I really enjoyed this class up until the final which he made a take-home test from hell. I went from an A in the class to a C. But I feel like I learned a lot and he is incredibly helpful in his office.
Boring lecturer, but his material was too easy!
Dr. Shi is the man. He has a real fire for the material (linguistics) and that comes out in his lectures. Also, he has a good sense of humor. Hard not to like him.
Amazing teacher!!! I recommend him for Eng 301 as the #1 choice.
Despite this accent, Shi's awesome for linguistics. During the test, he'd go through the rows and literally tell you if and what was wrong with an answer. You didn't really even need the text. Attendance is a must though. He was perfect for summer.
He is a VERY nice professor. The material can be really confusing, but if you attend class and ask questions, you'll do fine. Do not miss class!
Dr. Shi has a very cute sense of humor, and he is a sweet man. Attend(and pay attention to)all his lectures and you will do fine in his class. If you are confused, he is happy to review the material with you.
He's really nice, helpful, clear, organized, intelligent, and more. He totally took me under his wing in my pursuits of linguistics. In the beginning he seems a bit aloof, but I think you end up growing on each other. I enjoyed him alot! (attending lectures: a must; book purchase: unnecessary)
open notes allowed on midterm & final.cant say it helped me though because i still struggled.nice man but boring material and lectures.i thought i was gonnoing to get a d, but thankfully, i got a c. =)
He is very easy you get to use your notes for midterm and final. I learned a lot and really recommend his class. The subject is very dry even if you take it with someone else.
Extremely boring lectures! His lectures are unclear because of his heavy accent and his sloppy writing. I found myself drawing the characters he wrote on the board and everyone in theclass was constantly asking each other what he said. Open notes for test but that doesn't help. I passed with a B.
Willing to help! makes the class fun, lets you use notes for the test.
The most boring teacher I have ever had. He is very hard to understand, he needs to enroll in an accent reduction program. He knows his stuff and the tests are open note. I can't say I learned anything in this class.
Enchao-such a nice guy and it seems like he really knows his stuff, but whoa! What did he say? I felt "ver ver shicky" about the class. He lets you use your notes, but you need to! Why are future elem. teachers taking this class anyway? It's so abstract. Very helpful though & funny and really pushes you to get a master's degree someday. :)
Brilliant man. Very helpful. A bit hard to understand at first, but your ear gets tuned in. The material is monotonous at times. Can use notes for midterm and final. Drink coffee, take good notes, and you'll be fine. He is always available for outside consultations--a plus.
I am taking this professor right now for the summer and he is really funny, and he loves what he teaches. He speaks english and chineese yet her speaks really good english. Take him because he is good and you DONT NEED TO BUY THE BOOK because he gives you a hand out every class. And you can use your notes on the test
You will have to take this class, make sure it's with Enchao! The best prof in the department.
yes he has an accent but still very understandable. lets you use your notes on exams and even gives you his notes weekly so you don't even need the book. highly recommended, great professor!
HE IS AWESOM!He lets you use lecture notes durring the tests. He also gives you the handouts with explanations. He is willing to help you if you ask. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to pass this course.
Great guy~! Take him and you'll love him! Very smart and is always willing to help...
Professor Shi was very interesting, as was the subject he taught. The class can tend to be confusing, but it's grammer, it's not his fault. He's also very adorable and funny, which are always added bonuses.
He IS adorable, and funny too. The subject is boring but he explains it well.
He is so fabulous!!! He gives you lecture notes, you can use your own notes on the midterm/final. He is so funny. He gives a daily mediatation (boys will let you down - not linguistics!). He's clear and is very helpful. For this class you must have done well and understood your Eng302 or you'll be lost. I would take him all over again if I could.
He is so lovely. The Best prof.in Linguistics at CSUN. He is very helpful. He is so funny.
Cutest professor ever!! He is one of the best professors Ive had at CSUN, he is so helpful and motivating that you get interesting in what he's talking about...most importantly hes super funny..must take professor he will make your semester
He has a accent when he speaks, so sometimes it's hard to understand him.
Very nice professor. Open note exams (doesn't necessarily make it easier, though). Tough subject, but he teaches it well.
This professor is a very kind and sweet man. He has a great sense of humor. Although the subject is very DRY, he makes it as engaging as possible. Highly recommend him! Open notes exams and he is a very easy grader.
Shi is really nice. The class can get boring but its just the material. I wouldn't say the class is easy but there isn't a lot of work. Two tests and a final which are open note. He gives you lecture notes so you don't have to buy the book. He isn't fussy about attendance but its good to show up because you get the notes.
This is for you, Professor Shi ... this professor is a WELL DRESSED MAN, has a great sense of humor, & very helpful. GREAT Professor.
Great Professor. Dresses very nice and is humorous. Gives his own lecture note booklet. I highly recommend Dr. Shi.
Class is soooo BORING!!! and material is hard. He has a really heavy accent and you can't understand what he's saying half the time. Nevertheless, he's very fair and he curves all grades. If you study for the tests, you should be able to get a grade of C. There are no assignments or extra credit. Grade is entirely based on tests.
He knows the theory of grammar very well, but English is not his first language, so sometimes it was confusing and he would make mistakes. I was stressed because I didnt think i was learning anything, but he curves, so I got an A.
The subject is veryyyyyy dryyyyyy, however Shi tries to make it as engaging as possible. Class was very easy for me, just pay attention and take good notes because notes are allowed on exams. I didnt study, just used my notes.
Shi is a theoretical linguistic with his principle interest in syntax and Universal Grammar, so he teaches language acquisition from a theoretical and primarily syntactic point of view. Some background in syntax (Ling 404) would be helpful if you take Ling 417 from this professor. Take good notes and READ the textbooks, and you'll do fine.
I've taken 301,302,and 417 with professor Shi. He mentioned not to say "nice" on the ratemyprofessors.com, haha. He has an accent and his writing is kinda not legitable but he tells us our writing isn't legitable lol... which is true. I had decent experiences with this professor. I highly recommend taking all his course if you are LRS major.
Boring guy he is not a good teacher. If you don't understand the subject don't take him.
Everyone told me to take him but trust me you can find a better teacher! you cant understand what he is saying and his writting is HORRIBLE!! no reviews for the exam and the entire class is fustrated with him! yes its open note test but that does not help at all!! i hope i pass this class.....
Dr. Shi is a super nice guy, but worthless as a teacher. He is supremely disorganized, cannot explain ANYTHING, and has to be bullied into reviewing for tests. Avoid at all costs!!!
An extremely disorganized teacher. Hard to understand at times due to accent. However, very little real effort is required, so it depends on what you want from the class. Lower-division Ling class highly suggested. You can use your notes on the exams so make sure you take good notes. Didn't crack a textbook! And couldn't sell them back!
OK, He is a bit hart to understand on the first week due to his thick accent. However, he tries to make the subject as relevant as possible, it is not his fault the topic is very dry. He lets you use the notes on exams but you still need to read them carefully b/c exams are tricky. Don't buy the texts b/c he gives you all you need to know in the ha
One more thing, you must bring some caffeinated drink to class, or you'll fall asleep. There was a lady this summer who slept the whole time in front of the professor. I thought she was going to get whiplash!!! Again, he is a good professor but the subject matter is quite dry, so don't write him off as an option.
Nightmare. Not only a tough subject but not well taught. Everything piled on in the end with hardly any explanation. Final took 3 hours! He is nice and funny but this class felt impossible.
If you are thinking of taking this class with this teacher stop thinking about it. You will regret it because you will end up teaching yourself a very difficult subject. You'll be lucky to get a passing grade.
Tough subject made tougher by peculiar pedagogy. Shi is a nice and funny man - quite charismatic, but the way he taught syntax rendered those 4 months with him nearly insufferable. I'm not sure how to explain this class to anyone not acquainted with syntax. Shi needs to be more structured with his approach. Not sure how, but managed a B in the end.
This class was very difficult, and I can't say that I learned a lot in it. This professor is pedagogically deficient, although it's clear that he knows a great deal about Syntax. There's no homework in this class, so no way to judge your understanding of the material prior to the tests. I'd recommend taking a different professor if one is available
He knows his stuff, but his English pronounciation is horrible and his writing is worse.
You will fail if you take this class
He is horrible and his writing is really bad.Do not taake him.
Prof. Shi is very nice, but his class is difficult. I almost never showed up because I got frustrated, and the entire semester we all thought we were failing. However, I got a B because I studied for the tests. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK Q'S. He is helpful if you ask. No hw. 3 tests + a difficult final, but he curves I think. Txt bk useless
One of the most brilliant professors I've ever had! Challenging, but well worth taking. The man can dance circles around anyone when it comes to grammar/syntax. He shaped my college experience, and I will always be grateful to him.
The class is extremely complicated, but he's the best person to teach it and make it quite enjoyable. Don't miss class time b/c he tends to explain the reading in class. He has great sense of humor, numerous insights, gives good tips for your final research paper. He's English is very good, and he's one of the best ones of the department.
The previous comments are likely written by Enacho. The comments are opposite of how he teaches. He does not explain the reading, Instead he talks mainly about tangents. Homework is given back the day of the final. He does everything last minute & doesn't fulfill class promises. Class notes & Lecture are illegible. Avoid Enacho or ready a petition.
Hey if you come to class and act interested you will prob end up with a good grade. Everyone I know ended up with an A or B.
Don't let any initial confusion hold you back...he'll go over things if there's any confusion--IF you're willing to really learn it. His humor sometimes comes off as sarcasm, but he means well. HW is easy, just DO it! Exams are a challenge, so form a study group. Lectures are most helpful, so don't miss any classes.
Ok so Linguistics is already a confusing topic and if you take it with this professor your going to be BEYOND LOST!He has a heavy accent and very hard to understand, can't read notes on board, very boring class, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! DO NO I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!
He is a very nice man so I feel bad about really hating the subject. I was confused the entire semester and I left the class not knowing anything. But I did all the hw (it was probably all wrong) and BS'd the tests and got a B, so I can't complain. Im glad this class is behind me and as someone else said, it's not his fault that the subject is dry
do not take this class or this professor. it is extremely difficult to understand the material and the professor. he wasn't very helpful at all. i tried my best but ended up not being able to continue. DO NOT TAKE
This is a naturally difficult class with 4 textbooks. Nice man but his accent makes him hard to understand. That's a problem with such a complex and difficult subject. He kindly provides class notes which unfortunately require a lot of work to understand. You will need more coffee before this class.
In a class where most students enter with little to no knowledge of the subject matter, you need to have a good, clear prof. Shi is definately not. Thank God for the lecture notes and book because you spend most of the class listening to tangents, correcting his mistakes or not being able to understand what he's saying. BAD.
This is a difficult, abstract subject and he does very little to make it comprehensible. His tests are 100 times harder than any examples given in class. He never returned the homework. Four textbooks, all extremely hard to read. Try to find a different teacher for this class.
His two test are hard, no scantrons and there are only 2 homework assignments the entire semester so there are virtually no points to fall back on so do well on tests!Attend class and review ecture notes, text book is refrenced but only 2 questions from text on test. Hard class to pass Nice teacher but tough subject to understand without practice.
He is very hard to understand. He has an accent but that has nothing to do with the fact that his ideas are so vague and theoretical. He doesn't explain things well and ended confusing people more than helping them out. He has one giant assignment the whole semester, which is a research paper. If you could avoid a class with him please do!
He's really not that bad. If you're willing to work hard and put in effort to do well, then you're going to succeed. He'll gladly answer questions, but you have to ask them if you're confused. Do the homework, and make sure you go to class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it definitely helps. He's really funny too.
You have to go to class and pay attention. Make sure you do all the homeworks, and the example problems he puts at the end of lectures. Those help a lot and are exactly what wil be on the test. He is hard, and hard to understand, but the class is totally doable if you try and pay attention. I have an A
He is a really great teacher! I would recommend him. Definitely pay attention because it is easy to get lost though. Overall, he is forgiving when it comes to grading and a really nice guy who values his students! Would take him again for another class.
Overall, great professor. He's initially hard to understand, but you get used to his accent. Not an easy class so attend the lectures, write down all the examples , do the homework and if needed, go to his office hours. He's extremely helpful, but you have to ask/stop him if you're confused. Definitely cares about his students.
Grade depends on one paper and there is no way to predict how well you will do, since he seems completely arbitrary. He required students to make major last minute changes on completed papers just a few days before the due date. Lectures are rambling and he is either unwilling or unable to clarify things that are not understood.
Hard to understand, not very accessible, doesn't respond to email.
Class material is difficult, which is why attendance is mandatory. However,by doing the homework and asking questions, the course became easier. He is very helpful and attentive to answering and clarifying questions. There are two exams that represent 80% of grade. Get a good grade on first one because final was much harder. I got an A.
This was a nightmare class. I don't know how I got a B because I hardly understood anything. His explanations were more confusing than the lectures. I didn't feel I had learned much here.
He has memorized an amazing number of facts, but that does not make him a good teacher. His idea of clarifying hard questions is to tell you to read more outside of class. Very condescending attitude toward students. Extraordinarily difficult material is made more difficult by his poor teaching style. And he is always late to class.
I really enjoyed his classes. first taking his class you realized that you are dealing with a really high level individual. And he does explain well but learning syntax is difficult. He really challenges you to be a high level scholar.i think this type challenge is what some student take as him being less helpful. All students need thsi
He's a great guy but not a very clear teacher. The books he assigns might not be necessary: just take notes in class. If you can teach yourself Linguistics you'll be okay, but good luck otherwise. Also, the IPA he uses is different than what I learned before. Talk about frustrating!
I highly discourage you to take Syntax with him. He does NOT explain well, he just assumes you already know everything. Gives HW, but never returns it, however it is a big percentage of your grade (20% if I remember correctly). So you have no feedback, a teacher that doesn't know how to teach and a difficult class. Have fun!
Professor Shi class is very interesting, I was interested in the subject, but indeed it was hard. He only gives out a midterm and final which are 80% of your grade. Honestly I feel if he offered more test over little areas I would've done better. The test were difficult and a lot of people failed. Overall, he is willing to help, funny man.
He is a good professor and he makes his lectures funny and interesting but the information is hard to understand. Your entire grade is based of two test, most people in the class did not do well. The study guides are not extremely similar to the test.
DO NOT TAKE. I am an A student and will say that he is a HORRIBLE professor. He doesn't explain the material well and he has such a strong accent, it is hard to understand what he is saying, which is obviously crucial when teaching any sort of Linguistics. Example: he pronounces root as joot. He also tells his graduates that he HATES undergrads.
The subject matter itself is difficult if you over-analyze it. Other than that, this class was a breeze. His accent is minimal and you can understand him just fine. His explanations started getting flimsy during the second half of the semester.
Understand that the course material is very difficult, but it is doable, provided that you attend, ask questions, and read the lecture notes. Visit his office hours if you are struggling because it really helps. He curves his exams and his homework is graded by whether you did it or not. He is a good professor, but don't expect to cruise by.
The material itself requires a lot of studying. There are 4 homework assignments and 2 tests that make up your grade. The study guides he provides is pretty accurate as to what's on the tests. The lectures are a bit confusing due to his accent but you get used to it.
I don't understand how he has an 'A' as his rating. His accent is difficult to understand, pronounces words incorrectly as well as misspells words on the board. Does not use power-points, only writes on the chalk board. Only graded on 4 homework assignments and 2 tests, with no final. Take this class with a different professor.
I only looked at this site out of curiosity. Students complained about his class, but it wasn't a bad course. Students made it much more complicated than it actually was. He is very open to input from students, very flexible, and sincerely wants students to do well. Come to every class, pay attention, ask questions, and you will do well!
Professor Shi teaches Modern Grammar, the subject alone is complex. His accent was far too thick to understand what he was saying in his lecture. The course moves fast, so make sure to read and take plenty notes. But 2 tests to determine your grade? That gives little leeway to improve. I would recommend taking someone else. Second text was not used
Don't take this professor. He never explains things and the majority of the time just talks about things that are irrlevent to the subject. He is really confusing in his lectures and never answers questions. Take a different professor.
He is a good professor but the course itself is intriguing. You must study the material if you want to pass. There is only a midterm and a final, no homework assignments at all. Class participation is 20% of your grade, the midterm is 30% of your grade, and the final is 50% OF YOUR GRADE!
This is the worst professor I have had in my college career. The entire class didnt understand anything and he refused to change the way he taught us. He talks trash about Americans being lazy and is condescending. If you want to learn anything dont take him. That is why his class always has spots open.
Just don take him. Seriously. Only 2 test to prove yourself. CSUN needs to get rid of him.
Should have withdrawn when I had the chance. This is the worst class I have taken in my college career. 95% lecture and barely any opportunity to apply/practice the very difficult/complex material. Homework sets are useless because he doesn't go over answers so you're never totally confident you're doing it right. Wish I could give him a zero.
I never thought I would say this but I wish he assigned homework. Because there's no homework, there's no way to judge your understanding of the material before the tests, which are super hard and would frankly be so much easier if we actually had any opportunity to practice. He should really rethink his approach to teaching this class.
I honestly have a huge problem with professors like this because they get so caught up in prepping us for the real world (something he frequently told us this semester) they forget their job is to make sure we absorb and comprehend the material and to not make it more complicated than it needs to be. Take someone else if you can!
Do not take this class! There are only two take home tests and those two tests define your grade. He does not lecture well and does not prepare you for those tests. I REPEAT do not take his class. You will regret every second of being in his class I can promise you that!
This is an extremely difficult class, but Dr. Shi is the kindest man you will meet. Go see him during his office hours and he will help you. Both exams are take-home exams. You are allowed to work with classmates to master the content, and he curves the grades. Youll learn a lot in this class! Take it!
Professor grades only by 2 exams take home, both a midterm and final. If you go to office hours he will help you. Material was really hard, but the take home tests helped so much.
I do not recommend this professor. Linguistics is a really great subject but if you take this professor he will make you hate linguistics. His lectures and way of teaching is not understandable and not clear. The tests are heavy and you do not get enough practice, actually you get no practice for the 2 tests.
Professor Shi is very nice. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours and pay attention in class. I wouldnt take the class again but he is very helpful.
Grade is based on two exams. Take lots of notes and exams are take home but you will spend lots of time on those exams! A great subject but really tough to understand.
Linguistics is very hard. But Dr. Shi is very understanding and kind. He is willing to help you if you ask for help. If you miss class, you'll have trouble catching up since the material itself is difficult. He doesn't assign homework but he does give 2 take-home exams. They're based on everything he's taught, lecture notes are provided.
Professor Shi is very nice as a person, his teaching however is terrible. I have taken both ENG 301 & 302 & hardly anything is different. His speech is different from ours so he teaches things in his own way. He only grades you on two assignments; midterm and the final. If you fail one you basically fail the class. Wouldn't recommend,
Linguistics isn't my favorite subject and Modern Grammar is very difficult. The professor gets off topic a lot. He's very nice and tries to be helpful, but I wouldn't recommend taking this course with him. The final grade is made up of two tests and there is no homework or other assignments that can be used as practice. He solves problems in class.
He's not very helpful, seems reluctant to answer questions. He likes to talk about how tough he had it as a student. His response to a question is often to suggest more reading. His grading criteria is unclear.
Grades by two exams (but don't let this scare you) go to his office hours and attend every class especially leading up to the exams! He will help you. During his online class he would give some answers to questions during class so do not skip. Ask a lot of questions. He's super nice. Help each other!
This was one of the toughest courses I have ever taken, and I am a CD major; however, Professor Shi provides LOTS of help and holds office hours to answer questions. The material is difficult but he understands this and just requires that you put forth your best effort. I would not take this class again, regardless of who teaches it!
There is two tests throughout the semester one midterm and one final that is it to determine your grade. This was not an easy class by all means but I got an A on both tests by studying the notes in class and hearing his lectures attentively when he is explaining test questions. I advise you to do the same and you will pass.
I would recommend one taking this course if you are good with communicating. There is a midterm and a final and some points added if you participate in class. If you go to class before the exams he will help with any questions and basically clears the scary look of the long exam. I got a good grade and he truly cared about answering all my question
Took him last semester (Fall 2021), is very open to questions on the assignments. Only two take-home assignments and a final assignment. No homework in this class, encourages students to speak up. I took this class since it was the only course that was available. Even though I am not a linguistics or speech pathology major, I kinda enjoyed it.
Do. Not. Take. His. Class. He is incredibly rude, handwriting is terrible, cannot spell correctly even though it's a GRAMMAR CLASS, and all he does is complain how his daughter's Chinese is too American. I corrected him on his spelling and he was incredibly offended and told me to ignore it. Incredibly rude, AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!!
Had quite a few hw assignments I never saw a grade for. His accent is very thick and his handwriting is awful, so it can be difficult to understand his lectures--rely on lecture notes to fill in gray areas. Only exams were 2 take homes that he gave us 2 weeks to do and answered lots of questions for. Overall, not ideal, but not the worst.
So he has a really heavy Chinese accent, which is something he cannot control. However, it makes it difficult to understand him as he talks fast and writes extremely messy. He has homework assignments that you have to print out and he is extremely lenient with the turn-in time. Tests are take-home and he works with them in class. He's funny, tho.
His accent is so strong, which does not help the fact that he teaches linguistics. His writing is so bad, impossible to take notes from. Doesn't use canvas! Most assignments are done and turned in on paper. On the flip side, he is a nice guy, accepts late work, and all of his major assignments are take home tests. make friends and compare work!
Graded by 2 take-home tests and "homework" which he never collects and if you're in class when it's due you get full credit. He goes over the take-home test the week leading up to its due date so if you go to class on those dates you will get most of the answers from him.
He once referred to Scientific American as "some magazine". His grading criteria were never made clear. Instead of answering questions, he would tell students to find and read all the articles mentioned as sources in the textbook or articles we read. He said students should study instead of eating.
TAKE HIM! Not sure why he has a bad rep. Yes his accent is heavy and has sloppy writing but all the notes are in canvas so just fill it in. Only 2 take home tests which he gives you answers and encourages you to ask! ask! ask! HE WILL HELP! He is very chill as well so if you are struggling or need to retake the test, ask and he will work with you!
This professor is inclined to provide few grading events; thus, grades may be based on only one or two papers or tests. When asked questions, he often advises students to just read more, and may suggest reading all the references listed at the end of an article. He provided test study guides that were unrelated to actual test content.
Grades were based on only one or two tests or papers. Instead of answering questions, he suggested more reading and told students to read all the references at the end of an article. He provided test prep that was unrelated to the actual test.
I dont know why this professor has such a bad rating. This class isn't easy by any means, but this professor is willing to help you. He cares more about you LEARNING the material, rather than just passing the tests. He's super funny. 2 take home tests that he will review with you in class. He curves them as well. I would 100% take him again.
Professor Shi is a very kind man and a wonderful professor. He's very helpful and receptive to all questions. The class itself is incredibly easy if you pay attention during the lectures. Grades are composed of two take home tests, which he reviews in class.
He is difficult when grading because he's picky with what he's looking for. However, he always allows the students to ask questions and takes the time to answer them clearly. As long as you actually take notes and pay attention in class, you're going to do fine. He is very helpful and even makes jokes to keep you entertained.
