Seems really nice, but is extremely hard to understand. Understanding her writing is a struggle, all while deciphering what she is saying through her accent. Gives weekly assignments which lets you know how well you are doing, and what area to study more. Doesn't post any notes online, only assignment solutions. Avoid or be ready to teach yourself
Good human, but not a good prof. Her lectures are a struggle due to her handwriting, which is very hard to decipher, and her accent. Weekly assignments are given which helps you understand how much you know. Her lectures are barely understood. She rushes through her lectures causing her to make mistakes and is unable to explain what she is teaching
she is nice but really hard to understand. her accent is bad and her voice is so low that you cant hear it if you are sitting at the back. she just need to improve her accent you can understand & hear well
She is very nice and very helpful during office hours. Would recommend if you have trouble with math
much improvement recently noticed ! she is good
she is nice
This is the second time for me taking 1001, trying to bring my average up. I did not have her the first time, but the second time I did. She has much easier tests then my previous prof, just practice her example tests and assignments and you'll find them easy.
Good Prof
She is nice and helpful
Never uses her own materials since starting online learning. Takes small tutorial videos from one teacher and assignments from another. Never actually gives lectures, even though it's calculus..... do not take her course online.
Do not take her class. She never posts lectures. Gives a ton of difficult homework, and my doctor has better handwriting.
Doesn't post her own real lectures, short clips that don't cover all the necessary material/ examples of the same difficultly we are expected to know. Overly difficult assignments with questions that we would not be able to be asked on exams. Also difficult to make out her notes and solutions to problems.
I am a good student in math and am struggling in her class. Lectures are 5 minute videos from someone else. Examples in notes are simple and on the assignments are very long and complicated. Nice person but I would not take again with her. Only way to get through is with a tutor. No actual classes or teaching makes it very hard to learn anything
Avoid at all costs! She is the worst teacher I ever had in my life. She only posts around one hour of lectures a week (not even her own lectures) and also only uses other teacher's assignments. We did the easiest examples in class and then on tests and assignments, she would use the most complicated questions possible. Also super hard to reach.
Really nice teacher!! Very kind and passionate.
STAY AWAY. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE TEACHER. You won't understand anything that she says, she's pretty much impossible to reach, uses lectures from other teachers, and assignments are nothing like what she teaches in her live tutorials. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
the worst prof ive ever had
I would not recommend taking this class at all. She posts short conceptual explanations from other professors and doesn't post actual lectures. You would barely understand her in live tutorials and her handwriting is awful :(
I am a great math student. I'm struggling in this course. Pain. Stay Away.
Friendly, accessible, knowledgeable, provides lots of material for exam prep.
I am a working student and I enjoyed the short videos. Lots of homework and difficult quizzes but the midterm was fair. Dr. Cardoso Bihlo helped me many times with the assignments.
STAY AWAY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Easily the worst prof I've ever had. I taught the entire course to myself with absolutely no help from any of her teaching. Posts a handful of 5 minute long lectures every week (made by someone else) then gives practice assignments that are riddled with errors and inconsistencies. Stay away.
just don't lmao... she's caring and all but I'm telling you, the 5 min videos she uploads of other professors which legit talks about the most basic thing in lesson and then you get quizzes and assignments then are EXTREAMLY hard. Also the final screwed a lot of people over so if your into torture then by no means go for her :)
So lets get this right. The professor as a person is nice. But as a teacher, really disappointing. Lectures explains the really basic idea of the topic. The lectures are not even done by her. We get one office hour per week which you don't understand anything from. Assignments usually include topics that isn't covered yet. The course was chaotic...
she is very absent as a professor and gives incredibly hard assignments and tests. she takes days to respond to emails, she posted a series of short lectures by another prof. her accent is very strong and I would no recommend taking her if you have trouble with accents. shes very nice though which accounts for a lot.
She is very kind and understanding as a person, but as a professor she is extremely bad. Her participation to the class was 0 to none with lectures being taken by other professors. The lectures teach the basic bare minimum while her assignments and quizzes are extremely difficult. If you tend to struggle with math then I don't recommend taking her.
She's a really poor lecturer. Her examples are chaotic and needlessly complicated. Not the best at explaining concepts. Course design was messy - had to go looking for the material. She was nice enough, but would not recommend her if you are looking for a thorough understanding of the material.
This professor makes the class hard for no reason. If you understand the homework and webassign, great. Just know she will surprise you with the most ridiculously hard questions where your grade matters. She teaches the material based on basic questions then surprises you with questions that are tough for no reason.
She is just not good at explaining math. She reads out the numbers and doesn't explain where they come from. The videos from other profs explain the basic concepts, but it doesn't prepare you for the quizzes/assignments. Everything you are graded on is extremely difficult. I spent a fortune on a tutor, and that's the only reason I passed.
I loved this prof. Elsa was very helpful and quick with replies. The recorded videos were clear and easy to follow. Would take again!
This professor tries really hard to ensure students understand the material and do well. She seems to struggle with organization (e.g., mistakes in the practice assignments she provides), but her openness to feedback and questions makes up for this issue. Complete all the practice materials she provides, as they are similar to the graded material.
Very heavy accent, terrible handwriting (not a combination you want from someone teaching you calculus), and skips steps and doesn't explain where numbers came from
3 exams make up your grade. Hour-long lectures are seemingly recorded seconds after Elsa wakes up, with incomprehensible writing, and vague, confusing explanations for questions. She often skips several steps in lectures and solutions for practice work. She takes days to reply to emails. Not happy to take her course again. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
This prof explains nothing. Skips steps in her lectures which are painful hour long videos of poor handwriting and reading off numbers without explanation. YouTube taught me more than Elsa did this semester.
As this is my second time doing this course, with the same instructor, having live lectures really made a difference in actually understanding the material needed. The professor does have an accent, but after a while you get used to it. She provides different practice assignments with solutions every week. She is kind and very accommodating.
Her proficiency in the english language could use some work, tends to use AH alot as she gathers her thoughts. and her handwriting is sometimes hard to read, but you get used to the style and then you are alright. She makes up for this by giving out easy tests. She provides pratise tests that are almost identical and her grading is quite fair.
She is a nice lady but she has a very heavy accent. She posts lectures online and are almost impossible to read and understand. She also got multiple answers on the practice exams wrong which really confused me:( She has good intentions but should not be teaching math 1000. I practically taught this course to my self.
I had to retake this course with her this semester. posts videos with minimal info that isn't even her teaching. The information is hard and she doesn't make it any easier to learn. Seems like a very nice woman and is easy to reach over email if you have questions. Overall disappointed with the online teaching.
Professor Cardoso-Bihlo, does not know how to teach. Her penmanship is horrible, and she cannot explain the concepts, and has a very strong accent. She also gets frustrated and angry at her students, when they ask questions. STAY AWAY!
Around 100 people dropped 3 days in. You cannot understand her, she explains the concepts that don't matter more than the ones that do. Only professor available? Do get on a waitlist and pray cuz you will end up dropping anyways.
Easy marks , just go through the problems from worksheets and have a general idea of what is goin on in the class. She gives practice tests and if you can solve all the questions on those tests , youll get an easy A
Elsa should have a much higher rating. I dropped this course i my first semester and retook it with Elsa over the summer. She grades MUCH easier than most other math profs, and gives much easier assessments. Also extremely easy to get in touch with, and very accommodating. An A is possible in this course with Elsa!
Much easier grader than any other math prof at MUN. Midterm and final were very reasonable. This is a difficult course (if you aren't strong in math) but Elsa definitely makes it reasonable. I started this course with Sullivan, but then switched to Elsa's class and did MUCH better (grade went from a 33 to a high 80). Also SO sweet. Highly recommend
She is so sweet. Very easy to talk to if you ever have any question about grading. I once went to her to discuss my assignment and she bumped up my grade 10%. She also grades very reasonably, giving lots of part marks (which is essential with a math course). I am not strong in math but I ended up with a very high mark in Elsa's course!
Should have higher rating. Grades much easier than Sullivan, and her evaluations are a lot more fair. Gives lots of part marks!! Very accessible outside of class. No complaints. She gives lot of practice material which are similar to midterms and finals. This is a difficult course, but a good mark is very achievable with Elsa.
With this prof, I'd recommend some outside resources (textbook, help centre, youtube) because her lectures are solely big-picture topics. However, she is a fantastic professor. She provides lot of practice material, questions, old exams, etc. Grades very fair, and gives fair midterms. If you do enough practice, you will be successful.
Fair grading.
Her videos for the online course were great! Explained the concept well enough to make the problems solvable.
Brutal. Mistakes in every single practice assignment, makes it impossible to learn from them. Mistakes in every single lecture, very confusing to follow. When a student corrects her mistakes she will not fix them. Even in the midterm there was a critical typo in a question. Impossible to follow along, just watch YouTube videos! good luck!
Great with office hours. Assignments do sometimes contain minor mistakes, she fixes them when notified though. Gives practice exams that are almost identical to the midterm and final exam and gives lots of partial marks on exams. Makes an effort to ensure students understand the material during lectures. Take advantage of the math help centre.
AS A PERSON, Elsa is not bad, she'll help you make up missed assignments in any way possible... BUT she is sometimes hard to understand and her writing is less than adequate, incredibly hard to read. Had to teach myself the ENTIRE course because she was little to no help when it comes to teaching.
SHE IS THE BEST! she literally gives out practice exams that are IDENTICAL to her actual exam. if anyone does poorly with her it would be from a lack of effort because she makes it so easy to do good!! she is a really caring professor and will do anything to help you succeed.
Gave lots of good practice. Helped narrow down questions on midterms and exams.
Once you get used to the accent, she is actually a very good professor! Her lectures are easy and straightforward and she gives very easy assignments. Her exams are nearly identical to her practice exams. She is a fairly good grader. Would definitely take her again!
Very kind and caring prof. She takes her time to go through examples and review small things from previous courses if need be. Has even reopened quizzes for students. Downsides are her accent which makes her hard to understand and messy writing. Her worksheet answer keys aren't the most reliable either
Honestly she's not great at teaching; she has a thick accent and messy handwriting. However, her practice worksheets are very similar to her exams, and she is much more fair with her grading than other profs. Personally I'd skip her lectures, get a tutor/watch youtube tutorials and just do the practice worksheets over and over.
50/50 experience. Lectures weren't great (used other sources), incomplete/incorrect practice paper answers, messy handwriting, incorrect marking/answers in quizzes and missing lecture notes. However, Lenient grader, extends deadlines (even if missed) and exams questions are similar (some cases identical) to practice questions. Nice person overall.
Her writing can be messy, and her lecture notes may have some errors. Errors in her notes are minor. You can easily figure out the correct solution on your own. Exams, quizzes, and assignments are all easy. She may have an accent but you can totally understand her! She cares a lot for her students and is really approachable.
She's really great and really seems to care about how her student do in her class.
Found class hard, lectures hard to understand her and pick out hand writing, does extend deadlines for assignments
Elsa was an awesome person, less than an awesome professor. She wants the best for her students and is a very easy grader, however, be prepared to teach yourself with practice assignments and online resources. Her notes are very difficult to read and, at the start of the semester, are fairly difficult to understand.
Very disappointed in this professor. First midterm graded very unfairly, giving me 0 marks on a five mark question, when one mistake was made. Did well on the second midterm, and was feeling very confident for the final, until the final was ten times harder than the practice I was given. Likely failed the course since the final is worth 55%.
Never had a worse experience, and the issues continue even after the exam was done. All Math 1000 classes have their final marks back, except for her classes, even though the exam was written 2 weeks ago. My anxiety is through the roof waiting to see if I managed a pass despite her horrible teaching and grading schemes. Avoid if you want to do well
If I could give a zero I would. Her lectures are hard to understand with her accent and her horrible handwriting. Broad concepts don't get much explaining. Horrible at answering emails, emailed her for help well before the final never got a reply before or after the final. Unhelpful. Do not take this prof if you wanna do well.
She was very sweet and caring. She does have an accent but it wasn't bad and I could still understand everything she was saying. She does weekly quizzes instead of assignments. She doesn't provide much practice for the final but her midterms were relatively easy. I would definitely take her again.
Great prof. very interactive with students. Explains things very well and does many examples. Foreign accent but easy to understand. writing isn't great but still intelligible
very nice and wants the students to do well. I had taken this course before so I understood everything pretty well, but i can see how it might be a bit hard to understand the topics because her explanations are lacking a bit
I very rarely attended classed. With that noted, the lecture captures of each class were great, she even included extra lectures on thursdays (non class days) made on her own time discussing difficult topics from class. best prof ive ever had hands down
She is nice as a person, but as a prof, she is awful. Her writing was messy; her notes were all over the place and inconsistent. If it weren't for tutoring, I absolutely would not have passed the course. However, her practice midterms and final were almost identical to the real deal, which is why I got a good mark. Avoid her if you can.
Despite the bad comments, she is far and beyond one of the best math profs in my opinion. This is coming from someone who took her course long ago and has experienced many more math profs while majoring the subject. You'll be thankful you took her, as long as you actually go to class (or watch recordings), as her notes are VERY good.
Really nice prof. Practice midterms are exactly like the real one and she takes input from the class when coming up with assessments. She makes small mistakes in her examples and has messy writing that can be hard to follow at times. She always posts solutions to assignments/quizzes and notes and lectures online if you miss class.
Calculus I is probably the most difficult first year course there is. However, Prof Bihlo is amazing. The practice midterms and final exam she gives is literally identical to what comes in the actual exam. She makes passing Calculus pretty easy. Trust me, I have done this course several times with different profs, it doesn't get easier than this.
She is very nice and clear about what she expects in exams. I would advise to use the textbook as well even though I found the textbook could be unclear many times.
Dr. CB is so kind and caring, and very willing to help students. Her lectures though, were quite disorganized and she often made mistakes (to the point where I gave up taking notes). She is very clear though in what she expects for tests, and is a very nice grader.
Dr. CB is a very accommodating and accessible professor. She clearly wants her students to succeed and often asks for feedback. She is open to re-teaching confusing concepts, is clear about what is on tests, and answers emails quickly. Sometimes textbooks are needed as she skims over concepts/assumes they have been covered in prereqs.
Wish I could rate her higher, but her lectures and notes are terrible:( She does cares about her students, easy grader, and tests are almost identical to study guides. The material is not hard, but her classes have been no help. If you need to take her class, prepare to likely need to find an alternative learning method like tutor or YouTube.
Definitely would take again. I have always struggled with math and this is the first time ive done well in a math course. She is very clear and understanding. Her practice questions for exams are almost identical to what will actually be on the exam
One of the best profs i have had for Math (2030 and 3030).Grades really well as long as you follow the guidelines. And is very lenient about extensions.
Dr. Bihlo is a great math professor! I struggle with math and she is very accommodating outside of class time, responds quickly to emails and is a very very nice person. Her practice exams are almost identical to the actual exam and ensures her students will succeed. She is also very lenient on assignment extensions and missed quizzes.
The practice midterms she gives out are identical to the actual test! Very soft spoken but super nice she was very accommodating with due dates!
Dr. Cardoso-Bihlo is an amazing prof. Going into this course, I hadn't done math in 5 years and failed the mpt and ended up with an A due to the amount of care, effort and help from this prof. All tests and quizzes were very fair with most people getting As on our midterms. Truly can't recommend this prof enough, she is the best!
Elsa is one of the best professors at MUN. She treats students with respect and always gives great feedback and help via email and in real life. I personally struggle with math A LOT, but found her class really nice
Professor Cardoso- Bihlo cares about her students and wants them to do well. She gave weekly quizzes and assignments which were helpful to learn the material. She gave practice midterms which were exactly like the midterms. However, the final exam was very difficult. There were questions on the final which were never taught in class.
