I enjoyed the class, loved the workshop-discussion environment, and grew to appreciate my classmates as a family of friends. But the Prof can be too strict, confusing, and pretty odd. Overall, great class if you're comfy with discussions/openly workshopping your writing, but be willing and ready to deal with her specific needs. Also NEVERBELATEomg

Class is a broad workshop consisting of one fiction piece, one non-fiction piece, and some poetry. Some people had tough time with her grading, which can be hard to understand with an abstract topic like hers. But overall if you put in the effort and show up to class there shouldn't be a problem, and she can be really insightful.
nice atmosphere in the workshops. she is very odd, and her critiques are mostly prescriptivist in nature so if you don't do her corrections you'll get lower grades. she kills creativity, def doesn't inspire it. what a buzz kill she is. watch ur every move she notes EVERYTHING. and she's often unorganized and tardy herself!!
avoid her if you can. She hates lateness (& notes it) but is OFTEN late herself & unprepared. She doesn't provide enough room for "creativity" and conforms your writing to her liking and if you don't make changes to your work to fit her critiques, your grade suffers. She killed my interest in this area of English.
If you are an international student, don't take her class. She doesn't like to understand international student at all!!!!!
Terrible, an absolutely dreadful professor. I am a writing major, and was considering doing nonfiction until I took her class. You are allowed only two absences, and beyond four you are guaranteed a C or less (she told me this was to "punish me"), which is unbelievable. If you care about your writing and your grade, avoid her at all costs.
She's a nice person, but gets mad at elementary grammatical mistakes made on your work. If you plan on becoming a writer I would say that you should take her class because it's a challenge. I had her for Engl 300 and the work load included 1 fiction, 1 non fiction, 2 poems, and revisions for all the previously stated.
I took her creative writing workshop and it completely turned me off to take another. She is an insightful and perceptive professor and usually willing to help you. However, if she doesn't like the style of your writing you will not get a good grade. As said, she will try to mold your stories to her liking! And don't even think about being late!
Really bad professor. Has her own way of writing and thinks everyone has to write like her. DO NOT take her for the sake of your grade. She does not help.

Terrible teacher, doesn't really help with revisions and grades them pretty harshly. When she's in a bad mood she pretty much takes it out on the whole class. Not to mention, she expects everyone to participate on the same level and holds you to the same standard of the most outspoken student in class. Avoid if possible
This professor has probably been one of the most challenging for me. She is definitely a hard grader and does not like anyone else ideas. If you want to pass agree with everything she says and write your papers like this is your major.
Worst professor I have ever had, for an intro class she treats it like a 300 level class. The amount of books you will have to buy for her class are ridiculous, she is extremely disorganized and not lenient with deadlines whatsoever. The fact that she makes you do reading logs as if you were in middle school is ridiculous. AVOID HER! notworthit
OKAY, the people down there are not lying BUT!! You can still get an A in this class if you enjoy English and put some work in. She's crazy and honestly she did not like me but I got my A. I did EXACTLY what she said on my revisions (usually rewrote the entire paper from scratch). Don't take her for an easy A. Participate! Try not to get offended.
Professor Hunter gives a lot of useful information and is great with feedback on essays and papers. Be on time, attend, do the work and you will like or love this class. Good sense of humor and interesting assignments.
If ur thinking of taking her class to fulfill the requirement, try to find a different prof. She makes us do 1-2 page reading logs every week, a 10 page research paper on Shakespeare and other papers. It's an okay class but it's WORK she takes no excuses. I spent money on 5 books that I'm never gonna use again because she's strict on editions.
A narrow minded professor who wil not yield to any opinions but her own. Attempts to grade without properly reading a student's work or the assigned text. Critical of alternate mindsets. Modifies assignments and syllabus durng the course, offering no solid structure of instruction. Lectures are mediocre. Take if you like boring or dont need a GPA.
Terrible Professor. Will not look at papers objectively. If you do not agree with her opinion then you will fail. Edits your papers and gives comments but if you follow her instructions she still will give back your paper with a poor grade. No consistency. Rarely gives out A's. Attendance including lateness is pretty strict. DO NOT TAKE HER.

She's a tough grader so unless you know you're a good writer don't take her. She encourages participation and might even call on you if you're quiet. However, most of your grade comes from your writing. I thought she was really mean at first, but if you speak to her alone she is actually nice, but she is strict.

VERY HARSH GRADER. Had her my very first semester, so rude awakening to college. Grades as if you have a masters in english and writes speeches for the president for a living. A bit rude as well. A very tough grader but if you pay attention to her feedback, you can easily raise your grade. She makes funny side comments that make the class laugh. You definitely have to work for your grade but she knows what she's doing. I would definitely take another course taught by her again.
There are 2 papers and a research paper. You are able to revise your research paper twice before final submission. There are no pop quizzes. The final is very easy as long as you attend class. If you miss more than a certain number of days she WILL fail you. She's a tough grader but if you rewrite and follow her comments you will get an A
Definitely do not take her for creative writing! She is very close minded and difficult to work with along with being very not accepting of creative work. She wants you to write her story, not yours. There are 4 papers plus the final research paper on a Shakespeare play. You are able to revise your papers but it wont do much because this proffesor is an extremely hard grader. She almost has an imaginary set of guidelines that she wants all of her students to follow. Honestly a great person but horrible teacher . You must keep up to do OKAY.

First paper I received a B and I revised that paper for an A. Every paper after that I received A's. I'm a good writer but not phenomenal by any means. She's a tough grader but she provides a ton of feedback on papers and is always available for appointments to talk about further improvements. Not as scary as these reviews make her out to be tbh.

She is the definition of a tough grader. She makes you actually work for your grade, even if the grade is considered low. However, once you show her the efforts she can contribute much to you as well.

Honestly, you can't trust anyone at Hunter because they all expect grades to just be handed to them like in high school. Professor Hunter is not an easy grader but she will seriously help you improve your writing. If you got solid grades in high school english and follow her very detailed comments, you'll be fine. She is sweet and understanding.
She shouldn't be allowed to teach a creative writing workshop. You will do very little creative writing and tons of analytical/critical writing. She's an unpublished life-long academic who assumes she knows it all. How she has a job at Hunter is a mystery to me and an insult to such an amazing institution and English department, enough said.
At first, I was terrified to take her class. However, as the semester went on she turned out to not be at bad as her reviews. She is a tough grader, yes and very unorganized and unclear when it comes to what she wants us to write certain papers on but she does give you chances to re-submit and fix your work. Also, she has a witty sense of humor.
Don't take her!! She is the toughest grader and doesn't even understand you. She 'MAKES' you go to her office for conferences, to talk about how bad you did on a paper no matter how good it was. She makes other people read your essay's to do group essay reading, which was always unorganized and never planned correctly at all.
All Ill say is .... run while you have the chance . You rather take English next semester with a different professor than take it with someone like her.

I thought I was a good writer before this class; I failed every paper, and she's unclear on what she actually wants you to improve. I did not listen to rate my professor and I wish I did. From the beginning of the semester I knew I would not like her for the comment she made to me. Belittled me for sure and def. thought I could write before this class... guess not. Does not even post grades at all during the whole semester. Avoid this class at all cost!

Professor Emily Hunter is not a good teacher to take. I have trouble experience with her. She gets a lot of people bad grade but does not explain things well.
Professor Emily Hunter is not a good professor to take. She does not tell students good directions how to write a good essay, just gives us bad grades such as C and B-. A tough grader.
Professor Hunter is bad per say, shes pretty meh. Allows you to correct your paper if you got lower than a C for a grade of B-. Has conferences with you so know what she wants you to fix in essay, plus gives good feedback on essay footnotes. She IS very snarky and belittling though. Absolutely hates lateness
Professor Hunter is a TOUGH grader and the feedback that she gives for essays isn't specific enough to help you in correcting them. Most of the time she will say that something is unclear or that she couldn't understand what you are saying. Even though your peers have no issue during peer review. Though she was nice at times, I would not recommend.
Please plan ahead, give yourself time to do her assignments. She has peer review for the first two essays, however, we weren't able to do the last essay with peer review due to time. She's funny, but I feel I wasn't ready for this class as a freshman in my first semseter. She has logs almost every week and check your deadlines. Very harsh grader

AWFUL PROFESSOR - AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Gives useless feedback, is rude to her students, and an incredibly harsh grader. I have taken 3-500 level English courses at Hunter (as a non-degree), and have never received lower than a B+. She basically told me that the way I learned to write papers was incorrect yet offered no assistance on the matter.
She is unkind and has absolutely no empathy. I missed a week and a half of class for a medical procedure, DURING A PANDEMIC. I provided proof and yet it was not an "excused absence" in her mind. There were times she indicated not to do something and when I stop doing it, she offers it as a suggestion. Or if she implies something is redundant and you omit it, she tells you to add it back. Professor Hunter is deceptively one of the harshest, most head ache enduing professors I've had. Expect the syllabus to change biweekly. Really take note of the analyses she presents in class and just parrot them back on her assignments. Synthesizing your own analysis is discouraged since she'll mark you wrong. Her analysis is the only correct one

What else can I say about Professor Hunter other than don't take her. She is the first professor who doesn`t allow laptops and changes the syllabus every class. Expect a lot of HW and readings. The negative reviews are true - and Professor Hunter is not sweet. She is combative and the only opinion that matters is her own. Don't take this class, I honestly have walked away feeling way worse about myself as a student than I did before. Professor Hunter is not open to other opinions. Her opinion is the only one that matters. She is rude and no matter what you write she will give you a grade equivalent to an incompleteness. No matter how good of a writer you are she will not be satisfied. No one in my class gets good grades from her. She is just absolutely a terrible teacher.
Do not take this professor! Be prepared to have 10 syllabuses. Literature is about interpretation and everyone has a different view. However, its clear Professor Hunter is somehow the author herself of all literature since her interpretation is the only "right" one.

I genuinely love Professor Hunter as a person. She is very caring, especially during individual conferences. She always gave me helpful feedback. I didn't do too great on the first essay, but with her guidance, I did well on the final and the research paper. I participated, enjoyed the reading, and did all the hw. She's funny, trust me. Just try!

Professor Hunter is great because she teaches students that writing in college is different than in high school. She cares a lot about her students and she gives great feedback. This is a writing intensive course, so she assigns a small writing log every couple of classes. If you want to improve your writing, she is very reliable and helpful.
I should've believed the reviews and not taken this class (but I needed it for med school). Prof. Hunter is not a good educator. She does not respect any literary opinions or ideas besides her own. I already have Bachelor's and Master's degrees and have published research! But even my writing was not good enough for her. Needless to say I withdrew.

Nice & funny prof. Harsh grader but lets you resubmit papers for a higher grade. Gives clear instructions on how to write papers. Good feedback in conference. Syllabus does change but she will let you know when it does. Attendence mandatory. Typed papers. Surprise quiz sometimes. Understanding if you talk to her. I liked her, but to each his own.
She doesn't offer extra credit, she doesn't care if you're late. And she will purposely fail you if you any assignments. And she grades very rigorously.

Trust me and the reviews when I say that you would save money by NOT taking this class cuz you will fail. She accused me and half my class of plagiarism; your opinion is useless as well. The professor's class was so bad that about half the class dropped it/stopped showing up midway through the semester. She gets off topic a lot and sometimes doesn't even teach, she just sits there and yaps.

Do not ever take her class. She gets pissed at the class at least once a week and once gave my class a pop quiz on the most obscure info ever. She later dropped that quiz, but why get angry that none of us knew what the answer to your question was. Maybe that just means you did not teach properly.

took her last year, abundance of reading in short time given, hefty amount of papers due, she LOVES pop quizzes, and over half of them doesnt even make any sense. likes to accuse students of AI use simply because of some phrases or words that seem like ai would use or words that are too, so-called, sophisticated for students like us.
She makes it so hard to add your own opinions. Her lectures just contain story time and she can be very passive aggressive. In addition, to this she gives so many pop quizzes.Sometimes though she can be very insightful, especially when it comes to what she wants from my writing. Yes it's harsh, but it tends to help.
