tends to go off on tangents, doesn't explain very well. +: he gives many makeups
No Comments
This guy is just rediculous. He treats the class like a group of fellow mathematicians to whom he is trying to prove his greatness. He flies through problems without stopping and never gives clear answers to students' questions. Avoid him at all costs
I can't stand this guy. You can't get anything out of him. The only good thing are remake tests which are harder than the first one. I can get A's in any class but his.
This guy couldn't make the class any easier! He does so many examples and gives you solutions to anything you can't figure out. Makeups on exams all the time, if you mess up his class, it's your fault.
He didn't lag behind for people didn't want to pay full attention to what was going on. All his assignments were very straight forward. The subject matter is difficult, but what are you going to do?
He's the nicest guy ever. I wish he's my grandpa. :)
The most abhorrible teacher I've ever had. When you ask him something he doesn't know, he'll come up with an excuse for not answering it. Eighty percent of everything he says is about other courses and "the people in building 70." It's impossible to learn anything from this man.
this guy is nuts, he seems like a good person and all but he doesnt explain a thing that he is doing and it drives me crazy, like we're all just supposed to know?
He sucks, I ask him a question.. about MATH (you know.. what he's supposed to be teaching) and he starts talking about building 70. I love math, and I am usually awesome at it... except with him.
Never talkes about what he is doing on the board. Cant get his mind off of fortran. doesn't particularly understand how anyone could not understand what he is teaching so he repeats himself instead of clearifying. didnt assign work at all really and rattles on about the beurocracy here at RIT. spent 1st week of class talking about the change in the calculus sequence course numbers.
Terrible, "is that true?" Awful teacher, "it's just those people in building 70". "Now I'm getting into trouble aren't I?" take the class if you like the above phrases, otherwise don't bother because he repeats those instead of teaching
Do not take this professor. After the first week I tried to transfer out to another section but the others were full. He just rambles about random stuff and course sequences. He repeats his jokes at least 50 times and he teaches in a way that you cant relate to the book. He stomps around the room in his boots and is the worst teacher I have ever ha
Oh dear god run for your life, this man will destroy your ability to do even the most elementary of math. He is terrible, and yes he does say "is that true?", and talks NON-stop about people in building 70, so unhelpful, i UNLEARNED discrete II. Run! Fast! Dont look back, rivals bad teaching ability with gruber!!!!
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GUY TALKING ABOUT? Chicken scratch on the board, rambles all over the place, makes no sense, makes jokes at things that are not really funny. Makeup tests are nice, but don't make up for the fact that you don't have a real teacher.
BAD! For your sanity (and your grade as well) run for your life. "is that true?" is heard at least about 5 times a day in the most random places. Makes bad jokes and goes on irrelevant tangents. Almost always does the textbook make more sense than him. Unfortunately, the reverse never happens. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!

Nice person, but what class is he really teaching? He's talked about anything from movie reviews to roman history. He starts out on something that we are supposed to learn, then ends up somewhere else, maybe even philosophy. dont take his class.
Good:He is a very nice and EASY to get good grades. We had 8 easy tests and he only counted best 5. All our homework was for bonus points. Bad: Can be quiet. His writting is messy. Doesn't move through material fast enough or explain that well. Expects you to learn it by watching him do examples. Gets sidetracked. I am now expert on bld 70!
hes a good guy in person, never stops rambling on about usless information, and the math majors. quizzes are fairly easy. doenst explain what he's doin on the board to well, and when he does doesnt make to much sence.
Where do I begin? Elmer rambles forever, doesn't grade too fairly, homework doesn't help that much, scribbles all over the board everyday. If you don't understand his material, your not the first. he won't stop talking about the people in building 70, he obviously hates them, and will make sure you know this at least once a day. Good luck...
Horrible... this man rambles on and on about nothing. He had to sub for one of my teachers for two weeks and when he gets bored he starts new topics even if you don't understand them. He is very boring and is terrible at explaining anything. I thought his ramblings may be entertaining, but that's so far from the truth! Stay Away from Young!!
I gave up his class after the third week as I knew I was going NOWHERE with his class. He keeps on talking about "blg 70" and all sort of stuff that just makes no sense AT ALL. He scribbles stuff on the board which NO ONE in the class can understand....the only thing I can say is that STAY AWAY FROM HIM!!!!!!!!!!
This guy is a joke. One of the worst I've ever had. Can't understand him at all, let alone follow the notes. Good luck because you will need it if you take anything from this guy. STAY AWAY!
Absolutely Horrible!!! He rambles all class long. He can't clarify when questions are asked, so he repeats himself, and if you still don't get it, I can't count the number of times he's said "I don't know what to tell you." My whole class is lost during lectures. Save yourself a major headache do what it takes to avoid this guy.
Honestly, First week and a half of class, I couldn't understand the man. After that, it clicked. Enjoyed the class, and he was very concerned that students understood material before he would quiz us on the material. I can see him not being for all students though.
Pretty easy, quizzes every Friday. Handouts pretty much told you what was on each quiz
I've only been to 2 classes so far, and I can already tell that this is the class I will hate. This guy rambles on about things that have nothing to do with the class, goes so fast through the material that NO ONE in the class gets it, and doesn't answer any of our questions clearly. UGH.
For at least two or three weeks I could not understand or catch on, towards the end of the quarter I got it. Unfortunately I learned more in 1 hour per week in the Math lab than I did 4 hours a week with this man. I think he grades fairly, and might be one of the easier graders.
Should not be teaching. Takes points off if you don't follow his little quirks even if you are technically right. Does not really focus, goes off on tangents and is really too old to be teaching.
Goes off on tangents all the time. I think he thinks that he is teaching history. He says something will not be on the quiz but will keep on talking about it forever. He voice also is wicked monotone. Not the teacher to have if you want to stay awake in class
Prof. Young isn't really a good teacher per se, but if you get math and want to breeze through with almost no work then he is awesome. Class is not mandatory, if you know it just come for the tests. If you learn quick, his handouts cover everything on the weekly quizzes. If you're stupid, avoid him at all costs.
Had him for Discrete II. He rambles on about random stuff including philosophy, building 70, and makes unfunny jokes that make no sense. He hands out a bunch of worksheets everyday that no one does. He is horrible at answering students questions and never seems to understand what anyone is trying to say (and no one understands what he is saying)
Very difficult to follow; he progresses through the material very fast and concentrates more on demonstrating proofs for a concept than explaining that concept so students can understand. Not recommended unless you can learn the material all on your own.
I can't decide whether he's a horrible or great teacher based on the fact that I got an A and didn't understand his lectures. Either way, he's really easy grader and gives no homework for Discrete I. If you want to learn something, I suggest taking someone else.
My theory is Young does crack! Do not take this course without a friend or a personal tutor because his teaching is so bad. TIPS FOR PASSING: his quizes have what you learned the week before and the prior quiz. Do all of his worksheets and understand them because those are how to quizes will look. You grade is based only on quizes and the final.
He is absolutely crazy, one class he said pigeon over and over for five minutes. He often spoke of being abducted by aliens and purple cows. He hands out more worksheet than you can handle, but you don't have to go to class and his tests are easy.
I didn't actually learn much in class, he's hard to follow sometimes. I survived the class by sitting with friends. Do the worksheets though, and you'll do fine on the quizzes and final... although you may have to do some studying on your own if you expect to understand everything.
Often writes with 4 colors at the same time. Most of the material was basic arithmetic, but he wasn't very good at arithmetic. Class was extremely easy though, it was just arithmetic really, one test per week, lowest two dropped.
If you're coming into RIT with proramming experience and a solid background in math his Discrete 1 class is an easy A. Just don't bother talking to him... he mutters and goes off on tangents and constantly talks about Pepsi machines, but is possible to follow if you put some effort into it. No homework, easy quiz every Friday, and very generous with partial credit. Didn't use the textbook, don't buy it unless you're planning to take Discrete 2 with a different prof.
He goes on tangents occasionally, but is generally a good teacher. His homeworks (not graded, he just recommends doing the problems) are usually very similar to the test questions. Plenty of office hours if you're stuck on something
Extremely easy A if you know what you're doing on the tests. The lectures are as clear as you'd expect any lecture to be, the guy's a lot of fun. He makes a lot of mistakes, so pay attention and don't be afraid to let him know. He's crazy, but he's smart and it was a good class to take.
I did most of my studying from the book. His handwriting is quite a challenge to read and he spends a ridiculous amount of time going off on tangents. I recommend another professor who gives more homework, which is the best way to learn discrete math.
One of the worst professors I've had at RIT. He is very difficult to follow and understand. He "teaches" you how to do something once and then proceeds to go through examples really fast afterward. He's not very good with answering questions and he can't seem to ever stay on topic. My Advice: DO NOT TAKE DISCRETE MATH WITH ELMER YOUNG.
One of the worst teachers i have ever had. "You know this game" seems to be his tagline, however many of us were left clueless as he never made sense and constantly made mistakes and got himself off topic all the time
He is a very good teacher if you have a strong backround in mathematics. He does go on little rants that may last no longer than 2 minutes on pointless stuff but he is an easy teacher. He'll take 6/8 highest quizzes so if you mess up you get some redemption.
He is an alright professor. He knows math but makes alot mistakes. His grading system is simple:he counts only 6/8 quizzes & the final exam.He gives homework that won't count but he recommends you do them.DO THEM!They are helpful for the quizzes. Also he does go off topic alot.He may mention about purple cows.Go to him or look on internet if need help
Second time having Young, had him for Discrete 1. He likes to go off tangent and makes mistakes. To succeed in his class, make sure you practice his problems on the worksheets he hands out. Just do them, and his weekly quizzes are a breeze, easy 27-30/30 on them. Grading is simple. He only counts 6/8 best quizzes and then the final. He's alright
He's an Ok teacher. People are correct in the fact that he goes off on random tangents. However, if you do the examples and ask questions he will explain them. He'll sometimes start to answer a question before you're done asking it, so if he answers the wrong thing, just interrupt and finish your question.
He babbles on and on and doesn't answer questions well. You can tell he's trying but he fails. There is a lot of textbook use if you can't understand him but if you can understand him and his lectures than you don't even need the book.
Probably one of my favorite professors so far. He sometimes went off on tangents, but it wasn't excessive. If anything, it kept me engaged. The grade for Discrete I consisted of weekly quizzes, a mid-term, and a final. He did give optional homework, which he went over in class, but I never did any of it. As long as you pay attentoin, he's great.
Do not take unless you enjoy a teacher who states he is slightly illiterate, can't go past 2*2 in arithmetic and constantly rambles about nonsense material regarding physics, calculus, coding in FORTRAN, making taking attendance mandatory and his inconsistent office hour schedule.
If only I had listened to these comments before signing up for this class. His random tangents are pretty much the basis of his class. He writes what can be confused with hieroglyphics on the board. Please heed my warning for the sake of your own sanity. I didn't believe these comments til I experienced this myself. Just walk away... Fast!!!
Elmer Young is an excellent person, but a horrid teacher. He knows exactly what he is doing, but makes mistakes moreso than not. I do great in the class because his worksheets teach me through mistakes more than he teaches. Freshmen students are FORCED to get what they get, in which case enjoy a daily dose of, "My sense is..." And other one liners.
Very confusing when teaching, makes numerous mistakes even when the students are correct, never gives homework which you would think is nice but you cannot pass without outside help and studying.
Professor Young has a habit of aimlessly rambling on while scrawling down nearly unintelligible notes. I had to choose between listening to what he was saying or getting the notes written down in time. Get a tutor if you're not good at math and want to pass.
Had him for Discrete Math for Computing. Assumed we knew half the material and skimped on explanations in favor of long drawn out and irrelevant proofs. The textbook he assigned was infinitely more useful than he was. Avoid him if you can, especially the night class, could hardly stay awake trying to pay attention
Absolutely awful professor. His 'explanations' involve spending 20 minutes on a proof that is impossible to follow or understand. He doesn't know how to answer questions without going off on tangents, and then concluding with "I don't know how to answer that". Book is much more useful than he is, but he does daily quizzes, so you still have to go
Not too bad, but he constantly goes on and on about Math department dramarequirementshistorical figures in mathematics in sometimes incoherent ramblings. The biggest issue though is the note-taking, as he is constantly writing things, erasing before you can finish, and covers a lot of material that is not tested or required.
The headache is, you have to understand Professor Young to succeed in his class. He is an extremely smart man, with a funnydistracting sense of humor. He really does teach well if you have the patience to sit and listen to his lectures. Don't let the algebraic trickery fool you, everything on the board makes sense. It's an easy A if you practice.
I know Elmer Young tries to teach but i just can't understand what he saying! I have to use the text book or ask for my class mates for help in order to understand how to do these math problems. The nice thing about Elmer is that he gives us the most easiest quizzes and tests.
Very nice guy but is very confusing. Writes all over board with bad handwriting and doesn't explain well. Wastes time talking about math dept. politics and changes in curriculum. The best thing about his class is that you don't need to know most of what he teaches, you only need to know basic problems which he reinforces well with worksheets
Elmer is a great guy, but he can be a little confusing with his bad penmanship. He can be distracting at times, but when he does explain the material, you should listen. The people who had the most trouble in his class were the ones on their phones and their laptops. Calc is very straightforward, just make sure you know the material and do homework
It doesn't matter if you pay attention or not because he's very tough to follow. Unclear in explanations and does long examples to realize he was wrong in the beginning. Always refers to headaches and trickery. He's full of both. Ask him a question and he'll say he doesn't like to think about it. But you want to to understand it.
Cons: Quizzes every week, doesn't follow his own syllabus, answers questions poorly, and rambles about textbooks when the class is confused about his messy work up on the board. Pros: Nice guy, basic questions on quizzes, knows the material very well .
He was so disorganized that he sometimes confused us with another class and gave us the wrong assignments. Graded assignment everyday in class, quizzes every week, and he scribbles on the board in a random fashion making it very hard to follow along. Only way to learn the subject material in his class is to put your nose in the book
He's pretty straight forward. You have to pay attention in class and follow along as he works out problems. He's not the best at explaining and will sometimes make mistakes. He's a nice guy, not so great at teaching though. If you don't understand it the first time around, it's up to you to work it out yourself pretty much. Tip: Do the hw!
You ask a question and he goes completely off on a tangent. He ends up not even answering your own question, very frustrating.
He'll write something on the board, but it's hard to follow. His verbal explanations quickly veer towards discussion of math department politics or the weather. At the end he just says "so that's how you do it," without ever explaining why he did what he did to reach his answer. When asked a question, his answers are unrelated to the question asked
While most of these reviews are true, this is by far one of the strangest and yet caring professors I've ever taken. I was in a situation where I had missed nearly 70% of the quizzes and classes and he let me make up ALL of them! He loves to ramble about conspiracy theories. He's out there but knows his stuff. Be adamant when asking questions!
He' a nice guy but bad at teaching. No homework. Only weekly quizzes and final. The quizzes and the final are not hard. As long as you pay attention in class, this course should be an easy A.
Very nice guy, but he is hard to understand during his lectures. His grading criteria is very clear, and he isn't a hard grader, but if you struggle with math, it is hard to learn much from his lectures.
His handwriting is challenging to read, he goes off on tangents, but he is absolutely hilarious and an easy class to pass. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
If I'd walked into this class knowing Calc II, I would have passed easily. Since I walked in not knowing it, there was no way I was going to learn it from him. He's very nice, but not particularly useful as a teacher. Handwriting hard to read, goes quickly. RIT mandates no more than 4 missed classes for grade higher than C
His lectures mad no sense. He talks really fast and has a habit of going on rants in the middle of solving a problem.
Easy A, no hw, lectures suck but for the class i had we had weekly workshops that we did all of our learning from. Good guy
Professor Young's handwriting can be hard to understand and he goes at a very fast pace. I think this is because he assumes the students did the homework (it is optional), even though many of us didn't. If you do the homework, the class will work out well for you. The quizzes and tests are just comprehension questions, not trying to trick you.
I think he's a nice enough person, but his class is incredibly tough for someone who has minimal calculus knowledge. He constantly references concepts expecting us to already know them, but I didn't because I had never taken a calculus class before. And if you ask him a question, he goes off on a tangent about something else. No study guides either
Writes a lot without giving a chance for students to ask questions. He knows the material very well but because of that he writes and talks very quickly; this along with him blocking the part of the board he writes on and hard-to-read handwriting makes it difficult to copy notes and listen to him at the same time. He also erases notes frequently.
My only compliant with Dr. Young is that we had 4 grades total (3 exams and a final). Dr. Young cared about teaching Complex Variables in a clear way that can be applied to whatever situation is needed. Be aware, Dr. Young likes to ramble on about the inter workings of the math department but if you pay attention to everything, you will learn math.
He is a great teacher and a great person. He does go fast, but if you read the text book and do problems along side his lectures you will be fine. He does ramble about different things at times but it usually connects back to what he is teaching.
If you have a solid understanding of calculus before coming into this class, it will be a breeze. Weekly quizzes/exams starting around week 3. No collected homework, but occasional emails are sent out with suggested practice problems from the textbook. If you have never taken calculus before, he can be hard to understand.
There is a method to his madness. I still don't know how to do multivariable calc, but I somehow have an A in his class. All of his exams are based off of workshops (for attendance) and the weekly quizzes. when in doubt take a derivative and you'll get half credit on anything
Had a week of class with him and knew I had to drop
gives test every week and has long lectures that are boring. has really bad handwriting so it is difficult to read what he writes on the board.
His lectures were nearly impossible to follow, no matter how much you were paying attention. If you actually want to learn calculus, it wont be from him. I had to bury my nose in a textbook and teach myself. He tended to ramble on about politics or the weather and when asked a question, you received another rant that didnt provide you an answer.
I had this guy for 1 lecture as a substitute on literally my third day of college, and it was low key traumatic. He was constantly going off on tangents, his handwriting was illegible, and I was sitting there in horror, ending with almost no notes. Was relieved when the rest of the class was as freaked out as I was. Not taking him again
Lectures were extremely hard to follow. He often got distracted and would go off on tangents about things that had no relation to the content. He was very understanding and would agree to let you make up assignments/quizzes, but would take weeks to give you the make-up. Can find the textbook free online, you'll definitely need to read it.
If I didn't take Calc 1 in HS I would not have passed this class. His lectures were hard to follow. Read the textbook if you actually want to learn. His class is predictable. Do a worksheet in class, quiz online, and a worksheet during the workshop (over Zoom for me). You get to work with others during the workshop.
Prof. Young is an incredibly nice man and you can tell he wants his students to succeed. However, his lecture style is bland and was unhelpful. He will start throwing numbers together to do problems for the entire lecture. Started skipping class and taught myself the entire course with the book. Weekly quizzes/exams boost your grade.
He lacks an understanding of what his students know and already have instruction on. Explains complex ideas as if they are easy concepts that everyone understands and gets as easily as he does. Grading is all online multiple choice so no partial credit, however exams are very similar to questions done in class. Moves very very fast in class.
Imaging a math Prof with a bad handwriting. The pace of lectures is fast. I learned the materials from searching. Most of the quizzes, exams, and final are true/false answers.
I wish I could give Professor Young a better rating. He's a nice guy, very accessible, and I do think he cares about his students. But he's not the best teacher. Lectures are confusing, fast, and full of tangents. There's a quiz every week, and it's clear what's on it (if you ask). He doesn't assign homework, but he will suggest practice problems.
Ask questions. His lectures are tangent ridden; if you're confused on something, the best thing to do is ask. Professor Young cares about your success. If you ask a question, he will likely answer it, but it will be riddled in tangents. Don't panic, just reel him back in and ask for a straight answer. You'll get it eventually. He's also really nice
Overall awesome guy, but he's got so much math knowledge that sometimes he goes off on tangents that do not pertain to your class. Super open to students correcting him, stopping him to ask him to write neater, and asking direct questions to pull an answer from him. As with all professors, office hours help with Professor Young.
Elmer Young is a brilliant person, but his teaching lacks. He speaks quickly and quietly and his handwriting is something of a new language to decipher. Quiz every Friday, 3 tests plus the final exam. No actual homework which was nice, but most of the time we had no clue what topic he was even covered on a given day. unnecessarily confusing class
The only reason I made it through is because I watched a lot of calculus youtube videos. You often leave lectures feeling confused and the workshops made by TA's sometimes have little relation to what he taught. Test and quiz questions are straightforward and you get a feel for the style and structure of questions. Needs to teach in simpler terms
Lectures are confusing but if you can figure out the workshops you'll be fine for exams and quizzes
Professor Young has such a bad rating, but he's not that bad. His lectures are a bit confusing and all over the place at times, but he gets the content to you. The content on the weekly quizzes is always told ahead of time, and reflects the workshops done in class. He is very honest and caring and wants his students to truly do well in the subject.
Lectures are terrible, so confusing, his handwriting is impossible to read. Tests and quizzes are really easy though. I learned almost nothing and got an easy A. The homework is optional and I didn't do any of it.
Professor Young was a great person, but overall, not a good teacher. Going on random tangents during class, horrible handwriting, grades stuff badly, such as marking correct answers incorrect. However, a good thing Professor Young had going for him was that he was very open to helping students, and correcting his mistakes.
This professor was all over the place and does not explain things well. Also very quiet. I would never recommend.
Very fair and solid quizzes, workshops, and exams, done at the end of classes to ease student stress, and very usable as prep materials. However, don't expect MyCourses organization or any form of lecture engagement, and though the material is easy to pick up on, much of it is taught under the assumption that it is a review for all students.
His handwriting and style did take a bit of time to get the hang of, but he was very good with going over quizzes and providing extra study material. Not too hard. A lot of the details like vocabulary were gone over in lectures, but not on the final. He is very down-to-earth and genuinely cares.
Professor Young's lectures can be a little difficult to follow, but there is no work other than tests and quizzes. The material is not complicated, but you spend a lot of time jumping between different topics. He also spends time giving commentary on various other topics. Only get the textbook if you are struggling to learn the material in class.
Young loves to ramble. His lectures are hard to follow. He loves to start three problems at the same time, tell some stories, finish one, then move on. He is not a tough grader, but you will have to teach yourself the material. He doesn't really pay attention to the class so it's a good study time. Wholesome man though, I definitely adore him.
His lectures make you understand less than you did before. What's nice is that there isn't any homework except for the project. If you have taken calc before, just zone out during his lectures and you'll be fine. Wouldn't recommend this as a first calc class. The cengage textbook is really great and comprehensive, so read it if you get confused.
His writing is sloppy and fast it's almost like learning a language. He'll go over a topic once during class and he expects everyone to know it. Whenever you ask him a question, he doesn't provide a quick answer; he'll go off on a vague tangent and you won't be provided with a clear answer. You're better off teaching yourself if you want to pass.
You'll probably struggle if you don't have prior knowledge of the subject. He teaches like his class is a review. His writing is barely legible, and you might have to take pictures of the board because he erases fast. Prepare to do a lot of independent studying and practicing.
Optional homework, lectures can take getting used to because they can be difficult and are boring, tests and quizzes were easy compared to other classes, cares about his students so he makes himself accessible outside of class.
This professor mainly just writes on the whiteboard all class and expects you to follow along even though he doesn't always articulate his thoughts process.
He's the worst, take literally anyone else. He has the hand writing of a child and explains thing terribly. I would never take this guy again!
I mean in this in the most respectful way but he can't teach well. His lectures are really all over the place and if you have no prior knowledge of the subject then you're pretty much out of luck. His handwriting has to be the worst I've ever seen from any professor and he knows it's bad, he doesn't take his time to make sure its readable.
Professor Young was my favorite math professor that I've had. His handwriting is perhaps a bit messy but still entirely legible. His explanations are great and even if you didn't understand it, just ask him to explain it again. He understands questions perfectly fine and always helped to make me understand the topic. Plus homework was optional.
I took calc I and currently I'm taking calc II with Dr. Young and overall it's 50-50. If you learn to read his handwriting you shouldn't have a difficult time. Sit in the front of the class and ask if him to clarify what he has written; it's not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be.
very poor lectures, rarely explains what he is doing and instead just writes down things on the board hoping you can keep up. on the upside, he grades very leniently, as long as you are able to keep up with the concepts being presented on your own time (or somehow absorb the info through his haphazard lectures), you should get a good grade here.
Prof. Young is a very kind old man, who truly cares about his students. He doesn't blame the student for his mistakes, and is very generous on makeup quizzes and whatnot. Still, he is very quiet and hard to follow at times. I would recommend sitting near the front to hear him properly. Answering questions is a little bit of a maze with him too.
Lectures awful. Don't ask questions in class because he will just dance around the answer with out saying anything. Nice guy but not a great teacher what so ever. TERRIBLE Handwriting, better of learning from youtube videos then actually going to class
By far the worst Teacher I have ever had. Judging by his ratings on here, he should have been fired 2 decades ago. His handwriting is unreadable, his explanations are incomprehensible, and he is extremely out of touch. Avoid him at all costs. If you are unlucky enough to have him, just read the book during class if you want to learn anything.
I would rather smash my gonads in a waffle iron then take this professor again. Now that I have your attention, Professor Young is one of the worst math professors at this school. His lectures are incoherent at best and his handwriting is illegible. Learning from this man is nearly impossible. He does not explain things well -- even to his own CA.
He was fine - bad handwriting and wasn't exactly mentally all there but he seems like he tries his best and has a odd but charming sense of humor. He got floppy disks and newspapers stacked in his office and won't stop talking about the old days but if you can get past that then he's a competent professor, just probably not the best fit for most.
He is kind of wacky and silly but is a terrible professor. Workshops are mandatory for attendance and are so much more difficult compared to the lecture material. Lectures are fast and disorganized handwriting is also abhorrent. Quizzes every week but are a lot easier than the workshops so as long as you know the general ideas you should do well.
One of the worst teachers at RIT, his lectures are horrible. His handwriting is terrible and the workshops are way harder than what he goes over in the lectures. Easy quizzes and tests but you will be learning off of youtube, not in the lecture. Wouldn't recommend. Although, there is no homework outside of class...
If you have already taken calc 2 and didnt get credit for some reason this is the ideal class he doesnt send homework and tests are kinda easy, he does have an strange way of teaching work, which isnt in the curriculum, which you need to know for his tests
Dr. Young is the friendliest person you can meet but he cannot explain calculus 2 in a way that new students can understand. His handwriting is usually legible but sometimes it is extremely difficult to decipher. It's a tough class time wise but if you read the textbook and practice from that you can do a lot better than I did. See tutors in bates.
Young means well but that doesn't carry across. His handwriting is illegible and hard to decipher. If you can't switch out, pick a good seat (front row, middle of room) to see the board better. Weekly quizzes and daily workshops. Never checked hw and you can make up quizzes whenever, he's very understanding. Free outside of class, but unhelpful.
Dropped out the first week because he had the worst handwriting I have ever seen. I have never gotten below an A in a math class, but I knew I would FAIL if I took his class because I could not follow the lecture AT ALL due to completely illegible writing. If we can be penalized for poor handwriting, then professors should be held accountable, too.
Just hopping on here to tell you this man speaks absolute gibberish, handwriting is illegible. Was in his class for a total of two days before I dropped because I didn't want to teach myself the entire course. Only graded on quizzes and exams, but he dumbs them down so his class grade average stays high so he remains a professor here.
Terrible lecturer. Speaks in gibberish and has unintellgible handwriting. Once you get over the learning curve of having to teach yourself everything (which you will have to continue to do), the content is incredibly easy. He gives softball questions on tests and quizzes. Dont miss class, there are daily attendance quizzes and weekly actual quizzes
bad handwriting, I'm mainly learning via YouTube. The class that I had was only an hour, so there was time for review of last class's worksheet/quiz, current lecture, and today's worksheet/quiz. not much time for anything else. He goes really fast, so write down as much as you can read or take pics
No homework, easy tests and quizzes. Only problem is his lectures kinda suck but if you do the problems he gives you in the textbook you will be beyond ready for the easy tests and quizzes.
Political Science Professor Sarah Burns is the daughter of the CIA Director. You should bring her flowers and candy everyday and be very nice to her.
Did not enjoy this class. Professor Young means well, but he does not teach well. Nobody understands what is going on. If you teach yourself, you'll be fine since he makes his exams and quizzes easy. 95% of class time he's on a tangent about having to run from the math department during finals week so they don't force him to make his final harder.
He gives the easiest possible questions on his exams. He's a really funny and upbeat person.
He's just a chill guy
Professor Young is a very kind person. However, teaching calculus isn't his strong suit. His lectures are disorganized, don't expect to learn anything from them. His saving grace is that his exams and quizzes are easy if you're able to teach yourself the concepts on your own, and there's no homework. If you struggled with calc 1, do not take Young.
Was a very nice guy, but his writing was illegible and lectures were confusing. Test and quiz questions are very easy once you understand the topics, but understanding those topics can be difficult without watching YouTube videos outside of class. Nice guy, but not the best professor
Dr. Young spends a lot of time on very few subjects and leaves the rest for a very short time. There is no homework and your whole grade is determined based on weekly quizzes and 3 tests distributed throughout the semester. His lectures are almost impossible to follow because of his bad handwriting and his office hours are not particularly helpful
While he seems to care about his students and wants to see them succeed, his lectures are disorganized, he speaks very quietly, and his handwriting is indecipherable much of the time. Needless to say, self-study is a must when taking one of his classes.
Professor Young began the class by explaining all that was wrong with this class, including his illegible handwriting and no mandatory homework. He then proceeded to not act on any during the course. If you are cursed by having to take him, prepare to learn Calc II yourself as there are no notes and you have to learn off of his hideous examples.
Elmer Young is the worst teacher I have had at RIT. His idea of a lecture is doing 20 example problems on the board with no explanation, moving so quick that his already hideous handwriting deteriorates into a mess of lines and he makes mistakes. His legit response to questions in class is to shrug his shoulders. Tests are easy. No HW, weekly quiz.
No. 190 is easy but don't take it with Dr. Young. He is a very kind man and is very accessible but does not teach well at all. His notes aren't very legible and his lecture style is too technical. I had to teach myself most of the course material and still barely scraped by. Choose a different section for this class.
Seems like a nice enough guy, but he is very tough to understand. He writes everything on a whiteboard in illegible handwriting, and talks while facing the whiteboard, making it hard to hear him. It's hard to understand what he's saying, and he isn't the best at explaining things to students. Dropped this class, and new professor is much better
I had an easy time in his class but I very much see why other people would have a hard time. Handwriting is on par with a 3 year old's and he erases the board fast. Tests are easy, there is no HW. If you already know some of Calc 2 or did an AP Calc class in high school, this is not a bad professor to take. If you struggled with Calc 1, AVOID HIM.
He never uses technology. Everythings written on the whiteboard and given the limited space and his occasionally messy handwriting it can be hard to keep up in class. I found myself studying the stuff in class afterwards, lectures arent interactive at all. We take quizzes (not too difficult) Wednesdays and a worksheet Mondays to mark attendance
