His tests were pretty fair and he did a good job telling us exactly what would be covered on the exams.
He really cares about you learning. He's got some quirky things about him, but overall, he's very fair.
This guy was SUPER nice and very helpful.
His test is pretty much based on the book problems, yet challenging! He likes to mix severals chapters into 1 problem. I like his online outline, very details and helpful to study. Memorize as much as u can, then u can make connection from 1 chpt to the next!
I totally have favorites and my favorite chem Prof so far was Dr. Bob! Theodorakis was no Dr. Bob; he didn't have such a charming sense of humor and expressed a lot less care in his students' learning. But if all you want is a D in the class, he's the Prof to take!
overall good prof...harder than expected though, but tests were fair. class requires a lot of study time...helpful in office hours, can be funny in lecture.
His tests were difficult, but definitely not impossible. Really good professor, outlines helped ALOT!
Straight forward exams and interesting lecture. O Chem is just very difficult, but he is great to take it with.
Dr. Theodorakis is the shizzzznit! This guy is a chemistry wizard and he explains it super well. Final is short and tough but I still got an A in the class. I recommend Dr. Theo big time above Dr. Bob, who I took for 140A!
His test are super hard...so theres a huge curve but still if u dont no your**** WELL...your gonna bomb his test...and i got an A so i no what im talking about
He posts his chapter outlines online which are very helpful for studying. Its a tough class but if you work at it you can get an A. Exams are challenging but very doable if you studied and know what you're doing.
Very fun prof! Can explain mechanisms very well. Very helpful outlines. Don't need to read book. TAKE HIM!
great guy... gives handouts that he covers exactly what he teaches, w/ no bs... funny and keeps your attention during lecture... definately take this guy.
very nice guy, doesnt expect you to know too much useless stuff, and the material is pretty hard. You have to go to office hours a lot (TA's office hours help), and lots and lots and lots of stuff to memorize in that class.
not very effective, but very easy!
His handouts were helpful but the class is challenging. Dont ever buy the molecular model they are like $50 instead I bought an ochemplate which is a fraction of a price at www.ochemplate.com. Very useful tool.
great class, great prof. Just might have to study a bit more for MCATs since it he made it really easy!
uses old school overhead projector for lectures; impossible to read unless you sit in the front rows. actually told us that the rest of a chapter was not that difficult when he ran out of time to lecture before the midterm, and told us to just read it and figure it out ourselves. take perrin instead if he teaches 140 B, hes a better teacher.
Material is overwhelming. Need to know a lot of mechanisms for the final. His notes make it seem easy.. but the tests...epecially the final is very hard.
He is Greek-tastic! He wears clothes that are a little too tight, but he learned me o-chem pretty good. The midterms and final were fair. What made this class was the T.A. Bryan, who was, for lack of a better word, amazing. I'd probably recommend Dr. Theodoropolis.
Dr. Greek was probably my favorite ochem prof. His exams are hard and really focus on details- but he curves it fairly to help give everyone the grade they want. definatley get brian phan as a TA if you can, he gives you problems you wouldnt expect so i was almost overprepared. hats off to the greek stallion!
His notes are good for studying. He frivolously assigns hw. Know your reactions. Tests are fair, but difficult.
Good professor. Explained material very well. The problems we did in class were extremely easy compared to some of the exam questions, but if you and understand the problems from the book, you will be good to go. He is a fair professor. I would definitely take him again.
He's very organized. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS! He tells you EXACTLY what's going to be on the midterm. His office hours are very helpful also, don't be afraid to ask him what's on the test ;) He does have an accent but it's very comprehensible. His final was ridiculously easy and was pretty much all recycled questions from previous midterms
He was a pretty funny professor during class, maybe a little too much. His accent was ok but it was hard to understand especially if your trying to learn all those reactions that we had to learn. His tests were pretty difficult so i would try to avoid if possible. I would take hoeger or ternansky if possible
wow.. I LOVEEE this guy!! all you have to do is go to him and ask if "this reaction" is going to be on the test or if "that reaction" is going to be on the test..he will just tell you "yes yes yes" or "no no no".It seems kind of wrong at first..kind of like you're cheating..but he's SOO funny and cool about it..he'll just tell you what to study for
I didn't take his class, but my roommate was taking it at the same time than me and I was using her notes to understand my class! He is along with O'Connor, the best OChem Professor. I ended up skipping mine and going to his instead.
omg final open notes. completely useless n super hard. dont understand his accent. teaches from transparency and moves projector screen to write on board then moves screen over the writing. didnt go to class. First half taught by O'Connor - much better. Got an A- only cause evry1 probably failed final. cake for grads. hell for udergrads.
He must've been a joke last year if he gave you what's gonna be on the exams. That certainly wasn't the case this year. He's an enjoyable lecturer but his exam questions don't really correlate with book problems so it wasn't very useful doing the homework for M1/M2
Highly over-rated. Lectures, somewhat entertaining but material presented is nowhere near what is actually tested. Not even doing all of his homework problems would help you on his exams. Office hours are useless, goes on random tangents and starts writing emails while you attempt to ask him a question and end up waiting 5 minutes so he can finish.
Agreed, funny guy but lectures consist of the basic mechanism of rxns and moving on. No further examples. Then when you get to the test-even after solving all the book problems-you'll sit there and ask yourself WHERE did he get this from. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way. After having an awesome 140a class I feel behind now in C..
Everyone stop crying. Dr. T is an awesome teacher. Yes the fake email was funny, what do you expect him to do babysit all of you and tell you it's gonna be okay? Get over it. as far as him as a teacher, T is awesome. And he's hilarious once you get to know him. I'd recommend him over any O chem prof at UCSD.
I got an A in Perrin, one of the "harder" 140A professors and I thought he was a much better professor than this guy. Theodorakis just didn't have the right teaching style to match his exams. The average wasn't that low because the average student in the class pretty much regurgitated any reagents they could remember from class and get partial.
Good professor.Always has time for students. Test aren't easy but they are doable. His notes are very helpful and his curve is generous.Problems are usually worth a lot of points, if you do a couple you are bound to pass
Good professor, he reviews his topics multiple times in class for clarity and his midterms/finals are representative of the materials in both his set of notes and his old practice midterms. I did really bad in 140A but improved in his class.Focus mainly on the notes he provides because it is really helpful! I did not even use the book at all!
Fair professor for an overall difficult class (140B). Study his notes and master the old exams and you'll do fine. Tends to skip over some material, but less stuff on exams is fine by me. Here's hoping it doesn't come back to haunt me in 140C. Also, go to TA Ed's section if you can; best chem TA I've ever had at UCSD by far.
Great lecturer with a sense of humor; explains material and chemical mechanisms very well using a combination of chalk and powerpoint overview. Tends to use the chalkboards on the right, so sit on the right... Exams generously curved; holds review sessions prior to exams. Overal great and entertaining professor!
This guy is hilarious and he definitely shows concern for the students' learning. Will answer questions no matter how dumb they are to the class. His teaching style was very clear to me at least. The TA (Ed) never showed up to section (whenever I went) though.
Very helpful professor, really loves students. Explained reactions many times so that even if you are lost in a mechanism you can use some common sense to decipher it. However, there is no partial credit on exams which becomes a little unfair when u may only remember part of a mechanism. Overall, great professor and would take him again.
very helpful professor. He is smart and funny. Made ochem very easy and all of his examples are clear and easy to follow. Best ochem professor eveeerr! :) i recommend him!
A very clear, very informative lecturer. He does have a strong greek accent but it does not get in the way of his explanations. Beware though: his midterms are tough, lots of mechanisms and retro synthesis. Overall he has great sense of humor and is very helpful when you ask him questions.
2 midterms, 1 final. First midterm emphasized on H and C NMR. Second exam and final are all on mechs. Gives 2 practice exam for every exam and are good representations with good ans keys. No big surprises on the tests and does not test on random things like what whitecell does. Exams are hard-I believe.
Best professor I've had so far at UCSD, and the only one to keep me up during an 8 am. Makes everything in ochem super clear, something the book tends to overcomplicate. His tests may be more complicated than book problems, but it is all very logical and follows usual mechanisms. Just make sure you don't fall behind. If you want to learn, take him.
This is a very difficult class. Dr. T is an excellent professor and makes ochem easy to follow. I did bad in 140A but really improved in this class because Dr. T doesn't test on random stuff. Instead, the first test is mostly (75% of it) C and H NMR. Second midterm and final are mostly mechanism and multi-step synthesis. Study practice exams!
He makes ochem very understandable. Clear and funny lectures, but board problems he did were very general. I wished that he would do more examples on the board, but knowing the general cases is very important too. Otherwise, his tests are similar to his practice exams. Midterm 1 was NMR. Midterm 2 was reactions and 1 mechanism. Final- mechanisms!
Dr. T is a brilliant man. His knowledge of his field and 140B in particular is beyond measure. His truly understands the material on a level that can answer any question students throw at him. The spacing between midterms was weird (one was week 3, the other week 9!) but was doable. Final was super difficult but he gave us freebies towards the end.
Dr.T is by far the best organic chem professor I've had. The only downside to his class is the exams are quite difficult but you don't need very many points to simply pass. Getting a B requires some effort (doing hw) but getting an A depends on natural talent since certain problems require you to think but time is limited. His lectures are clear
My advice to you is stay on top of the homework and go to the review sessions. He tells you what not to study in the review sessions so you don't waste a lot of time. Overall he was pretty fair since he didn't make us learn overly complicated mechanisms, but his tests are tough because you have to combine multiple concepts into one mech. problem.
Theodorakis is a hilarious and well respected professor. He makes Ochem fun and enjoyable! First midterm (super easy) is in week 2/3 to weed out the D's and under students. Second midterm (extremely hard) is in week 7/8 to differentiate between the A and B students. Final is HARD.
Maybe it's just me, but I had no trouble understanding what Professor T was saying. The mechanisms in his notes aren't very difficult, but doing the representative exams and homework will help. First midterm was easy (to send a signal to weak students), 2nd midterm more difficult (separates A students and B students) and the final is the final.
Ochem is not an easy subject in general but he tried to boil down explanations to the best of his ability! He's super funny and I think one of the best ochem profs at UCSD. He doesn't make you learn all the mechanisms but beware of synthesis problems because that'll be the most difficult part (Primarily what you see in 2nd midterm and final)
Theodorakis is such a great professor! He really cares about his students and their success in his class. Is readily available to help outside of class and does a great job presenting material in a way that is easily understood by students. He is in no way arrogant or intimidating like other chem staff here.
Overall, Dr. E is awesome. His lectures are always a blast to attend. He discusses what is to be expected from you to help you prepare for the exams. His exams are very representative of his practice exams and content he tells you in class, so no surprises! He's such an approachable and chill professor! Office hours are welcoming and helpful!!!
He is super funny, and really cares about his students. His lectures are actually worth attending even though it was 8am as the way he teaches the class grabs student's attention. I strongly recommend it although his tests were harder than you expect.
He is super funny and approachable. However his tests are VERY HARD!!! Its mostly synthesis which he has never done examples of in class. He only does very simple mechanisms in class but tests you on a much higher level on the midterm. His exams are harder than the previous year midterm he gives you as a practice.
Truly horrible professor, his tests are nothing like what he teaches at lectures. I have a good understanding of topics, homework questions but still struggle to understand how he manages to create the hardest exams. His practice tests are also nothing like the actual tests. I don't know how he sleeps at night but he made my life a living hell.
He's a caring professor but his exams are super hard. The things he teaches in lecture are nothing like his exams. He really expects you to know your stuff just to pass the class. He doesn't use the whole class time for the midterms and for the final only gives 2 hours. I don't recommend taking this professor!!!
Explains very easy mechanisms in class but content on exams is extremely hard. Somewhat unorganized in teaching. He's a nice guy who cares about his students but I don't feel prepared at all for 40C
Funny guy and seems to care about his students but exams are very difficult and not representative of what is gone over in lecture. Easy mechanisms and reactions are shown in lecture but the level of difficulty on exams is ramped up much higher. His notes he provides are good for studying and provide a good general knowledge of the class.
I really didn't like him. He's just like every other hands off UCSD professor that makes your whole grade based on a couple heavily weighed, difficult exams.
A man who really knows his chemistry!
I really loved his class. The exams are open-note, but that doesn't mean don't study. The exams are LONG so definitely either know the reagents by heart or condensed cheat sheet readily available. He really appreciates when students participate, and it's a lot more fun when people shout out answers (whether they're right or not).
VERY HARD TESTS!!!!!!!!!!
Theodorakis is super understanding and his lectures are honestly pretty fun. He gave our class extra credit options even though it wasn't on the syllabus just because someone asked, which was pretty cool. His exams are definitely difficult, so you'll have to sink in quite a few hours to do well but there's a fat curve at the end of the class.
Professor Theodorakis is very nice and cares about his students. I had a very hard time in this class since grades are based on 2 midterms and the final. I found the lectures very confusing. Honestly the curve and the 400 problems for extra credit helped me pass. If ur good at ochem, take him but if not good luck.
The grade is composed of three tests: 2 midterms and 1 final. He gives good notes for us to study and prepare for tests. However, he is not quite accessible through email. Btw, I am not in the US due to the pandemic and have jet lag, so its inconvenient for me to go to his oh.
Very nice guy and really cares about your learning. Does review sessions on the weekend before exam which helped a lot, and the previous exams are really good for practicing! Know the concepts well, Bc exams are hard and his questions are unique. Take him if ur ready to work and learn a lot! I feel prepared for the ochem on mcat after his class
Great guy, but horrible at teaching. Its just easier to learn the material by watching The Organic Chemistry Tutor on youtube.
His slides sum everything up very nicely and his lectures give just enough details about what's going on for you to be able to understand. Completely rational and good at answering questions and making decisions on the spot. Gives everything to you straight and says you exactly what you need to do to pass with full honesty although tricky at times.
I enjoyed his teaching well enough, he's very lively and it makes the 8am class less tedious. However, I found the course very difficult and if you aren't a great test taker just know the three exams are basically the only things in the grade book. Do LOTS of practice problems and go to DI and you'll be okay.
Prof ET is a great guy. His lecture slides are a great resource to use to study. He basically sums up all of the important concepts and mechanisms for each of the chapters onto the slides which makes it very unnecessary for us to read through the textbook. BUT the tests are RLY HARD. And your grade lies in the 2 midterms and 1 final so GOOD LUCK
Professor ET is nice and all, but I swear this has been the hardest class I've taken. For the 140A I passed with an A, however I feel like no matter how much I study or how, there is no way this helps with taking the midterms. The class is primarily based on 2 midterms and 1 final with homework assignments. Too difficult.
Professor Theodorakis was the nicest professor that u have ever taken. He had amazing slides and explained things extremely well. He assigned graded for completion homework with enough examples to understand the material. That being said, because there is not graded homework and a bunch of busy work assignments your grade comes down to the tests.
ET is a pretty good prof. He has good slides to study from and is straight to the point about what he wants you to know. He provided past exams for us to look at and tells us some specific concepts that are gonna be on the exam too which was very helpful. HW graded by submission is part of the grade def helps it and he gave EC for failing students
Professor T was awesome. He will make you actually enjoy ochem, which is a really difficult thing to accomplish. Even though it was an 8 am lecture, he always showed up with tons of energy and went through the mechanisms with a lot of details. Attend discussion and SI sections if you want a good grade.
Ochem is definitely hard, but ET puts a lot of emphasis on strategies versus memorization. His ochem methodology is very intuitive, despite it being hard. All this class requires is a lot of effort, and ET helps you a lot through this.
Decent lecturer, great slides, but the exams do not look like the slides. He often cooks up his own problems so you're expected to apply the mechanisms. Theodorakis will help you but only if you ask. Funny guy who tried his darnedest to have a lucid class for an 8am lecture.
The best professor I have ever had. He is the only professor whose class I would willingly go to an 8am lecture and enjoy every single minute of it. He was so hilarious and had such a contagious energy that it was hard NOT to pay attention. But above all else, he is truly a great professor and I can tell he really wants us to learn the material.
Awesome lecturer, explained in great details about the material. ET is really ethusiastic about the material he taught, and managed to make the class humurous in 8am. Exams are much more easier than the other Ochem professors, you can do very well as long as you practice textbook problems. But the grading scale is extremely rigorous, average ~2.65.
I personally wasn't a fan of Theodorakis's class. His slides are very wordy and hard to digest at 8 am. 41B is the hardest of the series in my opinion, and having that early morning timeslot does not help. As a professor, he is pretty good and gives good explanations during lecture. His exams are fair, and are likely the easiest I've taken.
Theodorakis is a very funny and engaging lecturer. However, HE IS A HARSH AND UNFAIR GRADER. His midterms have barely any partial credit and putting an answer with a slight mistake will earn you the same points as leaving it blank. TIME CONSTRAINTS for midterm 1, and very low averages. BOASTS ABOUT "weeding out weak links"
Funny lectures but harsh 8AM & unclear explanation. Actual Exams are much harder than the practice one.
used to actually like chem until his class where he penalizes every small error, and grades so harshly. Made me consider changing my major so many times and the grading policies actually made me depressed. This class made me reconsider everything and finding motivation after it was difficult praying for my career and grade now
Good lecturer but very harsh grader. Heard that basically every regrade request to him results in a lower grade for exams which sucks in an exam heavy class. Also made a policy that anyone who finished the exam in half time got EC after too many people complained about time limit. Honestly very demoralizing while taking the exam and kinda hurtful.
He's a pretty good lecturer but his tests are harsh or maybe I'm just dumb. Final tore me apart and left me questioning everything. He is very caring and sweet though and encourages asking even the simplest of questions.
Professor shows clear bias toward certain students. Doesn't believe in fair grading policies with subjective rubric and exams don't cover the content covered in class
Professor made lectures very confusing by bringing up unnecessary topics. Tests were much more difficult compared to practices and gave us hundreds of homework problems that didn't cover the right topics. Also told students they didn't belong in his class during the final.
The final exam was very bad, nothing like the last winter practice final
There are a lot of low ratings (WI25) and I wanted to say he wasn't that bad. You just need to study. The things he says like "weeding out weak links" and people "not belonging" are said in obvious joking manners, but I can see how they rub students the wrong way. He genuinely does care about students and chemistry, but exams can be hard.
I was fighting tears during the final after he said we didn't deserve to be in his class if we couldn't do one of the questions. Okay lecturer, but I feel like he didn't prepare us for the exams since they were way harder than the practice ones. I went from loving 41A and scoring very well to failing this final... at least he curves heavily
Explain concepts and reactions well and provide very useful notes. Awesome lecturer
Very difficult class but he's a good professor and teaches well.
Very good prof. Tough course material but he made it as easy and entertaining as possible. Super energetic, esp. for an 8AM class. Really learned alot, lectures were very entertaining. Just prepare to put in the work and ride the curve and youll be chilling.
