She teaches from powerpoint slides, and posts all of them online. You don't really have to read the textbook to know what is going on in class. Pretty laid back class. I regret buying the textbook and course reader because i did not use it once! so do what you want. She is an ok grader, not bad as long as you try
The prof. is very clear and organized. I like the cartoons and graphs she uses in class. She took the time to explain things I didn't understand...very helpful and accessible. A bit of a hard grader but I understand why I got my grade...answer keys she provides are very helpful. Overall, interesting class.
too many slides. boring class. attendance mandatory. no quizzes, 1 paper, 2 midterms (one is take home), 1 final. non cumulative. strict on getting paper in on time. -1/3 of a grade each day late. only get textbook if you want to read.
This professor is cool! She takes great interest in the subject. Presentations are based on power points. If you pay attention in class and read her lecture slides - will pass, no problem. We had 2 midterms and a final, and 2nd midterm was take home. 1 paper. I absolutely recommend her.
Prof. is nice. She is well organized. Classes are based on power point presentations. If you have any concern at all about this country - this is your time to learn how politics work in the US. Prof. is fair with grading, and tests are reasonable. I recommend this class to any Baruch student.
very knowledgeable professor who cares about her job and is always extending herself above and beyond what is required. the course is definitely challenging, but it's very informative. professor is also very nice, but not a push-over. she expects you to work hard. she is a pretty tough grader. she is down-to-earth...overall, very quality professor.
Professor was always prepared and the class went by quickly due to her style and personality. I would take a class with her again.
Professor De Graauw will go out of her way to help you. She has office hours and responds to emails quickly. BUT, its not an easy A, she's a fair grader. Print her slides b/f class and take notes on them then study the lectures and you'll do fine on the exams(it helped me) Over all she's a well-qualified professor! TAKE HER!
she is a good prof. you will have 5 quizzes, drops the lowest.. midterm and final.. test are not bad but you do have to put in some effort of your own, not an easy A. She is pretty cool.. one thing i loved about her is that she replies to emails really fast so you will not have prob. getting in touch with her. She cares for her students, it shows.
whoever wrote too many slides below should note that it's one way of saving time instead of writing lectures on the board and her slides are very helpful because she breaks them down so you can understand.. the class isn't boring if you engage in the lecture, its interesting.. and she never stops anyone from asking questions ofcourse=)
Super boring, but very straight forward and easy. It's a good class to sleep or to catch up on your other work. The professor is very nice and extremely orginized.
TAKE HER CLASS!!! She's the best. One of the best teachers at Baruch. She is very very organised, her syllabus is straightforward. Five quizzes, she drops the lowest grade..Midterm and Final very manageable. She is so helpful and always responds to your emails. She is always available out of class to assist. I so luv her!
Organized prof. willing to help&reply emial super fast.not easy class need some effor to get A. follow her steps will be good enough.understanding the contents of her slides is important&attendin class is helpful for understand.go back to book everytime before tests go over key terms.most test Q on her slides but some in the book.participa helps
Don't take her class unless your willing to teach yourself outside of class, i mean come on she takes the stuff from the book and puts it on her slides.. don't we already read the book? BORRRIINNNGG CLASS ! wasted my time and grade will be bad as well... did i mention boring?.. if ur forced to take her like myself.. bring a laptop, you will need it
Loved her class !!!!! she is a very helpful prof. don't miss the quiz though, you can't make up for it.. she does drop the lowest though !!
if you like reading, political science then take this class. i studied hard, but still didnt do good job. do not take this prof. if you want EASY A from prof. 5 quizes lowest will be dropped, midterm and final and 1 essay. she clearly states what u need to write about, but still i found this class hard. prof. will reply ur in at most in 2 day
Good prof. people seriously its college.. either study or don't. She can only teach the subject, she can't change gov't for god sake... final, mid-term, 5 quizzes lowest is dropped and a short writing assignment helps boost up your grade.. What else can you want? she puts in her effort to help students but students need to help themselves too..
This professor is extremely organized. Her lectures are interesting if you have previously read the book or BB readings. I'm a foreigner so i like the way she teaches politics. On the essay paper i got an A. What else can i say?? Just read whatever she says to read and you will do well.Good class!
good professor, make class interesting.but if u dont pay attention to the class you will fall sleep.not easy class but read and make sure you know everything she mentions on her slides.<to prof:I think slides are necessary for us to study, I found students who only read slides but not listen to class wont do well enough in their tests.laptop's ok>
I enjoyed the class, she's cool, she's helpful.. hehe you will hear about California a lot though.
Els is a new school professional professor. Her class is run entirely by Power Point and follows a strictly regimented syllabus. But outside of that she is a real charm and is eager to invite questioning and input from students. I would suggest her to anyone, especially when taking american poli sci classes because she is a foreigner. left/center
This professor is fair. The lecture slides can be borinnngggg but if you really try to pay attention its actually not that bad. Her grading is based on a point system so you can pretty much keep track of your grade as you go along. I wish i got higher in this class but i barely ever studied or paid attention. No ones fault but my own.
Very good teacher! She is strict about rules but jolly with the students. You have to study a lot! Hard class for non-native English speaker like me.She will drop your lowest grade. If you can read a lot take her!
Good Class, Prof. ELS don't let the students use the laptops because they took advantage of it.. i could see they surely didn't use it for lecture purposes, and slides you should keep because they help during exams to break down everything.
GOOD CLASS, I'LL MISS THIS CLASS :( SHE IS AN AWESOME PROF. QUICK REPLIES TO YOUR EMAILS, 5 QUIZZES DROPS LOWEST, SHORT PAPER, MID-TERM N FINAL. FAIR WITH GRADING, ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP!! TAKE HER.
Els is a very likable professor, both personally and professionally. She was very clear in laying out the goals for the class, and I found her exams to be extermely consistent and straightforward with the material we learned. If you pay attention (take good notes) and participate in her class, you will do well. Plus, I think she's pretty sexy.
I love this prof. took her for spring 2010 and she was a sweetheart. She is very helpful and quick when it comes to replying emails, she loves teaching politics and you can see that because of the enthusiasm she holds during every lecture i wish she taught accounting so those classes won't be as boring.. I miss this class your awesome prof. Els =)
SHE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER. EXPAIN EVERYTHING VERY CLEARLY.HOWEVER, THE MIDTERM IS HARD,WHICH CONSISTS OF ALL SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
A GOOD TEACHER. IN EVERY CLASS, SHE GIVES US A CLEAR LECTURE ALONG WITH SLIDES. WHENEVER THE STUDENTS HAVE QUESTIONS, SHE TRIES HER BEST TO ANSWER THEM. GIVE A LOT FEEDBACKS TO US, MIDTERM EXAMS AND WRITTING ASSIGNMENT
Very nice professor, gives 5 quizzes and drops the lowest one. Midterm is a bit difficult, consists of shorts answers and three essays. Final is multiple choice though. Overall shes a pretty good teacher, just make to read the lecture slides and book and you should have no problem.
This class had a lot of potential and I was disappointed. The coursework/ lectures may have been straightforward, but I felt as if it was dumbed down. The lectures were boring there was minimal class discussion. The class is her reading off slides or playing schoolhouse rock videos. I was mostly bored in this class, but it's an easy A.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!! She gives a ridiculous amount of work at least one essay a week. Is a very strict grader, not fair at alll and feels the need to make a comment on every sentence you write. Emails you every 2 minutes! She also takes weeks to return assignments. None of your work is ever good enough for her!! DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor is knowledgeable but her "fair" point system is less than that. Demand to know the numbers. She is an extremely tough grader, for honors she holds you to an unreasonably high standard and grades thusly. Lectures are interesting but class is reading intensive and the assignments, although small in number, are long and tough.
She is nice and helpful, but she cares too much about her students cause she gives a lot feedback on the midterm and paper. Gives 5 quizzes and drops the lowest one. Midterm is a bit difficult, shorts answers and three essays. Final is multiple choice though. Send a lot email. It seems that she loves technology. Study her slides and you'll be fine
She is nice, even funny. She only gave us 3 single page assignments, a midterm and a final- non cumulative. Her classes are kind of boring though, Mostly says what's on the slides. You will know the info just by reading the textbook- no need to listen in class.
Prof Els explains courses like a doctor to the patients.I recently found out that she is a PHD, but she explains things in a way students can understand. Furthermore, she takes extra time to help if you still didn't still get it.No workload. 1 midterm,1 final 3 essays. She is amazing. Take her.
She explains things well. She's an easy grader and really breaks down the class going over things multiple times so people really get it. No need to read the textbook just focus on the slides. 3 short assignments 1 midterm 1 final. Great class.
This Professor is amazing! Take her! She's patient and gives free chocolates!
Great professor; explains material well. Very funny, keeps class engaged. Haven't fallen asleep once, so must be a good sign!
Professor De Graauw is very organized, utilizes blackboard and all available technology productively, and explains the material thoroughly. Her slides are great tools that facilitate learning. I will take her immigration course and would recommend her class to everyone. She also gets bonus points for giving chocolate at the beginning of class.
Great professor, keeps the class lively and fun, a little tough but if you put the work in, do the readings and hw and attend class you'll do fine. She always helps, responds quickly and communicates a lot so you'll always be up to date. I recommend her and she gives chocolate in every class!
Great professor, keeps the class lively and fun, a little tough but if you put the work in, do the readings and hw and attend class you'll do fine. She always helps, responds quickly and communicates a lot so you'll always be up to date. I recommend her and she gives chocolate in every class!
Very organized, and super nice professor. Three short essay homework, one mid-term test and one final test. Class is interesting. Questions are welcome. You will get chocolates before the class. If you want to get an A, you should spend time in in-class discussion and after-class study. Slides cover all the materials. Review sheets are available.
She is a great teacher. The class is extremely structured. She makes the topic interesting and challenging. However, the challenge is worth it. You will come away from this class knowing something. She makes the classroom a relaxed environment. You will enjoy this class.
Great Class! Very well organized. Very clear, and engages the students. Put effort into the 2 writing assignments and study for the midterm and Final and you should do great in this class.
Professor DeGraauw makes sure to organize an interesting course. I didn't know how interested I was in immigration policy until I took her class. She's always providing excellent feedback, and makes sure you fully grasp the concepts. She wants to see you succeed. Put in the work, and you'll be rewarded greatly.
An excellent lectururer, well informed on the subject. Was a little too reading-heavy, structured more like a graduate course. Despite this, she was a fair (if generous) grader and was easy to talk to. She sends a lot of emails which are helpful. Types all class notes daily and puts them online. A LOT of policy and dates to remember!
Professor Els De Graauw is passionate about the subject she teaches (immigration)... please be prepared to read daily reading assignments which can be lengthy and dry. Class discussions can be informative feel free to ask questions if you don't understand.. take as much notes as possible!!!
Very knowledgeable on the subject matter and clearly explains the reading and the context for better understanding. Has a very cheerful demeanor which contributes to class participation.
if you love your GPA DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! the most boring class that I had ever took. Assignments and test are long and difficult, and she only gives B. if you will take this class be ready to read and write a lot.
Do not take this course if you're not interested in immigrationneed an elective. This course requires a lot of your time & energy, and in order to keep you, you have to be interested in the subject matter. I enjoyed the papers as well as the class discussions. The final is take-home but definitely more challenging than the in-class midterm.
Professor De Graauw is a wonderful, organized lecturer. She is incredibly well versed in the subject matter. The class requires time and effort. Make sure to keep up with readings and take great notes in class. Her feedback is clear and I feel like she made me a much better writer. Great class!
I took this online class during the Spring semester and it was much better than other online courses I've taken. Professor de Graauw was very clear on what needed to be done and submitted every week. The amount of reading and work was fair and I thought her online lectures were engaging.
We have to read a lota lot of materials for every classTests are really really hardWe have to write a lot in the test. If you want to take this classget ready to readreadread
Amazing professor! She is supportive anytime! I can get helpful answers via emails and I enjoy talking to her! The lectures are well organized and she explains clearly. And students also feel free to ask questions. I do make a lot of progesses in the semester. The class inspires my interest in politics, and professor helps and encourages me!
Professor Els De Graauw is a great lecturer who is very knowledgable in the field of politics and is crystal clear and very well versed. Make sure you do and submit her assignments on time! She does NOT accept late work, which may be difficult for some who may not be interested in the subject. Make sure you follow her crystal clear directions!
Great professor! You will enjoy her lectures and videos! You will definitely learn in this class.
Prof. De Graauw is really knowledgable and devotes a ton of time and effort in making sure the class is enjoyable. There are generally good discussions as well as lectures. Would take her again as she is one of Baruch's best political science professors!
Wonderful professor, wonderful woman. Absolutely brilliant. Learned a metric ton about immigration in her class. If you have the chance to take any of her classes, do so. If you can put in the effort, you'll have an amazing experience. 10/10 would take everytime.
Great professor. Weekly lectures and assignments. Online midterm and final. Very fair course.
Professor Els De Graauw is a great lecturer who is very knowledgeable in the field of politics and is crystal clear and very well versed. Make sure you do and submit her assignments on time! She does NOT accept late work, which may be difficult for some. overall she is one of the best professor at Baruch college, she definitely knows the subject
Great online class! Easy to follow and requires moderate amount of work. Midterm is very comprehensive, so unless you have read the material, you can be overwhelmed with amount of question and time limit. The presentations with discussion are the best thing though! I would just loss them on my iPad and watch on the train!!! Loved that
One of the best professor at Baruch College. very Intelligent and helpful with writing research paper. Provides useful feedback.
Professor de Graaw is an amazing professor. I took her for my capstone on immigration and it was a great experience. She's very knowledgeable on the subject and an excellent resource for the final research paper. There's a lot of reading and the work is somewhat intense but if you're in it to learn she's definitely the best out there. Not easy tho
I loved her class! Extremely fair and clear with grading criteria. Weekly lectures and posts, one midterm and one final. Presentations can be downloaded and watched offline for convenience, and her reviews before the exams are extremely helpful. If you follow all the guidelines and rubric it's impossible not to get an A in this class.
Great professor & class. Midterm, final & discussion/media forums. Grading is clear - gives great feedback, helpful professor. Do all your work and following the grading system and you'll be great.
Professor De Graauw is one of the best professors in Baruch College. She puts a lot of effort into her class and her passion about the topics shows. Take her!
Professor De Graauw is a real asset to Baruch. I have never been inspired, challenged and addicted to checking in back with my HW and discussions. She is very knowledgable, intellectual, fun Professor who respects everyone and gives great feedback. I would not say this class is hard. It is rather challenging, interesting and won't regret it!
Prof de Graauw served as my thesis advisor and I highly recommend reaching out to her if you are interested in topics related to immigration (I already have). She provides extensive, honest, and helpful feedback, and goes above and beyond to make sure her students succeed. She's also incredibly patient and encouraging. I will miss working with her!
If you want to learn and broaden your knowledge, you should consider taking Professor De Graauw. It is a great class that you can consider taking as an elective. You will learn a lot and learn how to debate. Gives a great feedback and cares about her students! Make sure you don't miss deadlines and you will be fine! A great class to boost your GPA!
One of the best Professors in Baruch! Very caring and fair load of homework! Participation matters a lot so make sure if you want an A, just do your job! Will miss her!
Read material and book first because her lectures explain it in easy to understand way and she makes it relevant.
A great online class. Weekly assignments on blackboard, midterm, final, and 1 discussion leader task on bboard. A harder grader on the midterm and final then I expected but the weekly assignment is easy to get full points on if you follow the instructions. A lot of reading, but you can skim some if you look at the questions first. I recommend it
Professor Els de Graauw's immigration course is a must-take in the current political climate. She's informative and witty in her lectures, and she's honest with her feedback. She's a tough grader, and you should not take this course to obtain an easy A. She gives weekly assignments on blackboard and 2 take-home exams.
Do not expect to pass without working hard. I learned a lot from this class. Th e discussions are very rewarding. She is a tough grader not easy to get an A
I genuinely enjoy going to this class. The material is extremely relevant to the current political climate. There are a few assignments on blackboard, most work was centered around 15 page paper that is your final. Professor de Graauw is extremely helpful and understand and makes time for her students. Highly recommend taking her class.
The professor was extremely kind and knowledgable about the subject she is teaching.
I think professor Els De Graauw is a kind and caring professor. She makes time for her students and explain the course material very well in person if we have problems understanding the work. She listen to my personal issues whenever I am experiencing stress and melt-downs. She always encourage me to keep at doing my best and be strong.
if you like to write papers this is your class. go to her office for your paper, she will make your life easier. she gives a looooot of feedback . last day of class she came up with games and prizes. not your typical class. No exams. just think.
For this class you'll need to put effort and spend at least 2 hours reading for the weekly assignments. There are PPslides, Youtube videos and readings assigned; make sure to understand and read carefully what professor is requiring in the week's post if you don't your score will be affected that (5points) week. You'll be a discussion leader1week
The syllabus is very straight forward in terms of grading and what is required. You have to watch the lectures every week or else you'll be a bit lost! It's a very interesting and intellectually challenging class- only downside is if you miss one post it really packs a punch on your grade. Just have good time mgmt and you should be fine
HONEST REVIEW: Although all As in other classes &missed only 1 DB post, I got a B grade on this one. However, the exams are the aspects of this class where she graded very harshly. I would say that you would need a Ph.D. in US immigration to get an A in this class. If you are interested in immigration but want to raise your gpa, then dont take.
1 BB post per week, response due on Thurs, response to 1 other student due on Sat, 5 Points per post, 250 words Max, go over that, no credit. 1 Midterm and 1 final, both multiple choice & T/F. Must be a BB Post leader at least once, its graded. Overall its not hard however there is a lot to read per week, and she can be a little harsh with grades.
Awesome Professor! Assigns very interesting readings. Grading criteria and assignments broken down. Very helpful during office hours if any questions. A must take class!
I take this class for credit, but actually, she is a nice professor with well organized lecture slides and other learning materials. One assignment per week, easy stuff. If you participate every week by submitting your assignment online, and prepare for the final, you can get a eassy A.
Shes a fun, easy, and caring professor. No quizes or tests. 2 presentations, a website and a final paper were all that were assigned. Overall, going to class was engaging and informative. Also, she is always available for help, which I used intensively for my final paper.
Professor De Graauw is an extremely understanding and caring professor. She gives excellent feedback and has a very clear grading criteria. The readings can be tough but she will break it down to the max for you if you simply just ask.
Honestly took this class as an extra elective. She is a super nice professor but it is definitely not a light online course. It is fairly graded and structured which I like about this class but not an easy A. The midterm is online multiple choice, not terribly hard. The discussion boards are weekly but you cannot just do them and expect full credit
Prof. de Graauw gives excellent feedback that will guide to the right direction towards the final product. Amazing class! Take her if you're interested in social movements or if you would like to learn more about them. A lot of readings, but only two presentations and a final paper!
This class is asynchronous with very informative recorded lectures. There are fun blackboard posts every week. Professor De Graauw always provides great feedback. There are weekly quizzes but no midterms/ finals or papers. Surely take this class if you wanna learn about immigration policies. She is a great professor!
Taking this class fully online and Professor did an excellent job of maintaining communication throughout the semester. Assignments and expectations were stated clearly and always organized. Also welcomed insight from both sides of many controversial topics. Would take again and clearly cares about her teaching subject and students.
She gives great feedback and is on top of all the assignments. She is clear on her grading criteria and what she expects from her students at the beginning of the semester. Her lectures are easy to follow and comprehend. I would take a class with Prof. de Graauw again.
Professor De Graauw is great. She is organized, clear and gives great feedback on assignments. Her lectures are interesting and I learned a lot. I would definitely take another class with her.
This class is an asynchronous online course with no textbook cost, Professor Els De Graauw, provides the lectures, reading materials, and textbook. Everything she provides will be helpful for your writing discussion prompts, and if you don't understand your assignments, she is very flexible with Zoom meetings. I highly recommend this course.
I don't know why there's many good comments about this professor. However, You have a better choice. taking her for free elective, but she's a hard grader. It's a very small chances to get 5/5 from her discussion board. Please don't take her. GPA killer
She wasnt the friendliest to speak to. I avoid contacting her. No point in reading her other stuff just listen to her lectures. Thats all she cares about. Oh and always be Pro immigration as that is what she is looking for.
She provides a lot of flexibility for students. I went the whole semester keeping up with my work and now in the final week, I do not have to worry about work because she drops the lowest discussion board assignment great. She understands students and gives some opportunities for extra credit.
I really enjoyed learning about Immigration in her class! She assigns weekly lectures, readings, and multimedia which come out to roughly 2-3 hours a week, along with a quiz and two short responses which take roughly an hour all together. The lectures were asynchronous and highly informative. She is very passionate about Immigration and Integration
She is caring, however, she does make sure that you work for your grade - so be prepared to work. My only advice is to make sure to read and have a thorough discussion on the topics she presents. Although I am very liberal myself, I would like to see a greater diversity of opinion within the discussion board (besides devils advocate).
Get ready to read and write. 3 memos (3-4 pages each), 1 paper proposal (4 pages), 1 paper outline (4 pages) and a Final Research paper (15 pages). She loves group discussions so be ready to participate. Professor de Graauw gives good feedback and is always available during office hours.
Professor De Grauuw's class is so interesting, despite my lack of interest in immigration. She is very knowledgable about the topic and brings a lot of enthusiasm to her lectures. Though there is a lot of reading, it is all relevant. There are weekly discussion board posts, but she is a very fair grader.
The class requires a lot of reading, the readings are very long. It's an interesting class, she keeps students engaged and is super knowledgeable. She provides the note-taking sheets. Your grade will comprise a weekly DB posting, note-taking sheets, 2 papers, and office hours. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you.
Excellent Professor.
you shouldn't have a problem with completing assignments if you do it on time. there are in class notes you have to take during each lecture and they are part of your grade. (don't take this class if you don't want your hand to be sore) the material is interesting but she can be very passive aggressive sometimes. everything needs to be printed.
Professor de Graauw's class was honestly one of the most engaging courses I've taken at Baruch. If you're considering it as an elective, just know that some assignments will require you to put in the work. That said, she's very understanding, offers extensions when needed, and even provides opportunities for extra credit.
This class is a lot of work. You also have to do a presentation on a particular reading.
This class has no reason to be this difficult. She is a harsh grader. You will get points deducted on your midterm if you fail to write the exact date. Her testing format is remembering 40 ID term and only testing you 3 of them. You will also have to write many short responses, give the definition of vocabulary words, and describe pictures.
