Great teacher! I highly recommend him for Calc II
Very good.
good prof, very Irish :)
Eoin, was easily the best mathematics prof I have ever had at the U in 8 years and 6 math classes. Exceedingly clear lectures, notes, a pleasant & direct personality and unparalleled availability all lead me to rate him highly. It is a shame they do not allow him to teach higher than Calculus II! Why don't they let him teach higher math?
Terrible Useless. Dropped class. He has his own way of doing things and it's like he can't communicate that way with the rest of the world. Never take 2-3 hours classes with him. Ever.
Anyone who says Eoin is a bad teacher clearly didnt put forth any effort. He is an awesome teacher who generally cares about the well-being of his students. He is the best math TA i have ever had and I will get the best math grade ever because of him!
Eoin is one of the best math teachers I have ever had in my life. I just finished Calc 1 with him, and am lucky enough to have him again next semester for Calc 2. He explains things perfectly, and always stops and backtracks if people are not understanding. Hilarious too & he doesn't even mean to be. This guy is great; truly cares about us students
I couldn't tell you how helpful this guy will be for your understanding of calculus. He knows his work inside and out and is willing to do anything for his students if they are willing to work with him. Loved him and couldn't recommend him strongly enough. Take night class with him and you'll get an A or a B guaranteed.
This was one of the best professors I've ever had! He goes the extra mile to explain things in new ways. He's patient and eager to help. He's excited about what he's teaching which keeps students interested. He's great at his job and I can't recommend him enough! I enjoyed his teaching in 1271 so much that I took his section of 1272 also.
Explains things much BETTER than the book. He gives you the same theorems that are in the book, but in a much clearer manner for your notes. He provides very useful examples, and lets you use any of his section's office hours. He really cares that the class understands and follows him during lecture. Moves quickly through lecture.
Great teacher. Has a real knack for teaching and not just the subject material. He is a very very gifted educator.
He really tries to check with the class to make sure they understand the material and explains it very well.
Eoin is probably the best instructor I have ever had. He explained the subject matter better than my professor and in less time. He definitely cared about his students--he would come over and look at every student's classwork and never had trouble dispelling confusion. He made calculus easy. He is also very personable. I highly recommend him.
An amazing math professor. I went into his office hours almost every week because he was able to explain everything very clearly and sincerely cared about your success. If you are able to take him, TAKE HIM! Going to his office hours also raises your grade.
After failing the first midterm I thought I might die in this class. And I would have if it wasnt for him. I began going to office hours where he not only helped me on homework problems but also gave me studying tips. OHara is a lifesaver.
He is a very straightforward professor who really helps the students succeed.
At the beginning of the semester, this class sucked for me. When I started going to office hours and asking more questions I began to understant it. O'Hara is an awesome professor, he is very helpful and explains things in a straight forward manner. He also actually cares about students understanding the material. Hard class, but great teacher.
I had Ohara as a workshop TA and he made everything so clear that going to lecture wasn't necessary. I definitely recommend him.
One of the best math professors I have ever had. He explains everything so well. The only complaint is that because he explains everything on his slides, he tends to go over the class hour and rush through the last two slide. Take Ohara if he is available because you will learn a lot! He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
Very clear (also speaks English!) in communicating tough subjects. Going into office hours was also helpful where he would even make up random examples to help you along! It's also clear he loves math so the enthusiasm and friendliness is nice.
Very enthusiastic about math and makes topics easy to understand. Definitely need to study tho. Topics move fast and tests are tough.
Great Math Professor! He loves math and was a really good teacher overall. Be prepared to work hard, but he will help you out if you need extra help. He was extremely nice the whole semester and it made me look forward to every Calc II discussion with him.
Awesome dude! Clear lectures! Easy to understand.
Eoin is by far the best professor I've had for math. He is extremely organized and has awesome color-coded notes that help you understand the material. The outlines of the notes are posted before class. This allows you to have adequate time to record his lecture examples. Awesome in office hours. Tests are tough but if you work hard youll be fine.
Professor O'Hara is awesome! His lectures are very good and it's easy to follow. You will most likely get a lot of homework and worksheets but that is just to understand the material better. He is a tough grader (for example, he's strict on notation whether it's about limits or Reimann sums) but that is just a reminder to make sure to include them.
O'Hara is really easy to understand and very straightfoward in his class. What matters most is the TAs.
O'Hara was very straightforward and easy to understand professor. He sometimes was a strict grader and lecture notes weren't always posted in full but overall he was easygoing and a very casual person so it was easy to approach him to talk or ask for assistance with the class.
Professor O'hara is great. He is super nice and helpful in office hours (which I would recommend going to). I like how he truly cares about his student's success as he is very approachable and can ask about anything. His lectures are sometimes a little slow but they are very detailed.
Good professor, far better than some of the other Calc 1/2 professors at the U. Lectures feel very compact. Fairly harsh grader on midterms and final, which make up 78% of the grade. Good lecturer, but didn't follow through on promises for curves.
Prof Ohara was an ok prof for my first year of calc. He moves pretty fast, but can also go step by step through problems. No major complaints. I would take him again.
Exams are similar to the lecture problems, as long as you show up to class and understand the problems he goes over, you'll get a good grade in his class.
He is a good lecturer. I would take him again. He recorded the lectures beforehand. However, he does this annoying thing where he would add one more problem or re-explain one or any extra material, at the end of the class without recording the zoom meeting so we can go back and review this extra material again.
He's the best math professor I've ever had - caring, gives clear explanations, is very patient, and provides many resources for students, especially for exams. The exams aren't too difficult and reflect well on the topics learned; as long as you pay attention in class and rewatch lectures, you'll do great in the class and on tests.
The class is alright, tough but do-able. The attendance polls are based on accuracy, which drags your grade way down when you don't understand the content before it was taught. Going back to pure attendance polls would be a much better idea.
Great teacher and helpful during office hours.
Class is hell but this man is a legend
This class is very challenging at some points but O'Hara tries to make it bearable. He is extremely helpful and patient and will explain your questions in detail if you go to his office hours. The course being extremely test heavy is a problem but he gives you multiple practice exams to help you through it. He's just a goat idk what else to say.
I never understood the hype for Eoin. He always went way too fast in lectures, compared to Jennie, who took feedback and slowed down her online lectures and made them more accessible. I thought Jennie was better overall.
Ohara would constantly not finish lectures in time, leaving us to figure out how to solve the problems in our homework without being taught the material. He also didn't really explain the material that well, lectures were too fast to comprehend it all. I would not recommend him.
He often didn't finish going through his slides on time and also never went in-depth when explaining what he was doing. The class was also heavily weighted on the midterms so definitely study for those. Most of what you're going to learn will really depend on your TA/peers since that's how I learned most of the concepts. The lecture didn't do much.
Why his rating is so high I don't understand. WAY to fast in lectures and the homework is painful. Half of the homework is graded like the test, which they do to help you understand how the test will be graded. However this means in order to get credit for the homework you have to be right and do it the specific way they want. Painful.
Eoin OHara is a pretty good math lecturer. Throughout the semester he teaches you very good ways in which to remember certain procedures. The midterm exams that are given throughout the semester can be quite challenging, but if you utilize office hours and homework examples, they are manageable. Overall a pretty solid experience.
I can genuinely say that this class was the most difficult class I have ever taken. I've never had a knack for math but this guy just genuinely taught the class poorly. He was fair and honest with the grade lines but there is barely any curve. I studied so hard for this class, more than any other, and still got a mediocre grade in the end.
He's a good lecturer, though makes a minor mistake here and there and sometimes goes a little too fast, but his lectures and workshop are comprehensive. Paper homework is graded harshly along with his exams. There is little to no curve and won't even let you see your final exam or the "curve" at the end of the semester.
The lectures and homework are pretty accurate for what you should expect on the tests. The homework's are graded hard, and tests make up around 75% of your grade. Homework can get to be a lot with weekly homework's and webworks due, but overall if you manage your time it is not hard to get a decent grade in the class.
Without a doubt the best lecturer I have ever had, his notes are amazing, and he posts them after each class, so if you want to you can just skip lectures. In addition, he gives amazing resources for tests (3 practice tests with answer keys), and is very responsive over email. The class is not easy, but he does all he can to help you pass.
O'Hara often sped through topics during lecture so fast that I was barely able to keep up with him. Every week there was sets of often 20 online problems for homework online that in most cases were on topics never covered during lecture. There was also weekly paper homework also for grade that was actually on topics covered in class
I've taken this professor for both 1371, and 1372, and have enjoyed the way he presents the material. Outside of lecture, there are plenty of resources offered within the course to allow you to study for exams.
I took O'Hara for 1371 and 1372 and he by far has been my most favorite professor out there. He is caring and explains things in a way that I understood very well. His slides are amazing and overall I would take this class again in a heartbeat he made it that fun. Tests are hard but it is a calc class so that is expected.
He is a very good person, but the class is a struggle coming in as a freshman without having experience of a difficult class with such a heavy workload.
O'Hara is honestly the best, he truly wants you to learn and is always willing to help if you reach out. He will provide accurate examples of what the homework and exams are like. Lectures are definitely mandatory if you want to pass. He can go through slides sort of fast but he always posts completed ones after the lecture.
He is an ok professor, if you have never taken calculus before I would definitely just take pre-calc before because this class is so hard with no basic knowledge of calc. He speeds through everything and basically told 2 people in my group they should drop the class early bc they def. would not pass. Read the textbook and always go to lectures.
I really liked Eoin as a person and was my favorite lecturer this sem. Lecture slides were super organized but the class was very fast paced. Between workshop and reviews, there are multiple resources to study for exams. Attend office hours if you are struggling or have questions, this course was very difficult even after taken calc in high school.
Exams were ruthless and were graded by careless arithmetic and algebraic mistakes. Homework was due at weird times and due twice a week. The problems in lecture and discussions were not even half as hard as the exams. If you can, take MATH1271 instead.
Lectures are not mandatory and completed notes are available by the end of the week. Discussion are mandatory and helpful with lots of practice problems and hints on tests subjects given. Professor O'Hara is an interesting lecturer and is helpful when the need arises by all accounts.
- Exams were challenging because of many medium-difficulty questions. This is more 1371-specific than professor-specific. - Great online notes that made learning easy, and simplified exam review. - His notes replace the textbook, I did not open the textbook at all. - Class is super exam heavy and you need 93-93.5%+ to get A. Do lots of prep.
He just goes over notes during lecture. He always runs out of time to go over all the notes, some days you will need to finish the rest of the notes. Discussion is where you're able to practice the material with peers. The class itself isn't too bad, but it is easy to fall behind if you're not caught up. He can be intimidating during office hours.
When going to office hours he would sometimes be intimidating and would expect us to fully understand course material instantly. It wasn't very calming going to his office hours. During lecture he teaches a lot of the course content there, but towards the end of lecture he would run out of time! He never posts his completed lecture notes either.
While Professor O'Hara's lectures do run fast, the examples he covers are relevant to the homework and exams. Whatever he doesn't cover is discussed by the TA in the recitation days. Don't be afraid to attend his office hours, I was able to understand the concepts better and get homework help whenever I saw him.
Mr. O'Hara's calc 1 and 2 were top notch classes. Difficult sometimes, yes, but the structure of the class and the way he presents information is very helpful.
Having an Ipad or Computer that you can take written notes on is really helpful in this class as he posts his lectures slide on canvas for you to download and take notes on. Overall a good teacher. Test may seem daunting but he does a good job preparing you for them.
His lectures are very good and helpful especially if you can take written notes online with a tablet as he posts the lecture slides on canvas. Course can be difficult but the two homework assignments as well as the discussion worksheets can help a lot with studying for tests. Also chose him again for MATH 1372 because I enjoyed his teaching
Lectures were okay. Eoin would try to get through all of the lecture notes for the day but once ran out time, would speed through them and was difficult to follow through. Homework was graded strictly and exams were fine as long as you put in the effort to study and do the homework. His teaching style didn't really fit me but may fit others.
There was a lot of homework, but Ohara was great at lectures which made it pretty easy.
Amazing Professor, probably the best I've ever had in any given subject. Lectures were very clear, he explains things well, and if you had questions regarding anything (grade, attendance, expectations, material) he was very helpful in answering them. Before each exam, he shared several basic but helpful expectations for what was going to be tested.
Eoin O'Hara is a good lecturer, everything is clear. His good teacher qualities end there. He is very uncaring. If you have extenuating circumstances or a health emergency, he will not care. He will ignore all communications regarding emergencies. He is definitely a 'I don't care if you're dying, you must come to the midterm", type of guy.
He's really fun in lecture in my opinion. It's important to get all of the easier points, like doing all of your homework. Get those free points where you can because the tests are graded really hard.
Great Professor, Lectures are mandatory but are helpful. Would recommend an iPad because the lectures move quite quickly. Tests and Final make up a huge portion of the grade, so study up. Accessible through Office Hours which are very helpful
O'Hara's lectures are great. He explains topics clearly and gives great answers if you need help. Exams are pretty tough, but if you know the material then you will do fine. There are two homework assignments per week, but they can take a while so you should start them early. I chose him again for MATH1372 because I enjoyed his class so much.
O'hara is able to get concepts across well in class which is supported by his use of guided notes. Answers to problems in the notes and discussions are readily available and make for great practice for the exams. There are plenty of office hours, so any questions can be answered quite easily.
Written homework is graded harshly. Lecture notes are posted online. Great professor, very knowledgeable on the subject and you can tell he cares. Very nice too, easy to schedule a makeup test or get an extension (within reason). Happily answers questions/explains things. Would recommend.
Between homework and discussions, expectations are very clear. I took both 1371 and 1372 and felt work the required was reasonable. Make sure you stay on top of your work and do a little everyday.
Lectures were extremely fast-paced, but the guided notes helped (an iPad or tablet is almost a must-have for lectures and homework). Homework is lengthy, but manageable. It is often formatted for Morgan's lectures, so you may have to go digging in her lectures notes for the "correct format." Exams cover a huge swath of topics: can make it difficult
Hes Great!
Great Teacher
He's a really good professor, but he goes so fast but slow. To be more specific, he goes through topics really quickly, but because he has so many lecture slides, he doesn't go through all of them, so you miss out on a lot of information. If you've never taken calc before like me, the class will be difficult but you can still do good
A great professor and enjoyable lectures! Obvious that he cares and explains very well. The only thing is sometimes he goes super slow to explain something (which is amazing but easy to stop paying attention), and sometimes goes super fast and super difficult to keep up (copying notes but not comprehending material). Wants to see students succeed.
He is a good person overall
He's probably the best CSE lecturer, but a real stickler when it comes to attendance & grading. Never finishes all of the slides. Assigns things over breaks. Took attendance w/ 8" of snow, buses not operating, & sent the zoom link 5min before lecture (after I slipped & fell while walking to his class). Wouldn't take him if there were better options
Took the fall semester of freshman year without any precalc classes. The class was difficult for me, but it was manageable. Interesting and engaging lectures, O'Hara was also very kind outside of class. An online worksheet, along with a physical 4-8 page worksheet, every week. Be warned that the "curve" is really only 2-3%, switch to CLA for 15-20%
Great professor, we did have chimeins but attendance was not mandatory. I would recommend him but he goes through lecture VERY fast sometimes.
Prof. O'Hara gave some of the most clear and digestible calculus lectures I've ever sat through. He's quirky and gives off some passive-aggressive vibes, but overall, a great professor.
Take him if you're taking Calc
Great professor for Calc 1. Lectures are great and notes are clear and easy to understand. Class moves fast but is very manageable. Had a good experience taking this class with him, I'd highly recommend it.
Doesn't usually finish lecture, and last five minutes goes at max speed. Gives great notes though. Do every single bit of HW and discussion and you easily can get an A. I also went to Walter for tutoring when something didn't make sense. Tests move very quickly, so be able to do problems fast and correctly. No attendance, but go anyway.
My goat fr
I got a C due to bad study habits, but he is a great lecturer and his tests match very well to the content tested!!
He goes fast through the lecture material and often doesn't finish his lectures, but the completed slides are always posted after class. He explains things very clearly and makes it very clear what will be expected on tests. I would definitely recommend his class and will definitely be taking his calc 2 course now.
Took his class last fall and only have good things to say about him. Well structured slides. Easy to follow completed notes. I was kind of spoiled by having this professor early as from my experience and hearing from other people's experiences he is a lot better at teaching then most of the linear and multi professors.
Once again had him last year in the spring. Take Ohara for calc 1 and calc 2 you won't regret it.
