Professor Tasar is very knowledgable, friendly, and has easy quizzes. The class is reading heavy, and the TAs give most grades. Very interesting class though
The class is VERY reading heavy. The lectures are bad, but a lot of the time there are little details that he doesn't always go over. However, he always does his best to answer any questions. He is always open to emails and office hours. Overall, he is very knowledgeable, sincere and fair. If you want to laugh in lecture take this class.
Very knowledgable, good at conveying all the information in an interesting and understandable way. Not many assignments. Lots of reading, but its not terrible and the books are not bad.
Very enthusiastic about what could be a dry topic. I am not a history major and was only taking the class for GenEds but he made me want to take another HIST course at some point! As long as you put in at least moderate effort and take decent class notes you will be fine.
Professor Tasar was a decent lecturer and the quizzes were easy. The issue was the TA. There were four, but mine graded extremely harshly, so it wasn't that great an experience
He's great and lectures aren't boring. Only took class for geneds and I learned a lot from him. There is a lot of reading but he understands the college struggle. Also, for the final he was open for people to ask him questions and he responded almost immediately through emails despite it being really late at night
Attendance is mandatory and will have to do a lot of reading. He is very nice and understanding. I took the class during the summer and i thought it was an easy class.
Didn't do so hot on a quiz so I went to his office hours to talk it over with him. He was so helpful and literally sat there and gave me points back as we spoke! He is very nice and responds well to students who are eager to learn. If you can, try to take a small seminar class with him rather than a large lecture class.
At first I didnt take the class seriously and still did well. If you read the books you will get an A hands down. If you dont read the books be ready for a F. He is a great professor and I loved the books we were assigned to read. I would take this course again!
I LOVE DR. TASAR!!! His class is everything a gen ed course should be-- interesting, useful, and not too much work. He is by far one of my favorite professors at UNC, and I am not a history person, so that's saying something. Everyone should try to take one of his classes while at UNC
Professor Tasar was by far my favorite professor at UNC so far. He is very personable and even stopped the class to escort a student to CAPS because he wanted them to get help when they showed up to class crying. All of the readings are very interesting and he never assumes that he is correct. He is okay with being corrected and proven wrong.
Professor Tasar is an incredible professor. He is absolutely brilliant with two degrees from Harvard and one from Stanford. But more than that, he is one of the most genuine, thoughtful, and hilarious professors I have ever encountered. He makes topics come to life with his charm and enthusiasm. 10/10 take a class with him--you will not regret it.
This is one of those classes that will grow on you over time and end up changing your perspectives on the world. Unlike many history professors, he really hones in on teaching overall concepts and themes, rather than focusing on the small details, which is very refreshing. However, he does have a unique lecture style that takes time to get used to.
Professor Tasar is the best professor I've had at UNC. He clearly tells you what is expected of you, and he really cares about the class and whether he is doing a good job at teaching. He is extremely smart and just an all around competent and amazing professor. This class was interesting and not super difficult, but there was a bit of reading
This class was very interesting but it is crucial to pay close attention at every lecture because all the information/curriculum is communicated verbally. There was a lot of reading (sometimes up to 60 pages at a time). However the professor is very very intelligent and presents perspectives that I have never seen before.
Tasar a by far the best professor I've had and made me want to pursue a minor in History. The lectures are super interesting and sometimes he'll go off on hilarious random tangents. He lets you know what's going to be on the tests too, which is great. 10/10 recommend
Prof. Tasar is a great lecturer. Class was great, I felt like I learned a lot. However, grading was very harsh. Says specifics don't matter, you just need to understand contexts and the whys-don't believe him. Both quizzes had specific questions. Test Short IDs and Essays require specific information.
I loved this class with Dr. Tasar! The subject matter was extremely interesting and I loved his lecture style and sense of humor. I was always excited to come to lecture (granted, I really like history). He did assign a lot of readings, but they were interesting and helpful. Everything is graded by TAs. Overall, a good class, not too much work.
One of my favorite professors at UNC so far. He really loves the topic he's teaching and it shows through his lectures. He's funny, incredibly helpful, and approachable. The class was also great and you learn a lot about modern global history so it's still incredibly relevant. I would recommend taking this class with Tasar
The class is very lecture heavy but Tasar's lectures are very fascinating and will keep your attention. He is very knowledgeable in his field but does not mind being told he is wrong. There are two quizzes, a midterm, and a final, all of which he prepares the class for very well. One of the best professors I've had at UNC.
This is my 3rd class I've taken with Tasar and he is great! This class has been my least favorite, probably because I took it because I liked his teaching style rather than because of my interest in the class content. The first half of the class is based off of textbook readings and the second portion is based off of Russian literature.
Very nice professor, informative lectures. He always answers our questions so patiently and carefully. Choose your TA carefully, that matters a lot.
He is the BEST professor to take this class with, and the class itself is extremely interesting and relevant to current day issues. He is such a gifted orator, you can't not pay attention, and the way he presents the material is extremely insightful and unbiased. He is also really sweet and I would recommend getting to know him in office hours.
Professor Tasar is a great lecturer, one of the best I have had at UNC. HIs lectures are dynamic and he makes complicated topics simple and easy to understand. He doesn't assign a textbook, but instead assigns books that go along with the topics he covers in class. Grades are done by TAs, so the grading is somewhat sporadic in that regard.
Professor Tasar is by far one of the best professors I have had so far at UNC. He makes the material so fun to learn and easy to understand. He does lecture the whole time, but I found him very interesting and entertaining. There is no textbook, but he assigns a novel for each unit that he teaches. However, I really enjoyed all of the books.
I LOVE dr. tasar. the material is easy but interesting, and the books we have to read are actually really enjoyable. doesn't take attendance, is VERY clear on what we have to study for exams (he'll give key terms and essay prompts in advance) and just an all around nice person. he made me want to pick up a history minor - take a class with him!
I love Professor Tasar!!!!!! He made learning the material easy and was always willing to give help outside of class. He did not have any required textbooks but does assign books to go along with his topics. He was a very good lecturer and would always have funny stories to go along with the topics we were learning about.
I've never given feedback before but Dr. Tasar deserves it. I'm a STEM major and have always hated history all through out high school. Dr. Tasar's class was one of the first I took and by far the best one. He makes class relatable and enjoyable. You have few grades, but if you show up to class and pay attention, you'll do great!
Eren Tasar has such a passion for the subjects he teaches that you can't help but feel inspired, too. His grading criteria is very straightforward, and the material covered in lectures are pretty much what's covered on tests and exams. If you do the readings, you'll do fine.
Dr. Tasar is the best professor I've had at UNC! You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and has a passion for the material he teaches. Your grade in the class depends on the TA and consists of 2 quizzes, 2 papers, a midterm and a final--also 3 books to read. 10/10 would recommend this class and Dr. Tasar!!!
Professor Tasar is awesome! He is so funny and does his best to make complicated topics as simple as possible. Also, he tells you exactly what to expect on quizzes/exams/papers. Your grade does depend on your TA so choose wisely!
Professor Tasar is very interesting and the material of HIST140 is very manageable. There was no textbook for the class; he assigned several novels which were easy to read and interesting but did not test us on them, they were simply discussed in recitation. He told us exactly what would be on the tests and quizzes and was a very fair grader.
I loved HIST140 with Dr. Tasar. Two papers, midterm, and final. Getting an A is very doable. There is a decent amount of reading but it is totally manageable. You will want to go to class even though its not mandatory. Loved this class
Tasar makes this class worth taking because his lectures are amazing. I had no interest in the subject before, but it's his passion for the subject and how nice and welcoming he is that makes it such a great class to take. It's based on reading some excerpts and your writing and if you can pull what he emphasizes in class onto the exam you're good.
This class was an easy A. He said on the first day you didn't have to show up but I usually went and the lectures were so interesting. I didn't read the books but ended up with high 90s on the essays. Very kind man who is very passionate about his studies and this reflects in his work. Altogether it was an interesting class I would absolutely take.
Prof Tasar's class was so engaging and we spent most of it just discussing different books and issues. He's super sweet, accommodating, and cares about his students, so as long as you show up and just engage you will get an A.
He is probably my favorite professor I have ever taken at UNC and I genuinely learned a lot from him. The class is graded on multiple low stakes assignments compared to it being test-heavy, which I greatly appreciated. He is a very nice guy and super accessible outside of class if you ever need help with anything. Would highly recommend!!
Professor Tasar is by far my favorite professor that I have had so far at UNC. His lectures are quite interesting and engaging, and I really learned a lot from them. The class isn't homework heavy with the exception of the readings, but the assigned readings are never too extensive and honestly can be interesting. Not too difficult and a fun class.
Dr. Tasar is a gem. I wasn't really looking forward to the material of the class (Modern Central Asia), but he made it so interesting. Dr. Tasar really just wants to make you more interested in the subject and doesn't try and trick you through the grading criteria. A wonderful professor and a hilarious man.
Professor Tasar is a great teacher, he is really approachable and genuinely cares about his students. I'd happily take another class with him again.
Hist 140 with Tasar was a very interesting class. I learned a lot about real world problems and I glad I took the class. However, this is not an easy class. I don't know if it is because I took it online but the readings are very long and the lectures are very dense. Depending on how good you are at writing essays, this might be the class for you.
Taken Fall of 2020, so lectures were completely asynchronous. Dr. Tasar is great but I never got the opportunity to interact with the guy. He covers colonialism via four case studies: North Korea, Congo, Israel, & Iran. The only assignments are 2 quizzes, 2 five page papers, a midterm and a final. Your grade is dependent upon your TA's.
I took HIST 140 with Professor Tasar in Fall 2020 and truly only have positive feedback. All lectures were asynchronous but, this did not inhibit him from keeping it interesting and funny! The required readings were extremely meaningful and mainly incorporated first-hand accounts, which is rare. Be prepared to read and write essays. Great class!
I had an independent study with Dr. Tasar, which is unique to a regular class. But I did get to know Dr. Tasar as an individual very well. He is truly exceptional. While a brilliant intellectual, he's also caring and not oppressive or smothering like other UNC profs. I learned a lot and his feedback is constructive while also caring
Prof. Tasar is my favorite professor I've had at UNC. He cares more to develop a love for learning in his students than to force students to do busywork for a grade. HIST 89 was a really interesting course covering the emergence of modern Afghanistan. I have never liked history, but he made it interesting, exciting, and engaging!
Prof Tasar was great. I loved the material of this class even though I am not typically into history. There were a lot of readings and few graded assignments, but good grades are easy to achieve on those assignments if you pay attention to the lectures and do the readings.
I absolutely loved Professor Tasar and his course! He is a phenomenal lecturer and so entertaining. I feel like I learned so much in the class. The course overall did not have a ton of grades (2 essays, 2 quizzes, midterm, and final), and everything is graded by your TA. Tasar outlined expectations well and made you feel prepared. Highly recommend
Eren is a wholesome man--won't surprise you in any way. If you don't go to class, at least go to the ones before big assignments. I heard his recitations are goated but his TA's suck so pray he is your recitation leader. Super helpful and respectful to all; I really liked Eren. Watch Lumumba and understand it, it's your first essay.
Tasar was my favorite professor. I took the class for gen eds (and his good reviews, which were merited), but his lectures and book selection made the material interesting. Paper grades depend on your TA and are slightly harsh, and reading is heavy but not difficult, but I would take him again in a heartbeat. Amazing prof.
Tasar is the best professor I have ever had at UNC, super chill and has a very relaxed grading system. I learned so much in his class and he rocked.
Only good things to say about professor Tasar. Gave amazing lectures that were both funny yet knowledgeable. You read three novels, and all 3 are very important to the class, so I don't recommend skipping them over. The content can be very difficult at times, but Professor Tasar is very receptive to questions, so don't be afraid to speak up.
Took HIST 140 for the gen ed but was super glad to have taken it with Tasar. Lectures are optional but would recommend going; they are pretty interesting and he covers important material for quizzes and papers. Super smart guy who is one of the best professors I have had at UNC. Definitely read the assigned novels.
Prof. Tasar is one of the best professors I've had so far. His lectures are amazing, covering a lot, but he does it in a very engaging manner. There are few tests and hardly any homework. Lot of reading for recitations but the movies and books are very interesting. Great sense of humor, really cares about students, highly recommend a class with him.
Take this class for gen ed credit. The only grades are weekly quizzes (which are challenging but open note and he is lenient w grading), recitation attendance, and a couple papers graded by Baiquini, (LOVE HIM!!!) Eren's TA who is the sweetest person ever. I never went to class and just did the work, pretty easy quizzes r stressful tho.
Grades are based on TA's (he also has his own recitation sections), but I hated this class. Super boring. Took it as a gen-ed and had more work in this class than any of my other major classes. Got the same grade in this class as econ 101, and both of those are the lowest grades I've gotten at UNC. Difficult to study for quizzes and exams.
This was my second course with Prof. Tasar. He is always a pleasure. Super funny guy who is very knowledgeable in his field. I learned a lot during the course and enjoyed myself. Grading was very lenient (everyone I talked to got an A), and assignments were not overly long/labor intensive. Most of the graded work was group presentations.
Eren Tasar is a good quality guy I have nothing against him. I'm literally a stem major though and this class is my lowest grade. His lectures are unclear like very unclear. Like I feel like he's just talking for 2 hours. This class has 2 quizzes 2 papers a midterm and a final. I like history but paying attention during his lectures is impossible.
Professor Tasar is very very knowledgeable about what he teaches, you can tell he genuinely cares about the subject. However, he does tend to ramble A LOT and only cover a few slides per 75 minutes. The books assigned for this course are very niche to Middle Eastern colonialist struggles. Not my favorite class, but, an easy gen-ed.
Professor Tasar is a great lecturer, but the content of the class is super dense and difficult to understand. There are several required readings, and you should do them when they're assigned because the papers are on the books. Your grade is based on your TA, and I had an awful TA. There are five grades in the class, so you can't bomb anything.
Professor Tasar clearly is well-versed in the subject and prompts very nuanced discussions surrounding the topics of the class. The lectures can be a bit dull at times but not to the point where it makes following along difficult.
Professor Tasar gives very informative and entertaining lectures. Including the final, there are four writing assignments - read the books/watch the movies and it won't be too difficult. There are also two quizzes which pull from lecture. Overall, a pretty straightforward class with a very fun professor.
Don't be fooled by the rate my professor hist 140 requires an absolutely ridiculous amount of reading and is not the easy gen ed it's made out to be. You are graded on four papers and two quizzes so everything matters a lot. In addition, the papers are graded by TA's and you have no rubric or clear understanding of what they are looking for.
I took this class based on the ratings and have regretted it. This was my first B in a gen-ed class. The TA is a harsh grader, there are heavy reading assignments every week, and the professor rambles on for every lecture and does not go off the PowerPoint so you don't know what to take notes on. When he says it's not an easy A, he means it.
Attendance isn't required for this class which was nice and Eren posts the recordings of class. However, the grading was a bit unclear and done by TAs for the entire semester. There were around five books total that were necessary to read to be able to write good quality papers.
Took him for my freshman seminar. He treated it like a freshman seminar and as long as you tried you got a decent grade. Provided helpful feedback and is a very nice guy.
Eren is probably the best/most caring professor I've had so far. he has a tendency to ramble on and there are a few books/papers, but attendance isn't mandatory and it's not overly complicated so you can really put this class on the back burner and pass with a good grade. he also really cares about the subject which makes class better
He gives a fair warning that only above and beyond work will be awarded with an A. This class tests your ability to write 5 pg papers on books that you must hold yourself accountable to read. His lectures and abilities for discussion are fascinating and worth attending class. Beware that attendance and reading the books isn't enough for an A
Hist 140 is an amazing class that covers an interesting time period in world history. Eren is a great teacher who masterfully guides us through the time period by using 4 case studies. Grading is based mostly on papers and open book quizzes. You have to read a lot for this class, but I found that summaries and skimming was good enough for papers.
Genuinely wants to connect with students, even learns names in a 400 person class. Uses his own insights and self-deprecating humor to make complex topics accessible, and engages with the class to subtly teach them to form their own opinions. Lectures sometimes drag on, but never get boring. A real pleasure, I looked forward to every class.
Professor Tasar is very clear about his class expectations from the moment you step into his class but you can be successful without attending his class at all. I need went to a single lecture and still received an A.
easy going prof, very funny and caring . no exam, no attendance for lecture. papers are relatively easy if you understand how history works. I went to 2 lecture and got A-. Also only did 1 reading for the paper. If you want to take 140, you need to take it with him. He will make you life so easy.
Dr. Tasar was an amazing professor. A lot of the class is based on 6 low-stakes quizzes that are pretty easy as long as you pay a little bit of attention in class. You also read a few books in the class and attend a few events which you'll write papers on but they really aren't that difficult at all.
Lecture was scattered but VERY fun & interesting. Learned a lot about modern Central Asia that weren't always discussed in a regular history class. We read a lot and discussed it in class. Papers were on the books / event related to Central Asia. Prof. Tasar is a wonderful lecturer and a great story teller! Best humanities class I've taken here.
I loved Professor Tasar! He was incredibly funny and kind, class had a lot of reading, papers and a few quizzes, but he was a lenient grader and I found his class super manageable. I would 100% take again because he is just awesome.
Easiest class I've taken at UNC. 70% of your grade is quizzes which aren't very difficult. Depending on your TA they can be harsh on your essays. However, as long as you keep 100's on the quizzes and get above 80's on the essays you'll have an A.
Super easy class-- watched every lecture on my own time instead of going to class and did perfectly fine. Professor Tasar is really engaging and clearly cares a lot about the material he teaches. If you care, you'll learn a lot; if you don't, you can still finesse a good grade and easy gen ed.
Tasar is a good lecturer and he posts the recorded lectures so you don't have to show up. As someone who put this class on the backburner, I'd say this is an easy class to get an A- in but a tough class to get an A in. I elected to take it Pass/Fail after my TA graded my first (of three) papers, which is unfortunate.
I enjoyed class with Dr. Tasar. He gives very engaging lectures and is super funny and kind. The only cons to his class is that he is a bit disorganized, which limited my learning as I am also a disorganized student. Essays are graded by a TA and also are unclear in the guidelines. Nonetheless, great class and a great professor.
He is so funny and you will definitely learn a bunch, but everything is lowkey a bit disorganized. I also felt like he got a bit carried away at times, but it wasn't too bad. Do well on the quizzes (which all the answers will come from lectures most of the time) and you will do fine. Also make sure you know how to write an essay!
Professor Tasar is nice but the course was disorganized & he would often go off on tangents. Several papers to write, including midterm, final, and 2 event papers (which were both crammed at the very end of the semester). Rubrics for papers were unclear. However, a lot of your grade is open-note quizzes that test content directly from the lecture.
just by far the best history professor i've had
Dr. Tasar is a very good professor, who cares about the content. He doesn't make you go to lectures and posts a video of the lecture every class. Your grade is made up of 6 multiple choice quizzes, 2 five page papers, a final, and participation/recitation everything worth 10% of your grade. I would take it again
He is a good teacher who knows his material and makes the class easy (I got a B+ because I suck at history classes). Class name was misleading as it wasn't really "The World After 1945" since a third of the class was before 1945 and we never talked about anything outside of Asia and Africa.
Great easy class for gen eds. Never have to show up to class except for first day. Most of your grade is a weekly online quiz which u can use chat to get 90+. Couple of easy essays and the final is a joke lmao. Class isn't really history after 1945. its a bunch of case studies where professor goes super in depth if u care about the stuff
Professor Tasar was the best. For lectures you had the option to go in person, watch on zoom or watch a recording on your own time which was fantastic. Assignments aren't hard at all either. Only issue I had was I got unlucky with my TA assignment and he did everything he could to prevent me from getting an A but I still made it happen.
Professor Tasar is very nice and if you like MENA and colonialism, he is a fascinating professor. He can go on tangents in lectures and get off topic, but we covered everything. Fairly easy gen ed class, and if you like studying the Middle East and colonialism, I'd recommend getting to know him - he loves lecturing and helping students out.
Professor Tasar is one of my favorite history professors! He clearly cares about the material he teaches and the success of his students. Lots of reading, but the books are generally engaging. While this class is called the history of 9/11, the first half of the course was dedicated to understanding Islam while the second half focused on terrorism.
The lectures were nice, and the professor is very knowledgeable about the material. Attendence for lectures was not required, but the content being discussed was interesting. I did not get lucky with the TA, who was demanding and a harsh grader. Overall, the professor and course were great, but the TA was the only downside.
Dr. Tasar's 9/11 in World History class made me feel much more equipped to understand the world around me. Highly recommend to anyone, history major or otherwise. HIST511 is a seminar, so the class was primarily group discussion, with a mid-semester presentation and final paper. Take this course so you can tell your friends you have 9/11 class.
I love Professor Tasar! He was extremely engaging with some side tangents that I don't think I've ever been exposed to before which made his class very enjoyable. There is a ton of reading, but he prefaced the class by saying "If you don't like reading, don't take my class," but even then the reading was very interesting.
Lecture with optional attendance greatly appreciated (especially for a morning class!). Very personable professor who gave strong lectures and made a genuine effort to connect with students even in such a large lecture hall. Not an easy feat!
