This guy is AWSOME .. HE CURVES every test .. I got a 74 and that's a B+ !!! ain't that awsome ?!!
curves the grading on every test, one open book exam, funny - and hold your attention. likes to start class early tho.
Looks like Robert E. Lee.
Really a great teacher makes Economics Fun with Gr8 examples.. and easy to understand
Good professor, does a great job teaching a tough subject. He does a fair job by curving your exams, and not just a small curve, but like you can really go from a C to an A from the curve.
81 is an A in this class---NUFF SAID
nice and funny, but his class is hard. u can't just memorize the material; you actually need to understand it and be able to apply it...don't take econ unless u really need to take it for your major...
Reminds me of The Colonel from KFC. Even in a 7:30 AM class he is energetic and entertaining. He gives sample tests before the real test that model whats going to be on it. Expect massive curves; with his grading system you can F a test and still get a A!
not an excellent teacher, but grades so easy. If you're an econ major, do yourself a favor and take rustici, but if you don't care about learning the stuff and just want the grade, definitely take Holt. on some tests, low 80's are A's. holy crap...
We took like the whole semester to get through 4 chapters and the book he picked was awful. Sometimes he didn't even have class becuase he had to go out of town. Students in our class proctored the test. He does do alot of current events which is helpful.
reminds me of KFC colonel, tests are kinda easy and his curves are really helpful.
not an easy class to take at 7:30, you can skip his class a lot as long as you dont fall far behind with reading, review his practice tests and attend the class before each test to review. huge curve on each test so getting a C is not tough at all
Generous curve. However , must know material fairly well to do well in the course. Keep up on the reading, and show up to tests , and review sessions, and forget attending lectures, you can still do fairly well.
Get him as a teacher has awesome curves to the tests. You need to take the practice tests and sends you they help and READ!! Tests are not too bad especially for such a Hard class that you must take.
Great teacher. Explains stuff very well in class. Makes hard things in the textbook look more easy. Best teacher Ive had so far in microeconomics.
This teacher is a good pick. Interesting lectures, and he is a big curver on the exams ;) I like his grading scale, there's 4 tests and a final and each is 20%. Nice and simple. He'll actually tell you exactly what you need to do to pass his class.
He's a great teacher. Makes econ fun and interesting. His curves are almost too generous but you still need to know your stuff. I wouldn't say his tests are easy but rather reasonable. Just read the book and go to class and you'll manage.
Good class, funny teacher. DO NOT take 7:30 class... he's a good teacher and all but its hard to stay awake!
He is a good professor. He comes in early and explains the previous lectures in better detail, he has good practice exams, and is willing to help you if you need it. It was an okay class, he tried to make it funny... Don't take it in the early morning though (like, 7:30)...
very good teacher! very clear about what he expects for tests, even has practice tests to help. If you fall behind he reviews everything 30 mins b4 each class starts. nice guy, keeps it as interesting as possible. Definately reccomend him!
Hes a hard teacher..obsessed with doing anytype of mathematics possible to get his point across..even bridges things from Calculus which arent needed. 3 hours of his class once a week is hard to do but 730AM is probably worse. I managed to get a C+ and his curve is gracious but hes a hard teacher.
Awesome teahcer! I admit he is difficult, but read the book, come to class, and you should be fine.
class gets harder and harder as the semester progresses...take good notes and ask questions in order to get a good grade...his curves on quizzes are really helpful
He is a very good teacher and makes jokes to keep people awake and interested. Gives out sample tests which help out a lot when studying for his exams.
Has huge curves on his tests. Very nice and helpful. Gets to class 30min. early for individual questions. Only down side is his class is at 7:30am and it's really hard to stay awake.
Excellent professor
Easy class if you're not an idiot. The math is beyond simple. Just make sure you at least skim the chapters and you'll do fine. Oh, and the 3 hour class is excruciatingly boring.
This guy is awesome. I wish he taugh us Fnan 301 instead of Walpuck. Strongly recommend him, test are similiar to sample test and teaching style is great. You are in for an "A", if you just put in little effort.
Very nice and easy Professor. He uses huge curves. Very helpful and funny, makes the course interesting to learn. Take good notes & read the chapters before going to class, you will do good. I would highly recommend taking his class.
Overall outstanding teacher. There were many tests, but get the study guide from the bookstore and you will be fine.
Don't be fooled by his bow tie and suspenders. He looks mean and boring at first, but he ends up being pretty funny. The man wore a SIMPSONS watch from burger king. Study his sample tests really well and understand them. Don't be afraid to ask questions. He doesn't make anyone feel stupid no matter how easy the question may seem.
He CURVES! Curves help greatly. But my advice READ the chapters BEFORE class and you should be able to understand the lecture! Use study guides! I got a B-
easy class if you stay awake and pay attention to his lectures. He wants people to do well. He curves which is awesome. great professor. full of knowledge.
He is a very nice guy and very helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions. He likes to help students and wants them to do well. A lot of tests, tho. =(
I'm real tired at 7:30 in the morning, but the only reason I go to ECON is because I've got Holt. He's graphs and exmapls really help my visually to understand the material. He's always open to questions and not afraid to crack a joke here and there. Great professor.
suuuuuuuch a good teacher. Having him at 7:30 suchs, but because hes so good it doesnt bother me too much. hes a very good teacher and makes sure you understand everything. yes he curves his tests which is REALLY nice. theres 4 tests and a final. i highly recommend him.
Funny guy, really nice, very helpful. If you go to class, do the reading, and use all the resources he gives you, you'll do fine. The pre-class help sessions are also great. Definitely recommend him.
I had a lot of trouble waking up at 7:30 in the morning. I never went to class beside test days, I managed to fail every test, but with the curve I passed with a C...Great teacher, the curves are ridiculous. I highly recommend him. If you actually study, and go to class, it should be an easy A.
Good professor. Exams become tougher as they go on, but that is to be expected. Holt is very generous when it comes to curves. The class should be an easy A / B if you study the assigned chapters and attend class. He can make a somewhat boring chapter pretty entertaining by cracking a nerdy joke here and there. Recommended.
Waking up early is tough but the class is a joke. He has the largest curves I've ever seen. He's a good teacher also and he's very good at explaining. If you can pull 50's on the test, you'll get a C for his class. That's how good his curve is.
he does a great job at explaining everything
Hi is really GOOD professor, i totaly recomend him!! even if you have to wake up early its worth it he will make u smile :)
Very Fair, Go to class and the help sessions. If you are not a morning person this class is not for you. He is very helpful and will explain anything for you
Great teacher, this is my third time taking econ 103...econ is just not my thing, i have gotten D, F, and now that I am taking him, I am getting a B. His curves are insane. Waking up early is def. worth it.
He goes really fast..but hes ok not bad..if you're not a morning person dont take this class
one of my best professors at gmu! hes really funny, however his class was at 730am. i felt guilty for skipping his class! but is very helpful and has a generous curve!
Hands down one of the best professors at Mason.
Easiest prof. ever and one of the best ones
makes econ so easy! if you read the chapter and takes notes you WILL DO WELL!!! (...at least better than people with other professors!) it's a 7:30 class, but it is so worth it! wake up early and TAKE HIM !!!
Really nice guy, funny, makes the material very clear. I'd mos def recommend him over any of the other Econ professors.
nice guy, clear material, awesome curves. if you study, youll do fine. I never really used the textbook, just the study guide.
I love this guy! He makes economics so easy. The best curves on tests too. Don't take if you are not a morning person.
worth waking up for, if he didnt give us curves i would have failed
Very nice guy and if you pay attention in class you will do good.
It is pretty dry subject matter but he tries his best to make it interesting. He is a nice guy with nice bow ties. He gives generous curves but you have to study hard for the exams. They are all multiple choice and there are 5 of them. You don't really have to go to class, he gives you practice exams, and you need to read the book.
he's a great professor. He tries to make the class as interesting as possible and as long as you read the book and study then you should pass. Plus he curves the test scores so it's much easier to pass the course. I highly recommend him for econ. Good Luck!
holt is the sweetest old man i have ever met, yeah his class is early but its hella worth going to. curves like a mofo buy the study guide and study the old tests.
great professor! tries to make the lecture interesting and informative. i took a lot away from each lecture, just make sure you do the reading and come to class! he explains the chapters well so it helps a lot when it comes to the exams. 4 interim exams and 1 final cumulative exam and with sample tests provided it makes it much easier to study for
very difficult class. boring material. didn't learn anything. never taking anything like this again.
He's a very nice guy and pretty easy-even though you don't get anything from ECON before, he will make you understand..be sure to go to the review sessions and he curves a lot..overall easiest ever for ECON!
The class is not hard. He is a nice old man. Only talks examples on various topics in class, so it is easier if you read the book before the class. Try your best to attend classes because sometimes he gives shortcuts and talks some examples of tests in class. Attend his classes, read the book, and do the sample tests, you will get A in class.
The best thing about Professor Holt is that he looks exactly how professors in the movies look, it's hilarious. He's really nice and funny, but at 7:30 am, it's not enough to keep me awake. He curves tests like CRAZY though, so I've gotten a B with doing little work. Do not take this class if you are not a morning person, you will not go.
I never went to class. On the exam I studied a lot for, I got an A, on the exam I kinda studied for, I got a C, on the exam I didn't study for, I got a D. His curves are insane, if you don't really do anything for this class you'll probably get a C, if you actually try you should get an A.
Took him for 103...Good teacher to take if you're not going to major in ECON. He makes sure you understand the basics..Tests are ok..he curves and gives samples tests. He's also funny, and makes fun of himself all the time. Take him ABOVE ALL OTHER ECON PROCESSORS.
Great Professor. Definitely recommend taking this course with him. He will help anyone who needs help, and will curve so that you pass. I would wake up for his 7:30 am class and i can say that its worth it since other students would complain about their other econ professors. He is really good.
Is a fairly good teacher. If you pay attention in class and read the book it is very easy to keep up. Make sure to do the practice tests and you'll be set. Generously curves the tests. A fair grader, you get what you put into the class.
He is a very good professor! he is humorous, clear, interesting, active, at times sarcastic, and passionate about teaching. He'll make this class fun if you want to study!
i would recommend going to lectures even tho u might fall asleep. he does give some good examples of problems in class. curves a loooot. great, fair professor. take him!!
Highly recommended. Go to class for sure even though it may seem like you don't need to at first. The study guide is helpful as well. Does a review session before every test which is nice.
Great teacher! You can learn a lot from him, and enjoy the process. You have to work in this class, but you'll learn a lot, and Mr. Holt is very helpful.
He teaches clearly and his tests are fair. Don't expect it to be an easy A, but if you invest some time & study before tests, you'll get a good grade. Practically all the questions are someway a paraphrase of something inside the book. I studied about 2-3 hours before each test (read chapters & did practice tests) and got an A- for the final grade.
Highly recommended teacher. Teaches straight out of the book. Reviews are very helpful and emphasizes things you should really know to pass. Only 3 or 4 tests final exam included. Curves test and bumps your grade if your close to the next one. No hw or quizzes, if you study a couple hours for the tests you SHOULD pass.
I took this class during a 720-10pm period once a week. Biggest mistake I ever made. He's really boring and I couldn't sit through his lectures for the whole 2 hours and 40 minutes. He's a really easy prof though because of the curve. I passed his class because of the curve, but otherwise I wouldn't have because his teaching method is so bland.
to put it clear and simple...econ is a hard class, Mr. Holt does not make it easier, test are difficult if you dont do the reviews and go to tutoring, however, you WILL pass because of the BIG curve...slacker much? take it, and will get a C, study strong? you will get a B, B+. I dont discourage taking him, but i do know theres better professors
Class is VERY boring, he pretty much teaches off the slides from the book. Bennett is a lot more interesting to listen to. However, he does curve his tests.
Really frustrating. He doesn't teach, he just reads from the slides, word for word. Has not given any additional information, explanation, or example. I'm sure he's a good in a higher level course, but he is incapable of teaching an intro level class. Really nice man, just not a good teacher.
I took him for both Econ 103 & 104. He's a VERY good teacher for 103...lectures without slides, helps you get the material. If you read the text, you will get end with an A or B. For 104, I can't recommend him - he FAILS at teaching macroecon. He reads txtbk slides and is unclear. 104's tests are harder then 103's, but he generously curves in both.
For someone who routinely struggles with math, I found Dr. Holt's class very easy to follow. His explanations (he loves to use illustrative examples) were in plain language and made the material much easier to grasp. His snarky sense of humor didn't hurt, either. He grades on a generous curve, so a little effort goes a long way.
Look-This guys rocks...class is very straight forward...he tells you what is on the test...very good teach for people who HAVE to take econ but dont care about it. I had him for both 103 and 104 (got B+'s in both). Test are no that bad..and his curves are insanely generous. IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE ECON TAKE IT WITH HOLT!!
OMG- I hate economics, math, chemisrty, all that stuff, but if I had had MR. Holt in high school, WOW thats all I can say, I loved him. He gives sample tests & great lectures, and works hard to make sure You understand whats going on all you have to do is ask
Awesome!
so whoever said he curves is a lie. he def. stopped doing that if he ever did do it. I can't say he's a boring professor because it's hard to say any professor is entertaining in econ. tests are hard. gives practice exams but they are completely different than the exams. not much help.
He is a great professor. All you have to do is your readings and go to class. There are 5 tests and each are 20%. There are sample tests which are similar to the questions on the test. If you take econ 103 I highly recommend him because it won't be stressful you have a great time to read the chapters and just hang out and chill and you learn alot.
FANTASTIC Teacher! Mr. Holt is a great guy. He is always willing to help his students despite a large class size. He is a great teacher and I learned to love Economics during his 7:30 am class.
First off, Prof. Holts Economics 104 class is not hard to do well in. He has 5 exams, each worth 20% of the grade, and curves generously. The real issue is nothing is being learned. Classes consisted of reading off the slide and exams were multiple choice questions from the text. Nothing stimulating or college level. Also, he missed 4 classes.
I can't believe HOlt hasn't changed at all. i took him in Fall 2002 and according to others, he is still the same guy. the same old 7:30 am class, the same everything comes from the book. I must have skipped like all this classes and still got a B. if i had gone to class, this is a solid A. He is a decent guy. I had him for a 300 level class too
Love the suspenders, but either go to class or read the book. Both are not necessary. If you are good at teaching yourself, you get to miss out on a 3 hour class. Tests can be tough and definitely require studying!
Best Economic Teacher At Mason! After previously having a disastrous semester with Rustici (avoid at all costs). I took Mr. Holt's class and got an A on all but one test. The tests reflect what we studied in class and in the book. They are not difficult as long as you read what is assigned, come to each lecture, and study the material.
Not a very interesting professor, but he's nice and his class was easy. He gives you practice tests and goes over them, and tells you which questions will be on the exam. He also curves. Easy class!
Great teacher, no need to buy the book, he gives u a website with ppts of the book. Tests are pretty easy, just study and you will be fine. Explains anything very well
Extremely easy. He curves everything. If you read the chapters and attend class you will get an A.
Tests are harder than expected, but he curves them big time. If you can learn the concepts from the book, you don't need to go to class, but it helps. Prof is a nice, funny, old man that crack jokes at the class. Overall, a pretty easy and fun class.
Class wasnt to bad and wasnt mandatory but in order to get a good grade go to class an take notes they help! Learn the basic concepts and you'll do fine. He curves BIG time!
Great prof. A little boring sometimes but craks funny jokes and is a funny old man. Curves on every single test so its hard to fail. Read the book! If you do u will get an A. Also review the online powerpoints that he teaches from they really help you. TAKE HIM, you will not regret it!!!!
5 exams (about 50 questions) each 20% of your grade each on 4 chapter of textbook except final which is cumulative. He curves generously & although attendance is not mandatory - if you go to the class before the test he will review specifically what you need to know so definitely go to the review. Between the review and reading you should get an A
Prof Holt's a really nice, old guy. There are only 4 exams (25% ea). He provides previous semester's exams to study from, and he goes over the exam material the week before exam, and on exam day too. during first half of class. It's important to stay on top of reading, but his exams aren't that hard. and he curves very generously. take him for sure
Great Prof. Lectures can be dull but he knows what he is teaching if you listen. Only 4 exams, no homework. Provides samples tests to study from which help a lot. Sometimes reviews before the tests and curves all 4 exams! Best prof to take Econ with!
If your one of those people that likes classes that are almost independent study, you'll like this. He is a nice guy, old, funny, but extremely boring! Out of 250 students, over 200 walk out of every lecture cause it's that boring. You can pass without attending a single class and just reading the textbook. But he's nice!
Somewhat boring but a nice guy who cracks sarcastic and dry jokes when you don't expect it. Tests relatively easy with a generous curve.
I was VERY disappointed by professor Holt. His class consists of him speeding through powerpoint slides that are word for word from the book; usually only 1/3 the class shows up. The tests are fairly difficult with specific details but he curves about 10%. I ended up skipping classes and reading the book to understand the material. Got an A.
he's good
Get ready to work. Mr. Holt's class requires alot of studying time and preparation before taking the actual exam. If you keep up with the readings, Do the practice test , and attend class, you should do fine. There are only 4 exams including the final, no quizzes or homework. Pretty nice guy, knows what he's talking about.
My first Econ class and it was difficult. Must be prepared to self-study because you won't get any personal attention. Over 200 students in auditorium classroom. No personal interaction with teacher. Prof. doesn't recommend study guide, but I ended up buying it anyway as a study aide to help myself. Couldn't understand anything in lectures.
This class was tough. Don't go to any of the lectures. They aren't worth it. Don't buy the textbook. All the info you need is in the powerpoint slides which are posted online.
Took Econ 103 and 104 with him after failing Rustici. Exams were much simpler and straightforward. Example questions are very similar and sometimes identical to exam questions. Low one-on-one interaction. Many students were able to study the book and not come to his lectures. Curves all exams. If you put forth the effort you need, you will be fine
He's probably the best choice for microeconomics. theres no hw. he gives out practice tests and curves all 4 tests. READ THE BOOK, it will help you alot.
Simply awful; if you want a good grade for learning nothing, this is the prof for you. Slow lectures, repeats himself often, teaches for the dumbest in the room. He never can get people to stop talking so there's immense background noise during every lecture. Ended up just studying the practice exams and only showing up for tests, still got an A.
Horrible. Boring as ever. If you do 3 hour lectures well and like to pay attention go ahead and take his class, but otherwise, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
His lectures are very long and boring but he gives out practice test that are kind of similar to the test. He does curve all the tests which is awesome but I'm telling you, if you take his class, read the book! Don't treat it like it's easy cause it's not.
He curbed each exam about 20 points up on average. You don't have to show up to class with the exception of exam days. It's impossible to not get at least a B in this class. One of those classes you're thankful for/ashamed that this an alleged "accredited' college course.
EASY A, THOUGH THE PROFESSOR WAS KIND OF BORING. READ THE BOOK AND THE SAMPLE TEST, YOU WILL BE FINE!
Not an easy class. More than 30% failed the exams. READ THE BOOK! choose another if you can.
i went to every lecture and believe me it was BORING but still, studied hard and got a 24/50 -.- everyone failed the majority of class got below 20 !!! and didnt even curve.. avoid at all cost ;(
The first exam wasn't even hard. Only 13% of the class (240 people) got above an 80. Then again the majority of the class are freshman. Just put in the hours and you'll get an A.
3 exams, including the final, make up the sum of your grade. Attendance is useless, he reads verbatim from slides. Read the chapters make a cal. to keep your self on track. 1st exam was ch 1-9, 2nd exam 10-15, and 16-19 were for the remainder to be on the cumulative final. Most didn't do well. If you can take Dr. B - I suggest you to do so.
You basically have to teach yourself this class, he is not the best lecturer, he is really old, so it's hard not to fall asleep. He does answer questions. His exams are okay, nothing too tricky or wordy, it's if you know the material or not. I recommend going to class, cause Econ is hard and you need it all repeated in your head over and over.
Not the best lecturer. It was very difficult to pay attention to him for a 3 hour class. I found his exams to be worded in a confusing manner. If you teach yourself the material you will probably do fine.
I loved Professor Holt! If you are a serious student, I would suggest taking him - he covers a great deal of information is a relatively short amount of time, but he is by far the best econ professor at Mason - though that isnt saying much.
a true disappointment. passed, but had trouble with this prof's language usage. Do not think he is suited to teach... What is his background in teaching?? understand this is new with him.. pls review his skills.
Econ is dry anyway, but Prof Holt made it understandable, interesting, and funny. It was a very hard class. I did have to study hard, and take careful notes, but it was understandable thank to Prof Holt, and it you put the effort in you could pretty easily get an A, which I did. Knuckle down and get ready to learn. You'll come out better for it
Prof Holt just boring... not inspirational. Dreaded this class and his performance.. Like a dance routine.. Do not think he has the background for this study.. I learned more just talking about the subject.. Pls review and dismiss...
