Prof. Machen is a very good professor who cares about her students. She is really into what she teaches and she knows a lot. That being said, she made the class very tough even for students who are good at the subject. Not too much homework really, but the essay tests are tough. They are broad questions and then she grades them hard.
Class is hard to be and at pay attention at 8 am. All lecture not too much participation. Gives out study guide before test. Grades essays on tests hard but MC and Matching aren't too bad if you study. 3 books, 2 tests and 1 paper over them. Grades paper relatively easy. Not a Humanities class that can be walked through like some others.
Really nice. easy lectures. easy to talk to. tests are sort of hard but gives a study guide. makes material easy to understand. had to retake class and did a TON better than with Lyftdog
Not too much homework, never use the book. She's really nice and easy to talk to if you have questions.
Despite the rating of others, she is a really good teacher and the class isn't very hard. I took her lec/disc class and she made it really interesting. There is a lot of reading tho so b prepared. She makes u write a paper with every exam, focus more on paper than exam, bc paper worth 100pts. She grades it tough tho. Otherwise no probs!
Had her twice. I would recommend taking her only if she's teaching a very large lecture section. You only get moderately difficult MC tests that way. In a smaller class you could get essays, which she grades unusually hard. Overall she's all right. Buy and use the book. Show up to class. Bring caffeine. Have patience. Like any other LAC class.
Machen is an awesome teacher, probably one of the best lecture teachers I have ever had. She keeps her classes pretty interested, spite i have her at 8am. Also 5 absences before she takes off for attendence, VERY good at lecture, tests are sorta hard but book quizes are pretty easy. just study for tests and you will do fine! AWESOME.
The lectures were very interesting and if you pay attention you will do fine on the tests. Reading the text will really help with passing the class with an A
great prof... loved her!!!
She rocks! If you go to class and take notes you will do fine. She is very helpful and willing to answer questions
She is a really good teachers. The class is all lectures, and she doesn't use power point, only to show you pictures. She gives a study guide before the tests and if you use that, then the test are easy. I was never good at remember this kind of stuff and I received a B in this class! TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!
Awesome! I am not a fan of history, but Machen made me enjoy learning, even if my class was at 8:00 in the morning! Her lectures were very interesting, and she spoke in our language so it was very easy for us to understand. If you know the study guide, you'll ace the test, simple as that. I would take any history class with her any day.
Loooved Machen! I'm a Junior now and she is probably my favorite professor, and I hated history. She makes it really interesting even if it was at 8am. Not very hard, I don't remember ever reading the books too much. She seems to remember me as a student even though it was 2 years ago that I had her, which is kind of nice. Definitely take!
She is a great teacher! I hate history, and she made it really interesting! I recommend her to everyone!
Way too smart for her own good! She's such a great professor. I came out of her class with lots of information.
I took Machen for European History. She was a good teacher. She was really passionate about the subject. A lot of the class periods were discussions about the reading. If you don't do the readings you will be lost in class. Good class and I learned a lot from Machen. It was fun to see the European perspective on World History
I took Machen for European History and for Women's History. Machen is an awesome professor! But be warned there is a lot of reading, and she started doing daily quizzes this semester, however it makes test WAY easier so you don't procrastinate as much. Great class!
I don't like Humanities and find history boring, but Machen made the class fun and explained the material in a way that student's could understand and enjoy it. The only thing is you take A LOT of notes--the class is completely lecture. There is one essay question on each test, rest is MC. You also have to read four books.
Best teacher i've ever had! I've never been a fan of history classes, but her European History class was my favorite. She is clearly enthusiastic about what she is doing, and makes it interesting for you. She's super chill, and will sit on the table cross legged and give her lecuture from there. LOTS of notes, but it's worth it. RECOMMEND
Machen keeps things real in class and teaches us by telling the history as if it was straight out of a story book! She is very affective and passionate about her work. I thoroughly enjoyed her class and highly recommend her for any Humanities class you may take!
BEST TEACHER EVER! She keeps things real in class and has a passion for what she teaches. She'll sit up on the desks in the room to give her lecture and tells the history as if it was a story which makes it a lot easier to understand! I highly recommend her!
HUMN III was a little shmeh, mostly b/c there's a ton of info to cover and the class is mostly lecture (not a ton of discussion). If you're unfamiliar with the subject, there's probably a lot to learn from her though! She's passionate, energetic, and friendly. The class easy, but the textbook is deathly dull. Overall, average class, fun teacher!
Awesome class! Considering I just took a western Civ class online over the summer this feels like review but she has such a passion for what she does! 8am cass on T/TH and it goes by FAST! Very entertaining :)
Loved her! As long as you go to class it's an easy class. Lots of note taking!!! The tests are easy though. You have to read a few short stories but they aren't too hard or long-can also spark note them. She is very energetic, passionate, and knowledgeable about this subject and can become tedious with all lecture but her energy makes it better.
Best teacher I have has so far at UNI. She is very passionate about what she teaches and teaches the class by telling history as a story and not in a boring text book way. Testes are not difficult if you study and take good notes in class. I was not interested in this class at all, but Machen made me really enjoy it and learn a lot.
One of the best professors! Teaches in a very interesting way. I had her at 8am but didn't mind at all! Highly recommend her!
With out a doubt the best prof I have ever had. Incredibly interesting and more than helpful if you ask her for it. Fairly easy if you attend class do the readings
Dr. Machen is incredibly nice and wants to help students. She is very knowledgeable and approachable.
Acts like we have a masters in history when it comes to writing papers. If you can, take a class with someone is not as strict of a grader. She also was not very approachable.
I absolutely loved professor Machen. She always had my attention with the material she cover. Very personable and funny. She made learning about history enjoyable. We read 5 books and everything on the study guides were on the tests. We also had to write an essay for each test but they weren't hard at all.
Wonderful professor. Very interesting tidbits that she would throw in to the lectures. The tests were very doable with no surprises. I'm a history major so I might be biased, but one of my favorite classes. Readings aren't essential (i rarely did them) but there are primary source questions on tests from the book. Loved her and the class.
Best class I've ever taken and I have never enjoyed a history class. She makes the class really enjoyable, makes you feel welcome, and is really approachable. The readings assigned are interesting and the work didn't feel like too much. I highly recommend taking class with her.
She's got great lectures and as long as you show up and take good notes you'll pass! The book quizzes she gave were a piece of cake and her actual tests are very easy if you look over the study guide she gives you! Not a tone of reading either. You'll miss out on her lectures if you skip so show up to class
I've never had a class where the lectures are 2 hours long and I actually enjoyed it... until I took Machen's class! She is down-to-earth and easy to talk to. I go to class everyday and take notes and if you do that you cannot fail her class. If you ask questions she's more than happy to explain topics more in depth without making you feel dumb
I loved Prof. Machen, her style is story telling, which makes it really interesting and easy. I took it in Summer which I thought it would be hard and boring, but it completely wasn't. I don't know about fall & spring classes but in Summer we had to read 2 stories, they are not that long. over all, I got out with a really good grade.
Lectures are very interesting and engaging. Dr. Machen has a bright personality and is extremely nice and receptive. Tests are multiple choice with an essay section which can be tough. Although there are lots of books and textbook chapters to read, a study guide is given and gone over. One of the best professors and educators I've ever had.
Professor Machen is the best teacher I've had at UNI. She is extremely approachable and wants everyone to do well. Her lectures are engaging and she teaches history through story telling. Really enjoyed this class.
Amazing professor! She's very enthusiastic about teaching, and cares about how each student does. Makes the class very interesting. One of the best professors I've had. There is a lot of reading, but that comes with any humanities course. Take her class if you can!!
Emily is a really great professor! I really loved her. She really cares about her students succeeding, and tries to make Humanities as easy on you as she can. Her lectures are storytelling, which keeps the class interested. She gives you study guides and is approachable with questions.
Makes a typically boring subject very interesting and long lectures incredibly tolerable.
She is an amazing professor! One of the best I've ever had. Her classes are lecture based but she keeps them interesting. She is also there to answer and questions because she is there to help you pass!
If you don't mind listening to a professor talk THE ENTIRE class period then you'll like Emily. She doesn't use power points or anything to help guide the class. Which made tests hard for me, since I found my self not taking the best notes. She's not my favorite, but she is very sweet.
Great lectures, never even needed to study for the tests as long as I paid attention in class. MUST read the primary sources in the textbook for the test, they are super easy though. I learned A LOT in this class and would definitely recommend to anyone!
Very nice, very smart. Attend the lectures and you will pass the tests.
Amazing professor. I've never been one for history but her lectures were so interesting a stimulating. She speack in a story telling manner. Not just what civilization conquered what and all about wars. Talked about daily life and interesting habits and behaviors of the culture. I learned so much and would definatly take another class from her.
She genuinely cares about your well-being and likes students. She is enthusiastic about her subject and knows a lot about WW2. Her classes are genuinely enjoyable especially if you like history.
Emily Machen is a FANTASTIC professor! I never missed class because I was excited to go. She makes it fun and interesting. She would be my first recommendation. The tests were easy, and there was little work outside of class besides studying and reading a few short books. Great class!
She is one of the best teachers as far as her lectures go. They are actually interesting and it feels like she is just storytelling. Her tests aren't an easy A, but if you listen in class and read the chapters, you can get A's on the tests. She is a good teacher.
Super interesting, super friendly, super easy on the eyes.
I absolutely loved this class! Dr. Machen is an amazing lecturer and she explains history in a way that everyone can understand. There are some book quizzes, but they aren't hard, and as long as you do the readings and pay attention in class, the tests aren't that bad either. Dr. Machen is funny, and I would definitely take this class again!
I would take Humanities III with her over again and again! Best professor and class experience I have ever had. You will not pass the class if you don't come as most test questions come from the lecture BUT her lectures are outstanding, interactive and engaging.
Great professor, interesting material, her lectures are really good and she keeps it light and interesting. Not a whole lot of reading either like most humanities classes.
Dr. Machen is an outstanding professor. You'll never have to memorize any dates and her lectures are really engaging. I found that I remembered most of the notes before I even started studying. Beware though, you must attend class as 99% of the material on the tests comes from lectures. Dr. Machen is one of the best humanities professors to take!
Dr. Machen does a great job about making history easy and relateable for non majors. Had open note tests so we could focus on learning instead of memorizing. She encouraged discussion and would show interesting pictures and videos. I learned a lot and had a decent time doing it.
Easy to listen to and very helpful.
Any humanities class is going to be a lot of lecture so prepare for that Emily does her best to make it enjoyable. She genuinely loves teaching this course and it shows. There are multiple book quizzes and a few exams. She doesn't do power point notes so be prepared to frantically write what she says. She is very nice and willing to help, take her!
If you like discussion classes TAKE THIS ONE! As long as you do the readings you will pass the class. Short daily quizzes over readings, handful of short quizzes over novels, and 3 papers for exams. She knows a lot of stuff and I learned a lot in this class. She really wants you to learn something so she genuinely cares.
You are only graded on tests and quizzes which makes it a harder class if you do not do as well on tests. She is a really great person and funny.
AMAZING professor! She tells stories of history with great detail and is very engaging. She only grades on tests and quizzes, but she gives study guides that have everything you need to know on them. Just make sure you take good notes because she speaks everything you need to know, and there is no powerpoint. Overall, would recommend taking her!
Machen is a great professor, she knows her stuff. Her Europe from WWI to the Present class is an awesome class. A LOT of reading for this class, you have daily reading quizzes over the readings. Only graded over 3 tests and 3 papers. As well as the daily quizzes, which are five points. Make sure you take good notes, because she doesn't use PPTs.
Professor Machen is amazing. Her lectures are so easy to follow and really interesting. She's young and knows her stuff. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
I loved Emily! I hate humanities, but I took HUMIII with her, and it was my favorite class. I usually suck at paying attention, but it was super easy to with her. It's like she was telling a story, and she's super super smart. Hard class, you have to take notes off of what she's saying and its all exams and quizzes, but wit her, its not bad!
By Far my favorite Prof in History Dept. Her classes are so fun. If you don't like discussion this class is not for you. There are heavy readings that are discussed in class. Daily 5 pt quizzes over the reading that are easy. Exams are open note/book but they are still hard. 3 5-pg papers that aren't bad if you put in the effort. Best Class!
Very easy class! Four book quizzes and 3 exams. She gives out the notes for the whole semester at the beginning of class.
Easily one of the best professors on campus. Her lectures are interesting and she is a very kind person. 100% recommend taking her class.
Professor Machen is an amazing professor. She goes fast through her lectures but they are really engaging and she is really knowledgeable. 10/10 would take one of her classes again.
Machen is an incredibly enganging professor. I'm not a huge fan of history, but she made it very interesting and worthwhile. Very knowledgable and caring. The book quizzes were very easy and straightforward, and the exams weren't bad if you studied. I would definitely take another class with her. Best humanities professor I had.
I hate history classes SO much but Professor Machen made them so interesting and so easy to follow along. The book quizzes were never hard (i never actually read the books, just found quizlets and summaries of them). All of her study guides i found on quizlet as well (word for word). Overall this was a great Humanities class!
Machen is the best lecturer I have ever listened to. Her quizzes and tests are the only thing she grades on, and I would say they are difficult, but within reason. Most kids skip her class and still do okay because she posts her notes online, but the class is interesting and you can get an A if you show up.
Emily is so sweet. I took Humanities 3 from her and we didn't have to buy a textbook because we took notes from her verbal lectures. Very interesting topics. You have to read 4 books during the semester, but realistically they're very easy and if you read, you'll do just fine on the quizzes. She is super knowledgable and makes history interesting.
Emily's class is not bad if you're there just to get a grade. However, she does have a lot of wrong ideas about many places around the world, and will make up her own version of many historical events. She is progressive but explains history from only one perspective, instead of showing both sides of the story. A humanities Prof shouldn't do that.
Emily is a very fashionable lady. I love her outfits! Class wise, she is very smart and doesn't read from a power point. She outlines battles and important people and will verbally tell you everything that went down in that historical event. So if you can't listen and write, I would work on it :)
Very good professor for Humanities III. She explains in a simple way so that it's really easy to understand.
Overall I enjoyed Professor Machen's class. There are only 4 quizzes and 3 tests but if you read for the quizzes and study for the tests you should be fine. She is one of the best professors that teaches humanities.
I heard nothing but great things about Emily Machen and everyone is correct, she is a great lecturer and full of knowledge. Is always making sure everyone is caught up and is understanding her material. One of my favorite classes I took because of her.
There is 4 book quizzes and 3 exams. You should do fine read the books and study for the tests and you'll do fine. Professor Machen is amazing even though it was online I've heard good things if you take it in person as well.
I didn't get to know Professor Machen much, but I could tell she was nice. The material is lecture HEAVY. The quizzes are based off books and exams off 30 + pages of notes (with no lecture). I thought I would like this class, but I kind of struggled. I wouldn't recommend if you're not a good test taker. You can only miss a few points for an A.
Extremely easy professor to take a humanities class with. Her lecture notes are short and simple yet still keeps detail. We had a couple of books to read but again, if you read her notes and study the topic, you'll pass easily.
Professor Machen is great, she keeps the course short and simple. All notes are posted online but her in person lectures are very detailed. Attending class depends on how you work with lectures. Makes the class interesting and is funny. Only 4 exams that look all the same (including Midterm and final) and 3 book quizzes all relatively easy.
She cares about her students a lot. Her lectures and fun and makes you want to learn the material even if history isnt your thing. You can tell she loves to teach and wants you to succeed in her class while learning something you didnt know before. Take her for humanities if you have the chance!
Attendance is not mandatory and the lectures are all posted word for word online. I would recommend coming to class because of interesting lectures but again put word for word online. 4 book quizzes and 3 exams make up your grade. You can tell she cares about what she is teaching and is a very good professor. I would recommend for a humanities
I recommend Machen to everyone. She posted her lecture notes online, however I still went to her class because she made lectures interesting. It was super easy to take notes, and the tests were online and easy as long as you went to class. Super sweet and you can tell that she loves what she is doing.
Professor Machen is what you want of a professor. The class is made up of a few book quizzes and some tests.
Emily's lectures are story telling which is amazing for me and most other students. Few book quizzes and exams that are fairly easy. She's super nice and her outfits are always cute!
Dr. Machen is amazing, has good lectures, and allows questions. This was for HIST1210. Tests are easy, daily quizzes over previous day's lectures. Super easy.
