Good prof. Knows what he is talking about. A little weird at times though. Take him if you have to take 101!
Hillarious, easy, and explains everything very well. Do the pre-test and old test and you have an A in the class

He was super easy when I had him. The only thing that really sucked was labs....But all labs sucks. Not sure if he is still teaching Chem 101.

Great prof.......knows his material and makes the class very interesting through his funny remarks!!
he's a very.....fruity...person but it was a great time!
Takin him right now...really great guy! funny...it can get tough...but very possible to get the grade you want!
He makes class interesting. Take his practice exams and you'll have an easy A.
pretty easy, pretty fun, pretty cool guy. very fruity but it makes class fun. and his sci-fi jokes are so corny they make you laugh, even when you dont know what hes talking about. Tests: do the practice exams. you will make A's.
Very interesting person.. his eccentricities are what make him entertaining . he knows what he's talking about without making the class boring. Its worth going to class , so don't skip !! Do the homework and practice with the old exams. if you're going to take chem 101, go for him!
You will simply like his class. There is nothing that you would not like about this professor.
Does not teach... talks about totally random things, nothing to do with the class, you will have to teach yourself
He's pretty good at explaining the concepts during class. I wouldn't miss a class because you might miss something important, but other than that he's a really good chem teacher.
If you didn't take his class for CHEM I, then its useless to take the class. I couldnt understand anything he was trying to teach.
very entertaining
He is a good prof, he works out all the problems and is very entertaining. His tests are mostly multiple choice and if you study your notes and review his podcast you will do well.
His Chem 101 class was ok. Most of the grade comes from tests, online quizzes and online homework. He uses clickers to check for understanding (attendance) and it is less than 1% of your grade (5 points out of 585 points total). I ended with a C. Chem 102 was very hard. Very Math Intensive. Same grading scale; lucky to get a D.
Great prof. Makes lectures interesting and funny, although most of the laughing is at him. Nice guy though.
If you're really bad at chemistry or math than do NOT take this prof. I am a senior supposed to be graduating and made all A's in my other senior level classes, but got an F in his class. He does NOT curve. The powerpoint slides are sort of useless; I read the book, and it was still hard to understand.
His tests were hard, the material was hard. Hated the class he was a nice guy though.
He did not teach. His powerpointa are pointless and dont make sense. His tests were hard. The owls were okay, and usually were fairly short. The quizzes will help you if you do them. Overall I don't recommend him if you are not super great at chemistry. I usually went to A plus and would choose A plus over class.
If you want to make an A in Dr. Mawk's class, you gotta start studying very hard from the very beginning. His tests are short, so if you miss one you get a lot of points off. I really don't like the way he lectures, very sloppy; However, he does know his stuff. I recommend him because he is challenging and if you work smartly an A is possible.
He is very helpful when you ask him questions and genuinly cares about wether you learn or not. go to the lectures if you want a decent grade and study a whole big bunch if you want an A. His tests are hard.
Dr. Mawk, either you understand his humor or you don't. I didn't. He was my first really hard class in life. I did make an A, but i did attend class every day. I had a study group,I studied my but off,Went to every SI session. Completed ALL of my owls,Sometimes read the book. (He uses the bold words on the test). He has messy notes a and goes fast.
A great Chem 101 professor. If you do your OWLs somewhat early, read the textbook, and attend his sessions, and you should get an A. His 3rd exam and final are difficult and even more difficult, respectively, so be prepared for that.
I personally did not appreciate Mawks humor. Not that it was offensive, just redundant. He moves quickly and expects you to catch on quickly, so come to class after reading what will be covered. He is a nice person, and is entertaining but his style of teaching is somewhat sloppy, which is fine for some people. If you like orderly, don't take him.
He is a very nice guy and very gay. Haha if you go to offfice hours he is very helpful. He is also very hard to understand if you don't pick up on things fast. His test are short and hard. I would not recommend taking him. I would only take him if chemistry is easy for you.
Dr. Mawk is a very cool guy, but he can be moody sometimes. His teaching style is very messy, which made it hard to really understand what was going on in lecture. He's one of those professors that's very smart, but not great at communicating his knowledge. However, his tests are very fair. I recommend going to A+ if you want to be sure you pass.
I took Mawk coming in with an A from CHEM 101. I am hoping for a B (expecting a C in this class). More than half the class has Q-dropped. Mawk is crazy hard (I haven't missed a class all semester and I have to go to 4.0 to actually learn the material). His lectures are literally just working through problems, so if that's how you learn take Mawk.
Dr. Mawk was my CHEM 101&102 prof. His lectures have a lot of pictures and work out problems so PRINT HIS NOTES from ecampus. His tests are short (14-18 m.c. questions) but he puts quizzes on ecampus and a practice test for studying & a majority of the questions are the same or slightly altered from those! He is a VERY fair curver as well!
I read the book, payed attention in class, and only took notes outside of class. He knows what he's doing, he's the CHEM department go-to-guy. Do the OWL's and fight for understanding. I cannot say how important that is, actually KNOW why you're supposed to do something (for the math). I only needed a 75 on the final to get an A, that says enough.
Rework practice problems to solidify the concepts. He is helpful and approachable. He made a large class feel small and would keep class entertaining. If you work hard and put in the effort, you will get a good grade. I found Dr. Keeney-Kennicuts online old exams great practice for Mawk's exams. Mawk is so far the best prof I have had at A&M.
Took Mawk for CHEM 102 in the summer so it was very fast paced. He is very good about giving you the materials you need to pass although the actual work content is difficult (very math oriented). He provided practice tests, pictures of all the work he did in class, and even podcasts. Overall a very nice guy and very laid back.
Dr. Mawk is a really funny guy, and knows what he's doing. If you talk to him after class or during office hours, he is extremely helpful. He makes a lot of nerdy references during his lectures and and tries to engage the class, but he makes sure you know the material. His test prep is fantastic! He makes helpful podcasts for the practice tests!
Professor Mawk is a really great guy and he's willing to walk you through problems. His tests are a bit hard and if you don't do your OWL assignments you're basically screwed.
I took Dr. Mawk over the summer and it was not the wisest choice. There are 3 exams and a final. The overall lecture was messy, his notes were not eligible, powerpoints were vague, and not the best at explaining concepts. Overall he is a pretty cool guy,but he did tend to go off topic often. Recommend to use Dr. Keeney-Kennicut's notes to study.
I took Dr. Elmo this summer and I don't regret it. His tests were fair and the homework counts for a good chunk of your grade. Also gives a pretty good curve at the end.
Dr. Mawk was not helpful on our group project. He barely responded to emails, and he was very disorganized. He did not have everything uploaded to eCampus that was necessary to finish the project on time. Also, he was very sassy in the emails that he actually responded to. I did not appreciate his disrespectful attitude and responses.
Dr. Mawk is the most disorganized and inconsistent professor I have had at A&M. He knows the material and labs very well, but trying to get information and help out of him is like pulling teeth. No labs were graded until 3 weeks before the end of the semester. I would recommend someone else for lab, but he is the only option. Good luck
If you dont know chem, dont do it. Hes so disorganized and there was not one assignment that didnt have a mistake on it. quizzes and test are on canvas and open note/book they can still be tricky and easy to bomb. So many people Q dropped this class. He teaches then throws in random chem facts he knows that no one understands. Hes one of those.
Elmo is the goat. His tests and fortnightly quizzes are really easy, online, and open note; they're very passable even with minimal studying. He does take attendance, but you only need to go to 80% of classes for full participation. His major flaw is that he is pretty disorganized and makes frequent mistakes on the tests/quizzes, but no biggie tbh.
This man is genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. I Im good at chemistry and this man had me thinking I needed to change my major. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He does not teach and expects you to know all the material. Every single quiz and test hes written has at least a couple errors. Open note quizzes but stuff on the quizzes isnt in the book.
He is very unorganized and gets off topic in class. The class is easy if you have an understanding of chemistry already. If not, good luck! The homework will boost your grade, but it doesn't always correlate with the lecture so it takes a long time to complete and teach yourself. He does listen to students though about deadlines/questions. He's OK.
If you dont know everything about chemistry already dont take him. Im warning you. Seriously. Everyone I know is failing their lab grades because he is 4 chapters behind and no one knows how to do any of the lab assignments. He is insensitive and rude anytime you ask a question. One time told me I was an idiot seriously in front of 300 peers.
This prof does not care if he wastes your time and his time. Every quiz/test ever written has had wrong/missing answer choices. His lectures give me whiplash between the poorly explained chem content and backstory about his sad life. On a positive note, everything is open book/ open note (if you can even get any notes out of his terrible lectures)
Dr. Mawk is an excellent lecturer. He moves slow and looks into the class (250+ people) to see if they understand. He cares enough to learns people's names. He answers all questions and explains things well. He's not the best at creating rubrics for tests/quizzes but he corrects it afterward. Gives study guides and lots of his previous tests online
To describe Dr. Mawk is to describe a fever dream. His lectures are cursed to say the least, you never know if it'll be a rant about Canada or spending 30 minutes on a single equation. He assigns a fair bit of ALEKS homework, but he compensates with his open note test and quizzes. All in all a very unique fellow, I learned oh so much.
Dr. Mawk is very disorganized, but he at least acknowledges it and doesn't penalize you for his mistakes. His lectures are a little all over the place, there will be days we go over a lot of material and then there are some where we go over one math problem. His tests and quizzes are reasonable and he is not trying to trick you. Overall he is good.
Mixed feelings about this professor. He is very disorganized and often rambles off in the middle class, which does make it interesting but at the same time prevents actually learning. Often his answers keys have errors so it takes a while to get your actual grade. But his test and his quizzes are ez. If you took AP chem this is should be free.
Elmo is an interesting prof. He goes off-topic and rambles a lot, does a lot of examples that (usually) are not beneficial. I didn't choose him as my prof, but if I had the chance I wouldn't choose him. Overall, disorganized (but admits it) and doesn't ACTUALLY teach. I learned absolutely nothing from him, more from the textbook and crashcourse.
If you can take someone else then please do so. I can safely state that i learned nothing from his lectures. The only reason i passed was because i went to A+ tutoring. His exams are open notes but I'd rather understand what is going on rather than be lost in my notes during the exam. My lab TA provided more help than him. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
He is unbelievably disorganized(he lost our extra credit and wont give us points for it). Lab never prepared. My lab reports were not graded until the second to last week. Gave information for final report (30%) the day before it was due. He wouldnt show us what we got wrong on the final. I believe he down curved some sections. Horrid experience.
Avoid Mawk at all costs if you actually want to learn chemistry. His lectures will teach you nothing but will make you laugh. All tests and quizzes are online, however, he always has at least one mistake on the key so your grade will always change. Tbh I don't wish the frustration of his class on anyone, you basically teach yourself.
Mawk is great but he's pretty disorganized. It's ok though because he's super understanding and he never holds you accountable for any errors he makes. There's a lot of HW but all the tests/quizzes are open note. DO THE ALEKS!! I never used the textbook but ALEKS taught me a LOT. It's a great class especially if you learn best by working problems.
Dr. Mawk gives open note tests, so if you're really confident in your chemistry skills then take him. I didn't find his lectures particularly helpful, but I read the textbook, did the ALEKS homework, and went to SI and I got an A in his class. He's an interesting guy so you'll always be amused in his class at the very least. Good luck!
EVERYTHING is open note BLESSS UP. The class itself isn't too bad but I couldn't really understand his teaching material so I just tried to learn on my own. Aleks homework is an actual pain. He's unorganized AF and he knows it but he's a great person and you can talk about anything with him. the LAB sucks. Pray that you get a good TA.
Professor Mawk is a solid professor, and you can succeed in his class. If you read the textbook, do the homework, and pay attention in class you will be fine. His exams are not extremely difficult and if you understand the material you will do well on his exams.
I am trying to control my anger for this man honestly. I genuinely apologize if you ever have to take this man. Sincerely. He gets off topic, is rude, very blunt, and extremely disorganized. He never knows whats happening, never has anything done on time, and takes forever to grade anything. He never actually teaches or tries to help you.
Anyone who says this man is a good teacher is literally a teachers pet. I had the same teacher they did and their reveiws are straight up kiss ups. I wouldnt be surprised if Elmo himself didnt write them. His lectures will either be 1 math problem or a weird story about canada, 9/11, or whatever weird thing same rando can get him to ramble about.
DONT TAKE THIS MAN IM SERIOUS. He is so disorganized and never responds to emails in a timely manner or even grades things in less than a week. I would have failed this class if not for the textbook. Sometimes he would give 200+ topics due in two weeks time. But after you eventually fail one of his exams i promise his facebook will provide laughs.
I often couldn't hear what he was saying in class, but I heard him makes some discriminatory jokes. I emailed him so many times, and he barely responded. There will be something not taught in his quiz, you need to read the textbook very carefully and remember important stuff yourself.
Dr. Mawk did not teach. He would simply just pull up a power point and lecture about a lot of things that truly did not matter and did not end up on our tests. I learned nothing from Dr. Mawk and it felt like there was no way to prepare yourself for his tests. Go to A+ tutoring ASAP if you have him, or get out of his class.
Literally the worst professor Ive ever had dude talks about his cat or something else that doesnt matter. You can 100 percent expect his exams and quizzes to come straight from the textbook and learn nothing in class however it is mandatory you answer a dumb question at the beginning for attendance purposes.
Mawk is an interesting fellow and the first time I went to advising with him (he is the chem majors advisor) he talked about how he regrets his life choices. I had him for lab and rarely anything in the lab worked correctly, and we didn't get any grades back until the 2 to last week of the semester. Be prepared to explain why you experiment failed.
He avoided the subject of chemistry like the plague. Tests weren't super hard but if you tanked one there was no saving your grade, there was no point in going to the lectures. Tests were online and open notes but I didn't learn a single thing about chemistry for chem 120 and organic chemistry. Take a different chem professor.
I taught myself everything. He uses cengage for homework which is the only way i learned things along with YouTube and SI. His PowerPoints teach you nothing, yet lectures are mandatory. He talks more about himself than chemistry and even though exams and quizzes are open note and online they make no sense and usually have errors. Rip for 120
Tough class. Did not explain anything. I had to teach myself and study the textbook. Exams were difficult and you would encounter questions he never even taught or learned in the textbook. Went off on tangents in class.
Dr. Mawk was a very nice professor. He bumped up my low C to a B. I think he did that only because he saw I put the effort in and I talked to him. I really tried to talk to him weekly and ask questions when necessary. He gets off topic very easily but his lectures are not bad at all. Just write down everything haha!
I did not go to his lectures because he would not stop going off-topic. Mostly everyone who went did homework in his class. I had to learn everything on my own from the textbook. He does not clearly outline what is going to be on the exam and there is an obscene amount of homework to do. Avoid.
You will be unprepared for the tests, this class does not prepare you at all. Dr. Mawk does not respect the student's time. Very unprepared, not a great educator, and should not be teaching at all to be honest. The lab portion was enjoyable however, but is taught by student assistants, not Mawk.
(Took the class Fall 2021) Professor Mawk is Not a good teacher. His lectures were disorganized and confusing. The tests and quizzes were constantly riddled with mistakes and didn't actually cover material needed to be successful in future chemistry classes. Taking this class means learning nothing during lectures and learning chem from google.
Elmo Mawk does is not serious about teaching chemistry. Class attendance is mandatory which is the only reason I've shown up. You are better off teaching yourself from the homework questions and practice questions.
He just bounces off the walls everywhere and all around is a horrendous teacher. He knows how to solve the problems but cannot teach it to save his life.
hands down the worst professor i have ever had. incorrect keys, impossible to follow lectures, poor planning, mumbles when speaking, gets distracted easily, runs out of time, does not prepare you. do not take him at any costs.
Professor Mawk wasn't awful. Chemistry is a very hard subject, just know that going in. Yes, he wasn't the best at delivering lectures, because most of the time he was off topic, going to fast, or I couldn't read his handwriting. But I would go home and read the textbook and be fine. Quizzes were open note & exams weren't awful. You have to study.
Dr. Mawk is genuinely a really nice person, just not the best professor. He likes to make jokes in class and isn't super serious in lectures. Has weekly quizzes that you can use your notes on, does online homework that gives 10 attempts, and does clicker points as incentive to go to class. There are 4 exams that are multiple choice & free response.
This is by far the worst prof I ever had!His lectures are mostly him mumbling and when you ask a question you feel like you are getting judged. I learned more about his cat then chemistry. If you are going to take this class make sure to give yourself time to do the homework because there is a lot of it and you are going to have to teach yourself.
This class is so easy for a chem 120 class. do the homework and study it for the free response portion, Do the practice exams for the multiple choice portion! Open note quizzes, 9 quizzes and records your 5 best. The exams literally have extra points, exam 3 was 114/100. Then I think there's a curve too?? If you grading awful then u need 2 lock in!
Elmo Mawk has to be the worst professor I have ever had in my time at A&M. I really don't know why people are giving him a 4 or 5 rating he was inattentive and didn't like when you'd ask questions. He would speed through lectures and basically expected us to know what he was teaching. A-plus tutoring carried me throughout this class.
I almost had to q-drop this class because of how horrible of a prof he is. A-plus tutoring carried me through this semester and I felt like I was teaching myself absolutely everything. Mawk didn't try to help students understand any of the material and seemed annoyed when students would ask questions.
Dr. Mawk is a nice person but not a good professor. He wastes so much time during lecture, handwriting is illegible, he messes up his own work all the time, not good at responding to email, just not a good prof. Tests are not terribly hard but A+ is the only reason ive done decently. Iclicker is the attendance, not a terrible amount of homework.
Even though his class is a bit tough, the homework and practice exams he provides are definitely useful for studying for his exams. Attendance is a big boost for points towards your grade, and he gives a curve towards the end of the semester.
If you want to get a good grade in chemistry, do not take Professor Mawk! His lectures are unorganized and you do not really learn anything from him. The only way I have survived this class if because of 4.0 tutoring and the textbook!
Dr. Mawk is an okay professor but I would NOT retake his class. The cons list include: hand writing is not eligible, does not respond to emails, lectures do not correlate to homework, monotoned voice when teaching. TONS of extra credit! TAKE THIS CLASS WITH MAWK IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT IN CHEMISTRY OR YOU WILL STRUGGLE AND EVENTUALLY Q-DROP!!!!!
Sometimes his lectures get boring/off-track at times, but he is very responsive to emails and outside questions about the material. Tests are curved, half your quizzes are dropped (and open-notes), and the HW has 10 attempts, along with a grade cutoff curve for the class. Nice guy, not the best lecturer but way better than the reviews make him seem
for me, the lect. were really unhelpful, i basically read through the textbook and taught myself there is hw but it's helpful and helps boost grades my lab experience was honestly good, had a good ta there's 4 exams, honestly had to study a good amount but he gave us a practice test before each one and had review sesh.
Lectures can be useful but it is very textbook heavy and the quizzes aren't very compatible with the textbook or the textbook homework.
Elmo is not the best professor but he get the job done. He also give reviews that are very helpful and curves the class very nicely. He is definitly better than the reviews make it out to seem.
Prof. Mawk is a very disorganized teacher. From the lectures to the quizzes and exams. He frequently goes on tangents over random things, that take the whole class. He messes up on his own questions in the notes frequently. You will NEED outside tutoring!!
Mawk is actually outrageous. I unluckily had him for 119 and 120... which I eventually had to Q-drop. I failed every.single.assignment/test/quiz. in this class. Now this may sound dramatic, but this is actually true. He makes zero sense and lectures about the most random things possible. He is a funny person but please avoid.
I find chemistry boring so I cant blame him for the boring lectures. The class is clearly laid out in syllabus with deadlines and grading. The 3 midterms were easier than the practice exams, but the final was so difficult. Brought my grade down 6 points. He adjusted the letter grade cutoffs to match the class distributions.
This class ruined my GPA. It's really hard to feel ungrateful even after all the extra credit he attempted to provide. His lectures are also way too elaborate and extremely rushed & he would also get off track often. His tests were hard!! I'm going to have to retake this class! He made the already difficult Chem 120, a hundred times more complex!!
Dr. Mawk is an awful lecturer, but to me this did not matter. If you put in an inkling of effort, this is easily passable. For all of the self-teachers, the A is basically handed to you. If you are stuck with him, you will be fine, just don't trust his lectures to help. Overall he was a cool person and although seems intimidating is really nice.
The only reason I got an A was because tests were open note. Knows material, just clearly isn't here for the benefit of the students. We didn't even get to the last chapter of material because we were so behind, also made me feel ridiculous when I asked questions. I just didn't enjoy going to his class, he's not a very likable guy.
He isn't the most amazing lecturer, but if you do the reading before class then you should get the general concept. Taught myself most of the material on my own time. Tough grader, but grades fair. He was also always willing to answer questions and would stay after class if anyone needed help. Sense of humor is a bit hard to read, but he is nice.
Could not teach to save his life. If you want to pass, you HAVE to go to A+ tutoring.Tests were honorlock at home and freeresponse in person. Weekly quiz online. Homework was very long and 5x harder than what was on the test. Lab was ez but the postlab was just retarded. Ur final grade, 74 was a B and an 84 was an A, thats how badly he had to round
Prof. Mawk is a great person but as a professor he is unbearable. He talks himself into circles and goes off topic every single chance he can get. I breezed by in chem119 with a different professor. I would recommend taking any other professor that actually can teach. His handwriting is also unreadable.
Professor Mawk is not the best lecturer, but he is a great person. He is also hilarious imo. He is not as bad as the reviews make him out to be. I will say that passing this class with an A will require outside help. SI sessions and extra practice on your own will help a lot. (Don't feel pressure to waste money on A+ tutoring)
He really means the best for his students, but unfortunately not very savvy at organized teaching. He has the lecture style of a dinosaur, but he cares about his students, and the curve is quite nice!
Get some noise-cancelling headphones, sit in the back of the lecture room and read the textbook. Much easier to understand and much quicker. Aleks and textbook practice problems should be enough to get you through exams with an A, as he does add extra points. Go to class for clicker. Lab is 50/50, if you got a good ta, you are chilling.
Terrible lecturer. Illegible notations, confusing lectures, and side-tangents galore. Look elsewhere unless you're comfortable with self-study. SI materials helpful though. With all of the money I give them each year, you'd think the chemistry department would have more competent faculty than this.
Mawk himself really wasn't that bad.The tests go hand in hand with the SI sessions and if you keep up with the homework you'll be fine. I q dropped bc the course load was just too heavy. Class homework was due the same day as ALL of the lab work and on top of quizzes each friday, I just couldn't keep up anymore and also do well in my other classes.
Dr. Mawk was very unclear during lectures and seemed unable to demonstrate problems correctly. Overall, the course was very disorganized and he never seemed to know what came next. The tests were nothing like the practice given or homework. The lab section was very easy and manageable.
It is very hard to understand and even read his notes while in class. I went to A+ tutoring and they helped me prepare for the chem tests. I went to class to get the clicker points and just worked on the homework he assigned while in class. However, he does curve at the end of the semester, for example, an 86 is considered an A this semester.
Professor Mawk is a nice guy. You can honestly tell he cares about his students, and his lectures are pretty engaging. His biggest problem is that he would trip over himself in his lectures, often doing the practice problems wrong, and overall being very confusing. The reason I did well is because I had taken AP Chem, so be careful if you haven't.
Mawk was probably my favorite class this semester! His handwriting is sometimes illegible, so listen closely. He uses questions off the past exams and practice exams on the real exams/final. To study, go over all the slides and past quizzes. Go through the practice exams and redo every question you did wrong until you understand. I believe in you!
Honestly he gives us enough time to do the quizzes, homework, and etc. The material is pretty easy to understand although if you don't know how to read cursive then it can be confusing to understand his handwriting but going to his office hours has greatly helped me and I would take his class again considering there is a huge curve at the end.
Mawk was a decent professor. He made some topics more confusing than they needed to be and he has pretty bad handwriting. But he is a nice guy and curves a lot on tests and curves the final grade for the semester. His tests are pretty similar to his practice exams so definitely study those. I went to A+ tutoring and that helped a lot.
Prof Mawk is an okay professor. His handwriting is messy and he forgets to upload the practice exam videos, but the practice exams already have explanations for them. He had a big curve at the end of the semester, and he gives some extra credit. Quizzes every Friday and homework almost every week. Practice exams are easier than the actual exams.
Dr. Mawk is hilarious! He definitely knows chemistry but sometimes his lectures can be unclear. I recommend going to his office hours or going to A plus tutoring (it really helps). Tests are mostly conceptual and are not open note. If you take this class it is very possible to get an A. Study a lot and you'll do great!
Overall I really liked Mawk, he was funny and cared about his students. His lectures could sometimes be all over the place, but overall if you do the ALEKS hw you'll be fine. Practice exams were given before the exam and usually had the same/similar questions on it. Make sure you do them because I didn't for the final and my grade went from A -> B
WAY overhated. Mawk is rlly not bad yall will be fine. Just do the practice exams he gives u and watch the video (if he does it still) and you can get an A on the tests I promise. He's also hilarious, I didnt pay almost any attention in class but he'd say the most out of pocket stuff when i did. ALSO he CURVES SO MUCH, even the OVERALL grade dist.
Professor Mawk is not as terrible as I had heard he was. His lectures were a little insufferable because he would just go over practice problems without really explaining it that well. I taught myself the entire course using aleks and A plus tutoring. If you are able to focus and listen during his lectures you can definitely get an A.
Mawk was a bad professor and very difficult to understand. On the first day of class, I watched people drop his course and walk out. Quizzes every week and a lot of homework on ALEKS every week.
Professor Mawk was a bad professor.Q dropped.I was a freshman in Chem 119 and his lectures were just straight up terrible. he refuses to not use illegible cursive and doesn't explain anything he works out. Multiple students have called out wrong things on his slide and the response he gave was "Oh well I've been using this for 20 years so oh well"
Horrible teacher. Repeatidly told us how much he hating teaching and didn't want to be teaching our class. He repeatly called students out infront of everyone for missing questions or not undertstanding. His attitude is confrontational and is not accessible outside of class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
After reading these reviews, I really wanted to try and like Professor Mawk. He made it nearly impossible, though. His lectures are unbearably boring; he snaps at students for not knowing what he deems "common chemistry knowledge," and overall, he is, I think, the most negative professor I've had at Texas A&M.
Mawk is pretty bad at giving a coherent lecture, and randomly starts teaching ochem or something that he is interested in. If you took AP Chem and were ok at it this class will be insanely easy. The tests are exactly like the practice sets that he gives out. The most I can say about him is that he's funny sometimes.
Professor Mawk is actually a good teacher maybe his lectures were not that great but if you just work on Alek and read the textbook you will be fine. Also for his exams he gives you practice test for each chapter you learned so that's another big help and the practice exam is similar to his exams. Good teacher overall, love his style of grading.
Everyone on here complaining has never taken any hard classes before. Mawk is nowhere near as bad as these people are saying. There is nothing wrong with weekly quizzes, the tests are very fair and he prepares you very well through the ALEKS homework (which is due like every other week so plenty of time to do that). He's great, y'all are just lazy.
Lectures were confusing and excruciating to sit through. I only have an A through the support of my amazing study group. His tests are really easy if you read the textbook and do the ALEKS. He doesn't give as much homework as the other professors (1-3 ALEKS due every 2-3 weeks and a quiz every Thursday).
Chem 119 is a lot of work. It's an easy class content-wise, but with the weekly labs and all the assignments for them on top of Mawk's work can add up. He has a sort of built in curve where your iclicker points are maxed where 70%=100%, only the top 6 quizzes (we take them weekly) get graded, and there's final exam replacement
While his lectures can be a bit boring, he is a pretty decent teacher. You should definitely try to learn a little more outside of class but he will teach most of the things you need to know.
Really great person to know, but not the best professor I have had. He does his job good, but nothing spectacular. There will be a lot of homework and quizzes to take, and lectures can be long on some days. Tells a lot of stories to pass time during lectures, which is the only thing that really grabbed my attention.
Elmo Mawk is such a great teacher he was very informative and his tests are straightforward because he gives you a study guide that is exactly like his test. It gives a lot of extra credit and he gives two attempts for each quiz which is really nice and his TAs are nice so definitely recommend this professor.
Dr. Mawk is an awful professor. He goes on tangents every lecture, and can't explain simple concepts well. I took AP Chem in high school, so the exams and work were very easy. If you were good at AP Chem, take him, because it will pretty much be a free A. If you are new to chemistry, do not take him.
Professor Mawk isn't as bad as the reviews put him out to be. Yes his lectures aren't as good and may be a bit confusing but if you can read the textbook and do the Aleks homework you will be fine. His Aleks homework is due every other week so you have plenty of time to get them completed. Exams are similar to practice ones so study them. Your ok.
Part of your grade is participation, so I would completely recommend going to lecture. In order to do well in this class, you HAVE to pay attention and study the learning objectives. Throughout the semester, I held a 95, however the hardest test he gave us was the final. Also, do Alek's! His homework isn't as long as other chem professors.
I did not take AP chemistry and I got an A. To survive this professors class you need to study and learn on your own because his lectures are useless. Make flashcards. There is extra credit given and he tends to curve. watch "organic chemistry tutor" on YouTube he saved me! if given the chance, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Work hard, and believe.
Mawk is a below average level professor. His lectures were pretty bad and unhelpful, but you could learn the information through reading the textbook and doing Aleks Homework.
Do not take him if you are not someone who works hard/is someone who tends to only try to pass a class. He gives a LOT of homework through aleks. He will give 4 chapters of hw due by exam date and each ch will be 20-60 questions. His exams are easy if you study hard. Lectures will not help you whatsoever due to his teaching style. You got this!
Lectures were difficult to understand, he got off topic frequently which made everything more confusing. Definitely not my preferred learning style. He doesn't emphasize what is important and unimportant. He does give lots of practice questions to work with when studying and he gives ALEKS every 2 weeks or so which can help boost your grade.
Here are basics facts you should know abt his system for chem 119. Weekly online quizzes, lots of aleks hw, exams are easy if you study and prepare well, and he gives practice exams for each exam which helps incredibly much and are similar to the actual exam. Everything else everyone has said abt him is pretty much true.
Elmo Mawk has the handwriting of a 7 year old and poorly explains everything. If you have to take this class with him, you HAVE to self-study. I've had some bottom-of-the-barrel professors but this is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my college career.
Do NOT take if you are not good at self-teaching! You get attendance points, but class always feels like a waste of time. The more he speaks, the more confused I would become. Everything you hear about him is true. I'm stuck with him again for 120, but now that I know his style and know that I have to study A LOT on my own, I think I'll be fine.
Homework was ridiculous! Get ready for an average of 40+ question aleks a week. His lectures were mandatory (graded i-clickers) and extremely hard to follow. His hand writing is ridiculous so prepare to be constantly confused mid-lecture. If you're willing to teach yourself then this class is manageable, plus he gives a decent curve.
Do not take this professor if you want to learn anything. Attendance for iclicker questions is important, so I would recommend covering the lecture information ahead of class, and throwing on headphones during lecture and study information for other classes. Please, do not take this lecturer if you enjoy learning.
I'm sorry, but it's horrible. His lectures don't make a lot of sense, even for concepts that turned out to be rather simple. Such terrible explanations. It's much better to just use YouTube, like Organic Chemistry Tutor, and Khan Academy. NO curves to any exams. His handwriting is hard to read. Honestly can't believe my tuition went into this.
Chem is a hard class in itself but having him makes it 10x harder. His explanations and handwriting make zero sense and he seems to be annoyed when students ask for clarification. He talks with no direction and his lectures are all over the place. Do yourself a favor and don't take him.
It's a love hate relationship with Professor Mawk. His lectures make almost zero sense, so this is a class where you do have to go home and teach it to yourself. Definitely do the Alek's homework because that's where you'll learn a majority of the material. Getting an A in his class is doable, you just have to put in the work by yourself.
DO NOT TAKE ELMO! I cannot stress this enough. Dont think you can teach yourself; YOU CANT LEARN ELMO. Mistakes on EVERYTHING, exams have very few questions but are heavily weighted. You'd be better off learning chem from any of the campus squirrels. Or a fish. I only went to lectures for Clicker. Unreasonable amount of Aleks questions due at once
Out of 4 exams and 10 quizzes EVERY SINGLE ONE had AT LEAST one mistake on it. As someone whos taken AP chem which is the SAME as 120, his is MESSED UP! DONT take him if you want lectures that make any more than 0 sense or want a test grade higher than a low B. He's also the LAZIEST professor ever and acts like hes gods gift when he finally grades
Don't expect to learn anything. Dont expect to use knowledge you already have. In fact, assume you're going to be taught by an illiterate polar bear with a New York accent. He's very full of himself, but also refuses to put more than minimal effort into any of his classes. Exams are near impossible to do well on because there's errors in most of it
whatever you do. do not take this mans class. he is the worst professor at A&M.
If you are thinking about taking Mawk's class simply because all of the other CHEM 120 professors are also subpar, think again. Hes rude to students, refuses to fix his horrible handwriting and is in general an extremely self righteous person. Dont take his class.
mawk is way overhated! an A is achievable he gives practice exams, and the questions are always pretty much the same. as long as you pace yourself through the homework, it won't be too bad also, there's a built in curve. you take 10 quizzes, but he only grades the 6 best ones. if you just pay attention, you'll be fine. he is such a silly guy
do not take him if you have any other option. his exams are not like the practice exams. there are 3 exams and a final, final replaces the lowest exam. he does give a good curve on the final grade which is great, but other profs are better.
honestly, chemistry itself isn't the issue. had a terrible teacher 119 and still made an A, but this guy's handwriting and lecture style are terrible, not to mention his exams are a wad of s***, rude at times, somewhat engaging, terrible handwriting, homework that you basically teach yourself.. just check the averages of his exams.
This was by far my worst and hardest class. If you did not have previous knowledge of Chemistry, you were screwed. I never really knew what was going to be on the exams and always felt wildly unprepared no matter how much I studied. Dr. Mawk felt out of reach and was not at all helpful when asked specific questions.
Mawk for chem 119 is honestly not bad. as someone who took AP classes in high school, his class was pretty light and I got an A just by studying like two days in advance for tests. He also bell curves at the end of the semester for 119, so if u have an 85+ u can get an A. I am taking him for chem 120, and his exams/material are slightly harder.
CHEM 120 is a lot harder than 119. That being said, Mawk wasn't nearly as difficult as you'd think from these reviews. Didn't get a lot from the lectures (pls fix ur handwriting Dr. Mawk). There's practice exams that are similar to the real exams, ALEKS, and weekly proctored quizzes. Grading is very, if not overly fair and generous.
Do not take Chem 120 with Mawk. His lectures are awful, he gets easily distracted, loves to hear himself talk, and is very self-absorbed. He told our class he purposely puts the hardest and most-missed questions on the final to make it as hard as possible. He then continues this cycle each year until the finals get so hard, they HAVE to be reset.
Don't do it. If you enjoy any part of chemistry, Mawk will take all of it away. His lectures are awful and his handwriting is unreadable. He thinks every concept is so easy and self explanatory, and teaches it as so. The final did not match anything on the practice exams. The homework is heavy, and the class is miserable.
Dr. Mawk's lectures were confusing and disorganized. He frequently made mistakes while working out practice problems and skimmed over important topics during class. If you have a hard time teaching yourself content, don't take this class.
Firstly, his handwriting is atrocious, making it challenging to follow along during lectures. Additionally, his demeanor towards students is condescending and sassy, especially when asked questions in class. Moreover, while he does provide multiple practice exams, they fail to accurately reflect the content and format of the actual exams.
Lectures are awful. Handwriting on the screen is very bad and hard to understand at times. Grade is test-heavy and tests are very similar to the practice problems he gives for each chapter. Only take him if you are okay with self-studying the topics and doing the test. If you need a professor who can actually teach take Joshua Edwards.
Mawk is not as bad as people make him out to be. 120 is expectedly harder than 119, but if you put in the effort, you will succeed in his class. He grades very fairly and is pretty lenient with his homework policy if you talk with him, The con is his handwriting which can make it hard during lecture so be ready to teach yourself. Nice person tho.
Dr. Mawk is very nice, but unfortunately he isn't very good at lecturing. I took this course in high school as an AP class and actually understood the information, but heavily struggled in this course. His lecture slides have almost nothing on them, his handwriting is near impossible to read, and he gets sidetracked often. Other than that, he is ok
Mawk is a bad professor. It's that simple. Yes, you can still escape with a B in his class but he is not a good lecturer. Monotoned, unenthusiastic, quiet, terrible handwriting, jumps from a fundamental understanding of a concept straight into a difficult problem. YOU WILL TEACH YOURSELF. Thank goodness for Aleks. Never again.
He lectures like everyone knows what he is talking about, consistently has to correct himself, and incorrectly grades almost everything. I learned everything I know by using the textbook and watching YouTube. Homework is long and quizzes are proctored online outside of class. Practice exams are kind of helpful, but class exam averages were 65-70.
A great professor who can be tough on grading exams as his class is 60 percent dependent on exams. However, you get lots of prep, a clause that allows you to switch your grade from your final onto a previous exam, and generally tries to helps students out. Also, his cursive is not really great so just try to listen to him.
An A is not hard with Elmo, but it has no reason to be this tedious for a 1st yr chem course. He will dump homework assignments on you with 40 - 60 questions consistently when other profs would average 20 or so. I took AP chem in HS and still had to go to SI (free extra help) for an A. His practice tests are VIP. HUGE exam duration so less stress
iClicker extra credit is worth going to class for. Exams weren't too difficult, and most times lecture was easy to follow if you understood the concepts. Exams were pretty straightforward and he didn't put too many tricks on them. Do the practice exams, take notes in class, you'll be fine.
Unironically curved our test down. I thought that was just a joke that nobody actually does.
If you liked Elmo from sesame street you won't like him anymore. His handwriting is impossible to read and there's nothing on the slides but pictures. He gives loads of homework that take days to complete, and he changes the due date without letting anyone know. If you don't know chemistry prior to this class do not take it!!
He's not a good teacher in general. He barely teaches with his boring lectures. You need to study ALOT outside of class time and try to learn the material yourself. He also goes off topic a lot. He has a lot of homework which can help you but the homework is required to do at a certain date and it is very time consuming. Don't take him if possible
I have choice words for this professor. Unfortunately, the first guideline for writing this review is "Your rating could be removed if you use profanity or derogatory terms". The final is in 2 weeks, and he has yet to publish a quiz/test without a mistake. His lectures are so confusing he disorients himself. Awful prof. 0/0. Don't take him. Please.
If you want to learn Chem and need to use it in the future find someone else to take it with. Mawk just dose not seem to know how to teach Martinez is way better. The only reason I got a B is because I watched organic chemistry and read the textbook. His handwriting is awful and his lectures are hard to follow.
Dr. Mawk is very knowledgable about the material he teaches. If you don't pay attention in class you won't do well, because he doesn't know what the homework is over and he makes the tests. If you pay attention and were good at chemistry in HS, his class is an easy A. He makes mistakes on grading sometimes, but it always helps your grade.
Please do not take this professor if you love yourself and your sanity. He is a terrible teacher and often shows convoluted ways of solving things because he has been doing chemistry for 10+ years. Just because he is good at chemistry does NOT mean he is a good teacher whatsoever. He makes this course much harder than it needs to be. DO NOT TAKE!!!
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. Had him for 111 and 112 and his lectures made no sense and his slides were extremely unhelpful. The online homework assignments were insanely hard and time consuming and they did not contribute to my learning at all. I had to pay for A+ Tutoring service because I couldn't teach myself the hard content. Take another prof!!
Assigns way more homework than needed because you quite honestly don't gain much from any of the lectures even though attendance is required and is part of your grade. Homework took up way too much time outside of class and was excessive. I would recommend looking for another chem professor if you can.
Worst 107 professor available. Lectures are very disorganized, good luck getting useful notes. quizzes have material that is outside the scope of the chapter sometimes. Tests are on the easier side, however, but other teachers have easier tests too. Also gives the most homework out of the teachers by far.
I would not recommend this professor if you have not taken college level chemistry before. He mostly just talks and can give great examples. This course is calculation heavy and it doesn't help that his handwriting is extremely hard to read. The homework's are very time consuming. You have to rely on the hw and yourself to actually learn.
One time I was injured and I asked Dr. Mawk if I could be excused from the Iclicker, I still continued to get absences and they weren't even my fault. His lectures are confusing (he has HORRIBLE handwriting and gets off topic),the slides are more disorganized than other professors. The homework is rather excessive. If u have him study the textbook.
If your reading this with his class in your schedule, Good luck.
Going to class felt like a hate crime. Terrible monotone lectures (where there was little to no information conveyed) and a stupidly large amount of homework. Every exam had an error. The only bright side of taking him is that his tests are easy.
Absurd amount of homework. Lectures were disorganized and Mawk would go on tangents about random topics. Handwriting is impossible to read. I basically taught myself the entire course. Every single exam had at least one error on it. He seems like a funny and chill guy, but that's not what's important when my chemistry grade relies on him.
Way to much homework. I mean other classes would have around 5 hw assignments per unit, we would have close to 20. Dr Mawk is a very smart man, but he does not know how to teach freshman or people that don't already have a PHD in chemistry. He is very nice and tries to make jokes, but his handwriting is horrible and you wont learn from lecture.
Awful lecturer, got confused by his own slides. Assigned a significant amount of homework that had little to do with anything on the tests or quizzes. Tests weren't too hard but required a significant amount of self study.
If you're taking Mawk to learn Chemistry, you've got the wrong guy. Skipping lecture is like skipping a book in the Bible- you will not just lose out on chemistry knowledge but also the lore of the most interesting and unique man I've ever met. He may butcher every test and quiz score, but we're all human. You WILL learn on your own. Take this man.
Chem is naturally a difficult course. This professor makes it far more difficult. Lectures are mandatory and useless. You will learn everything from the homework and the practice exams, which there is enough of to drown in. The only reason he isn't a 1 is because he's frequently available outside of class and gives plenty of good practice exams.
Dr. Mawk assigns a lot of homework with a frustrating submission format, and attendance is required. However, his multiple-choice only exam format and likability make him a good professor if you succeed in self-teaching. He covers just AP Chemistry content, so his class is great for anyone familiar with the material and hoping for a good grade.
This guy genuinely might be the funniest professor I've ever seen. I just go to class for the attendance points and play Pokemon or do homework for other classes. Every so often, I'll look up and listen and he'll be talking about Star Trek or WoW. Bro is actually hilarious. Chill class though.
He's a nice prof but lecture slides lacked any information and talked fast so it was really hard to catch and understand what he was saying. Lots of hw but helps you learn the material, don't wait to start. He did extend hw/quiz deadlines if he saw fit. The tests were easy to understand.
Lectures have no info on them and he talks fast so it's hard to understand what he's talking about. Learned a lot from the homework and textbook. Nice guy but also talks beyond the scope of the class sometimes.
Would only recommend him if you've already taken AP Chem, other wise it will be almost impossible to get an A because of how quickly he glosses over the fundamentals. His tests are easier than most, but averages are lower because of his teaching. His practice problems are very similar to the exam, and homeworks are much harder than the test.
Elmo Mawk gives great review material before exams, making it easy to score high. He does yap and go off topic during lectures however the review material he gives evens it out in my opinion. Take this professor if you can study on your own.
I went to every lecture and found them useless. Mawk's handwriting is impossible to read and he would often go on tangents unrelated to the class. I only learned from the massive amount of OWL homework assigned. He was rude and disrespectful when questions were asked. The only good thing is his tests were easier compared to the other teachers.
The homework, quizzes, and final is hard, but the midterms arent that bad. His lectures are boring and unhelpful, but hes a little funny sometimes. He brings the letter grade threshold down but he doesnt say how much. I know the A threshold was brought down at least to >=87.
He's hilarious but his teaching is unbearable (and required to attend for iclicker) , and his handwriting was even worse - unreadable often. A lot more homework compared to other 107 professors. Midterms and quizzes were not that bad but study his notes and review material. He will curve by bringing the letter grade threshold down. Teach yourself.
I was scared at first based off of his 2.5 rating but he's actually so funny and sassy! He really enjoys Chemistry and will defiantly make you feel dumb but his test are similar to the homework rather than the lectures as they are more broad on the topics. Elmo is super funny and I really enjoyed his class!
He is definitely underrated as a professor. He would sometimes go pretty off topic on lectures but he explained everything very clearly and had a lot of examples throughout the class. I struggled on the final and didn't do as well as I wanted, but he rounded my 85% to an A! Extremely thankful for that.
I honesty think Elmo was my best professor of my semester. I truly dont understand the bad reviews. His lectures are very simple & he doesn't overcomplicate. Everything is explained well. Attend lecture! He was very understanding of my 2 week emergency absence and was very cooperative in retaking my missed exam and quizzes!
literally the worst prof. He gave my exam a 90 for three weeks until he gave me a 2 sentence email saying basically "I got it wrong. It is unfortunately lower". He corrected it to a 60. He just can't teach even though he is a cool dude. My 75 got curved to a B. Also if you do have him ignore the lectures and read the book/do homework. Good luck Ag.
The lectures are unbearable. Funny guy, and his tests are easy compared to other class sections. But his handwriting is illegible, his slides are full of mistakes, and I go home and teach it all back to myself. I recommend the SI sessions for this class.
He is not that good a teacher himself but his tests were very easy in comparison to the other chemisty professors. He was very kind about homework, quiz, and exam extensions. He gave a lot of homework but that is simply how you prepare for the exam. He is a very understanding and caring professor.
Lectures as if you are already an expert on the material, does not do a good job at teaching concepts. Horrible handwriting, his slides are unreadable. The exams are ok if you study enough. Insane amount of homework but I guess that is to be expected. The homework was the only way I learned anything in this class.
Funny guy, though has bad handwriting and his lectures are not engaging, and I found myself learning much of the material on my own. He makes mistakes during lectures, and very often makes mistakes on tests, whether in the questions themselves or grading them. Overall I would recommend not taking this professor.
His exams are fairly easy comparing to other profs. There is no free response just multiple choice. And tbh that is really the only good thing about taking his class. His lectures are straight up snooze fest. He has this monotone voice that makes his lectures very dull and boring. Also bro has the handwriting of a two year old, so have fun.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN, he is awful, quizzes on lockdown browser and webcam, and he is an awful teacher, makes so many mistakes, spends most of lecture correcting himself, save urself and ur time from this man, he even makes u calculate ur own grade, but you will get a grade curve at the end of the year, so if ur stuck good luck!
Getting through class even while choosing not to pay attention was hard. That's how bad the lectures are to sit through.
quiz almost every week. horrible handwriting (half the questions are asking what he wrote). assigns SO. MUCH. HOMEWORK. (Expect 70 ish questions. once was like 100?) on Aleks. quizzes and tests are acceptable, he doesnt try to make them too hard. Be ready to self-study and fall asleep in his class.
I just showed up for iClicker; his lectures are boring and unorganized. If you read through the textbook, take notes on textbook and do ALEKS I think you'll be fine. The quizzes and exams are too easy, the third exam took longer but still easy. Ive heard other profs have harder exams/quizzes but not sure. A little too easy
Elmo Mawk single handedly reversed my understanding of chemistry. He can't solve his OWN problems and always messes up questions on his exams. I swear he's just trying to prove to himself that he understands the concepts. This lecture should be renamed "Decoding the Chemistry Tongue of Professor Mawk". My advice: go to Zhu's lectures instead.
handwriting is sooo bad, I can still learn from him tho, I got used to the handwriting tbh. Uh, quizzzes are really hard, tests are super easy. He funny tho, kinda an icon.
This professors handwriting is ATROCIOUS. Can't understand anything, sometimes even when he is talking. Be prepared to learn EVERYTHING on your own or with the SI. Use the textbook the only saving grace.
Contrary to what others might say, I found Dr. Mawk's 120 to be relatively easy. His quizzes are the most difficult part of the course but he does drop at least one quiz grade. He provides a lot of resources to prepare for his exams, making it easy to score well. And he usually curves course grades pretty heavily... like half a letter grade.
His class was unnecessarily difficult for someone who did not take AP Chem. His lectures & material are not objectively hard but his teaching is lackluster at best. Quizzes & homework often did not help, and his office hours never did either. I'd recommend not taking him but if you do, find ways to learn the material elsewhere, not in his lectures.
He's so funny and I love his class. He can be a little hard to follow, but honestly I'm okay with that because I just enjoy being in his class. He's really nice too and you can tell he likes teaching. I hope my next professors are as good as him...
Lectures are mediocre. He is not very good at explaining concepts but he is funny and engaging. His iClicker points are easy to get. Quizzes are very hard but exams are ok. He responds to emails very quickly and is very helpful during office hours. He does assign many ALEKS questions but they are honestly helpful for learning content.
Dont get me wrong, Mawk is a great guy, love his little sassiness and chillness, BUT when it comes to teaching, he's not the brightest. He can teach, but he normally makes mistakes often when it comes to calculations and like there's a lot of typos and errors on quizzes and exams that screw up grades for like 400+ people and its a mess. he's ok tho
You will not learn anything in lecture. Lots of homework and self-teaching outside of class. Handwriting makes it hard to learn or understand anything.
I didn't think I would struggle in 120 because I did pretty well in 119, but that was not the case. Although he gives practice exams and materials for his exams they are actually pretty hard. This semester each exam had 20 questions so if you missed 3 you were already at a B. If you are not good at teaching yourself chemistry, then do not take him.
Mawk is a great guy, just not the best professor. He often makes mistakes in lecture, and his handwriting isn't the best, HOWEVER, he drops your lowest quiz grade and rounds up your overall grade after finals (counted an 85 as an A). Attend SI sessions and do all the homework. Tests are easier than the quizzes!
Professor Mawk reversed my understanding of chemistry so much so that I decided to ignore his lectures and just read the entire textbook on my own, which worked well. DROP THIS CLASS if you can, if not, read the textbook. Thankfully, Elmo is a sweet guy and lowers grade thresholds at the end of sem which has been a saving grace for many students.
Okay, so to begin, Elmo is a great person, super funny, sassy and whatnot, but to describe his teaching, I would say it was all of the place. Had to learn through pearson, ALEKS, and the book. Don't forget your homework's, they aren't going to show on canvas. He curved my 84 to an A, so he's definitely the GOAT for that. Also beware of lab.
Dr. Mawk is funny and a nice guy and lowers the grading curve to make an 85 an A. However, he makes errors while teaching, makes attendance mandatory, assigns excessive ALEKS, and teaches as though everyone understands chemistry. He is interesting to listen to and will allow accommodations but I would take another prof if you can.
I did not find his lectures that helpful and would only come for the Iclickers. He gives a lot of ALEKS homework and gives practice exams, which were helpful for exams along with reading the textbook. We did have some quizzes online, but if you study for the exams and quizzes, you'll be fine. He did curve our final grade, which was nice.
Dr. Mawk's lectures are monotone and his quizzes/tests are disorganized. I learned more from reading the textbook(online) then from keeping up with his lectures. The only good thing is his tests are really easy compared to other professors because its mostly basic concepts.
Dr. Mawk is a very sweet guy! I studied a lot for this class and ended up with a B! To succeed in his class do all of his practice exam, my grade was saved because I got A+ tutoring. If you don't understand the class material, I highly recommend buying A+. To prepare for the final, do all the practice exams, and look over your class exams!
Everyone is way too harsh on Dr. Mawk. Yes his tests and lectures are messy and disorganized, but his test were always identical to practice problems or examples done in class. He is VERY fair when grading.
Nothing against Prof Mawk, hes a nice guy and cares about his students, but the homeworks are extremely length and tedious. The tests are difficult but are multiple choice, and the lab portion is significantly dependent on if you get a good TA. He did round my 88 to an A, and he did this for most students, so that is a benefit.
Professor Mawkn is one of the most difficult professors to have. His handwriting is horrific and lectures are practice problem heavy. However, most of this will not be on the Exam and are just tangents. Homework also has little to do with Exams. Your best bet is to take the best notes you can during lectures. Good Luck!
Worst professor i had. his test is pretty easy tho if you do the practice exam. i stop pay attention after the 2nd day of class, would recommend to get A+ tutor and you will be golden. very disorganized. Lecture look like it was type up the day of.
I dropped Professor Mawk's class halfway through the semester. His lectures were, by far, the most convoluted lessons I have ever attended. Anything I learned in Chem 119 was through my own doing. I got a tutor and they called him "the worst chem professor at A&M". He was cruel to students in the name of jokes. Just a mess. Easiest quizzes though.
Dr. Mawk is a funny guy who likes to crack jokes during lecture. I definitely learned more through the homework and YouTube on my own than from lecture. Take the time to study the subjects that he mentions in lecture outside of lecture, and you'll be fine. Overall, if you have a decent amount of chem experience already from HS then you'll be fine.
The lectures were super chill with only iClicker for attendance, he was a very funny and easy professor; Albeit If you haven't taken chemistry before (AP or otherwise) the class would be much harder with this specific teacher but if you have even a little bit of knowledge you can easily get an A without studying.
Handwriting is so bad, makes mistakes during lectures, and when ppl correct him, he'll just cross it out instead of explaining it. A ton of homework and a quiz almost every Friday, but he announces things so quiet like he wants you to miss it. If you haven't taken AP Chem before this class, dont take mawk. Save your GPA please.
Just don't.
Don't take this class if you want to graduate. Nice guy tho.
I ran the red on Texas university everyday so I wouldn't have to attend class,
Dr. Mawk as a person is very helpful. However, do not expect to get much out of the lectures. The lectures often go on tangents and when he tries to write it on the board you can get lost easily. To do good it is crucial to work through the ALEKS yourself and understand the problems. His practice exams are very useful and similar to the exam.
You can get an A, but it will be mad annoying. He makes lots of mistakes with tests, grading, and basically anything he is paid to do, and his solutions normally involve cooking everyone and no compensation. Not worth pushing back a semester if you have to take him, but take someone else if possible.
Don't take his class if you haven't taken AP. He is a decently guy, but he was not a great professor. I would have skipped class, but he does iclicker for attendance. He expected us to know things we had not learned, and his exams did not reflect what he was “teaching”. His exams are relatively easy, and rounds your final grade (considers 85 an A).
I stopped going to class and just taught myself all that i could to be able to take the exams, he rambles a lot, very random, and he just straight up isn't a very good lecturer. just take someone else
Take Mawk if you have taken previous chem classes in high school or if you're fine with teaching yourself. He used iClicker for attendance points. I ended up zoning out during most of his lectures and teaching myself later on. The tests aren't too hard I just did the practice exams he provides. He gives a lot of homework but it's usually quick.
Lowkey had to teach myself everything. Lectures are slide heavy hard to follow and boring. Just going to class for attendance. Soo much Aleks. As long as you teach yourself the material a couple days before the test, do the reviews ( very similar to the test ), and turn in your stuff on time your good to get an A which is considered 85 and above.
this class sucked. his version of "teaching" is talking to himself about the topic and laughing at his own commentary. attendance was mandatory due to iclickers, but let's be real, it's so unnecessary BC HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO TEACH. it was a waste of time. if you have him, be sure to get real comfortable with organic chemistry tutor...seriously.
Dr. Mawk isn't, the worst professor, I had to get a tutor early on and barely passed with a B, he did curve the final which was nothing like the practice exams he gave us. There is a quiz every friday that are doable. I think if you do well in lab an A is maintable.
Weekly quizzes with lockdown browser, 4 exams with a mini exam, weekly aleks which he does give 2 weeks to complete but range from 4-48 questions depending on the chapters. I did have to go to tutoring sessions to maintain a B. He does curve and takes the 5 best quizzes, as well as replace your lowest exam score with your final if its better.
I promise Dr. Mawk is not THAT bad. Yes he is hard to follow and his notes are messy. Learn from the textbook and do the homework. The tests are just like the review. Read the explanations on the reviews, they are better than the explanations in class and can give an idea of the info he wants you to know for tests.
