This man is great. Not for the slackers or those uninterested in history. He's radical, challenging, and I am grateful that I have the opportunity to be his student. Don't take him if you're a close minded individual, he's amazing.
Be warned.... he has great intentions (i think), but he comes on really strong, you better have an opinion in this class, be willing to speak up in class...its a real in your face approach to teaching....if thats your thing, than great...hes for you, if not (STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS).
class is hard but a great challenge. im glad i took his class cuz it made me realize how lil i knew about hist. i recommend him if ur willing to be challenged... discussions and presentations were great... i can honestly say i miss having that class...
I'm not going to lie: this class is difficult and Zarate is VERY intimidating and in-your-face. BUT, he is one of the best history teachers I have EVER had. He teaches to you THINK. I admit I wanted to drop the class initially, but I am so grateful that I didn't. I'll never reget taking his class.

Like in the movie "Folks just can't handle the truth"
He is in your face. U BETTER not have an opinion opposite of his because U will become his enemy and pick on U most. He even praises HIS wisdom & education & compare it 2 how low yours is! If you want to be spoon fed your history...take his class! He is not open 2 open minded dialog.Take some1 else!

Get to know the man and you'll better understand that all of these attacks against him are nonsense. I highly doubt that those of you who dislike him have ever fully completed his class, probably just dropped it as soon as you felt threatened.
I've chosen 2 take him 2x. He is HARD, INTIMIDATING, SCARY, but lectures r interesting and he is 1 of the best @ PCC. Ur paper writing skills will be challenged and he gets u ready 4 university work. Comes on strong, b/c he wants 2 make sure you care enough 2 make the effort so his time isnt wasted.
he is a great teacher...is hard no doubt but if u study and read what he tells you to..u will do just fine..i can say that my writing skills have improved becuase of him HE IS HELPFUL u just need to ask for help. I LOVE HIM
Ladies he is the finest teacher in the world. I literally had the hots for him. Okay, enough of that. He is a great teacher. He will teach you a lot but at the same time his class is very challenging. Highly recommended!

AWESOME!! the best teacher ive ever had. he really makes you think. just awesome!

I thought this prof was great... but only on the first night of class. It was all downhill from there. He expects you to get any useful knowledge straight from the textbooks, and his lectures are of little practical use on exams. He is the least helpful prof I've ever had and he bolts right after class.Grading is ridiculous. "A" students get C-.
Very interesting perspective...but he is tough.
It is obvious that the last three June 6 and 7 comments were a "collective mind"....precisely how Zarate is trying to teach us NOT to think! Get it??? There is no doubt in the clarity of what he expects from you and he is a very generous teacher if you seek his help. Step up to the intellectual and academic challenge and you will learn something.
Zarate is only compassionate when he totally screws up. The most unfair teacher that I have ever had. Your final exam question is based on which paper he draws from a drawer. So your classmate could be answering the topic you are an expert on and you get stuck with the sucky question. How is that fair? Needs some serious ego-deflation.
I understand the outrage expressed in the reviews below. He insulted me when I tried adding his class, and he forces his personal viewpoint on other students, insults anyone who doesn't agree with him, and to top it off, he called Condoleezza Rice a ****, derogatory term. I can't believe anyone would endorse what he's doing. Think for yourselves!
zarate is a hard teacher, he can be harsh, strict sometimes but i found that i learned ALOT!!!! from taking his class. some ppl think he sucks cause hes just way to hard and they dont like how he teaches, but once u get to know him hes a really down to earth teacher. hes cool! in fact im taking him again!
Zarate challenges you to challenge your own ideologies. He is an incredibly dedicated and charismatic professor who lectures with enthusiasm and sets aside time for class discussion. Don't take his class if you are unwilling to consider others viewpoints. Do take his class if you want to learn, from him and the other students.
My radical HERO! Very tough, will push you VERY HARD -- but he is fair, even if he manages to infuriate some of his less open-minded sutdents. Take him for a very diffedrnt version of history than you got in high school!
Professor Zarate can be a little intimidating at first especially if he disagrees with you but get to know him and you will find a great person. His teaching style is different because he speaks his mind and the truth. Although he is not a christian, he taught me more about my faith then any pastor and showed me that christians can be open minded
Worst Prof ever! If u don't believe what HE teaches u will not b graded fairly. So, become a white man, blame for him fo everything kind of student and u are off to receive that A! Please, I beg that if u decide to attend his course, you protect yourslf cause he does not like disagreement against his interpretations of World Hist. This guy is nuts!
Professor Zarate is a truth seeker and teaches you the cold, hard facts. He further reminded me how cool college can be. I can understand the criticism he receives but Mr. Zarate does have historical facts backing all his arguements. If you want a dose of our real world history from a different perspective, do not miss out on his class.
Do you want to know the difference between college and high school? Take this class! Lots of work, and he forces you to think not just regurgitate stuff. Controversial, but fair, and contrary to what some say, definitely NOT a ****!
This class is a hard class. But,it made want to strive for the best grade that I could get.He is straight forward and sometime rude. But,it is not directed to you.He is one of the best teachers that I have ever had.He has taught me the more about history than anyother teacher.I will be taking another class of his.

He's a great teacher, he makes you challenge all that you've learned. Everything you know might contradict you. He's really interesting, he's rather funny, but if you can't handle someone who tells it how it is then...don't think of taking this class.

Used to love this guy, but after awhile I realized that Eloy is a prick. He's so full of****. Claims to be a very open-minded professor and yet he only teaches one viewpoint, which just so happens to be like every other professor: extremely liberal. It just frustrates that he doesn't teach both viewpoints and he really makes you feel stupid if you disagree with his philosophies. College is for teaching, not forcing your ideas on impressionable youths.
Worst Prof.He makes fun of some students for the enjoyemnt of the rest of the class. He is like a the Hitler of History only his opinion counts. If you kiss up & tell him he changed your life or that he is hot then he'll like you. He's irritating & obnoxious short & offfensive. He shoves his opinion down your throat like it or not.Sad he's a teacher.
he makes u feel so f** stupid.. ihate going to his class it sucks and hes sooo RUDE! it makes me really mad bc he seemed to be soo cool at the beginning but he just seems like a total JERK i dislike him a lot!
yeah i agree with some of you guys. i hated his class. i had him during his first year of teaching...he only notices you if you speak in his class. im sad to say he went to my alma mater...UCR.
Awesome class
He's REALLY hot but kind of a jerk and totally full of himself. Claims to be openminded but insults any opinion other than his own. Told my class that the USA deserved 9/11. I strongly suggest not taking his classes, but if you do, be prepared to forget about your own opinions or your A. If you want a great hist. teacher, try Huepler. He's awesome.
Avoid Eloy. He talks about being fair minded and dedicated... but he is not. Rude and condesending, Eloy tries to brainwash you and penalizes your grade if he is unsuccessful. Don't be fooled by his friendly demeanor, he really is just a teacher who socks it to his students out of twisted retribution for the "injustices" he faced as a student.
He demands a lot of homework and the class is pretty hard. If you have to take this class as a requirement, dont take this professor or else be prepared. You are gonna have tu put effort and time to have a good grade.
I strontly advise you not to take this class with him, unless you enjoy being yelled at and intimidated...he's on an ego trip!

He is so against arrogance that he can't even see it in himself.
This guy knows his**** and and is not afraid to tell it like it is. He comes off kind of abrasive, but does so because he is really passionate about history. If you want to learn, take his class. He has great lectures and has high writing expectations. Two shortcomings; kind of a prick and takes intellectual dissent very personaly.
Okay, he DOES know his s*it. He is very "in your face", and isnt tactful at all. But if you try hard, and you work hard, and don't let himn get to you, you can do very well!
Anyone who wants to take US history NEEDS to take it with Zarate. It's an early class, but it's well worth it. Definatly one of the best teachers I've ever had. If I could take history every semester with him, I would. Don't be intimidated by his "hard exterior" he's really a nice guy.
He tries to be against the status quo but he really sucks and his class blows, if you want a real professor take Schwyzer or Heupler.
He doesnt hand you your grade you dont earn it. He comes off as an **** but is a great teacher. i'm going to be taking him for about two more classes. if you are lazy and dont wanna put effort into the class this isnt a very good choice. is a great professor and is very wise. If you want to learn take his class you wont regret it.

People are intimidated by Eloy, but he's really got a good heart undernedth a veneer of machismo. His class is work, but if you pay attention to your writing (he cares a lot about your arguments), you'll do well and be challenged.
don't fall asleep in his class..... he will kill you.
this guy was the worst history teacher ive had ever. he was never clear on things and would never remind us that something was due and would give us stupid assignments. overall a very boring class.
This isnt an easy A, but its not hard if you study. he will get you thinking about stuff and maybe change your perspective on life. great teacher. challanging too.
A bit of an egomaniac just like the guy he shares his office with-Hugo but unlike Hugo he actually respects his students enough to challenge them to think critically about what he teaches-you have to respect him for that His very passionate about history and that makes up for the poor training he received-he did his grad studies in Riverside(lame)
He is definately passionate about world history. You do need a thick skin, open mind, and be willing to work hard to fully appreciate Eloy as a professor. His lectures are amazing. This is my second time taking one of his classes. I will be sad when there are no more classes to take.
He was awesome. Really challenged me. During the class I found a particular topic of interest. He read through specific books on this topic with me and helped me to clarify things and we really worked well together.

He is the greatest history teacher in the wolrd besides being a great dad and a very hot guy. Really gets you thinking. I was sad to leave his class but was happy to have had such a great teacher. A must take class!

The man is pretty hard and intimidating at the beginning. once you get to know him, he's pretty cool and will thoroughly explain the material until you understand whats going on. He will make you a much better thinker. He's probably the best professor i had at PCC. That's because he's very passionate about his job.
Great teacher. Loves his job and it shows. He really wants you to learn the material. He is the best teacher i have had in P.C.C. Very helpful and speaks clear on the subjects. Take him and you will not be sorry.
One of the best teachers I have had at PCC. Very enthusiastic about teaching.
Zarate gives you a new perspective about history. He tells it how it is and he doesn't ****. He may come across as intimidating, psychotic, or difficult, but he really cares about his job and cares about the students who put an effort. Take the class its a great experience.

Hard class...dont take him he is sn a***
Yes he is very hard but he will bend over backwards to help you. Go and see him and he will take a long time to explain how to do better. He will push you very hard, which is what college should be about. Very important professor.

Yes, he is hard. One big chip on his shoulder as well! BUT, if you are one who is interested in history and you work for your grade, he is an amazing and great professor! Don't take him if you are expecting an easy A!
Yes he's hard but he pushes you to do your best, brings the subjects to life from different perspectives. Has the ability to spark your interest about history and make you a better student if you aren't to sensitive and self absorbed.
Fantastic teaching ability but a lot of work. If you take this class you had better be prepared. He is a serious teacher. The only bad thing about him is that he is intolerant of anyone who doesn't share his VERY RIGID views--especially if you are at all religious.
He will make you look at history, n life in general from a different perspective. He is such a hard grader tho.*cares enough to rent you out the books, and then you can return them at the end of the semester*must write essays&take quizzes on several books, ALL essays r graded w/ high expectations.
He is the best teacher I ever had. He has a uniquie style of teaching and attracts your attention. You will be required to read a lot, however the readings are very interesting. If you do all the work you are guaranteed to pass the class. He just seems very tough, however he has a kind heart. He is just very natural and sincere person. ..
Great prof! He will provide an entire new way for you to look at World History. He will demand that you read and write papers that are original and represent your insights. If you are thin skinned or unwilling to listen to views that are different than yours this is not the class for you. But, if you want to work and learn it is worth the effort.
my first impression: what an ****. It's his facade in order to keep the ones who realy want to learn. He opened a new way of thinking for me that i was able to apply in other genres and i will never regret toughing out his teaching tactics .. ever. He is worth your effort, time, and energy.

"Oh, you just can't connect with Eloy's thinking!" Be quiet. Please. You can stop with the butt-kissing, he isn't going to read this. One on one, Zarate can be a pretty nice guy, but during the class it's all ego and nothing seems to relate to well. I felt the homework was disorganized. TELL THE STUDENTS WHEN SOMETHING IS DUE, DONT JUST THROW IT ON
He's really confusing. If you expect an A, B, or even C... don't take his class. He's a cool guy in general but he's hard to deal with as a teacher. He never really answers your questions with an answer. Although he seems very very very passionate about what he teaches, he's hard to understand. His systems and what he wants are very unclear
Zarate is not everyone's cup of tea. He doesn't just lecture,he challenges and inspires and pushes his students not merely to memorize but to think.People don't like him because he doesn't pander to them, but he is what college teachers should be.
He's a funny teacher, but requires effort and reading from your part. You must participate, it's imparative if u want an A or B. If you are shy to speak up, dont bother taking Zarate. mind what u say in class, he would embarrass you.
he is really an amazing teacher enough said!!
Do not recommend. Talks about himself a lot. Has a book loan program where you have to pay 60 dollars to read the books but you don't get to keep them or sell them. Waste of money. His lectures are boring and his tests are hard. Worst History Prof I have had at PCC and I'm a history major. Instead of teaching, he just tells you his opinion.
One of the best professors Ive ever had. He inspires his students to do the work. He motivates students who dropped out of college to come back to college. Great motivator and scholar. Always willing to help any student who cares. I reccomend him, his class will help your mindset on lifes obstacles.
By far the most interesting class I ever had. He is not afraid to tell you what other teachers are afraid to tell you. He critisizes both conservatism and liberalism. This professor is fearless, and much admired by me. Class isn't easy, but life isn't either.
He has two personalities; his classroom one, which is very straight forward and stern, and his office personality, in which he does everything to help you pass his class. You learn alot from this Professor, I would suggest you take him, if youre eager and hard-working towards History. However, if you just want a good grade, stay clear.
The best teacher i have ever had in my life. seriously. He crossed the lines and i loved it. first day of class 7 people got up and left. towards the end of the semester there was 10 or so of us left. everyone passed. He is clear, he will tell you what he expects and he really makes you think. dont freak out, stick with it. Youll be fine.
You will either love him or hate him! He's very passionate about history, and opens your eyes up to a lot of things in the world, very smart man. He has a book loan program and it's awesome because you don't have to buy all the books. That shows how caring he is about students. Not an easy teacher, A almost impossible.
worst teacher i've had. i took his class last year and had to withdraw due to my grade, and re-took it in the winter session and got a A. test are un-passable, and really messy. you never know what your getting marked down for. i do NOT suggest.
i was terrified the first day of class; however, he is not that bad. he is a great historian. he teaches u how to be one, and helps you better understand cultures, religion, and history. not an easy professor, but he is very clear on his assigments.
Take this professor only if you can put up with profanity. He cusses like crazy during his lectures. Although his course work seems like a lot, I ended up dropping because I didn't like listening to profanity every day.
A little heads up your in college not in high school so if your just trying to pass this class by not going or listening to him then your in for a wrong. You must study as you should for all your classes he is available any time during his office hours. has no problem with talking to you through whatever he wants you to understand. great professor

amazing teacher, you actually learn something, changed my life
I'M NOT GOING TO JUDGE THIS TEACHER OR HIS CLASS....I'M MY EXPERIENCE I'M GLAD I WAS ONE OF HIS STUDENTS!...
Zarate was my reason for going to school. I hated him during the first class, and he soon became my favorite teacher. Give him a chance, youll be giving yourself a true gift of having him as a teacher.

Best professor I ever had in my PCC career. Really teaches, which is all too rare, and he's impassioned and compassionate. Don't get scared off by the first few days!
Willing to help you through
Great teacher! He's REALLY intimidating at first and can seem like an axx, but stick in there, you'll learn a lot, and he'll see that. It's very possible to get an A, you just have to work for it. Illiterate and lazy people will not survive. I never knew how much I would enjoy history until his class. TAKE HIM!
One of the most brilliant professors ive ever had. Yeah, he might SEEM tough, mean, whatever, but hes always fair. (this is college anyways, not preschool) He has a way of motivating his students.. not an easy A, but at least ull get to spend a semester with a passionate teacher who ull really learn something from!
I though the class was very interesting, he may be abrasive at first but if you do the reading and the work, theres 1 essay and 3 discussion papers and the midterm n final yo can easily snatch a b. Plus he gives good lectures even if he can be loud and high n mighty at some points.
He is super mad all the time and refuses to help students. He's really intimidating so good luck trying to get something clarified that you don't necessarily understand. Also, it would be easier to dismantal a time bomb than to really understand what the heck is up with the class sylabus (and he WILL NOT explain it!). ONLY D IVE EVER GOTTEN
Worst teacher I've ever hand in college. Zarate is borderline belligerent. It seemed liked he improvised every class lecture. He digressed alot. If you write down his lectures and reiterate them in written tests, you'll at least pass. He plays favorites. The worst part is that he states his personal bias as truth. A teacher should never do that.
I feel like i'm entering a cult everytime I go to class. Second time students seem to have an air of arrogance in the class. They also seem to share his dogmas of history and the world. Most of his lectures consists of him yelling and using wild hand gestures. Overall the class is easy. However you must endure the profesor's personality.
This man is insane. He talked about his persecuted relatives in freaking Argentina rather than go through the syllabus. His monologues are extremely irritating. It seems he had a revelation, and not in the good way like in "Jerry Maguire." Apparently some students took advantage of him the previous semester and he's been bitter ever since.
HONESTLY, If you are not an A student, don't take his class, you'll be wasting both your time and his. I think the man is doing something great for the world, he's actually teaching awareness. Something none or close to none of my classes offer. If you want to develop your critical thinking and awareness skills, this is perfect for you.
He is the best teacher. I have learned that no matter what he say's it is up to you to make you own opinions. He tells you what the options are and lets YOU make up your own mind. Full of insight and knowledge. If you can't handle constructive criticism than don't take him... move to another teacher.
If you want to learn something then take Professor Zarate's class. I think he is the best instructor at PCC.I loved his class, and I found myself looking forward to the next one. He cares about each and everyone of his students. Not only in class but outside of class as well. Before you buy your text books find out about his book loan program.
Perhaps the most inspiring professor at Pasadena City College. Actually cares about his students, and has not withdrawn into misanthropy and apathy, as many other PCC teachers have. Does not tolerate any form of racism.
yup, he is insane. and to him things are one way and one way only. can be strict at time and does not allow ipods or phones in classrooms. he went off on one student who brought it out. 10 pg. midterm and inclass final exam essay. 1 main essay 4-6pgs. 3 theme papers and about 5 discussion papers. tons of writing in his class, not to mention him!!
hard class but you learn a lot
is good professor but class is hard..... very easy to receive a B but almost impossible to receive an A.... too biased in his own views, dont know why an anti-war professor is teaching a world war class......
Basically, he is easy to talk to helpful and very into history. For those who've talked nothing but smack about him its about time you get your head out of your a$$ and realize you just Fu<ked up. He doesnt fail anyone who turns all their work in. the guy is an amazing professor and friend.
Mr.Zarate is a great teacher. I love his class. He has so much passion when its comes to history. He may be hard but he makes you earn your grade. Oh and always turn off your cell phone.
This is indeed a hard class and you best show up every time to take notes and hear what he hhas to say. you will learn so much and he is a very helpful teacher, i highly recommend him. there are lots of little quizes, like 5 points each every week, but they aren't too hard. just keep up your work and you'll do fine.
Zarate is a cool guy outside of class and can be cool sometimes in class. Assignes reading too much, couple books to read, a 12 page mid-term, 5 page essay, in class final, 3 theme papers, 4 discussion papers. This guy is anal about cell phones and gets crazy when he see's one in class!! It seemed like he is not himself at times.Your choice to take
He's pretty incompetent. He does a bad impersonation of Jon Stewart. He loves to try to impress his students how passionate he is about them learning to critically analyze and question historical events, yet, he plays obvious favorites to former students who kiss his behind. I learned more reading the books by myself. Yes, I did get an "A".
I had a great experience. This was my first college class after being out of school for more than 20 years. Definately not a class for slackers or thin skinned, narrow minded individuals. He kept the class interesting during the lectures. Seemed very passionate for his work. There was lots of reading and writing but he graded quite easy.
Great passionate teacher, but be warned he is VERY hard. If you're lazy and dont attend class or do assignments don't take him - even he himself warns you the first day. A LOT of work, but if you do all the work you are GUARENTEED a C. One of the comments below already lists his requirements for papers and final. Great tough teacher.
on the first day of class, he might act like complete a##hole, but stick with the class. there might be a lot of reading to do, but he gives a lot of time for you to read the text. i'm fresh out of high school and i still managed to get a B. If you do the work, you will pass and if you show that you care, you will get an A or a B.
Prof. Zarate's actually a pretty great teacher. He's very honest & upfront. First day of class, he may seem very intimidating, but he just wants to make sure his point gets across, he has no pity for slackers. So, if you plan on taking his class, make sure to attend all the time, it's mandatory b/c absence doe affect your grade. All in all, you'll
Wonderful/Great Professor, but beware. His class is a "minefield." There are 1001+ steps he makes you do to get a good grade and if you mess up or forget just one, expect to get a C or lower. If you keep up with ALL readings, assignments, and papers, a B is obtainable. An A is next to impossible.
This teacher is terrible. He does not care about you.
CANT EXPRESS HOW AWESOME ZARATE IS! BOTH 2A AND 7A ARE VERY DIFFICULT CLASSES! BUT HE IS SO PASSIONATE, AND MAKES THE CLASS WELL WORTH IT! HE WILL GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO HELP YOU, BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE AND EFFORT, (AND I STRESS THE WORD HAVE TO)! HIS ONLINE-CLASS IS JUST AS HARD/HARDER THAN HIS IN-CLASS, DON'T BE FOOLED! ZARATE IS THE BEST OUT THERE
IF HE WASN'T ALREADY MARRIED, I WOULD WANT TO MARRY THE MAN! HE IS THE GREATEST! TAKE HIS CLASS.... NOW! ONLINE - INCLASS.. WHO CARES! TAKE HIM! ZARATE IS THE SHxT!
Very intimidating. He gets in a bad mood very quick and plays by FAVORITES. I would attend his class everyday because he said he would fail u after 3 absences, but one of his favorites would RARELY show up and i'm sure he passed her, i was very annoyed and he is not a good person unless u kiss his ***. Passed with a C.
He's mean. I walked out of his class upset and frustrated. I don?t' understand how they let him get away with it. In opinion, he is an unreasonable man; he needs to realize that not everyone has the time to right 10pg papers every week. i work full time, and i could not keep up. IF YOU?RE hard working, I?m sure you'll pass, but I could not keep up.
So much work!!!
Finally a college level class in COLLEGE! Imagine that! Yes, there is a lot of reading, keep up. Yes, is is ALL papers. GO TO CLASS. His lectures are pretty amazing and interesting. Take good notes, its all in there. I thought I would work my butt off for a B, but didn't care because I was LEARNING. I got an A. You'll get out what you put in.
Zarate is boss. Dude knows his stuff. Sure, he's demanding if you want an A; other than that he's cake. Do the work and you're guaranteed a C. His 'mean' attitude is just a scare tactic to make space for people who have the time/care about their grades. Only a couple people dropped, so I guess it works. Cool professor, really engaging lectures.
DO NOT TAKE HIM ONLINE!!! you MUSt be a great writer and LOVE to write papers to be able to stand his online class. I heard that he was so so with his regular class. The class isn't that hard but the work load is A LOT! there are no breaks in his class.
Extremely meticulous and thought out. Helped me understand the concept of war.
He is tough and expect to do a lot of work but he makes himself very clear from the beginning. He loves History and has no patience for laziness or indifference.
A big Hypocrite and Plays favoritism. He uses his students to his advantage outside of class but he is very interesting on lectures. Discussion are biased to HIS opinions and your opinions do not matter, and he claims that his style is different than other teachers, but he is the same as every teacher who claim they're different.
I have three hints to help any student interseted in taking professor Zarate suceed. The first one is the most important one, in order to do well in zarate's class you MUST participate in the inclass discussions PERIOD. If you are shy or terrified of public speaking SUCK IT UP because if don't participate in the class discussions don't expect to ea
Lectures are spectacular. Provides a narrative that counters popular beliefs to bring about a more open minded way of seeing history and the world. Sure there's bias, but most if not all historical narratives contains bias. Great teacher, great class. As long as you work, read, and talk, you're practically guaranteed a B. A's are a bit tougher.
Professor Zarate's teaching methods are incredibly useful in achieving a true understanding in history and the a world trying to figure out what is right and wrong. His course History 2A is the beginning step to becoming an intellectual thinker with sources and facts to back up what you say. A great teacher for students eager to work hard for an A
All about what forces were at work & who the people were, not what happened. Class requires serious critical thought. Discussion participation is essential. Don't be afraid, just speak up! Study the assigned chapter maps in the textbook for the weekly map quizzes. Also do Hist 20 if you can. You'll get more than just a grade from his classes.
Great guy. Hard grader, but he tells you that the first day of class. i learned less about history and more about how to actually think in his class. hard midterm/final, but still one of my favorite profs at pcc ive taken. dont expect an easy A though.
Great teacher! Not alot of work. No tests but do get plenty of quizes. Midterms, and finals are essays but if you read, and take good notes you'll do fine. Your guaranteed to pass if you do all the work. Highy recommend him for those serious history majors.
Warning: if you plan on taking his online class, you will work very hard every week just to complete the assignments-no breaks. You learn a lot, you will become a better student. Lots of reading and writing. Enjoy!
Zarate is one of the most challenging professors I have ever had. I not only learned about World History, but I learned how to be a better student. This is a legitimate college level class and if you can?t do the work in this class I really don?t know how you will get by in any other school once you transfer. To pass you just need to do all of the
Zarate is a great professor, he's really good about getting back to emails and communicating with students. He has a massive superiority complex, and openly admits his racism for Europeans. He heavily downplays Europe's role in world developments. Don't take him if you want a balanced view of world history.
good teacher, but i wished i took him when i wasnt fresh out of high school.
LOL. If you work full time. You do not want to take this class. Worst class I have ever taken. This class, just this class should be a Masters Program in History. Everything is essay format.
Prof. Zarate is a really good professor with high expectations. I took him in Fall 2011 for HIST 9A. If you do ALL your work he will pass you. If you're a freshman in college I suggest you do not take him, he demands for too much work but then again you will learn A LOT!!!If you don't like writing essays weekly or reading do NOT take him.
prof Zarate demands students to be an adult - they have to be prepared, be ready to word hard, and even improve in their writing. he is engaging, puts on a great show, and does not tolerate incompetence. overall a fun and challenging class.
Freshmen, doNOT take this class unless u are a badass writter & love to read & write essays. Normal ppl, read everything take lots of notes & go over notes before u take tests on-line & visit him for help on 4+page essays. A+ students, climb off your horse & help your peers understand the material & do participate but don't be snobs about it.
VERY HARD CLASS. He expects a lot. That being said, he's very passionate about teaching. I took winter intersession and there were 50 people trying to add. He let EVERYBODY add even though it gave him an impossible amount of grading. Just shows that he is truly on the students' side. He claims to be a jerk but I think he's actually a nice guy.
Took his online, winter class. Avoid it like the plague. Though I'm not sure if I would like to take a on-campus class with him. He's self absorbed and a jerk. You might think he's a 'god' if you have never thought critically about history, which is where all the rave reviews come from on here. Take someone else.
im currently taking his class & from the very first day i knew this was going to be one of those class: you know, the one whos hw you have to work harder on & stay on top of. i love that his main goal is to get us to think critically! im not a history person, so im probably learning more than anyone else. just "dont get lost in the narrative"
One of the coolest teachers I hace ever had. Im not a hist major but he makes you understnad hist in many different ways. A lot of work but if you do it you are going to pass with a C or better. Very helpful. He is all about the students and creates his class to our needs. But did I mention a lot of work/reading
He is one of my favorite professors ever! He is so dedicated to students and will do everything in his power to add everyone who wants to take the class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES UNLESS YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT WORK! He will help you but has high expectations. He is such an inspiring professor and his expectations have made me such a better student
Left the class after the first day. This is my experience from 1 day.Zarate yelled at a female student for no apparent reason. When I say yell,he yelled like a psycho.Zarate said that PCC students who get A's are "hoaring for their grades".He said female Asian students at PCC dress and talk a certain way to get A's in class.Zarate is a creep!
Seems to me like he's just tired of lazy people. Although his class is loaded with work, he's also very encouraging and clear. He tells you from day 1 it won't be easy. He's straight forward and no bull! Kinda like the real world I guess.
Zarate is an intimidating teacher, but a good one. From the first day he says that the class will be difficult, he also doesn't take any bs. Class consists of lectures and readings from books he assigns. A lot of people tend to drop his class in the first few weeks though so only take his class if you feel that you can handle constant work.
Read the books. Do the work. Get involved with in class discussion, and you'll pass.
I dont know how this professor is in traditional classes but his online class is organized well, but would be even better if he were not in the picture at all. His comments are unclear and are not constructive, his video lectures are so awful and hard to follow, he looks uncomfortable and desperately struggles to read his own notes, don't recommend
I have taken Professor Zarate for a multitude of classes and looking back I would say that he was the best professor I had when I went to PCC. Currently a HST major at CPP and I can tell you that Zarate teaches his class like an upper division course. If your a HST major, Zarate will prepare you when you transfer out. Highly recommended.
the professor is very professional..you can tell he's very knowledgable however he teaches lectures over powerpoint that sometimes are bad and he skims fast through lectures-cant take notes because of this.. lots of reading class is 1/2 hybrid and the rest lectures..Wouldn't retake class just because of all the work- great teacher but lots of work
Really great professor. He assigns a lot of reading but all the reading along with the text connect to each other and sometimes contradict. It's all about weeding out the BS facts that we learn about.
He's very impassioned during his lectures. He's also pretty funny and friendly for the most part. He assigns at least 100 pages of reading every week, there's a lot of essays and quizzes, and he's unclear when answering student questions. Don't take if you're slow or if you don't have lots of time for HW.
Took 2 online classes during extended spring/summer sessions and passed. As long as you understand what historical narrative writing is and you ACTUALLY take time to read all the material you will pass and actually learn a thing or two. DONT procrastinate! His classes WILL prepare you and make you a become a better student, if you put the effort!
This class is not by any means an easy A. If you are looking for that kind of professor don't take him. I would only recommend you take him if you a passionate history major. If you are not one don't take him. There is a lot of reading and writing! The only upside is that his course is clear cut.
Really fun professor, learned a lot. He was pretty easy for me, though there were a lot of others in class struggling. There's a lot of writing and reading, but just stay on top of it and you're guaranteed to pass. Don't forget to participate class discussions, they have a huge impact on your grade. Strict-expects plenty from you.
Professor Zarate is the best teacher in every way possible, that I have ever had. And I have had a lot of amazing people guiding me throughout the years. The level of respect that he shows his students is astounding. He is stern, and not an easy to please Professor, but that is because he truly cares about his students. One day I'll pay him back.
Great professor. Very strict, but rules are actually simple (no phones, no sleeping, good attendance). Workload isn't terrible. NOT an easy A, but do the work and you'll pass. Easily the best History teacher I've ever had. However, if you're more worried about your GPA than learning, you might not want him. Otherwise, I highly recommend him.
Extremely difficult. Refuses to give full credit on assignments doesn't follow his own rubric and grading is unfair. An A is unattainable with this guy. He is rude when asked questions on the coarse. There is a lot of extra credit that MUST be done. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!! Most difficult online class you will ever take.
Really hard. He is not helpful when it comes to getting help, kind of rude too. Really hard class and not very clear on what it takes to do good work. He is nice though about other things like the general messages. Not good if you don't have time or need an easy A
I love this professor best one I ever have, easy to approach, love all the books READD THEMM! he makes you read. Make you have wider perspective of History. Discussion is important! Very straightforward.
The bottom line for Prof. Zarate is... DO THE WORK. Having a basic understanding of the readings for the quizzes and contributing during discussion will earn you an 'A.' Attendance? Doesn't matter if make it to the 15th week. Show UP, the the work, and you will earn your A... even if your essays don't reflect that. READ: DISCUSSIONS! CONTRIBUTE!
BORING subject matter. Too much work for a 6 week summer class; He give's you the same amount of work in the 6 week, as he does in his 16 week. I DO NOT recommend this instructor.
Here was our midterm assignment: "Write 6 pages about WWI." Very frustrating teacher who gets called cool because he curses a lot in class.
I love this class & this Prof! He makes class fun, interesting and you will learn the material. His group sessions seem intimidating at first but he makes you feel so comfortable! I will definitely take his class again!!
Most unclear class I have ever taken. Very unprofessional.
He will talk a lot, but you will learn quite a bit. First half of the semester has minimal reading, but second half is where you MUST be on top of your work. He's funny, professional, knows what he's talking about. He is great with answering student's questions and I feel that there really are no stupid questions with him.
He is unclear of what he wants. Confusing. It took me a while to figure out how to get an A: Always reference his PowerPoints and notes, he likes that. I'd rather take professors that actually challenge you instead of professors where you have to mold yourself in order to get an A. He's "hard" just because, not for any legitimate reason.
This professor is very confusing on his quizzes. He comes off rude when you ask for help. He also has a big ego that's hard to be through. Despite everything I think he has the potential to be a great teacher if he gets off his high horse and has patience for the students that actually do want to learn. Good luck taking this class.
He is a self proclaimed"unpleasant person"... His words not mine. I wouldn't recommend taking a class from someone that floats about that. Just my opinion.
He expects you to completely dedicate yourself to his class and his class only. He gives no clarity.
He's strict.
He is strict thats not the problem. The problem is that he is quite rude when you ask him questions about homework.
He is a fantastic instructor and you won't learn more from any other professor at any college. He definitely makes everything easier to understand and relatable. Class will never be cancelled so expect that, and it's alot of work but you're learning. It's not hard, it's just time consuming like any class.
He's unprofessional in a way he talks sometime usually profanity trying to relate to us students but he's very passionate about history & knows what he's teaching. There are quizzes online which you have to take weekly on chapters readings. There's also book readings & quizzes. Midterm paper and Final paper. PARTICIPATION is crucial in this class.
His online course was challenging since we had to complete about 4 essays every week for the 6 week course class. I like his lectures, videos and extra material. What I like the most was the fact he was clear about what to expect and homework was also clear on when to submit it. Very professional!
Prof. Zarate genuinely cares about teaching his class. He accommodates students that are simply trying to pass by giving clear directions and by providing you plenty of study time. If you want an A, though, you have to work for it - he can tell if you blew him off. He's also very funny and if you so much as ask, he will always help. I recommend him
Professor Zarate is such a great professor. I had trouble with History but his lessons, lectures, and readings helped me out a lot. Anytime I emailed him for questions, he responded within the day. The essays he makes you write help you understand the material a lot better. If you just do your work, you'll pass his class. Take him!!
Lots of reading. Quizzes can sometimes have confusing wording. Helpful when you need it.
The online 6 week class was EXTREMELY BRUTAL. He assigns LONG PAPERS, lots of BORING reading, and IRRELEVANT busy work. IMPOSSIBLE to get an A or a B in this online class. If you're looking for an easy A general-ed class, this is NOT THE CLASS TO TAKE! You have been warned!
This was one of the most hardest 6-week online class I ever took at PCC. He assigns 4-5 long research papers every week, tough online reading quizzes, discussion papers, and is a very tough grader. If you do not devote your life to this class, it is GUARANTEED that you will FAIL. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truly values critical thinking over rote busy work. Yes, you will have to read the book, write essays, and take quizzes every week, but you will gain so much more about the world and he will challenge you to think deeper. These are the qualities of a TRUE university-level professor. Not exactly the most easiest class, but you WILL LOVE IT!
This 6 week online class was the hardest class I've ever taken. If you want an easy A or are lazy, this class is NOT for you. There is so much reading & writing to do. There is a quiz and essay for each chapter & there is an additional book that requires a paper and a quiz. Take advantage of the extra credit he offers. Do all the work & you'll pass
UNNECESSARILY HARD CLASS. STRESS-FILLED 6 WEEK ONLINE CLASS, BORING CONTENT, HARD GRADER, TOUGH TO PASS, PROF IS NOT UNDERSTANDING TO LIFE SITUATIONS, MORE THAN 60% OF ORIGINAL CLASS DROPPED AFTER A FEW WEEKS. DEFINITELY NOT AN EASY A OR B, YOU WILL STRUGGLE JUST TO BARELY PASS HIS CLASS. IF YOU DON'T NEED HIST 2B, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!
He is rude and gives you many many unnecessary long assignments. He asks you to write a paragraph but expects you to write two to get full credit. He is just brutal and turns history the most difficult course youll take at PCC. If you love yourself and want to get decent grades AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
His quizzes are tough. You really have to know word by word for each chapter quizzes.
Some of his assignments are made to help you be a good student (looking at the world differently, how to pass a class, etc). But most of this stuff was unnecessary as it is just a history class. Its very good overall for any student. But if you took college 001, his lessons aside from history will feel useless. I just want the class for 3 credits.
Not encouraging. Day 1 - he announced that 1/2 the class will leave and 1/2 of the remaining students would not pass. He worked from a 1st Edition textbook (out of print) when the school only sold the 3rd Edition. Timed quizzes were very difficult. So stressful - just tried to survive. Do your extra credit! I like history but he made it miserable.
By far the best history professor I've ever taken. His classes are challenging, but do the reading and you'll do great! I would recommend his class for anybody who's thinking about becoming a history major. He teaches you historical thinking skills needed for University. He's teaching you for the real thing! I still use his materials and readings
Zarate is an engaged teacher who gives lots of feedback on assigned essays and strives to help his students succeed. His classes are on par with other reputable college courses. If you are serious about transferring to a four-year university, and want to be prepared for the academic demands of that path, Zarate is the best choice.
He truly cares for the success of his students. Weeks before the course began, he continuously emailed the class and made us aware of the syllabus and what we were to expect. A lot of people complain about the difficulty of the course. Professor Zarate does an outstanding job on covering decades of world history in only 6 weeks. Will take him again
He is probably one of the best teachers/professors I have ever had. He was so good that I decided to take his 2A class. He gives lots of extra credit, which adds up quickly, and he's accessible basically anytime and anywhere.
Professor Zarate gives off this vibe that he is tough. But the reality is that he is really kind hearted and wishes only for the success of this students. You have to remember that nothing in life is easy. This class is one of those adversaries that will prepare you for the future. I thought this was going to be another boring class. It isn't.
Brings real world experiences to post modern times. EXTRA CREDIT. Quick responses via email. He is NOT a tough grader. Clear grading criteria, do the min and you will pass, go above, bring up your GPA. Motivational, lenient, and most importantly passionate about his career. Individualized attention. Open office hrs. Effective pedagogical practices
Prof. Zarate just changed my life. If all the PCC teachers have this attitude towards the students life would be so easy. Prof. Zarate is one of the kind I will never regret that I took his class. I learned so much from him. He is so caring with his students, he give office hours and help the student who need extra help. I will miss his class.
Great lecturer, really cares about the material and makes you care about it too. He also cares about your grade more than you do. Don't expect him to lay everything out for you though, his class will be tough if you're lazy or never check Canvas
He's tough, but fair. Be prepared to read ALOT! Attend class, participate in class discussions, and write your essays and you should be fine. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
He can be a tough teacher but he's definitely worth it. He is very inspirational and passionate as a teacher & can be capable of guiding you toward your goals. As long as you do all the work you will pass, & most importantly you must read the books he assigns, not much as the course one. Whatever you do don't drop his class!!!
This class has completely changed. He no longer requires long essays each week. Instead there is one long discussion post and one response to a peer. Be detailed! There are 2-3 chapters to read each week with quizzes (in the winter session). The quizzes are difficult but not impossible. He offers weekly extra credit, Do it!!! Interesting class.
Professor Eloy really made the class interesting and challenges your ability to reflect on world history. His online class was an easy A but you do have to put it in the time and effort. He did not require long essays at all! His discussions post had to be a minimum of 250 words. He is also a fair grader. I would recommend taking his class online.
This Professor truly challenges a person academically. He is very passionate about what he does for a career. I attended his face to face History 7A class. I would recommend taking him if you are ready to be challenged.
Great
I took the class online over the winter intersession. You do have to read to do well in his class but it is not bad at all. If you put effort into the class you should do fine. He offered weekly extra credit and extra credit on the final test. You will have to do weekly discussions and an essay.
If you planned to have history as your major, it is good to take him. Otherwise, try to avoid him. Once u take him, you probably have no time for other subjects! 1 textbook 3 extra books + quiz on the books quiz for every week write an essay regarding 'what did u learn' Extra Credit every week (essay type) he prefers u write as many as u can.
I thought this class was going to be less stressful than my others. I was okay with the extra work we were assigned. I needed help with a quiz I needed to retake. He was absolutely rude about it and wasn't professional at all. Even towards the end of the course, he was still rude in his emails. very demanding and isn't professional about it.
Doesn't use Canvas properly and grading is an actual mess. I'm a straight A honors student and CANVAS pro and even I was baffled by how convoluted his grading is. If you want to pass his class just praise him and how he's really blowing your tiny millennial mind w/ his condescending lessons. don't take him, navigating the grades is full time work
Once choosing him, you have no time to work on other subjects. I spent more than 90% of my time for his subject, it doesn't worse for that.
Do the work on time and you'll be good. But, FYI in his own syllabus he says he's not very nice and has admitted that he never gives full points. Best part of his classes are the John Green extra credit vids and open-book multiple-choice quizzes for each chapter. He often sends out rude e-mails, then will send a nice one right after or vica versa.
Professor Karate is a great professor. He is somewhat challenging but in a good way. Some people look at history as a easy class, but he challenges you to go into detail about what your studying. He also looks to provide the resources for you to succeed and does a good thing by doing his book loan for students.
He's an honest guy and I can appreciate his attitude towards the educational system but he will 9 times out of 10 go on a tangent before starting the lecture. However, he provides the reading material for this course and often gives out extra credit due to his method of grading. He's definitely the type of person to make you work for your grade.
He never gave full points on anything. He stated in the syllabus that he wasn't a very nice person and it showed in the announcements he made to the class. Don't rely on Canvas for your grade as the weighting is wrong. He offers lots of extra credit, do it! Overall pretty easy class.
Great teacher cares about his students & community. Knowledgable, and passionate about what he teaches. Every week you have an online quiz 10 questions, but they are straight out of the book super easy. Can't afford don't worry he has them and rents them for free. Weekly online discussions reg/what you learned in class. Super easy final & midterm.
He's blunt with what he wants. Tough grader especially when he grades your work to other students in class. You'd have to email him professionally formatted for him to reply to you. There's plenty of extra credit. Points not percentages. Don't take this class during the summer if you're taking another class. Lots of reading.
He genuinely cares about his students and understands that they have other things on their plate besides his class. He makes it clear that if you complete the work, you will pass, no matter how exceptional/poor it is. If you honestly try, you will get an easy A.
I took his online class during spring semester. Do not get scared away if you are taking his online class. It might seem like it a ton of work to do but it is very manageable. He gives you a chance to do extra credit every week. Do not procrastinate in this class or you will feel very bombarded.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is extra and gives way too much work! Dropped his class before the drop date luckily
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken. That being said, I would 100% take it again. After I got used to the work load, I found the course content to be very interesting, and I don't consider myself to be a history person. If you work hard you'll develop a new historical perspective that I found to be worth the all the work.
Professor Zarate's communication style takes some getting used-to because he is very blunt, but I got past it after awhile. Overall, he sets clear expectations in his syllabus and offers plenty of extra credit opportunities. He gives a lot of homework and is a tough grader. An "A" is doable, but he'll make you work for it.
Professor Zarate is very rude and makes you feel stupid after you put in a lot of work. Super tough grader. Do not take this course with other classes, tremendous work load.. He does respond very quickly to emails and grades fast. Overall, too much work if you are just looking to fulfill credit for history
I know you're reading the reviews & think you can be better. Seriously, I've had straight A's until this class. He literally does not give As out just to seem like a hard professor. His grading is EXTREMELY unclear. He'll give a C as the lowest grade, then if you work really hard he'll give a B. If you're aiming for an A, don't take this class
This man is absolutely insane. Looking at Canvas for our class average, it doesn't look like anyone has an A & he thinks he's so exclusive for doing that. What? We're trying to transfer... Save your GPA & don't take this class. I know a lot of students who are working to report him. He thinks he's inspirational when he's not. Hate this class!
Do NOT take this professor! Absolutely RUDE, condescending and unprofessional. Ridiculous grading policy and don't you dare ask any questions about the assignments. Obsessed with plagiarism, yet all the exams are on Quizlet. Baffled as to how he became a tenured professor. Got an A, but I learned nothing in this class. Utter disappointment. Avoid.
Lots of reading, but once you get the hang of the schedule its easy!
Tough grader! Pay VERY close attention to grading criteria. Do the extra credit! Ultimately, he will usually work with those students that have low grades and give them a chance to make up work and pass with at least a C. He wants his students to get their credits and transfer.
Makes you really work for it. Online its the same routine every week. He gives you extra credit every week but its impossible to get the full 7 points. He is a very tough grader. But! You actually learn and are taught how to think more critically. Too many professors become jaded. Hes not. I recommend if you care about the subject and intellect
Hands down !! The best professor I ever had !! He is caring, and takes the time to explain everything!! You will learn from him, and appreciate his willingness to help you understand all that you need to do in his class. Im a better student because of him 10++++
I took Mr. Zarate's class a while ago, but he is the most memorable professor I have ever had at Pasadena City College. I took his class on Latin American history and learned so much more than I did at the University of California. I think it is very fortunate to have him as a professor at a local community college. Do the work, you'll get an A!
He a wonderful professor. DO take his online history 7A class online you will learn so much. he expects to write a minimum of 750 words or more. If you do all his assignment including extra credit you should be able to pass the class. He does care for his students he will find a way to help you pass. you have to try.
Zarate focuses a lot on details. He is a very tough grader, and I could not understand his rubric. If you ask him a question that the answer is in the syllabus, oh man you're in for a whole bunch. I mean I learned some interesting stuff from the class. But the thing that I had problems with was his way of talking to people (quite rude).
You'll have to do most of the teaching yourself. His lectures aren't very helpful and he isn't good at communicating exactly what he expects. He starts the class emphasizing rigor and attention to detail but even his syllabus is vague, typo-ridden, and even contradicts itself. When I brought up valid issues with grading he basically said too bad.
Lots of reading. But if you do all the work it is easy to get an A, especially if you do all the extra credit.
He is a really caring and nice professor. Just do the extra credit work and the assignment you be fine. As long you're trying you will pass the class. He cares about you. I guarantee you learn something after finishing this online course. Don't argue with him. show him you can do the work. you want to read ahead of time before taking the test.
Honestly, this class was so easy to pass. Follow the syllabus and turn in everything before the due date, it's not that hard. You have to put in effort. He does care about you succeeding, so message him if you need help. Gives out extra credit every week, not every professor gives out extra credit.
Honestly, the best professor I've ever had. He cares so much about his students and wants/ will do anything to help you succeed, in and out of the classroom. I even recommended my dad to take his class. Anyone who dislikes him must be incredibly lazy because it is impossible not to pass. His lectures are amazing and cover a wide spectrum of topics.
I've taken two of his classes because he has a good teaching style. Just beware that he never ever gives full credit. I have never received a perfect score on any thing that required him to grade. So his grading is harsh if you depend on your GPA. His comments are always "good answer" but obviously not.
Had him twice (7A & 2B). I gained so much knowledge from this class that I still remember a year later. He is repetitive with story telling & we spent most of the semester re writing his syllabus. I want to retake him for the lectures but I wont bc his grading is way too unclear and lowered my gpa even though he praised me on being a good student
I took an online class with him. History to be more specific. He is rude in his emails and the amount of work he requires is ridiculous. In almost all of my classes i have an A but its impossible to keep up with this class.
This professor has a lot of knowledge, but he wants fresh-year students to have all his knowledge too. He doesn't understand that he has been in a long path learning history, so he can't expect students to acquire the same knowledge in a short time class. I like History, yet I wouldn't take another class with this professor.
Took his online class during the winter session. It's A LOT of work, but doable. Discussion posts every week and respond to 2 classmates. 2-3 chapter quizzes every week, one term paper. Everything is from the book, so definitely read. You really have to put effort into those discussion posts. He won't give full credit just for doing it.
This professor Zarate is A+++++ I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of reading and learning from professor Zarate, if youre serious about learning history please take him youll have no regrets. I grew leaps and bounds from professor Zarate and have the upmost respect for him and his deep dedication for the subject.
One of the best teachers at PCC. I took him for HIST007A and HIST02B, both online. Truly passionate and will push you out of your comfort zone in order to think about the bigger picture. Do the reading and homework as well as all of the extra credit and you should be fine, though his grading criteria can be sort of hard to figure out sometimes.
A solid teacher, make sure to get the textbooks as that is where all of our tests are from. Really seems to care about the students as he will always do what he can to help you pass. Extra credit is also a bonus!
The Best professor for Winter/Spring semester. He is a real gem and caring person, thank you for all that you do for us (Students)
Anyone who has value for their education definitely do not take any class with Zarate. The syllabus & assignments have way too many typos. Guidelines are vague, but requires a lot. If you have a question, he's unapproachable & extremely childish. He emphasizes not to stress, but is the epitome of stress. I was really looking forward to this class.
His is a style thats very close to junior or senior work at a university. If you plan to continue this major then take him! He will prepare you for whats really required of you in this field. If you plan on majoring in something else take him! He really makes you see the world differently and teaches you how to question it.
Bruh this guy is something else. I had him for summer for less than 3 days and he already wanted 2 assignments done and made canvas much more complicated to use than necessary and assignments hard to find/do. He needs to organize canvas before doing online classes. He put the "syllabus" into a video so it was impossible to do things at your pace.
Honestly, he had few really good reviews so maybe its just me but he's kind of unnecessarily rude. For a few of my canvas messages he did not reply which was not helpful at all because I took his online class. Basically he will not answer you if the answer is in the syllabus, which I kind of get, but be helpful for your students who have questions!
This class was a joke. If you need this class as a prerequisite and there is no other options, go for it. This professor will critique your grammar/knowledge but won't give you feedback. This is almost comical, as his syllabus is basically illegible. Very disappointing for students who rely on professors for motivation and basic feedback. Good luck
this class wasn't "hard", but it was very confusing because he's not very clear on what he wants. We could do exactly what the assignment says, and we still won't get full credit. Not only that, but we are never told why he didn't give it to us. messaging him does help either because he's either being immature and rude, or he'll simply ignore you
When I asked a simple question about a due date, he became verryyy passive aggressive and demeaning. What is his problem you may wonder?? I have no freaking clue. I quickly learned not to ask him questions.... I learned nothing in his class.
Terrible teacher at any level. Way too much work and test for a 3-unit class. Very subjective and unreasonable when dealing with students. He does not like students asking him any questions and he has no problem expressing that. I learn NOTHING from this class, material was not to bad, but dealing with him was. DO NOT TAKE HIM EVER!!!!
Bottom line: If you dont wanna to work and just float by through college, dont waste his time. All the negative reviews are from people who couldnt care less about their schooling. Zarate is a geneniue and caring guy, he works too hard for people to be so unappreciative. Dont listen to these people. Take his class and see!!
It is mind boggling knowing the most charismatic teacher I have ever had has so many poor reviews. This class is not for you if you are lazy and do not appreciate his effort. These times are hard, and he knew that. Shame on all the people who gave him a poor review, sorry youre unable to take college seriously and be a team player.
This professor is full of himself. He thinks his course is challenging, but in reality, he's just a difficult person to please. TIP: If you want an A in those so-called "essays," just reference all his notes and power points because his ego likes that. Aside from that, make sure you read the smallest of details for his quizzes. Good luck!
this teacher is a joke. He is super boring, talks about irrelevant things, complains about his job during class, didn't really learn anything. If I paid to take this class, I would be pissed, since I am not learning anything and he just repeats himself every class period, beginning his class on how people are not showing up and he cries everyday.
He has a crappy attitude, super unhelpful when it comes to asking questions online over text, super boring, not very interesting content or teaching method, talks about irrelevant things, complains every day about his job, not very specific when it comes to essay assigning.
His modules a lot of the times are very unclear, so you need to sit there for awhile and understand it yourself. They're not organized as I would like them to. Like people have stated, his work is not at all easy. I wouldn't reccomend him at all. Did not feel comfortable in his class. Not worth the stress!
Who the hell asks a student to tell them their weekly schedule hour by hour as the first assignment? Also, why is his syllabus 10 pages long? While he may claim to be flexible for his students, he asks way too much and isn't able to teach enough to actually help students complete their assignments. Stay away from this man. He's unreasonable.
The class ended before it began when he states In his syllabus that hes not a particularly pleasant person Who says that? His content is too much and he talks and writes in circles. First assignment was meant with harsh/ demoralizing and condescending response. I cant believe hes still employed since pcc teachers are awesome. Dont take him!
Text for this course is very interesting and the lectures do a good job connecting the text to the big ideas that can be taken away from the reading. Professor Zarates modules were well organized and supplemented with videos and he provided extra credit opportunities every week, the most I have ever seen a teacher offer. Fun & rewarding
Honestly all the negative reviews are a result of students expecting to receive an A while doing no work. This class isnt meant for students who are lazy, as long as complete all assignments ON TIME and put effort into your work you should be successful.
Do NOT take Prof Zarate. This was easily the worst class I have taken during COVID. Half of the material he makes you read is never used or it contradicts the book, the quizzes are all very specific and useless numbers you have to memorize and he is rude and egotistical in all of his emails. Take a different class!!!!
Wow, I am surprised at all the negative feedback. I took Professor Zarate's history class over 15 years ago, and I still remember how much I enjoyed his lectures. You have to put in the work by reading the materials and homework. I have my Ph.D.--so I have taken MANY classes, and Prof Zarate cares. He just does not put up with BS excuses.
This was an easy class and I learned a lot. There is an expectation to read- use your time wisely. Aside from reading and time management, watch Prof. Zarate's lecture videos for the main content. He explains historical concepts with broad frameworks. He's not asking you to regurgitate facts but rather contextualize them. Get used to writing.
I'm not too sure about this professor. His modules are all over the place, and contradict the assignments. I appreciate his effort but it is too excessive. It is difficult to understand what you are supposed to do. Not clear at all. Hopefully I get through this summer course.
The entire class is just an ego check for him. He gives ungodly amount of work and when students can't finish them he ends up failing them. I don't understand how I find this course harder then when I attended Vanderbilt. This teacher will become insulted if you don't follow his many many rules to a T. I recommend with all my heart to not take him.
I got the impression that Prof was a harsh grader & "not caring." Upon finishing the course, however, I can assure you the latter isn't true. Prof gives the gift of discipline, something that will be taken differently depending on the student's mindset. Prof made me a stronger, autonomous student; something that can't be yanked out of a textbook.
Choose your professors wisely. My father passed away the first week of school and he was the only professor who did not reply to my multiple messages. I had to email him many times. I requested to meet with hum so that I could schedule a time to turn in my work and he would not meet with me. He doesn't have students best interest in mind,
Vague writing expectations + strict grader + vague feedback, how am I supposed to improve? Lots of extra credit, but I'd rather just have the points I already worked for Extremely disorganized, canvas is a mess + syllabus and canvas have conflicting information Email responses so far have been unhelpful Teaching myself, again
I don't think this guy would pass his own class. He's unorganized, his expectations are unclear, and he's way too eager to take points off. So far the only feedback we've gotten is a single battle royale-style announcement, telling us who wrote the best discussion post one week. I wish I had dropped when I had the chance.
I enjoyed this class, but it is very lecture heavy. You must view the lecture videos, read the online textbook (free), take the chapter quiz, and complete a discussion board every week. Every week, there is an extra credit assignment (very easy and boosted my final grade from a B to an A). Overall, a great class.
its not a particularly hard course if you are not taking any others alongside it... but there is lots of reading. I took a 6 week course and I was spending maybe 3-4 hours a day. Textbook is free. Half of the content is him talking about how its important to see other sides of the story in history, that about all I can recall; didn't learn much.
Kind of a ridiculous amount of work for an online class in an introductory course, but you can keep your grade up with the quizzes. The professor is really mean for seemingly no reason, and doesn't really respect our time (the first assignment is an hour by hour breakdown of our schedule???). I don't know, find someone else.
Professor Zarate is a great professor! I took him in the Summer of 2022. If you watch the videos he provides, and do the work, you will pass. I learned a lot and not having to read a book for the class was a plus. He is a very different prof. in his style of teaching but I loved that! He is an honest professor who wants his students to succeed.
Just finished up summer 2024 with his class and it was a good breather from STEM. His course was well structured and engaging despite it being entirely asynch. Impossible to do poorly with the amount of EC opportunities he provides. He challenges you to think for yourself, rather than fall into the bias of the instructor. Great guy for summer class
Full time job worker here while taking units, this class has a lot of homework, class assignments, and quizzes. Very time consuming, get ready to read a lot,v take lots of notes, pay attention, and forget having a life outside of this class. Easy to get along with, he will work with you if you are falling behind but lots and lots of work
I took Prof. Zarate in the Winter with one other class, not recommended. His class requires a lotttt of reading and quite a bit of writing. But if I had to take more history class, I would take him again. He is a terrific person and professor, he gave it his everything and I learned SO much from his class. He uses free online textbook.
Professor Eloy was really kind and understanding although he keeps in line with his syllabus, he provides so many extra credit opportunity its actually insane. He also responds really fast like 10 minutes tops especially on a weekend night. It was simple to do the assignments and learn material even with a busy schedule. Free textbook too!
Professor Zarate is a really interesting person who cares about his subject. His teaching style is a little weird, so I would recommend staying on top of your work and getting everything in before deadlines to avoid trying to get any accommodations from him. Can be passive-aggressive and sporadic, but he cares about his students in his own way.
I really loved taking this class with Professor Zarate over the summer. He uses open source textbooks, so there is no excuse to not read the material. I loved the lecture videos he did with his wife, they were always fun and interesting. He can be a tough grader, but he is very fair. Put the effort in and you will do well in his class.
