Elyse Yeager was a really sweet professor, always staying behind class to answer a multitude of questions. I personally found the class incredibly hard, being an English major in a Calc class, but she was always able to easily answer questions and explain concepts in a clear way (well, as clear as Calc can be).
She's an amazing prof. She's really funny and very clear in explaining things. She is also very friendly and helpful during her office hours. If you don't understand something, just ask her. Do the webwork and attend workshop, you'll pass
Really great prof. Explains things very well and I hardly ever found myself wondering what she meant by this or that. Also just a very friendly person who teaches with a lot of enthusiasm.
-Only uses projector and slides (never blackboard) -Makes simple mental math errors occasionally -Friendly, but not the best at explaining
Gives a lot of practice problems, makes sure everyone has understood the content before moving on. Great prof!
One of the best profs I had. The lectures are very clear and she tries all she can to make everyone understand. Her tests are not the easiest, but if you go to the lectures and the office hours you cannot fail.
Elyse, thank you so much for a wonderful semester! She made the content so easy to understand, and as long as you do the textbook questions, really take the time to understand the concepts, and try as hard as you can, you'll do really well. Make sure to go to her office hours - they're super helpful. Thank you so much for everything!! :)
Really kind and enthusiastic. Also uploads her lecture slides online which is really helpful. Probably the best 152 prof of my semester.
Took this class and got over 90%, ya, believe me, the course is super easy. Dr. Yeager is very helpful during office hours and doesn't mind going overtime occasionally. However she is not the best at explaining. I ended up learning most of the material by myself.
She actually cares about whether her students are understanding the course material. She will frequently stop during lecture and ask if any students have questions or if she needs to explain anything again. Overall amazing prof.
Elyse was one of the best math profs I've ever had. She describes the material very thoroughly and really tries to help everyone comprehend the material. Always very nice and easy to understand, lectures are essentially optional but very valuable nonetheless.
Elyse was a really engaging lecturer, she presented the material clearly and thoroughly, going over difficult parts multiple times to ensure we all understood. She was very encouraging and took lots of questions and explained the answers in great detail. Highly recommend her although beware the course itself is quite difficult
super clear lectures, tries her best to help everyone understand the material, makes sure that everyone understands before moving forward, also really caring and passionate about teaching
She's honestly so sweet, whenever people ask questions she answers them as thoroughly as possible and thanks them for asking afterwards. The course itself is very difficult but that's not her fault at all
Probably the best MATH 102 prof out there. 6 of my friends decided to moved to her section after one visit. The course itself is heavy and difficult, but Elyse's clarity and caring attitude make it far more bearable. She appreciates every question no matter how stupid you may feel they are, and she has a good sense of humour too.
Math 102 is very hard, it has a heavy course work load and tests and exams are extremely hard. Elyse, though, made it much easier. She was caring and allowed us to go back when confused. Overall a very effective teacher. This course is rough, but if you find the right prof like Elyse its a little better.
She's a little too smart so she expects everyone else to be on the same page as her which happens... never. The course can be understood on your own if you're willing to put in the work.
Great prof but it doesn't really matter for 102. All the exams are cross sectional and she does a great job of doing tons of examples but looking back, the lectures are a waste of time for 102. You'll pretty much be self learning in this course and relying on the webworks for understanding. Amazing and sweet in lectures but quite rude on piazza.
She's really caring and all, but wow the exams are HARD!!! oh and OSH literally killed me.
Awesome prof. Her lectures were clear and concise and she teaches us the basic tools we need for the exam.
Amazing Prof! I would HIGHLY recommend registering for her section if you can. Her lectures are intriguing, easy to follow and really helps you understand the concepts. Attend all her lectures, take careful notes of her powerpoint slides (really helpful) and you should be golden.
Great Prof! Math 102 is a hard course and Elyse does her best to prepare you for it. Don't skip class unless you know for sure that you understand the material, as she offers some short cuts sometimes. She also really cares about your learning and stays after class for a bit to answer quick questions.
Dr Yeager was by far my favourite professor during my first semester. I've always disliked math, but her lectures were so great, that I began to enjoy it. She teaches very thoroughly and makes sure everybody understands before going on. The midterm and final were difficult, but if you pay attention, you will definitely do well! Highly recommend her
She was really sweet, and always asks if anyone has questions before moving on. If someone asks questions, she always thanks them afterwards, even if it had already been asked several times. Math102 is a difficult course, and the exams were extremely difficult. Always do your best on OSH, Webworks, and quizzes because you're going to need the marks
She was a great professor and put a lot of effort into teaching the course. She goes at a fairly fast pace, but stops to ensure that students are understanding.
Best math prof Ive ever met. Definitely would like to take more math classes with her. Shes very inspirational and patience and always here to answer our questions.
She is very nice. She has very clear slides and give detailed examples in class. However, she teaches too fast, and sometimes it is hard to follow in her class. A very passionate lecturer, but reading the notes online is needed if you cannot follow in her class.
Elyse is kind, humorous, and a great lecturer. Our class was overflowing with students from other sections. She moves so quickly, the only way you'll be able to keep up is to bring her slides to class and fill them out.
Elyse was a very knowledgeable prof and her lecture presentations were very neat and organized. I did well in the course because of her clear and concise notes. Also, the in-class activities were very helpful. Just make sure to keep up with the WebWork. OSH was a bit difficult but fun way to make new friends through mutual struggle.
She is very nice and caring to students in lecture and is very helpful when answering questions. She's also very funny and has very organized lectures that helped me review for exams. Some students forget to do the short pre-lecture readings in the textbook before lecture and feel totally confused so make sure to do the readings!
She's my favorite teacher.
Elyse Yeager is a really lovely person who understands her subject very well. However one major issue I have with this class is that there is SO much mandatory homework. Be prepared for 30-50 book exercises and 10-16 webworks questions per week. I understand she is trying to help us succeed however university is about self driven learning...
Linear algebra was a living nightmare until I started Prof. Yeager's class. Her lectures are very clear and easy to follow, and she explains all concepts very clearly. She cares a lot about her students and it shows during her lectures. Overall a challenging course, but it would have been 100000x worse without her.
Elyse is definitely one of the best math profs that are out there. However she just goes through lecture material so so so fast. It also makes it tougher since she doesn't make the notes she makes in lectures available afterwards. But overall she makes things pretty clear and is a good explainer (as far as math profs go).
OSH was the most difficult part
She's very good at speaking clearly, answering questions, and going at just the right pace. She uses an iPad and Apple pencil to show her work on her powerpoints so you can fully understand what's going on. If you miss a class, she posts her lectures online. Generally a very pleasant and well composed prof.
Elyse is a real gem. Although OSH is not a vibe she really is. She has made math my favourite uni class to go to and I love how simplified she goes. Elyse is awesome - take her class.
Dr. Yeager was the best prof I had this semester. She was extremely well prepared for lectures and she taught the course very clearly. She always took the time to work through example problems in class, and whenever a student asked a question she would thank them and say its always better to ask than to wonder. Would highly recommend!
She genuinely made me hate calculus, and it used to be one of my fav subjects in high school. Although she does uploads her powerpoints, but they're filled with useless slides and require actually going to class to understand. In class, she goes over them super quickly and only does extremely easy examples which don't help us AT ALL for the OSHs.
I really wish she cared more about the variety amongst her students. Assumes that everyone is amazing at math and fails to explain the topics well... I was good at math and I failed this class because I was never taught the material well:(
Highly recommend taking MATH 105 with her. Her lectures are amazing, she goes slow and gives time to do practice questions. She is really helpful during office hours too.
Uses lectures to go over the hardest extra questions possible for the extra achievers who didn't understand, leaving you to learn the content on your own. You may as well buy the textbook if you just want the knowledge.
Prof. Yeager seems like a really nice lady. However, "lectures" were spent only answering questions that students have from assignments. I posted my questions many times and she never answered them, so I stopped showing up as I got nothing out of the lecture. If you are taking math 102 be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING.
The math 102 teaching team decided that they would not do synchronous lectures this semester and that was very difficult to deal with. I think Dr. Yeager is a good professor but the horrible decisions of the teaching team made her seem much less capable than she is.
She gives clear and concise explanations of concepts in lecture videos and during class. In addition, she is patient when answering student questions. Also, she has given helpful study tips (eg: having an annotated calendar). Definitely one of best Math profs that I've ever had. :))
Elyse is one of the best math profs I've ever had. She explains how to solve each problem clearly and is very calm even when she has to answer so many students' questions. MATH102 was very hard for me overall, but I don't blame her.
The teaching team seemed much more committed to keeping a low average than helping their students. The team including Dr. Yeager did not do regular lectures, but instead would rotate around having one professor do some prerecorded videos each week. It felt like teaching this class was the last thing they wanted to do. Basically doing WeBWORK alone.
I found Dr. Yeager to be a really great and effective prof because her explanations were clear and she never over complicated a problem. However, the course was quite difficult as the webwork exams and midterms were too short to allow you to properly apply your knowledge to the questions. Making it hard to be successful in the course.
MATH102 is hard enough, but the teaching team and the way they handled teaching online was much worse. The recorded lectures made my different professors varied greatly in quality, but at least Elyse's were on the better end. Her lectures were more like office hours, but the problem solving as a class was better than doing it all alone.
She's a solid prof :)
Dr. Yeager is probably the most caring prof I've had this term. Classes were in workshop style where you watch pre recorded videos before lecture then come to class for questions. She was so so patient with every question, and always had a smile and the most relaxing voice ever! In this class you'll never feel too intimidated to ask questions :)
Elyse is a very caring prof! Math 102 is a course many first years struggle with, especially this year with online math tests. However, Elyse is extremely patient with the students and never gets annoyed even when multiple people ask the exact same question in class. She explains difficult questions in an easy way for us to understand.
Dr. Yeager is a very sweet prof, and she has the most calming, soothing voice ever. She explains difficult questions well, and is super patient when answering questions, even if they were answered already in class. I wish I got to experience Dr. Yeager's teaching lectures as this year had pre recorded lessons from multiple profs instead
Really great at explaining math concepts! Also very kind and overall seems like a lovely person
I hate math with a passion but she is such a good prof that it makes me hate math a little less. If you also hate math but must take it as a first-year requirement, try to sign up for Elyse's section!! Your life will be happier because she explains math concepts concisely. Honestly a real gem to first-year math courses.
Attendance was important because this class wasn't recorded - it was formatted like a workshop (she works through problems instead of teaching new content). She's very patient with her questions and makes sure that her students don't feel that there is a "dumb question". She's one of the only reasons I liked this course, she's a real gem!
Elyse is the kindest person, but her midterms are absolutely awful. It doesn't matter how much you prepare, there's a 50/50 chance you'll know what you're doing. Math 102 has made me hate math. I can't wait to be done with this class.
Dr. Yeager is a very sweet lady and overall solid professor, but I really did not enjoy her class. She speeds through difficult lecture material, never covers administrative details, and spends too much time on the easy content. I also feel as though she does not try to make a genuine connection with students and is hard to access outside class.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS IN THE LATE AFTERNOON. I have noticed my friends in her 10am classes say she gives good explanations, but I did not feel the same way in her 4pm class -- I think she gets tired. Your grade is mostly the two midterms and the final. Homework is not graded for credit.
Warning: do not take this class unless absolutely necessary. I was looking forward to having her as my prof based on the reviews on this website. HOWEVER, she speeds fast through content and is very unaccommodating. I swear when she lets the students do the question first alone before showing how it is done she is staring into my soul. Pray for me!
She is one of the best math profs out there. Lectures were recorded in 2021W, so attendance was not mandatory. Online textbook was given by profs for free, and lecture slides were available in Canvas. Overall a bit hard course for first years, but Dr. Yeager is a gem with her patience and engaging lecture. If only she had other math lectures too.
She is the best math prof you can ever have. Course content needs to be studied on but it feels really easy with her lectures. 10/10 would take again.
Elyse is super caring! She's very attentive and aware of where her students are in their understanding. If it seems like the class is kinda confused, she actually cares and will slow down and do a few more practice problems. Only downside is your mark is pretty much just the midterms and final. Homework hardly counts for anything :/
Elyse is a caring prof who can tend to speed through content, but is more than happy to reexplain a concept if asked a question so make sure to advocate for your learning! I struggled with the course due to a poor foundation in calculus from online school (due to COVID) but Elyse is definitely one of the best UBC math profs I've come across.
Hands down the best math instructor I have ever had. She explains everything so clearly and is a real gem of a human.
I hate the way that Math102 is structured, from the content to the grade distribution. The problem-solving approach is interesting but they do not provide the necessary calculus base in my opinion. However, Yeager is an amazing lecturer and puts a lot of effort into making her students understand the content. If you take 102 take it with her.
I HATED this class - the exams are brutal, waaay harder than the homework and with very little time to do them (coming from a person who aced math and calc in HS). However prof Yeager is such a sweet lady, and will take the time to reexplain things when asked if students are having a hard time understanding. if you have to take it, take it with her
a nice prof and fair grader. explains concepts thoroughly and is kind to students. hosts office hours and is accessible via email. Answers emails really fast. Math is not one of my strong subjects but i managed to get a B in her class as she is a good grader. Webwork assignments were not for marks and are really helpful for midterms and exams.
she explained the content extremely well during lectures and answered everyones questions no matter how many there were. super patient, clear voice and seems really nice. the tests were definitely harder than the homework but they did give a lot of part marks
Solid prof with slower paced lectures and gives a good amount of time to work on problems in class. Some may find lecture speed too slow, and lose interest quite quickly, but I found the pacing to be quite good for me. Webwork material should be your main source for studying for midterms, but do keep in mind the textbook for supplementation.
best prof ever and so patient. clear explanations and prepares you well for the midterms, though the course in general will be tough if you don't have high school calculus under your belt so beware. there is a textbook but I used it once and never touched it again
Elyse's voice is so soothing and makes it so the content isn't overwhelming. The midterms and finals are difficult, and you have to do well on them to do well in the class, but if you know the material then they should be fairly reasonable.
She was the best prof I had in my first year of university. Very easy to understand and is extremely patient.
Elyse Yeager is possibly one of the best math teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. When explaining a math problem, she does so in the most concise, easy-to-follow manner. She often makes clear the different ways a particular problem can be solved. With Prof Yeager, math never seems impossible at all!
She is genuinely one of the best teachers in UBC right now. Her lectures are really nice (you usually don't need to study if you attend her lectures). I would definitely recommend her to anyone taking MATH105 or MATH103.
Elyse was a good math teacher. She can seem uncaring at times, but she is the best math teacher at UBC for first year. She is very blunt but her teaching style is very clear.
Elyse was good at teaching but not engaging in the slightest. She had no personal connection with the students, and her midterms were extremely difficult.
I just suck at math. Pretty good prof, don't take the course if you aren't super good at maths.
Was terrified going into this class with a bad mark from math 100 but Elyse was easily one of the best profs Ive had. her lectures were engaging and easy to follow along with and I found that I barely needed to study for the final with her noted and slides. She is blunt but very caring and makes sure to answer any and all questions.
Elyse is the course coordinator of MATH105. She is nice and caring as well. This year, students will get 50% free marks for this course (webwork homework, webwork quiz, and 2 take-home midterms). The final is brutal, however, I can still get an A without finishing the last 2 long questions (Because of partial marks???). Overall, she is good.
Great professor but slightly overrated. Very kind and caring. The course design is horrible though.
Her lectures were informative and easy to follow. Lectures were sometimes boring from lack of interaction, but the lectures get the job done (they teach you well). Course made so that it's easy to get 50%, but how well you do after that depends on final; but her exams were always reasonable, so getting a decent mark is probable.
I write this very late but I did not appreciate her when I had her. She is so organized and she actually tries to make her students not only understand the concepts but apply it to relevant topics that are helpful later in the course. Math hit me hard in uni but overall the average person would do very well with her as their prof.
Elyse Yeager, my beloved. The only professor that could ever get me to care about math. She does clear and concise explanations of materials, has good slide organization, and is attentive to student's questions about materials. The tests are substantially more difficult than webwork assignments, but that's on me for not preparing enough.
Yeager is a fantastic lecturer who made MATH102 extremely easy to follow. There is not a lot of mandatory work outside of class, besides weekly quizzes, but the exams are quite hard.
Great lectures with many examples, clear explanations, and fair exams.
Elyse is extremely kind and an amazing professor. She explains difficult concepts clearly and thoroughly. She is always happy to answer any questions and values student participation (not for marks, but you can just tell she likes when students are engaged). She records all her lectures which is an absolute godsend if you have 8 am lectures.
She is a great prof and always willing to help. She is extremely patient during office hours and cares about her students. The lectures were 2 hours long which sometimes felt like a stretch, but she gave breaks and practice problems during the lectures.
Elyse was the only reason I attended the 8am lectures. She's very nice and her lectures are very clear. The only complaints I have are about the the way the course itself is and not about Elyse. She's very helpful and patient during office hours even when I feel like I'm asking stupid questions.
She's a good professor. Explains every step in the question in a very detailed way. MATH 220 is pretty hard imo, and her explanations made the course more understandable. However, I think she goes a bit too fast at times.
Very kind professor. She explains concepts in an enjoyable way that is easy to understand, even for someone who is learning for the first time. Always open to questions, even if they are dumb questions. She records her lectures on panopto which SAVED me during the week while I was sick. Hands down deserve the 5/5.
I really enjoyed her lectures, she takes her time and explains all the concepts very precisely. She is also very responsive and helpful on piazza. 10/10 would recommend.
One of my favourite instructors ever. She`s considerate, strikingly good at explaining difficult concepts in ways that make you smart, and has a soothing voice that makes listening to her lectures an absolute pleasure.
MATH100 and MATH101 are an absolute mess. Terrible courses with no redeeming qualities, except professor Yeager. She is the most amazing prof, her lectures are clear (if not a bit slow) and helpful. If you have to take 100 level math, take it with professor Yeager.
The perfect package for a math prof: smart (obviously), caring, understanding, delivers good lectures, has a soothing voice, knows how to effectively communicate complicated ideas. Such a gem!
MATH 100 and 101 are both horrible, awful, hellish courses but Professor Yeager is so kind and amazing. Her lectures make it easy to understand concepts and her slides are really helpful to look back on. While the course itself is structured to make you struggle, Professor Yeager really does make it a little less awful.
Super clear. Easy to understand. All lectures are recorded so you don't have to attend lectures! She helps a lot on Piazza. She even wrote the CLP-2 Textbook which we end up using.
Professor Yeager is overall a great person. Her passion in Graph Theory easily ignites your interest even if you have had no prior background in the topic. Her lectures are very in depth and done with passion, she is reachable outside of class and gives detailed feedback. If given the opportunity, would take any course taught by her.
The professor is amazing in her lectures. She takes care to prepare in-depth slides that can be easily reviewed. All classes are recorded, and I recommend going to office hours if you have questions about written assignments. It's a lot of work, but it's doable. I highly recommend this professor if you're doing 100C.
def one of the best math profs. she has great lecture slides, is so nice and caring, and explains things well. will answer all in-class questions with respect and detail. wrote the textbook which helped a lot. math 100 is just a hell of a course but she makes learning it bearable :) if you have to take math 100C, take her 100%
she was an amazing math professor! she's super caring and genuinely wants her students to do well. most of her lectures were relatively easy to follow, that being said i did take calc in high school. overall the class wasn't as bad as i imagined. if you need to take math 100c, try to get into one of her sections!
I understand the logic of her materials, but it was totally not helpful for exam.I got this grade all studied by myself.
I was technically in Dr. Wetton's class, but after a few weeks, I started attending Dr. Yeager's lectures. She is an amazing professor, with very clear examples and explanations. She is very passionate and truly cares about her students' understanding of the material. Her notes/slides are fantastic for studying.
Great prof, lectures are easy to understand
Lots are covered in lectures so don't miss them. Also includes parts of Calc 2 and 3 (taylor series and multivariable calculus). Took calculus in high school and it helped immensely. As long as you keep up with course material (plenty of questions in supplemental textbooks) you will be fine.
Very sweet prof with simple, clear examples. However, the difficulty of the material taught in class does not match the webwork or the tests, which is a little unfortunate.
Very kind professor who answers every question clearly. Her lectures are very straightforward and easy to understand. The difficulty comes from the course itself, not the professor. I found that keeping on top of my work, coupled with her amazing lectures, allowed me to be successful in this course.
Honestly... I wasn't even her student. But she posted her lectures for 100C and you best believe I skipped Brian's lectures to watch hers. You can actually understand math with her. Do yourself a favour and switch in her class if you want to be less miserable in Math 100.
Elyse is very sweet and explains things very well (when you ask her directly), but I find her lectures to be too fast. Most of my notes are incomplete from the lectures and I just have to reteach it to myself. Lectures also don't really help much on webworks or small class assignments. Most material you'll have to teach yourself, go to office hrs.
Yeager is great. Her materials are easy to understand as long as you study for it. I took her MATH 100 and came back for 101. It is just a problem with the Math Department to have such low class average, not her problem
Yeager is a great professor - her lectures are clear and easy to follow. The material can be challenging, but keeping up with the work and using resources like unstuck ai for study prep can help you succeed in this class.
Dr. Yeager is an amazing professor who is clearly passionate about both teaching and graph theory. She is very easy to reach and always answers questions quickly on the class Piazza. Despite MATH 443 being an honours course, our midterm was fair. Dr. Yeager even told us about one of the questions ahead of time.
