emrul is wayyyy too nice and cares a lot about his students. Its his first term at UBC, and i hope he stays here!!! material isnt too challenging either. would highly recommend!!!
He is a dedicated and funny instructor. As long as you listen to his lectures carefully, you are positively to pass the course.
He probably is a good business learner, but he seems like not familiar with the information about Econ 102. He teaches lots knowledge which could not be included into the one level course. Too many information would be tested. Not recognized.
a great prof, and a relatively easy A (midterms and final pretty fair) depending on how much you listen in class and study! He is pretty straight forward with what he expects and always listens to our feedback! Also he is hella funny and makes the content more interesting/applicable.
I took Econ102 with Emrul, and his class made me choose econ as a major. He is passionate, well-spoken, funny, smart and polite at the same time. I never missed a class, so I did well on exams. He is amazing and we need more teachers like him.
Definitely would not recommend! He specializes in finance, and unfamiliar with the course content. Late for midterms, way too many questions for a 50mins midterm, he had to scale up. Way too many mistakes in his slides, and he can't even explain his model clearly. His answer key for hw is always unclear and hard to understand.
One of the best profs I ever had at UBC. He teaches well and goes deep into the concepts. I have learned more economics in his class than my other 4 economics courses combined. Definitely a good prof and highly recommended.
I just love going to his classes. The only class I have in the term where I do not fall asleep. He is very engaging, listen to questions and answers patiently. He is also available during office hours to help. Highly recommended.
I took the course for my IR program. Im not an econ major so its difficult for me. Emrul still made the course very engaging. Its quant and graph heavy, but he explains well. He is also available to help outside class. Very much recommended.
I took BUS315(investment course) with him. His lecture is interesting and fun with clear explanation and preparation. He makes 2 mt instead of final and 2 assignments. He is accessible and approachable! ! A very good prof!
Took bus315 with him. He makes the lecture very interesting, and many materials learned in the class are also useful in CFA exam! Topics such as stock valuation and bond valuation methods are very practical and be applied in actual life if you are doing investment. He is also accessible outside the class! Good prof and useful course!
Emrul is an great professor. His exams are fair and getting a good mark is easy if you're willing to put in some effort. He constantly relates the seemingly irrelevant subject matter to real world examples which invokes interest and helps cement what was taught. His story is also extremely inspiring, I would absolutely recommend taking his classes.
Extremely weird class. TAs kept changing and kept giving incorrect information regarding the materials which shall be in the exam. When I brought this up with Emrul he said the TAs aren't supposed to know anyway. He is very rigid about his office hours and it's very difficult to meet him if you have any conflict with your schedule. Quite absurd.
Emrul is the best prof I ever had at UBC. He is very hard working and gives a lot of time to students. He is patient and caring. Less assignments would be better.
Professor Hasan is the best instructor I met during university. He is clear on grading criteria, and gives amazing lectures. Makes you become interested in finance and Econ in his own way. His investment class is super helpful in passing CFA level 1 exam. Take his class and you won't regret it!! TRULY INSPIRATIONAL!
Emrul has been the best prof I've had at UBC! He's so passionate about his students' success. Taught practical things that we can use in our career and focused on really helping us understand what we need to know. Gave me a great foundation for graduate courses, and helped so much with my 490 paper by giving econometrics ideas and new techniques.
Dr. Hasan is caring and enthusiastic. While he may go off on tangents or irrelevant stories at times, they're generally funny and improve the atmosphere of the class. Participation matters for grades. He cares about your well-being, understands the importance of mental health, and will make up for lost lectures by doing them online.
Emrul is one of the best professors I've had at UBC. I learned more from this course than I did in in several others combined, because he focusses on applying concepts rather than memorization. He is an extremely fair grader. Despite being so busy, he makes the time for every single student and is extremely accessible outside of class.
Emrul cares about his students and focuses on the useful and applicable aspects of econometrics rather than on convoluted details. For instance, he highlighted the importance of following past literature and using similar control variables. I found that advice, and others he gave us extremely applicable while writing my ECON 490 thesis.
Definitely the worst prof I've ever met. His MT had a median of 50% which means half of the whole section failed simply because someone cheated in the exam (he suspected). Nobody got 90+ after a whole term's hardworking. I cannot see his respect to his students. Homework is heavy and weird. Pop up iclicker, so never miss a class.
He is the BEST BEST BEST prof I ever had in UBC. I love him. I wish I can take another of his class.
This man is the best best best professor I have ever met. Definitely suggested. He made everything very clear and you have clear expectation to the exams.
In my 4 years at UBC, this is the worst professor I've had. When he doesn't cancel class, he comes 10 mins late and ends 10 mins early. He just reads off of publisher-made slides, but worse than that just skips around aimlessly and has yet to explain a single concept. I hope he's pumping out Nobel-worthy research, because he is not teaching
He is one of best prof I have ever had. My major is not econ but he explained concepts very well. Im very surprised to see the prior comment because thats not true. Emrul spends a lot of time on teaching us important concepts. If u ask questions, he goes over the concepts again. Highly recommended.
Emrul is generally a very good teacher. He adapted very well when everything went online due to covid19. He made sure the classes are on schedule so that we do not loose academically. Thats dedication. Highly recommended even though the course is not easy.
Very good :) Highly recommended.
a very kind, accommodating, and helpful professor. i-clickers challenging, course outcomes unclear at times, but his passion for the content is clear. he offers plenty of opportunities to increase marks, and often says nothing you do in his class is for no reason - surveys etc result in a marks boost. very flexible and personable.
Dr. Hasan is a caring individual who tries to makes the hard subject matter easier to understand and relate it back to clear examples. He doesn't use the textbook but does use MyEconLab which can be bought separate. His tests are hard but manageable if you put the time in and learn your examples. Approachable outside of class and would recommend!
Emrul is great professor! His lectures are fun! As long as you follow his guidance, you will do well in this course. My learning experience was enjoyable! He is knowledgeable in Economics and Finance, so we learned a lot from him. Most importantly, he is always there to help students for course materials and career advice as well!
remember all the slides and do practice questions u will ace it
I think this is the first time I felt Im learning any econ. He is a very good prof. He talks a bit fast sometimes but he covers interesting stuffs. He gives practical examples and that makes the topics easy to grasp. Very recommended.
Dr. Hasan taught well online during the COVID-19 crisis. He adapted very quickly, and he is very clear in class. He has an accent (all of us do) but you will get used to it because he teaches well. You will not regret taking a course with him.
Emrul is really fun and considered of people's mental health and problems. His online classes are hilarious and his teaching is understandable. He offers office hours with the TA's and is really clear on what he expects from you. I would definetely recommend Emrul to anyone.
He is such a good prof and really cares for his students. He is also extremely funny and he is pretty lecture heavy, but the course should be good as long as you pay attention and do the work.
I have to say his exams are hard and the final was on the last day of class- so you don't have as much time to prepare. He really cares about his students and put in the effort to help them. Also, he was caring and gave student options to improve their overall grade (so if you do better on later tests, it replace some % of grades from earlier).
Best part about Prof. Hasan: great exams. The practice exams make the criteria really clear and if you memorize the slides and know the general calculations/graphs, you'll ace it. Prof. Hasan's lectures were also pretty chill and I looked forward to them as a break away from my other serious profs. group assignments are quite writing heavy though.
This course is difficult but useful and topics are interesting. The textbook helps a lot in understanding the materials. The prof is really caring and supportive, always talks about interesting things outside class. And the textbook chapters are rearranged by the prof so that it became MUCH more easier to understand.
From my experience I'd say this: he's a great lecturer who actually cares about his students - but you absolutely have to stay on top of readings for the course otherwise you will likely be lost during class. The lectures build on the readings. Ask questions, he's friendly and clearly interested in what he's lecturing about.
Professor Hasan is the best professor I've met at UBC. Besides his caring for student mental health, great willingness to give career advice, His class is full of joy and wisdom. Highly recommend taking his Econ355 at UBC; learning International trade models and policy tools gives you a great advantage in doing Macro-analysis as an Econ student.
I think this pro is overrated. I think his teaching skill is just so so. Be ready to get mental fatigue or depressed in his lectures coz he mentions cheating in every single class! I don't cheat. I know it's not right to cheat. He also gives us bad news. No good news at all. I've had enough bad news in the pandemic. Why not talking some postive?
Emrul is a really caring professor and he's quite lecture heavy so definitely attend the lectures and pay attention, he's quite good at explaining the concepts so that's what I loved most about him. Even though economics can be hard, he makes it enjoyable. The only downside is that he uses Proctorio.
This guy is so arrogant I find myself rolling my eyes at everything he says. Skip his classes and just read the lecture notes and you'll be fine.
I really want to do econ major now after taking this class with Emrul. I had a different thought last term when I took Econ101 with another prof. He makes lectures very interesting with a lot of real-life applications. Highly recommended. Will take more classes with him in the future.
The exams are hard and his last exam was on the last day of class. But he really cares about his students and put in the effort to help them. This is what I love about him. He gives options to improve our overall grade by offering different weight transfers, so I think he is fair.
I am retaking this course in my 4th year, and Emrul has been the best prof I've had at UBC. He's so inspiring, and I learned a lot from him over the whole term. He taught us some practical things too that we can use in our careers. He also gave me some great suggestions about my graduate programs I am planning to take in the future.
Emrul is the best professor I met at SFU. His grading criteria are a bit confusing but he gives an amazing lecture. He boosted my interest in finance. This class is super helpful in passing the CFA level 1 exam that I am taking in August 2020. Take his class and you won't regret it.
Dr. Hasan was by far my best and favourite prof. He is a hilarious guy, with an insane amount of knowledge about economics and finance. He adapted to online learning very well. If you are a good student who works hard, take his class and listen in the lectures. If you do that, you will succeed. But if you are "free-loader", you might struggle.
Professor Hasan is one of the few professors who ACTUALLY work for the students. He adapted very well to online classes and is very accommodating and considerate. His lectures are quite content heavy and often include material from outside the textbook so they are a must. Overall, a very fair professor.
I didnt like the use of Zoom with second device proctoring. He is always coming with bad news in class. I was very frustrated. His teaching is alright. He could just give us more good news during this difficult times.
Professor Hasan is a great guy and goes through all of the textbook material in depth. Everything on his exams is based on the textbook + lectures, so if you study and attend tutorial, it's an easy A. Be prepared for long group projects though. He is pretty easy to understand (compared to Khan) and will always answer your questions during lecture.
I took BUS315&413 with Emrul in 2021 Spring and Summer. He is the best finance teacher I have met in my life. He not only taught me a wide range of finance materials, covering the majority of the CFA curriculum, which built me a solid financial foundation for my future life but also strongly cared and helped me in life whenever I needed help.
his lectures were amazing. The trade models in the course are kind of hard for me since it required some concepts from ECON301 and 302 that I didn't took at that time. However he can explain them in a very thorough way. I found these models are pretty easy to understand in his lectures. Even during my internships I still benefited from his taught.
I took Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics in 2018W. That was an excellent experience. Dr. Hasan integrated a lot of interesting real-life cases with knowledge points. I applied what I learned during my internship in investment banking, connecting different economic information to give in-depth analysis and recommendations
This professor doesnt under the material in ECON326 that he is teaching. The R language is taught by the TA, and his lecture slides contradicts his sample exam answers.
I have learned so much in this course. He teaches R which is great. He has practical classes that are very helpful. Course content is a little tough but I liked it. Highly recommended.
My only complaint is lots of homework and the exams are too tough. Otherwise, I enjoyed the course a lot. Dr. Hasan explains things well.
I took his online course before and I was not disappointed. He is as good in class too. Take his class and you will not regret it.
He is definitely the best professor I've ever met. I gained practical and solid knowledge from him, and especially the chapters related to probit and logistic regression, which was applied to my ECON490 final essay, and I got a very satisfactory grade. He not only helped me academically but also gave me great support in life. Highly recommended!!
This is my second class with Emrul and he did not disappoint. My only complaint is too much homework but those are done in groups. No final. 3 exams instead.
Professor Hasan is amazing, and everything on his exams is based on the lectures and the assignments. He appreciates questions during lectures. He knows a lot about finance too which is an added bonus for us.
Really great professor! I love the material he teaches and the way he connects them to the finance side that he knows of! You should definitely take his class if you have the opportunity!
Emrul is a very knowledgeable professor with lots of Economics and Finance experience, you can easily tell from his thorough lectures. He makes each class so engaging with real life examples to teach difficult concepts, plus he genuinely cares for his students' success and is very accessible outside of class. Highly recommend taking his classes!
Undoubtedly the best prof I had at UBC so far! I liked the hands-on classes. Exams are not too hard. A lot of group works. But he teaches well both online and in-person.
ECON 457 is an easy A with professor Hasan as long as you do your work. That includes preparing for presentations, doing readings, attending class, engaging/participating in class, and being prepared for the exam. He provides opportunities to pursue own interests in International Economics, and gives great feedback. Very well respected prof!
Avoid him. This term, Prof Hasan had multiple times ditching his students, such as lecture cancelled because of his vacation delay, many shortened lectures because he had other things to do after class, etc. He wants group assignments to be hand-written, which he believes can prevent plagiarism but in fact making picking out cheaters even harder.
Amazing prof!
His classes are tolerable. This is the only class I go to. His review class is amazing! Highly recommended.
Genuinely cares about the students, unlike some other ECON profs. Very honest, which is a good thing for most people. Definitely take him for 102 if you can!
By far my favourite professor in my first year of university. Honest, caring, and extremely fair. Group assignments are long but tests are fair. Funny and never skipped a lecture because of how entertaining it was. Try to go to his career talks as well as it was very insightful. Could not recommend him enough!
At first I was skeptical and he seemed unapproachable. But I was quickly proven wrong. He really cares for students and changed grading schemes to benefit us when the class did poorly on a test. His lectures were engaging and he has a good sense of humour. It was generally a tough class but I really hope I can take more ECON classes with him.
His group assignments add up to almost 2,000 words.deadlines are tight, so be prepared.his class is also fast-paced,often skipping slides, students are required to read the ppt and textbooks by themselves.his exam is difficult, but it can also be fair, because in order to prevent free writers, he also took the article in the group homework in the mt.
You are expected to understand the slides and textbook before lectures. The lecture contents are heavy and required self-study. Get the full participation mark only if answer the top 25% frequently in piazza. You will receive a low participation mark even if come to every tutorial and lecture. Also, you may never get responses from his ta as well.
I loved sitting in the lecture. The course is tough due to the curve but overall I liked it. Professor Hasan spends a lot of time with students answering questions after the class.
I took the class as an elective, and I enjoyed the real-life examples a lot. No doubt my favourite course this term.
I found the course tough because my math is not very strong. Prof Hasan is very caring which makes the course tolerable.
I found the course challenging because I am not the best at statistics but still managed to do well. The prof is very caring, and will spend a lot of time with you if you have any questions. Toughest but also one of my favourite courses this term!
Prof Hasan has the best lecture and its very easy to understand, take his class if you are actually interested in Econ. But his exams and assignments are the hardest among all the first year Econ prof. Even harder than prof Gateman so be prepared to fail.
Hard exams but explains things really well!
very tough grader. gpa for all econ classes is now around 69 as a rule so it doesnt matter, but his rubrik is unclear and there is inconsistency among TAs. He can give you an answer and that answer can be wrong in his test. I got an A but was constantly frustrated. other than grades he is prepared, knowledgeable, and alws tries to be fair.
Loved all his lectures, an absolutely amazing prof. He is very organized and knows his content well, but is a tough grader.
Love Economics but I am not impressed with Emrul. I am not impressed his teaching style. Expects students to learn the material before coming to class and when in class he confuses you not because the material is hard but because he is not a good instructor. Avoid him if you want to learn since there are much better instructors at VSE.
I took economics as a major after taking Emrul's Econ102 class. I was very impressed with his teaching style, and he did not disappoint in Econ302 either. I also found him very inspirational as he is always available to help whenever you need him.
Great professor, will take courses that he will teach again. Very funny, excellent references from the real world to lectures and topics and lots to learn from. It's great to talk to Prof. Hasan after the lecture as he goes over many topics that you may need clearance on from lectures and you can listen to other people's questions for clarity.
Very outdated information and too much textbook feel. Over five years old. He does not keep you up to date in the real world of economics. It's a bare minimum learning experience that feels pretty archaic. Uninspiring class. Much better economics instructors at UBC.
I am loving his lecture. He connects macro with real life which makes it very interesting. Time goes very quickly in class. Highly recommended.
I am taking the class now and so far I am enjoying it. He also ran a career chat session for the students which was really helpful and gave me the boost I needed. The course itself is not so tough if you have some stat background.
This was my second course with Emrul and he is a delight. I found the course tough because I am not that good at coding. But the stuffs I learned there are not getting very useful in Econ 490. He is also always available to talk outside class. Take his class and you won't regret it.
Funny but not fascinating in class. First MT had nothing to do with lectures so avg was at 65%. Expects all students to know about stats coming in and skips through slides without explaining. I basically had to teach myself the whole course... He did though give very flexible weightings for exams which explains the A+ I got at the end.
His exams are the problem. He does not provide a formula sheet, and while studying for it, I felt like I spent most of my time just memorizing formulas. He instead should design his exams so that even with a formula sheet, unless you fully understand the content, you won't be able to do it. Also lectures are not helpful.
Love this prof! So funny, good lecturer, accessible outside class, relatable, and tries to help his students as much as possible. Make sure to go to class, he will randomly say stuff like "this will be on the final" or "this wont be on the final." Group projects worth quite a bit but super easy. Exams are tough but manageable
Professor Hasan makes Econometrics a fun topic. I was taking this and STAT251 simultaneously and if not for him, I would have failed both courses. He breaks down all the topics and formulae and makes it digestable.
Legend.
In professor Hasan econometrics class, he not only delivers comprehensive content to explain the foundational aspects of econometrics but also offers a specialized course teaching R Code. This lays a robust groundwork for future preparations in Econ 490 writing and opens doors for future research in Economics
Professor Hasan serves as a significant figure for students not just being a professor ,but also sharing valuable studying methods as the best friend. Within his lectures, he adeptly integrates real-life cases to illustrate intricate macroeconomic concepts to students.
I have taken the class in 2022 and I personally think it is a good experience. Dr.Hasan gives a comprehensive explanation to each topic covered in macroeconomics along with additional knowledge related to finance. He is always honest to his students and cares for his students. Through the course, I have learned a lot from Dr.Hasan in this course.
Do not take his sections unless you have to. Disorganized lectures, jumping between slides, assuming all students are experts in prerequisites and skipping many introductions of the topic. Way too many readings. The last assignment is due the day before the final exam period starts.
Disorganised. Overrated professor. Good at career coaching but not teaching.
so disorganized that it was hard to take notes and learn in class which made coming to class seem pointless. treats his lecture like a standup class which is fun for a month. some people say they like his finance background for extra input personally, I didn't because this isn't finance... we spent significantly longer on that unit for no reason
this course was so disorganised it's funny. have our exam and the coding part in two days but no clarification on the logistics and content. not a bad guy but if you don't want a superficial understanding of econometrics, don't take it with him. exams are fairly easy but annoying (filled with vague multiple choice questions). better to avoid
Ridiculous course. He goes so fast at the end of the term so basically you need to restudy the materials by yourself. The final exam is chaos and nobody knows what is going to happen.
Always late for the lectures. The lectures were so inefficient, and he barely explained the content; instead, he read the slides. Always said whatever came to his mind while ignoring the structure of lectures and topic sequences.
Two more days to the coding part exam, however, he said that we will have a range from two to four hours of online exam? A range? Seriously? Isn't it student's basic rights to know the exam details and time frame? Very very poorly disorganised. Feel very unfair and not well prepared for the coding part, and he left the country already.
1 out of 5 for sure, especially this semester. Never care about student's question. Ask us to use piazza for questions but never answer one of them. Never come out to clarify concepts. Just letting the students to get panic. Exams are super vague. Avoid him in full cost. Probably one of the worst 4.0/5 professor in VSE.
His final this year is about 4.5 hours, which is 2 hour more than normal exam times. The course is disorganized and provide zero practice questions for the final. Final exam itself is so confusing and the format of short answer questions were never seen before. Away him if you can!
Dr.Hasan is very knowledgeable in Economics, but I found this course disorganized. His exams are tough especially because he does not provide less or no practice questions on the chapters and you must try to find some on your own. The midterm and final had questions that I found were unfair relative to what was emphasized in lectures.
Best ECON prof at UBC hands down. You will not regret taking any course with him and will learn so much. He is a beacon of knowledge and is very good at keeping lectures interesting.
I saw the reviews of 5 and thought it would be good. Maybe it was then however, it felt very disorganized and lots of changes were made regrading coding assignments along with last minute information on it which was unfair to us. I wouldnt take it again
Very simple and straightforward comment on this course: you can clearly see the differences between professors and lecturers from taking his lectures.
Prof.Hasan is one of a kind. Very hilarious and engaging in his lectures. He cares about his students and will answer your questions in depth. As long as you put in the effort, the papers explored in class are super interesting and you will learn concrete understandings of many practical issues in International Economics. Highly recommend.
Emrul is hilarious and I'd recommend his seminar to everyone. He focusses on facilitating rather than lecturing and only adds with hilarious comments. He is however extremely knowledgeable and you can ask him all sorts of questions. Course is mainly groupwork and easy to do well on. Definitely recommend!
Loved every bit of it
I have taken 3 classes with him and econ 302 was very fun and practical with Emrul. I would recommend his courses very highly.
Very good. One of the best prof I have met in UBC. He usually late for class for 5 mins. He tried to explained the concept as easy as possible and then move to the formulas.
Extremely high workload, 4000thousand words to write for one single problem set.
I took ECON326 and ECON325 with Professor Emrul in Winter 2023-2024 and Summer, which built a strong foundation in econometrics and teamwork. His engaging teaching style made complex topics accessible. I'm grateful to Professor Emrul for sparking my interest in econometrics.
I studied ECON326 and ECON325 with Professor Emrul during the Winter 2023-2024 and Summer sessions, which provided a solid foundation in econometrics and collaboration. His dynamic teaching style made difficult concepts easier to understand. I'm thankful to Professor Emrul for igniting my passion for econometrics.
he looks like a great prof tbh. I like his teaching methods but his way of teaching is not very organised for this course, compared to other profs teaching this course he is not doing the best job.
Emrul's 356 class was an immense disappointment as I was initially quite excited about taking his class. It is clear now that he has no idea how to properly communicate his ideas. His lectures are unorganized and occur in a haphazard fashion. If you want to keep your GPA at a relatively high level, I would advise to 355 with Vaney instead.
The professor clearly has knowledge, however his ability to communicate it is severely lacking in comparison to other professors in the Econ department. He gives no practice exams or guidance on how to prepare for exams, and lectures are extremely disorganized. Withdrew from the class due to the professor making learning the material impossible.
Extremely long-winded group assignments due right before the midterm. Problem set solutions were given only hours before the midterm exam, leaving no time for review. While extremely knowledgeable, he reads off the slides and it seems like he is making assignments and class material at the last possible minute.
ppl hate him but hes just a chill guy
Emrul is a fantastic professor, and this is my second course with him. I believe he mentioned this is his first time teaching 356, and it shows. Nevertheless, his delivery of the material and the way he connects it to real life are amazing. His connection between indifference curves and portfolio management is a great blend of economics+finance.
Econ 302 felt daunting to me because I'm not very good at economics, but Emrul's explanations made it much easier to understand. I obviously recommend him.
I took this course a long time ago with Emrul, and he's still amazing! I met him recently for a career chat, and he seems even more knowledgeable now. He really helped me land the job I wanted. He has always been a great teacher, and I still remember him fondly.
Simply awesome 👏
I am not an econ major but I learned a lot from this class. He is always available to help. Loved him. Wish he was in our IR department.
Lots of papers from multiple international economics subjects. The class is more than doubled in size this year as he was saying so he seemed very burned out by this. But still he gave us time over the weekend and also sometimes after 8pm. He cares. I'm not sure what people are writing giving 1/5. Can ratemyprof not stop bots?
Got a very thoughtful email from him when I said what I'm going through. He always seems so genuine and definitely he cares. Course was a little tough for others but I found it easy. Obviously recommend him.
He is passionate about teaching and uses engaging visual materials enhance the learning experience. He has a fun approach to explaining concepts simply and understandably. Always available to help and support his students, answers any questions, makes time and very caring. Negative comments are projections. So don't get caught up in the biases.
Overall, I really liked the professor, but not so much the course. He made the course as interesting as he could. I recommend you read the lecture material beforehand, as he assumes everybody knows or has a general idea of what is discussed. He added finance into the class which is super fun and cool! Cool guy, and a good prof!
Prof. Emrul's classes are a pleasure to attend! He connects course material to real-life examples like very few other ECON professors. He's understanding, explains concepts thoroughly, and helps students beyond expectations. Grading is fair. The course isn't easy, but with regular lecture attendance and revision, you'll do well.
Every single time I asked for help, whether over email or in person, he was there. I'm not sure how he manages to give so much time to students. He looked very tired because of it, maybe. I learned a lot. Every IR student should take this course with Emrul. Highly recommended.
Lots of preparation, projects, assignments, etc., and also a final, but I still enjoyed it.
You would learn the backbone of International Economics and CFA accounting. Amazing course and an amazing teacher honestly. I learned things i would never forget for my career as a diplomat. I loved the course although ppl were complaining but they dont understand that he was teaching from the assumption that your smart enough to know the basics.
He is a very responsible professor. Although the course content can be a bit challenging, as long as you study hard and make sure to learn the "R" content in comet, you will be fine. "R" skills will help you a lot in future economics courses.
He is a very responsible professor who takes the time to answer any questions you may after class with great care. He assigns 3 to 4 assignments and completing them thoroughly will be very helpful for your exam.
Amazing professor, with engaging lectures. If you pay attention in the class and take notes, you are sorted for a high grade. I liked the way he taught certain concepts with real life examples, and his jokes are too fun.
Econometrics GOAT. I was terrified of 326 but he made it so chill, recommend taking it with him. Lots of in class review, examples, and adjusts the course based on student feedback. He really cares about his students and gives you ample opportunities to boost your grade and succeed. Also hilarious and iconic.
Emrul is an unbelievable professor for Econ 326—especially because he makes us work with real data and practical topics instead of focusing too much on boring theories. He explains concepts in layman's terms rather than relying on complex mathematical proofs. And if you ever need help with those, he's always available during office hours.
Best econometrics prof, especially if you're better with practical topics than theories/proofs. Emrul is knowledgeable and loves his work. He is not a career professor which is nice because he has a level of awareness that most profs don't. My only complaint is that he consistently posted ipeers late and arrived late to every class.
The best prof at UBC for sure. I wish I could do a little better but I have no complain given what I have learned in this course. Thanks Emrul.
Wonderful lectures, funny, entertaining, and kind. While the class can be difficult at times, if you attend the lectures, you will be fine. One of the best professors at UBC, I would recommend him to anyone.
Great course recommends to take it, very caring prof as well!
I wasn't bored learning math all the time.
I find math difficult, but the prof made the course material easy to understand. Good grading system as well.
Best professor I've had at UBC. Nice, funny, extremely accomplished track record. Not theory-heavy, very engaging lectures, concepts actually apply to the real-world and future careers. Goes above and beyond, shares career advice, gives extra credit and has immense knowledge of finance, econ, PE, consulting, investment banking.
Prof Emrul is so genuinely interesting, captivating, and funny in lectures. As long as you go to class and complete the assignments and practice midterm/final, you will get a good grade. He makes the content seem simple and memorable for the exam, and even provides bonuses if you feel you are behind. Hands down the best econ prof I've had so far :)
Emrul is the most student centered and passionate professor I've had at vse so far. You can truly feel how much he cares about helping students grow as learners and people. his teaching style made math not horrible at ALL!!
I took this class in the summer so the 3 hour 9am lectures were kinda hard to get through. However, he made the lectures very engaging and interesting, giving many real-world examples to help us understand the topics. I highly recommend going to lectures. The exams were quite fair, and the slides are well-made, no need for the textbook. Great prof!
Great mentor.
Professor Hasan is easily the best professor I've had. I took ECON 325 with him. Go to every lecture — he simplifies everything and makes the material clear. Midterms and finals match the problem sets in difficulty. He's supportive in and out of class. If you put in effort, he'll meet you halfway. Great lecturer, mentor, and therapist all in on
Professor Emrul is one of the best professors I've had at UBC. Great lectures and fair tests. He is very supportive in both academic and professional settings and always willing to help during his office hours. I'd recommend that anyone take his courses!
Emrul was the best professor - encouraging, helpful, lenient and intelligent. He deconstructed a lot of current events during discussions in an insightful and didactic way, and provided a lot of career advice outside of class. He really cares about teaching and makes sure his students feel like his priority. 10/10 would recommend!
Dr. Hasan is an incredible professor. His personality and style of teaching is extremely intuitive and engaging as he incorporates real-life application and humor to make concepts (even tough ones) enjoyable! He is super caring and will make time to discuss things with you, even topics not directly related to course material. 100% recommend.
Amazing professor. Super kind and patient, always willing to help. Grading is fair and quite generous as long as you put in effort. Definitely recommend taking this class if you get the chance.
One of the best profs I've had at uni. He's transparent with grading, gives such good feedback, super accessible, creative, funny and easy to talk to. He loves 457 and wants everyone as engaged as possible, and gets to know every student. Especially if you're interested in a wide range of economics topics from different angles, def take the class.
Dr. Hasan is an excellent professor for ECON 457. He's caring and approachable, and he gives thoughtful, practical advice on projects and coursework, as well as on broader academic and life goals. The workload is manageable, with two 30-min presentations on an IR/Econ paper, plus a final paper and exam. Highly recommend taking this course with him.
I heard so many good reviews about Emrul before taking the class, and I can honestly say that he will be the best professor you can choose for your seminar! Explains concepts in a funny, relatable way, and cares a lot about students' development, both academically and professionally—good mentor and teacher, best econ professor so far.
