Best Math teacher I've ever had. Flunked it all in high school and learned it all in one semester with him. Come to class willing to learn and practice at home and you'll get by just fine. GREAT TEACHER!!
I would definitely not take this professor again. The course is supposed to be easy and for non-math majors, but he made it extremely difficult and the only way to pass is if you do well on the tests. If you're not good at math this guy will fail you.
Alfar is a wonderful teacher. He's very helpful and also introduces new topics with precision and clarity. If you review your notes and practice the problems shown in class, you should be able to score high on his tests. He designs the tests for people to pass.
UGH... HIM AND HIS GESTURES..... SYTHAX OR WHATVER HE ALWAYS SAYS... HE GETS A NAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FROM ME!!!!!!
He is really very nice professor. He clears everything. He is really helpful. Just concentrate in the class, and read your notes at home. You will get highest score in test. If you don't understand, please ask him. He is happy if you ask him questions. He is always smily. That's my garantee, you'll
Great teacher if you really pay attention and do your work.
Prof Alfar is phenomenally efficient. Each statement he makes seems to come from a deep understanding and he seems to really care if students understand. He does move fairly quickly but is always asking if students have questions. Contrary to previous reviews, his voice is very clear and comprehensible. How some cannot understand him is beyond me.
HE A THE BEST
avoid if you can, No mercy, My sister had a birth and she had no others help beside me in this country, because I'm new immigrant. So he failed me because I missed one test and that in the summer time. Explain very quick. Teadious and boring. I'm very good at math and I got no passing grade with him so try to take this calss with some one else.
First off, he speaks english perfectly fine, with barely any accent. He's more clear, precise and straight to the point than most other professors (providing you pay attention and do the homework). He is a very organized and keeps track of everything without problems. Overall, I'm happy to have had him as a professor, and I recommend him to anyone!
He's a great professor! There's no required homework, 4 tests, and hes extremely nice & very helpful. And you can understand him perfectly fine! Just show up & pay attention. Easy A!
its not a really hard class but if you dont go to class you can get really lost. you need the text book cuz you get alot of hw from it. he is a good teacher he will try to help you as much as he can but when it comes down to the test hes really hard grading them but he helps you out a bit with the final. overall not a bad prof
Extremely hard to understand his teaching, the topics went too fast
he is a good prof. his test are not so bad, if you study hard. he gives partial credit.
He's a good teacher. But he does not give quizzes or extra credits. What you got on your tests, that's what u gonna get. So he won't have no problem to fail you.
Go to class, listen to him, study well for tests [which are a bit challenging] and you can do great. H.W is optional, but trust me, you will not do good if you miss the H.W. I slacked off at the beginning and so I got only a B+... so if you are going for the A, work hard from the beginning! And, he also drops the lowest grade too :)
Excellent instructor, breaks problems down with precision and expertise. I have no problem with this. What I do have a problem with, however, is A. His "no bathroom use" policy, and furthermore, his citing that this policy is actually in the student manual.(which it's not) Treats his students like prisoners/babies.
Like many, I work full time. Had to leave early for a mandatory work conflict, respectfully told Prof. Alfar ahead of time. Told me to "stay home' as opposed to leaving the class 15 minutes early, as this would "cause a disruption". Give me a break. His "no leaving the classroom" is Nazi-Germany like, and quite unecessary, as this promotes ill will
If you are looking for a good grade . Definitely not take him. He assigns few hw and his tests are way off Defferent from the hw. He takes points off even if you don't shade a graph. He teaches sometimes In his own way. If you take him you probably will have to re take the class.
Seriously if you want to take a calculus course and get an easy A then don't take his class. DO NOT assume the homework he assigns is anything close to what his exams are like. Simply DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE, he doesn't care about students passing.
If you go to class, pay attention, and ask questions when you're confused he's a great professor! Don't expect to slack off - you have to work hard to do well in his class but you'll walk away with a deeper understanding of math. He truly cares whether students understand him. He moves quickly but the course has a lot of material! Study & do hw.
Great professor, you have to work hard for an A but it is definitely doable. He really does care whether you understand what he is saying. I would recommend him but like I said you have to do your work and study!
Amazing professor, the class goes at a pretty quick pace but if you keep up and pay attention you'll do fine. He really makes sure that you understand the material and if you're stuck or get lost ask questions. He will go back and give you a step by step on how he got the answer. I've always been terrible at math but this class I got an A.
GOOD PROFESSOR. WILL ANSWER ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS. HE WILL NOT MOVE ON UNTIL EVERYONE IS ON THE SAME PAGE. SO PAY ATTENTION AND ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS YOU NEED. HE IS VERY HELPFUL.
The last time I took this class, I failed. My first and only F of my ENTIRE education. Though his cell hone policy is extremely rigid (twice caught and you're dropped) it helps you focus on the material. I recieved high 90's all semester. No surprises. All the explaination you could ask for. Very nice man who wants you to succeed.
He is a good teacher. Tests are tough and he grades them harshly.
One of my favorite professor at ncc. I took MAT 111 during the summer and honestly I didn't attend some classes well b/c I over slept but as long as you write down EVERYTHING he writes and take just a day or two to do all the problems he went over and the homework you will most likely get an A. Highly recommend!I also took Alfar for MAT122(honors).
Professor Emad, is very nice and always answers your question. A very polite professor who cares for his student. If your not good at math he will definetly make you understand by the end of each class . Recommend him to everyone and I didn't spend a dime on txtbook . It's at the library where I just took pictures of the hw prob/answers to study.
Prof Alfar is genuine and cares about his students. I am not strong in math but he did a great job with answering all my questions and helping me understand and I understood his lectures very well. He is not someone I would consider easy, but definitely a great teacher. His tests very similar to example questions in lectures
No what i expected
Very patient professor. Extremely kind. Attendance is not mandatory, but be aware that you have to come to class to pass. Does not grade hw, but goes over it if anyone has questions. He also reviews for the final.
While his speech is pretty well, the comprehension of his lessons can be a bit difficult. If you decide to take this class be prepared to: Do the homework, ask questions if you're not sure of anything, study study study(can't stress that enough) and pay full attention. He blows through the lessons pretty quick, and there's no review for the test...
tough grader, very hard to understand, must self teach f you want to pass. Not a bad guy but hard quizzes and hard to comprehend make this class hard.
Good teacher, hard material and lessons will go quick. Very strict cell phone policy, he did drop one person in my class because his phone was out over two times. Tests are tough and sometimes even studying the homework aren't enough to get by, you must go the extra mile in this class, if you are ready to take the course don't take it lightly
3 tests (drops lowest grade) and 1 final. If anyone was unsure about something he would always go back to explain further which was helpful. Reviewed for the final for a week so everyone was prepared. Doesn't care if you skip class, thats on you. The only downside is hes VERY strict w cell phones so don't take them out!!
He is the best math teacher i have had in awhile. Everything he teaches is so clear. If you have a question he will definitely explain until you feel comfortable with the material. Do the Homework because they are a great review. If you study for the test you will d well- it is easy. You should definitely take him- math teachers don't get better!
ok professor. He answers all your questions but the test are extremely hard and is a harsh grader, one little thing can make your answer wrong, and he said he wasn't going to put a tough question on the final because we didnt learn too much about it and he put it on the exam! many of the kids knew they failed because of that question
Lecture is amazing but when it comes to his tests they are extremely hard. He tests on lots of material which is a lot to process at once
I took him for pre calculus , he teaches very quick it's easy during class but the test is way to hard hard . U have to study 12 sections and remember every formula . The test is written exam and u have to show work . Don't take out your phone . His sweet and he will answer all your question . Do the homework to help you study for your test .
DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE! He will call you out on it, even if it is sitting on your desk, and tell you to see him after class. He accent is something to work around. He grades tough and you would definitely need to be teaching yourself most of the work outside the classroom!
Great guy, great Professor. Even though i took him over the summer and only had him for a month, he will remain has one of my favorite Proffesors from ncc. He gave me a strong foundation for calc in his interactive discussion-style lectures. His tests can be challenging but if you need to go further in math, you better get used to a challenge.
good professor but he is a tough grader. He likes to put those hard questions on the test that you don't think will be on there. participation not required. He is always willing to help you answer every question you have! He gives you every opportunity to do well as he does care for his students.
He picks the hardest possible questions for tests and no matter how hard u study u will never get 100. He looks for points to take off and is not lenient at all. He's a very nice and helpful guy but when it comes to passing his class he makes it as hard as he can.
test questions are nothing like homework or what we do in class. very difficult. doesn't stop to review just moves onto next topic. not for me
One of the best math professors I've had in a long time. Love math? This class is for you. Hate math? This class is also for you - he teaches things in ways that everybody can understand. Just make sure you do your homework and study before exams, and you should be fine.
I don't know if I can or can't reccomend him. He doesn't care about attendance or if you did the homework and will answer questions. Which sounds great. The issues come in with his grading policy, tests only. That's awful for bad test takers. To add to that he's very tough on grading them. If you are a bad test taker, do not take.
He goes over topics very fast but makes sure nothing is left unexplained: he repeats many of the previous topics while teaching the newer ones. Assignments are NOT mandatory. Only five exams. Exams are easy if you practice a little. Do the homework and redo the math done in class to get an A. Grades critically, no extra credit.
Very good professor, goes over all of the work thoroughly and will even stop progress if only one student doesn't understand the material. Graded purely on tests but the tests are similar questions to your homework, and he will give you extra credit for attempting a problem regardless if its correct. Very nice man and well respected, 10/10 take him
Terrible, attendance doesnt matter he only grades you by 4 tests. If you are not a good test taker your screwed. I had to withdraw from the course as well as 20 other kids in my class did. Do not take this Professor
Youre entire GPA is based off of 3 exams that are difficult. Since there is only 3 exams for an entire semester of material, there is way to much information packed into each. By the end of the semester, there was only 10 kids who hadnt dropped the class, and four including me had to drop it the day before the final. Do not take his class EVER!
He gives 3 exams and drops the lowest grade, and a final exam. He grades you based on the exams ONLY!!!! He gives homework but does not grade it or participation. Do and review the homework he gives and trust me you will do amazing! He explains everything in full depth and you can tell he really cares about helping students. Amazing teacher!
Great Professor!! If you put in the time and effort to study everything he teaches ( Classwork/homework) you should get an A!!! He was very dedicated and never moved on unless everyone understood the topic!!! Would definitely recommend!!!
Professor Alfar does not play. At all. But you will be completely better off for it. If you can step up the plate and really push yourself, he will help you bring out your best. In all honesty, I really can't thank him enough. If you're serious about learning, Professor Alfar is the guy you want to be taught by.
Only test grades count toward your grade in the class. Very hard test a of course material to memorize.
Professor Alfar is one of the best Math professor at Nassau. He ensure that you understand the material and he walk you through the procedures. I give this man a 100% all the way.
Please dont take it !!!... He takes points from little mistakes like he was born knowing all of it. He is monotonous and test are nothing like the homework. He wont help you to improve in the next test. I feel like someone stole my money. Just stay away from his classes.
Professor Alfar is a great math teacher. I took his pre-calc class for the summer and he is highly organized and has a way of teaching that makes it very easy to understand the material. This is because he really makes sure you understand the fundamentals. I will be taking one of his classes again and recommend you to do the same.
Let me clear things up a bit. All the positive comments with five stars are obviously bots and this is a terrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS BY ANY MEANS. SAVE YOURSELF IF YOU VALUE YOUR ACADEMIC FUTURE. This is the worst teacher on the planet. Dont know why he still has his job. Makes no sense
No extra credit, no make up exams, no quizzes, no homework grade to boost up gpa. Based primarily on exam scores. Exams are based on topics that are reviewed once from weeks ago. Its hard to study as material is labeled by chapter section etc. He is not accommodating by any means. Doesnt care if you were on your death bed. It is what it is -_-
Dont take this class by any means. Youd learn more from an English teacher in this subject than you ever would with him. The student basically teaches themselves. Any answer you give is wrong. The exams are harder than the actual examples used in class. Straight up bad teacher. Makes any aspiring mathematician hate math Very discouraging teacher
examples he gives in class are way easier than questions on the exams only gives 4 exams the semester and doent review at all, doesnt even give partial credit for minor errors on exam one error in a problem a zero for whole problem.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! hes a very tough grader and bases your grade based off of 4 tests. Taking this class with him will drop your GPA. Its not worth it to be honest. He doesnt review for tests or even help you get better for future exams. He doesnt grade homework. Taking this class will not help you.
Prof Alfar is very clear and organized. From day one he says that he grades solely on exams! He isn't for everyone but I personally LOVED his class, the hw is just like the tests. He is an excellent teacher and genuinely cares about students actually learning. I go to a diff college now and I STILL miss his class a lot! Be vocal and ask questions!
Took for precalc in the summer. I have mixed feelings about the class. I do indeed think he is a good teacher because he will make sure you understand the material well. However it is a bit hard to get good grades in his class as he is a very tough grader. My class went from 29 people to about 13 after two test. You really need to study to pass.
Prof Alfar was an excellent calculus professor. He gives really helpful refreshers for algebraic skills that can be easily forgotten if you haven't needed to use them in a while.Just speak up if you don't get something and he'll walk you through it.There are only 4 tests and those are the only grades but he gives you everything you need to pass them
Emad instructed my summer pre-calc class. In general, the class is dense for the semester being four weeks. Emad is intuitive and doesn't rush anyone's lack of understanding. The class is comprised of tests, but he takes the pressure off as he informs you on what will be on the test (No Surprises)
he made it very clear that theres only 4 exam grades. homework isnt graded but it's very important you do it and ask questions, exams are very similar to hw questions. overall, he is very nice and gave refreshers to class when needed & answered any questions!
Knows how to teach. His notes are great. But careless during exams because he expects you to memorize lots of formulas and if you missed the exam day there are no makeups even if it was a medical emergency. And his exams are much tougher than the HWs and classwork. Doesn't grade HW so it will affect your gpa.
This professor runs things differently. I personally didn't mind it, but some students may not like his methods. As a professor, this guy is patient, allows lateness, works with you and keeps it a buck. His grading is indeed based off exams only, but if you pay attention and have some discipline to study, you should be good. I have no complaints.
I have no bad comment, he was a great teacher and made sure you understood the material he would pause to make sure you were on board right then in there while he was giving out the lecture and I really appreciated that since I always have tons of questions. Make sure you don't skip a day because you will be lost otherwise.Thank you Professor Emad.
Only test grades count toward your grade in the class. Very hard test a of course material to memorize he lets you use a piece of paper but he add more problems into the exams
Professor Alfar takes the time to answer all questions and make sure students understand the material. He is patient and kind!
Professor Alfar was by far one of the BEST professors I've had. You can tell he loves what he does. He's organized and if you're lost.. he will find a way to teach to you specifically. Homework is not mandatory, however, I HIGHLY recommend doing it. it makes the difference between a pass and a fail. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS!
Four exams in the class. Those are the only assignments that count for the class. He assigned homework but does not grade it. If you are not a good test taker this is not the professor for you.
I don't know why this guy has a higher rate when he uses only four exams and his exam questions are much difficult than the problems he goes through in class. Just one mistake on the exam whole thing is wrong and no makeups even if it was an emergency. Lots of formulas to memorize which are easy to forget and no reference sheet. Should be fired.
Very good professor. He just grades exams but they are not too hard. Also, you are allowed to use a paper sheet with any information for the exams. He doesn't rush with the topics and he will answer all your questions.
Graded with 4 tests. Test questions are generally harder than review questions in class so try to do the harder hw questions to be safe. He's fair with partial credit but will take points off if u don't show all work. Hw is optional, don't have to do them. Not a big fan of graded by only 4 test, very risky.
Very kind and understanding man Tests were very very very difficult
Nice guy overall but do not take his class grades on 4 test and goes very quick also does not allow for you to use any type of reference even though all test are short answer makes it almost impossible to pass especially for a summer class never seen someone this test heavy at any institution
Teaches the material to you in lecture; you wont have to teach it to yourself at home. "Discussion" type classroom. High attention to detail, has respect for using and teaching proper math language. Treats it as if its your first time seeing the material. Happy to give refreshers of prereq material. A real educator, this guy knows how to teach.
In my opinion it's extremely up to the student whether they pass or not when it comes to this professor! He will constantly reteach and re- explain if you ask him to! Don't be afraid to ask questions!
Great professor!!! He really loves to teach and cares about his students!!! He prepares you to be successful in his class!
Amazing professor! Everything that is on the test was discussed in class. He reviews the exercises before the test day to clear up any doubts. He also explains what will be covered in each question on the test and does similar exercises for each question. All the questions are short answers and you need to show the work.
terrible professor
Genuinely the best math professor I have ever had. I took pre calc in high school and got a C-, But he made calc so understandable I got a B+. He makes complex material so simple. Do the homework, and be present in class.
He is amazing, makes sure that his students understand before he continues. Very patient and sooooo nice. If you dont understand something he will explain it to you until you do. Practices problems and goes over hw in class if you have difficulties, waits to make sure everyone is done taking notes then erases the board. Such a wonderful professor!
I have no idea why this professor has a high rating. Well for his teaching style and giving out instructions and going over things sure that's reasonable, but his exams tougher than the things he goes over in class and hw and he doesn't let you make up an exam even in any emergency when there is only 4 tests and no graded hw. This guy is some joke.
This professor was great i honestly rate him an 8. He takes his time with the lectures, and makes sure you understand it before moving on. He's funny and cool. At first, I didn't like how it was mandatory that he made us put our phones away for every class however, i understand it now because it helps focus and forces you to understand the work.
Great Prof, very nice and helpful. Really won't move on until everyone understands the material. Thank God he makes us put phones away otherwise I'd be more lost. Class goes very fast with him. Your 3 test grades make up your final grade and you're allowed to have a Ref. sheet for exams what's better than that? Take him if you can.
Alfar is an amazing professor. Your grade is based on four exams, which seems scary at first, but he tells you the format of the questions before the exam, so it's really not that bad. The questions on the exams are similar to the ones done in class and homework (which is optional), so overall, as long as you do practice questions, you'll be fine.
He's is a nice and good professor and is very knowledgeable on the subject. He has an extremely advanced vocabulary and talks very interestingly. He has a very strict device policy. ABSOLUTELY NO PHONES OR DEVICES (unless you have accommodations). And he only grades tests, nothing else! So don't take his class if you're a bad test taker!
He teaches extremely fast and writes fast. He grades solely on 3 exams. No extra credit, doesn't grade homework, doesn't give participation points, he grades JUST based on how you do on the exams, that's it. He doesn't try to work things out and tells people to withdraw. Almost half of the class I was in was gone by the end of the semester. RUN!!!!
