The aleks take so much time each week and are not even relevant to the weekly quizzes. The weekly quizzes ask questions that are not even anything we learn about in lecture. Also, she always blames the students for her lack of ability to teach. I do not recommend taking her class.
Crap lecturer. Expects you to understand things as soon as she "teaches" them. The quizzes every other week essentially make you memorize a bunch of concepts then forget them to make room for the next unit. If you didn't take AP Chemistry in HS you probably won't understand half the things she says.
This class does not teach you how to actually learn chemistry. The lectures are horrible, as Dr Pelton speeds through lectures and bounces all over the place. The hw teaches you completely differently than the prof, so quizzes are extremely confusing. Watching youtube videos and self-teaching are a better way to learn than attending class.
This class should be really easy, but the way she presents the material and tests you makes it needlessly challenging. The weekly quizzes make it so you hardly have enough time to properly prepare, and the online homework system uses entirely different methods which creates confusion. Also the lectures often fail to cover everything on the quiz.
Meh. Not terrible, but not great. Weekly quizzes are often stressful, as there's a lot of content to cover beforehand. Sometimes the lectures don't bother to talk about everything on the quiz so you have to teach yourself. Homework often uses very different methods from the lecture. Study and you'll be fine but still the course is quite frustrating
The least accommodating professor ever, especially for disabled students. She's quite pretentious and very non-understanding. I would only give Pelton a 1, but considering the fact that she was given a 1500-student class I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that (hopefully) her rigidity is related to that. UMN chem department is pretty bad...
Too much homework
I think a lot of people leaving reviews for the chemistry department at UMN forget that Chem is usually a weeder class designed to fail you. That being said, I always enjoy Dr. Peltons lectures. She goes fast though. to really succeed and do well on quizzes you definitely need to read the textbook before lecture and do practice problems.
Pelton is the most unforgiving professor. She has single handily made my freshman year of college a living nightmare. The only nice thing about this class is that I have it online but the lecture videos are useless and ALEKS takes up way too much time. Avoid her and thank me later.
she literally sucks. Lectures aren't mandatory but everything on the quiz is what she talks about in class. Inconsiderate about problems we encounter and is un empathetic. Wears a ring on finger that doesn't even fit her sausage fingers which distracts from class.
There is so much ALEKS homework every week it is difficult to manage on top of other courses. She suggests spreading out textbook reading, lectures, and ALEKS homework over the week but the amount to do in a week makes it nearly impossible to do so. ALEKS homework is always nothing like her lectures.
What an absolutely horrendous teacher. She does NOT care about her students ONE BIT. ALEKS takes up way too much time, and does not relate to any of the quizzes we take. She is unbearably rude and lazy. She is not willing to be an actual teacher and help her students out, just throws the syllabus at you if you ask. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.
There's a lot of ALEKS the first couple of weeks, so do not skimp on that initial knowledge check! Beyond that, Dr. Pelton is quick to respond to emails and is always willing to answer questions. Office hours are 1:1 which is a downside in my opinion, but overall she wants you to succeed. Do the homework, go to lectures, and you'll do great.
Assigns way too much homework, doesn't explain topics enough, too much stuff all at once, and very awful class.
There is way too much ALEKS. Other than that the course is fine.
I took this class online so the lectures I watched were pre-recorded. Professor Pelton was really thorough when explaining things and she seemed to really enjoy what she was doing and teaching. The homework is a ton but is mandatory in pretty much all chemistry courses at the U. The class was stressful because of all the homework.
I can't describe how horrible this class is and how Dr. Pelton set it up. The ALEKS homework system is terrible and I have gotten zero sleep trying to complete it. So much unnecessary stress and frustration that could have easily been avoided if she made a few changes and if I listened to everyone else on here. Please try to avoid her at all costs.
No matter what I do I cant get a good grade on test. She goes through lectures so fast you cant process what is happening because you are too worried about writing down the information.
Dont take this class! Just take 1061 because the amount of stress from the homework alone will make you rethink your entire life. Dr. Pelton has good lecture videos, but the ALEKS problems are relentless and never ending. Often, they do not match the chapter material and you need to figure it out yourself. Strict about deadlines and no extracred
While her lectures are informational and pretty clear, they dont cover everything that will be on the test or the homework. Obviously in college you will have to teach yourself a bit, but every unit i had to learn the unit myself. She does reach out and is kind. If i have any advice, do your homework as early as you can, cause it is a lot.
Many did not like the way she ran the class, and I was not the biggest fan of it either, but I also did not hate it as much as others. Could be better, could be worse.
This class is online and the videos she posts barely cover any useful information for the test. She does have a study guide to help prepare for the test however, the tests are every week and the final is cumulative. This class is definitely passable but it will be a lot of extra work on your own.
Okay so if you're going to take this class, don't be like me. DO NOT WAIT ON THE HOMEWORK. ALEKS is going to kill you. And I mean it.(due in more than 3day) The Homeworks are due every Thursday so start working on them as soon as possible. Dr. P is easily reached by email. The quizzes and what you learn is nothing alike, do the practice problems.
I dont mind Emily Pelton that much. Shes nice but takes forever to reply. Her lecture videos are pretty helpful and clear. The ALEKS homework is hell. Time consuming and nothing like the tests. Its pointless and only results in my brain being burnt out. Main reason my grade isnt where I want. I have other classes I cant even focus on bc of it.
To start off ALEKS sucks and takes a lot of time but it actually will prepare you for the quizzes. Emily is very responsive and caring, she has clear outlines of when stuff is due so don't miss the deadlines. Quizzes are just like the practice problems so DO them! I loved this class and definitely would take again.
Pelton always gave enough time for questions during lecture and answered them helpfully. Good pace. Lecture included examples & practice problems. Assignments and grading for the course are made very clear in syllabus. Homework was relavent - included types of problems that were on quizzes. Online textbook - read ahead before lecture!!
Pelton is an ok professor. She took probably 2-3 days t reply to emails, but that was fine. We had weekly quizzes and homework. Make sure to be on top on your work or you won't be in a good place. Aleks is annoying, but it's doable.
The weekly quizzes can be annoying, but they are a great way to prepare you for the final. Aleks was the bane of my existence, but finishing all of the topics kept my grade up when I didn't do great on some quizzes. Pelton had good lecture videos, but you need the textbook to fill in the rest of the knowledge needed for the quizzes.
Will ignore emails and have questions on the test that werent taught in lectures or textbook
My worst class. The ALEKS homework is VERY heavy and is basically full of you teaching yourself. The weekly quizzes were not similar to the ALEKS and the problems were barely covered in the lecture videos.
I had to get botox just because of this lady. The amount of wrinkles on my face is insane. I lost so much sleep because of ALEKS. Worst system ever. I do not recommend this class. None of the material is consistent throughout the teaching methods.
Expect many hours of homework a week. That being said, it is also worth a lot and graded on whether it is completed. Homework is around 50% of your grade so although it is time consuming it is worth it. Do not take this class if you are not willing to put in the work. Also weekly quizzes over weekly chapter every Thursday night/Friday morning.
Emily was fine, she has really good lecture videos but the ALEKs homework is nothing like the quizzes which is hard. Im at the point where if I fail my final I can still get an A because of all the homework points, so the homework does save you in the end if you do it! Go to office hours, and watch the lecture videos and you'll be okay.
Unhelpful prof and the ALEKS homework made me want to die.
Dr. Pelton uses the program ALEKS way too much. Make sure you don't skimp out on the initial knowledge check or you'll be doing a crazy amount of work for it later. There are weekly quizzes worth 30 points that are pretty average, +20 points weekly for ALEKS and 150 points for the final. Overall hated this class, but if you do your work itll be ok.
I'm not sure how her in-person classes are but if you're taking her online you have to kinda be able to teach yourself how to do things. Our ALEKS homework was honestly the worse part of this class but if you can manage your time then you should be fine. I also recommend going back to get full points on the homework as it helps with your grade.
Emily Pelton is an average instructor. The teaching style is just writing notes to her lectures. The ALEKS assignments that go with the class can be incredibly challenging, and they are hit-or-miss if they are related and applicable to the content that will be on the weekly quizzes.
grades based on points out of 1100 with homework 20 pts each, quizzes 30 each, the final 150 pts, and completing aleks 300 pts.
Very unforgiving and unhelpful when you email with questions. Does not care about students in the slightest.
The reason this class was difficult was because the ALEKS homework would take up a lot of time and the content within the ALEKS homework never showed up on the quiz. If I could retake the course again, I would focus heavily on the practice problems within the textbooks and rush through Aleks and get it done early.
Dr Pelton isn't the worst prof I've had, but the way she structured this course made infuriated me. The homework was due Thursday afternoon, a little after the morning lecture, yet with my schedule I had to finish the homework the night before and learn half of the topics myself. Also, the lectures are very dense. I'm glad to be done with chem.
Her class is asynchronous meaning all you do is watch prerecorded lectures and then do hw through ALEKS. AKA the hardest program to learn from. Her lectures make the content seem so easy but the quizzes and homework are so hard. I put so much time into this class and my grade just doesnt reflect that. Avoid this professor.
LOTS of homework on Aleks. Aleks, lectures and book questions do not prepare you for the questions on quizzes. Pelton ignores my emails. The biggest thing for me was the fact that we had questions on the quizzes that were way more advanced than those in book, lectures or aleks. Pretty frustrating. ):
Very easy A as long as you have taken high school chemistry and brush up on some topics you dont remember.
Im really good with chemistry but her class was so hard and ALEKS was a lot I don't think she understands we have there classes over all don't take anything with her , her videos don't explain anything
She is enthusiastic, but I second other comments about her horrible class structure. The homework was due the same day as our 2nd lecture, so I had to learn most of the material on my own, or I wouldn't know it by the Friday quiz. Pelton isn't my favorite to listen to either, but you need to pay attention. Do the homework and study for quizzes.
I really enjoyed Dr. Pelton. Her lectures included practice problems that were near identical to quiz questions, was very clear on what you needed to know, and quickly responded to emails. My biggest gripe was homework was due a few hours after the last lecture of the week, and my schedule also forced me to take the quiz a few hours after that.
Dr. Pelton was quick to go over topics that were rather confusing and used aleks as the primary means for teaching the class. Way too much homework for a gen chem course with 30 point weekly quizzes with 20 some Aleks modules.
During lectures, Pelton was an okay instructor. She was completely unavailable outside of class and took a month to respond to emails. The ALEKs topics during the first two weeks were also ridiculous. It took 40 hours to finish them.
I found CHEM 1015 to be one of the most frustrating classes. Professor Pelton was not the most accessible person. When I asked for help in a zoom meeting she claimed that I should have known the info I was confused about and was in a rush to leave. I also found that ALEKS had no correlation with her exams whatsoever.
I'm a PSEO student looking to get high school chemistry out of the way. This wasn't the move. Lasted a week. Don't bother to watch the lecture vids, because it's not on the homework. You just end up flipping through hours of "Explanations" on ALEKS whilst getting more and more frustrated. Requirements be darned, your mental health matters more!
just no. 80% of aleks homework was unrelated to the lectures/exams so its just there to suffer through? when you go to office hours you have to wait for a really long time (since EVERY chem student needs help) and then when you finally get through its clear all she wants is for you to leave.
Prof. Pelton obviously doesn't care about her students or their success. The average grade in the class is somewhere around a D/D-, a fact she seems to be proud of, based on the inclusion of this fact in the syllabus. I learned more from watching random YouTube videos on the topics than her god-awful pre-recorded lectures.
She is so inconsiderate of her students' lives outside of class. We get 70 topics a week on aleks and she has no flexibility for when its due. I spend hours working on it and don't get other work done because of it. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T TAKE HER! FIND A DIFFERENT INSTRUCTOR!!!!
In this class currently and it's eating up almost all of my time. The ALEKS are beating me to death. I have to work on this at least 2 hours a day and that's not counting the quiz every week.
Professor Pelton is okay. ALEKS is unbearable but the content of the class isn't too bad. If there wasn't too much homework it would be way better!
Doesn't respond to emails. online lectures are uninformative, the homework isn't always like the weekly tests. She was on academic probation for too many kids failing her class and I can see why after taking her class.
The ALEKS homework takes hours to do and it doesn't correlate to the weekly quizzes and exams. The lectures that she posts don't help at all with the homework. This course is unbearable due to the amount of weekly homework and quiz.
Honestly, this class was very straight forward. She gives you the proper tools to succeed and combines lecture videos and textbook reader, so no matter how you learn, you'll be accounted for. Every week was the same which I liked, basically lectures, ALEKS, textbook, and test. I don't really know how you get a C in this class, unless you don't try
The Aleks homework is definitely the worst part about this class. I always rush through it and focus on the lecture videos, study guide questions and practice problems and I did fairly well. If you can get done with the homework early and focus on learning through the things I listed, you'll be golden.
First few weeks I was questioning my existence, so much homework. Her lectures are easy to understand but then the hw is way more difficult. She does not respond to emails. The quiz questions are 10x more difficult than the actual hw or was not covered as much as other topics were in the chapter.
Dr. Pelton is good at chemistry & seems very smart. But her style of teaching and how she sets her class up makes it extremely difficult unless you already have some background in chemistry. She doesn't help individual students much, just throws resources at you in emails & announcements. Overall a very impersonal experience taking her classes.
Completely absent professor, when emailed sometimes I would receive an automated message back. This happened several times with no actual response from the professor. Aleks is used lots in this class. The homework at least prepares you for the quizzes. Do not watch the lecture videos as they are a waste of time and will confuse you further.
Let's be honest, the entire chem department sucks but Pelton is not horrible. The Aleks is such a big part of your grade so if you can stay on top of that you will be fine. The tests are pretty straight forward but don't rely on Aleks for it. DO TEXTBOOK PRACTICE PROBLEMS
This class was not as hard as everyone says. This class did take a lot of my time (8-10 hours a week) just doing ALEKS homework. My shortcut advice is to make notes on your ALEKS homework, note her lectures because that info is always on the quiz, and look over the study guide. You don't need to do the other things she recommends in order to pass.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The ALEKS class is the most unrealistic and time-wasting event I have ever had to suffer through. Many kids suffer and will suffer in this class. If there is any possibility that you can skip this please do. I have no opinion on the professor herself but I hope change comes soon.
Attendance isn't mandatory but she doesnt record her lectures, so you'll have to go to class. Ive noticed that EVERY practice problem IN CLASS is on the quizzes, and even though we all know ALEKS topics suck, it's worth more than the final. Bottomline is, your most likely to get an A in her class out of everyone else, you just have adapted to her.
Online class was really tough. Lots of ALEKS every week but it's a big part of the grade, so doing it counts. Quizzes every week that aren't horribly difficult. Not my favorite lecturer by a long shot but I got the requirement out of the way.
Everyone says that this class is super difficult, but as long as you watch the videos each week and DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS, you will do just fine. ALEKS is a waste of time, but it is used by almost every prof in the chem department so it's hard to get away from. Find a routine between watching lectures and ALEKS and you will do great!
Pelton is easily one of the most stubborn professors I've ever had. She will respond to your emails with a simple copy-paste response, and isn't much help overall. You pretty much have to teach yourself the entire course, and homework takes forever, so I recommend starting it as soon as you can before the semester starts.
She doesn't do anything. All the "lectures" were just pre-recorded so honestly taught myself basically all the topics. I had to rely on ALEKs to make sure I knew it. The annoying thing was that the math problems on ALEKS were different then the ones on the weekly quizzes.
Pelton wasn't horrible, but many students hated her as a professor. This class is very test and homework heavy. I spent 6-8 hours doing homework each week and sometimes more. Lectures are super boring but you need to go unless you want to fail.
DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE! SHE IS HORRIBLE! I HOPE SHE KNOWS HOW BAD SHE IS!
pelton is someone you don't want for any chemistry, while as a person she is pretty nice, she expects very hard quizzes every single week and ALEKS every single. The work load is absolutely insane. be ready to spend 90% of your time on this class. She also is not much help in terms of getting questions answered.
I will begin to say that I thought professor Pelton wasn't as bad as she seemed throughout my time in Chem 1015; however, she uses attitude frequently and snarky remarks when emailing instead of actually helping students. It's really degrading and I can see why so many people dislike you, and your class.
This class is a ton of work for an introductory class, but overall it is a manageable class if you dedicate a lot of time towards it. However, Professor Pelton is very inaccessible. When she does answer her email, the responses are not comprehensive answers and they are borderline, if not blatantly rude. I would not recommend her as a professor.
She's very hard to reach outside of class. I emailed regarding the final exam FOUR DAYS before it was due, and she responded after the final was over. Her emails are often snarky or have attitude, and she clearly does not enjoy teaching this course. TONS of Aleks homework that often took several hours to complete.
Just don't. This professor is notorious for making things difficult. Let alone was even on academic probation because so many people failed the class! If you put in your time and effort into this class, you could do decent, or minimum to fail. But the correlation with homework and quizzes and tests and lectures is just weird.
DONT TAKE THIS HER CLASS. 3-5 hrs a day for ALEKS hw. Weird due date time. Once asked for extension for hw due to Wi-Fi problems, replied in a snarky way referring me to syllabus. Then basically told me to do ALEKS hw on my phone instead. Catch me doing 3-5 hrs of homework on my phone. Fun.
She is a very passive professor and she shows no compassion to students. There are biweekly quizzes that are basically your entire grade. They are hard. Homework takes so long too. She expects you to know so much before starting the class. She is very strict with deadlines. Must go to class or you will fail.
I didn't take this class but my girlfriend did and she did like 80 ALEKS a week and was super stressed wouldn't recommend
Avoid Chem1061 with Dr. Pelton like the plague. Not a good professor
The University of Minnesota's chemistry department is bad, If you have to take 1061 I am sorry. I spent an ~7 hours out of class on chem every week. Pelton is most likely the easiest grading out of all professors, but she's very rude and condescending in emails. In addition to this she doesn't record notes, so if you miss a class ... good luck.
Other than the weekly meaningless emails she sent the class, I never once talked to or met her. Skip 1015 if at all possible. Take ALEKS beforehand and try to get into 1061 instead. 1015 is just not worth the trouble and time it took, and I was never really sure what my grade was because she grades relative to the class.
This class was relatively straight forward. Do the homework and the quizzes and you will be fine. I did not interact with Dr. Pelton personally. There can be a large amount of ALEKS, but it is easily manageable with good time management skills. Some of the lectures don't have the best examples, so using outside resources was really helpful.
I have taken two classes from her and both of them were awful experiences. She is extremely difficult to reach at times and gives no exceptions, extra credit, or extensions on any assignments. She is by far my least favorite professor I have had and I try to avoid her classes at all costs.
Emily was incredibly kind and I really liked her lectures. She always answered questions and worked to shape lectures to the students. However she is very rigid when it came to the weekly quizzes and homework. Even with studying, it is hard to get high scores on the quizzes. She does not offer extensions or drop any quiz grades.
Pelton might be the worst prof I've ever had. Her strict grading makes it nearly impossible to get good grades. The quizzes are always nothing like the lectures or assigned homework which also makes the class difficult. The average quiz scores for the class were consistently between 50-60% and never curved. She also doesn't care about her students.
if you stay up to date with the ALEKS homework and do the practice problems, you'll be fine. It is very time consuming though.
I do not understand all the hate for her. She is a really good lecturer and provides practice problems in every class period that are on par with what to expect for an exam. She cares about her students and provides additional practice questions when people are confused. ALEKS is annoying and hard, but every level of chem at the U has ALEKS.
This professor did not teach material that she tested students on, and the lectures were not helpful. She gave out work that was due for credit and did not teach the material. Even after watching all of the lectures and taking notes on all of them the work was still unable to be completed. Horrible (literally the worst) professor.
LITERALLY THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
she is so horrible that i am never going to take another chem class. i hope that she is never allowed to teach again. the WORST professor at the U
Didn't teach a single thing. NONE of the course work was taught in lecture. Forced me to learn by myself as she was not helpful at all and was completely unavailable. She is horrible.
Do not be scared to take an in-person chem class with her! Dr. Pelton does a great job providing practice problems for 1062. The way she has the class structured is quite manageable if you are willing to do the work. I took 19 credits with this class, and still had time to do fun things! She is a good teacher.
Going into this semester I almost dropped the class because of the hate for Dr. Pelton, but her lectures have been nothing but clear and understandable. I hated chem before this class, and it's finally one of my favorite classes. Yes, there is a lot of work, but after getting 100% on the first two tests, it's something you learn to enjoy.
I don't recommend. She makes my life very difficult and now I have depression.
Wouldnt recommend at all.
NEVER take this horrid profs class 1061. Peltons ALEKS homework takes 5-7 hours per day and is not manageable, lecture VIDEOS are 10 years outdated and not helpful. the quizzes are completely different from what lecture vids are on. She is rude and does not care about her students at all even if they are sick/struggling. She is awful and atrocious.
Lmao avoid this prof at all costs. I had her for chem II and the quizzes were so in depth and difficult that even studying for a week and listening carefully to lecture notes BARELY made me pass. She literally does nothing to help you understand. Probably the worst professor Ive ever had. She shouldve stayed on academic probation.
She is atrocious.
Pelton is heinous. Never take her class if you can help it. Quizzes have absolutely nothing to do with the lectures and even if you study for four weeks for a test you will still fail.
Easy online class. The lectures are simple and easy to follow; However, don't always follow what ALEKS are assigned that week. Get ready to do A LOT of ALEKS, but they do help you understand the content a lot better- However, you do have to teach yourself some because of the lack of intenseness within the lectures. Easy A or B if you do the work.
Dr.Pelton may be one of the WORST teachers I have ever had. I was a straight-A student before Peltons' class; now not only was my grade suffering for this class specifically, but It consumed my life so much that my other classes grades started to drop. Avoid at all costs!!!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Because the class is taught online using her lectures and the homework is on ALEKS, there's a lot that does not overlap making it near impossible to learn the material through the lectures. I would rather not take chemistry than take this class
If you like having no communication between class and professor then Emily Pelton is the one for you. All online class, the lectures and homework had little to no crossover, and it is impossible to ask for help. Absolutely horrible class, do not take if possible.
She responds to my emails promptly. She has granted my grade change requests most of the time. She is very kind during office hours and makes sure I understand everything. Do the work, embrace how helpful ALEKS is by taking the extra time to read the explanations. There is no reason to fail the course. Don't be lazy. This is college people.
her lecture videos don't help you with the aleks and the aleks doesn't help with the tests. if you email her for help she sends a copy and paste email telling you she can't do anything and do get a tutor and study more. every question is a trick question. will ruin your gpa. do not take unless you are forced against your will. impossible to do good
To be honest, yes the online class is annoying and you do spend a lot of time on ALEXs but it's what should be expected of an online chemistry class. Don't cram all your work into the last day of the week and get the lectures done as soon as possible.
Genuinely an awful person and professor. None of the lectures actually have to do with the homework or quizzes and it forces you to learn through youtube. Emailing her is completely useless and often times I was sent a copy paste message or not responded to at all.
No clue why she is hated on this badly. Her lectures are long but they include numerous practice examples that are almost always on the tests (she shows you exactly how to do them in the videos). Aleks is a lot of work, but it is manageable and the homework goals are attainable. I had reached out to her a few times and she always replied nicely.
Idk why Pelton has such crappy reviews. I've had no problem with her thus far. It's a LOT of work but it's college. Are we surprised. Don't wait until the last minute to do stuff and DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS and you'll be totally fine. Very easy class if you put in the work.
I am indifferent about Pelton. She does make the quizzes challenging but this is expected in a college chemistry class. If you read the online textbook, do aleks (look at the explanation), take THOUGHTFUL notes, watch her lecture videos, and do practice problems, then you have a good chance of passing quizzes. She explains things well in videos.
Lectures (not recorded) were fast-paced and essentially a stream of practice problems. If you get lost or miss one, it's difficult to catch up. Having said that, Dr. Pelton is SUPER clear about what is expected, exams are familiar if you everything she suggests, and she is quick to help if you email/attend office hours. She has a lot of energy.
not very responsive in general. the lectures dont give you any information. ive never seen her reference the textbook. the class is supposed to be an introductory chemistry class and as a first year student i felt very alone with no support for this class in any way. she also was on probation because she failed too many students.
Very bad teacher
Hard class, but I learned well from her lecture style. ALEKS sucks and takes up a lot of time.
Puts material on quizzes and exams that is not taught in lecture
I think Pelton herself is a great professor! But I find this class to be extremely frustrating: all online, weekly quizzes you can't makeup, hard material and lots of it, time-consuming, aleks program, harder to ask questions/get help...not good :(
Pelton gets a terrible rep but she's really not that bad. Her videos clearly showcase the material, and her test doesn't have any real curveballs if you are doing the practice questions and Aleks. But she is super condescending and does not give partial credit. If you want an A, she's not bad but I wouldn't go to her for any emotional support.
Not completely sure why she gets such awful ratings. If you actually do your work (ex: ALEKS) and watch the lecture videos, you should do just fine. At the end of the day, any chemistry class is going to make you do a lot of work and watch many lectures since these courses are packed with a lot of content. Don't blame Emily, blame the course.
Avoid taking a class with Emily Pelton as much as possible! The quizzes are almost impossible to pass even when you show up to every lecture, do all of the homework, and read the book. I had to spend so much time on chemistry that I could barely focus on my other classes and wrecked my GPA.
Like many others here I don't understand the hate for Dr. Pelton. Some of her lecture videos are longer than they need to be, but they clearly cover the content that is being taught, usually with multiple examples. Weekly quizzes cover content in her lecture videos and ALEKS took on average 2-3 hours a week (up to 6), but neither were bad.
Lectures are very hard to follow as Emily just solves problems in a very quick manner with no explanation whatsoever. Quizzes are very hard even with a ton of studying and completing the homework. Homework is all done on aleks which is a very annoying system for homework.
Emily Pelton is by far the worse. The content isn't the worse, though sometimes she will throw in questions that aren't in the textbook, lecture, or HW. What makes her awful is how unapproachable she is and condescending. If you ask her a question, she will literally send you screenshots of the syllabus as if that will magically fix my problem.
Absolutely avoid as much as possible. She does not provide you with the information needed to do well on your weekly quizzes nor weekly Aleks assignments. So, you spend hours finding outside information (tutorials on how to do the math) just to complete this course. Copies and pasted from syllabus in response to emails.
In one week you need to complete Aleks, lectures, practice problems, and a quiz. Which would've been fine but the content was taught/practiced differently between the four. There's content on the quizzes that she either fails to go over in depth, or not at all, leaving you unprepared. Quizzes are not curved, even when the class average is super low.
Dr. Pelton had very good, clear lectures. Gave lots of practice problems and went over the subject matter clearly. The course grade was very clear and set up to easily pass as long as you do the homework since there are lots of possible homework points. ALEKS was due every other week so not bad at all.
Chemistry is hard no matter who the professor is, but Emily Pelton is quite a bad instructor. Lecture videos oftentimes have little relation to content on Aleks or quizzes. When you try to reach out to her, she no help and usually says "look at the syllabus." You can still do pretty well through practice problems and youtube to prepare for quizzes.
Chem is hard regardless of the prof I just wish all the concepts in the quizzes were talked about in the lectures and that her lectures were more informative, I was just teaching myself things with youtube half of the time.
The ALEKS hw DID NOT align with the weekly quizzes at all. Her lectures did not help with the homework so they were very difficult to get through. The only saving grace was that the class is made up of a lot of points so even though I did horrible on the final, I was still able to keep my grade.
Dr. Pelton is a great lecturer; the practice problems in lecture are actually very helpful to learn the material. She also makes sure any questions in class are answered well, and helps students during problems. However, the quizzes sometimes cover topics that are hardly covered in lecture and homework, and maybe covered in the book once or twice.
Lectures are all online videos. It may seem appealing but they take SUPER long to finish watching + a good portion of what she goes over isn't on the ALEKS assignments. Speaking of ALEKS, there is a ton of homework assigned which is made even longer by the point systems ALEKS uses. Avoid taking this class if there are better options!
Pelton is an OK professor. She obviously knows what she's doing and really enjoys chemistry, which is good; however the amount of homework and lectures you're required to complete is excessive (expect about 3.5hrs for hw and 2hrs for lectures each week). Homework cushions your grade though, thankfully. CHEM 1015 is super easy information as well.
You'll have weekly quizzes and ALEKS homework. Your quizzes make up most of your grade so you'll have to study a lot. ALEKS is a bit annoying when you have to redo topics. No extra credit opportunities either.
Pelton is straight up the worst professor. If you do take 1015 with her, prepare for rigorous quizzes weekly on Monday and a stressful Friday of Alex. No extra credits whatsoever and everything is based on "if calculator" when you seek help from her about your grade. Go with any other professor for the sake of your mental health.
Although the online course was convenient, Pelton sucks. She will not round grades, she is not accommodating and the lectures are hard to follow. Quizzes are not like the homework.
I don't think there's nothing wrong with Dr. Pelton specifically, but the class is structured terribly. ALEKS is a nightmare and the shear amount of homework is absurd given the fact that it differs so much from the quizzes. Proctorio is terrifying and half of the lectures feel oddly out of place.
This class has been by far the worst class I have had. You have to do Aleks in this class and takes up to about 3 or more hrs a week depending on how many topics you have to do. I had this class online and you will have a quiz each week. I would not recommend this class to anyone... even my worst enemy!
If given the chance to avoid online chem 1015 with Emily Pelton, count your lucky stars. She is the least helpful professor I have had and she treats technology challenges with absolutely no grace nor understanding. It is easy to forget that students on the other side of a computer screen are actual people but she clearly has fallen victim to this.
Overall the class material was not difficult but the lectures were not very helpful in teaching the material. For most of the quizzes we taught ourselves. She was also not very helpful with answering questions and would often just tell people to look at the syllabus or go see a chem tutor. The course was a lot of work for 3 credits.
Dr. Pelton has a horrible reputation because chemistry is a difficult subject. However, I had a wonderful experience in her class. She clearly explains how the class will be graded on the first day, and the course has a generous curve. The practice problems in class are exactly like the quizzes. ALEKS is annoying, but that's to be expected.
The class was online, so I didn't get to know Dr. Pelton personally. Her Canvas site is pretty confusing, but there are lectures for each topic under the weekly modules tab on the left (I didn't know that until halfway through the class so FYI). She's ok at answering emails, but not great. Lots of opportunities to get points, so take advantage!
Professor Pelton is not as bad as everyone makes her seem. If you are willing to put in the effort and time, you can do decent in the class. Grading was fair and her weekly quizzes were not hard. The optional practice problems on the study guide and office hours helped tremendously. It is a time-consuming class but is doable.
I would spend upwards of 10 hours a week on this class. The amount of homework you get can get ridiculous at times, and many of the problems with ALEKS will not help you on the weekly tests. The lectures can be a little outdated and sometimes don't really correlate with the weekly tests, but they will be the best thing that will help you.
This professor sucks. gosh please fire her before the whole class fails again.
Prof Pelton's lectures are not the best and she only gives a couple of practice problems in them. There are also "knowledge quizzes" in ALEKS which make you redo about an hour of work if you do poorly. Dont take this class for your physical sciences req if you can help it. She also sometimes takes a while to answer emails :/
Emily Pelton is a terrible teacher, she doesn't teach 1015 whatsoever, she posts lecture videos that have nothing to do with the ALEKS topics and then tests on random parts of what she lectures on. She is unreachable via e-mail for questions, yet when she responds the answers she gives are basically "figure it out yourself". She simply doesn't care
Expect to complete 3-4 hours of homework, 2+ hours of lectures to watch, and then another 2+ hours of reading the textbook to prepare for quizzes. Unfortunately, all of this is not enough to do well on the quizzes. You will likely need to seek out a tutor or watch additional videos online to get through the quizzes each week. She doesn't offer help
She is nice, but the class isn't structured the best. The grading scale is weird; you need 850/900 points to get an A (94.4%.) I got a C on most quizzes and on the final. I received an A- in the class. Do everything you can to learn ALEKS because that is a big portion of your grade.
Does not seem to care about teaching students at all. Lectures cover vague content not in homework or tests and she is very unreachable outside of class (rude to students in person and over email). Do ALEKS homework as it will help your grade.
Every lecture video has nothing to do with the ALEKS homework. The ALEKS homework is always assigned in waves of 15+ topics each week. This takes up more time than most of the other classes. With it being all online there's no way to ask questions because her email is completely useless since her answers are "figure it out."
she's callous and rude to her students. she's incredibly unhelpful and a terrible lecturer. just get chegg.
Quizzes every week, this course was taken online so pacing is a huge thing. I could usually be done with the work by Thursday. Half of the time the content on ALEKS wasn't mentioned in the lecture, but it's useful to read the textbook on ALEKS. She's pretty rude in emails so good luck trying to get clarification on anything.
This class was okay, do the reading at least to skim and watch the videos +practice problems and youll do fine. She was snarky in email for no reason but her online lectures were very helpful for me so I give her that. Compared to some of the other online classes, this is one you can succeed in if you try.
This class is not hard if you work hard. I got Cs and Bs on most exams, and ended with an A. The ALEKS is an easy 100% on homework. Dr. Pelton is great, and an amazing professor. She is enthusiastic and has engaging lectures. I think people dislike her so much because THEY are making mistakes in the class, not her.
Looking back, this course was taken a bit too seriously for an entry level chem. No quizzes are dropped nor curved. Little to no instruction was given when students ask questions, as to make us fend for ourselves. My upper-level courses have way more leniency than Pelton gives, which is pretty ironic.
There is no leniency with grades at all. One test the whole class failed and she didn't do anything about it. If you go to lecture and study for the exams you should be fine, but you have to do well on the exams, as they are they only grades in the grade book. She is kind of rude, but I will say I did feel prepared after lectures.
Chemistry is hard, but Pelton teaches it pretty well. 95% of the material on the tests in covered in lecture, but the tests are more complex than the practice problems in class. Class has a generous curve (79 is an A- type thing). If you have to take chem, not a bad option if you come to lecture.
There I was, just out of EHS, hoping I'd score an A. I get a D. All my credits GONE! She said that work on ALEKs is a big chunk of our grade and we should all 100% it (I think so (grading was so unclear) So I stayed up every night til like 4AM finishing the 5 diff. modules with like 20 questions (of which I failed so many) hoping to boost my grade!
Dr. Pelton gets a lot of hate and I'm not really sure why. She is a great professor who teaches in a way that makes the information being learned very easy to understand. Chemistry is obviously a difficult class, but I learned so much and actually understood the material because of the way Dr. Pelton teaches.
sucks because most of the students taking this course are clueless freshmen, and imo- she's not the right person to be teaching that demographic. she's very rude and unhelpful to a population that needs a lot of guidance as they're transitioning from HS to college. bro really takes this "teaching" position too seriously lmao.
The coarse is over whelming at first but if you complete Aleks on time and do all the recommended questions at the end of each chapter you will do well.
Lots of lectures and hours of homework every week. Quizzes are proctored. Need to put a lot of time in to get a good grade, but that is in part because the class is online. Some quiz questions were not covered in lecture, but were in the textbook. If you don't do well on quizzes, the ALEKS homework is a very easy way to boost your grade.
worst professor. in their emails they act like they care but they really don't. quizzes have nothing to do with ALEKS. No leniency or accommodations. whatever don't recommend her though
Dr. Pelton was a great teacher. I thought the structure of the class was very good and she made it clear what was expected. If you didn't know where to find something you could check in the course FAQ and chances were it would clear it up.
I took this class twice and had to drop it both times due to the lack on communication and help from the actual professor. I did go to the chem center for help but the quizzes and homework are very different and can be extremely confusing. I would avoid Pelton's class at all costs
She is not terrible and I actually really like her style of teaching. The material is hard to understand and I think she understands that. They homework is worth a lot of points which I like because then the exams don't weigh as much. I took the summer course so it was really fast paced. She is a funny professor and I enjoyed her class.
I took her class over the summer and it was tough, but to get a good grade you have to put a lot of work in. She is very prepared in lectures and gives practice problems during lectures that help comprehend the content she teaches. Overall if you read the textbook, do the homework, take time to study, you will do just fine.
she was not that bad lol you guys just dont understand chemistry
Only graded on tests. Her tests were never based on what we learned in class and did not help students when they would email her with questions.
ALEKS homework assignments are a travesty. I signed up to learn chemistry, not to waste my time treasure hunting for some Ksp value for some chemical compound in a poorly constructed database. It is funny to watch people spew copium in this review thread leaving the professor bad ratings due to their inability to comprehend simple chemistry.
This teacher was one of the worst ones I have had while in school. She made it apparent that she didn't care if you passed or failed or even learned any of the material. Also, if you wanted to ask question or went for help she made sure I felt like I was the problem. If you can avoid taking a class with her I highly recommend.
If you do all of the Aleks and actually study before tests this class is very manageable. Read the Aleks textbook because sometimes her lectures missed some key points for the quiz. The homework is time consuming but pays off in the end because that's the majority of your grade. Aleks helps make up for points lost on quizzes which is nice.
ummmm just no.
I thought this course is a required INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY, for goodness sakes. Definitely seems like a 3000 level class for someone majoring in chemistry. Ugh!!!
She doesn't teach
Does not teach. Expects you to know everything without explaining.
ummmm just don't do it. avoid this woman at all costs. shes passive aggressive and not understanding at all.
Just please avoid her. I haven't encountered a worse teacher in my entire life so just please. If you have to take this class no matter what, then make sure to not take more than 2 classes in that semester because you are in for a ride. At least 50 homework's per week plus the hardest exams ever.
Very test heavy with lots of work every week. Would not take this course again.
She is not accommodating at all.
I'm gonna be so honest about Dr. Pelton: she is very clear about expectations for the course and offers plentiful resources for students to be successful. While she could be available more frequently, people claiming she is not accommodating ought to read the syllabus; she sets out very simple requirements, that while unmoving, are not unfair.
Professor Pelton does not teach. Don't take this course unless you are 100% confident in teaching yourself all of the necessary material, or can afford to pay a tutor.
THE HOMEWORK DOES NOT MATCH UP WITH THE QUIZZES AT ALL. just bad class DO NOT TAKE GO STRAIGHT TO CHEM PRINCIPLES 1
I found that she made quality lecture videos, but I have a lot of issues with the course content. The quizzes were due at weird times, didn't always test the content she taught in the videos, and there was no extra credit or room to make up assignments. Worst part was the avg. scores on all the quizzes were ~70%.
Literally so horrible. Her video lectures barely relate to the ALEKS work and practice problems of that week-- you are basically having to figure everything out on your own. When emailed for help on tests AFTER going through the steps in the syllabus about proctorio, she basically blames you and doesn't do anything to help.
I took chemistry entirely online and ts was hard ngl. But getting to just watch the lecture videos at my own pace was really nice, and all I had to do was lab so I got my credit. I think i'd recommend it if you took some type of science/chemistry before. Ofc the math stuff is hard but just practice lots and you'll get the hang of it!
Homework assignments on Aleks would sometimes take me up to 8 hours to complete which is ridiculous, homework is due wednesday and tests are due friday at 4, very limited time slots. Lecture videos were so boring and long for no reason.
Do NOT take this course! It is so extremely difficult for no reason. The lecture videos have no relation to the ALEKS homework you do weekly, so you will be Youtubing/Chegging your way through this course. The class is online which obviously makes it difficult as well. The ALEKS homework will quite literally save your grade. DO NOT TAKE!
Her lectures have been far more confusing than anything else I've looked at for this class. She can have an incredibly slow turn around when it comes to emails as well. It once took her 3 days to respond to an email I sent her about the test. Her tests are oddly worded and isn't anything like the homework or textbook problems she provides.
I really tried to give Dr. Pelton the benefit of the doubt after reading these reviews but she truly lived up to them, confirming nearly every negative thing that was said about her. An introductory college chemistry course should NOT be online. I taught myself how to do everything, which shouldn't be how it is. Worst professor I have ever had.
Dr. Pelton is not a very kind professor. She does not respond to emails/concerns in a good regard, she tends to treat students with disrespect. If you like online classes, this course is for you, but if you struggle, definitely do not take this course.
Pelton is the worst teacher ever. When you email her about anything she doesn't really care to help you out, she tells you to go to every other resource. The class is fully on Aleks and they don't match what is done for quizzes at all!
This professor would teach something and not explain things well, it doesn't help that with the number of modules you would get from 5 to 13 a week. If you can avoid her do it at all cost.
I am genuinely passionate about chemistry, but unfortunately, she makes me want to not even try it. I study as much as possible but I cannot seem to get higher than a B on a single test. The lectures are 80% a worksheet that you work on with the people around you, and it seems as if no one knows what is going on. Avoid at all costs.
The ALEKS homework is not entirely connected to the course material, so its like you're teaching yourself for a class in order to pass a whole different class. The lecture videos are maybe 10 minutes long while the in person "lectures" are just time when we work on worksheets on topics we may or may not have learned yet. Such a convoluted mess.
Emily is the WORST. goodluck with Aleks, it doesn't pertain to anything you're reading, and as Emily says, "oh the Aleks doesn't really matter its just for points". So basically you do homework unrelated to what you're learning and then take a test on a completely different thing. This class is awful.
Strangely difficult for an intro to CHEM course, weekly chapter quizzes, very heavy on ALEKS work (abut 8-12 modules a week, due on Wednesday), you have to read the book and do every practice problem because her videos don't cover what's on the test. Class took me about 15 hours a week for a B+.
Pelton was really organized, gave lecture videos, practice questions, and office hours. People who rate her bad probably have more of an issue with content. That being said the class is entirely online, so I'm not sure why she's rated horribly because she doesn't do anything. Tests/hw graded by canvas and you teach yourself.
You do not really need to go to class if you do the worksheets ahead of time. The lecture videos are really good and you learn a lot with good notes. She is clear that she follows the syllabus so if you are going to email her about anything read it first. She will not accept late work and will make sure you went to resources before helping you.
For an online course, Pelton did a fine job teaching CHEM1015. To be successful in her class, you need to read the textbook before taking notes because it helps TREMENDOUSLY. The homework sometimes had nothing to do with the notes and took a lot of time. The class is very organized and the quizzes were easy. You just have to put in the work!
Didnt teach and was overall very condescending and disrespectful when talking with her. She wouldnt actually answer any questions in email, she would just recite the syllabus at you even when you specifically mentioned you had checked there and it has nothing to do with your question. Videos were bad and lectures were pointless. Dont take her ever.
Professor Emily Pelton is a teaching maestra! Her passion for the subject is contagious, creating an engaging and inclusive classroom. With unwavering dedication, she fosters a collaborative environment, providing personalized mentorship that extends beyond academics. A true gem in academia!
In the beginning of the semester, I used just the textbook which I found kind of confusing so I switched to her videos. Her videos were fine, they made sense to me but when I got to ALEKS I had to teach myself a lot of the concepts because she didn't go over any of it. Her tests can also be kinda confusing too.
I came to UMN to be in the STEM field and Chem 1015 was the reason I'm leaving the STEM field.
The only chemistry I have learned in this class I have taught myself. Tests somehow manage to cover absolutely none of what is "taught". Have to take chem 2 and the thought of having her again made me contemplate switching colleges. Made me want to become a professor so I can get paid bank for doing absolutely nothing. Do not expect success.
thinking about this class makes me nauseous. i think its a fear response.
Difficult content for an introductory class (maybe a skill issue :/ ). The homework is soooo dreadful to go through and the weekly quizzes DON'T reflect what was on the homework. The quizzes also DON'T show you the answers even after the window to take the quiz closes so you can't see where you went wrong and learn from your mistakes. ZON'T zo it.
Syllabus is clear, no rounding + clear homework points. Everything is graded based on participation and discourages students to learn. The actual lecture is always one worksheet you do with no actual lecture. Tests are nothing on what you learn (aleks/textbook/videos/worksheets). She gives videos 2-10 min to watch at home 3-5/week as your "lecture"
Emily Pelton is an ordinary professor. She isnt the worst and isn't the best. She does have ALEKs HW every week so I suggest start on Monday because they are worth a lot of points and are due on Wednesday night. I missed one topic on ALEKS just as midnight struck and I lost 5 points out of 15 for some reason. (still dont know why).
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Your questions regarding the course content are basically useless, she will never answer your emails or help you when you need it. Her lecture videos and homework have 0 correlation to her quizzes. She has absolutely no regard for your mental health.
oof. get ready to teach yourself the aleks homework. cried a couple times because the lecture videos, which were long and pointless, the homework was completely unconnected to lecture. the quizzes weren't really connected to the lecture or the homework. you kind of just get a vague idea of chemistry. PSEO kids: not worth it at all. take AP chem.
In my opinion, if you know of a great chem program somewhere else I would take that. The master checkpoints/tests (there are 5) are only worth 15 points and she grades so hard on the open-ended question(s) that you barely get them right so prepare for that. please make use of tutors and WORK AHEAD on Aleks cause it takes soooo long! Goodluck!
The fact that this was an in-person lecture is a joke. We spent 75 minutes doing a random worksheet and the 3 minute "lecture" videos are pretty much useless. 5 exams overall and they are so annoyingly difficult for general chemistry. Please find a different professor. I got an A in intro chem and now I'm just hoping to get a C+. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
Pelton was a terrible professor who was not willing to help her students out in any way shape or form. Her class sucked and the textbook and her videos oftentimes contradicted each other. I had a very bad experience in her class.
The two main Gen Chem professors for UMN, are both terrible in my opinion but Pelton is by far the worst. Her test have nothing to do with what was in the textbook. There is so much homework yet the majority of it is pointless and won't help you pass. She does not care about her students physical and mental well being. Take Driessen instead.
ALEKS is so unconnected to the other material it may as well be its own class. Literally spent more time figuring out ALEKS than working on the actual Chemistry concepts, which were otherwise pretty simple. Also don't ever expect a response on time if you do reach out for help.
This class is very rigid with little wiggle room. Try not to get depressed mid-semester, especially during units 7-9 because it will be rough. I didn't even try to email her about my mental health because I've heard that she's not understanding at all. I will most likely receive a B, which isn't bad, but I am a pre-med student, and that scares me.
I don't have a review
This was NOT an intro class. I have never been so overwhelmed with a class in my life. Aleks is the biggest waste of time as nothing on it related to the weekly quizzes. The grad student tutors explained the content much better than Pelton did. I put in a ridiculous amount of time and effort into this class only to earn the most mediocre grade.
The class solely consisted of weekly quizzes, aleks homework, and a final exam. Nothing else. No extra credit opportunities and nothing to increase your grade at all.
If you're interested in a decline in your mental health I would recommend this course.
Lectures are meant to be "active" learning. Assignments are graded based off completion, but some of quizzes have difficult wording and some ALEKS chapters take up a lot of time. I wished there was more emphasis on the content of the quizzes and what was wrong on the homework, instead of just a completion grade.
The online lectures were clear and addressed what was found on the quizzes. However, since they were recorded in 2015 it might be time for a refresh. The ALEKS homework took 5+ hours to complete each week, and I found that I was spending time completing chem HW that should have been used for classes that are relevant to my degree.
Honestly, this course isn't as bad as everyone says it is. If you read the textbook before watching the lecture videos, take good notes, and do all the practice problems, it should be fine. The weekly quizzes do sometimes have questions that aren't covered in videos, but they're listed on the study guide, so I recommend using that to prepare.
Honestly, Pelton isn't that bad in 1015. As long as you watch her videos, you're set for the quizzes. There's some questions that are textbook only, but one trip to office hours helps you out immensely. As far as chemistry teachers go, she's okay.
Take this course if you want to get your hopes and dreams crushed.
ALEKS takes soooo much time to complete, and honestly didn't even relate to the quizzes. I could study for hours and still fail the quizzes. This class takes so much time to study and prepare for quizzes and was hard to balance with all the other work for other classes.
Everyone says she is a bad teacher, but if you guys do everything like read the textbook, do homework, and do the practice problems....... I don't know how would anyone get a grade lower than a B? Especially cause homework is such a big proportion of our grades. She is the rudest teacher I have met though and does not care about students' success!
Solely based off of homework assignments, aleks homework which can take hours to do, and a few exams. Do not recommend taking at University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Asked for a 0.03% grade bump to switch a letter grade for the course and said no. Not helpful at all with any specific questions in the course at all, get a pre typed response back.
hated this class
In my strong opinion, switch professors if you get Pelton. The class isn't too hard, just takes a lot of time, but if you ever need help or something goes wrong, Pelton will not help you. One of my friends had problems with his camera while taking a quiz, and got a 0. He asked to retake it and she said "No" as an email response lol.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class. The weekly Aleks homework is almost entirely unrelated to the weekly quizzes. If there were more connections between the two or better study materials related to the quiz, it wouldn't be a bad class.
These bad ratings are from an asynchronous introductory course that seems like it hasn't been updated in 10 years. She's a great professor for in-person gen chem, is very funny, nice, welcoming, and wants her students to do well. So many resources for help. You will do well if you ask for help and use your resources wisely.
Pelton herself is not a bad teacher but be forewarned she expects a lot of outside work for a decent grade. Most of the quizzes are solving problems in ways not taught and Pelton will only respond to emails and questions with "look at the canvas site." However, she made homework worth a lot and she rounds grades with a wide percentage gap.
Honestly Pelton is not as bad for CHEM 1015 as people say she is, but there's nothing I can say about more advanced CHEM classes
(Also took CHEM1015) Pelton herself is a great professor. Just through her announcements on Canvas you can tell she cares about her students, and she actually tries to help people understand material if they struggle. Her lectures, though not mandatory, did feel helpful in learning material. I prefer Pelton over Driessen by far.
Pelton has offered more study materials this semester than in Chem I which I appreciate, so I think she's getting better. Most of the learning is done outside of class and in-class is spent applying what you learned. I wish she would lecture more in class. She has fun demos each class though.
Pelton isn't a bad person but she struggles to prepare students for her exams. Most of the learning is done on your own!!! She values active learning more than traditional learning styles so prepare yourself for few lectures and lots of partner worksheets in class(we review them at the end of class). It is doable!
With all due respect, save yourself the misery. I am taking chem 1061 AGAIN because I was so unable to succeed with Pelton. Am now with a new professor who is caring and prioritizes the success of their students and I am excelling. It's not the course that's hard; its Pelton. I would only recommend if you are extremely independent and advanced.
"It's so bad, I want to give you a zero; but I can't so I give you a one"
Emily was completely unaccessible to us apart from her weekly "go outside and stop worrying" emails. Her lecturers made little sense & weren't helpful to the homework/test questions. All of the homework is done through ALEKs, & the entire course being asynchronous made it impossible to learn anything. There was little support & the tests were hard.
I don't why people don't like her. She explains very well and is actually a great professor.
There are some people saying that this professor is good and I can tell you that it is only the case for those are soley able to learn without there being much assistance. The chemistry office hours given for this course arent useful and the workload for this class is completely unjustifiable considering it's an introduction class.
insane amount of homework/content for an intro class. she's not that bad of a lecturer, but often what she would teach about would not help with the homework. ALEKS is terrible.
The structure just doesn't work. I don't really know whether this is her fault or not but a fully online chem class just doesn't make sense to me. Also, make sure to stay on top of things. Since 1015 online is point based rather than percent based, don't miss any assignments or it'll bite you later. Grade thresholds arent shown which annoyed me..
Do you want to go into a health field? Or are you just interested in chemistry? Well, look LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE. Come one, come all, to this CIRCUS of a class. "EP" is the ring leader and you're the elephant on the tightrope-- you're scared and SCREWED all four months of this class. Study all night or don't; you'll still get a 50%. Best of luck.
The class workload is heavy, but if you stay on top of things and use resources like the textbook and unstuckstudy AI for study prep, you can do well. Just be prepared for Professor Pelton's particular teaching style and lack of direct assistance. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
The combination of video lectures provided and the textbook are not very helpful, and felt that the content taught through lectures and the textbook was entirely different from the homework and weekly quizzes. Emily Pelton is not quick to respond to emails either, making this online class that much more difficult.
The absolute worst. Save yourself the time. She just doesn't care about any of her students and you can tell. I got both As in chem1015 and chem 1061. Now I have her in chem 1062 and I want to cry. Honestly she needs to get fired with her attitude and her mindset. (Im switching professors and its only week 2)
Her quizzes don't match the assigned homework.
Emily Pelton is the worst professor in the chem department and arguably the worst professor at the U. She was awful and didn't care about her students. She never responded to emails and when she did, all she said was "It's in the syllabus" if you had a question or concern. She made me cry multiple times. PLEASE AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS.
I know some people don't like Pelton but I didn't mind her. I rarely emailed her so maybe that helped. Class was structured pretty well and was manageable online
She basically puts you through one semester of pure pain. She acts oblivious to her horrible teaching.
Terrible, do not take.
if you have time i would say drop it and get ur chem credit from another school. im sure she may be a wonderful person, but she is not a good teacher. this class will kill your free time and make you want to never look at chemistry again. chem 1 is a hard class by nature, but this experience was the worst academic journey of my life.
She doesn't lecture, this is essentially a self-taught class. She'll go over a couple practice problems, give you a worksheet to do, then give you the answers to the worksheet. Since she doesn't teach, you instead have to watch tons of sub-par videos that she records and posts. I wish she'd just lecture like a normal professor.
I don't have anything else to say about this professor. If you have another option, RUN AWAY FROM HER
She gives useless worksheets that are due at the end of class time. I learned nothing in class and she makes things so much more difficult than they need to be. Lots of tedious homework that does not actually teach which is hard since it is a flipped classroom. Pick the other professor if you want to not fail!!!!!
I'm honestly not sure why Pelton is rated as bad as she is. She was a perfectly reasonable college professor. Yes, the course is heavy on coursework outside of class but the examples and lectures are very helpful.
She was great in my opinion. It's an effort based class so as long as you're doing all the work assigned and actively learning, you'll do fine. Gen chem does flipped classrooms so no matter what prof u choose, it will be the same.
As they say, my friends, you don't want to cross lines with her. YOU DON'T!!! Find anyone else! She's kinda the opposite of the kind, caring people you're gonna meet like Mipha from Botw. The point is as per your best shot, avoid her, even if it means not taking chem that semester, I learned my mistake. (I had to add that, I just finished totk 😙)
Her review is likely based on those who did not put much effort into the class or due to the teaching style because I had no issues with her and I thought that she did very well. The teaching style is watching online lecture videos with comprehension questions. In class, you work on worksheets with the ability to ask as many questions as you want.
She's pretty awful. She doesn't respond to the simplest of questions like is there class tomorrow, go check on the calendar. She teaches in the most horrible confusing way so you won't learn anything from her and have to learn everything yourself. She and all chem use the sane giant room to teach at the U and there's too many kids.
It's honestly absurd she still teaches at the U. Notoriously rude and difficult professor, especially over email. Blames any issues that arise on something else (canvas, you, etc) and schedules exams over a 24 hour window, including during class time, which was hard with my schedule, and she is not flexible or willing to work with you at all. 0/10
She goes very fast and answers your questions as if you already have very well knowledge of the subject. If you are taking her, be prepared to re-watch her lecture videos over and over again (short, but honestly an overload of information), and be prepared to learn everything by yourself.
She is such a fantastic and caring professor. Her lecture videos are clear and straight forward. She gets a bad rap because she teaches the chemistry class that everyone who is bad at chemistry has to take, and if you work hard and do the practice problems you will breeze right through this class!
LOVED this class. Really easy first half of semester, gets tougher near the end so watch out. She is great at lecturing and expects participation. The grading is very diverse and there isn't too much weight on one area. WATCH the videos she posts and take good notes, and do worksheets fully; both are useful for everything including exams.
Professor Pelton was honestly not a bad professor. She didn't lecture in class a lot, but that was mainly how the class was structured (flipped) but her videos were really good. The class is pretty dependent on exams, so make sure to watch all the videos and do all the homework quizzes and Aktiv assignments, and look through them to study.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Vey hard grader, goes out of her way to make the exam difficult. She is the kind that smiles at you and then immediately gives you F afterwards. She has to go every possible way to stress and disappoints you.
Every student I have spoken to on campus dislikes her. She moves very fast so be prepared to teach yourself half the time. She is rude. I took CHEM 1062 and withdrew from her class. I then had Bantz and she was so much better. I am surprised she got a couple of good reviews if you do poorly on the tests you are done for. DO NOT CHOOSE HER!!!
I do not know how in the WORLD this professor got good reviews. Please save yourself and DO NOT take any class she is teaching. First of all if you do poorly on one exam there is no saving you. Her teaching also makes no sense, you practically teach yourself. and shes so passive aggressive for no reason. If you care for your wellbeing, SPRINT
Do not pick this professor she is very bad at teaching, notes are not posted online so you have to show up to lecture even when sick. She walks around to make sure you are doing your work. BFFR
I failed the first exam terribly, but with lots of studying, I managed to bring my grade back up greatly. I've attended many of her office hours, and she was extremely sweet. This class has a lot of homework and requires a lot of studying, but doing well is possible. My advice is to be prepared and STUDY! You will be fine.
Reaching her outside of class is difficult, and every other review on here about how tests are hard and she moves fast is correct. Overall, there could be worse, but she is definitely not great
I love Emily Pelton, she gets too much hate. She is honestly a great professor!
If you are in the Chemistry Life Sciences sequence, switch out of it ASAP. All professors are terrible and Pelton is not an exception.
I honestly liked her style of teaching because she didn't just read off of slides. There is extra credit if you attend class, so if you take notes and put in the time to understand the material the class is doable. Tests are definitely difficult but not impossible.
This class felt like I was fighting for my life, I have never gotten anything lower than a B before. Half of your grade is on tests so don't take this class if you're not a good test taker like me. Lectures progressively got less useful through the semester. Very hard for a general course. A plus is you don't have to buy a textbook though.
She's a pretty decent professor in that she does not simply read off of slides and instead writes everything live; I really enjoyed this aspect of her lectures. However, you seriously need to study / read the textbook before class since she teaches like you should already know everything. Insanely tough course.
1082 is just hard, but Pelton gets a bad rep. She's a good lecturer and makes you participate for iClicker points. Tests are difficult, but manageable. You NEED to go to lecture prepared and have read the textbook before. Going to lecture alone is not enough to secure an A, you need to practice. Tests are in person on paper with MCQ and FRQs.
Dr Pelton had an interesting way of structuring 1062, where she would do worksheets during lecture but give you videos to take notes outside of class. I've seen this done before, but it just didn't work for me. Just do the homework, ask questions during lecture, and participate in lab (if you have a bad TA the labs and reports will be terrible).
Chem is just a hard class and her lectures were pretty straightforward. Many people may not realize that for chem, you need to spend a lot of extra time outside of class to study. She was very helpful during office hours (I went every week). Tests were hard but chem tests are usually difficult. Make sure to do practice problems and study early.
avoid if you can
I honestly don't think Pelton is a bad professor. I just think she gets a bad rep because the class is astronomically hard, but if you put in the work, you will get a better grade than you think. Do every single worksheet, homework assignment, and video quiz, and it will create a decent buffer for the mastery checkpoints.
Do not take any course with this professor. It will make you want to drop the class 2 weeks in. She grades extremely tough, while also not being helpful during lecture. She shows little to no compassion for any students regardless of who they are or their grade. I DO NOT recommend, try to get any other professor for chemistry.
Took Fall 2023. The format was flipped, with lectures online and doing worksheets in-class; going to class felt like a waste of time, as the worksheets were largely not challenging and could be completed in 15 minutes. It's an intro chem class, so Pelton doesn't have much control over content or grading. The lecture videos were fine.
The class itself can be challenging, but as long as you come to lectures and do the homework you will be fine. Really, your grade is dependent on what you chose to do, Emily gives you all the opportunities to be successful. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to do well you need to go because she does not post lectures. She is very nice.
The worst. DEI
I really liked Emily! She is great at answering questions in class: takes time to ask if anyone has questions. She writes the notes as she goes so that it is easy to follow along. After going over topics she does example and practice questions which are very helpful. Before quizzes she also posts study guides so you know what topics are on the quiz
Emily was a great professor! She was constantly answering and open to questions in lectures. During lectures, we did a lot of extremely helpful practice problems. The lectures have extremely similar content to the quizzes. Her lectures were paced extremely well and easy to follow! I would 100% recommend choosing Emily as a professor for CHEM1015!
The class can be challenging because she does go a bit fast with her lectures. A lot of quizzes but there is not too much content in each so it is manageable. She takes the time to answer questions which is very helpful.
Emily was great. I'm confused by her rating. As long as you're doing the homework and practice questions assigned every week and actually try to understand the content from it, you'll be fine. I highly recommend going to class since she'll sneak some non-homework related concepts from lecture in the quizzes. Easy weekly quiz questions, no midterms.
In this class, you will be thrown into lectures where you understand none of the material that is presented. Rarely will she actually teach about material in class; instead she will post videos as homework, where often she just talks over the worksheets you did in class the day before. Exams are tough and are only 15 points, so no room for error.
I honestly don't think this professor is bad. Chem is just hard, and for this course especially you need to study a lot outside of class and not fall behind. Structure was videos and homework outside of class and then lectures going over worksheets. She was very approachable in office hours, and the final test is weighted the same as the rest.
Pelton was extremely condescending. Attendance is not required, but everything in lecture is her hand-written notes. She has online quizzes every Monday, but she uses Honorlock. Some of the content on the quizzes isn't even presented in lecture so don't be surprised. She is degrading of students and moves too fast for genuine comprehension.
