Terrible. Just terrible.
She is very interesting and fun, definitely my favorite professor thus far. Explains assignments very clearly and reminds you about extra credit due dates and test dates at the beginning of classes. You have to go to class because she gives activities randomly for points. Tests are straightforward, must do the reading though.
I absolutely HATED her class. Her tests weren't too bad, but when it came to writing research papers, she wasn't very helpful at all. She was easy enough to talk to, she didn't give us as much help as I would have liked.
I loved her class!! She was so fun and I learned a lot!!
This class was really hard and time consuming, but I learned a lot about writing papers. She tried to make it as fun and interesting as possible. It is a required course for psych majors, so if you have to take it, take Dr. Keener's section.
I love Dr. Keener. Her class is so fun that the time just flies by. You have to read the book and study to do well on exams, but hey this IS college, right?
lots of work, but you learn a lot, easy to talk to, makes class fun
def take her. Dr. Keener made class fun. She shows lots of videos. lots of extra credit, but have to read the book for exams
She makes her assignment intsructions very clear. She provides study guides and online help, such as MyPsych Lab. Her thirty points extra credit is immensely helpful. She also provides relevant examples that can be remembered.
Nice person, but by no means a teacher. I don't see how she can have a Phd and know so little about general psych.Very lazy prof.poorly prepared for class.
Basically, she is your average professor. The material isn't very detailed and it's covered pretty quickly in her presentations, so using my book for the main ideas to study for exams helped. The exams aren't that easy but there's enough easy work and extra credit to get a good grade.
my fav. learned a lot!!
She is a nice person! Just not a great teacher, her lectures really don't help to much with her test. There is also a lot of online work.
Her class is not really that hard. There are online quizzes for every chapter and there are only 3 exams during the year. The final is optional. Go to class to get the notes and know vocab from the book for exams. She also gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
Her lectures have nothing to do with what is on the tests. I studied the slides and read all the chapters 2 times and it didnt help me at test time at all. She is awful. Take another teacher if you can. I will never take her for a class EVER again. She is just a terrible teacher.
Very unorganized. Does not accept excuses for missed class for any reason, including doctor's excuses. Will deduct points for late homework either. The most condescending and unorganized professor I've ever had. Do not take her unless if you absolutely have to.
She is so rude. I brought a recruit to class and she flat out made it seem like she didnt want her there. After the recruit told me she would never take her after just one class. She doesn't teach at all and expects the book to do the teaching. I almost feel like she has no idea what she is doing. Gives pointless homework assignments. Don'ttakeher
She was a terrible professor. She was utterly unhelpful and she didn't know the material very well. I taught myself most of the material.
Awful professor...she explains materials the way you would explain it to elementary school students. Very condescending towards students and did not teach very well. Reads straight from powerpoint slides and skips over lots of material. Grading guidelines for paper is very unclear. Nice person, not a very good professor.
Awful teacher! Didn't explain things well at all and when she tried to explain things, she would talk to you like you were in 5th grade and wouldn't understand her any other way. Has a power complex bc she is a teacher and controls grades, she thinks she can say or do whatever she wants. I did well in the class but only bc I taught myself it.
Extremely lazy, and hardly prepared for classes. She asks students questions more than students ask her questions. Hardly knows material without her notes, and her notes are straight from the book. The material for exams isn't difficult, but she somehow makes the exams very tricky. Half the students are smarter than she is.
Horrible. Lazy and hardly knows what she is teaching. Refuses to round grades or help students out when they are right on the border of a grade. Hardly knew what my grade was all semester as she waits till the end to grade anything. Received no feedback on exams or any other assignment I turned in. Seriously, do not take a class with her.
My favorite teacher ever! She works hard to help us learn. Her lectures are fun and I learned a lot!
Honestly Keener made me begin to dislike psychology. She treated my intro class like we were still in high school and she would continue to tell my first seminar class that we shouldn't expect to make a lot of money with a psychology major. Everything she taught was straight from the book so as long as you read you could do well.
Dr. Keener assumes that everyone in her class is a freshman, which is really annoying if you're not--get ready to hear about "note taking skills" and "adjusting to college" all semester. However, her class is easy as long as you take the online quizzes (straight from the book) and show up to get your participation points.
She takes this class til seriously for something that's not even all majors. She grades far too harshly. You will read the entire book. You have to show up. Even doing this will still lead to bad tests. Extra credit is needed to do okay. Not clear about anything. Tests cover material she didn't. Chances are you'll get a B or lower.
I took her Psychology go Gender class and it was amazing. If you read a chapter every week and show up to class, you won't fail. The class is really interesting and the professor is passionate. You'll have a small presentation to make, and if you put some work into it you'll succeed for sure. Highly recommended! Take it!
I personally did not have any issues with her, but I know some people do. Most tests are done online and I thought they were pretty easy.
Does not grade in a timely matter and teaching is very disorganized which leads to information being disorganized!
Ha. Had her 2 semesters ago. Completely unreliable n unorganized. Rude any time you ask a question, because she doesn't clarify anything she says n contradicts everything then blames it on her students. Not even a good professor really. Makes everyone out to be lazy having bad attitudes when it's really her... I just don't get it
you can miss up to three classes but i suggest you try not to miss any because she just reads off a power point and then explains a little but the exams are a lot harder if youre not in class. also you have to have the book because you use it a lot.
Dr. Keener reminded me off my Psychology teacher in high school, rough. She reads off of the powerpoint for every class, and when you ask a question she usually just brushes you off. Really nice lady if you get on her good side, and can be funny. I only passed because I had priorly taken Psych.
Dr. Keener seems enthusiastic about the material. The tests aren't bad if you pay attention in class. She also offers bonus opportunities throughout the semester. Dr. Keener makes it clear not to ask her about grades - if you do she gets confused with other classes so just follow the syllabus. Just be prepared to read the book and do the homework.
amazing that this woman has earned a phd. one of the least educated lecturers i've ever had the misfortune of having, and i was never even on her bad side. most of the time she came up with her extra credit ideas on the spot, one of which i can remember she told us to lucid dream then write about it in a paper. not a smart person by any means.
Dr, Keener is wonderful. Some people may not like her, personally, I think it is because she doesn't baby her classes. She explains her instructions and what she expects. If you put effort into her class, she WILL help you. I wish I could take more of her classes this coming semester. Grades are fair and you are given lots of opportunity for points
If your an academic and strive for knowledge, then avoid Keener at all costs in your college career. She only will do what is explicitly stated in her contract and nothing more. This phenomena is a sad state of affairs being seen in academia.
Do not take this professor.
This class was pretty challenging as far as the exams went. She will include videos and discussions from class over the course of several chapters, but there are opportunities to make up for lost points. You need to be willing to do what it takes for it though. There is one group project you will have at the beginning of the year that's pretty easy
Took "Women, Gender, and Culture" (& others) class had so much potential and she ruined it with her lack of personal education, gave inaccurate information. We literally watched documentaries every single class. She had no idea how to teach this course and it was very disappointing as well as a compromise to my education. I would not recommend.
Keener was an OK psych professor. If you haven't taken an AP psychology course before, she does an good job at explaining the different concepts we learned. For me, taking this class was very easy due to taking the AP psych course, but her detailed explanations were rambly since I already learned this information before.
Dr. Keener was a great intro to psych prof. She was pretty clear of what was expected of you as a student. She offers numerous opportunities its for extra credit. She does a good job of relating material to real life. Youve definitely got to work for your grade but its manageable.
Dr. Keener is a wonderful Professor! She does a very good job at explaining everything and uses videos, speakers, and other things to help her students further understand the concepts. Her class is set up that she lectures and there is discussion within the lectures. Extra credit is offered! She is willing to help all you have to do is talk to her.
Ive taken a few classes with her. Shes extremely opinionated. Many of her claims rely on reality tv and social media rather than academic sources. The book is the answer for everything; dont bother asking her because she will tell you to look in the book or online. Acts like she works harder than she does; she has every one else do her work.
Had Keener for Intro to Psych. Hated every minute of her class, she likes to use her class as more of a way to talk about sexuality more than psychology itself. Just reads off the slides and then decides to make her tests all application questions. I truly hated this class so much that I changed my major. Use access code instead of book.
Lectures are exactly what the exams are on, all intro to psych exams are multiple choice. You need to watch the videos she says to because there will be questions on them. Shes an amazing prof and gives a lot of chances for extra credit.
worst hing is, she doesn't allow ANY electronics PERIOD. so if you have ADHD like me and can't take notes well on paper and need to type to focus and adapt, you're screwed. also even looking at your phone loss of points. however the class isn't too tough. she talk endlessly up until the second class is over but she's nice and patient
My least favorite professor Ive had. She makes lectures mandatory, but you cant learn anything because she is terrible at explaining & talks in circles. You have to start studying from the book a week prior bc the exam is nothing like her lectures. Dont take.
Sucks at teaching.
She is awesome!! She works to give students a lot of chances to learn. If you don't put out any effort, that's on you!
Survived, yet I learned nothing. Worst class I've taken at Slippery Rock. If it wasn't mandatory I would have dropped. If you would like to learn how to doubt your self-efficacy and question whether college is a waste of time and money, then take this class. Otherwise, don't.
very boring. 4 exams, but takes off your lowest grade. lots of bonus points.
Doesnt accept doctors notes for anything at all! However she does have this thing when you do bad on an exam you can decide to drop it entirely and take the optional final.
She's not the worst, but she gets off topic a LOT. She's also super strict about electronics, especially phones. Fair warning: do not, I repeat, DO NOT pack up early because she will call you out in front of the whole class
Honestly she is pretty cool except no electronics or packing up early. She does get off topic way too much. You have to pay attention to her during lectures because her powerpoints lack information.
Great person to talk to but not academically. I can't blame her too much since our classes have been online which can cause a shift in teaching methods. However, I expect to have some takeaways after lectures. I feel as though I'm teaching myself almost one hundred percent of the time. The rating isn't personal, just business.
Very nice and easy to get along with, just does not have a good teaching style at all. Nothing personal, just business.
Absolutely terrible. I understand everything is shifted to online, but the least she could do is teach. No information to take away from lectures. No point in even holding class. Doesnt grade on time or efficiently. Im teaching myself.
I have had to take classes with Keener many times and they keep getting worse. She is the least qualified individual to teach ever. She has no idea what she's talking about and can never correctly answer questions. She did not lecture at all, we only watched youtube videos and did busy work. Do your best not to take any of her classes.
I got an A on all homework and tests, yet still ended up with a C because half the grade is based on group work. If you have a bad group who doesnt show up or know what theyre doing, youre screwed. You cant even choose your group so you just have to hope you get a good one. Very unclear with assignments and off topic lectures.
I absolutely love their personality and how they teach the class. They are reliable and you always know what you're going to be doing in class that day. 10/10
Lectures were only done 1 day out of the week, she would talk about her opinions for 15-20 minutes of that time. She will want you to take notes during lectures but tell you to focus primarily on her and not your notes when you try to. She put no effort into teaching the content. Can't answer simple yes or no questions. Would not recommend it.
I would never ever take another class with Keener being my professor . Very judgmental and constantly talks about covid and the worlds issues. Gets extremely off topic and wastes class lecture time. I feel like I wasted my money on this class because i didnt learn anything. Lectures were literally only 2 slides then talked about covid.
PLEASE DONT TAKE PSYC232 WITH KEENER. They are the worst. Literally don't do anything. Makes the student assistant teach the entire class while Keener just sits there and doesn't even know whats going on in the class. Doesn't even know due dates for her own class, has to ask the assistant. Then comes in at the end and fails you on the paper.
DO NOT TAKE! lazy, and asks their assistants to do everything, including respond to student emails- never responds themselves. told us that responding to us is a chore.. A lot of group work in this class, including a group essay, so if you get a bad group you're screwed! Perusall is awful and required. they're very rude. Late to their own classes
They were an ok professor. Made their assistant do the majority of the work and didn't do much outside of doing slides. tests were not super difficult as long as you knew the basic concepts. I never studied and my lowest grade was an 80. Not too difficult however the group project is the worst. Made their assent help when group member wouldn't work
This class is by no means difficult. They give out extra credit opportunities and are pretty laid back. If you have any questions or need to email, you need to ask the student assistant. Exams are based on the slides, don't bother using Perusall to study. They are normally late to class and gets side tracked easily
Dr. Keener was a just "ok" prof. They were not the most assessable and while they did teach the material decently well, they felt the need to interject their personal beliefs into EVERYTHING. The TA did most of the work. Dr. Keener would forward most emails to the TA to deal with. Was just ok at teaching, and would not NEVER take again.
Not the worst professor but not the best. She is very unorganized but her lectures were very enjoyable and easy to pay attention to. Tests were generally easy as long as you read and follow the study guide. The group project was the worst part and that wasn't even bad. Offers a lot of extra credit as well.
Dr. Keener was a nice professor. They have a solid knowledge of psychology and an interesting class, although I don't love the teaching style the best. They seem a bit lazy being honest, make the TA do a lot and play videos a lot.
Dr.Keener is very nice and their class is relatively easy to pass in my perspective. All you have to do in show up to class and do the assignments you're given.
Dr. Keener is a good lecturer and explains concepts in a way that is easy to understand. They give out multiple resources for each test and for the group project, so if you read through those you should get a good grade. The only somewhat bad thing I noticed is that they rely on the TA a lot and class is chaotic and rushed when the TA is not there.
I did not have a difficult time with them, although it is a lot of work involved within her class. There will be a lot of reading. Be sure to pay attention during the lectures during class! She gives many opportunities for extra credit. They usually do not respond to emails, which causes some frustration.
Cant take notes on your laptop as it "distracts her", she prints out the slides and gives it to you to take notes on, then she talks on and on about the topics while you sit there and stare at her blankly. Her class is boring and you will struggle for an hour and a half to stay awake. And concept reviews should be optional with fewer questions.
Reasons why I don't recommend Dr. Keener - They are unorganized and technologically inept. - They miscommunicate due dates/exam days - They're always late to class and holds students over because of it - They grade hard even though they don't go over the requirements of assignments - They don't allow phones or computers in class
HSB is a good class and despite what people say, Dr. Keener is a good professor. They are respectful of students. Perusall readings are very important to the class (one every week), so keep up with those. Exams are straightforward if you study. The group project is very fun and topics are informative. I would take classes taught by them again!
I had Keener for psyc 105 and psyc 231. I was clueless in both classes because Keener does not teach, respond to emails, and relies heavily on the TA. You have no guidance for exams and are not given a study guide. You don't learn anything that's on the exams in class. Keener is not a good professor and extremely difficult. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Keener is not a good professor and if you do get them, please be aware and go to the TA. Dr. Keener will not teach you anything and does not care about your grade.
Dr. Keener was difficult for me to learn from. There is lot to know and the work load is heavy. Not allowed to take notes in her class unless you do it her way. I appreciated the variety of ways to earn points, but exams were extremely difficult.
The grading is not clear at all and all her lectures are confusing.
The course was relatively easy to understand. The homework assignments were very light, however the instructions for SPSS labs could sometimes be confusing. The final lab report instructions were very plain and could easily be confusing. However she was very helpful if you needed assistance.
Keener was just not a good professor in general. They never answer their email and make their student assistant do everything. They don't really clarify how things will be graded and willl never warn you if there's a test or project due. They were also super mean
Dr. Keener is a tough professor who is extremely lecture-heavy and does not clarify expectations. Group work is a huge part of her class, and points will be taken off if things are not done perfectly. Her exams are not extremely difficult, as she allows for a cheat sheet on them, but her overall demeanor makes the class difficult.
Rude. Passive-aggressive. Unclear. Stresses most of your grade on group work. She treats college kids like they're in an elementary school and lectures us like she's our mom or something. Overall very rude and do not recommend her. She also reads straight off the slides, so she makes attendance mandatory. Otherwise, no one would come to class.
Respectfully, avoid if possible.
this class was terrible. dr keener never answered their email or any real questions in class, they often made their assistant do their job for them. they also seemed to have a strange prejudice against male students, to the point where i even noticed as a female. they gave little to no personal feedback and would often just dance around questions.
She does not even teach and makes you watch the lectures that are 30min long outside of class and you still have to go to class for the full class time. She is a very hard grader and does not give good feedback. Her exams are tough and do not line up with the course work. There are fill in the blank and 6 open ended questions on exams.
Often pushing their own personal narrative of ideals and saying offensive things (in my opinion). Came off as arrogant and passive aggressive toward students. The class itself was okay, but the lectures were taught far too slow to learn all the content. Do not check the time on your phone or computer or they will call you out for using technology.
Dr. Keener is my biggest op for real. Nothing else needs to be said.
Just don't take her, avoid it, trust please.
their lecture was just filled with them reading off slides and not agreeing with half the stuff that on the slides and then answering questions that weren't related to the topic or they would just start rambling with another student. their communication wasn't great either. they often made things seem hard than they were and caused a lot of stress.
Dr. Keener is a very harsh grader who doesn't give back timely or helpful feedback. Exams have questions that are hardly covered in class. Lectures are very boring and opinionated, and attendance is mandatory. I have had several classes with Keener and haven't enjoyed a single one.
Personally I believe that if you want to succeed in your undergrad you should refrain from partaking in Dr. Keener's courses. If you want to struggle and question your major, continue taking Dr. Keener's courses.
all I have to say is keener made me change my major. that's how much I recommend not taking a keener class.
Shame bc content is interesting, she barely answers her email, TA does all work and puts most grades in. Gives 30 question tests from 4 page study guides, skips textbook/lecture/test content to read irrelevant info to the class. She skips over lecture slides, says anything she has ever shown in class/talked about is fair game on the tests.
She's the worst, literally THE. WORST. That's the nicest thing I can day about her. Avoid at all costs.
Keener is an awful professor. Their classes are interesting in content but often just taught by reading words off of slides and making jokes that don't land. God forbid you touch your phone or have an airpod in. They also rely mostly on the teacher assistant to grade the few assignments given. If you don't mind annotating Perusall you'll be fine.
don't do it.
Dr. Keener can be nice enough, but not the greatest professor. Impossible to reach outside of class, doesn't clearly answer questions, literally INTERRUPTS students after calling on them to answer/participate in a discussion (frequent issue), whole semester is dedicated to a group project with very little instructions, takes eons to grade. avoid
genuinely awful. do not take this class with keener if you have the option
For an elective this class genuinely is really tricky. She mostly relies on the TA and tests basically come straight from the book. Group projects are always assigned. She is usually not helpful and is a tough grader on the final project. Always attend class cause although it's not mandatory, she grades you on "participation." Final exam optional.
I absolutely can not stand this woman. I think they need to spend less time worrying about their identity and worry more about how incompetent of a teacher they are. First off she gives us a video to write about every Tuesday then on Thursday we barley cover the topic and move on to t
I absolutely cannot stand this woman. They need to spend less time focusing on their gender and more time reflecting about their incompetent teaching. She gives you this software site that's hard to navigate. In the final paper I've had multiple sources check it and said it was an excellent paper. She told me there was no hard work put into it.
