Dr. Fernandez is pretty amazing. He'll help you understand whatever you need to know. At SMU, he had only three tests and a 10-page literature review in APA style we had to write. Take him if you want to know more about health psychology-- he's one of the best in the field. It's a pretty practical course.
At SMU, I took Health Psychology under Dr. F. The course was extremely challenging, but the material was interesting, which made the hard work worth it. To this day (almost 3 years later), I can still recall the majority of the information I learned from his class. I was also a research assistant for Dr. F, and he was an amazing supervisor/mentor.
Hard to get a good grade in his class. Gives only 1 exam the whole semester & that's the final worth 35% of entire grade. Grades harshly. Seems like an unapproachable type. If another professor teaches clinical psy., it would be a good choice to avoid this one!
He is a great teacher...He is so smart! At times he can be intimidating to approach but he is very nice and funny when he's lecturing. He grades fairly and i have already learned so much from him and his class. I definitely recommend him. If you are looking for a slack off class. This is def not the course you should take
Dr. Fernandez has a knack for teaching college students. He is well versed and reasonable with grades. He appreciates any and all student feedback, and makes every attempt to make the class interesting yet informative. Dr. Fernandez comes from a school where professors of his caliber are the norm. He stands out in out psych dept. great prof!!!
Very compassionate and intelligent professor. Interesting course. 3 tests, 1 small paper, no final! :o)
I am a pre med student(biology) work in the hosptial for ~1 yr half and I have to say I am glad i took this class as a free elective. The stuff i learn actually related to the hospital setting(unlike many bio classes)and he made the info very relative and interesting. Tests do require you to think though. Great Topics Great Prof. Got an A btw
I was indecisive as to whether to complete my Psycology degree or not. I took this course as my first course after 4 years of not studying psychology at all and I was very inspired to continue my degree in this field. I highly recommend this course by this professor to anyone with an interest in the subject material. He made the class enjoyable.
Really knows the material and can communicate it really well. He can also make you laugh in the middle of the lecturing.
It's not like other psych class where you get loads of info. Here, you also get you to do practical projects related to theory. I learned a lot about what clinical psychologists do. He's supersmart and fair but don't ask for extra credit and all that.
I like the interaction in class, don't always know the answers but at least I get to talk instead of staring at power point. too much abnormal psych can make you feel abnormal but he's critical-thinking and doesn't make it like DSM or the textbook is 100% correct.
He's very enlightning. Just hope i do ok on his final exam.
I took him for clinical and he teaches a great class. Its all practical. But miss a project and its almost impossible to make it up no matter how legitamite your excuse is.
had him for clinical. great prof, really knows what he is talking about and is very articulate. the class isnt the easiest but it is very interesting. we need more profs like this at utsa. he will help you succeed if you really want to.
has a total of 8 assignments. Kept us in the dark about 4 of them. So to this day I still don't know how I did on what. He is ok.
The connection betwen the therapies and the theories was a bit hard to get, and it's a bit hard to cramm all that in one class. But, Dr. F made it the best class I took at UTSA even though I got a B and wanted an A.
Lectures required some note-taking but I liked the way he talks. Couldn't always get him during office hour and email is not tyhe same.
Dr. Fernandez' class on health psychology put me on the path to graduate school. Also I found that psychology has many treatments for health but it's hard work compared to drug treatment.
Smooth teaching style, though sometimes concepts a bit complex. Some sections like interviewing were easy but others like standard testing a bit difficult. The psychotherapy section was my favorite because it had lots of application.
Dr. Fernandez was very easy to understand. Made material extremely relevant and connected ideas throughout semester. Definitely take his class if you are at all interested in health psychology. As with any class, study, attend class regularly, pay attention, and ask questions and you will do well.
Dr. Fernandez was an honor to take his course. He Help me see things clearly in the field. His work clearly allow me to really understand Psychology in a health manner. Yet, alone anyone who attempts to take his course will be honored that they took his class. The fact everything he teaches in regards to health would useful of his information.
Love him - easy to follow, interesting, funny, and very smart. 3 tests, makes you buy his workbook and fill it out for points, which I was mad about but tests come directly from the workbook. Study and you will make an A. Takes off for attendance if you miss more than once, but you need to go to fill out the book. He's great tho, love him.
I took him for Intro to Clinical Psych. He is non-negotiable with grades and has students grade everything. Spent a lot of time on my term paper and I got a 50 on it, still don't know why. He is smart and at times funny but this class is way too hard. My only C at UTSA. Teaches it like a grad level class. I would recommend him just not for clin psy
The professor has high expectations because clinical psych is kinda competitive to get into for grad school. Got a B, but I guess it was fair. Did well on the term paper but couldn't keep up with the reading. Also, the stat project was a little unexpected in clinical, but once you did it, it made sense.
Only class where I got to learn about counseling and treatment of people with psych disorders. Very interesting but a little too many projects. He knows his stuff. TA checks but does not grade, from what I learned. He's quite fair.
Never missed a class. Wish I could have made a higher grade but I'm not a talker in class, and test-taking is not for me. Anyway, learned a few interesting ways to help people.
Intro Clinical has a smaller class than Experimental, but you're on the go from day 1. I can say that what I expected is what I got: interviewing, counseling, and pretty much a sample of what psychologists do in practice. But, seeing a patient would have been aven better than role playing. Dr. Fernandez did a lot to make it real and interesting.
Took him for Psych of Health. The BEST professor in this world! Only class I've ever turned my phone off in. Take good notes, go to class, enjoy! You will def. get an A if you put some effort into studying your notes and pay attention in class. He's extremely friendly as well.
Dr. Ephrem Fernandez has been one of the best professors I have ever had in my 3.5 years at UTSA. I am a psychology major, and though psychology majors are privileged by having good professors, Dr. Fernandez is really interested in the students, passionate about the topic, and an excellent professors.
Awesome!! Intro to Clinical...I wish I could take this class all day!!
Psych of Health was one class where I actually learned something I could use everyday. Professor Fernandez keeps you going with lots of the latest on diabetes, obesity, AIDS...Actually enjoyed taking notes, managed a B+, and even got the chance to participate in class.
Dr. Fernandez brings a unique and genuine personality to his lectures. Listening him speak is an enjoyable experience, making the material easier to absorb. This class will require you to study, but Dr. Fernandez is a fair man. You will not regret registering for a class with him. Everyone should be so lucky as to be taught by him.
Health Psyc was always informative and at times even mind-altering. Dr. EF has a way of passing on info about mind-body interaction while opening your consciousness to how it happens everyday life.
Intro Clinical was absolutely fantastic! Attendance is taken and a fairly good amount of discussion. Extremely interesting material, videos, articles, etc. By far the most interesting, memorable, and influential class I've taken at UTSA. If you haven't had Dr. Fernandez yet, do so before you graduate!!!
I loved his health pscyh class. Have to attend class to get all the information you need to put in your workbook (its turned in at the end of semester for a grade). Lots of information but gives real world examples making it easy to remember. Go to class, pay attention, theres no reason why you cant pass.
If you're seriously looking to be a practicing psychologistpsychiatrist, this is the class to take. Lots of role playing, psychotherapeutic information, and just general tips that you will use in the real world. He's definitely a tough grader and will call you out if you don't participate but it's a great class overall
Dr. Fernandez requires that you purchase his published workbook for $55 for Psychology of Health. You must attend class as he takes roll and gives credit for attendance. Lots of short assignments, lots of notes in workbook, 3 exams but not comprehensive. Material is easy understand and real world examples. Workbook due at end of semester, but had to work for it. I definitely recommend Dr. F.
Dr. Fernandez has a very unique way to lecture; he talks on a very calmed voice, still conveying a clear message. It was helpful when he referred to statistical graphs, data and videos to give real-life examples and also to stimulate participation in class. Important to take good notes as they are the primary source to study. I def recommend Dr. F
Health Psych class was interesting I did not notice time pass. Workbook is low cost and for lecture notes and short written assignments. 3 tests and some extra credit for research. Dr. EF makes class feel at ease but still not easy to speak up in a class this size, so i catch him after class. He's even more relaxed during office hours.
About 10 different health topics from diabetes to alcoholism. I just love the class demonstrations. Note-taking made easy with Workbook. We started a study group to prepare for the tests. The extra credit was helpful. Great style.
Amazing professor! Pay attention to his lectures because everything he says is important. I will take anything he teaches regardless of the subject, he makes everything interesting.
I highly recommend this course for anyone considering practicing psychology or just counseling in general. Course was enjoyable and gave me a very realistic and hands-on introduction on what to expect in the field. There is only one test at the end so you must read the book, but it is an easy read. The professor is knowledgeable and interesting.
Definitely one of my favorite professors at UTSA. He's not easy, but he makes classes so interesting and engaging that learning the material comes easy. He's strict on attendance because that's 98% of how you learn the material. He has a very dry sense of humor that makes any class super enjoyable. If you're really interested in psych, you want him
Really made me think and care about my own health, physical and mental. Better than anything I'd expected through my 4 years. I graduated but if there's one reason I want to go back to college, it's to take classes from professors like Dr. Fernandez.
Best teacher at UTSA! Take him for both health and clinical psychology! He actually makes everything interesting, he remembers everyone's name, any assignment has a purpose that is useful, not time consuming, and great sense of humor. I wish he could teach everything I have left. AWESOME!
The most interesting and informative class I've taken at UTSA. Dr. Fernandez is an excellent prof. His interactive demonstrations provided me with a better understanding of course material. The workbook is a great resource and definitely crucial to success in the course. It was a great experience learning from him. Wish I could take him again!!
He is one of the best I have ever taken. He gives great interactive lectures that are easy to understand and he makes your grade in class projects almost completely. These projects are better called practice work because it gives you a chance to apply what you are learning. If you are going into Counseling - TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM! (Spring 2016)
If you're looking to go into Clinical Psych, this is the class for you. I suggest you ONLY take this class if you're looking to go to grad school. This class was my favorite by far! It's not an easy A, but if you participate the assignments become enjoyable. His class is taught to be insightful & helpful for all those looking to do clinical work.
Professor Fernandez is hands down the best professor I have ever come across at UTSA. He truly loves what he does and that is reflected in the delivery of his lectures and his helpfullness outside of class. As with any good professor, you'll at least need to put in some effort to pass... but he makes it easy for you to want to :)
So nice, I had to take him twice. Honestly my favorite professor at the university. For this course you'll need to read before class, as this is an upper level course. But don't let let scare you away, he keeps his lectures interesting and worth your time.
Dr. Fernandez is a total gem to the Psychology Department. I came into the class due to aligning of my schedule, and left with a lot of respect for the professor and now have a research opportunity. Very nice, always thorough, and exams are straightforward. If there's a psychology professor to recommend from UTSA, it is Dr. Fernandez! Love him!!!!!
Hands down, the best class I have taken at UTSA! Are you sick and tired of death by PP? Dr. Fernandez is a fantastic lecturer who will teach you about the SKILLS clinical psychologists use with actual practice and role-plays. If youre prepared to do the work, take this class. Youll love it!
Dr. Fernandez made a topic I thought was going to be dead dry very exciting. No textbook! The workbook is amazing for note keeping and helps organise your studying. Extensive range of topics covered and the tests are easy if you just read the notes. The quality of the teaching was world-class!
Possibly the best teacher I ever had. Wish I could take another of his classes. Odd mixture of high intelligence combined with humour. Definitely will keep you motivated and interested.
Not an easy A-. Steady rate of information but with a lot of variety. Tests all came from Workbook and lectures. Fortunately, he gave bonus points. I would prefer if attendance and take home questions count some more and a few points for office hours and happy hour.
To be fair I know people that have taken him for other classes that weren't as hard, but for health I took it really would help to have a science background. It's not an easy A, he takes attendance, but gives an extra credit opportunity. He doesn't do study guides and the amount of material you need to know for each test is enormous.
In this class, I feel like it would of been easier to understand by having anatomy or biology as background knowledge. I love a challenging class, but it was too much biology/anatomy terminology. His class was hard to study for plus trying to keep up with other classes because his class, to me, needed the most attention. He only has exams too.
Professor Fernandez is an excellent teacher. First, he teaches from a workbook, which is much cheaper than a textbook. Also, the material he covers is VERY useful and applicable to your life or the lives of loved ones. The topics he covers are interesting, and he sheds light on a lot of misunderstood diseases. Make sure you take good notes, though.
If you are a psyh major and don't get in his Clinical Psych class than what were you doing at this school. He is the best teacher and you will learn a lot. If you are interested in a career in the psyh feild this class will give you a first taste of what you will be expected to do. One test is stats so brush up for that. Seriously he is amazing
Dr. EF's psych of health course is the best. The range of topics, engaging lectures, video clips, Q& A, kept my interest all the time. Never had to struggle to make it to this class. Workbook made it easy to take notes and learn for the three tests. Longer office hours would be better but he was always approachable after class.
Dr. Fernandez is one of the most respected, and experienced teachers at this university. If you have the opportunity to take ANY class from him, you better take it before it fills up. This guy actually cares about his students, and gives amazing lectures. Health psych is a really fun course, & I can't wait to take his clinical psych class.
Taking him for independent study is definitely a good choice. He picks very interesting topics for his research and distributes the work between 6-8 students in a way that doesn't make the workload overwhelming. He typically would like to have seen how you perform in one of his other courses before accepting you. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T MISS MEETINGS!!
Classes were too good to miss, office hours even better. if you can get a hold of him. he's easy to talk to. I was inspired.
for the first time I can say here is a class that made me healthier. It was not just facts but useful facts presented in an interesting way. Still got to work on my sleeping and eating and other habits but I keep his Workbook for future reference. As smart as he is, he always treated me like an equal. Good dude.
He's a nice guy and is very passionate and well-informed about what he's teaching. There is no textbook, but he did write his own notebook that you'll take notes in ($55), and there's a 1-2 paragraph paper per chapter (14 total). The tests are straight from the notes. Class can be boring sometimes but he does his best to keep it interesting.
This class was an elective for me, but it led to my decision to go into medicine. Also made me appreciate the strong psychology component in diseases and health. Thanks Dr. Fernandez for a wonderful semester
Very awesome lectures, highly recommend. There is a notebook that he wrote that he requires you to buy BUT in my opinion, very worth it! Not an inconvenience, makes studying what he wants to emphasize much easier. Has private research groups, happy to talk with you outside of class. Take him :)
Very interesting and relevant lectures. Uses workbook he wrote for his lectures helps keep everything streamlined, plus is cost effective. Takes attendance points. Tests directly from workbook/lecture. 1 page essay for all 14 chapters of workbook with 1 outside reference. Show up, do essays, study workbook for exams and you should do well.
Dr. Fernandez is an amazing professor. His lectures are amazing and very interesting. I was always very excited to go to his class because there was new information to learn all the time. From all the classes i have taken this by far has been my favorite. I enjoyed this class so much that i joined his research group. This class is not hard one bit
I have taken professor Fernandez for a year now in two classes and he's wonderful. He makes you put in work for your grade however I feel he is fair in what he does. I have grown to respect his teaching style and his class has true substance. I feel I learned more from him in a year than I learned my entire college career.
The class was very informative and I learned how intricately every system of the body is intertwined. He was very punctual and expects the same. Respect in this class is earned and not given.
I thought online classes are not engaging but this one is exception -al. Professor is a natural when it comes to teaching. The recordings came through as warm and interesting and organized. Assignments need a bit of research and writing essays. More opportunity for office hours welcome. If you can handle online, this is as good as it gets!
Did not give feedback on work. Graded assignments and papers taking of a substantial amount of points with no explanation. Not many opportunities to improve your grade, only four assignments. I was very disappointed in the communication aspect and would have appreciated more feedback and better instructions.
One of the worst online classes I've ever taken. In the beginning, the Collaborate sessions were nice and engaging, but that didn't last long. This professor gives you 30 mins after class to turn in all assignments!! It's so ridiculous and he is not lenient if you already had other time commitments. He also takes weeks to grade w no feedback!
Worst teacher in utsa. My whole class had to contact the department because out of 60 students, more than half were failing in the middle of the semester. He gives 0 feedback. Other students warn me not to take him, but I needed the grade. WORST MISTAKE EVER. When contacted for feedback he would call us stupid and get defensive.
Sadly I would not take this professor ever again. I found the class and his lectures very interesting but when it came to instructions and grading I was extremely disappointed. His instructions were vague and his grading was tough, followed by very little to no feedback on assignments.
Disregard the low-quality reviews for this course due to many of the students that give false accusations about his teaching methods. The course is very informative and well organized with fascinating lectures I personally enjoyed. Two papers were given and it is research-heavy, but if you put enough effort then you will do great. Be respectful.
I would never recommend taking him to anyone. I have heard many negative things about him on top of the things I experienced in his course(s). His ratings on here were great which is why I decided to take him, but I definitely have regret. He was passive-aggressive the whole semester and his TA would say it was "just the way he is." Stay away
This was an amazing class! The lectures were rich in content related to the importance of integrating body-mind health and well-being. Dr. Fernandez encouraged us to participate in meaningful discussions and fostered a learning environment that both challenged and equipped us with the academic skills to contribute to the human growth experience.
I've seen a couple low reviews and I have to say those are very inaccurate. I've taken both his classes and I have got to say he is as good as they come. The way he teaches really helps you grasp the information. His anecdotes about his personal experiences are always a treat to listen to. I've even become more healthier thanks to his teachings!
Online learning is difficult but this class inspired me to learn. Most classes had multiple choice, this one required research papers. Had to use PsychInfo. This helped me grow in my writing and research skills. Dr. Fernandez was always professional adressing my questions within 48 hours. The experience prepared me furture academic endeavors.
One of my favorite classes that I've taken. Does take up some hours of your week, but I enjoyed this class and learned a lot. I wish that I could have met Professor Fernandez in person. He is very intellegent. Super grateful for this experience.
I never found a professor more interesting and well-informed than Dr. Fernandez. He knows how to relate psychology to everyday life and world affairs, and after I talk with him, I come away motivated to apply what I learn. Even through stories sprinkled with a few jokes, he's totally professional, and if you didn't get that, then get help.
Do yourself a favor and take psychology of health with Dr. F. If you need a break from paper writing or stats, take this class. I have learned more from his lectures than any google search. Be warned: the lectures require you to actually take time and watch them, they can be lengthy but if you're into clinical psych, you won't really mind.
Where have I been? Dr. EF must be great in classroom, but glad it was at least possible to hear and see him online. What a voice!. Recorded lectures stuck to topics -- from diabetes to sexual dysfunction. Grading a bit heavy on assignments and a multiple-choice would have worked well. I really liked the project on case study.
This class was supposed to be in person, but it was moved to online. I wish I could have taken Dr. Fernandez in person because his lectures are THAT good (and his voice is nice to listen to lol). The class is graded on 4 workbooks which you fill out while watching the lectures so PAY ATTENTION!
The lectures themselves are very interesting to watch, but he does ramble and they are super long. I put them in 2x speed. The class is only graded on 4 assignments and they are graded tough. No extra credit is given. Personally would not take again due to how the class is graded, but was interesting.
Professor Fernandez is one of my favorite professors. I took his online Psych Health class and learned a lot. The lectures were enjoyable, and the only graded work was workbook notes. I loved learning without the stress of exams, and I wish I could've taken his class in person.
Need to buy a $35 workbook, required. Lecture videos were 2 hours at most, but super informative! Really enjoyed learning about each topic, wish I could've taken the class in-person. Don't wait till the last minute to watch lectures, your grade will suffer for sure. Just write notes on what he says that isn't in the workbook, and you'll be fine.
