His teaching is confusing. Most of the time he is not prepared for lecture. Exams are hard. If you don't have the exact wording of the answer key he will take points off. Very bad board writting. He writes and then quickly erases. You can survive but you won't enjoy the class.
Very confused! I would have enjoyed the class much more if he had prepared for lecture-His tests were hard in the way that if you didnt write exactly what he wanted, you recieved no credit. The TA made the class worst...especially since he GRADED all the tests-and barely new how to speak english!!
Horrible grammar so tests are confusing and packet is incomprehensible. Talks during the tests, very distracting. Will do anything to argue why you don't deserve a grade change even if you really do. No textbook, but will assign readings from literature so you will be overwhelmed. Must attend lecture but beware of the super fast power point!
This class is difficult. But if you everything he tells you to do you will do fine. He only gave out 5 As and 3 A+s in my class, but put your work in because he also doesn't fail anyone. There is no book. Read the packets 100 times, no joke. Always go to class and when your taking his tests know that he wants you to think outside the box.
he grades really hard will take off all points for one wrong word in the whole right answer. not helpful,i mean we go to school to learn if we knew everything we wouldnt be there. midterm was REALLY hard. easy to fail. he fails alot of people. he's not friendly or helpful. class is 2 hours and boring powerpoint. maxiprojects are just busywork
Easily the worst professor I have taken at Davis. About 150 slides/lecture, and he rambles through them, for two hours. Grade is based on four quizzes (but he ended up giving us only one), one midterm, one final, and a maxiproject. He, his class schedule, and his website are all extremely unorganized. Avoid or prepare for the headache of your life.
Good lecturer for a difficult topic. Very practical lectures. Make sure to attend every lecture because we get no textbook, but he does put up online homework and powerpoints as resources. Do the homework before exams! It is useful. The review sessions are helpful as well. I only got a B, but I learned a LOT and I thought it was a great class.
Baldwin must be Michael Phelp's brother because he can talk for 2 hours without taking a breath. The subject matter is uninteresting and the pace is way too fast. It is all too easy to fall behind.
I don't think he knows the difference between lecturing and talking. I go to his lecture and listen to podcast and yet I still have no idea what the **** he's talking about. THE MOST FUCKED UP THING IS THAT he's the only one who's teaching this class and THERE ARE NO MORE FUCKING MCB 124 IN WINTER OR SPRING THIS YEAR. SO, I AM SCREWED!
He is the WORST teacher I have taken at UCD. I used to love studying molecules and that's why I major in biochem&MCB. He made me hate MCB now. Lecture very badly and he talked very unclearly. Podcast not helpful at all. His exam questions are hard, had no clue. Really bad teacher. But we got no choice except taking him. Be ready!
Beware, the review below my review is made by either the teacher's pet, TA or the professor himself. This class will make you want to kill yourself. Luckily, I kept myself busy so, I didn't commit suicide.
HE IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORSE PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD ALL MY LIFE!!! Each lecture are 100+ lecture slides and he talks WAY too fast to comprehend. tests are impossible to be done.. I don even kno if i can do well with notes open!! But we had no choice...
You probably will end up with a C if you don't have his past exams. Take him after you apply for med school, because C=F in med school. Or ask for his past exams from your frat/other group member friend.Basically, he copies his old exams.
I listened his podcasts over and over again, but it didnt help. He wants you to think 'out of the box'.I ended up with a B, but i feel i deserve more. He also gets irritated when you ask him questions during the test. He actually spends about 10-15 minutes during the test explaining about his wording. I recommend not taking him.
he's arrogant! He made us read his research articles. Last year, he brought a question from his paper. He thinks his research is the best thing in the world. I on the other hand think that his research is a piece of cake....Basically, mcb124 = enoch baldwins past reasearch articles
Unfortunately, all these comments are true. Enoch's a nice guy but he has very little patience when it comes to his material. He does not explain things well and expects students to immediately understand phD level ideas. The class was a waste of time and money. My advice: study your brains out, memorize all the slides and learn to think critically
He does not explain well. His tests are difficult.
His method of teaching is basically reading off his pp slides and expecting you to understand everything by the end of lecture. Doing the homework questions is mandatory to understand the material. He uploads practice exams w/o a key rendering them hardly useful for studying. Review sessions are less of review and more of q&a. Avoid at all costs.
Make sure your course load is not hard whenever you're taking his class. He does not explain things well. And he doesn't even go over everything he expects you to know in-n-out; it just appears on the homework, and you better know it for the tests. Oh, and he yells at students in his office hours - be careful. The class is doable, though.
Seems like a nice guy, but honestly a horrible teacher. He is very confusing, and expects his students to understand all his ideas just from his power point slides. He is a good example of a professor who should really just stick to research, and not to teaching.
I don't know why Dr. Baldwin has such low reviews. He really cares about his students. He doesn't judge students based on grades. He is a very intelligent man and sees things from other people's perspectives. In lab, he allows students to ask questions but also to explore things on their own which I think is very important.
Possibly the most difficult undergrad MCB class at UC Davis. Though not impossible, be prepared to dedicate a great deal of time to this class. Go to his office hours and make yourself known to him. The reading material he posts often times clarifies the confusion, the rest is what google search is for.
Don't load up on classes if you're gonna take 124. Like most classes your grade is based on how much time you spend studying - this class requires an inordinate amount of study time + learn the material don't memorize it, he likes to integrate concepts into problems if you know what I mean
Most likely the most difficult professor I have encountered. Nice and helpful professor actually, but the test is so hard! Be ready to spend A LOT of time to study this class:(
Prof. Baldwin is quite dedicated and I recommend his class. Yes, the tests are hard and the ppts a big bore, yet you learn BIOCHEM, not meant to be easy. Long review seshs, willing to help, tests reflect prep material. Using his work as ex's is not gloating and he's pretty good at what he does; multiple cites for all papers. super intelligent.
I think some people over-exaggerate the difficulty of this class...the exam averages were higher than OChem, for example. And he curves like all profs. My major complaint is that it's extremely hard to stay focused for 2 hours on his Powerpoints. You must summon all your mental stamina for this class. But overall I did not find it too unreasonable.
Interesting topics covered and class has potential to be great. Lectures are long and just flying through many slides. Apparently he doesnt mind if u learn from past exams and that it results in a high average. Sucks for those that can't get previous exams or choose not to pay to get one online.
I was really afraid to take this class and hated it while I was taking it. he doesn't kid when he says will trick you on exams because he really will. the final was very difficult. I recommend studying for his class everyday for few hours and old exams really help in understanding how he writes his questions and what he expects you to know.
This is a hard class. You absolutely must have old exams to do well.
Not sure what the fuss is about... Baldwin was pretty good compared to other professors who can't teach. Interesting material, pretty easy if you have old exams. I missed about half the classes, studied off slides and old exams, and B+, hahahaha
No textbook, pictures on powerpoints have no written explanation, he talks like we're grad students and expects us to have knowledge from classes that some have not taken (pchem, mcb 120L), extremely difficult tests, cannot do well unless you have practice exam keys. information is not intuitive. hardest biochem class so far.
Class has no Textbook, just lectures and slides with no words on them. Extremely hard tests final. lectures for 2 hours nonstop. To do well, highly suggest you understand all concepts, podcast each lecture multiple times and do many past exams to get a feel for his style. The class was very interesting however and he's super intelligent
This guy tough and expect to work hard. Barely got a B- and was hardest class i've ever taken.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you're a biochemistry major. This class was really hard. I had to study 100 hours a week for this class and I barely got an "A" in this class (I got a F on the final uncurved, but his curve brought me to an A). His lectures notes are DISORGANIZED. I got an A in the course but I didn't learn anything.
Dude is genius af but understanding him is impossible. He assumes you know all the basics. pchem and mcb121 are a must if you take this class. First midterm was 30% a repeat of BIS 102. If you liked that class, you'll like this class. Personally, I love the class, but hate its presentation
PROF USES TO MANY RUN ON SENTENCES AND IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW. LISTENING TO HIS PODCAST, ONE OF HIS 'SENTENCES' is 5 MINUTES LONG. TAKE A BREATH FOR GODS SAKE
What was he even trying to teach us? Class makes me want to run away from anything having to do with protein structure. Got an A on the midterm but learned absolutely nothing. Very DISORGANIZED! Sucks he's the only prof. for this course.
I actually really liked this class. Hardest class I've ever taken but it's not as bad as everyone says. He doesn't give out answers, but he'll ask for your logic and tell you if you're right. If you're not, he'll give you hints that lead you to the answer. Not a lot of kids like that. Probably why he has such low ratings. I recommend this class.
Tbh I loved this class. Guaranteed the most interesting class of the entire biochemistry major. Nothing even comes close to as interesting. Thank you Baldwin for correcting the misconceptions I had about science. I really enjoyed the class even though a lot of the time it was a pain in the ass. Just do your work, dont fall behind and youll do great
Honestly, I really loved this class. The material is super interesting, and I learned A LOT. He refuses to give out answer keys which makes it difficult to figure out your mistakes. He expects people to understand the first time he explains it which is just unrealistic and his abrasive personality makes him somewhat unapproachable. STUDY HARD
Had a pleasant class. Professor was helpful in clarifying difficult topics. Although very hard tests. I learned a lot.
Hardest class I've taken but rewarding if you learned a lot or earned the grade you want. Can be abrasive but tries to be fair. Looks towards the success of his students. Go to every office hour with questions. Ask if certain topics will be on exams, some won't be. Midterm 1 is easiest, final is long but about same difficulty as Midterm 2.
Definitely not the worst professor, in fact a pretty nice choice. If you take this professor, make sure you go into the class expecting to be challenged. Goes VERY fast, so make sure you podcast. He is very devoted to his research, BUT he definitely wants the best for students. Ask questions and probe his mind for exam hints.
Baldwin is the type of professor who blows through powerpoints while lecturing as fast as he can talk. The class would've been ok if he slowed down a bit (or maybe took a breath once in a while). The lecture slides can be non-descriptive so hearing him is a must. He uploads podcasts, but the audio quality sucks so you have to go to class.
The class was definitely very challenging but it felt like he could've made it much harder. 75% of the material is pretty interesting, but lectures can still be dry. Make sure you listen to podcasts and try to catch every concept he talks about. His tests are long, so he tests you on every single concept. Go to office hours or your TA office hours.
Honestly it takes talent to make interesting materials so boring to a point where no one wants to ask any questions. In addition to that, it certainly is an irony where a chemist who can barely operate basic technology such as using Canvas or a projector. Absolutely disorganized in EVERY possible way. Arrogant as well.
He doesnt know how to teach at all. Never able to make things clear. Tough exams, not enough time at all. One of the worst prof at Davis. Avoid at all cost!!!
Never take his class he doesn't teach well enough to explain the material thoroughly. His test are ridiculously long and are not clear most of the time, he doesn't provide a study guide either. The problems he does provide however, are kind of useless except for the initial part of the class which is just calculation. DONT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Avoid him at all costs. Only reads off the lectures and doesn't explain anything. Also goes very fast and doesn't speak clearly so you can barely understand what he is saying. Horrible professor
Baldwin is a decent professor but having him over the summer was definitely tough. He covers a lot of material in 102 so when that material is crammed into 6 weeks, it's hard to remember or even comprehend certain things. He is very good at explaining topics, but not always at explaining what he wants. He curves awesomely though! Plus EC!
He does a good job of explaining general concepts and the homework questions are similar to midterms. Tests & quizzes were long but lots of extra credit & easy points throughout quarter. Youll do well if you listen in class and do the homework
If I had to choose the worst class I've taken at UCD, it would be this class. This was one of the hardest classes I took as an undergrad. His exams were extremely difficult and the averages were so low. Because they were so low, he changed the grading to pass students.
Ended up doing well in the class, idk how that happened. He tests you on your ability to use limited or not so perfect data/info to co come up with reasonable explanation of what is happening. His exams are everything, but straightforward. However, if you understands the overall concept of the class, you will be ok (don't overthink though )
3-5 ppl group project p chill, graded on effort. lecture HEAVY but take time to go over slides and RECORD lectures helps a ton! not super hard class if you review the material he went over. there are practice exams on coursehero utilize them to understand how he tests. went to OH for final prac and super helpful! EC given thru vocab terms! STUDY!!!
Talks fast, a lot of material is covered each class. Tests are long and difficult, HIGHLY recommend getting his past exams through someone or the internet to study. Questions Are long, complex, and get confusing. Hes very smart, but acts as if we are already biochemists with experience and knowledge. Hardest class Ive taken at Davis.
Class isn't required, but strongly recommended because he explains concepts really well. Go to his office hours and ask about the practice exams because they perfectly reflect everything that is on the exams. He gives so much extra credit and is extremely open to questions. His lectures set a solid foundation for the future biochem classes.
Baldwin is an okay choice for summer BIS 102 but he does rush a lot towards the end. Every quiz and exam has extra credit to help boost your grade, but the practice questions have no keys! So to do well, GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He's extremely approachable and will give you the answers to the practice if you phrase your questions correctly.
He talks so fast that even if you record, it will take you 4+ hours to make it through the lecture understanding only 25% of the lecture. Only mentions things once and never repeats a concept more than once. Leaves out very important information and doesn't even explain majority of the concepts you need for the homework.
Enoch is a nice guy and is very knowledgeable about the subject. However I feel like he is out of touch with the difficulty of the course. He breezes through material and mumbles in lecture so podcasts are hard to follow. I would say that although the material is difficult he makes his tests pretty fair. Definitely not a class you want to cram for.
It's a tough course, but it's meant to be because biochem isn't easy. Ask him to turn the mic volume up. Re-listen with lecture capture and ask questions in class. He is interested in helping you understand! It's application-heavy so be prepared to go to office hours with questions. It can be overwhelming in the beginning, but I believe in you.
He doesn't explain things clearly and doesn't use tools like ice tables. Totally disconnected from today's students. He puts hard problems in lecture to explain lots of concepts but it just confuses everyone. Way too hard of a teacher for non-science majors. Avoid him if possible.
Horrible! This is a quote from him to students: "I am getting a lot of requests for an answer key for the midterm sample questions. In short I will not provide them." He doesn't help or realize how complicated this is to non-bio majors. This is was over summer where there is no tutoring, guess I'm struggling all summer. Avoid! Test Heavy! NO EC!
In short, he sucks. I am not a BIS major but am a stem major and he just whizzes through things. It is almost like he is rambling on tangents but you actually need to know tangents. There is no organization and he goes wayyyy too fast. Doesn't explain things and just skims over things that are important. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
He is a solid choice for those who have taken introductory chem (ochem is a pre req anyway). He does a great job explaining concepts in his lecture and slides and outlines exactly what to expect in exams. His practice exam is very similar to the real one, hence the lack of an answer key - but the answers can be got in office hours and from slides!
Kinda dry... He has problems with the exams that he never goes through in class. There were so many times I had no idea what he was talking about or what he meant. The whole class struggle with some students getting a 5 out of 30 on the exams. Didn't learn much or enjoy the class. Skip him if possible.
Taking this class during the summer . I thought it was going to be a smooth class. However, the class is really heavy in material. Half of the time I dont know what he is talking about because he goes in circles about the material. Office hours are nice because he goes over the answers for the study guide which is like the midterm.
Biochem is tough, but Professor Baldwin does his best to set students up for success. He is communicative and provides extra study materials, handouts, and website links. He does not hand out answers, but he is happy to explain problems and help you reason through them (which helps you do better on tests). Hard work is required, but great class!
Soo hard omg! I have no idea what he's talking about half the time. Avoid!
We had new material till the day before the final had no time to study. Would not take again. Some problems on exams are not gone over in class. He also skips lots of math steps in problem explaining.
Spends too long explaining concepts and somehow makes them more confusing than they actually are. Enoch sometimes messes up doing practice questions or derivations during lecture, wasting lots of time. He also tests you on information he never mentions during lecture and only explains during office hours for a total of 30 seconds.
Took Baldwin for BIS102 summer session and it was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. He goes through lectures very fast, to the point where I would have to go back multiple times to understand what he is saying. His practice tests are similar to practice exams but I still found them challenging. Lectures are not concise and too dense.
Enoch was a solid choice. Took him over summer session 1 and I must say that he was a gem of a person. Really understanding and empathetic to our situation. Had a generous curve at the end too - 84% was a comfortable A. His exams are identical to his practise exams and the concepts can be learnt thoroughly well from his lectures.
7 quizzes, 2 Midterms, 1 Final, 1 group project. Lectures are very long and dry, fails to explain what is needed to help with some of practice problems (solutions given). Provides practice exams but NO SOLUTIONS given! :( Midterms feel very rushed for time, quizzes are ok, group project is stressful but if completed 100% is given. difficult class
There's many ups and downs with him because has awfully difficult exams. If you are intimidated by putting in A LOT of hard work, there's easier profs out there. BUT if you really want to grow and are ready to work for it, Dr Baldwin is one of the few good professors I've had. Incredibly accessible, given great advice beyond the class.
Extremely difficult course that I took in SS1. Not worth, professor just lectures and moves on really quickly. I wouldn't recommend taking this professor ever, or this course in ss1/ss2.
don't take this class during summer. you get no time to study and he lecture are so long with meanless inform for non chem majors. TA are the save grace for my current grades right now. He a nice guys but he just a horrible teacher for bis 102 don't take at all
I think the correct word to describe this professor is quirky. Yes this class was hard what do you expect when your taking an upper division STEM class. As long as you attend lecture and try and make it office hours you'll be fine. Dr.Baldwin is very accessible and willing to help, you just need to ask. A tip though is DO HIS PRACTICE TESTS
He's an ancient professor. 2 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 Final, and some extra credit. Has dense lectures and at times covers unnecessary concepts. Concepts/problems are learned from TA's rather than from him. Practice exams are somewhat similiar to actual. Expects a lot from students and makes you work for it. Has a curve by clustering z scores.
Baldwin is cutthroat. His lectures are dense and your grade is based on 2 exams, 2 quizzes, and 1 final. Practice exams are 80% similar to the actual exam, but he doesn't give you any answers for them. The LA carried the class, while the TA and Prof. failed to go over some concepts. He's tough but you're able to pass with weekend studying. :))))
Clusters z scores at the end so you're left in the dark about what your final grade will be but he posts scores on his website with codes for each student. Dense lectures with 2 exams, 2 quizzes, and 1 final (can be brutal during summer). Has practice but you have to go to OH to understand how to get answers, nice guy but not the best prof
This is really a nice and responsible professor. The exam is a little hard but has a good curve at the end of the quarter. You can really learn something from his lectures. He is really nice, and you can even ask about grad school programs and he will give you a lot of useful suggestions.
BIS 102 was pretty easy. took it summer session and it went by really fast. He grades the class on a scale so you are competing with your peers though
had him for my large 10hr lab class and he made the challenging class more durable. He was very supportive of us and truly wanted us to succeed in the course. He can be difficult and can confuse me when explaining problems but there are other resources to understand that material. overall very enjoyable in a class I thought would be challenging
The class wasn't great in the beginning. Got better towards the end. It was his first time teaching MCB 120, so I forgive him. But he's definitely a hard prof, so get ready to work. Harder than Nasiri by factor of 100 imho
Avoid at all costs. Not worth it
Took him during SS2. There is a decent amount of content given the short timeframe, but it's doable. If you go to office hours, ask questions, and do the practice exams you'll do just fine. two quizzes, two midterms, one final. If you stay on top of your studies, you'll have no problems passing
took during ss2; provides a lot of helpful study resources for tests, however rambles on a bit in lec! his slides can be a little haphazardly organized but overall help a lot and prepare you well. most of all a super caring guy! always wants to do right by students and is willing to talk over grades w you, decent prof!
Dr. Baldwin is such a nice person! He cares about his students; however, I wish his lectures were more specific to his learning objectives. He often would "over lecture" where he went beyond the scope of what we needed to know for the exam. I would have preferred that this time was utilized for practice questions or other things to help us learn.
Professor Baldwin seems intimidating, but he's genuinely there to help you learn the material and be prepared for a biochemistry lab or science lab in general. I gained a lot of respect for him when I emailed him that I wasn't doing well mentally and he came to me during lab and said "I'm really glad you're here, let me know if you need anything".
Really fun material + lab work. Telegraphs pretty clearly what he's expecting you to do on practicals/exams. Exams are dense, but if you know what you've been doing on the postlabs they're straightforward. Grades are only based on the three exams, two practicals, and postlabs, so it's easy to tank your whole class grade if you beef one of them.
Lectures have lots of information that you don't need to know and it's not always clear what exactly is the relevant stuff. Midterms+quizzes are mostly similar to practice exams with some curveballs, but final was NOT similar to practice final and most people didn't have enough time to finish. Exam questions are obtuse and can be hard to understand
During ss1,gave reasonable time to finish exams. most exam questions are from practice quiz & canvas quiz. wording can be a bit confusing. overall not too difficult and not conceptually hard. pay attention to concepts and enzyme activity graph equations. memorize amino acids to get a head start! no notes on exam besides final (8.5x11" front & back)
He is just the GOAT. I guess his lecture style could be improved, but he is the nicest pookie wookie and he grades VERY fairly. So those who are rating 1/5 are just salty that they got low grade. He is my Jesus and I became religious because of him and I pray everyday. This sounds like a joke but I am serious.
