Class isn't mandatory but you won't do well if you skip class. Prof. Collar is a really nice guy and the workload is average. The class is easy for some and hard for others. Personally I found his class to be really fun and informational and feel that I learned a lot! I really recommend this class, but make sure you're willing to work!
Great Professor, love the way the teacher teaches the class.
Pay attention to detail. he likes when you go see him during office hours. Put in the time and you'll get a good grade. the extra mile counts.
Best Class Ever
Challenging class, but allowed to work in teams which is essential to doing well in the class.
Good teacher, made class more interesting than just a normal powerpoint and take notes kind of class.
COBOL is not easy, you can't miss a class or try to BS it
This guy is way annoying makes work way harder than it needs to be. Tests are easy never studied never needed to. Says he is there for office hours but if you go he's probably not there. Three tests and two super easy assignments. I need this for a prereq and am worried because I learned nothing
Dr. Collar is nice but his teaching style is not for everyone. The class was not based on powerpoints which was nice but he would often go on to talk about "real world examples" which were nice but often leapt off topic and were no longer relevent. The course work is low and the two assignments were not from the book. There were tests from the book
If you're a MIS major and think this class will be a breeze think again... I'm a MIS major and it was far from a breeze. Big homework assignments each week. YOU NEED THE TEXTBOOK! Dr. Collar knows what he's talking about and knows how to teach it. He puts you guys in teams to work together. You learn by doing it! I deff enjoyed the class though
Very unusual but very effective teaching style. No powerpoints in this class, he gives you an assigment and you go to work without necessarily knowing exactly what you're doing. He'll help you, but he expects you to work through it for yourself. Very nice, the material definitely sticks wit you.
COBOL I. This class forces you to learn the language without the professor holding your hand. You get all of the class time to work on homework. Do not expect this to be an easy 'A'. A good portion of students dropped out because they did not put the effort in. Very educational class. One of my favorite at WCSU
This class definitely requires A LOT of work, however, if you attend class, work with your group, and ask questions you will learn a lot and really enjoy the class. The class is a lab setting and you work on the homework for the majority of the class, no long lectures and powerpoints. HIGHLY recommend this class to all MIS majors.
He teaches by having students work in groups. He doesn't lecture with ppt slides. Gives an assignment; and lets the groups work on it in class; and they have til the beginning of the next class to finish it. He is strict in regards to having a hard-copy and sending everything in an e-mail (especially with file naming)
This course is challenging, but very helpful. It is treated as a real business environment. You are given all the assignments at the beginning of the semester and one assignment is due each week. The assignments are worked on in class with group members. It is not an easy course, but you get help along the way through your classmates.
Great teaching format- all group work except for midterm and final. It makes a mandatory class fun. Very little lecturing.
The class is based off of group assignments, effort HAS to be done. You cannot walk into this class thinking it is an easy A, you have to work for it. If you are struggling, ASK FOR HELP ASAP do not wait until the last minute. The midterm and final are take homes and you have a week to do them. Collar is willing to work with you.
This class was very hands on. It was nice not having to read through a bunch of theory and then struggle to apply it. Learning the material as we were using it was the best way to ensure the material stuck.
You need to be in every class. There is an assignment every week and you will NOT pass if you skip. You're put into groups of 4-5 people and you have to work on the coding together. Professor Collar doesn't lecture, in fact he prefers the hands on approach which works a lot better. 1110 WOULD WRITE RECCOMENDATION TO PRINT-REC.
This class requires that you constantly stay on task. An fool can program if they only read the chapters. READ THE CHAPTERS. WELL WORTH IT. If you do the weekly material, the midterm and final will be a piece of cake.
This class prepares you for the business world. You work with a team the entire semester (not for midterm or final) and you learn through collaboration. It is not for a slacker you have to work. You do the work and you get an A if you don't you will fail.
If you come to every class, do all your homework, and pay attention, you'll done fine. If you miss classes here and there, don't pay attention, and don't do the work, you won't.
His teaching style really helps to make the material clear. If you work hard, his class will be a lot of fun and will make learning the material that much easier. While the beginning of the semester seems a little overwhelming, by the time a few weeks go by you will be amazed by just how much you have learned.
Great teacher, emphasizes that you have to come to class. If you miss class in the beginning you in trouble. Read the chapters, and participate with your group.
Well you don't really have a choice he's the only one. The approach let's you learn on your own which as westconn students we know is way better than sitting through hours of slides.
It's very important that you go to every class, especially in the beginning, or you're screwed. One of the most difficult classes I have taken, but Professor Collar teaches it well. He wants you to succeed! The only other advise I can give you is choose your group members wisely - you'll need cohesion between everyone, much like the real world.
Goes off topic some times but is an interesting guy.
Knowledgeable in his subjects, but very pretentious and can come off rude a lot of the time. Grades fairly, but tests are difficult. Lectures are not boring, and you learn a lot.
Makes up stories from time to time. But overall is a good guy #paleo!
His lectures are extremely boring and the tests are not easy by any means. He is one of the most condescending professors I've ever had, and treats his students as if they're at a job rather than at school to learn. He thinks he knows how to do everything and is a gift to the world, not one of my top choices for a professor
His lectures are a combination from the book and random facts relating to life. Some of it was useful some wasn't. He is some what condescending towards the class and will speak to you as though you know nothing. His tests from the book are so randomly made and hard you need to know a ton of details. The Powerpoint and Word assignments were easy.
Great way of teaching, relates it to the real world, as opposed to reading right off slideshows. As long as you are willing to work hard and keep up with the course material, no reason why you should not do well in his class.
Good professor, teaches differently but very effectively. Very few professors teach like him.
He applies real experience and is very knowledgeable. He also incorporates feedback with the students
Great professor, always willing to help out students as long as you are willing to put in the work.
Collar is a great professor, he'll motivate you o want to learn the materials. Attendance matters if you want to receive a good grade.
Really good teacher. His class has definitely opened my eyes as far as changing this to my major. Extremely helpful information and excellent teaching methods.
he's a straight forward guy. do the work and you will pass.
He is a good person, however all his tests and homework are repeated every semester. He does not change up his curriculum at all. So if you fail it once, make sure to save what you did the prior semester. He tends to act like he knows what the problem is and plays it off like he does, but tells you that you need to figure it out on your own.
rude personality ,acts like he knows everything , if you take this class, you gotta do the work, its a lot, put in the time but he kinda treats you like you're stupid. Intresting class tho.
Do not miss the first class (you will fail)!!!!! The way he teaches the class is awesome! He assign everyone in class into a team and work through the assignment together! Great professor and he knows his stuff!!!
Professor Collar conducts his class based on group work. He's fair, clear and wants you to succeed. Assuming you show up to class every week and work with your partners to get the projects done, you can get an A. Make sure you show up first class as well to get all of the important info. Great professor!
Go to the first class or else! Skipping classes is not an option. There are group projects every week but they are very interesting and it is great.
Be sure to not miss the first few classes, its essential for passing. His way of teaching the class assures you an understanding of the course! Asks questions if you don't understand, this is the best class I have taken due to the fact the teaching style is helpful and makes it easy for a students to understand the concept since it's hands on
Great Professor! I had a couple of CS classes and This has topped any other programming course I have had.
Good teacher
Professor Collar is very nice and makes class fun. There is a lot of reading, but its not to bad because he out what is important to understand in class. Makes lectures fun and gets students to engage. Recommend taking this class with him you will not regret it.
Great Professor would gladly take another course with this him. Dont Skip the class A) because you won't pass B) you'll miss out on some great stories. Covers most material in class but always give out a review before each exam that covers everything you need to know. Has a project that helps you create a "work in progress" of resume.
Professor Collar is a great teacher in the way he teaches and the assignments he gives. Going into this class as a Freshman I thought it would be hard, which it was, but his teaching style and energy keeps the class active and alert, from switching topics to completely getting off task in a strategic way.
Condescending, but tries to be funny! Thinks he knows everything.
Professor Collar is a good very good instructor. He takes time to make sure you understand the concept of what he is teaching. Enjoyed his class.
ENGAGING SPEAKER, PROGRESSIVE APPROACH, IS HELPFUL WHEN NEEDED
its up to you to learn
Needed this class in order to graduate. I would highly recommend Collar to future students. Be prepared to study and have homework but the info he teaches you is really useful. Would take him again if I could.
Very much like his teaching style, his lectures are interesting and not boring. He is very informative and knowledgeable about the topic. Don't miss any classes.
Professor Collar is a great guy with an amazing teaching style. His tests are fair, plus he gives a review sheet to students to prepare for the exams. Don't mistake his attitude as ego, he truly cares about his students and provides real-world feedback.
This is the best class I have taken at westconn, Professor Collar really cares about his students education. His assignments are targeted to help you after college, everything he covers in class relevant and interesting. The class consists of a couple small tests and two big assignments (one word and one Excel).
Hottest teacher i've ever had. Great Teacher, makes you laugh and realizes the material is dry and long but tries to make it as interesting as possible. Avoids powerpoints and connects relevant topics. Has a resume builder project that helps you in the future. Get the MIS book but not the microsoft book you don't use it.
He is smart and has a lot of experience within the Information Systems subject. Homework is a weekly thing but as long as you buy AND READ the book you'll do just fine. Great teacher despite unusual teaching style.
Really learned a lot in this class, and he made it so his students are interested. never read intill i had to know material for the exams. you learn a lot, however he likes to intimidate students and almost make you feel stupid. Awesome if you go to him for extra help though and actually considerate. I would take him again.
Great professor. Progressive teaching style. Its refreshing to have a professor who doesn't lecture you to death.
Dr. Collar has high standards but is always available to help out. On his projects such as the resume project, he demands perfection (because you need it to get a job) but he has large availability and gives a long time to perfect it.
Great professor, tough but fair grader. Do things on time, pay attention, and study a bit. You will do fine and learn a lot not just for the class.
he cool.
You basically teach yourself, and Collar is there if you need help. Very difficult but he is nice.
Cool guy. Class is group based with not much lecture. You end up teaching yourself the majority of the lessons with the help of your group. Is always available during office hours to clarify any issues.
Very different teaching format. he talks for about 10 minutes then you do the homework. you are assigned to a group the whole semester. Homework every week, two tests.
Class is lab style, brief talk at the beginning, then split up into groups and work for the rest of class on homework. Pretty difficult class, most work I've had yet, but you really feel like you learn something because you are forced to learn on your own as you do the work. Fair grader, but lots of work. Not for the faint of heart.
Tough class, make sure you read the book considering this is a programming course. Prof. was very knowledgeable and can answer most questions. Also, don't miss a class.
Very helpful. A Lot of time consuming homework that is a must in order to take the midterm and final.
Class that really makes you work for a good grade. Be prepared to work in a group for the whole semester and really have to think about certain things when learning Cobol. Very interesting class to take but super important never to miss a class or else you will be behind by a lot. Do not miss the first class because it is the most important!
You don't have a choice if you plan to take his class but he's alright. His style of teaching was different but it was a better way for me to pick up a programming language not being a CS or MIS major. Be prepared to work.
Great Professor!! Would take his class again!
Great professor with a great way of teaching the material. He was very interactive with the class and asked us many questions on what we thought of what we were learning. There were two projects and some extra credit. Take advantage of the extra credit and make sure you see him during office hours for the projects. Very helpful, great semester.
There are three class exams: two are worth 60% and the lowest is worth 10%. There are two in class assignments: MS word assignment easy and MS Excel assignment was hard, only because I never used excel before. Two lab exams: pretty easy. He gives you a study guide for all exams. No homework!! No cumulative final. overall fair professor.
Emilio Collar Jr is extremely knowledgeable in the subject of this MIS 280 course! The first day of class you have a heavy workload. The hardest thing to deal with is the way he "teaches" aka he tells you to read the book. He sits at his computer while you and your team reads the confusing text and will not help you (only gives hints). AVOID
Show up, do all your work, and pass with a B
I enjoyed this class.
Very knowledgeable.
As long as you come to class, do your work, and follow directions, you will get an A. Simple enough
He is a great professor and does not give a lot of work. There are a few assignments throughout the semester and tests. I do not like how the assignments we get require so much work yet impact your grade so little, yet tests impact your grade a lot. The exams are pretty tough but durable if you study.
Professor Collar is a great professor who actually cares if you learn the material or not. He tries to make the work not seem so boring by adding jokes and personal stories in his lectures. The tests are some what challenging, but if you show up to class and pay attention you will be fine. He will also curve grades up if need be.
A great teacher to have when you're a freshman. Really gets into all the nooks and crannies of the course and helps you get the fullest understanding of the material you will learn.
just show up in class and you'll be fine. i enjoy his stories :D
he is mad chill and will help you out if your grades are low
He is up front with how he teaches the class. Very fair and helps his student pass. Offers extra help in office hours, which he can be flexible. Show up to class and do your homework and you will be fine.
Very nice professor, tries to make dull topics funny. Make sure to study for tests lots of things to know but will help you in the long run.
Good lectures but sometimes off topic. Assignments not too difficult with plenty of time to complete them. Overall 7 out of 10
You need to read the textbook because it is the only way to learn in this class. He just talks a ton about himself and all the luxuries he has. Also, I was scared to ask for help because of the way he talked to other students with questions, like they are a lesser person than him.
Everything is always very clear with plenty of time to do everything that will be graded on. There's also review for the classes and lectures aren't boring.
I thought the course was good, but I wasn't always clear as to what his points were. He expected a lot, and overall I enjoyed having class with him.
Take him you will actually learn how to code, was a CS major switched to MIS he actually knows the proper way to teach the subject. You work to find the answers to the problems given instead of just being told the answer and memorizing it. Wish he could teach other languages like Java or HTML . Forces you to think if you want to pass.
Great class. Completing the assignments is much better than lecturing every week. There are multiple ways to complete the material. Effective, efficient. Great to talk to. You will get placed in a group that takes care of you if you struggle with the material. A few reminders: Arrive before class start time, and do all assignments - Best for exams.
Dr. Collar is great professor. He knows his stuff well. The good thing he forms teams of three to four people which helps to do the homework because one can do it by him/her self.
If all professors were like Collar, this world would be a much better place. You truly learn in his class. Be disciplined and you will pass with a good grade.
Collar is a great instructor. He does his best to keep up with you but also knows how to push you to reach higher progress. Homework and tests are graded fairly, and if you read the book and pay attention, the work come naturally.
It's fairly hard and the way he teachers, it's impossible to pass this class without the textbook. you HAVE to read the book in order to complete any of your assignments.
Read the book, do a little research when you're stuck, and you'll be fine.
You will do most of the teaching yourself, he claims it's a hands on way to learn like you would in the real world but then doesn't teach you at all. The textbook is more of a teacher and you'll have to figure it out on your own. If you can't then you're screwed cause he's not gonna show you how to do it, he'll just give hints while he does nothing
The biggest takeaway from this class is to make sure you work with your group to get all your homework assignments complete. The professor doesn't teach and requires you to read the book and learn from your classmates. His grading is inconsistent. My group and I hand in the same work and will get different grades. Practice and you will do well.
Overall a great class, I learned a lot. Definitely recommend taking Cobol with Professor Collar.
His style of teaching is very different from normal classes, you work in groups on the homework for each week making the class much easier to learn. Punctuality is a must, he keeps to his deadlines even if you are a minute late and do everything exactly to his specifications which are not very hard.
Homework prepares you for the midterm and final exam.
Professor Collar is a nice guy who wants his students to do well, but at the same time learn. His grading was fair, and he goes through the matterly in a way to everyone understands it. I recommened taking him.
Extremely nice guy, long lectures that can veer off topic only grades a handful of assignments throughout the semester.
Be prepared to work hard and turn your assignments in on time.
He runs a good class. Lectures are done nicely with a big emphasis on participation. However, the Excel and Word lab were a very youre on your own type of thing. Know these programs or make friends with someone that. Every test is given a study guide. If you study them, you will have no problem. Also, he always curves up.
all the HW is done in groups, so work with your team and do ALL the homeworks and dont skip any. The midterm and finals are 80% of your grade, but are based on the HWs, so if you complete the HWs properly, you will be prepared. He is also available outside of class if you need to ask a question or have are having problems. overall good class.
interesting personality. not the greatest lecturer. he often goes off on tangents about unrelated topics. when you ask him a question, sometimes he will just tell you go see the tutors. He will often bring politics into every lecture. you must review for all tests or you will not pass. does not grade many things.
You learn pretty much everything independently through the textbook. He rarely ever lectures in class which only happens after you make mistakes on your work. You do get to work in groups though which makes the class more manageable. As long as you keep up every week, you will do very well on the midterm and the final.
Professor Collar started off interesting. He cracks jokes and has us interested in the topics we discuss. That is it though. We taught ourselves everything and when we asked for help, he always refers to the tutors. Though he does have the highest rating on this site for WCSU, he is very conceited about it. He makes it known to everyone. Good luck!
He is a very good teacher; he does not give powerpoints and it is a plus that he is very handsome. Sometimes I would come to class just so he can make me feel better due to his humor and handsomeness. He is not only a good teacher, but he's good on the eyes, too. 100% recommend.
He is very open to help and wants to see the student succeed.
Good teacher I really enjoyed the class. Just he wasn't as accessible outside of class as he said he was going to be.
Not too much work outside of class. Having lectures that are more relatable is somewhat helpful, but becomes a little confusing when trying to figure out which information is needed for the future and not.
Great Lectures, Good at teaching content, funny guy.
I thought the course was interesting and the instructor made it fun.
Just need to pay attention and take detailed notes to pass the exams that are graded heave
This professor wants every student to succeed, however some of the ways he approaches the class makes it discouraging and difficult
Funny guy, just needs to work on the personality.
Easy class as long as you do the work and go to office hours for projects. Fun professor but can get off topic. Tests are multiple choice but difficult, study!
He's a pretty cool guy. Goes off topic A LOT and doesn't really like to repeat himself. He gives hard projects but you learn from them.
Beware that the test material is easy if you know anything slightly about computers, especially word and excel. If you are completely computer illiterate than you will struggle because he goes off book often.
Gives a lot of extra credit but is a very hard grader. Very unorthodox teaching method that doesn't cater to students needs
This is not a show up and pass class, you have to write code, but the professor makes the class worthwhile and puts the effort in to ensure you understand what is going on in the class. You need to read the book a lot if you don't know how to code.
Great professor. Great teaching style. A lot of work to do but you learn a lot. Do not skip the first class.
Nice professor. Gives lots of work, you will be teaching yourselves in your groups. Don't sign up if you're looking for an easy class.
He is a very good professor, and teachers the language and not the logic. Its mandatory to attend the first couple of weeks to learn the logic. Beside that he is a good professor and give help when ever needed. P.S. Mrs. Collar, ur lucky
Related material to life, gets on rants a little bit. Book not needed for work just studying
Attend every class. Make sure you get a good group. If you miss more than 2 classes, then drop. The more you do the work, the more you understand. You will need the book. Do not wait until the last minute until you do the work. MidTerm and Final are 40% each of final grade. Not an easy A, but doable.
My favorite teacher so far, go to class and you will pass
He LOVES what he does. He's a really good professor. Definitely not an easy A but not the hardest class ever. He's probably the best option for this course.
Good teaching style, makes class interesting
Very engaging and interesting in his teaching style. Projects were well defined and he was very helpful. Knowledgeable about the subject matter and made the class very enjoyable. I would highly recommend this class and this professor.
Easy A, you will have no problem in this class.
Very interesting and different type of professor, but it works well.
Best teacher to take MIS 260 with. He is lenient and understands that this isn't the only class in our schedules. Go to class and you will pass.
He is very helpful outside of class. He makes stuff easier to understand.
Well informed and knowledgeable professor who lectures based on real life applications. Helpful out of class with projects and caring for all of his students- however very opinionated about certain subjects
Emilio is one of THE best professors you can take at WCSU. He is very knowledgable in his field of study and is passionate about his teaching. He is one of the few professors that actually cares about the feedback from his students about his teaching method. He tries to make each and every class as interactive as possible. TLDR: Great professor!
good lecture, gives you the tools to pass the class. Make sure to have some form of the book. and study for the few tests.
Gives good advice. Wants students to be successful.
makes long night classes more enjoyable. no homework except for notes. tests are pretty easy as long as you just study the vocab in the book and pay attention in class, nice guy
The Microsoft Office and Excel projects might have been very difficult had he not given us plenty of class time to work on them. Also you can go up and get his feedback to achieve a perfect score at anytime. Great Professor. (Very attractive)
Dr. Collar is definitely passionate and knowledgeable about his field. Like others have said, he teaches the language, it's up to you to learn the logic. He is very fair with his grading and takes student feedback into consideration. It it a bit of a tough course, but if you work hard, he will put his efforts towards you.
Dr. Collar is intimidating at first, but his intentions are well. He is one of the actual Professors who genuinely cares about his students.
He is there for help when you need it and he is very helpful when it comes to answering questions and helping with homework when stuck
Show up to every class. Gives extra credit opportunities. Definitely need the textbook for this course. He cares about your grade and wants you to do everything possible to pass.
Professor Collar wants his students to do well. A lot of work, but great professor
A lot of figuring things out by yourself and as a group.
Tough class stay on top of homework for midterm and final
Professor Collar knows his stuff! He is very passionate at what he teaches and also teaches in a way no other professor does. I have heard a lot of comments regarding the teaching structure in other departments ( computer science) that isn't the proper way to teach. Professor Collar doesn't do powerpoints unlike CS professors. Hats off to him!
Dr. Collar is a great professor. He really makes you think and work hard for your grades, but you will learn a lot and he makes it fun. He is always in his office and is more than willing to help his students. He also curves generously and adds the extra points to the total (say, 27/40 and a 8 point curve, he would boost you to a 35/40).
Absolutely amazing professor. He really cares about his students and cares about everyone doing good. I would recommend his class to anyone and look forward to taking another class with him.
This class is not easy, but if you put in the work you will pass. Professor Collar is very knowledgeable about what he teaches and is available for assistance. It will help to get tutoring if need be. This class is not traditional, but he makes a challenging concept easier to understand.
Professor Collar is a very knowledgeable guy who knows his stuff when it comes to COBOL. YOU WILL NEED THE TEXTBOOK. If you miss one or two classes, you will get behind. However, Professor Collar wants you to pass his class, he hates giving bad grades. You also won't pass if you don't communicate with your group regularly. HW can be done in class.
Dr. Collar has a very unstructured approach to teaching the course, you can succeed if you are a good student and work well on your own and with your team. But if you do better with lectures, then this class will be a struggle.
Hands on work. No powerpoints. Find a good group to work with it. Self learning.
Totally great educator. He truly thinks about his students and wants everybody to do great. I would recommend his class to anybody and anticipate taking another class with him.
He is a great professor to take. The class is extremely group heavy. If you do not utilize the group or resources around you, it is going to be a bad time. I did not do this and I fell down to this. You will need a lot of time to devote to this class and to sit down and do the homework.
Class is fairly tough and very independent. You are put in groups of 4. But the learning is primarily on you and your group, and definitely not from the professor
A great professor who knows about the reality of business and provides you what you need to pass
While handsome, Professor Collar demonstrated a lack of structure as the semester went on. I respect him as a person, however when it comes to teaching, he does not have the best teaching style and as a result, his students suffer heavily. Overall, Cobol is easy, which is the only saving grace of this class.
Professor Collar is very knowledgeable in COBOL. He teaches as if you're working in a business environment, so you will be working mostly with your team. It is also very important to not miss the first couple of classes. The textbook is required, you will not be able to get through the class with no book.
Instead of teaching COBOL using theory like other professors who teach coding, Professor Collar teaches the class like a lab where you work on the assignments and actually learn the code.
Very Attractive
Professor Collar is a great teacher that teaches the course right. He interacts with students clearly and effectively. He makes students ready for tests and loves to do his job. This is a great teacher to have.
the boy
LOVE HIM(: QT
Great teacher and knowledgeable professor
Take the class!
Great professor
Makes material interesting. Do the work and you'll get a good grade.
textbook required. the work you put in is the result you will get out of this class.
He's a very helpful professor, he is understandable and is willing to help his students. I would recommend people to take this class.
Great professor. Actually makes sure that students understand the material. Would recommend this class.
He is a great professor, I would definitely take another course with him. Make sure to attend the classes. Go to his office hours with the projects and you get get an A because he works with you and helps you a lot.
I would 100% recommend taking class with him. Very knowledgeable about the subject and passionate about teaching. Always willing to help in or out of class.
If theres one thing you do in your college career, take a course with Professor Collar. Hes fair, cares about his students and the content hes teaching, and prepares you for exams with a detailed study guide. You will learn important real life things in just the first class than in years of classes. best part, your hw is the read the chapters!
Great professor. Covers everything in detail, not just the course material but also refers to it to real life scenarios. Really wants students to succeed and gives as much advice as possible for life. Highly recommended.
Professor was enthusiastic about the topic, answered any questions asked and wanted his students to succeed.
great professor, makes class fun. read before class
I liked the professor.
He's a nice professor, and very professional.
very knowledgeable of topics and related back to real life examples
Great class
Group homework assignments weekly, if you're familiar with programming it should be pretty easy. If not, the textbook will be helpful with the assignments but you'll have to put some effort in. Professor is great, he will not spoonfeed you answers so be prepared.
He taught a refreshing learning style that promotes actual understanding of material and not just short term memorization. While it is necessary to put in effort for this course, it was extremely rewarding and I found that I had developed a mastery of the course by the end. Overall a caring and funny professor that wants his students to succeed.
Honestly, this was one of the hardest class I've ever taken. Dr. Collar is a funny guy, but he doesn't really teach and it is hard to learn on our own even though, we're put into groups of 4 for the entire semester and only a few students know how to code. If you are an MIS major, you have to take this class (NMW) and if you are not, STAY AWAY!
He is a great professor but his teaching style is very different from others. If you can get used to it and do everything on time do not let him scare you away. The class is hard but you can pass it if you are willing to work for it.
Collar is a great professor that is different than the ordinary lecture heavy professor. He stays away from powerpoint slides as his entire class is based on doing work in groups and interacting with other people in your assigned group. Overall, one of the funnest classes I have taken because I'd rather work in groups than be bored in lectures.
Collar is very passionate about COBOL. He believes that every student has a chance of passing but he's going to make you work for it. But that's okay when the quality of his teaching is so high.
A real pleasure to have as a teacher!
The most condescending professor I have ever met. Speaks as if he is the only reason you won't be living on the street after university. He speaks about irrelevant topics during the lectures and will regularly remind you that he is providing mind-blowing knowledge that you will hear nowhere else, despite it actually being mostly common knowledge.
Offers a lot of office hours and outside of class reach but really veers off topic during lecture. Very uninformative and leaves information incomplete. I.e. you leave lecture with more questions than questions than you started with.
Professor Collar is a great professor. He interacts with all of his students and always does his best. He curves tests to benefit the students. He will always go the extra mile to help the students. He always tries to make the best of the topic even if it is boring. Great guy and would absolutely take this class again.
Prepare to learn a lot of helpful tips to use in the real world.
Good lectures, keeps students engaged. Provides study guides for each test that have everything that will be included on the test.
The professor has a great energy and really cares about his students. He is always available to help students and is willing to come to campus outside of his office hours for meetings. Even if the class is hard, he is willing to help as much as he can, and successfully makes the class interesting for students who aren't too into the subject matter.
Great Professor! Easy A if you do all the work and do good on test. Very funny and will teach you so many life lessons.
Very good, exams are difficult. Loves to tell personal stories but most are funny or interesting to hear. No power points which is good
He'll give you good feedback he wont tell you what you want to hear
He's a good professor who gives quality information about life after college, the projects are a little difficult but you're given enough time to do it and he helps you out a lot on them. The lectures become a little boring sometimes but overall the class isn't bad at all.
Good guy. Always willing to meet outside of class to help you finish projects. Only negative is that he can be condescending at times. But overall hes a good guy and means well.
Very great professor, clear with assignments and has very laid back lectures. Always there for you outside of class.
Collar made this class the best it could possibly be. He cares about his students passing and will do a lot to help you out. Also is very knowledgeable on not only the course content, but will give you a lot of life tips along the way. Take him if you take this class.
Really nice guy and he likes to talk. You 100% need your textbook for this class. His teaching style is very different. It's kind of a teach yourself kind of class, I learned more in the tutoring center. All round great guy though.
You will need to use the resources available to do well and have to set time to focus on the material
This class is not easy. Make sure you get the textbook for this class or you will be lost and if you forgot it somewhere he'll give you the chance to get. Decent guy with decent grading. Class is mainly group focused so make sure you pair up with people competent. i hate coding so ill probably never take another again but this is by far the best
He's a good prof despite the content being quite dull. Very helpful outside of class. Gives good advice and you tell tell he cares.
You will not learn anything in class. You must learn everything on your own or in your group. I hope you can read people well when you first meet them because you are going to need to find the smart people with programming experience and stick with them. Good luck.
He is the best professor I have had yet. He is very caring and hilarious at times. He is one who cares about his students and is a professor I would select to have again.
One of the best teachers iv'e had at this school. Definitely would recommend to take his class. The material you use in the class is real and will help in the real world!
This professor is the kind of person you wish taught all the subjects but that's just impossible. The most caring person, accessible at anytime, walk you through assignments just to make sure you succeed. Thank you Professor. You simply are one of the best at Westconn.
He should be the one in charge on the computer science department. He may look intimidating, but he teaches you a lot. You work as groups, which ease the homework difficulty. Homeworks are difficult at first, but they help you prepare for the exams. You must read the book in order to understand the assignments. His class was better than cs intro.
Professor Collar is one of the best professor at WCSU! He is very caring and always there when you need help. He goes above and behind to make sure that you understand the subject. I wish I had him for all my classes. WCSU needs more professors like him!! It is very easy to pass the class , just show up , participate and do your work.
There are times when he thinks he's delivering groundbreaking information but it's actually common knowledge that most people already know. The class other than that is pretty good.
This professor is just too good.
Very good teacher. I really enjoyed the class and was able to understand everything that was being taught.
Professor Collar is honestly such a great man and a professor. He was super passionate about the course and really cared about his students. He made sure that all of his students didn't fall behind and always made time to help them. I would love to take another class with him if he teaches another class. 10/10 one of the best professors!
Extremely knowledgeable teacher, really knows about the topics he discusses. He's able to connect outside things with class topics and this makes it engaging. Overall great teacher, highly recommend
Easy to understand and quick to further elaborate if asked
Prof. Collar is open to questions, does his best to make sure you understand whats going on. He's laid back, doesn't hesitate to crack jokes and have fun. Amazing teacher
Great Class, never assigns homework unless it is for the 2 main projects. Class grades rely on projects and tests heavily, but he gives you all the the resources necessary to be able to pass if you are willing to work with him.
He makes learning the material easy and fun.
He knows what he's talking about. He's clear and concise but he also is organized in his thoughts when it comes to the subject matter. He's easy to talk to and is open to questions. He creates a fun and inclusive learning environment even though we were online only. Looking forward to taking him again for more MIS courses.
its a hard class but good teacher
Not for those with thin skin--particularly with the Word project, he can be brutal with criticism, but he's a fantastic professor aside from that. Knows what he's doing and understanding with regard to extenuating circumstances. I had him for online class this semester, and his exams have been open-book thus far. Class is challenging, but not bad.
The professor comes well prepared for each lecture. Its a fun class to take and besides going off-topic once in a while, he's a great professor and I would highly recommend him :)
Dr Collar is an extremely knowledgeable professor and has a true deep understanding of the subject he is teaching. He doesn't just read off a powerpoint slide, but instead knows what hes teaching. He has a great teaching personality, and keeps his students engaged at all times. He also tries to be available for students as much as possible.
The teacher is good but you are going to get a lot of project their not to hard, he curves his grading up instead of down like some-other professor. He tend to go off topic sometime but eventually he come back to the topic at hand. Overall I had a good experience with this professor.
I highly recommend taking a course with Professor Collar, he does a great job at putting the information presented in class through to you by real life examples. Although, you have to be at class to learn he makes it interesting and entertaining.
Great professor, connects class's to things that are happening in the real world. He makes sure to make things understandable and makes it easy for students to participate with him.
He will not teach you a single thing. The grade is 80% between midterm and final. Got a 100 on the midterm, did bad on the final so my grade went from an A to a C. All he does is tell jokes during class and distract you. Textbook is needed because all he has you do is copy work from the textbook, and calls it your homework. Nice guy, badProfessor
He's a funny and witty professor, even though he makes you do most of the work, he is accessible and helps you work through your difficulties.
Dr Collar has a very different teaching style. The first couple weeks were the most stressful because I had NO idea what was up and he didn't explain a lot. But the real idea of it is that he steps back and lets you figure it out from the textbook and by experimenting and writing code. Your teammates are VITAL. He's really chill about grading tho!
All in all, this class wasn't as bad as I anticipated. I am not computer savvy and needed an elective to graduate, but I ended up actually enjoying this class. Dr. Collar makes it interesting to be in class and he is helpful when you need it. Other than the god awful Excel project, this class was enjoyable.
A great professor.
Professor went a little bit too much into detailed on topics, but really knew what he was taking about. He also has a great sense of humor. He will make you work harder when needed and help will help you if emailed .
Never will trick you in an exam or review or any project. Will have you relate to the topic; have a good time and might get a laugh or two from you. Will put in the time and help you as much as you need if you are willing to try. A very good role model and wants you to get the best of the course
Professor Collar is always willing to help out students. He will extend his hours at any time. Even though the material is not exciting, his lectures are always fun to attend.
Hard class. I recommend not taking unless it is a requirement. This class is very hard. Professor does not stay on topic.
Professor Collar is great, very responsive to any questions, he gives great feedback, and will explain the topic in great detail until you get it. The textbook is a must, prepare to read otherwise this course will be very confusing, worked a lot with a team which got a bit challenging in an online setting but awesome nonetheless. Good luck!
This class is HARD do not take unless it is mandatory
Stay away if possible. Not a good class.
bad class
Does not do a good job in explaining the material and assigned a lot of work. Do not recommend!
very hard class
This class can be very distracting as the professor does not speak much of cobol. He rambles. You have to teach yourself.
Professor Collar is straightforward of what is expected from you. No surprises. You will get out what you put in. He is always willing to work with you as long as you seek him out, he will make himself available for you. Very friendly and caring. Recommended.
I have taken many coding languages at WCSU, this is the hardest.
Great professor, amazing sense of humor. Kept the attention of the class for the semester. Gave us a few projects to complete plus a few exams. Studying is necessary to pass. Professor will meet with you for office hours if needed
Good Professor makes you earn your grade and you get out what you put in.
Collar does not do a good job in teaching the material. This class took more of my time than any of my other classes. I had to get extra help from the tutoring center.
He definitely wants you to do well. He's completely willing to curve exams if needed and will only ever curve up, never down. He is always working to keep the class interesting, and so he'll occasionally change subjects to something more fun yet still ties it back to the course material. His projects are also very helpful and not too difficult.
One on one is one the best professor's I have ever had attending WestConn. Extremely Knowledgeable with technology and how it has progressed. One of the only classes you can take and retain valuable information. If you have the chance to take a class taught by him i'd highly recommend.
So glad this class is finally over. This class was a major headache.
This is a programming class and anyone that has never worked with any programming language, I recommend making sure you are present in class. The groundwork is needed to do well in a programming class. The professor is great and is always available to help. He wants you to do well, but you also have to want to do well. Overall great class.
great guy. I would definitely take his class again
Does not help at all when needing assistance in a assignment. You are pretty much teaching yourself in this course. It's also very obvious that he does not know COBOL very well.
Very good. Loved the way he taught class
Great professor loved this class. The way he teaches is different from other professors and it is a good different. He also curves test scores up. He also helps you a lot in office hours.
Makes class entertaining and curves tests
Very kind professor who wants the students to succeed not only in class but also in life. Shares valuable experiences with the class for us to use, and provides ample class time and office hours for help with assignments. He will make you rethink your entire thought process on online safety and security.
Professor Collar was one of the best professors I've ever had. His class are very entertaining and you will be looking forward to attending them. He cares a lot about his students and gives amazing life lessons. I am sad that this class in ending, but I am very happy to end it with a lot of knowledge. I would highly recommend taking his class!!
This dude's class was atrocious. We had about 6 graded assignments/tests, and if you miss one you're up the creek. He requires a copy of your family member's obituary if you miss an assignment for a funeral.
If you are an MIS or Cyber Major you have to take as many classes as possible with emilio. He is the most difficult of all the professors but he is fair and he will prepare you like no other professor.
Professor Collar was definitely one of my favorites during spring 2022 semester. He usually went easy on us during classes. He tells stories to keep the class interested, and always has office hours. He ties the boring stuff into life experiences and he gets the class to interact. As long as you show up and meet him in office hours u will be fine!
Prof. collar is one of those male teachers that think they are above everyone else. His humor is bad, he talks A LOT & no early leave. All in all, he just isn't a good teacher, he's mean and he's accessible out of class but he makes you feel stupid when you ask for help. Like the classic "well you must be here for a reason" BECAUSE you can't teach.
COBOL with professor Collar was the most challenging course I took at WCSU. Since he did not explain the material I relied on the textbook the whole class.
Professor Collar was great. Little to no homework, he was funny, and he relates to the students a lot. Highly recommend taking MIS260 with him or any other class with him.
Hes a talker and will get off topic often
He is an amazing teacher. Collar understands the course and tries his hardest to make it simple for everyone to comprehend. Little to no hw but be sure you are taking notes during class and/or reading the textbook. If you need help, Collar is there for you :)
Great professor, makes lectures interesting, and very well informed in what he's teaching. If you decide to choose a professor for a class, make sure you choose professor collar!
Professor Collar has a unique style when it comes to his lectures. Most professors get into the habit of relying too heavily on lecture slide shows. Collar does not use slides, instead, he utilizes the whiteboard in class. His lectures are by far the most engaging I have ever had. He answers emails quickly and encourages students to succeed.
Literally the eziest way to pass this course is to get a good group of people around and make a google doc and with that write down all of the notes you take on this document. It is the best for studying and also if you're broke get someone to take a pic of the graphs and you don't even need to buy the book.
one of the hardest classes ive taken, the professor is a good guy but the workload is alot
Great professor!! we had homework weekly but it was easy when you had a great group. make sure you choose good team-mates and you are going to do great! put your work in and you will do okay! will def take him again!!
He was a good Professor. However, he sucks at responding to emails. I emailed him about 8 months ago and he just responded just now.
Prof. Collar won't babysit you through a project, but will definitely work and point you in the right direction if you need it. He always responded to emails within 24 hours. Classwork itself isn't too difficult if you focus and use the textbook. He truly cares about the well-being of his students.
The professor's lectures often digress into unrelated life stories. Homework is rare. Textbook usage in lectures seems unnecessary. Extensive test reviews, yet short multiple-choice tests, often curved. The professor imparts valuable life lessons but isn't prompt with email responses. With diligence, an 'A' is attainable.
He is cool.
Very easy to understand and great at teaching
He is great. This class seems complicated at first, but he makes sure the lectures are interesting, fun, and easy to understand. I loved listening to his stories.
He's very nice in and outside of the classroom during office hours, make sure you read the text book bc he doesn't talk about everything thats on the exams in class! He may go off topic with funny entertaining stories but thats on purpose to get students to pay attention!
Avoid he just talks about his personal life the entire time and expects you to know the material.
he is a really good professor. there are times where he seems tough but he is just treating you like an adult. overall his topics are interesting and if you just follow directions then you should be good. his tests aren't too bad just do some reading before and you should be good.
You need the textbook in order to pass the exams. His lecture isn't boring because he doesn't use power points, he teaches with real world examples and goes over the most important parts in each chapter. If you have experience in Excel and Word then the class will be easier for you. Attend every class and don't be on your phone.
Dr. Collar does an amazing job explaining concepts and keep the class engaged by making it relatable and providing real world examples of the topic. He is a generous grader and will curve exam grades when necessary. He may come off as a disciplinarian but show up to class, pay attention, and take notes and you'll never have any conflict.
Great guy, in terms of understanding. He goes off into funny stories mid lecture to keep students encouraged. It is clear he truly cares about what he is doing, and wants his students to succeed as well. Definitely take this professor if you are thinking about it.
Skip for 260 if you can. Un reachable via email and doesnt explain anything clearly, found my self putting more time into this then my 9-5...
The professor is very relaxed but follows thru on the homework assignments and makes sure coursework is completed to ensure that the subject matter is learned. Always open to questions and provides support to learn.
Great Professor, cares about what he does and wants you to succeed. Can find the pdfs of textbooks for MIS298 for free. Clear assignments and due dates. Wouldn't say an easy A, but if you apply yourself there's no reason not to get an A.
If this is your first time coding, this class will be a lot of work. It's fairly simple, and the textbook does a good job of explaining the concepts, but it takes a long time to actually do the HW. Pr. Collar was very laidback and accommodating. He wants you to succeed. You can either do the bare minimum or push yourself and still get a good grade.
Professor prefers that you have a USB thumb drive for class and presentations. Carry it on your key chain to look like a pro
Requires a USB and strong group participation for a semester-long project. Includes a midterm group presentation and final group submission (one per group). Attendance matters. Will help if asked but expects us to know things. Found myself watching youtube videos on how to work with Access most of time. Class isn't too hard, overall good professor.
No exams, just a group project. You must work with your team, there's no way around it. You'll have a presentation, so be sure you understand your part. Final project is due at the end. Easy class overall if you stay active and work with your team inside and outside of class.
This course was super fun, Professor is knowledgeable in coding and AI, and this course focuses on those aspects, coding and using AI to do so. When in recent years most professors have been angered by AI, this professor embraces the changes. be ready for code heavy classes, and group projects with minimal lectures. Exams are just code projects.
he is super nice and tries making class enjoyable and relates topics to things we would like. he moves kinda fast so you def have to stay on top of textbook notes but ik people that didn't and still passed easily. hes one of the best teachers for this course.
Gets too off topic, made it really hard to know what was important. If you are doing a project and need help, go to office hours they are helpful. Read the book, that is the only way I learned.
