She's a harsh teacher. The average on one of the exams was a 65 and she said it was not a problem because the average on this exam was "only two points lower" than the average on the last exam which was a 67.

Easy A if you just go to class and get your clicker points, and make sure all Monday quizzes and Friday homework are turned in on time. Labs are done in groups. Id say just about on par with what a 100 level class should be

I like how she organizes the class materials. Tests are kinda hard and there are many tricky questions. Therefore, if you want to get good grades you need to work seriously for them.

Horrible Teacher, skips through powerpoint material fast and doesnt make sure the students understand, makes iclicker points worth more then they should be and makes questions worth more if you get them correct so even if you come to every class your more then likely still gonna miss 30-40 clicker points. Test averages are between 50-60.

Easily the worst professor I've ever had. She constantly bombards you with iClicker quizzes for actual accuracy and not just for participation. The tests are difficult without her giving us a study guide. You better dedicate 8 hours a day of studying if you want an A in this class or you'll be lucky if you get a high C.

I'm not sure why everyone around me was always having a tough time. The concepts covered in class were explained in depth and she always made an effort to answer the strange questions that students always had such as "like, what would happen if you like, threw a clock into a black hole man?". She would treat everyone with respect and was articulate

This class is one of the hardest. It shouldn't be listed as a 100 level. She makes you show up to class with clicker points, which are on questions we weren't taught. The tests are nothing like the study guide. She also talks way to fast as well as her slides only have pictures and keywords so have to read between the lines when taking notes.

Just utilize her office hours and do your homework, and you'll be fine. All the people griping probably don't see how easily manipulated the class is with the amount of easy online homework assignments. If you just get help on homework and do all the online work, your grade gets a HUGE cushion come test time.

She's very knowledgeable but not passionate about physics, friendly, and gives extra credit. She's not very accessible outside of class and often the practice doesn't fit with the exam. Exams are very hard as they are short but worth a lot. The other assignments can make up for it. I recommend different PH prof if you find physics difficult.

This is the worst class EVER. She gives like 4 impossible homeworks every week and clicker points are on things she has not talked about. Tests are IMPOSSIBLE because she gives trick questions and questions that we learn AFTER the test. Definitely the worst prof i have ever had. She should should just be an astronaut instead of a professor.

Was told that AA100 would be a good way to get core science credits out of the way. Lectures are way too fast and hard to understand. Participation is graded with clicker points that are rarely explained before the question. Not what I expected from a 100-level science class meant for liberal arts and business majors. Take horticulture instead.

I took this class because I needed an easy science with a lab for my major. Turns out this was my hardest class ever. It is a 100 level class but she teaches it at a 300 level class. Just make sure to do well on the homework assignments and always do the learning curves so when test time comes around you have a good cushion. Attend class always.

This is hands down the worst class I have ever taken. I would rather sit through kindergarten than attend this class again. The professor goes through the material way too quickly and none of what she says ever makes sense. All of her material is irrelevant and she makes it the most boring class ever.

I thought this was a fun class to get my science credits out of the way. I only used the online textbook to get the participation points, and for nothing else, so it was kind of frustrating having to shell out money for it. Other than that I found the lectures in this class really interesting but you need to take good notes otherwise you wont pass.

I took Dr. Hardegree-Ullman's Introduction to Astronomy class and it was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Definitely not an easy A!! You tend to get quizzed on things before you learn them and you need to remember small details for tests. Her lectures are very boring and the class set-up in general is poor. There is a lot of physics.

Trust all of the bad reviews here, they are right and it is true. She is very bad at teaching and seems bored and unmotivated. I believe the people that find these reviews unhelpful must be her TA's and her. AVOID this class at all costs. I joined astronomy because I am fascinated by space itself, but after taking this class, I don't care anymore.

Terrible. Someone who is well versed in math but cannot communicate her understanding. She doesn't seem to have the right intonation to emphasize points, then fails to drive them home with secondary clarification. It's almost as if she has a script memorized and has no depth to her understanding to shed light on the material through multiple lenses

People say that this is a hard class, and she definitely makes some effort to facilitate learning. She's very knowledgeable about physics, but she's not the best lecturer which is why most people complain. She posts lecture material, has office hours, emails promptly, has multiple extra credit opportunities, and has practice sessions. She's ok.

Very knowledgeable in her field but a very bad communicator of that knowledge. iClicker points are counted by accuracy and you have 2 homework assignments per week. She will fall behind in her lectures and quiz you on things before she teaches them. This class sucks, take it at your own peril.

Easy class. Astronomy is an easy science to take. Not the best teaching style. The presentations don't relate to any of the test. All quizzes are online and can be taken as many times as you want. You can bring a notecard to test. Once a week homework assignments (hard). But I hardly ever showed up to class and got an A and I'm an average student.

I thought Dr. HU was great. She did a nice balance between explaining concepts and working out problems on them. Her practice exams are super on point with the material, so if you can do those, you can ace the exams. Exams are 12 MC, with 10 being 100%, 11 or 12 being 105%. She gives you equation sheets. The final only had the equations necessary.

Dr. HU is very knowledgeable in physics, but her lectures were dry and hard to follow. I learned the most in the weekly practice sessions she held at the LSC. She emails with homework questions promptly which was really helpful. Her exams are 14-16 multiple choice questions with no partial credit. However, she offered extra credit. She was okay.

DO NOT take this woman's class. Her lectures are extremely boring, she does not take feedback from the class, and she teaches things that will not be on the exam. All preparation for the exams is up to you because she is so unhelpful. Astronomy seems like an easy A, but she makes it extremely hard for no reason. Easily one of the worst professors.

Dr. Hu will puts the time into you if you put time into her. I met with her once a week after class to help me with the weekly homework assignments (got 90-100% on all of them.) I passed the class easily, just had to take that time to get 100% on homework. Shes so fun and easy to talk too. Don't judge her too quickly, I recommend office hours :))

Good class if you want to look up the answers for everything and not even try. The lectures are as dry as a desert, knowledgeable yet doesnt know how to make the class any interesting. The prof couldnt explain how to put a screen door on a house,because she cant explain how this class is meant to function. Like really why four midterms. Not cool

She's a really great physics professor. But she's also just the most amazing person. My friend took physics from a different professor and he only made PDF documents. I reached out to her and she sent all of her lectures to my friend and SAVED her grade. Goes above and beyond, for all students taking physics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this class and Professor HU. I took Astronomy 101 online over the summer session and found it really fun. I can't speak for in-person classes of hers (yet) but this class was really great - she knows a lot about her field and was always available to answer questions. Would definitely take again!

Quite a bummer. Emily is super disrespectful in her dealing with students. Has no patience or compassion for mistakes or answering questions. Cares more about her content and class than her students. Honestly, one of the worst professors I have ever had. Sent her an email thanking her for her time with a response that was super rude. Save yourself.

Online "lectures" were only about 10-15 min videos but sounds like she's just reading off a script from the textbook the whole time. Homework is 5x harder than her example problems. Exams are rough, but open note. However, if you get one question wrong, you get the next 3 wrong (about 15 q's total). Honestly, don't feel like I learned much.

The lectures don't help at all with weekly quizzes and homework and the hw is graded harshly. Everything is due at 5 pm and she isn't lenient on excuses, claiming one low quiz/hw gets dropped anyways. It's your responsibility to make sure everything submits on canvas and if it doesn't go through then it's on you. Way too hard for a non-stem class

Dr HU really dropped the ball at online education. We got (in total) about 40 mins of lectures a week and homework that was insanely difficult compared to what we learned. Beginning of the semester as well she went through and lowered all students lab grades simply because she had the time, mine for example going from a 90% to a 50%.

Get ready to spend most of your time on Quizlet trying to find the answers on her quizzes and tests. The homework assignments she assigns do not belong in a 100-level class. Overall poor experience

Dr. HU really put zero effort into teaching physics online. For a 5 credit class she would put a maximum of 40 mins of lectures a week which were posted to youtube and sounded like she was reading from a script. Her example problems were very simplistic compared to her homework and test questions. Worst prof ive ever had and this is my 3rd year.

This class is unnecessarily hard for a level 100 Non-Stem course. Homework has nothing to do with the modules and the quizzes are difficult. Some vocab words aren't even listed and you have to search through the lectures. She's also not very understanding. "Blank, missing, or illegible submissions cannot be re turned in after the deadline expires"

Dr HU gave some really poor lectures, I mostly used physics knowledge from high school to succeed in the class. I felt like I didn't really learn a lot of the material. Additionally, labs were poorly managed, and online labs were a nightmare (unorganized, not useful). Grading was not consistent. Take physics with a different professor if possible.

Professors who constantly say "it's intuitive, it's easy, it's straightforward, it's obvious," are typically bad professors. 5-10 minute lecture videos for difficult concepts isn't sufficient. Grade rubric is unclear. Doesn't give enough time for assignments. Labs & lectures are poorly coordinated. If you can take PH121 with anyone else, do it.

This is one of the worst professors I have ever had in my life. Be ready for a ton of homework (all due at 5pm for some reason) and the shortest lectures ever, to cover extremely difficult topics. This professor does not care about her students or their mental health at all. The TA's should get all the credit for teaching this course

The lectures are too short and half baked. It is really hard to learn from lectures, and TA office hours are less helpful than HU's PH121 class: Prof. HU got mad at TAs for 'giving away the answers' (this is code for answering questions and helping with the homework, which is the point of office hrs). She is an inept teacher and should be avoided.

Her class was hard but she was such an inspiration. This course is loaded with reading and her prerecorded videos. If you divide the workload, you will do fine. The homework is sometimes challenging but if you go to her office hours, you will have a better understanding. I often found myself looking at the stars after this course.

Not the worst professor I've ever had, but she's pretty close to it. We are no longer having to attend school online because of COVID-19, but she only taught this online (youtube). I don't know if it was because she was scared to teach it in person because of covid or if she was lazy. Only four 15 min videos a week and then 2 homework assignments.

If youre a student with academic accommodations expect for things to be so much more difficult for no reason. She completely doesnt care about student with disabilities and will make things hard for no reason. A friend in the class couldnt get an extension for an assignment they missed for a funeral which they had proof they were at.

Virtually everything in her lectures is completely useless since none of the material is on the quizzes or exams. the study guides are also useless since they don't represent what's on the exam. I'm more convinced she studied astrology rather than astronomy since everything she says is very scripted.

Do yourself a favor and never consider taking HU unless you absolutely have to. Her lectures will be the biggest waste of your time. She does not care about you as a student what so ever. We had an exam scheduled for the day after we got back from spring break which says a lot about her sympathy.

I was worried about this prof after reading this page before the semester, but honestly, she is a good teacher. Her lectures are clear and full of demonstrations and practice problems that are very helpful. My only complaints are that our hw assignments are due two days apart at 5pm, Also, your lab might be a day ahead of where you are in lecture.

The only complaint is that the homework's are due at 5pm T and R, yet they are not graded for weeks. Her class is really not as bad as many people on here make it out to be.

The lectures are very long drawn out and extremely boring. I stopped attending the class when I can because I was performing the same as when I did attend. Her study guides do not match ANY of the midterms whatsoever. As well as the online class has extra credit opportunities for said midterms, but the in-person class does not.

I am not sure why she has not changed the format or criteria. This is not an intro course and there is no instruction on the Stellarium software and labs have nothing to do with what we learn. This is the worst class I have ever taken at CSU and I am a senior. Nothing valuable will be learned. BE PREPARED TO TEACH URSELF LITERALLY EVERYTHING.

Professor HU does give some extra credit assignments, but that is only because a lot of her students need those points to avoid failing her class. If campus is closed for any reason during your lab session, it counts against lab attendance. Almost no feedback on assignments. Her lectures are hard to follow and don't help with exams or homework.

She is the worst teacher I have ever had. The homework is impossible compared to the boring kindergartener lectures that she recycles. The trip to the observatory is a joke. If you are somewhat interested in astronomy, or even if you enjoy it a lot, do not take this class! You will be extremely stressed out from nonsense homework and unfair tests.

This class is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be, if you are struggling she is very willing to help during office hours and can even arrange to meet you if her times are not in your favor via zoom. Show up to the lecture because the slides can be very bare bones but she will explain almost everything in the slide in class. Fun material!!

This class should not be a level 100 class... Emily uses recycled material with hard-graded quizzes and homework weekly. For people who have no interest and math and astronomy and are taking it because they need the credits for their degree, avoid this class at all costs.

Every single week we are assigned a quiz and a homework assignment that has nothing to do with the lesson. If you think you are going to be learning about the stars and the constellations YOU ARENT, you are learning space math and physics. Don't even get me started on how awful the test are; the study guides don't help.

She's very condescending and assigns more work than what you learn, if you learn it. We once spent an entire week on exoplanets and the homework had to do with radiometric dating. One week had a unit test and still had a quiz and written homework due Fri. She also got 2 weeks ahead in lecture so we took a test on information we learned a month ago.

My friends, I saw the warning signs. I checked RMP and saw that Professor Hardegree-Ullman had low ratings. But I was arrogant -- "How bad could it be?" I thought. I was testing fate. Deathly dull lectures, harsh and inconsistent grading, 5PM Friday deadline for all homework. My whole semester ended up revolving around this 100-level AUCC course.

She is a nice person, but her teaching style and grading is difficult to understand. Her lectures don't match what we have to do on the homework, and the homework and lectures to not match what is given on tests. There is lots of outside work, but it is a fun science class to take.

Weekly quizzes consistently weeks behind lecture. Homework is quite difficult and very time-consuming, about 70% of it is math that isn't taught. The "observatory" assignment was completely disorganized and chaotic held in the street. Luckily, the grading scale is adjusted to accommodate her harsh grading and cheat sheets are allowed on tests.

This is a 5 credit course, so dont expect it to be easy. This prof does set the students up for success, between the extra TA office hours on tuesdays and thursdays (which are how you get 100% on all the homework), to going over many example problems in class, you can get an A in this course. It does require paying attention and some studying.

I thought astronomy would be fascinating but now I hate it, do NOT take this class take Geology instead. I managed to scrape an A but it was insanely difficult, the homework questions were unecessarily hard and weren't even discussed in lecture or in the textbook. At least there aren't any projects

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I attended every single lecture, put hours into notes sheets I never looked at once for tests (that were based on the given vocab lists and study guides given BY HER), and did every homework and still did awful in this class.

While attendance is not mandatory for a grade, it is really hard to pass the class if you do not attend lectures. There are only a few tests, but they are not easy. The in-person class had Friday classes to work on homework and ask questions. Homework was not very hard, but did not fully relate to content and tests.

The reason she gives an entire 8x11" front and back for all of the tests is because none of the lecture material actually sticks. The office hours didn't help at all, most of the course relies on the chance you essentially already understand the material, or can learn quickly. Very hard to retain every piece of info when practically on your own.

If you take this online, drop it ASAP. The lecture videos she posts each week are the dryest most non-imformative slides you will ever see. No content is actually written on the slides, she just talks. The class is just astrophysics, not what anyone I have talked to expected for a 100-level class. Avoid this class like the plague. Worst class ever.

I would rather eat glass than be in the same room as her. Her lectures are the biggest waste of time and an insult to people who actually attend the class. She fights tooth and nail to keep her late penalties regardless of if you have a valid reason to turn something in late or if you straight up have accommodations. Don't take this class.

All the lectures are available online. Listening to her speak is so boring so class sucks and you don't retain information. An A is an 85% though which is nice. Weekly homeworks and lecture quizzes.

I found that overall Emily was a pretty good instructor although I felt that the material in her lectures could be tweaked a bit to reflect what was on exams. Emily used a very generous grading system but even with that this class was challenging; just make sure to REALLY study for her exams and turn in HW.

She is clearly very passionate about Astronomy but severally struggles in making the material understandable and digestible for people with no background in the topic. From the first lecture I felt like I was a full year behind, and she really does not explain much during lecture. She had us use an app but failed to explain anything beyond basics.

Astronomy is super interesting, and Professor Hardegree definitely knows a lot about astronomy, however, she lacks the ability to make the lectures interesting. I was better off just reading from the textbook than going to the lectures. I took this class as an AUCC and it's manageable, but if you're planning to take this class don't be too excited.

While Professor Hardegree is undoubtedly knowledgeable about astronomy, her lectures are not engaging. Rather than attending lecture, I was better off just reading the slides. It's manageable to pass this class as an AUCC like I did, but outside work is required. Resources like tutoring are provided but it is a lot of work for a 100 level class.

I'm not sure why Emily has such a low rating. She genuinely cares and offers office hours EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. After having Kinnari Meta, it was amazing to have a teacher actually teach the material. Going to class is recommended because she goes over some practice problems not covered in the lecture recaps on Canvas, but not required.

Emily offered so many office hours and was even willing to set up private or group tutoring with students on a weekly basis. I met with her once a week to work on the homework and she was incredibly helpful. If you go to office hours or sign up for tutoring, you can get 100% on every homework. She also offers plenty of extra credit.

Lectures are messy and she seems unprepared. practice problems do not reflect what is tested on. Concepts are already challenging but her messiness makes it difficult to follow. Canvas page is messy and hard to find material. Good news, we get a cheat sheet front and back for exams. they can include anything you want on them, so that is nice.

She is a very nice person, but when it comes to teaching, she shouldn't teach. Her lectures are messy, hard to follow, and very fast. She also ends class 5 minutes early each time. PH121 doesn't help prepare you at all, so good luck. The material is already hard, and her messiness makes it even harder. Overall, she is just very unorganized.

I had this professor for the lecture and lab. Lectures are boring and not engaging. If you have accommodations don't take her! The lectures didn't line up with the homework, so you basically teach yourself the material. The lectures also don't line up with the lab so some labs are on topics you haven't learned yet (or won't learn at all.)

Emily was a fine professor, definitely a LOT better than the professor I had for PH121. She can be a little disorganized and the lectures don't always line up, but overall I learned the content effectively. This class was NOT hard if you put in work to do well and asked questions regularly. Emily is as effective as is needed and was ok overall.

Don't expect to get an easy A, but she gives great lectures and plenty of extra credit. If you're struggling, she is always available to help. I learned a lot in her class.

A lot of busy work with no actual meaning behind it all. The lectures and study materials ("vocab lists", "study guides", pre-recorded lectures) provided are so long, dry, and useless for hw, quizzes, and exams that you're practically better off googling the essentials of Astronomy, getting ideas from chatgpt, or just skimming through the textbook.

Having this class was my worst nightmare. Do not take this class, that is the only piece of advice I can give anyone. This teacher should not be teaching, she does not care about you or the class. Her timely responses to emails are everything but timely and can be very passive aggressive.

This class was alright. Not the simplest course, as it is a physics class, but not the worst thing as well. The lectures were very simple, but it is necessary to ask questions if something isn't understood, answers might be vague. The hw is more difficult than what's taught in class, and doesn't resemble what's on tests.

The teacher did not make the lectures engaging and her slide decks were pretty bad, she does not appear to like teaching. The vocabular lists and study guides are all but useless in preparing for the exams. The homework assignments also have very slim correlation to the test. Would NOT recommend this class to anyone.

After this class i guarantee not, a single student will ever consider any sort of future in anything astronomy related. This professors' lectures are truly painful. As well as having 3 midterms plus a final with the study guides and vocab having zero relations. there are homework's with absolute zero relation to the midterms and finals. don't take!

Watch the lecture videos and take notes during the lectures and you'll do fine. The tests are super easy if you fill out the study guide, study the vocab, and pay attention. I found that reading the textbook really helped, even though most students don't. Go to office hours! The TAs are fantastic. The homework is unrelated to the tests though.

Lectures in this class were hard to follow because the slides were often very vague and the lecture was very scattered/unclear. The exams in this class were very hard because the questions on them were often very random/specific, and didn't match up with the study guide and practice quizzes.

If you go to class the lectures make no sense because she moves too fast and jumps around. If you don't go to class and just take notes it makes no sense because the slides have random numbers and images with no explanation?????? Also no matter how hard you study you are going to do terrible on the exams because they have NOTHING to do with slides.

I have never believed in truly bad professors, just different ways of learning... Emily changed that belief. Physics 121 is the worst class I have ever taken. Even if I wanted to teach myself, the materials provided are not enough to learn. I've been passing because of youtube. If you like having a will to live I'd steer clear from this class.

I loved Emily's class! The content was super interesting and Emily is clearly passionate about her field. The textbook was very helpful and the lectures were usually clear. The homework is interesting and I felt it cemented the concepts taught in class. You need to study to pass but there is plenty of help available from the TAs. I would recommend!

I took physics in highschool, and Emily teaches physics... her own way. Changing equations and rules because she thinks it makes it "easier," but it really just makes things more confusing if someone has prior knowledge. To get an A you need an 85 or above, instead of lowering the threshold I think the course should just be taught better...

I had this professor for the lecture and for the lab. I was really nervous going into this class after seeing all the other reviews, but I don't think that she was as bad as some of the other reviews say. She gives a lot of support and resources for exams but homework is very weird. The homework isn't taught in lecture or tested on in the exams.

Emily was amazing! She is very passionate about what she teaches and that really comes through. Attendance isn't required for lectures but you definitely need to go if you want to understand the material. It moves at a fast but manageable pace and Emily is very approachable and answers every question. One of the best professors I've had.

Emily taught physics in a way that made sense, although examples used in class sometimes didn't match the homework. Lab was difficult and unorganized to start, but got better once new rules were implemented. If you have to take physics, please take it with Emily. She's the only physics professor I've heard good things about, and I agree with them.

LEAGUES better than previous PH professor. took over the summer, has plenty of office hours/flexibility for opportunities to study and ask questions and was extremely helpful. would know homeworks inside and out to prepare for exams, as they are difficult. some extra credit with huge boosts, and quizzes every lab. hard but doable course!

Emily is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her class is structured for student's success. Physics is a hard subject and she makes it manageable. You have to study and she provides plenty of materials, lecture videos, and office hours. People who do poorly are not trying or very reasonably should be weeded out, sorry.

Would I say for a Physics professor? Out of the ballpark amazing. I have a few complaints, mainly that the lab format does not allow enough time to complete the lab report. Additionally, there is a lack of consistency between the homework, iClickers, and the exams. They do not match in difficulty. You get a cheat sheet during exams.

Had Emily for 1 and 2. She was truly amazing! Lectures aren't recorded so you have to go to class, but every single iClicker is extra credit and she offers other EC opportunities as well. Physics is my most hated subject but Emily makes it easy to succeed. You get a double sided note sheet (can be typed) on exams! Labs are the only annoying thing.
