Dr. Barter is the worst professor I've had at DU. Every single class is a lecture and she talks to us like we're 8 years old. It's almost impossible to pay attention in class because the lectures are so boring, and then the tests are so hard. Also there is so much busywork with this class, weekly homework due on Fridays and busy work for the labs.
She doesn't seem to understand how to connect with anyone during lectures. The only way you will pass the course is if you love Chem, but even then people who do struggle in her class. I would not recommend taking it at all your better off with no credits than her ruining your GPA
Dr. Barter has good intentions, as most professors do, but really struggles to keep students focused in class. Her PowerPoint presentations are filled with slides that are VERY wordy and chaotic, which many students find to be a headache to read through. However, Dr. Barter does encourage students to critique and provide feedback, so do that.
Came into this class expecting a challenge but instead I felt like I was in 8th grade. If you put in the work on her daily warm-ups and come to class to do clicker questions, then you will have NO problem at all getting a B. If you have some chemistry background as I did, it's an easy A. Also, she lectures by reiterating what the reading was about.
Dr. Barter is a great professor and you can tell she truly cares about her student's success. Lectures are fun, informative, and quirky. She encourages questions and uses good real life examples. I enjoy the collab quizzes. Barter is organized and clear with expectations.
Dr. Barter is one of the best professors I have had at DU. She has actually got me to like science and I am excited for class. She is always available for questions and will work with you until your questions are answered. Her excitement about science makes things fun and she gives us lots of practice to prep for exams
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH BARTER .... she is an awful professor and all of her tests ruin your grade because half of it is material she NEVER even taught. She talks to students like we are ten year olds and then goes to assign warm-ups, homework, pre-labs, post-labs, etc. Taking her class has been one of my biggest regrets.
Dr. Barter is an amazing professor, she's personable and also really helpful. She posts all of her lectures and videos on Canvas, but you definitely want to go to lecture because it really helps. She works through content at a good pace and gives lots of places for students to earn points.
Dr. Barter is one of an awesome professor I have seen in DU, she is very patient and warm-hearted. It looks like her course is complex , but all of them are easy and HELPFUL!! She will provide study guide and practices before each exams and she will reply all the emails quickly since you have questions. Overall, this is a great professor!
Dr. Barter is one of the most caring professors at the University of Denver. She is clear that she wants to help every student. However, her course is relatively difficult for a nonmajors course and is my largest bulk of work (many TAs say it is more than they had as majors). Oftentimes tests don't match lectures or anything in class. Not worth it.
All professors I have can teach, but Dr. Barter goes the extra mile all of us. She takes so much time to help everyone and encourages us all the time. She's really organized and her practice exams are great and she cares about all of her students. Barter is the best, take her!
Dr. Barter is super sweet and is always willing to offer help if you need it. The class itself isn't very hard, if you skim the readings before class, it makes lecture easy to understand. She gives practice exams for every test, most material on the test is from previous quizzes, exams, and homework.
Dr. Barter believed in me and so I believe in myself. She taught us to research before forming opinions and gave us an understanding of the science in our world. She is best of DU.
Dr. Bater is an amazing person, but this is the hardest course I've ever taken. Her teaching style is more fitting for a middle school, and makes learning the material confusing and hard to learn. There's tons of homework, quizzes, and 3 big exams that make up a huge chunk of your grade. If you're good at chem, go for it. If not, don't do it.
Dr. Barter is nice. She really tries to make her class interesting. However she treats her students like middle schoolers . I would only take this class if you kinda good a chem. She does give practice tests with answers that help.
Definitely one of the nicest and most caring teachers I have ever had & is definitely passionate about what she teaches. But, this class is ridiculous for students doing an undergrad major unrelated to natural sci. This sci sequence has made keeping up with my business classes absolutely miserable. Don't take it if u want an easy sci class.
Dr. B is the nicest and most caring professor at DU. This was not my easiest class but it was my favorite. I learned a ton and Barter is a gem - she truly cares is really understanding and is the best. Lectures are good, practice exams are helpful and overall great professor!!
Professor Barter is the BEST. Extremely helpful in office hours and lectures are great. She makes chemistry relatable and works really hard to make it understandable. Love her chemistry jokes and analogies. She really cares, values feedback and I recommend her class.
Barter is the reason I passed my science core. She recognizes her class has mostly non-majors and structures the difficulty accordingly. She cares deeply about all 120 students. She gives you the best chance to succeed in the course. Her course can be difficult--especially her final quarter--but she makes sure you get through it alive and well.
Dr. Barter is amazing! So kind and really cares about her students. Her lectures are very organized and helpful. She prepares us well for exams with practice tests and has very clear expectations. Shes pretty cool and super approachable and makes the material interesting and engaging - definitely recommend..
Dr. Barter truly cares about her students and the class. However, the class itself is pretty difficult considering it is a science class for non-majors. Lectures can drone on, and you would definitely have to put in a LOT of work for an A with all of the things that factor into your grade. She is kind and energetic about her job, very caring.
Shes a great teacher. I was scared taking chemistry being a business major, and the class has not been the easiest thing for me. She will work with you if you put fourth effort.
Tough grader!
She spent almost a whole month grading the final video.
Dr. Barter is one of my favorite professors I have had so far. She always does the most the help you, you can tell she wants you to succeed, and does a great job of engaging students during class. There are quite a few assignments, but this helps you in the long run with spreading out the points rather than just a midterm and a final exam.
Dr. Barter really cares about her students. She knows we are not chem majors but still wants us to do well in the course. The quarter is very organized on the syllabus, you know what you need to do, there aren't questions with that. Do the work, and you are totally fine. She also does collaborative quizzes in class which are super helpful!
Such a sweet lady and a great teacher. She genuinely wants for everyone to do well, and will reward you highly as long as you are trying and engaged in class. I would highly recommend Dr. Barter and is especially great for non-majors having to take a science course!
Her passion for Chemistry is palpable and contagious. She truly cares about the subject and her students. Even on an online format, she is amazing at cultivating participation and genuine curiosity.
Dr. Barter is one of the kindest professors I've ever had. Her class is hard if you don't work for it, but she is always so understanding whenever a student has a problem or needs some extra guidance. She will be there for you, and she truly wants all of her students to succeed.
Her 100x classes are definitely designed for non-majors. She has an extremely clear class structure/calendar and communicates with us often so you always know what to expect from her. You should do well if you do the homework and show up to lecture. The lab TAs were a little more variable but online labs were pretty easy overall.
Dr. Barter is the love of my life. She works so hard for all of her students and you can see how much she cares about all of them. She learned the names of everyone in my huge lecture and graded quickly and works hard to make learning science accessible to people outside of STEM.
Professor Barter is truly a sweetheart and cares about your education. Highly recommend. The work is mostly review from high school with some challenges. A lot of reading from the textbook, very lecture heavy but she gives great feedback on exams/homeworks and provides detailed study guides and practice exams.
Dr. Barter is a great professor and gives great feedback on assignments. However, for a non major course, its overwhelming. Ive had more homework in this class than I have for any of my major classes. The lectures are wordy and the exams are tough. If youre looking for your SI course and dont enjoy chem, do not do this one (labs are also 3 hrs)
Struggled on exams even though I completely understood material. Sometimes explanations made already confusing material more confusing. Overall I believe she's a good professor but not right for me.
Barter is a good professor, but there is so much work, and so much content. There's three exams and they are so difficult, but she is good about providing materials to help you, like study guides. Her teaching style is very middle school, but I appreciate it. She's a hard professor but I like her more than Cowen for sure.
Ms. Barter is awesome. I am not a chem major and get like 65s on all the tests but if you do all the homework, collaborative quizzes, and warmups well, you will a solid B in the class. Would not take chem again but she's cool
I loved Professor Barter. She is not interested in tricking students and makes everything very straightforward and possible. While you have to study for exams, the material she provides in preparation is everything you need to know. She was a great professor and made me really enjoy chem.
Dr. B is the best prof I’ve had at Du. She has clear guidelines and different types of assignments. Content is interesting, but Dr. B makes the class. Very patient, like the clicker questions, knows everyone’s name, makes lecture interesting. I like that she encourages questions, is kind and that made me want to do my best Highly suggest for SI
Professor Barter is hands down the best professor you could ever ask for. We learn so much relevant content and she gives us so many resources to help us learn. I appreciate the practice tests and worksheets and that there are so many types of assignments that count towards our final grades. Her lectures are actually really fun and helpful!
I adore professor barter. She is the best professor I have had - her positivity and excitement for everything makes such a difference. She is very organized and gives very clear guidelines and lots of help. I am so glad I took this class, I learned so much important content. She's the best, knows everyones name and makes the class amazing.
Dr. Barter truly does care about the success of her students and is super accessible after class. I have found that she doesn't necessarily teach directly to the exams and considering that those are worth most of your grade I found that aspect of this class difficult. There is not a lot of homework but definitely plan to spend lots of time studying
Dr. Barter is an absolute gem. She is super passionate about her class, cares immensely about her students, is super SUPER clear on what is expected of the class. Reading the textbook definitely helps, but skimming it is fine too. She recognizes that the class is catered to non-science majors!
Dr. Barter is the best professor I've ever had. She makes hard content make sense, and she is so available outside of class, and wants to see everyone succeed. If you have to take chem, take her. She makes connections with all her students. Her tests are hard but if you study you're fine.
Dr. Barter purposely explains the material in a way that anyone can understand. The class is very reading heavy. Before the midterm and final, she posted review materials because she genuinely cares about the success of her students. My experience with my TA was not so positive, but the lab was only one meeting per week.
Barter is an amazing person, but this is the hardest course I've ever taken. Her teaching style is more fitting for a middle school, and makes learning the material confusing and hard to learn. There's tons of homework, quizzes, and 3 big exams that make up a huge chunk of your grade. If you're good at chem, go for it. If not, don't do it.
Dr. Barters' passion for chemistry is contagious and truly transforms the intimidating world of Chemistry into digestible content. She cares so much for students' success and even knows all 150 of us by name. If you are a non-major required to take a science sequence, I recommend Chem with Dr. Barter! Not an easy class, but worth the hard work!
Dr. Barter is a great professor. She cares about her students and loves what she is teaching. she is very open about grading and makes sure that all her TAs are grading equally. There are a lot of assignments, but she drops some of the lowest grades so your final grade does not tank if you miss something.
I am not a chemistry major, but this is the class I most look forward to because of Dr. Barter. She is SO kind and approachable, she makes the class and chem fun and appreciates student questions. Appreciate how organized she is and how we have so many different ways to earn points, helpful practice exams. take her for SI, highly recommend.
Dr. Barter is a good professor, but she gives a lot of work that's not worth it for a class no one really cares about. I recommend taking a different science class. However, the TA's are nice and helpful so do reach out to them.
I cannot say enough about Dr. Barter, this class is so special because of her. She is SO clear with expectations and cares so much about students and our success. Lots of different ways to earn points that all help with understanding content. In class activities are helpful so always go to lecture on those days. Will miss this class and Dr. Barter.
The most insufferable person you'll ever meet probably.
Larger class environment but if you just take notes, do the readings, and show up to labs you should pass easily with a high B. The teacher is very kind and takes time to know each of their students. Classes are very lecture-heavy but you can usually half pay attention as long as you did the readings and understood them well.
LOVE her. She is smart and makes me comfortable to ask questions in class because she will help you and take time to value your question. Lots of ways to earn points and do good in course
Dr. Barter is alright. If you are looking for an easier science class, look no further. There is a warm-up before every class and homework and lab once a week. She does dumb things down quite a bit and focuses on some pretty useless information but she is nice and is willing to help outside of class. The lectures are kind of boring though.
She is super super nice, but is not an engaging lecturer. All 10 weeks all class long it just felt like I was being talked at, and there was nothing interesting about what she taught. We also learned about the most random topics. I was frustrated by her tough grading policies esp for a non-major class including automatic 50% off any late homework.
I love Dr. Barter!! She is such a nice and encouraging professor, and she does everything she can to make sure that all of her students understand the content. She can be a harsh grader (especially with labs - I have had points taken off for the smallest things), but she cares about her students and wants them all to succeed.
Professor Barter is super kind. You have a lot of work, but it doesn't take long/isn't super hard. She gives back a ton of points on tests when the class doesn't do well. She is a strict grader on homework, but homework is a small percent of your grade. Unfortunately, labs are pointless, but easy points if you try.
I love this class. Content is very interesting and Dr. B is the best professor I have ever had at DU. She makes class fun, is so supportive and always helps. Grading is very transparent and she gives us lots of resources to help. Her science jokes make class fun and I really like her collab quizzes that help me learn without the pressure. Take her!
Dr. Barter is an amazing professor! She is very nice, understanding, and open to questions. If you have taken chem before this will be a super easy class. Lectures are very helpful and the practice exams are the best way to earn a good score.
Somehow she found a way to put me in a bad mood every lecture. She uses weird metaphors that make no senes to make easy topics difficult to understand. I can teach myself what she teaches during lectures in 10 min. and understand it better.
Prof Barter cares soooo much to have her students learn. She goes out of her way to support students and is always supportive. This is the only class I feel comfortable asking questions in because I know my question will be valued. Never thought I would like my SI class so much, but its because of the professor and welcoming environment.
For CHEM 1001-1003, Dr.Barter is AMAZING. She takes her time in lectures to make sure everyone is understanding, and provides a lot of very helpful resources to prepare for exams. She gives practice exams with answer keys that are very similar to the actual exam, and more. Super nice and lovely, gives points back that everyone misses.
DO NOT TAKE DR.BARTER. She finds a way to frustrate me everyday. She treats us like middle schoolers yet somehow her lectures don't make sense. This class is too much work/stress for a class that nobody cares about and has THREE exams. I have been stuck with her for all 3 quarters and I want to die. I hate her class so much.
Do NOT take this class with her. She does not connect with students AT ALL because she treats us like middle schoolers. This class is way harder than it needs to be. It is a GPA dropper and not worth it. Avoid Dr. Barter if possible. There is a reason DU doesn't trust her with real STEM classes.
Professor Barter is the single most supportive professor at DU. She is perfection and I am so glad I took her chem classes for my SI.
Overall, she does somewhat care about her students but having 3 exams in 10 weeks is diabolical. The amount of work needed is unnecessary for a core class, I would not consider taking chem as a sequence due to the amount of work. Her lectures don't really make sense and no matter how hard you study or try, getting an A is nearly impossible.
The content can be challenging but I am glad I took this SI. Barter makes the class because she is clear with explanations, structure and very very kind, there is lecture and lab but both are helpful. She cares about students and our success. Dr. Barter wants you to do well, content is really interesting and real life. Take her for chem!
Dr. Barter is awesome. She is very kind and knew my name by week 4 without me even talking to her. The material is fairly easy if you pay attention in class. She gives you tons of resources to help you pass the tests.
This class is specifically designed for students who are not majoring in the subject, and I received the most homework and had to dedicate most of my time to this class to keep a decent grade. Three exams per quarter that comprise over 35% of the grade, totaling nine exams for the entire year, are unnecessary.
She cares way too much about students prioritizing her course and material that is completely unrelated to their major. The fact that exams closed notes does not realistically reflect real-world problem-solving, and the content is something I will never encounter again beyond this specific course.
This is a good class and has expected amount of work. But you take the class because of Dr. Barter, she is kind and provides amazing support to her students. The resources help, but students come to this class because of the professor and how passionate she is about chem, she is an excellent professor.
Barter is nice, but her teaching wasn't very helpful for non-major students who are taking this course. Overcomplicates things and puts a lot of pressure to understand difficult concepts. Requires you to constantly be getting help by the TA's in office hours.
Emily is easily one of the most caring and sweet professors I have ever had. Her lecture was nearly full but somehow memorized everyone's names within the first few weeks and cared about the success of every one of her students. There is not much homework, tests are not too difficult & she provides very helpful practice tests. FINAL PEP TALKS ALSO!
I was not sure about my SI but I LOVE Professor Barter. She makes the class and is kind to us and the content is actually interesting and I enjoy learning about chemistry with her. Go to her office hours, she will help and give motivation to keep going. Worth taking if only for the notes she writes on the board on exam day to give us confidence.
she was soooo lit, love her to death
First of all, Dr Barter is super kind and really fun, but she's unaware of the struggles her students go through. Her lectures are always very long, and she'll ask us “do you guys think we can keep going with the lecture?” only for her to be met with tired stares, which she ignores. If you did well at chem in HS, take this course. If not, run.
Barter is such a caring professor and really wants her students to succeed. The study guide and practice exams that she provides are a tremendous help to succeed with exams. There are other assignments that can help boost your grade if s you complete them too. It is very lecture based and is a little boring but overall she is very informative.
I love her! She made learning easy, graded quickly and very fairly. I am not a chem person but I loved this class. She is very clear and helpful. Dr. Barter is someone who truly cares about her students and is excited to be there. If you show up and pay attention, you will pass this class.
Dr. Barter seems nice enough but I honestly found her kind of unprofessional and passive aggressive at times. Willing to answer any questions that you have but can sometimes make you feel dumb or uncomfortable when you do ask. Very high-school-like in the way she runs her classes (lecture and lab). Overall, haven't had a great experience with her.
Working with Dr. Barter was a really positive experience for me. She was so sweet and really funny and she was also very organized and thorough with her instructions and expectations. She definitely knows how to laugh and have fun while also taking things seriously. While short lived, I enjoyed my time spent with her!
Quater 1 and Quarter 2 are 5s, however for quarter 3 its like a 2-3, her grade change really sucked and now the 4 massive homeworks are terrible, and having the first exam week 3 was definitly a choice
Dr. Barter is genuinely an amazing professor. She will challenge you, but puts in so much effort to make sure you have all the tools to succeed. Her chemistry class can be a lot, but I genuinely ended up loving it when I did not expect to. Love her.
Barter is an excellent professor. While her assignments can be a bit more difficult than her counterpart (Cowen), she is easier to understand and explains topics in a more digestible way than him. She is very kind and is willing to help you out if you ask her. Try not to miss any lectures, you will fall behind quickly.
While Emily barter seems like a very nice good person this class is absurdly hard. Do not take chemistry no matter what you do it is very unfair as some of the other science sequences have no exams while this class has 3 exams a quarter and I don't think I got better than a c on any of them
Dr. Barter is a genuinely nice professor and cares deeply about her students. The actual class is not something I would recommend, however. I showed up to classes and completed all the labs and homework's and still struggled to even achieve a B-. My advice is to take a different science sequence because almost all the other ones are much easier.
I was advised to take this SI because of Dr. Barter and I'm glad I did. You take CHEM not because of the subject, but because of Dr. Barter, who is amazing. The class is good and interesting but you take it for Dr. Barter who is the best professor I have ever had at DU, she's a star
She is extremely unwilling to accommodate students' needs, despite saying how receptive she is to feedback. She spends every lecture essentially regurgitating the textbook that she forces the students to buy the most recent version of, despite it being the same as the slightly older versions of the textbook. I would not recommend dealing with her.
