Be prepared to be in complete overwhelm the entire time you're taking this class. Study guides for test are ridiculous and she won't give exact specifics of what to see on the tests. Both my study guides for the tests so far have been over 40 pages and I still haven't done well. Not respectful or kind to students. Lecture is mandatory.
Dr. Jackson is by far one of the most difficult ad disrespectful professors I have ver had. She is rude to students during lecture and her tests are nothing like the study guide she provides. The book does not help you study correct material for her exams either. On tests with very poor averages she will blame the students for not being prepared.
Professor Jackson doesnt want to help her students succeed. Her lecture slides have barely any information on them. There are in-class questions every class that are graded on accuracy. She gives study guides that when completed, are nothing short of 30 pages, and the exam questions are extremely difficult. I would not ever recommend taking her.
She's probably the worst professor I've had here and I'm a senior. Her lectures are an hour and 15 minutes of straight lecturing from powerpoint slides and they are the most boring things ever. Her tests? Awful and the average is usually between a 50-60 percent and she doesn't curve. The study guides are long and have nothing to do with the tests.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't care about her students passing the class. The average on tests are around 60% and she blames her students for not studying hard enough rather than her tests and teaching. I have gone to her officer hours numerous times and she is absolute no help. Unless you are Einstein don't take this class
This class is overwhelming. Study guides do not match up with tests. Tests are too lengthy to finish in the time given. Does not respect her students and blames them for not doing well on the exams. Exam averages are 60% and doesn't curve. Unless you have taken upper level biology classes, it's hard to do well
I don't completely hate her like other reviews say, mainly because the lab fro this class helps a lot with the material in the lecture. With that being said it's not terribly difficult to get a B in her class due to the fact her tests are only 35% of the entire grade. It's not as bad as it seems, people just need to suck it up
Overall the class was not difficult because there were many ways to get the points needed to keep your grade up. The tests are difficult and really require you to study, but they are a small portion of your grade. She is not rude! Simply approach her in a respectful manner and she will do the same to you. Also be respectful during lecture.
Avoid at all costs. What Dr. Jackson lectures about is very different from what is on the tests, which are too long for the time allotted. It is disrespectful of her to get angry at the whole class for not properly preparing for a test when the average is very low, rather than entertaining the thought that maybe there was an issue with her test.
Professor Jackson is not a good teacher. She definitely knows what she is talking about but fails to educate her students. Her tests are horrid. She gives a three page study guide and it turns into 10+ pages. She said her study gudies arent going to be what are on the test because shes here to educate us . Thus her study guide does not prove useful
Dr. Jackson doesn't give any good feedback. Gives you a study guide with topics, but by the time you answer every question it is 40+ pages. Also is very brief in class, but expects full detail that not even the textbook covers. Her tests are ridiculous and shes a really slow grader. Lab was good and helped reinforce some things learned in lecture
This professor is one of the most non-understanding , difficult professors to work with and communicate with. I would've gotten a B in the class but she screwed me over in the final lab report (gave me a 0) even though it was an A paper, just because it was a few min late. Awful prof, hope she gets fired
Dr. Jackson is a very educated professor but has absolutely no idea how to teach a course. Its her first semester (fall 2017) and she has no compassion for her students when test averages are in the 60s. She is very picky when it comes to what she likes on exams and lab reports. Her study guides are way to dense and her lectures are worthless.
Can be very intimidating at first, but she is very approachable in her office hours. Her lectures and review material is very dense, but the exams make up a small part of the total grade. The class had low averages on tests, but a significant number of students were missing basic knowledge. Basically, this class has the best lab and an ok lecture.
Her lectures have nothing to do with material on the tests. Her study guides are absolutely ridiculous. Tests are extremely difficult, must read the book and do the study guide to even get an ok grade on the test. Only good thing is tests are 35% of your grade so even if you do poorly you can still get a B.
Either people were overharsh on prof jackson last semester, or she took the reviews to heart because this class was not bad at all. Tests are a small percentage of your total grade. The study guide she provides is VERY similar to her test. I never felt like anything she gave us was a surprise. Very fair grader, and super cool class.
my final exam study guide ended up being 54 pages, and nothing I expected was on the exam. Not clear on what material she expected and lectures could be set up differently so they are more engaging and interesting.
Basically she's okay. She really does teach the material and if you are careful to write down everything, then maybe you'll be fine. But you really need to work. If you are an engineer, you won't have time for this class and you will feel ridiculous about not getting you have worked for. Also, I'm pretty sure she makes up our test grades.
Dr. Jackson is a terrible lecturer, very particular about how she wants assignments done, and offers very little extra credit. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of overwhelming information. The basics were very rushed and encouraged memorization for tests rather than understanding topics. Her class made me feel incapable. Luckily, I love biology.
Dr. Jackson is very kind and tries her best to help students in office hours. The material felt rushed but its not her fault, her 190 section only had one lecture section two days a week while other biol courses had discussion days. She created helpful kahoots before every exam that covered similar material as the test. Other reviews are too harsh.
Everyone needs to cut her some slack. Dr. Jackson was a good teacher and cared for her students. She makes clear of what to expect from her, and is a fair grader. I was actually super nervous before taking her class because of the reviews on here. You have to study if you want a good grade. Brute memorization of her PowerPoints will get you an A.
The nice thing is her tests are only 35% of your grade. The bad news: She flies through her lecture slides without giving more detail as to each piece. Her tests are pretty hard. Her study guides are pretty much each lecture slide. I ended up doing poorly on the lab report, even though i followed the rubric well. She's smart but poor at teaching.
Do not be swayed by the 35% Your money maker is in the FINAL LAB REPORT
Emily Jackson is a very caring and considerate teacher. She really cares about the students who care about her class. So if you are looking for a good teacher who is going to give you a great knowledge and foundation of microbiology, then take her class. Tests are challenging but well represent what you learn in class. Overall Great teacher!
She is a hard grader but I mean this isn't suppose to be an easy A class. tests are only worth 35% of your grade so don't sweat it you can still pass if you do poorly on two. other material will balance it out. She is a carrying professor. Study the study guides and the learning catalytics. Tests are challenging but not brutal. She's super caring!
Everyone complaining on here either did not show up to class or not study. This class was not as difficult as people are making it seem. It is not an easy A but it is doable. Study her study guides for exams. I advice filling them out as she lectures. The FINAL LAB REPORT will determine what your final grade is. Just follow the rubric she gives.
She's absolutely the worst professor I have ever taken. This is coming from a senior who is graduating with a 3.8 GPA and has seen all kinds of professors. I've taken classes so much more difficult than this but she is one of a kind. She purposely makes exams as hard as possible and forces learning catalytics down our throats. Horrible professor
Dr. Jackson is very good at her job. She makes lectures interesting by adding in activities, which really help for understanding the material. There's a lot of work, but all of it serves a purpose. If you complete everything with care and go to class, the tests shouldn't be an issue, especially since she posts decent study guides.
Extremely picky when it comes to grading. This especially pertains to papers and article reviews. She will give a custom grade of 1.75 if there is a prompt out of 2 for not exceeding the questions parameters.
Take into consideration how much time and knowledge you will inevitably have to put into Professor Jackson's class. I came into this class with AP Bio (passed with 3). I struggled with Biology then and did throughout this course, although identical concepts. Extremely harsh grader, make sure to STUDY, get the hang of her style and know concepts.
Emily is the hardest professor i've ever had. I'm usually a 4.0 student and struggled to get a n 88 in her class. She is a very harsh grader on her exams and her lab reports. My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure you use her learning objectives as your study guide for her exams. The final is cumulative.
Dr. Jackson is not a professor; she is a Lecturer II. There is a reason for that. Having a PhD does not make someone an effective teacher. She is an overly harsh grader, particularly considering that micro is a 200-level class, and will mark points from some reports but not others for the same exact errors. She is appalling; don't waste your time.
If you must take this class from Emily don't bother going to lecture. The LC can be done remotely, and her lectures lack information that's consistent with homework/exam Qs. Spend your time wisely and read the book or work practice problems instead. No one in our class of 200+ people got full points on either of the two lab reports. She's awful.
I've never encountered such an unhelpful professor. It isn't difficult material. It is made difficult by Dr. Jackson because she doesn't seem to want students to succeed. Witnessed her tell a student that she wasn't available to see her at any time outside of office hours over a week before the final even though the student had class. Don't bother!
Take this class from literally anyone else in the entire world if you can. PS the answer to the transformation lab is satellite colonies, since you will never review this material in class/lab/assigned reading/homework. Accept in advance that you will never receive full marks on anything Dr. Jackson grades no matter what level of effort you put in
Do NOT take a class from Dr. Jackson. She has at least one huge typo in her $45 lab notebook (completely switches Gram negative and positive bacteria) yet will practically mark points from students' work for using the word "the" too many times. Unreasonably critical. My biggest piece of advice is to wait and take it from someone else if you can.
One of the worst professors at UNR in my opinion. I am a senior majoring in bio/minoring in chem w/ a 4.0 GPA and fought for an A. She is impossible to communicate with. All exams have some level of cumulativeness/can't miss more than three LECTURES or she'll give you a W/extremely harsh grader/labs are fun but not worth taking the class from her
Labs are what kill most people. She grades them SO hard but doesn't really give good background or detailed expectations. Pretty easy class if you show up and study LC and mastering biology for tests. Almost got a B but labs brought me down a lot. Also does a lot of trick questions for LC which is REALLY frustrating since they're graded
While I think Dr. Jackson is a good professor, I think she grades way too harshly on her lab reports. This class was a LOT of work between lab, homework, studying etc.
Key to success: study her *learning objectives* & the *online homework* for exams. Glance over the slides too, if you can. Beware of her true/false. Might have a short answer based on something she said in class or from labs. Didn't bother reading the textbook or doing any review problems. Lab reports are graded harshly - be super objective.
She's the WORST lecturer I've ever had in my 3 years here and it's clear that I'm not the only one who thinks so. All she does is read off the slides and moves on. She spends approx. < 1 min/ slide. Her exams are much more in depth than what she says. You'll end up teaching yourself. Her averages- TERRIBLE. She grades like it's a 400 level class.
Would not recommend her class. Lectures were are very dry and slides do not have detailed info, so be ready to write. Is an unfair grader and expects students to be experts in this subject. The labs and homework is the only thing that is keeping my grade at a B. The exams have many trick questions. If you want to do well you have to study a lot.
You really don't need to open the book, memorize her slides and you'll be fine. LC questions every day so go to class. Final was easier than expected, she reused homework and LC questions. Lab was pretty fun most days. However, her lab report grading is very questionable. She really reaches to take off any points she can.
She uses learning catalytics for attendance. Lab is fun, not very challenging. Exams are somewhat cumulative, use LC, homework, & learning objectives to study. There are two lab reports with unclear criteria, and she grades very harshly on them. She makes what could be an interesting class unnecessarily difficult.
I hated this class. She is very unclear about grading and is VERY particular, especially with the paper (honors). Overall be prepared to do a lot more work than is really necessary to learn the material. I felt like she made the class way harder than it needed to be. She also was not very accommodating when we had to switch online due to COVID.
10/10 would NOT recommend! She says your lab report is great during office hrs & grades it a B-. Your grade PLUMMETS. Your grade will barely move up unless you ace the test and only like 2 of us in the class get an A. Tests are difficult w/multiple right answers. Everyone in our class group chat was fed up and over this class. Teaching style: poor.
If you have the opportunity to take this class from someone else, do it. It's like her class is the only thing that matters in your life and she will have plenty of assignments to show you this. Multiple correct answer exams/HW/LC/Labs. Lab reports are graded harshly. Her overall connotation and affect towards students is deflating/discouraging.
The microbiology class was interesting but she just read off her slides during lectures. There is a lot of BUSY WORK with mastering assignments, dynamic study modules, lab quizzes, and lab reports. The lab report rubrics were dense but were not specific enough to know exactly what she is looking for, so it's easy to lose a lot of point on reports
Please find another professor for this class. Her lectures are dry, shes unclear with her instructions, gets overwhelmed when we ask questions/need help, and isn't flexible nor understanding of her students (Covid mind you). She requires an overwhelming amount of work for just a 200+ level class and is ruthless in her grading despite being vague.
Dr. Jackson teaches Micro and she is very sweet and has tried her best to do what she can with going online with COVID. The only issue was that she would record her lectures but then never post them unless there was audio issues and even then the audio issues were being recorded so it wasn't much help. Overall she was a good professor!
The worst lecturer I've had at UNR - laughs inappropriately, moves erratically / rocks back and forth on Zoom (highly distracting), doesn't seem to be able to emotionally handle going "off script" with questions, finds any reason to take off points in your reports and applied micro assignments. Just NO. Take this class at TMCC if you can.
She's passionate about micro, knowledgeable and aims high for her students. Her class is set up with lab reports and homework to make it more manageable to get a good grade. You can get C's on exams and still get an A in the class with out it's set up. USE HER OFFICE HOURS! Very helpful and will answer lots of questions. Loved her class
Dr. Jackson is so sweet and knowledgeable. She is quick to answer emails asking q's & her class is not as hard as these ratings imply. I think if there were issues in the past, she listened to feedback and made improvements. I could literally get less than a fifty percent on the final and still have an A. You earn your grade, she's more than fair
Her lectures are just alright, but attending lecture is important for attendance points. Definitely study and pay attention to learning objectives! The tests ask very tricky questions! She's a nitpicky grader when it comes to labs and the lab reports, and slow with releasing test grades. But overall, she's okay.
Dr. Jackson is very nice and willing to work with you. That said, it feels like this class is much harder than it should be. There are MANY assignments due throughout the semester, and she is very picky about how you answer questions. Tests felt almost impossible, even when you study. No extra credit, and no rounding on grades or curving on tests.
Dr. Jackson is clearly knowledgeable about the subject of microbiology. However, being knowledgeable doesn't make you a good lecturer and it shows. Her lectures were just ok and meh. Lots of busy work with regular homeworks, 4 exams, and 2 lab reports. Her grading on the exams and lab reports are extremely particular and the final is cumulative.
Lots of homework that were only worth a few points each so good grades did nothing while skipping them would kill your grade. If you skip one class then your grade plummets. She drops two quizzes but it's not enough if you're out sick or don't do well on the ones you're present for.She allows notes on only two tests and drops one but not on big tests
Dr. Jackson is one the best professors I've had. The tests are cumulative as the semester goes on, but a good study guide are the learning objectives. Dr. Jackson is very easy to get ahold of and extremely caring of student's circumstances and concerns. I would easily take her again!
Microbiology is a difficult subject but she is a good professor. Her lectures can be boring and she grades harshly on exams and the 2 lab reports, but if you put in the work to try and get good scores on the Homework and DSM's, you will do fine. You could get a D on all the exams and pass. The lab is super fun (depends on the TA) and I enjoyed it.
Emily Jackson is by far the worst professor I have ever taken. She very clearly wants her students to fail. There is another biology class which the teaching assistants and students say is much easier. Being a new bio teacher, Jackson purposefully makes her exams and quizzes extremely difficult, and the average per exam was around 50%.
BIO 189: worst class I've ever taken at UNR. She does not want her students to succeed. Makes the exams unreasonably difficult even when other classes taking the same course have much easier tests, with other professors. A lot of homework assigned that is only worth like 2 points. Material would be learned more efficiently with another professor.
Despite negative ratings, Professor Jackson's teaching was effective. I spent 10-30 mins weekly on homework and an hour before exams, earning an easy A. Her module notes on Canvas greatly aided exam preparation and understanding.
There are a LOT of assignments in her class. It feels like a lot of work ( and it is) but it makes it so that you can do poorly on all of her tests and still be able to pass with a C or a B. To study for exams, she expects you to memorize all of the learning outcomes, but there are so many that it is overwhelming and hard to learn everything.
Very monotone and difficult class
I don't understand why she refuses to post a study guide. She's not very helpful. Studying for exams was difficult for me. I would study the learning objectives but they didn't seem to prepare me for the test questions. I really didn't like this class.
Very Unprofessional. Dr. Jackson has shown that she does not have the cadence of others in her field. Five times have I attempted to reach her outside of the classroom, and I received not a single response. If you are taking this class, most likely you NEED TO. In that case, you NEED TO fight for your grade. Good luck.
Honestly one of the worst professors at unr! She has an overwhelming amount of PowerPoint slides that usually just has pictures and a few words. She would try to "explain" each lecture in class but she did it in such a poor and quick manner you wouldn't be able to understand what she is actually "teaching".
She is mean and doesn't care about her students. You take a quiz every class for 5 points and you have daily learning catalytic questions you have to answer correctly for points. No extra credit and she doesn't explain anything. Literally don't take her class ever if possible. She just reads off her slides.
Please for the love of god take any class with her at another school to even have a fair chance at a good grade. She wants her students to fail. You could do everything correct and almost perfect, but if it is not exactly how she would write it, she fails you. She made an already difficult course as is 1000x harder for absolutely no reason.
Avoid taking Dr. Jackson at all costs
Hands down the worst professor I've ever taken. She is so disengaging in lecture and makes exams so hard. Her slides are the opposite of informative and often have 2 word bullet points with no explanation. She grades all the lab reports so harshly and opposite to the rubric. Take MICR276 instead if you want a good grade
Usually an A student but ended up with an 88%. An 89.99% is a B, not an B+ or A-. She tries her best to take points away from you at any instance. Doesn't give tests back or have any type of structured review. No curve, no extra credit. You can work very hard for a good grade but she loves trick questions. Bad professor overall!
Never take her. I am 3% away from passing and she will not grant me that. Now I have to do it all again next semester. I have never failed a class in my life ever and this is the first one thats given me trouble but not because of the subject. She does not care if you know the content or not. She does not care about any of her students.
Emily Jackson is a good person, but horrible at teaching. She does make it clear in the beginning how the class is gonna go so beware she means what the syllabus says. You're gonna teach yourself this whole class too. I will say, she gave so much extra credit for final grades, which saved me from not passing. Go to SI sessions and bio help center!!
Writing this, because it's best to write before your done because most of these ratings are probably retaliatory and just generally salty. So far class is very easy indeed. But It wouldn't be if one didn't study. You won't pass this class if you don't put the work in
Y'all are some haters who clearly didn't do well in class. If you don't study or participate you won't do well. Dr. Jackson is very clear about her expectations of the class, and participation matters. She offers so many oppurtunites to boost your grade. She's extremely knowledgable, go to her office hours, they're great. Just do your work and try.
Despite all of the negative reviews on here, she is actually a good professor, if you study you will pass, simple as that. Look at her notes that she posts on canvas! Also go to the SI sessions and get help from your LA and you will be fine
prof jackson is extremely cocky. she does literally anything she can to take away points, made the TAs REGRADE our lab reports because the average was too high. although her teaching isn't awful, her expectations are way too high for an intro micro class. if u are lucky enough to take someone else u should!!!!
She is a cool person but not a good professor. She makes her exams very hard with written portions and is not very clear on her expectations and study guides are VERY UNCLEAR. She took away off points on lab reports because too many students did well. She does not want you to get a good grade, she wants to humble you.
She is the worst. Doesn't care about her students and will give you a bunch of random assignments for no reason. You have to go to class as she does a bunch of in-class questions for points. Her tests are hard, and her lectures are boring and don't ever match the tests. DO NOT take her class if you don't have to.
Honestly, Dr. Jackson isn't that bad of a lecturer (at least for regular biology), and I quite enjoyed her class. She gives extra credit on the exams if you do the practice problems on Pearson, along with extra credit sometimes on the pop quizzes before she starts class. Follow along with the note outlines and take thorough notes on the homework.
Dr. Jackson is without a doubt one of my favorite professors. She is extremely helpful, but you have to communicate your needs with her before a deadline. This course is definitely challenging and Dr. J tries her best to explain things as best as she can. Definitely get help as early as possible if you're struggling, and pay attention to deadlines!
Micro is a weeder class, meaning it weeds out students who aren't well equipped for future harder classes, such as nursing, pre-med, and PA students. If you read these reviews and are scared of taking Dr. Jackson, just know that the people who rated her low are just pissed off they didn't get an A and had to work harder than normal.
She has heavy lectures & makes the exams very wordy and confusing. I had difficulty with her exams so beware they are hard. She also doesn't allow group quizzes. Attend class and don't miss. She has in class questions that are worth points. Extra credit is available for exams included in Pearson and SI sessions. You will need to teach yourself
Putting it bluntly...Jackson is a terrible professor. She does not care about her students. There are no chances of doing missing assignments, even if there's a medical emergency. She spends lectures just reading from her slides. The exams are insanely hard. No study Guide. No redos of any kind. 10/10 DO NOT recommend this professor.
Dr. Jackson is great! The class is structured very well where we get A LOT of opportunities for extra credit. A lot of pop quizzes but she often puts an EC question on there. She is very nice and helpful during her office hours so go to them! Your grade for this class is respective to the amount of time you put into it so don't slack off!
THIS CLASS WILL TAKE ALL OF YOUR SANITY AND SELF RESPECT AND DUMP IT IN THE TRASH. THIS IS A GENERAL MICRO COURSE AND I TRULY BELIEVE SHE IS UPSET ABOUT TEACHING A 200 LEVEL COURSE SO SHE TAKES IT OUT ON HER STUDENTS. SHE TEACHES AS IF SHE IS BEING HELD AT GUN POINT AND THERE IS NO JOY IN HER LIFE EXCEPT FOR FAILING STUDENTS.
I was pretty scared for this class cuz of these reviews, but she is NOT that bad at all. Notecard can be used for all 4 tests, including the final. I wrote SO much on these things that helped like quiz questions, and every learning objective. The quizzes almost every day were the worst part abt that class. Lectures r boring and she is a bit dry.
Look, just accept the fact that she is a horrible professor. She has a boulder sized chip on her shoulder for absolutely no reason and it is honestly just sad. Memorize the slides and put in the work, this is one of those classes that you just have to work through despite the fact that she will be the worst professor you'll get at this college.
Dr. Jackson is very kind. This course is packed full of information. Use the learning objectives to study. Test 2 will be incredible difficult in comparison to the others. Really try on the papers, go to lab, and get your homework done. Take this class just because no matter what, with a decent ammount of effort, you can get a decent grade.
whatever you do just do not take her
Tests are extremely confusing. No study guides, pretty much just have to rely on her long lectures (that she rushes through with no acknowledgment of her students). really just have to teach yourself. note guides DO NOT go hand in hand with the lectures, so youre jumping around and its just so confusing. feels like she wants you to fail.
Dr. Jackson is a really amazing professor, if you go to her office hours and the SI sessions you will have no problem. You're able to bring in a notecard to the exams, and there's lots of extra credit opportunities given. At times she can seem harsh, but it's because she wants the best for you. Watch the videos on the modules page and write notes.
I took this class alongside BIOL 223 (Anatomy) and I also had a total of 17 credits. I'm still able to get an A even if I get a C on the final. If you are a hard worker and put in the time, she is not this "evil" professor everyone paints her out to be. She is super kind in her OH, only thing I was really scared of was lab reports. You'll be fine.
Attendance is mandatory because before the class starts you need to take the quiz of what you guys talked about last class. Her exam is soooo difficult like you have cheatsheet but it feels like it wasn't even helping. She doesn't even provide test guide so it's hard to know what specific topic you need to study for the test.
