so hard, doesn't teach you anything
Worst professor ever. Physco on a power trip.

she is the devil
Very Hard and not very helpful
Horrible
Please....DO NOT TAKE HER....if you do it is based at your OWN risk. She is extremely hard and detail oriented. She is a nice person but a BAD teacher. Even if you understand and do the material prepare for a BAD grade.
She needs to be fired!!!!!
i hate this woman. she has completely destroyed any sense of math i used to have (coming from a student who got straight A's in calculus in high school). she IS the devil.

Stay away from this class at all costs!!!!
possibly the worst instructor I have EVER HAD!!! I haven't learned a thing all yr except how to expect D's and F's on work I think deserves A's or B's...do NOT take her!!! This would the the worst decision of your college career... SHE IS THE DEVIL
has to lower her grading standards so that 90% of the class can pass at the Bentley scale...how sad
This person doesnt teach, she contradicts herself constantly, and doesnt write questions (she writes statements and expects you to answer them). Taking this course is asking to lower ANYONES GPA. People are telling the truth she is the Devil!
Professor Roth likes math her way, obscure. If you can't think about math problems the same way she does, then get out of her class. But if you are one of the few that can (like myself), its easy street to 4.0s. I've taken 4 classes with her so far, 4.0'e
Very hard class, especially honors. Don't take if you dont have to!!
Everyone says she is so hard but i had no problem in that class. If you are good at math take her. The tests are almost carbon copies of previous years and you she gives them to you too.
My class started with 30 people and only 13 took the final!
Teacher is terrible! Wish i got out of the class. Don't take her it will be the worst decision of your life!
If you get into her class GET OUT! She won't teach. she'll SHOW you a problem & expect you to know it HER way and every which way she could possibly ask it. also grades VERY unfairly, and DO expect D's & F's on work thats deserves an A or B. Also she gives you concepts on tests that she never taught
I didn't think she was hard. I came out with a 3.7 which i think sucked bad. Most people found her hard so if you hate math my suggestion is to not take her.
She can't do the math herself then gives 45 math problems due the next class which she barely went over in class. If she did go over them in class she prolly messed up the math equation, and then sends you out to do the work. Avoid her if your not stronf in math.
H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E!!! People are not lying, this woman is awful! Everything must be done if her own weird ways! Concepts in class compared to those on the test are so different! Don't take her unless you're really good in math.
Class is very hard, subject is very different that most math classes. If you like programming you'll get this class. Testes are easy since she gives you past quizes with answers. Cases are very hard but she if you go to her office she's very helpful. But try to stay away from this class.
EXTREMELY different than math, in fact, hardly math at all. Very harsh grader, must be done exactly her way. Not too hard to get decent grade, i got a 3.3 and i bombed the final miserably, but a huge amount of time and preparation required. Not worth it in my book. I wouldnt recommend it.
Definately not a math class. Doesn't explain anything clearly. AVOID at all costs
Class is very tough. She doesnt explain the topics very well. Extra help with her is useless; she asks you to explain what you dont understand... Spent over 15 hours on the project, meeting with her multiple times, and got a C-. Do not take her unless you already understand the material that she is teaching.
She's a really nice person, but her teaching methods are questionable. I really like the way she grades (I think it's strict, but fair).
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!! do not take this crazy woman.
So I only took her for First Year Seminar. She tries to make something out of a nothing requirement. Very unhelpful in advising for courses. If you get her as an advisor, get another one quickly.
Awesome teacher! You will definately learn a great deal in her class and she is an amazing person! Loved her!! Definately take her if you want a challenge and have any interest in learning about math.
She's alright, the thing that's good about her is that if u do well on the final u'll probably do well in the class cause she will usually discount the mid-term cause everyone does poorly on it (this happens in most of her classes).
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
EASILY THE WORST TEACHER ON THE PLANET
She just.. doesnt know how to teach. Even 1on1 she'll try to get you to explain to her concepts that you just specifically told her you don't understand.
umm.. retirement.
Take the class if you like Math. She is flexible with the grades and is always willing to give extra help.
Emmy is awesome, if you like math just show up to class and you'll do just fine
if you havent taken calc you'll do fine. she uses her own methods that dont make sense to anyone whos had calc, and refuses to use a calculator or any methods from this century. Don't punish yourself in this class, the efforts not worth the grade
She's a good teacher, and she tries to make you want to learn. She gets frustrated when people don't participate, but the tests are easy if you pay attention in class. The material gets difficult once in a while, but you get cheat sheets for tests, so you can basically ace every test if you use the right example problem as your cheat sheet.
great professor who really wants her students to do well. always available for help if your willing to put in the effort. Tests are tough and you need to study a lot for them. Though the 4.0 is tough, it is definitely possible. She'll throw out your midterm and count your final for both if you do better on it.
She is an excellent teacher who really wants her students to do well. Always available for extra help, and challenges her students. I have taken her 3x (131, 139, 223) and gotten 4.0's all three times, so success is possible with effort.
The best math teacher I have ever had, hands down!
Emmy is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. She has office hours available almost everyday and if not she will make time for you. She is very passionate and actually WANTS you to learn. She can be a little OCD about details in your work but not a big deal. 5 quizes. Drops the lowest. Midterm (can be dropped) and final. Taking her again!
Definitely one of the hardest math teachers at Bentley. She is an extremely friendly prof though. She goes out of her way to make the class fair and give you all the help you need. Only complaint is the amount/difficulty of the homework and not using class time well to go over problems.
I have had many great professors at Bentley, none have given as much to the students during class and during office-hours as Emmy. Emmy loves learning, loves teaching, and is incredible at both. If you are at all interested in math take her for something, anything.
She was harder than she was in MA 131. She grades on process which can be difficult because you feel like you lose points for no reason at times. However, no professor at Bentley has ever been more readily available to help me than she was. She was so kind all the time. She even gave me her home phone number to call her if I had questions.
By far the best math teacher I've ever had. Always available if you need help, and genuinely cares that you understand the material. MA139 was much harder with her than MA131, but as long as you're willing to put the extra work in you'll benefit. Homework got to be a little much, but she drops the lowest quiz and homework grades.
VERY CHALLENGING CLASS!! not a typical easy 4.0 math class. Instead if you want easy 4.0, don't take her. Very clear in explaining materials. One of best math prof out there. Recommended for math nerds like me.
DO NOT TAKE HER. takes points off for no reason. have to write every little detail and step. hard tests. strange and distracted clothing. DONT DO IT.
Great teacher for math students who are both interested in the topic and who have a genuine affinity for math. She really cares about having her kids learn. If you are looking for an easy 4.0, do not take!
Is is not any easy class but she is a great professor. She always post her office hours and she is there alot. If you pay attention and are somewhat good at Calc you will do fine. Calc isn't my thing and i still did fine. She is an amazing teacher.
Roth isn't as hard as these comments say but she definately isn't easy. She just expects a lot in a specific way. Different teaching style, but is till real helpful. Need to give alotta effort for a decent grade.
DO NOT TAKE especially if you have already been taught. She won't let you use certain rules that you already know. On tests she grades your work, not your answer. The way she wants you to do your work is rediculous. I took AP calc in high school..As and Bs...i have a D in her class
She is a nice lady and I enjoyed her class. She grades hard but i got a 4.0, its not ridiculous. Your work has to be detailed and the way she wants it and if you do that you'll do well. You kind of have to understand math to get her teaching, if you don't then you might find this class difficult.
Pro: 1.Dedicated Teacher 1a.She offers lots of opportunities (extra credit, drops poor grades, lots of office hours) 1b. Wants to see effort and improvement, she actually CARES 1c.FAIR:Teaches stuff highschool Calc kids know(so others can learn too) Con: 1.Tough, Rigorous 2.Fast-Paced 3.Levels playing field for new Calc students
Very good teacher, tough tests, always tries to even playing field for ppl who didn't take Calc in hs. Her graduate students seem to love her, she set them on the right path (actuarial). I did not do well in her class, but there's a good reason to take her class if you're actually interested in quantitative fields. Cheat sheets&dropped grades r gud
Emmy is the best teacher at Bentley. She is difficult but she's always more than willing to help when student's need it. She is picky about details but with good reason; forces you to pay attention when solving problems. You will walk out of her classes having learned a lot. Take as many classes with her as you can.
One of the best professors at Bentley. She is tough, very tough, but you will be able to find integrals in a snap after taking the course. Just play by her rules and don't fight them and you will be fine. She is always willing to help out students as long as you are willing to put in the effort. Very sweet lady.
Professor Roth was my most helpful teacher. She has a lot of office hours and would explain things better there. She makes you work hard but you actually learn the material and she curves every test so it's still easy to do well if you put in effort. You get cheat sheets for every quiz and test as well
Emmy is easily the best teacher at Bentley. Her level of commitment to helping students understand the work is unparalleled. She is beyond caring and offers advice for general class advising, actuarialmath advising as well as career assistance. Most of her classes if your final is better than your average, then your final is your new grade.
She gives a decent amount of homework but nothing unreasonable or excessive. Weekly quizzes that cover the previous week's topic. Drops a few quizzes for the semester. Extremely helpful in office hours and clearly know what she is talking about. Would take her again.
Emmy is probably one of the best professors that i have ever had at Bentley. She knows what she is talking about and is always there to help students. She always has a ton of office hours and is always on campus. She gives weekly quizzes that are pretty hard, no calculators allowed but you do get a double sided cheat sheet.
Hands down one of the best math professors at Bentley. Had her for two math courses and in both she was a fair grader, there for you when you needed extra help, and an all around outstanding teacher. She is tough but fair and willing to help. If you want to learn, take her.
Best math teacher at Bentley but if you want an easy 4.0 don't take her. No matter what grade you leave her class with your math skills will be way better than when you started. She is always available outside of class and is also the actuary advisory, so definitely a good lady to know.
Emmy is a brilliant professor who definitely knows what she's talking about and is VERY dedicated to helping students learn. She has tons of office hours, and is typically at the school by around 6am. Her classes are very difficult, but you will leave them knowing the information very well because of it. No textbook for this class.
Clearly prof Roth has been rating herself on this website. Bad prof to take. GPA killer and just on overall miserable class period to sit through every day. Thinks way to highly of herself. Unreasonable.
Doesn't explain the topics well and always tries to rush through new material because we're "falling behind". Would not suggest taking her class.
Emmy is a hard professor, that is well known. For actuarial students, this is a good thing because she makes her class harder than the real exam. If you pass the real exam you get a 4.0, and if your final is higher than your current grade, that becomes your grade. She also holds good office hours. People who don't do well in her classes don't try.
She is a very difficult teacher but you learn a lot. This is not the class to take if you want an easy 4.0. Requires a lot of work outside of class because her weekly tests are difficult. She requires preciseness in her quizzes when writing out solutions. But definitely take her if you are thinking about Actuarial Science as she is department head.
She loves teaching, learning. If you like math, and want to do well, SHE is the ONE that will help you thrive.
Look, the purpose of this course is to prepare you for Exam FM - which is inherently difficult. Emmy teaches the material incredibly well and does everything in her power to help you succeed. Very flexible with grading structure and 4.0 if you pass exam. Cares about everyone. Hardest I've ever worked, but most I've ever learned. 10/10 recommend
Emmy is the best. Her classes will never be easy. It will be a lot of work and she pushes you very hard. However, she is 100% dedicated to her students and always available outside of class. You will do well if you work hard throughout the semester.
Emmy is the best. A wise and inspirational professor. She gives amazing lectures at a fast pace with a huge amount of practice. Sufficient amount of office hours with delicious candies. Definitely help students pass the exam FM. Don't be afraid to take her class, because she made these horrible courses doable for students. 10/10 recommend.
Emmy is the most caring prof I've had at Bentley. She helped me as I struggled and nearly failed this course. She knows all her students extremely well and she teaches because she loves her students and loves what she does. Although I struggled she did everything possible to help me pass this class and I ended up improving a lot on the final exam.
Professor Roth is a lovely person. However, I left her class understanding almost none of the material for Exam FM. She is a bit chaotic during class and does not create a comfortable learning environment. Nonetheless, she tries her best to help during office hours and is a genuinely kind and generous person. Loved Emmy, hated her teaching MA357.
I would not have passed FM without her help and pushiness. Her class is a lot of work around 15 hours per week of hw which you should do around 10hours if you hope to pass FM. Her quizzes are harder than FM but worth it. Initially, her class is a bit messy but she covers up for it later on as she is very helpful during office hours.
Emmy is an amazing person and really cares about your success. But Emmy's teaching style is very unique (freeform/unstructured) and if you're not in tune with it it's hard to pass. Exam FM is a hard exam so it makes sense MA 357 is a hard course, but if you're willing to put in the effort, and you understand her teaching style, you can succeed.
For all classes with Emmy - they will be very hard but you will learn and she will teach you well. If you want to learn, take her. MA357 is a tough course - I got a C before being bumped up to an A for passing exam FM. Don't fall behind pace early on like I did. She also bakes chocolate chip cookies for her classes occasionally which is a plus!
Means well but grades unnecessarily hard and takes points off for the smallest things. I lost %10 on a quiz for a stray eraser mark.
If you took Calculus in high school stay away from Emmy Roth. Regardless of a right answer, if you use any method other than the outdated one she requires you will do poorly on every single quiz (which are every week). If not for the scale, which helps slightly, I would fail. Even with knowing the material and getting answers right, you fail.
Emmy is an amazing professor and I'm always happy to have her! This class was a lot of work, but unlike many of my other online classes, I felt I was able to actually learn a lot. I really enjoyed how she made sure to keep students involved in class. Still, I had some problems with the class in how harsh the grading was.
SHE'S THE BEST PROF YOU CAN GET IN BENTLEY PERIOD
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! This is the hardest class I've ever taken by far. Emmy Roth is a great person, but the hardest professor I've ever had. She takes off credit for everything because she wants everything done a certain way down to the way you right your name. There is a lot of homework due over the weekends and weekly quizzes, which are hard!
Emmy is easily one of the best professors at Bentley. She gives great feedback and cares about how you do in the course. She holds office hours everyday and is always willing to help. Does give a lot of work and need to stay on top of outside studying to do well
If there is any other options for professors your class take them instead. Horrible professor and extremely tough grader, I learned all of the material in high school and still did terrible in the class. I had asked in class multiple times to go over an example of what we just learned so we could understand how to do it and she said no.
She was unnecessarily tough when it came to grading. You could get all of the answers right and still get a C on a quiz for not following her strict rules during their class. My GPA was heavily affected by her grading.
Engages everybody in class, you look around and nobody is bored. Clear and concise. Yes she hawks you for cutting corners with your work/notation. People hate on this but forget that she is super forgiving with bs mistakes, and will drop at least everybody's lowest quiz grade. Super available for help too, and works to develop those falling behind
The homework load is forgiving, but that is the only forgiving thing about her. We are given weekly quizzes with class average of 50. We were taught almost nothing in class and expected to work on problems at home. I worked 25 questions every week and finish all her practice quizzes and still being harassed by her saying 'need more practice'.
To prepare you for the FM exam, there is no better professor. Do problems outside of class. She says that you don't have to be smart, just hard working, but if you aren't smart be prepared to spend multiple hours a day just trying to get by. Not for the faint hearted.
She's an angel. I was in over my head in the class and she did everything to help me pass. Would zoom call for tutoring when I needed. Quizzes are brutal but she curves nicely. Lectures were fast-paced but prepared you for the homework. Very particular about how you did your work but would excuse simple errors. Would bake good cookies for the class
I never write reviews but Emmy is someone who has literally changed my life. She is easily the best professor I have ever had. I have learned a lot and she is genuinely an inspirational figure. Her class is very hard and she will push to your extent but in the end, it's always worth it! Don't take her if you want an easy A!!
Strict grader, difficult weekly quizzes. Lots of material. Would not take again.
Very direct.Engages everybody who wants it. Praises students when deserved. Allows cheat sheets. Drops few lowest quizzes, will replace midterm grade w ur final grade if ur final is better. Reachable almost whenever outside of 7p-6:30a on any day. Wrote done-out answer key for our textbook. Gives A's to thoswho pass class and the following FM exam
Is extremely purposeful with what she teaches and how. Avoids theory and complex formulas. Very eager to challenge logic and has high standards. No powerpoints, all whiteboard. Will work with you until the very end if you humble yourself and seek to do better. Willing to throw out every bad grade if final exam is done well enough. Teaches with love
I took this class as a first-year, and it was easily my hardest class. There are weekly quizzes - which are hard (and humbling), but she drops the lowest two. Don't take this class unless you are seriously considering a math major, or else you will be spending 10+ hours a week doing practice problems to scrape a B. Wrong class if you want easy 4.0.
Emmy is such a good teacher if you want to learn, if you do not want to learn math and just want to take a class and get an A DO NOT TAKE HER. Be ready to not get an A because she grades extremely hard, but it pays off because you come out of her class knowing so much more.
Known on campus as a very difficult professor. I took this course (Calc 2) because I wanted to, but she gave a quiz every week, loads of homework, and her exams were hell. On the quizzes/ exams she allows a formula sheet and the homeworks are good review for the quizzes. She cares about what she's teaching and use her office hours to your advantage
There is no better professor to teach this Exam FM prep course than Emmy. She is easy to reach outside of class, but be prepared to put in >10 hours of studying per week to understand the material for the weekly quizzes. All the grades are quizzes, the midterm and the final, but if you pass the FM exam in June, she will change your grade to an A.
She is caring and sweet, but get ready to spend a lot of time doing problems if you want to get a good grade. Half of the class dropped/withdrew, and the class average is B, so if you want a challenge, it's up to you.
Very tough grader. A great teach and you will learn a lot but the class is not set up for you to get a good grade. Quizzes every week, mid term and final. Mid term can be dropped if you get a higher grade on the final.
Extremely knowledgable on topics and facilitates learning due to her abilitity to deeply break down a topic and answer all questions about it. weekly quizzes, but she breaks down what went well for people and where people struggled. Her class is very challenging, but she makes that known to you at the beginning and is there for you at every step.
Emmy is an amazing professor, but this is a very difficult class with tough problems. In my opinion, we didn't work enough problems in class, and there were not enough practice problems. Grading is rough and she kept the class average at a B/C range. All in all, it's an Emmy class and just very difficult.
Prepare to put in the work for this challenging yet rewarding course. The quizzes are tough, but the professor is genuinely invested in helping you succeed. Utilize office hours and unstuckstudy for study support.
I have had better math professors. I would not recommend! Please take another if possible !!
