She got an attitude problem. Not helpful at all. But the course is easy tho!!!
Shes the grupiest, meanest teacher I have ever had. She is definately not a prof you feel comfortable asking questions, she treats anyone who asks her anything like the biggest idiot. I do not like her at all!!!!!!!!!!
Emma is the quintessential fretter. You can tell she just got her PhD - she cares too much about her students! Somewhat lacking in mathematical capability, she can spend way way too much time explaining things. Overall though, an above avg econ prof.
She got attitude problem...She tells students to "shut up" in the class...She just gave out 8pages midterm for 50min...All like explain this and explain that..Even I can teach better than her..The worst and meanest prof ever in my life..
Her exam is quite hard.......
Avoid her...seriously...this is the worst econ course I've ever taken in Uvic. Mid term is only 50 min but the exam is tooooo long and of course our class average is very low.
Very hard teacher. As the term progressed u learn to like her more. But at the start she is a jerk. Eventually she becomes a better teacher. Still dont recommend taking a class with her.
At first I thought she was crazy, But if you went to her office hours she was extremly helpful and made Economics quite interesting. I would recommend Econ 330 but only take 313 if you have too in order to graduate.
Emma is the most helpful and briliant professor that I ever met. She can explain economic concept VERY well. I will never forget that she said when the Maths doesn't help, think of ECONOMICS!
I loved her,such a great prof!!!
the material is difficult. Her practice exercises are the same on quizzes and tests, so do them! She's very helpful and will tell you whats on the exam if you just ask. She may seem ignorant at first, but your opinion will change as the course continues.
She's a great prof. Her first midterm was too difficult, but after that the class was very fair and worthwhile taking. If you go to class and do the assignments, you'll do fine.
Demanding. Do the work and you'll do fine.
Emma has a real passion for economics and it shows. She works increadibly hard to allow her students to learn and succeed in her course. She is one of the few professors (anywhere) that sets up a university class to actually display the knowledge level of students through the marks they recieve. In addition, the students learn the material.
LOVE HER. She is passionate, knows what she is talking about, entertains questions. Her problem sets actually change you to think and look beyond the number and see the economics, but her midterms are fair. If you do the problem sets, you'll understand and you will do well!
good prof, not easy but fair
awesome prof! She is really entertaining, helpful, fair and knows what she teaches. Her notes are well-organizaed and tests are fair. made me look at pollution abatement from the differenet perspectives!! Take her class if you can!
again, awesome prof as I already said in April. haha. I love her! I usually end up skipping almost all 8:30 classes, but I didn't skip hers (unless I was sick or something). Impressive. hahaha. She is absolutely the best econ prof, and I wish she could teach all of my econ classes! again, take her class!!
AMAZING! Class
Do the problem sets and sample/past exams, and you will do okay in this class. Friendly prof. She explains well and encourages discussion in class.
I think the class itself had potential but my interest in the environmental aspect decreased when she said she was an SUV driving person and didn't really care about the consequences of her driving to the env/future gnrations. Morally she just did not sit right with me. The class was hard, don't miss any (and I mean any!!!) lectures or your screwed
The person in below is a retard don't listen to him/her. Emma is awsome, the mid term is easy as long as you study all the material she gives you. i am an international student with poor english + i m always late to class. i did well without going to the TA class he was uselss..
Actually, before you start calling people retard, you should make sure you are both rating the same class. Easy professor, never went to class, went to a few labs till I realized that the TA was probably baked half the time. Final was super easy, & the group project was a joke.
Slack.
definitely slack
Very good professor. No textbook needed for her courses since she has very good notes. Do all of the problem sets and read over the notes at least 3x before the midterm and you will do well. If you can do most or all of problem set questions then her midterms will be easy. Watch out for multiple choice, though: 5 marks each on a 60 mark midterm.
Emma is a easy prof, 313 is the hard part. If you do the problem sets and you understand the material you will easily get an A or B. If you're not willing to put in the time this class will not seem easy. I didn't go to any classes and the TA was funny but had a poor understanding of the material. Midterms are easier than the final imo.
She`s got attitude problems.
Does deviate from the point an awful lot but then again im in a 100 level course. I feel like she babies us a bit much, which is unnecessary, since the class is not hard and as a result fewer and fewer people come to class
Digresses a lot, but lecture slide notes are clear
Gave us practice sets that had an answer sheet with wrong answers. Rushed through the material. She cancelled her office hours frequently. I would never take a class with her again.
Less than a week untill our final exam, she has yet to post any new material since the last midterm ( about a month ago). Cancelled class often, seemed stressed and unorganized. Course notes were understandable. Problem sets provided only real application and comprehension or the course.
baaad auzzie. rather entertain than teach, not even that entertaining. VERY unorganized even in her office hours. posted wrong answers to practice mid term, frequently post things wrong. frustrating teacher.
Emma is fun and her classes are engaging, but she is disorganized, digresses often, and did not keep a consistent course pace. Her lecture material was often not posted till minutes before lectures. Her final very poorly represented the material taught (Entire written section was material covered in only the past 1 1/2 weeks). Again, poor pacing.
I would avoid her at all cost. She was disorganized, classes canceled and she fell behind lab schedules. Never posted midterm grades before final. Wouldn't answer emails. Was an interesting lecturer, but digresses frequently.
Tried to make class interesting but there are only so many examples you want to hear about beer and pizza. Canceled class a few times. In the last week taught 3 chapters and had to hold extra classes on the weekends. Practice test for the final was much harder than the other classes but over all the final was not so difficult. Digressed ALOT!
Very unorganized. Attempted to help us learn through examples but basics were not taught in lecture at all. I did not feel even close to prepared for the final
Unlike others I thought she was a great prof. Maybe a little unorganized but I had no interest in Economics and ended up really enjoying the class. She makes what could be very dry material interesting, and all the tests were fair. Put in a little effort and you're fine...
Very interesting lectures. Very disorganized, but get over it! The final was hard, but other exams weren't. She's opinionated too, which makes for some interesting discussions.
I agree with the others in that she's VERY unorganized. Don't bother looking up notes to print before class because they won't be posted until 15 min before...she wants you to understand the logic, not the numbers, so don't think you can just memorize formulas, it won't help!
Very disorganized teacher, takes forever to return midterms and post notes. Missed her last class of the semester which was supposed to cover material for the final, a pretty low blow for the class. Get a hold of previous midterms! This semester her first midterm was word for word copy of the previous semester one. Second was a bit different.
Disorganized teacher, takes forever to return midterms and post notes. Missed her last class of the semester which was supposed to cover material for the final, a pretty low blow for the class. Get a hold of previous midterms! This semester her first midterm was word for word copy of the previous semester one. Second was a bit different.
Terrible prof! Slides and problem sets were never posted until the last minute. Didn't show up the last day of class, and finally posted the last of the material a week before the final. If you can take 313 with someone else, do it. Props to the TA's.. labs were the only time I learned anything.
Absolutely useless class and professor. Material could've been learnt in a month just from the problem sets and lecture slides. Waste of 500 bucks in my opinion. Prof is very unorganized and impossible to reach. Never attends office hours nor responds to emails. Luckily midterms are easy. While you can't avoid 313 try to avoid this garbage prof
Didn't show for last class and gave no notice. Slow marking/return of exams, slow posting of answer keys, and slow posting of problem sets. Seemed fine at the start of term, but lots of canceled classes after first midterm. I can sympathize with illness, but I am also paying for this required course. Good TAs, though.
Could be a decent prof, but she made it pretty clear that this class was her last priority. Cancelled classes, never posted answers or notes on time, missed the 2nd midterm to go get a puppy. Didn't show up to the last class to tell us final exam format and never offered any sort of apology or excuse, just pretended it never happend.
She was good at first. But towards the end fell behind so that we were covering 1 chapter per day and she still had to cut out 2 chapters from the final, it was way too rushed.
Complete wasted of money, missed class, made us 3 weeks behind our labs and 2 months behind the other Econ class taught by a different Prof. We were so behind by the end of the term that she cut out 3 chapters from the final. Even though I passed, I left that class feeling ripped off and wanting a refund.
She had said it was her first time teaching this course, but nonetheless it's still no excuse for not teaching 3 chapters of required material. Would go off topic during lectures, never posted solutions, practice questions/midterms on time. Luckily the TA was extremely nice and helpful.
very clear, has great slides which are posted on her website, uses relevant examples, has a different way of approaching economics than rutherford (dry)
Emma was passionate about the class but it took her quite some time to post her powerpoint notes after class. Definitely do the suggested study guide problems and read the textbook. Emma is a bit confusing in lecture but is extremely helpful in office hours.
Emma is ok - i wouldnt recommend her though. class is pointless as slides are posted online and she usually gets way too sidetracked during lectures. Also, she focuses a bit too much on the environment part of economics for a beginners micro class. Midterms are pretty fair though and one can still get an A in this class with her if you study alone.
Great instructor who helped understand economics from a 'real world' perspective (for example, environmental issues, etc). This is coming from someone who had never been interested in the subject before.
Better then some of the other Economic profs. Prefer her any day over Dr. Stewart. Explains things like a real person.
Emma has to be the most useless, disorganized, and ineffective prof out there. Her crappy attitude is only outweighed by her disdain for her job. She butchers the teaching process and dumps the burden on her students. If you can avoid her classes, do.
How to do well in this class: don't listen to a word Emma says or view any of her slides, the only thing they do is over-complicate and confuse every single topic. The textbook does an enormously better job of explaining EVERYTHING and the graphs/tables will not make your head hurt like Hutchinson's. If you need help, learn Mandarin and ask a TA.
I am a biochemistry major who took this class because I wanted to learn about money..bad idea! I hated the course it self, there were a lot of identifying areas in graphs and stuff that you intuitively know would happen but now you have a law for it...Emma was boring for me, her slides were unclear, she also did not go through any application/practice problems in class. The tutorial was useless unless you knew mandarin/Cantonese...Science faculty, don't take this course!
Emma is a very intelligent prof, but she is not very good at turning complex ideas into understandable material. Sometimes I feel like she makes the concepts even more complicated. I like her personality, she's funny and a little bit sassy, not like other female profs I've had. Do her problem sets over and over again, and you'll be fine.
She explains everything in painful detail to help us, but sometimes it's overwhelming. I just did the study guide questions, her posted questions and sample exams over and over and I got an A-. The readings were painful too, but that's just what economics is. She's a helpful prof, but annoyingly disorganized too.
Emma is one of the best econ professors I've had. She obviously puts a lot of time into lecture, slide and problem set prep, which are pretty much all you need to get a stellar grade. She's funny and is available for extra help almost literally every day (and is helpful!). She doesn't make the class easy, but do the work and you'll be rewarded.
Emma is very clear and makes the theory very engaging and relates it to everyday topics, often environmental, with fantastic rants. She is the best teacher I have had at UVIC, very approachable with an open door. Tests are easy if you look at practice exams and problem sets, nothing unexpected in this class except the quality of teaching!
SUPER boring class!!! Couldn't be there for 50 minutes wihtout almost falling asleep! Talks with no pauses, really monotone. Midterms are not that hard, but there are some tricky questions (she says she doesn't trick students on the midterms but she DOES). Awful class...... Wouldn't take it if I had a chance.
I cannot find a better teacher in my mind. Her lecture is interesting and clear, and she also do good in her slides, with her slides you do not even need a textbook. Her exam is fair, if you work hard then you can get a good mark. She is also a very nice friend. I don't understand why some people rate a low mark for a wonderful teacher like Emma.
she is so excited to teach it makes it interesting
Emma was pretty good . Although her jokes were sometimes offensive. All in all she delivered and if you pay attention to her slides and visited her during office hours to explain stuff. It will be one of your favorite classes
I found Emma to be a great prof. She was very clear on what would be tested on, and gave lots of practice question that accurately reflected the level tested on the midterms/final. Lectures can be boring, but she acknowledges that and goes makes most lectures interesting and funny. A good grade is very doable if you do the work.
Emma is super chill. Let people do the make up exam because they had Kanye tickets. I swear there is no need at all to go to lecture. Stopped going completely after first semester, still kepy my A-. She posts everything; all the notes, readings, study questions, sample exams and bascially the exact breakdown of types of questions for the exams.
She was ok. but good be better at explaining topics.
One of the most unprofessional and disrespectful professor I have seen out of the 40 courses I have taken at UVic. I seriously wonder, who let her address 600 students with that attitude. Her notes are full of errors and classes are boring. She makes r@cist comments, and makes fun of lower income groups. She has a short career with this attitude.
So Emma liked making funny racial comments and probably blasphemed a lot. But overlooking those things she did well in teaching the material. If you want to succeed read her slides, do study guide questions and practise midterm and final questions. It will be an easy A for you.
Pretty good prof, but she often confuses herself in lecture. Lectures not mandatory and often not needed. Posts slides online.
Honestly, she was very mediocre. Her lectures were terribly boring, very confusing, and it's hard to keep track of where she is in explaining concepts. That being said, her midterms and final were fair. I probably would have done better had I not gone to lectures and just learnt the material on my own.
Emma is an amazing prof!!!! Shes really funny and laid back and tries to (and does) make lecture interesting. If you ever are confused GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! she is soo helpful and really tries to help everyone (she had office hours everyday!) Go to lecture, pay attention, take notes beforehand, do ALL of the homework questions and you'll be golden!
Read the book and do the study guide questions. Dont go to lecture, it s a waste of time and only tends to confuse the easily read material.
Overall, meh describes my experience in this class. If possible, take this course at Camosun. Can be confusing at times. Textbook is more helpful than the slides. The preamble for the final exam was helpful though.
I just felt like she needed to be rated hotter than this was giving credit. Pretty cool prof.
PRETTY COOL PROF
She's funny and tries to make the material as interesting as possible. She understands and 'gets' us students. She really does care about us even though it didnt seem like it at first. Sarcastic humour - ita great. Second midterm is tough, go over the slides and her very helpful review questions (and I got through the class without the textbook :p)
Emma is a great prof in the fact that she is clearly passionate about teaching, really fair concerning tests and marking, she explains all the material clearly with lots of examples and always invites students to come see her for help. She is a funny prof and I would recommend her class to anyone.
Emma i great! She takes a boring subject and through hilarious ( offensive) comments makes it more interesting.
Emma was usually pretty clear and funny. She definitely tried to make the course enjoyable and relevant to her students. Her tests were a bit difficult, but if you put in the effort you will do well.
Amazing Amazing Amazing . Ignore her off cut jokes. Do thr tudy guide and practise questions , go to her office hours for help when unclear and get the A+
Emma makes her lectures pretty engaging! Not an easy course. If you put the effort in you'll do fine. Some advice go to OFFICE HOURS!!
Hutchinson is immature, makes unnecessary and offensive jokes while trying to make the course 'fun'. The lectures are confusing. She makes it known on the first day that she will never respond to our emails... why? Out of laziness, basically. Fails to post things on time, very disorganised. Would have dropped out if it wasn't mandatory. Stay away.
Her second midterm was thought to be hard. But actually it was not. The only reason people think the exam is hard is the material is harder. Emma is a fair marker as well as a charming prof. Her office hour is unbelievably helpful.. It is easy to do well on 103, just follow her, do the sample questions before the exams, drop her office.
Emma really wants every student to succeed in her class. Her examples are fantastic, they really help for memory and clarification. Her office hours are really helpful and she loves to get to know the students who show up. If you do the readings, you'll be absolutely fine. If you just show up to lecture, you'll struggle.
Emma makes it very clear that she doesn't respond to any emails out of pure laziness, slides are confusing, she tries to make lectures more "fun" by being offensive and rude, and she teaches the most important, largest chunk of the material in the shortest amount of time. Would NOT recommend taking this class if you have the option.
Interesting lectures, material can get boring but she makes it bearable. Not that hard to do well if you read the textbook and do all of the practice questions (the final had so many questions from the practice set). The notes make a lot more sense if you actually show up to class. Not that hard to do well but you do have to put in a solid effort.
She is an okay prof and tries to make the lectures as interesting as possible, but the TA's that she chose were not very good. Overall, you have to work really hard in order to get a good grade in this class so don't skip!
Ema is rude, disrespectful, and possesses nearly every attribute of one that should NOT be a professor. She treats every student like high school students with no life experience and her jokes are disrespectful. All of her lectures are on power point and not easy to follow. Her TA's are great, and she does give a lot of office hours though.
Very underrated professor. She does a great job of simplifying important concepts so everyone can understand, since a lot of students who need to take ECON 103 don't care about economics. She's also very funny and witty. Once she became sick and Martin Farnham took over, people started to realize how effective her way of teaching the course was
Emma went on sick leave partway through, but she was still one of my favorite profs. Nice, hilarious but somehow not very approachable. Course is well organized and very interesting.
Due to illness, Emma was only here for the first month of this semester, but she is actually a funny and wild professor. Lecture notes are pretty organized expect lots of abbreviation, not need to buy textbook. Not hard to get a good mark in this class, as long as you understand the notes and do the practice questions, you can do well !!!
Lecture notes are very wordy and confusing, make sure to read textbook and do online exercises before lecture. Try reading over her slides before but she doesn't always post them early enough. Do all practice questions before exams because the exams are essentially the practice questions. Not Emma's biggest fan but not hard to do well if you try.
Emma was a really good prof. Her lectures had structure, she had a direction for the class, and she wants all her students to succeed. She is really funny and likes cracking jokes at the left-wing, union mind-set that surrounds uvic. Be prepared to do the homework, go to labs, and ready for some down-under humour!
Great lecturer! Emma's explanations economic concepts are quite clear. I loved how Emma applied economics to politics and real world examples. It made coming to lectures enjoyable and interesting. I also found her sense of humour quite hilarious!
Nice and funny teacher but her notes are not clear and are confusing
Emma is a great lecturer. She is really good at teaching economics through non-economic things and is open to questions during lecture. She's pretty funny too. Hard to access outside of lecture though.
Professor Hutchinson has been a gem to have this semester. Although her slides can be confusing at times, she relates what would otherwise be difficult material to real-life scenarios, thus making it easier to understand. She is funny, and each lecture is something new and cool every day. I would recommend taking this class with her.
Emma is a great prof who really enjoys teaching economics. She gives a bunch of practice questions before exams and if you do them you should get a good mark. Also very helpful in office hours
She gives great lectures - she's funny and makes learning econ fun. But you need to stay on top of the lab/course materials to do well in this class. The help center is a great resource but she may not be available all the time.
Emma is a gem. As much as you really don't need to go to Econ lectures to do well in the class, I did because she is such a good lecturer. She provides lots of tangible examples to explain topics, and her mid-terms are super easy if you do the practice questions provided. If you are about going to take Econ 103, make sure it is with her!
Emma is very opinionated, but as long as you go to class with a sense of humour she is a good choice. She can be a little disorganized, but it doesn't effect the experience seriously. If you make the effort and go to her office hours to ask questions she is very helpful and genuinely cares.
Her class was funny. The tests were fair and she posts example questions which are very helpful to the midterm! Her slides can be a little confusing sometimes but overall it's good. Would recommend her Econ 103!
Emma does an amazing job at teaching Econ 103, if you want to get a good grade you will need to attend every lecture. Majority of your mark is based on 2 midterms and a final, but practice questions are posted that are very similar to the ones if not the same as those on the exam. Show up to every lecture, bring your iclicker and you will do well.
If you attend her lectures and take notes, you will most likely succeed in her course... Her practice quizes are a life saver!!
Emma was a great prof. She used real life examples to make challenging concepts as simple as she could. She posts practice questions for the midterms and final and some of them are the exact same on the midterm and final. Go to her office hours throughout the year to get extra help. I only used the textbook for the online access code of practice qs
Decent prof, But lazy. It's been like a week and a half since our marks were supposed to be in, yet she has not posted the marks, and has provided no explanation for it. It's literally just a scantron! The course was pretty easy, very crammable. Don't bother buying the textbook or even the mindtap. Never used them once and still got an easy A
lectures consisted of analogies taken to the point of pure confusion. she does a really great job of making easy things difficult. i found myself truly staggered by how easy the content was, relative to how easy she made it.
Emma is a great prof, she makes the content relatable and interesting. Lectures are helpful, but I would recommend doing the mindtap to reinforce the content.
Easy enough class but Emma is quite boring by the end of the term. Useless lectures but there is participation points for showing up.
Easy enough class but Emma is quite boring by the end of the term. Useless lectures but there is participation points for showing up. Do the questions and you'll do well.
Enjoyed the class, pretty easy to get and A if you study
I found the first 2/3 of the course super interesting (and relatively easy). Watch out for all the material you learn after the 2nd midterm! i made the mistake of not paying too much attention in class, & the material on the final is 50% made up of what you learn in the last few weeks. Emma is funny, but has her good days and boring days in lecture
She talks fast, but very organized. I was quite lost first time, but after reading text, online quizzes, help center(really useful!), I got A+ no problem. You have to spend time in order to get a good grade, but not difficult or hard at all.
Emma has by far been my favourite prof on campus thus far! She is hilarious, and stands her ground. LIVE FOR HER SLIDES AND PRACTICE EXAMS SO HELPFUL!! She does a great job of keeping lectures interesting, and will occasionally end early if she feels that its doable.
It is rather hard to get a hold of Emma and get information about the course and review sessions, as she doesn't allow you to email her, and Nick (who's assigned to answer emails) often doesnt respond or doesnt answer your question. She also takes forever to post grades. Never expect something to be returned when she says it will be.
Emma is a mediocre professor. She uses analogies which complicate what would otherwise be simple concepts. Her slides are disorganized and illiterate. She doesn't use coursespaces, rarely updates her own website, takes forever to grade a scantron test, doesn't answer emails, and doesn't email with info such as review sessions. Don't waste your time
Emma is a great prof! Had her for my first year at University, and she was an amazing orator. Would make funny jokes to get us all into a fun but serious lecture mood, tests were greats considering she gave you sample papers that replicated the actual tests. Participation matters in the form of iClickers, so don't miss class!
okay, so I know emma would be reading this thats why I am writing this. You are a great prof. and the way you teach it's really good. But you need to know your beer example is confusing. you need to change it. I am writing tgis while sitting in your class
Free online textbook for 103, she's a dope teacher, needs Iclicker though
Professor Hutchinson is incapable of teaching an Economics class. Her slides constantly have typos, she's frequently late and take's over 2 weeks to get back a 40 question Scantron test, lazy! Unconcerned about her students and tends to overcomplicate rather easy material. The easiest method to succeed is by teaching yourself the material.
Great Prof. Just read her slides, and go over key concepts. Free Textbook!
Personally found this course to be challenging, but in part due to the actual material too. That being said, she isn't that great of a teacher. Examples/slides can be poorly explained and there's little luck getting help from her. Definitely utilise your TAs!! (Seriously. Ben is the only reason I passed) But if you have a choice try another prof
Whoever says Emma is a bad prof is incapable of studying and learning the stuff themselves. Shes so dope, relatable and makes lectures interesting. Its not an "easy" class but by no means is it super difficult. Super worth it.
The one thing that annoyed me about Emma is that she would confuse things during lectures sometimes. She would catch herself but that would sometimes make the material itself confusing. The textbook she uses is a free online textbook with questions from past exams so it's great for studying. I found my lab pretty useless but you get marks for going
We do not have homework in this class. However, you have to attend every class and lab to answer the i-clicker questions in order to get the credits. And all the tests are multiple-choice questions.
Overall a lazy and unorganized prof. Definitely would not recommend enrolling into Econ 103 if its not required.
Honestly Emma made me hate econ. She is VERY unorganized and does not to seem to care about her job at all. If this class is not a required course, I would highly not recommend. Unfortunately, she is the only micro econ prof at Uvic :/
Emma was ok, but hard to reach outside of class and super unorganized slides. Lab coordinator who is responsible for emailing you back is passive aggressive, rude and inconsiderate does the bare minimum to help you succeed.
Not a very good lecturer, very confusing only talks about beer and food. Wish she could be more clear, might as well teach myself as her lecture does nothing.
Pretty good, enthusiastic. Sometimes funny. Classic 1st year course. Can't go wrong.
Emma's class was great. I switched my major to economics because of her. You have to attend the labs (the have iclicker questions that are worth marks). She is very relatable and makes an effort to make a dry subject fun and engaging. Would definitely take again!
Emma is a flustered disaster of a prof. Unfortunately ECON103 is a required course for the BCOM program. If you don't have to take this course, don't.
shes cool- but not a cool prof.. like shes funny but can't explain her thoughts.. so no
Emma is the most disorganized teacher I have ever had... on everything she wrote that she gave to us including both midterms, our final, her textbook, and every practice exam, she made multiple mistakes. She also spends most of her class off topic and rambling about trump. Uvic should look into getting a different micro teacher.
Class material is alright and at times interesting. The only problem is that Emma only talks about how rich she is and how much she dislikes president Trump. Lectures are useless unless you want extra marks from the iclickers which get tricky at times.
Everyone finds this class very different. I got an A+ in the course but I worked very hard for it. If you read the textbook and do all the practice questions you will be fine. 20% of your mark is iclickers so use that to your advantage. Emma is not a bad prof but her textbook that she wrote is very helpful. There are mistakes on tests usually.
Emma cares a lot about her students and does a good job at helping students get the best grades they can. She is funny, passionate and relatable. She does talk about beer too much and takes forever to get scantrons back. But overall, she made the material interesting and provided enough resources to help anyone willing to put in the work do well.
A pretty good prof. The material can be quite dry so it's sometimes hard to pay attention in lecture. If you keep up with the material and read the textbook you will find it easy to follow along.
Emma is a really great prof as she understands that a lot of the first years have no idea what university is like and ables them to do well. She makes the exams fair and the extra help hours that she sets up are great. My favorite prof so far and I really do not understand why people think her course is hard, she could make it harder if she wanted.
Emma is always willing to help and explain concepts. Sometimes she overcomplicates material in lecture. The textbook is extremely helpful!
A pretty good prof. Her textbook for the course is very helpful and contains many practise questions taken directly from past exams. Was failing the class the whole term until the final exam (worth 60%). Going to class is pretty much useless because you need to learn everything on your own.
Emma is great
She explains the concepts very detailed, too detailed that most of the time she confuses me. I found it hard to understand her in class, but I can make sense of it when I learn on my own. She makes everything too complicated and that is totally unnecessary. Took this class in Grade 12, my teacher was way more well-explained than her.
I can maybe see why people don't like Emma, but i think she's really great. She's funny (sometimes her jokes don't land but she tries), very helpful, and she wrote a textbook so you dont have to buy one!! By biggest tip: go to all your lectures and labs because Clicker Questions are free marks!
Emma is not the best lecturer as she tends to overcomplicate things confusing her students. However, her online textbook is super helpful and clear with the concepts. If you do the questions in it as well as the practice midterms and exams beforehand it is actually quite easy. Lots of resources outside of class as well which is also really nice.
Emma is super entertaining in lectures, but can sometimes make simple topics seem complicated by over-explaining them. But if you read the textbook it clears things up and is super easy to follow. Also, do the extra practice questions she posts before the midterms and final, if you're confident about them you're guaranteed a good grade.
Everything is based on 2 midterms and a final, there is hardly any showing of understanding as its all wordy multiple choice. I couldnt enjoy Emmas lectures since she went off topic A LOT. I studied religiously for the exams and still did poorly. Considering its a mandatory class for business they should have a better instructor.
I had Emma for 103 and, like everybody, thought she was a bit of a joke. I could not have been more wrong, she absolutely loves this subject and it shows in her lectures, which are fantastic. Graded by three midterms, all of them very similar to her practice tests. Everyone should take this course, it was the highlight of my semester.
Emma is a great prof that is funny and gives relatable examples. Her lecture slides are hard to follow but her textbook is amazing and teaches you everything you have to know for the exam. She made a really boring subject not that bad
Dr. Hutchinson is one of the best professors I've ever had, her lectures were fascinating and it was clear that she cared deeply about the material. Attendance was wildly low (<20% of people showed up) so every lecture turned into a great conversation between the prof and the few students who cared. If you go to class and pay attention, easy A+.
Econ 103 should be the most basic knowledge, the purpose is to lay the groundwork for future courses. But she makes everything so hard to understand! It's really complicated!! A lot of times it just disturbs my mind...
She is practically useless as a professor. Her lectures are garbage and you end up teaching the whole class to yourself. Her accent is so hard to understand that you won't even know the correct terminology for half the stuff. Terrible at explaining extremely basic concepts and makes everything harder for absolutely no reason.
Such a humble, caring prof. She explains things in depth to give context, and although it can be confusing, she's very good at explaining super complex topics. Being online has been disorganized, but she's always correcting herself and adjusting the curriculum after feedback. I'm not good at economics, but that's not her fault. She's a good prof.
Doesn't respond to email, posts mediocre at best lectures in brightspace and frequently makes mistakes on questions and answers
She over complicates things like crazy and always has typos on lectures, practice questions, quizzes, and midterms too. Everytime I get a test back I just wait until my mark changes b/c there's always a mistake in the key. If you take her class online make sure to read the textbook - it'll help more than her lectures
I found that the way Emma taught this course made it even more difficult for me to understand the concepts. Very disorganized and constant emails about changes or mistakes. However, was the first semester of econ103 online so I do have sympathy for her while she moved everything online. She is very helpful when you do need help, just very busy.
While she is a very nice person who has helped in office hours, her online slide, lectures and curriculum is terrible. It feels like you've gone into an alternate universe with alternate material that doesn't match up with anything else on the internet, which makes the use of secondary teaching impossible b/c nothing lines up.
Learned the whole course on Khan academy because I couldn't learn a damn thing from her lectures. Way to complicated and way way way to many spelling mistakes and typos. How in the world do you make a typo in a midterm??
No point in watching her lectures, had her for econ103 and she teaches you the material but provides no example questions whatsoever and basically expects you to learn everything on your own. Basically your TAs will teach you the material because you'll need to go to office hours a lot. Highly reccommend if you get her as a prof to switch out asap!
So basically her lectures are terrible, they teach you nothing and then she gives you quizzes that are nothing like her lectures, therefore be prepared to learn this entire class on your own. I highly recommend if your doing an Econ major and you're trying to learn Econ, switch out of this class as she teaches you NOTHING. Very nice person though.
Shes friendly and quizzes and midterms were reasonable. She does make lots of typos in her powerpoint slides and there are lots of emails with corrections which can get a bit confusing. I didn't find the course too difficult because I found econ12 covered much of the curriculum, but I could see it being quite difficult with no prior knowledge.
Didn't learn a thing from the lecture's or the slides, needed to use online sources to teach me almost everything. She overcomplicated things that were not hard, and her quizzes and tests had many things on them that seemed insignificant when she attempted to teach us. Having the entire class be pre-recorded lectures was awful as well.
her lectures are horrible I didn't learn a thing from them, I needed to get a tutor to teach me everything in the class, she overcomplicates everything, and her tests have so many things that she doesn't talk about in the lectures. if you don't have to take this class I would not recommend it to anyone.
The most confusing and terrible class I've ever taken. She makes constant errors, writes in her own secret language, and is a terrible econ teacher. I was so lost watching her explanations, but it made sense watching youtube. avoid if possible.
There were constant typos in lectures and tests and she overcomplicated a lot of simple concepts. Like everyone else, Khan Academy and the textbook helped me more than her lectures. I have a feeling she is better with in person class as you could tell she was stressed with online. During her office hours she explained things better.
Horrible. I never wrote a rate my professor post but I have to deter people from taking this course, especially online. Her lectures are all prerecorded and are tough to understand. Makes many mistakes and typos in her slides and quizzes, showing no regard for students who are trying their best to understand the course. Avoid this prof at all costs
This course has clearly been negatively impacted because of the online format. All of the lectures being online detracts from the learning experience, however, after taking online classes in high school this was comparable. If you understand and practice the textbook questions you should do good, but don't expect to know the course off lectures.
Mostly, class is stupid easy. Anyone with half a brain could get an easy A. The asynchronous delivery wasn't ideal and neither were other aspects of the course such as labs and testing, but hey, COVID. Emma seems really nice and funny in person. Would definitely take again. Lots of office hours and extra help sessions offered so no excuse.
Emma is a kind, empathetic prof, who clearly wants her students to succeed. Adjusting to 600 students in an online format must have been a stretch. Her feedback quality was diminished by students that failed to read basic instructions. Easy A, and she made lack lustre content engaging.
Often attended help sessions and office hours. Take quizes and lectures with a grain of salt. Don't overanalyze it; just get the big picture. you will get confused af if you do.... Often there are typos and erros ; don't waste time. The course is designed for you to learn off labs and office hours so make sure you spend lots of time there.
Terrible teacher, so many typos, errors in quizzes and tests which will not be corrected and you will wonder why it is wrong. Do not take unless you have to. I cannot stress how bad this class was and she is an awful teacher. The only thing positive is that she is passionate about the subject.
Super nice prof, I would take her class again if I could. She ran the course asynchronously but she had lots of office hours and seemed to care about her students. You have to study hard for the midterms and final but they were very fair!
She wasn't the best prof, but I'll give credit where credit is due, she had no one helping her basically the entire semester and was doing a good job for what she had. She gives good lectures and her Textbook makes the material super easy to understand. This course also depends on who your TA's are as they really help you understand the material.
Worst class I've ever taken. Emma does not care about her students understanding the material, and will only do the bare minimum. Do NOT take unless you have to. The material was challenging to understand and her practice questions and test questions didn't even relate back to what she wrote in the lectures (lots of typos too). SO much stress
I quite enjoyed this class and Emma's teaching. Her expectations and course structure were very clear and easy to follow. Short quizzes on lectures to keep you engaged, a couple of midterms and a final. Free textbook. If you understand the practice questions in bright space and textbook the course is dead easy. The highest grade I've received.
Emma seems like a very nice person but there were so many typos in slides, pre-lecture recordings, practice questions, etc. It made it pretty distracting and difficult to understand some of the material.
Here's the thing, I think Emma is a passionate and intelligent woman and professor, does that mean I would ever wanna take the class again? No. Her constant spelling errors and heavy pre-recorded lectures make for a bad mix. The material isn't necessarily hard but she drags on a bit- had to watch khan academy just to grasp not so difficult concepts
Emma is good at breaking down difficult concepts, particularly for those who don't neccesarily enjoy econ. The tests are a noticeable step up in difficulty from the quizzes. I also enjoyed her lectures, she makes them interesting. Only thing I didn't enjoy were mistakes on quizzes/tests. Seems nitpicky but makes the course more difficult.
Emma is an empathetic teacher that will allow extensions when necessary and has helpful office hours
Very good teacher, I always enjoy coming to her lectures and she makes them worth attending. Very entertaining and informative.
Emma gets a lot of negative feedback both on here and amongst my fellow classmates, but as a second year in a first year Econ course, she is about as good as one could hope for. Yea, she's got the online lectures that can be a pain, but she is more than willing to help you understand material. Sure there's grammatical errors, but cmon, we're human.
The amount of errors, typos, badly worded questions and quizzes that don't match with lecture content make this class insufferable at times. The quizzes "expand" on the lecture, which means that if you don't understand a quiz question you're screwed. Also why is the class half online.
to put it in economic terms: Emmas MB for teaching decreases as time elapsed in the course increases. the whole class was just poorly executed. Having to watch mandatory online lectures outside of class and then showing up to the in person ones just to hear about how Emma has "too much on her plate" and thats why theres 28 errors on every quiz
Going to lectures was a waste of my time, she pretty much goes over the quizzes which are due every other day. She always claimed to busy, doesnt really seemed like she cared at all about teaching. The material isnt very hard.
Emma is a super fair and I don't think she is recognized enough for it. The course material was not hard but did require a lot of attention but, she offers a crazy good amount of optional practice questions that make it super easy to properly prepare for exams. Also, she prepares pre recorded online lectures that are super short and easy to watch!
emma is awesome, she obviously loves what she does and makes it hard for other not to love it too. she is very disorganized though, so be ready for multiple emails a day from her regarding her mistakes or progress on something like grading a test. even so, I had a blast in the class and she makes me want to learn
hella quizes, dont need to go to class, easy material, common sense, she might be off a few too many beers tho
I know she is not everyone's favourite, but I absolutely loved Emma. She clearly knows her material well, and will take the time in class to explain concepts if you ask. She is prone to mistakes, but skews corrections in favour of students. Advice: Watch the videos, and make sure you get the material and you will be totally fine.
She's such a kind person but my gosh is she unorganized. Constant typos (even on exams and midterms) and her in person lectures were not informative in the slightest. The online posted lectures were too long, incredibly content heavy and hard to understand in the later units. Amazing officer hours though, and the TA's were a lot of help.,
Emma, I miss you. Your beer and pizza examples were exquisite. I am in econ 104 as of right and it is horrendous with my professor. If i could take 104 with you, i would lay down my life for that opportunity. I would endure your perfect examples with beer and pizza. very simple and easy to understand. I miss you
Really good prof. Made Econ 103 a breeze. Lots of pre-work, but it makes the material super straightforward. Great way to start Econ! However, you will be mildly concerned by her constant use of beer and pizza examples.
I'm going to be honest: this class is not for everyone. Emma gives lots of online lectures, the in-person lectures are useless, and the exams are not easy. Emma is also incredibly disorganized, so always make sure you count your scores twice. All that being said, she is extremely fair and will make sure the course is fair.
Really enjoyed class with Emma! But so many prerecorded online lectures were content heavy. Free textbook was great. Not super hard but time consuming. I didn't find lectures as important as the prerecorded videos, labs, textbook/other practice material. Emma is more than happy to help if you have a question. Typos, but always graded in your favor.
Emma Hutchinson was overall a very caring prof. She really admires the students who work hard and attend lectures. The constant mistakes she makes can be contradictory to what is taught and the work load can be difficult without spending a lot of time into it. Study Hard.
Emma is great at explaining concepts. Her tests are straightforward forward and it was honestly a great class for a GPA booster. Take it if you can.
Dr. Hutchinson clearly explains concepts... if you do the homework and quizzes you will get a good grade. I appreciated that she posted all her recordings of lectures (a task that a surprising amount profs seem to be challenged by).
Emma was great! The way this course is formatted makes it easy to actually understand the concepts, if you watch the pre-recorded lectures and show up to the actual lectures you'll do well!
I did not love her style of teaching. She makes mistakes frequently in her lecture slides and always comes up with an excuse "it was 4am" instead of finding ways to stop messing up. However, she's very direct. Her in-person lectures are only for answering practice questions not teaching new material. It's easy to fall behind in her class.
Emma taught you all the material via pre-recorded online lectures, and class-time was very often used to ask questions. Unless you were grossly behind or for some reason couldn't get the material, you do not need to go to class. People saying its easy to fall behind are just lazy. About 3 hours of work, and you don't even need to go to class.
I had very hard time understanding the lectures and had to outsource to other lecturers
This class was one of my favourite during my semester, and Emma was easily my favourite prof. The content is mostly online, and she uses lectures to address harder topics in depth and go over questions, which I found very helpful. The workload outside of class was really light, and her lectures are funny. And she really wants you to do well!
She clearly cares about what she teaches. The class was chill, my favourite prof of the semester.
1. Many errors and many emails about those errors. 2. Slides for topics are confusing - started to look like hieroglyphics. 3. Lots of prep time outside of class - workload heavy. 4. Graphs can be a headache to look at - not well-labeled or organized. 5. She's nice at least. 6. Graph, formula and terminology heavy course. Textbook is free.
Emma is a hilarious individual who always makes sure to tell you about her excellent connections with cigarettes and alcohol. She is a joy to be around, and her accent makes it all the better. The only downside is she is probably one of the more disorganized professors, and you will notice plenty of mistakes in lectures and the book. Be weary!
Emma makes a lot of contradictions in the course. She told the class that the exam would be cumulative and involve a bit off all the topics, but the exam was mostly on the last two units which were extremely rushed and taught poorly. I went to office hours and studied the practice problems as suggested, and I still have high doubts for this exam.
Class is online format with in person lectures for question answering. The online lectures are from COVID, filled with spelling mistakes/errors and are super long, dry and boring. Later units are taught poorly. She is very disorganized and her excuses are always "it was 4am" or "my main focus isn't teaching". If you hate online classes avoid her.
Must watch pre-recorded lectures and class is for answering questions and going through tough ones. No need to go to class just watch the recordings after
Emma was a great professor, she's super funny which made the lectures bearable. Econ 103 is relatively easy class though I will say it involved a lot of studying. Huge class, and I never went to any office hours so I never had any interactions with her, seemed caring and willing to help. Lots of open book practice quizzes but a free 25% by doing em
I mean enough to be said here, it's a reverse class. So going to class is merely just a study session. Professors lacks in teaching in class in my opinion it is what got my grade lowered. Everything I did was self taught. online lectures did not match the textbook. Very confusing. Seemed as though professor lacked in passion. need group sesh.
She was a great professor and was deeply knowledgeable and passionate about her course. However, she was quite disorganized and made some organizational mistakes, but none of it got in the way of learning the material.
Her lecture slides, quizzes and textbook were full of typos. She sent out tons of emails correcting typos on quizzes and telling us to double check our exam scores for errors. He reasoning was that she had other commitments outside of the class. Didn't use lecture time to teach, only to review. Failed to show up to office hours on occasion.
Emma's course was easy to follow and if you stay on top of the pre-lecture work and did the weekly quizzes, you will most likely succeed. She has a very to the point, efficient, and effective teaching style which seems to work with many students and overall I would happily take another course with her again. She uses discord for help with quizzes.
Honestly, she's not a bad prof, but she doesn't feel university-grade. Her lecture slides (especially on later topics) are horrendously wordy and unclear and riddled with typos. You don't have to go to lecture, she's mildly helpful if you go. She needs to gather herself and find methods to make her course (and life) run smoother. screwed up grades.
To succeed in this course you will need good time managing because 99% of this course is online. Quizzes are free marks pretty much but she will not curve your mark for anything.
One of One,you can't find a prof that cares about students' grades much more than she does. Lectures are awesome and believe me you don't want to miss them. Study the way she tells, you completely understand it. She uses her own textbook, free but has lots of typos, even in the midterm. She is Australian, has an accent, and swears while teaching lol.
The flak Emma receives for errors in her lectures is warranted, however, besides that Emma is a caring and generous professor. Any errors that would have affected grades were always given in the student's favor, and she is an engaging and entertaining speaker. If you show up and pay attention the material really isn't that difficult.
Good professor and style of learning is easy to understand.
Emma is a very decent prof! Everything that is taught is tested fairly, and if you need help, she is always there. The only big complaint I have is that she does not teach in class, but rather refers that you watch the videos of the lectures in bright space. In class, she just goes over tricky examples and answers questions, rather than teaching.
overall horrible teacher does not go over lectures during lecture time, instead uses 2020 pandemic pre recorded lectures as her class. she doesn't care about teaching all that much.
Emma is very nice and will be there if you need help. However the problem with the class is that she uses prerecorded lectures that you must watch before class. She will use the actual lecture time to go over questions asked by students. Allows for a lot of procrastination. Tests are fair if you do the work
Emma's lectures are pretty entertaining, and her exams are very straightforward. However, her lectures are helpful only if you want to learn more about tricky questions since she makes you go through the basics in her prerecorded videos. Also, there were numerous mistakes in her quizzes and exams that I had to point out to her to get them fixed.
Lazy and unorganized
attendance wasn't mandatory, all lectures were posted on the brightspace where she explains the topic REALLY well, i was shocked to see how good someone could be at their job. if you're a procrastinator + this course isnt a requirement, maybe stay away because you will need to encourage yourself to succeed.
Uvic is a joke with such terrible professors. You are defenitely 'better off learning on Youtube' than to sit and waste your time in her class. University of Victoria is the worst of the worst.
She is just pretty lazy
GOAT, enough said.
Very lazy teacher. Lots of mistakes in content that can make learning very difficult. The class revolves around online recorded lectures that have terrible explanations for content that will leave you wondering where the hell she is pulling stuff out of that she is taking about. Would recommend avoiding.
What a gal
I do not recommend Emma if you procrastinate at all, the class is almost all online through lectures that are not super easy to comprehend. The in-person lectures all revolve around the questions from topics several classes ahead of where we are. Difficult class to stay motivated in.
She is hilarious and super easy to learn from - obviously very passionate about Economics. This course had a lot of online quizzes and homework and lots of video lectures to watch, but the constant exposure to course materials ended up being super helpful. Cheat sheets were allowed for all tests. Overall, amazing prof!!
she doesnt teach and expecta you to learn everything on your own. Also makes hella mistakes on practice questions and such.
Terrible prof. Said on the first day she hated Bcom students to a class of 90% bcom students. Lectures are basically pointless and most of content is given through pre recorded lectures that are hard to follow so you basically have to teach yourself. Exams are excessively difficult and no extra credit is offered. Avoid if possible.
Decent prof. Course can be entirely self taught (can be a pro or con). I personally did not attend a SINGLE lecture or lab, and still finished the class with a 90%. Is a nice person and fine teacher.
The class can be self-taught with the provided resources, but attending lectures helps break down the material. Unstuckstudy AI and other study tools like ChatGPT can be useful for exam prep. Overall, a decent professor who's passionate about economics, but staying motivated is key.
Good entertaining teacher, loves beer and covers a lot of the material on Brightspace, lectures are mostly going over questions.
will take again
Worst prof for UVic Econ student. There are so many mistakes on her homework, practice questions, slides and on THE FINAL! She wasn't even there for the final and there was a sheet with all the mistakes she had made.
It took Emma two months just to have the course schedule completed which made it very difficult to manage her class. Her lectures, study material and practice questions were full of typos to the extent they were unreliable. I would recommend you to avoid this prof as I heard she has similar issues across all courses she teaches.
Her sense of humor and engaging stories make the material enjoyable. She's clearly an expert in her field. While there were a few typos they didn't interfere with learning. After all, we're all human, and mistakes happen! This course is challenging, so be prepared to work. When Emma emphasizes concepts or gives advice on exam prep, take it serious
Many mistakes in study material and lecture notes make already tricky material that much more confusing and difficult.
She is the best! Very entertaining lectures, she's hilarious. She posts her slides that are very detailed and have all the information you need to learn.
Emma is so fun. Lectures are very enjoyable and definitely necessary for the course. She very clearly wants all her students to succeed. Her review sessions before exams are also really helpful. Can't wait for next term when I get to take Intermediate Micro II with her. I struggled a lot with year 1 micro, but after this class I am a lot better!
Emma started off as a good professor, but seemed to fall apart as the semester went on. The final exam was a joke, there was 11 question and she had to make corrections on 7 of them because of typos or mistakes in the question. Would not recommend taking this prof unless you already know the content well
