizzes are a bit harder, but once you get to the tests it makes it easier! She drops two quizzes and two worksheets which helps.
Not the best professor I've had, but she was good! She uses an old overhead projector with transparencies for notes and is willing stay after class to further explain something. She's really nice too!
Professor Siu uses an old projector for her lectures but the content is very good. She is clear on what to expect on the tests and she is very generous with extra credit opportunities.
You will basically have to teach yourself in here. She flies through everything & you will barely have time to write everything down, let alone actually understand the material.
Do not take Chem 109 with Professor Siu if you dont have a background in chemistry!!! Be willing to work, and make sure you can take notes very fast. Also, there is lots of extra credit opportunities: she drops your 2 lowest quizzes / worksheets. & also, If you complete all of the online homework, you get so much extra credit!
Professor Siu is awful. Her notes make no sense and are awful. She uses a projector and her notes suck. She makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. Quizzes in every other discussion, she does dorp the 2 lowest. Her exams are OK not bad. She is fast and isnt a good teacher, just gives info without explaining. She means well but i do not recom
easy class IF you have a background in chem. goes kinda fast in her lectures but shes more than willing to slow down if you ask her to. you can tell she cares about her students, shes very nice. i see complaints about her making you feel stupid if you ask a question, but she only did if she knew you werent paying attention and being rude.
