This professor flat out sucks. His tests are insane. I am a smart student. I have taken a lot of bio, chem and math classes. Nothing ever like this!!!! worst part: he is the only professor for genetics so everyone retakes it.
I liked Dr. Goldstein. I got an A in his class because if you set aside his bad jokes and tough grading, he really knows how to present the information in a way that makes sense...as long as you do it his way, you are fine.
After re-taking it, I got an A, I also got an A in molecular as well. However, suspend all reality once you enter the door and step into the Goldstein Zone... if you take good notes you'll not have a problem if you answer the questions verbatim.
If you have to, which you and half the class will ,retake genetics at west campus with prof. Marshall. Elliot genetics is impossible, he doesn't care about teaching, just doing things his way. Marshall is great and she is very enthusiastic/motivating.
I got an A by getting his old exams and really studying them. If you study his past exams, you will have no problem in his class. If not, it is likely you will have to retake his class.
Knowledgable professor. Doesn't really relate the course material very well. His TA's grading policies suck though. And they almost refuse to help if you go to office hours.
It's simple: many people flunk this course.
Do NOT put this class off until the spring before you graduate. They do not offer it during the summer and if you fail (many people do) you are toast if you want to apply to med or vet school. Study hard and take good notes. Good notes are key.
The class isn't bad if you do it his way. 40% of the class gets As and Bs, but 20% of the class fails. The key to success is take good notes and do well on the homework. Tests are essay questions and if you answer them as he explains it in lecture, you will be much better off. Know vocabulary!
I LOVE DR. GOLDSTEIN! yes his class is hard yes you have to work hard, but if i can get an A so can you. ITS ALL ABOUT OLD EXAMS..if you can get your hands on old exams and learn how to do the problems that are on it..you are SET!!
So all I have to say is this man looks like a turtle and he is very rude. I got an A, but it is only because I rejected everything he ever said!
He gives ambiguous questions, yet expects very specific answers. His TAs are of no real use, and will give conflicting information.
the man is a troll. he has the biggest ego and find pleasure off of failing students. he wants everything his way and leaves no room for error. his TAs are satans children...in other words his children. they want to be like him so they try to be all tough but are completly clueless. i have no idea how i managed to pass his class i was very lucky.
Yes, the class is difficult, but you learn a lot. I'm studying for the MCAT and after taking his class my Bio section score went up 3 points. And he's actually a really nice guy if you go to his office and talk to him. And you can certainly get an A if you pay attention during class, take good notes, and study all the material (old tests are helpfu

Brilliant man and excellent professor. Very patient. He cares that his students learn. Go to class, take notes, do the homework, and you'll do well. He is clear about his expectations and what you need to do to succeed in his class. I would definitely take another class from him.
He knows his field of study VERY well and he definitely cares about his students. Frankly, though, his teaching is awful and his tests are terribly written. The TAs made the experience even worse. In retrospect, the best way to learn is to approach him often during office hours. He teaches better in his office, and esp. if he knows you very well.
Tests, HW and course material is geared towards medical honor societies/fraternities/sororities. This means that if you have previous copies of exams, HWs and answers you will do well. Especially if from the last decade or so. This class is also a bottlenecker: only 1 section per semester; required by 5+ majors, and also pre-med. Unreal
He has been teaching for 31 years. He is a brilliant man, but a horrible teacher; I would not recommend him to anyone. Unfortunately, his course is required for many science majors and he is the only prof during the the fall and spring.
I don't know who is worse his TA's or Him. I hated this class. His tests are hard because he is ambiguous in the question or they are open questions then he wants a exact answer. If I never see him again I would be OK with that. Recomendation- find someone with copies of the old tests to study from. Its the only way to get through his tests.
Keyword = OLD EXAMS!!! All I did was study old exams.. I had about 5 exams per section. And I got an A. If you dont get old exams this class is very difficult...So find someone!!
Arrogant, unreasonable, and patronizing. He marked me wrong for putting the correct answer on a test. When I came to discuss it, he admitted that he worded the question poorly but said I should have "known what he meant." I found sources that supported my answer, but he refused to look at them. He said he didn't care and I was wasting my time.

Goldstein kept telling the class to come see him if you have questions. At first, he was arrogant and said, "you should know that, I taught that in class." I continued to bug him and make him explain things in different ways and after awhile, he knew to talk to me differently to help me learn better. I think that's the trick.
Everything you need to earn an A is readily available: in class notes, the notes he posts online, homework questions, a booklet of terms, the book, copies of old exams you can buy from the copy room in the library, in class problems, and office hours. Dr. Goldstein is an excellent professor with a lot of experience in teaching.
this guy is worst teacher ever.
He's wonderful and a genius! You will learn soo much from this class!! Tips to get an A: Listen and take notes in class, study old exams, Do your homework!, see the TAs, HAVE FUN! Fav. Dr. G. quote: "Not being a female fly myself, I would not know if it's the tap or the vibration of the wings that attracts the mate." -or something like this :P
2 words: Voice recorder! Tough class b/c exams are ambiguous. He knows his subject very well and while he may come across intimidating--TALK to him! Its the only way to know what he is looking for. Lectures are clear/concise. Learn to draw b/c he'd rather look at a picture than read your answer. Be exact to his lecture drawings and notes.
Four words: Take it at East! Why? 1) No partial credit. Super helpful when 2 problems comprise 1/2 the test! 2) Evidently only 2 types of students--great ones (A/B) and terrible ones (D/E). Gives virtually no Cs. 3) condescending, arrogant 4) has taught it so long that he can't imagine in his wildest dreams how anyone would have difficulty with it
Highest grade I have earned in college. He expects a lot!!! But he really teaches it well. My advice, take it in the summer when you wont forget everything so quickly because this class had MORE material than any other class I have ever taken. Memorize the definitions in his exact words. If you do this you will do just fine on the tests!
This class made my entire semester a living hell because of the tests. The best thing you can do is get old copies of tests (more than 1 per exam) and study those. He is a good lecturer and very nice in person but the class is needlessly difficult. Material is interesting. Don't try to actually study, just learn the old tests.
I actually thought this class was a pretty easy A. I mean you only need an 85%. His lectures are clear and all the things he makes you memorize make future classes, like biochemistry and molecular genetics, a lot easier. When it's over, you will have a clear understanding of the material that will stick with you throughout college.
He thinks that every student of his SHOULD think like him. His exams are very ambiguous and expect for the student to get explain their answers just like he had lectured in class. Boring class. No great illustrations at all. Waste of my money, waste of my time.
He is brilliant when it comes to the subject of genetics, but as others have said he has been teaching it so long he doesnt understand why his class is difficult for alot of students. His exams are very rough, all essay and rarely partial credit.
Goldstein lectures get to be unclear and arduous to listen to even when you have an interest in the subject. When it comes to asking for help and asking questions he just hits you back with more questions. The way he grades tests is harsh. If you don't use the exact words he is thinking it is WRONG. Even if your answers and knowledge are techn
He can be pretty harsh and detached in BIO 340, but in BIO 543 he is amazingly friendly and hilarious. You just have to pay attention in lecture and you can pull off an A. This (either BIO 340 OR 543) is no walk in the park - but you will learn almost everything you need as a bio major... BIO 345, for example, is but a chapter in BIO 340.
Excellent lectures. By hand on the chalkboard which I appreciate. Tests are formulaic, but after the first one fairly easy to prepare for. You actually end up with beautiful cohesive notes for this class, which I appreciate. I even recopied them which is unusual. He makes the effort to keep up with current research which is great.
Dr. Goldstein is an awesome prof! Take him if you actually want to learn genetics. The materials he teaches in his class is helpful for future BIO classes. He's funny and his lectures are very organized. Just study his lecture notes and spend time doing the homework, and it's an easy A!!! I don't think this class is as hard as people make it to be.
Goldstein is an excellent professor and he knows he stuff, howvever, the class and his exams are so difficult. I spent so much time studying for this class that I just about failed all my other classes. My advice would be to take him cause he knows alot but do not take it with other classes. Perhaps take it over the summer. There's alot of studying
Class was amazingly interesting, however the fun was over after the introduction b/c he re-iterated that this would be the hardest class we'll ever take. He is intimidating! To get an A you MUST attend ALL lectures, review your notes, do your homework & ask questions. REVIEW OLD EXAMS as well-helpful! Loved the class, but definitely requires time!!
He can be intimidating...but he's really not that bad. Attending lectures is a must! Don't need the book at all. Homework is very time consuming and graded harshly by the TAs. If you go to the TA who grades the hw of that week, they'll help you. Collect his old exams! Overall, a very interesting class. He knows how to lecture well and isn't boring.
Dr. Goldstein is a very good professor. That being said this class is very challenging. You must attend lectures every day and most importantly study old test. This is one of those classes that you just have to grind it out. Prepare to enter the Goldstein Zone!
Sheer inanity. Subject difficult: To be expected, suck it up. Reading minds: incredibly hard, incredibly asinine, and incredibly unfair. Your grade hinges upon perfect diagrams in perfect format. Other formats (even correct ones) are never acceptable, and one TA might approve your homework and then another one dock points while grading.
Go to class, take notes, and make sure you do all the homework. Homework is very time consuming, but somewhat helpful. Dr. G is pretty much useless during office hours and has an innate ability to not answer questions clearly. Study old tests! There are tests from the last 10 years floating around. Take Pratt if you can much easier A.
Dr. Goldstein was a great professor. I learned a LOT in his class. I'd heard things about how hard the class would be, but it ended up being pretty easy. As long as you attend class and take notes, you'll be fine. He gives homework that helps does in class activities that help prepare you- also find as many old tests as you can and you will be set.
Worst class. He is very selective on who he likes. My friend would get F's on his tests, but would have the same answers as the A students. Took him before a university panel. He yelled, she had proof of is very innacurate grading, and he won. Take Marshall at West campus. She is wonderful and so willing to help.
Genetics is a hard class, but Goldstein tells you exactly what to do to pass. He's not the most exciting guy on the planet, but he's a nice guy and his lectures are extremely clear.
Goldstein is one of the best lecture teachers I've had at ASU. His lectures are very clear, and he tells you exactly what he wants, and exactly how to answer his test questions. The material is hard, but if you attend class VERY regularly, take good notes (even tho his get posted online), and read the chapters you will do well.
Goldstein was a great professor, one of the best I have ever had. He truly knows his stuff. The class is hard but you have to put time into it. The people who complain are those that don't study and expect it to be easy, in other words the failures. He is extremely helpful in the office if you make an effort to learn. I highly recommend this class
Memorization and Comprehension are critical, however if your comprehension of material is very good but your answer is not exactly word for word as professors you are wrong!Very little partial credit is awarded and questions are vaguely worded.More points awarded for typed homework then handwritten and TA's grade differently.Try to find alt prof!
Easy class. Good lectures, and has them posted on BlackBoard. just memorize the notes and understand them (as they are well outlined). helpful TAs. Goldstein isn't as bad as everyone says he is, just study...thats all.
He's a good lecturer, and is helpful outside of class. As far as grades, it's important to figure out what he wants. He is particular about how you answer the questions on the tests.
Not recommended if you are self-supporting student working 35 hours/week while taking 14+ credits. Do everything possible to ace 1st exam and get all hw points. Recommend 2-3 hours after every class reviewing material. Take other professor if you value sleep or want an A. TA John is awesome, VERY helpful.
If your lazy do not take this class. Otherwise it is a pretty simple course. Study vocab, old tests, and compare your notes with Dr. G notes on BB and you should be good. TAs are very helpful so make sure to check hw with them.
He is a good teacher.Attend lectures,do homework, read textbook, web notes and own notes. His exam grading is not very fair, varies from person to person.Couldnt give me a breakdown of why I lost points.Dont take him if you have another option....
Goldstein really knows what he is talking about but his standards are insulting. If you do not think like he does, it is nearly impossible to pass. His grading on exams is extremely unforgiving-if you miss a single mundane detail, you receive 0 credit. I spent weeks studying in advance for this course and got a D. I've never received a grade so low
Worst teacher in the world if they ever was an award for that Goldstein would win it hands down. If you value your GPA dont ever take him. I have never had an E in my life and today I am the proud owner of an E in my transcripts.
I actually really liked Goldstein. He is actually nice during office hours. I think his lecturing style is extremely helpful for learning. He writes on the chalkboard and talks. No distracting powerpoint. His tests are hard, yes. Get a hold of previous tests from an old student. Invaluable tool. Be willing to do lots of memorizing.
Ah, Goldstein...he made the second half of my summer completely miserable. His class is EXTREMELY hard, and you will have to spend up to 6 hours a day studying to get a good grade. His lectures are good, and I would suggest going to both his office and the tutoring center on a daily basis to make sure you understand what he wants from you.Good luck
The class was insane. I am a good student-I get the grade I work for, but Goldstein is impossible. He plays favorites and his exam questions are extremely unclear-questions vague but answers are v specific. Get on his good side early: you might pass. Lectures were great, but he will obliterate your GPA. He needs to reevaluate his ridic standards
As a graduating honors student, I can honestly say that it is an unfortunate tragedy that this teacher is allowed to influence the minds of future generations. He teachs a fascinating subject with rude remarks and complete disorganized failure. He is the only regret I will have at ASU and am comforted with the ability to formally submit a complaint
Dr. Goldstein is awful! This subject is already difficult enough but with a professor who does not grade based on knowledge but on being able to regurgitate everything he says makes it impossible. This will be the first fail in my entire school career. If you must take read the text religiously as well as read the lecture notes TA's post.
He is an amazing professor. After each explanation he asks, "are there any questions up to this point?" - and then waits 15 seconds to make sure we understand. Crystal clear on expectations and sticks exactly to the syllabus. Tests aren't easy but an 'A' is 85% and not too difficult. Optional cumulative final. Great class; great professor.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone looking to take genetics. Take another professor if you can, everyone I talked to when I took him said "good luck" your going to need it. Grading is his opinion, if he doesn't like your style you won't pass the class. Grades really do vary tremendously, he's a relic from a different era that's for sure!
Great professor! His class wasn't easy, but an 85% is an A and 93% is an A plus. Option to take cumulative final. He was extremely helpful. I definitely recommend this class.
Dr. Goldstein lets you know from the start- he requires your best effort. If you cannot or will not bring it, find another professor. There are 4 TA's, the learning center, and Goldstein himself all there for you in case you are struggling. He asks a hundred times if there are any questions. I NEVER found him to be rude. He's a top notch professor.
Goldstein is amazing and I'm not just saying that because I recieved an A. The class can be difficult at times but not unbearable at all. He expects you to earn your grade and I completely respect that. I did not use the text much but I would suggest buying it just in case. Overall funny and pleasant teacher. Class was my favorite of the semester!!
Amazing class!!! One of my top 3 at ASU. The best part is he writes/draws on the board and never uses powerpoints. Homeworks are frustrating, but only because they require you to think!
Goldstein is a horribly unclear professor. I don't understand how there are so many positive ratings on this site. I am an all A student, had a GPA near 4.0 and ended up with a C in this class. Grading literally is his opinion and is not based on your knowledge. Tests are based on memorization of obscure facts instead of important genetics concepts
Somehow I managed to pass the class but it was the worst experience of my life. Memorize notes word for word and you might be able to get through the class, but you'll still get stuff wrong on the exams because he has extremely specific answers and hardly any partial points are given. Taught well in class, but standards for exams are ridiculous.
Very good and very knowledgeable professor, great lectures, gives ample opportunity to do well, but his grading of exams is unrealistically hard, and he knows this, and he doesn't care. You want an A or B, be prepared to memorize his lectures and notes word for word
Nice guy, great lecturer. Easy? Hell no. I've taken honors and difficult classes, but I've never received a D. He is extremely unclear about what he wants. Exam questions need very specific answers, or no credit is given. Answer in the way he would, and maybe you'll get some points. He favors certain students, so get on his good side early.
I looked at all the ratings before taking Dr. Goldstein, but I still took him anyways hoping that the few glowing reviews were true. Worst decision ever. I memorized his lecture notes word for word and ended up barely getting a C+. Interesting lectures, but completely unreasonable testing standards. Don't take him if you don't have to. Trust me.
Please do yourself a favor and pick some1 else. Our summer class if full of people with scholarships, honor students, 4.0 students, and even people who had already graduated, and we are walking today to our final with big fat F's. Its not a joke, it doesnot matter how much you study or how smart you are. He is just picky and mean. dnt take him.
As most other reviews have said before, his exams are extremely hard, he wants the specific answers he gives during lecture, and his grading is unforgiving. My favorite part is when a student asks how he wants an answer on the test. Dr. Goldstein answers, "It depends on my mood." He has said this many times. This is not how I want my exams graded.
DO NOT take this class if you plan to have a social life. I really enjoyed this class and did get an A but it was not easy. He was VERY clear on what was expected and there are four TAs! Use them! That is the key to an A or passing. Spent 4+ hrs a week and 12+ hrs for exams. Highly recommend recording his class.
What everyone else says about Dr. Goldstein is true to the last letter. He knows his stuff and the lectures are amazingly entertaining but the tests are obnoxious. Came out of the first one thinking I dominated it but wound up getting a 59. Depending on how the 2nd test goes, withdrawal seems to be the only alternative to an F.
Took this class after realizing that I wanted to major in Genetics. My grades on average are As and Bs but after studying for hours upon hours a day for this class, I still managed to fail along with many others. Avoid this prof @ ALL COSTS! He claims to want you to learn concepts but his tests are all about memorization and have no multiple choice
Dr. Goldstein is extremely knowledgeable, but his standards are too high. This class is extremely difficult. All about memorizing every single word he says - not so much learning the concepts. Tests and quizzes are hard. Feeling confident about a quiz, but receiving a 50 on it is the norm. I would avoid, especially if you're taking other classes.
I took genetics from Goldstein about a decade ago. It was one of the hardest courses I took as an undergraduate. HOWEVER, I have retained more from this class than 4 courses put together. I found that I was better prepared for graduate courses later on in life. The course, the way he teaches it is difficult and time-taxing, but it is worth it!
Went into this class expecting difficulty, not expecting failure. Struggled to listen to his long, boring lectures. A lot of points are earned by memorizing HIS exact definitions, and he takes off points even if you're correct but it's worded differently. Unless you're cool with rote memorization and mediocre understanding, don't take this class.
My major is genetics and i still got a D in this course. His tests are ridiculous; the only way you will survive is to know someone who has taken the class and can give you all their notes/tests. It doesn't matter how "good of a student you are", this was a ridiculous class. Also very difficult to hear more often than not and makes mistakes. RUN!
As others have mentioned this class is very difficult though I'd say the most difficult part about it is the vocabulary. Concepts aren't harder than what you find in most other science courses and he usually tells you EXACTLY the kind of questions he's going to ask on the exam. Nonetheless a difficult and time-consuming class but not impossible
I would strongly recommend you take Bio 340 from another teacher besides Goldstein. The tests are extremely difficult and one spends more time debating what Dr. Goldstein wants to see instead of actually understanding the concepts. If your answer is even one word different from his idea, there is no partial credit and the whole answer is wrong.
I loved his class and am glad I took genetics with Goldstein. Yes, he is a tough grader on the exams, but if you study his vocab book and actually pay attention in class, you'll do well. I got B's on the exams but still got an A in the class- the homework he assigns definitely helps boost your grade.
Very good class. To pass and get a good grade you HAVE to attend class. His exams are almost exactly the study guide, just study that and the vocab and you can easily get an A. The easiest bio class i've taken
Hey Summer 2013 Folks. All the reviews on this site ring true. He is tough but truly cares about students. He has an OPEN DOOR POLICY so use it! was a late add & had to obtain his permission. He told me print notes online, ask questions, & see him during office hours. I did & I passed my last class @ ASU. FYI dont need the book his notes are enough
Avoid. Bad reviews are 100% true, I thought they were bad students. Test avgs 50%. 1 ex) question on a quiz, got all points, wrote EXACT answer on exam, gave 0 & refused to change. Delusional. Office hours are a joke. Asks random definitions, not important material. Waste of time/$. Most are filing grievance forms. Can't believe they let him teach.
Doesn't use easy to understand language. Uses white board, makes it hard to take note. Can't relate concepts from one section to the next. Doesn't listen to students when speaking to him, just rushes to answer the question without fully understanding it. Exams are 6 essay ques. Hard grader. Bad @ replying to emails. Has open door pol. but is rude.
This was one of the best classes I've taken at ASU. His exams are not all that bad if you do the homework and his old exams which he provides as well as know the vocabulary he mentions in lecture. A cumulative final if you get an 85% on the cumulative regardless of your grade in the class he gives you an A. I recommend.
Took the six-week summer course so material was very heavy every class lecture. Genetics itself is a logical science so if you have any problems understanding the concepts, MAKE SURE to get help asap. Do NOT be passive; make sure to be engaged with the class concepts. Visit Dr. Goldstein in his office; he is extremely helpful and approachable.
I just don't get all the good reviews, I would never take a lecture from this professor. Really sweet guy when you go to his office. But he teaches in a huge classroom and hand writes all his notes on the board. Arbitrary grading with no partial credit on 20 pt essay questions on tests. Unorganized and doesn't respond to emails. Very old school guy
Dr. Goldstein is a very nice man, but he is not a very capable instructor. I am taking this class in COOR170 and if you are familiar with that room it is *huge*, and he does not use a microphone or the overheadpowerpoint - he writes all his notes on the white board, and his tests are TOO difficult. No partial credit on essay only exams. Avoid.
This class is very difficult. He is not clear on the hw, in order for you to know EXACTLY what the graders want you must go talk to the TAs outside of class. His tests are essay format, and he is a very tough grader. Sit up front in class because he writes on the white board very small and abbreviates alot. Recommend going to SI sessions.
He's a pretty good professor, it's really clear he's been doing this a long time. But sometimes he forgets to say things, whether it's because someone asks a question or he sidetracks himself. So you have to pay attention. He'll listen to you if you ask him to move something on the board (he writes on the whiteboard a lot). Also pray for good TA's.
He's a good instructor but very old school. The key to doing well is this: attend class, sit up front (since he writes on the board) and take good notes, and go through his past exams. Once you realize that the class is formulaic, it's really not all that bad and the exams don't take much time preparing for.
The general consensus seems pretty split on this guy. Personally I wasn't a fan. Tests are TOUGH and don't do a good job of evenly distributing class material. He'll have entire lectures worth 2 points and 25 minute handouts worth 20%. It's all a guessing game. I've never had a class grade be so disproportionate to time spent studying. Do not take
Great lecturer, but I can't say the tests or homework were very fun. Can be pretty unclear about what he wants and grades very harshly. Somewhat forgiving if you write out everything you know about the material, but occasionally you will get no partial credit for a mostly correct answer. Study hard for exams; they can be a bit tricky.
Genetics is not a hard subject for me being that I am a worker in the biodesign so I will get too it. When a teacher asks you to memorize the mechanism of two different operons three days before the test that is not a good teacher. Too old for teaching and can not communicate. I am astonished on how he was able to stupefy a class on general work.
I would not recommend taking Goldstein for genetics. His exams are essay style and you have to be extremely specific. Each question is worth 20 points and if you put 1 small thing wrong, the whole question is wrong. Its hard to follow his grading scale. You will have a worksheet worth 100 points every week, but he only takes your average score.
Take someone else. He's a harsh grader. Essay style exams. He tries to help but ends up frustrating the students. Will not curve the class. Average on exams were about 50-60% for two exams. He really likes vocabulary. Overall frustrating to deal with. There is no negotiating with him on grades.
I think Prof Goldstein is an absolutely amazing teacher. There were some extremely rude students in his summer class and I'm sure they write horrible reviews. THIS IS COLLEGE EXPECT WORK. This really was an easy class if you are used to working for your grade. I think Goldstein is just adorable with his intense OCD. Record lectures.
Take this class in the summer!! Small class size, plus you get in-class problems and quizzes that are EXACTLY like exams. Its a ton of material and Goldstein can be persnickety, so make sure to talk to him often so you understand EXACTLY what he wants. Hard-earned but attainable "A".
One of the worst. Does not have specific exam dates "don't make plans for thanksgiving", and refuses make-ups/early exams no matter what. Lectures in 200+ person hall on whiteboard (no powerpoints) and expresses frustration when students ask questions, stopped bothering to help a student when he couldn't understand her accent, she was in tears
This professor writes in the board all the time. Not a single PowerPoint presentation. If you want to pass sit towards the front.
Mr. Goldstein, through my 6 years at university, was the worst teacher I had had the displeasure of learning under. I had him my first semester at ASU, year one, and his grading was vague and asinine. Vast majority of the kids fail through him, or drop out. His tutoring is lack luster, and his lectures involve nothing but chalkboard. Dont do it.
