He exams are tough but that's just the course . You understand if you pay attention.
He is very thorough and genuinely wants the students to understand. His exams are fair but they can be difficult if you don't do the homeworks. Overall good professor and somewhat challenging class.
Professor Elliot Gangaram assesses his teachings throughout his lessons and finds new ways to present material to make sure that every student understands the key concepts. He is approachable and students can go to him with any problems or concerns because he warm, accessible and caring.
Good professor and very helpful. Well organized and employs effective delivery of materials.
He seems nice at first but is super strict with his work . Doesn't seem to care if you approach a situation to him . Take someone else if you can .
tests are little tricky but hey its math. He curves. do homeworks you will do fine.
Amazing prof. He will answer any question you have during the lecture if there's any confusion. He also goes over hw before class starts if you are stuck on a question. He Knows His Stuff! If you do the hw and participate, you will do well
Best math professor in the department. You'd be stupid to not jump at the opportunity to take him .
An excellent and skillful professor. Fortunate to have him. Thanks for teaching, educating and empowering me. Grades are a reflection of how well you understand and interpret your assignments. Looking forward to having you next semester.
He is one of the most awesome professor for Mathematics, knows what he is teaching. He will be there to help you. Tutoring hours are offered by him, the tests are really hard! Do not skip class - lectures are real heavy and a lot of notes. 4 tests and a final, lowest test dropped, review exam before any test. He made Math real easy for me. Thanks!
Mr. Gangaram is an excellent professor. Cares a lot about his students and doesn't just teach the material in a way for you to just pass the exam. He actually breaks the concepts down for you, enabling you to actually understand the true mathematics that are taking place. Easily approachable and will definitely help you if you are having trouble.
Very nice guy. Cares for his students. The class is tough though and his exams are tough also. He does curve though because he remembers how it is to be a student. You get homework every week and it is due on the day of the test. It's hard to keep up in class because he writes notes too fast and he's talking while you're writing down the notes.
bad professor, cant teach and wont curve
This was the first class Ive dropped as a junior. He writes A LOT of notes and to make it even worse his talking while writing. He doesnt give his students time to copy. The WORSE part is, is that youre rushing to copy notes that are directly from the textbook! EVERYTHING IS FROM THE TEXTBOOK. He makes you explain your answer on his exams!
Hes a nice guy, but nce doesnt help you pass the exams. He doesnt go over a lot of problems in class, and rushes a lot without explaining steps. Doesnt really curve either..
He rushes way too much. Even when I go to him for help he is still rushing. If you take him be prepared to teach yourself
Hes a good professor, but the course is hard and exams were pretty hard. There is no curve.
The material itself is hard to grasp but Gangaram did his best to show us shortcuts and easier ways to solve problems. As long as you try, he'll try to award you as many points as possible for tests and quizzes. He's very funny too. He loves fortnite btw
Elliot is a really cool dude, don't get me wrong, but a below average instructor. He spends most of the class writing theorems on the board instead of actually going through problems. Also, the time he spends on specific topics don't make sense to me. He spent nearly a month on limits, but covered related rates in one class, same with optimization
Well, his lectures and tests make me feel like im dropping at risky, we get quite tilted at his tutor sessions. He gives quizzes roughly ever fortnite, and all in all his way of teaching is pretty noobish. But Im the end he really teaches us the way of the game.
Prof Gangaram gave some feedback, though slow to return papers, but he goes over the exam solutions the next class after an exam. He gives quizzes throughout the semester for extra credit 5 points each as long they're done, and grades on a friendly curve, then rounds you up for the final. HE'S A VERY CLEAR LECTURER! Failed Prob before? Take this!
He's an excellent professor and possibly the funniest professor you will have at Queen's College. His exams are hard but his grading is beyond fair. The class is a wonderful experience. The thing I really loved about the class was that he answered every single question that was asked. No question was considered stupid. He also curves and gives EC.
he really know how to teach. The best professor I ever had. he will explain over an over if you have any question. he is always available after class. Thanks Professor I learned a lot from your classes.
He's great but his tests are almost impossible. On the recent exam, i got under a 30 and there were still people who did worse than me. he explains things amazingly well and he super chill. go to him if you have questions and study the random questions from the homework if you want to have a chance at passing an exam. best curve i ever saw
No doubt one of the best math professors at QC. He teaches the material extremely well, will go out of his way to answer any questions his students have and is a really fair grader. Make sure you do his optional homework assignments from the book since he bases his tests off of those for the most part. Just don't slack off and you'll be fine.
I believe he's a really nice professor. Was suprised that he's so young. But the way he teaches was very straight forward and easy understanding. His exams were mostly similar to the review sheets. So just attend to the classes. Do assignments. And be prepare your exams.
Good professor. I can see why 143 students say the exams are hard, because the 141 exams were hard too but this is because the departmental finals are really hard. Calc is hard. He knows this and does his absolute best to prepare you for the final and passing. He gives extra credit, grades very fairly, good office hours and replies to all emails.
If you hate this professor, it's probably because you hate math. He is one of the best math professor in Queens College, who knows how to teach. Exams hard? it's because you didn't do what you were supposed to do. His exams are straight out of the Homeworks and totally similar to review sheets. Do the homeworks (do not fall behind) you will pass.
Super good professor. He is kind and is willing to help students. His lecture is fun. As long as you do homework every time, you must will pass. Love this professor.
He is one of the best professor in Queen's college. he is kind , caring and willing to help students , he teaches the material extremely well. Super good professor .
HW not collected or graded, but you're shooting yourself in the foot if you don't do it. Quiz and test questions are taken directly from the HW, so if you do what's assigned you should pass the class easily. Pretty lenient grader as long as you show work and give him room to give partial credit on questions. Great professor, highly recommend.
Really great professor. Be sure to ask him a lot of questions about anything you don't understand because he really loves questions. Do all the HWs thats assigned (Do it multiple times). Exam questions are super similar to HW questions and quiz questions are directly taken from the HW. One of the best classes I've had the pleasure of taking.
He teaches very well and makes every topic clear to understand. Ask any questions you have because he is more than willing to answer them. Most important aspect of the class is to do all the homework problems. If you are able to solve the homework problems on your own you will do well
Took him for 143 and 241. He's a great lecturer and is willing to answer any questions students have to the best of his ability. The exams are heavily based on the homework but simply glancing at the solutions won't get you a desirable grade. You need to thoroughly understand the questions and concepts to do well on his exams. He is extremely fair.
Great professor, but you must do the homework and stay on top of the topics. If you fall behind it will be harder to catch up. The tests are based on the homework questions so although he doesn't grade homeworks it would be smart to do them. If you have the option to take him, go for it.
One of the best math professors in QC. I'm usually bad in math I get away with it C or C+ and I hate it but he made me love mat 241. His lectures were amazing and he is super friendly. His exams were fair and fairly similar to the hw and his quizzes were based off the hw. Make sure you remember the theorems because those show up on the exam
I came into this class hating Probability and Statistics. After this class I learned to appreciate the subject and have a pretty good understanding of it. He is a great guy and I would definitely recommend taking his class.
Elliot is a pretty chill dude. He is tough and easy to talk to. Although this semester the course transitioned over to remote learning, it was hard for students to juggle recorded lecture videos and asynchronous homework activities along with other courses that have similar features. Overall, he is a nice guy but, does not hand out grades like that
One of the best math professors I've taken so far. The subject matter itself can be somewhat convoluted but Professor Elliot does a great job at explaining the material and supplementing with extra materials that help visually explain some rather abstract concepts. Extremely down to earth and easy to talk to as well.
This is probably his first time teaching linear algebra and he was awesome! This guy is one of the kindest math professor I met so far. But yeah, you definitely have to work for your grade.
Without a doubt, he's the best instructor I've had at QC thus far. This course is not meant to be easy. But he taught it in a way where you can understand the material very well. I started and finished this online class learning so much and enjoying what I learned on top of that. I strongly recommend him to anyone.
Professors should be mandated to teach live instead of them having the option to prerecord lectures which makes it so much harder to understand. Tough grader.
He is such a gem at QC, and truly helpful! He cares for all his students, and is always willing to email you back if you have questions. His exams were tricky, but if you use all his video lectures , the homework, and the textbook you will do just fine. Wish he taught more calculus classes! He helped me become more comfortable with math.
I took Professor Gangaram for math 141 (spring 2020) & 142 (fall 2020). He is an AMAZING professor. Both classes had pre-recorded lectures to watch - I dont really like that because its hard to keep up with them but it wasnt too bad. Professor Gangaram helped me fall in love with math again. If you can take him, DO IT!!!
Incredibly flexible with deadlines to the point where he should be given Sainthood by every major religious authority. Articulates concepts and techniques particularly well. Assigns multiple interesting problems that people interested in mathematics for the sake of mathematics will really enjoy doing. Most relaxed class of my 5 classes this sem.
He is a caring teacher who is very good at teaching and is willing to explain something many times until you are comfortable with the topic. It was a very challenging course. Go to office hours to get help with the homework. In Youtube, search for "Math241 Elliot Gangaram at Queens College." There is a review video on this course.
This professor is caring and incredibly patient when explaining complex concepts. His style of teaching makes difficult concepts more comprehensive. I'm glad I have the opportunity to take this course with him. He is very flexible with assignment deadlines. He really cares for his students. Nothing but the best!
The best calculus teacher you can ask for, breaks concepts downs and is always willing to help. Hes young and relates to the struggles of students, while being a proper professor in the pandemic. Helped me find confidence when it came to math while challenging me to think outside the box, made calc relatable to the real world!
I felt lost throughout the whole course. His class is very hard and his Exams are even harder. He doesn't curve be advised. I haven't had a class this hard in my time at queens college. I think I would've been Able to do ok if he was the only class I was taking. can't recommend.
one of the best professors I have taken. for this class: do homework questions: quizzes are taken directly from them and the exams are based on them. super caring! once you put in the effort, he will help u as much as he can. pretty lenient, and willing to debate extra credit. I thought this was a gonna be a hard class, but he made it doable.
Professor Gangaram was a great instructor. His lectures were clear, and I was never lost or confused. He relies heavily on homework to reinforce class concepts, and bases his exam questions off of the homework problems, so be sure to do it! He also provided extra credit for the exams based on class performance. I highly recommend his classes!
Def not a fan of this professor. I think his exam were very tricky and he enjoys making people suffer with his exams. He says hw are based on exams but the exams are different from lectures and hws.
Please be warned about this professor. Dont chegg questions on any Exams. He will go the extra mile to check if you cheated, and will report you. Please dont do it to yourself. Once again he does check if you posted the Exam questions on chegg. Drop if need be.
He's a very nice professor, always allows questions in class but the questions in the exams are very different from the hw. You are only graded by 3 exams and HW on webassign so don't expect to pass if you don't study for those!
This Professor teaches great, willing to answer any questions during class time. Provides review sheets before every exam, giving a feel on what the exam will be like.
If you choose to Chegg answers you will pay a price, obviously. He is an awesome professor, he makes lectures crystal clear. Your best bet is to practice from the textbook and go to his office hours or shoot an email when in doubt. If you cheat you will pay a price, just work honestly; he is one of the best professors out there. Really great person
Very tough class in general. His lectures are very clear and concise and goes over hw questions when asked. Homework is encouraged to do because exams/quizzes are based on it but just tricker/harder. Very understanding and kind professor; he gave us a lot of extra credit. Don't fall behind or else you'll never pass. Study and understand the hw!
he was incredible- so patient and SO clear in his explanations. theres 5 group projects but he grades more based on if he sees youre trying and theres 2 tests but you can take them with your group. HIGHLY recommend such a chiller
He is one of the best professors I've had. He is very clear when he teaches, very neat and organized, very understanding, we had 5 projects, and 2 exams. We had the option of working on the exam as a group. Would help when were confused. Very chill, I would definitely retake the professor if I could.
He really enjoys making tough exams. He knows people struggle and still decides to make his exams extremely tough. He might be patient and answer questions but does not mean he is fair with his exams. I wouldn't recommend him. It also seems like he writes the excellent reviews on here. He's clear in teaching but he aint da best out there 4 sure.
the nicest professor i have ever taken. he will do anything for his students. he gives extra credit on exams and i mean telling him interesting facts about you and thats extra credit. the class material in my opinion is very hard but that is not his fault. semester is not over yet but so far i have gotten high 90s
He's a very good professor and yes, his tests are hard but that's the point of the Math problem solving class. You can teach someone how to play basketball well, but will they be good at it? Same thing with competitive math problems.
You can tell he is one of those types who have been naturally skilled in math from a very young age but he is still someone who can break things down for those who aren't that way. I appreciate that he is flexible and understanding of the fact that we may need deadline extensions sometimes
idk how i passed his class lol bc i'm bad at math but somehow i did. anyway yeah he's nice and i think hes actually real with his niceness instead of putting on a front. had him last summer i wonder how he looks in person
He is very reasonable about grading and clearly plans out his lectures in advance
taking him rn for 241, at first i was having a ruff time but now i get it so there ya go lol idk why ppl struggle with this stuff
The homework problems are a bit different from the test problems because he writes the test problems, but as long as you truly understand the underlying concepts you should be fine. I got an A from the Summer 2021 version of the MATH241, held online. My approach was to make sure I knew how to do every problem without using Slader/Chegg.
ngl you would have to be hella slow to fail his class. With all the curves he gives, you can literally get a 0 for exam 1, a 40 for another exam but still pass with a C. You put in some work, you're guaranteed the easiest A. If you disagree, then you must ask yourself were you even trying.?
He is one of the nicest Professors in math department. Apart from being knowledgeable and amazing professor he is really good person and cares a lot for his students.
He is a great guy. His lectures are mostly him explaining the different theorem/R.V being used in the problem sets. If he does do a problem, it is very simple while test questions are much more complex. Goes over H.W upon request. Test 1 was incredibly hard, class average was 58. He wants you to pass though and is very fair. There are better option
Prof. G is the best. He is straightforward, helpful in office hour & gives you many opportunities to improve. Do the HW & retry tests. Practice, like any math course is essential. Prof. G will teach you how to approach a problem, not to memorize and you're better off for it. Material might be hard but he makes it something to look forward to.
One of the best professors I have taken! the lecture is clear, he is not just giving definitions but giving intuitions about the topic. He really wants us to pass. He gives take-home quizzes that are super easy, anyone can get 100s on them! The test is kind of hard but he let you use a cheat sheet and curve the grade if the average is low.
He is literally awesome. the course is hard but he makes it easy. Super easy to understand. Just do the homework and you are good. the test is literally his homework questions.
Probably the best professor I have taken in QC for math. He doesnt teach like other professors at all. He makes sure the material is taught to in the simplest and easiest possible form to understand. Quite literally.
Professor Gangaram is one of the best Math professors in QC! He's super chill, always understanding, and explains the material very well. And his lectures are also very informative, as well as he posts all of the materials for the course as soon as he can. Very flexible with all of the assignments and exams, and would highly recommend!
66 percent total for two tests and final. He can explain very well, but then he'll say "the test is an extension of the HW" - false. The tests are so hard the class average is usually in the 60's and he curves like 2-4 points. He even went into our second test knowing he was going to curve bc he put a proof question on it that we NEVER saw before.
Legend
THE GOAT, he knows his stuff. Take him
There is no negatives about him. But he is like a book, he knows everything but someone has to take the benefit by listening to him and asking him questions. Take him, and then be ready to just focus and practice and ask him anything. He knows his subject like no other, but that's half the job rest is yours.
He explains topics well and focuses too much on proofs and definitions. The questions you have to solve for are simple if you pay attention, he gives a few quizzes and gives a bit of extra credit on exams, Each exam has a proof question that he does in class which is complicated,True and False Questions hard, no credit without correct explanation.
I never understood or viewed math the way I do now thanks to professor Gangaram. He explains math in a way that helps students grasp the concepts instead of just memorizing ideas. Would definitely take again.
One of the best mathematics professors I've ever met. Professor Elliot makes his lectures engaging and is always open to answering questions to clarify any confusion. His ability to explain difficult concepts and proofs stood out to me the most.
Only take 241 with this goat!
Very proof heavy compared to the other 231 professors. If you are not good at proofs don't take this class. It will just hurt ur GPA. He is very passionate about math and wants to help his students. He wants his students to think and understand the theories behind the math. However, if you're bad with proofs then the exams will get you.
GOAT!!!!!
Very good professor. Makes hard topic look easier by his explanation.
A living legend of math-241. GOAT
I know scarcely anything so apt to impress the imagination as the wonderful form of the cosmic order expressed by professor Elliot. The professor would have been personified and deified, if they had known of him. He reigns with serenity and in complete self-effacement, amidst the wildest confusion.
A needle in a haystack; only told in legends. Extremely caring and has clear understanding in what he teaches through the lectures. He will build your foundation of probability for future classes. He helped us until 1 AM studying for exams and finals outside of class hours and even gave us an abundant amount of extra credit for homework. GOAT
Amazing prof at QC going to his class was very enjoyable he wants you to leave the class with a greater understanding of probability and his enthusiasm and effort to help every student is too good you cannot find a better prof than Gangaram he is just too goated
Took him for non-traditional classes. Creates an unstructured, inconsistent class environment where I constantly got overstimulated. Goes quite slow and seems he had no idea what he wanted to teach next. Not always accessible in person, which is frustrating when needing assistance with homework--relying on also lost peers. Kind and good explainer.
I hope this guy doesn't get bored or dissatisfied with his work because he's making some real change. He's mastered the pedagogy of math IMO. But to be more pragmatic: he designs his homeworks to be comprehensive reviews of the material, so they can be dense. But if you've mastered the homeworks, you're guaranteed an A+. Also, learn LaTeX for EC.
I found this class to be tougher than Calculus 2, but Professor Gangaram made the material intuitive and fun to learn enough which made me not drop the class after I got my midterm grades back. Lectures/Notes - 10/10 Humor - 10/10 Extra Credit - 10/10 Extensions - 10/10 Communication - 10/10 It's refreshing to take a professor who loves his job.
Prof Gangaram's teaching style is clear, organized, and engaging. He is always well prepared and uses examples that help students connect theoretical concepts to real world scenarios. Not sure of my grade as of this review, but this class was truly fun, and I learned a lot about probability. The absolute G.O.A.T! 🐐🔥 Thank you for a good semester.
Very enthusiastic about the topics we learned and makes sure to not make the class boring. He tries his absolute hardest to make the class passable with multiple extra credit opportunities and each exam is only 19% of your grade with the final being 25%. 100% take him and try your hardest to do all the homework problems multiple times.
Gangaram is a great lecturer/explainer. This course was fairly fun with Gangaram as the instructor. There is extra credit assignments students can do. Has videos available for students that miss class. All the assignments he assigns will prepare you for the tests.
I don't see the hype with his class.
good luck.
Literally just do all the homeworks
Gangaram is a great professor; he explains all concepts clearly and makes them applicable to real-life scenarios, and he has a lot of availability to help you if you need more clarity. However, I think his exams were pretty difficult and did not reflect the homework as people said, but discrete is a tough course overall.
