I really liked her. She was nice and wanted everyone to understand history. She definitely has a passion for history. You have to go to class, but her quizzes weren't hard. You write two papers. Discussion is boring. Take a Final and a Midterm. If you go to class everyday its not hard.

I thought she was a good teacher. Overall, it's not the most exciting course because it's a gen ed history class. But she's knows what she's talking about and it isn't a hard class if you go to the lectures. You really don't have to do the readings. The worst part is how she stresses participation during discussion, it's 20% of your total grade.

I hated coming in at 8 a.m. but if I had a later time, it probably wouldn't have been too bad. The reading is A LOT and it's hard to keep up with it. The essays need to be specific and contain loads of analysis. Tests weren't too bad, just review your notes from lecture. You have to participate in discussion though.

I did not go to a lot of lectures and did very well in this class. The test are very difficult if you do not like to write or study. Go to the small group classes that are once a week and don't be afraid to participate. When you get your test grades be sure to read the feedback because it really helps for the future exams. Not a challenging course.

Her test are completely open ended, and require a good amount of detail but you never know what to study. If you ask for study tips or what to focus on all you'll get is "The notes" even with detailed notes you could study the wrong thing and fail the course. Insanely hard for a gen ed.

Dr. Westkaemper will make you think about history and pop culture in extremely new ways! The readings she assigns are interesting and necessary to participate in discussions, which is a part of your grade in her classes. She also provides a lot of opportunities for analysis of magazines from the early 1900s, which was fun and hands on!

Her lectures were dry and boring. If you know a lick of US history or remember anything from your US history class from high school then this class will come off as easy. Since the lectures are just her standing behind the podium regurgitating the same stuff you learned from high school.

worst prof ive had. makes you write a crazy number of papers... all short, and then gets mad that you didn't write a PhD level knowledge-paper in the 500 word-limit paper. grading criteria is so vague... she grades so harshly, and her reasoning behind the grades given were always so ridiculous. lectures are incredibly dry and boring. dont take.

I had to do 6 papers over my course of this class and it was definitely straining. No specific textbook but a lot of novels and online readings, only about 30-35% percent of those were enjoyable. She is very kind and helpful during office hours (so I give her credit for that), but in class she is very monotone and seemingly strict.

If I could say one thing about Dr. Westkaemper, it is that she is very fair. Her tests don't try to trick you unlike other professors and the grading criteria is extremely clear. This class involved quite a bit of reading so maybe avoid if you aren't into that, but you can tell she knows her stuff. I found her to be a very effective teacher.

Very smart professor who shares her genuine passion for history. Be ready to read and write in this class so if that's not your style, avoid it. If you participate in the once-a-week discussions and do well on the take-home quizzes, you'll be fine. The final paper was a true pain and really hard but other than that the class wasn't too bad.

Lectures absolutely suck and can be skipped, once a week discussions can not be. You have very little grades so you need to do good on the few things that are graded. Each test is on so much material and they are very hard to study for because of this.

Dr. Westkaemper is by far the most understanding professor I have ever had. Her class is lecture heavy but she is willing to help in any way so everyone comprehends the material. There is also a discussion once a week where you need to participate to get a good grade but she appreciates all comments and makes it where no one feels judged.

Her voice is very boring, and it's a very boring class. She just reads off a slideshow. When it comes to the writing in her class, she's very specific, so if you don't have exactly what she had in mind, you get points off. She's also not very flexible or understanding when it comes to deadlines.

After looking at the reviews here, I must write one. I had a wonderful time learning about history through Dr. Westkaemper. Other reviews have stated that her lectures are "monotone and boring" -- these reviews must come from those students who sit through lectures playing games instead of truly hearing out Dr. Westkaemper. Do your due diligence!
