Easiest class of my Freshman year. One major thing is that he has an accent, it is tough to understand but after a few classes, you can get the hang of it.
Had him for Discrete Mathematics, probably the hardest course I've taken at Fordham. Professor Zappa is an exceptional professor who is passionate about Math and cares that you do well in his course. It is more theoretical, but it will help build a strong foundation in math. I wish I studied more, but it was a real eye opener for me. (READ NOTES)
Great professor for a core class. He goes through everything as many times as it takes for people to understand it and asks the class for their opinions on how he can make the class better. Such a nice professor who will always have you at office hours if you need anything! Short homework every other week or so, two midterms, and a cumulative final
Zappa is fantastic. Always took time to check if students understood material, provided supplemental problems, and additional office hours. Very straightforward class. Showing up, paying attention and asking questions guarantees success. He will help you every step of the way.
Professor Zappa is really great!! He is super nice to students both inside and outside of class. His lectures are hard to understand at first due to his accent and handwriting, but when you get used to his accent, it will be great. He is a really good teacher, well-prepared for each lecture and sends his notes on Blackboard. Take his class! !
Prof. Zappa is super nice! He is very funny and available outside of the classroom. You can go to him whenever you have a question and he is very patient in explaining concepts that you don't understand. Definitely take his class and you will like him!!!
He is one of those professors that cares so much about his students! He is always available during office hours and is happy to explain topics to students again. I took him for business calc and he is definitely not the easiest of the teachers. He goes into more depth and does not allow calculators. However I enjoy math and found him to be great!
ITook his linear algebra class without prior knowledge in multi calc.; Not a good move. People who have taken multi. calc. 2 found Zappa's class to be very challenging. I had to invest about 10-15 hours a week, and more during midterms season. It's pretty proof heavy and abstract, so really be on top of your work. Going to tutoring is unavoidable.
Professor Zappa will probably be one of if not the hardest professor you'll have. If you don't stay on top of things, within a few lectures you're going to have long sessions of catch up. Even if you are on top of things, you MUST go to tutoring. The material is very theoretical, and his grading is unforgiving. But he really tries to help students.
What I love Zappa is he is always willing to help you no matter what. But you definitely need to show up to class and stay on top of your work. This class was demanding and theoretical (a lot of proofs and terms), but interesting at the same time. If you want to become a better mathematician, take Zappa.
He was awesome! I had taken something similar in high school so not having to go to class was amazing! Accent takes a little getting used to, but doesn't affect his teaching at all. Homework was really reasonable and quiz difficulty was on par with the assignments. Plenty of extra credit and retests. DON'T buy the textbook, he sends you a free PDF!
Professor Zappas class was great. He makes his expectations and grading criteria very clear, yet attendance is not mandatory. He is willing to help if you approach him and makes sure to go back and explain any misunderstood material. He makes an effort to make his class manageable and definitely takes note of what students do and dont understand.
Prof. Zappa is nice and really cares about your progress. I was sad that only a handful of people participated in the class because he is very smart and passionate about math. He always makes himself accessible. That being said the math class itself is pretty hard. I was good at calc in HS but for some reason didn't do wery well here.
Professor Zappa is a really nice guy who cares a lot about his students and wants to see them pass, but at least for an online course, the material is really difficult to comprehend. Even after reaching out for help I genuinely didn't have a clue on how to solve equations in this class. I'd probably avoid if Math isn't a strong subject.
Professor Zappa is by far my favorite Professor at Fordham. Just follow very straight forward instructions and you will get an A.
A nice guy who didn't have the best system for online teaching. He only had one 50 minute Zoom class a week instead of the scheduled three along with pre-recorded lectures. Non-math majors may have a hard time with the material, and it's obviously even more difficult through Zoom. He gave us two midterms, and the final counts for 40% of your grade.
Great dude, one of the best teachers I've ever had, if you can overcome the accent.
Zappa is a really caring person and is super passionate about the math. Not a lot of people participate in his class, but you can tell he still cares a lot regardless and is always available for help outside class. The material was pretty difficult but if you take notes, do the homework and participate in class, you should be fine.
Ask questions and he treats you well. No quizzes, only HW and tests. I could see my classmates test scores and they did bad even though the topics are mad easy. He gives lots of review, just do it and you'll do good. He is kinda bad at teaching cause he doesn't know if you don't know. So ASK him! If you don't pay attention then don't be surprised.
If you needed help with homework he would help you do it. If you needed help studying for a test he would give you problems and coach you through them. He was amazing and whenever I came to him after not doing so well on my exams, he would try and see where he could give me back points. That said, don't go to him just after exams, be consistent.
Really a great professor! No textbook, short homework once a week, and he is organized. Highly recommend having your camera on and staying engaged in class to get the benefits of his class. A lot of my classmates struggled because they didn't take class seriously. Responds quickly to emails and is always willing to help.
Zappa is nice, but his class is definitely challenging. Two midterms and a cumulative final. Definitely go to his office hours if you have questions (which you will) and use the lecture notes. No textbook mandatory but there's a Pearson homework software you have to buy. He also has a strong accent, but it's not too much of a hinderance
I really liked Professor Zappa. He is easy to reach and always willing to help students. He grades homework and gives 3 exams--2 midterms (20% each) & a final (40%). His class can be challenging at times but if you show up to class and reach out for help you'll be fine. I would recommend taking Zappa's class.
Dr. Zappa is great. He is extremely accessible with his office hours, so don't freak out if you do not understand the material at first. He is more than happy to review it with you. The homework and tests were both very straightforward and fair. The point is, if you listen, read his lecture notes, and ask for help if you need it, you will be good.
I'm not great at math but Dr. Zappa made things really clear. Definitely the best Finite professor at Fordham.
This man is a gem. He is my favorite professor at Fordham so far. This course is difficult because the content is hard, but Zappa is so understanding and has a great sense of humor. Take this man for the class, he is always available for extra help. I'm so happy I got to have him as a professor.
TAKE CLASS WITH THIS MAN! Professor Zappa is so caring and wants all of his students to succeed. He's always willing to help outside of class and doesn't assign much work. I absolutely recommend.
Discrete is a challenging course, and a bit overwhelming. However, Zappa is very invested in his lectures and making it as clear as possible. The homework can be hard, but he's super helpful during office hours. Very organized and reasonable man. His office hours are quite fun.
Zappa was an amazing professor and I would 100% recommend him. Finite Math was not easy, but all of his lessons were organized and helpful. If I did not understand something, I felt comfortable asking a question. During his lessons, he would stop to make sure we understood the material. Very accessible outside of class, I always went to office hrs
He makes math so easy. if math is not your forte, it will be when he teaches you. Minimal homework, easy exams, no textbook use, lots of practice, tests are literally just the problems he gives for review, will answer ALL qs, and just a really clear teacher with lessons that make the math super super easy to understand. also just a super nice guy
I am awful at math maybe thats why I had such a bad experience but he traumatized me. Have you ever had a professor dejectedly sigh while trying to teach you math? Somehow ended up not failing and I honestly think it's because he felt bad. He'll work with you outside of class but if you're terrible with math look elsewhere- if you're good take him.
Zappa's a goated professor. Fast-paced lectures, but he's willing to answer questions and is super understanding. Homework is weekly and can be difficult, so be sure to attend his office hours. Discrete math is tough (considering its heavy emphasis on proofs), but it is definitely rewarding.
Zappa is hands down a great professor. He is knowledgeable a helpful. His descriptions and examples are very clear which makes the course work easy to grasp. Two midterms, a final, six online home works, and four written home works made up the grade. One of the most spectacular math professors at Fordham. Absolutely take his class.
Professor Zappa is a understanding professor, he is kind enough to let you fix your worse grade to improve your class GPA. I did not do well in the class but THAT has nothing to do with him (my responsibility). Make sure to go to OFFICE HOURS! Also study really hard! Don't slack!!!! I recommend.
Take him! He iss available outside of class time, gave many opportunities for extra help/grade redemption, & his course load was manageable. He is willing to answer any question and present material in multiple ways if we don't understand something. The online homeworks are also helpful because they offer a step-by-step walk-through of problems.
Thick accent and sloppy hand writing, dropped him after two classes I could barely understand him or what he was writing. He is a good teacher though but math is not my area at all and his accent did not help. Moved fast but did help whenever someone had a questiom.
Zappa is my recitation professor for multi so I can't speak about the classes that he actually runs, but he is a really kind professor who wants his students to succeed. He also acts like a real person and is super understanding if you are struggling to understand a subject. He gets it. He's also funny and has a good personality.
Professor Zappa is an amazing professor. Math can be a daunting subject, so he breaks it down for you so you understand. He will not waste your time with math you may not need, and makes sure to heavily press math that can actually help you in life, like financial math. He is very easy to reach outside of classes.
Dr. Zappa is the GOAT. He is so nice and his lectures broke down the math really well. He does a LOT of review problems in class - its great! Super accessible in office hours. Encourages questions in class. Overall a great guy. Good sense of humor. Makes expectations very clear. Really guides the class through problems. Would 1000% take him again.
Dr. Zappa is a really great professor! He both competently teaches his students the material and is lighthearted. His class is fairly difficult but it is sporadic. Time out his homework as it is very difficult, but he is very accessible during office hours! There are 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final. He prepares you well for these assessments.
Professor Zappa is a very caring professor who wants to see all of his students succeed. I didn't receive a good grade but that is only because I am not good at math. I would recommend taking one of his classes!
Professor Zappa is a good teacher and is a great option for finite. I gave moderate effort to this class and was able to get an A just from listening to lectures and doing homework.
While this class was quite difficult, he was very easy to approach and ask for help during office hours and during lectures. Tests were difficult but he did his best to tell exactly what to expect during test reviews. Homework took a lot of time but office hours will be your best friend.
Great Prof! He does have an Italian accent but I never had a problem understanding him and he's more than happy to repeat himself if you missed a word. Many online and written homeworks that can help you if you don't do so well on the exams. Take him!
As someone who hates math because they're terrible at it, I looked forward to coming to Dr. Zappa's class. He is absolutely hilarious and understanding. He curves the grading scale so you only need a 50% to pass, which is a lifesaver for those trying to just get their math credit and move on. Take him!
Calc 2 wasn't a super easy class, but Prof was helpful during office hours which helped a lot. He's super nice and clear when explaining. Open to questions and answers them clearly.
Zappa is a great professor. His lectures are content heavy but he does a small amount of problems to make sure you understand the content. Online homework once a week and 5 written homeworks throughout the semester, so not that bad! Midterms are exactly like the written homework questions and ones he covers in class. Take him if you can!
Great professor for finite math; lots of information and notes during the lectures but really wants you to understand and always answers questions. 2 midterms and 1 final. Weekly online homework assignments and 5 written homeworks. Professor Zappa is always willing to help you, though!
Very organized, lectures and review similar to tests so you know what to expect. Caring and understanding professor, always grants homework extensions. Weights your highest grade the most to help. Take him!
Calculus 2 is a hard subject but Professor Zappa was great help. There is a lot of homework every week but he's easily accessible through his office hours. Overall he's a great professor!
Professor Zappa is a great teacher who knows the material well. He is patient and clear in his explanations, follows a neat schedule, and is always available outside class. His tests are difficult, and there aren't many chances to make up points. Overall good math instructor.
He is an excellent, organized lecturer. He is accessible outside of class and gives homework extensions if needed. His tests are very difficult. He does not offer extra credit. If you make an effort to ask for help, you will get that help. But don't expect extra credit just because you've established a connection with him. It won't happen.
prof zappa is awesome! finite itself was not too difficult, but he broke down the topics so well and was very clear in his teaching. Totally recommend him. Also never met anyone who loves the word "suppose" so much.
This professor was amazing. Zappa knows his stuff but also is very gracious and caring towards his students. He knows how to break concepts down really well and I definitely recommend him if you want to get the math core out of the way! 10/10 for real
He's alright. Taken 2 classes with him, and his tests are hard, but he curves if everyone fails (first class midterm had a 60% average). 60% of the grades are tests. The tests never look like the study guide, the test questions tend to be harder too so just study harder than the study guide would imply.
Who gave him 5? As a math student, this class has very unclear expectations. The practice exams and HW questions are all significantly easier than the exam, meaning that half the class drops after the first midterm, and the second half has to pray for the curve (me). I have a good GPA from all others I am not the problem TT NEED BETTER EXAM PREP
Great teacher! The class was fairly easy, especially if you are a note taker. His classes are based on lectures with examples of math exercises for all chapters. He assigns minimal homework for the class, but it is graded, so needs to be done correctly. Tests are fair and similar exercises are practiced in class.
Great teacher! His lectures are important and if you are a note taker this class will fit your learning style. Minimal homework, but it is graded, so must spend time on it. 2 midterms and 1 final. He goes over exercises in class which are very similar to the test questions. If you study and take notes, you'll be fine!
By far the best finite professor! Prof. Zappa understands this class is for non-stem majors, so he makes sure to break down topics well. You'll do great if you show up to class, take notes, and study before tests. Very kind professor and encourages questions. Very clear on grading criteria.
Professor Zappa is a great professor. He really cares about his students' success. There is My Lab Math HW once a week, 4 written HWs throughout the semester (that are graded on accuracy), 2 midterms, and a final. This class is pretty difficult, but he makes it as easy as possible and offers a generous predetermined curve.
DO NOT TAKE.
Horrible class. Do not take.
Not good, wouldn't recommend at all.
Absolutely awful!
Very bad. Give unorganized information during class and expect you to answer almost any questions that he has not mentioned before.
This professor is not engaging and unhelpful in explaining concepts. He expects you to know concepts he may have only briefly mentioned once. Does not present the information clearly. AVOID.
Terrible class.
Avoid if you can, disregard positive reviews. Rude and harsh grader. Not worth it.
Cold, mean, and very rude.
Very harsh grader for no reason
Not a good class.
Worst professor at this school
Avoid this professor.
Very difficult class
Dr. Zappa was a great professor! If you pay attention in class and take thorough notes, you will do well! Study hard for his tests as they can be lengthy but if you praticed and know the material, you will be fine!
Assigns way too much work, avoid if you can.
This class was too much work as a math major. Avoid.
Worst class ever.
don't take, avoid if you can
Don't take this class, the other reviews are correct.
Avoid if you can, other reviews are correct.
AVOID. He only gives three exams. Most boring lectures. Half the class dropped it. Theres no way someone who has half the class drop their course will get many positives. Avoid at all costs!!!
Harsh grader
Worst class I've taken as a math major
I'm a math major and the tests were confusing. Avoid if you can.
Don't recommend this class
Was very disappointed in this class and the professor, definitely would not recommend.
Avoid at all costs. Doesn't teach the material effectively.
Lots of pop quizzes, very difficult class
I would say take a different prof especially if you're a math major.
He's up there among the worst math teachers at Fordham. His lessons are too fast-paced and his teaching overcomplicates simple topics.
good class
Super amazing at explaining material and helping if confused. Open note quizzes and exams are just like the reviews.
Highly recommend him. His lectures, homework, quizzes, and midterms are exactly the same and he explains all concepts very clearly. There is weekly homework, which is pretty simple, and he's always available outside of class. If you pay attention in class and do the homework, its very easy to get an A in his class. Great class to fulfill the core.
I've taken a lot of math courses, and Dr. Zappa was by far the best math professor I had. His lectures are super straightforward and his exam questions are exactly like the homework and in-class exams. Cannot recommend enough. Not sure how he is in the lower level courses, but he does a great job at explaining the more advanced topics.
Super great professor and very easy class. He explains all concepts very clearly, has open note quizzes, and his homework, classwork, quizzes, and midterm and final are identical to review questions he does in class. Very accessible and always willing to help students, highly recommended for fulfilling math core requirement.
One of the best professors!!!! He goes super slow and in-depth which can be helpful for those who struggle with math. Hes super nice, doesnt have much character, but hes got a good heart. He sets you up for success, however the homework is always a bit harder. I recommend him.
Take Zappa! His class is super clear and understandable, and he curves final grades so a 93 is an A, 88 is an A-, and so on. Quizzes are with classmates and notes, so the only things you need to study for are midterm and final (which are exactly like the review). He will also slow down or give more examples when asked.
Dr. Zappa has been the best prof I have had so far! The group quizzes and tests align exactly with the class content. The hardest part about the class is the online homework. He explains topics clearly and goes slowly if students have questions. He also is very accessible outside of class and curves too! I cannot recommend him enough! Take him!!!
