He is very apathetic to student concerns and does not care who passes and fails. Not one person in our class in our class is receiving an A. If you can, avoid him.
Nice guy, tough class
Great guy and good teacher. Made organic chemistry better than I thought it would be. Tests are hard but you just have to be prepared for them. Fair overall. I would take him again.
I heard horror stories of ochem and upon taking the class, didn't think it was very hard. In fact it was a lot more interesting than I though. Until I got his test, which were horrible. They were badly written and didn't cover his topics at all, and he was very unorganized. He was nice, but just a bad teacher. Wanted to help but didn't know how.
I didn't really want to take him for Organic lab, but my schedule forced me to. However, if you want to learn effective lab methods than you should take his class. I really feel more prepared for taking upper level lab courses because of him and his teaching method. He's tough, but he's a great professor. Really nice too
Very caring and dedicated professor. Plus, one of the smartest people I have met.
this man sucks.... his tests dont cover his material and he cannot hold a conversation with a person face to face... its like talking to mr. mackey... seriously
Ballard's class is extremely challenging (Tests are tricky). You need to put in lots of hours for this class to get an A. You could skate by with an easier teacher but you'll learn alot more with Ballard. He is really helpful (could be a little clearer) and can be a stickler about grading and etc. Organic Chemistry is NOT supposed to be easy.
STAY away! He teaches really well, but his exams never ever covers what he teaches! No matter how many hours u put it, barely anyone passes in his class. AND he doesn't curve unlike all the other ORGO professors in the entire WORLD! NEVER take ballard. I sure wont ever again. I'm a straight A student, and this is just ridiculous. He needs to change
....what a shame....a tenure professor, taking advantage .. may teach properly nd but gives the worst exams ever...miss one little thing nd there goes 10 points! take allen or struss..UT needs to do something bout this man
UT needs to do something about your grammar. Ballard is a great professor who pushes his students to the extreme. If you don't get an A in his class...maybe you should rethink your career aspirations. Every student pursuing medical school should be screened by taking Ballard or Allen's Ochem class. If you can't handle this class get out of SCIENCE!
STAY away! His exams never ever covers what he teaches! No matter how many hours u put it, barely anyone passes in his class. AND he doesn't curve unlike all the other ORGO professors in the entire WORLD! NEVER take ballard. I sure wont ever agai.n He needs to change
Dr. Ballard is NOT a bad professor, he is just very challenging. He is always willing to help. The only thing I disliked about his teaching method is that there is little room for error on tests considering he offers no other way to boost your grade. The lowest grade is replaced with the grade on the final and there IS a curve. An A is an 85%.
Horrible Professor!! No matter how much you study, you will never get an A. You will be lucky to pass. Nothing that he teaches in lecture is on the test, and none of the homework problems are on the test.. When asked if his tests reflect what he teaches us in class, he responded "i don't know". Honestly i think that he enjoys watching students fail
Hard teacher but at this level he expects you to be serious about your schooling. Hes not bad in any respects just challenges you. He drops one test and is very willing to help you outside of class. His test are hard but its and upper level college class its suppose to be hard.
Anyone who wants to be a Chemist should take doctor Ballard. BS degrees require taking Advanced Organic and Dr. Ballard will get you readily prepared for that. If you are serious about Chemistry and don't mind putting in the hard work and long hours then you will do fine. His tests are hard but he puts up his old tests which are almost identical.
I got an A in his class. His grading is easier than Dr. Stuss simply because Dr. Ballard drops the lowest test score. This will help you alot!!. I can tell you though that NEITHER professors will prepare you for the end of semester ACS exam final. You have to seek a ASC or read the study guide. This exam will make or break your grade.
I loved Dr. Ballard! He does a lot of examples and no power point! He makes you do Mastering Chemistry for homework but it really helps towards the exams and he drops your lowest exam grade! Great professor!
Took his class over the summer II. HiS exams cover ALOT of material but he teaches very well. Took Struss first time got a D, I took Ballard second time around Nd got an A. With struss I had no knowledge of ochem 2. Ballard taught it very well and explained the concept of what we were learning. I do recommend him if you aiming for med school
He is a great guy to talk to. He's explanations during the lecture are very confusing, and he skips many important chapters. He's tests are very hard, and quite demotivating. You can never pass his class no matter how hard you try. If you don't wanna screw up, don't take him!
Dr. Ballard is really nice and really helpful outside of class, but his class is ridiculously hard. His lectures are confusing, and there seems to be no connection between what he teaches in lecture, the homeworks, and the practice problems to the tests. The exams are extremely hard.
Very nice guy. Very poor professor. If you take Ballard read the book, very little of his lecture matches the exam material. Do the homework and read the book if you want to pass. Don't bother studying the lecture notes. THEY WON'T HELP!!! Also he freezes when a student asks him a question in class and rarely forms a good answer. Avoid if possible.
Very hard, but nice and helpful. Slender, frail, water drinker, three words that describe him.
Just to be clear, I did not mind Ballard as a person. However, his class was terrible. I have always been a good student, but I have to retake this course. His lectures are long, but not thorough. He makes many examples, but does not explain his transition between steps. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
So Eric is a terrible teacher. His lectures are long and you don't learn anything that isn't already in the manual. On the other hand, his grading is super forgiving. I'm pretty sure he grades his lab assignments for completeness, rather than accuracy. The final is hard, but all the other portions of the grade should help you out.
prof ballard is so nice and helpful and if you put in the time and work you will do just fine! he is an all around great person to, definitely recommend him!
you'll do great if you stay positive!!
Not very helpful when your overall lost in the class. I have taken twice and failed both times. Do not take if you have any other options.
Dr. Ballard is very upfront and clear with the expectations for Orgo I. I took this class during the Summer I semester so the normal class was completed in 6 weeks. ITS FAST! and TOUGH! Be ready to WORK and READ and STUDY! I wouldn't recommend taking Orgo like this unless you are ready for it! Dr. Ballard was great! SO HELPFUL! Very nice guy!
Dr. Ballard is a really nice professor, but his teaching style can be hard to understand. He gives a lot of homework online and there aren't many test. Although his office hours are really early they are worth going to because he can help you with what you're struggling with. This class is hard and it's easy to fall behind. Read the textbook!
Literally terrible. His tests don't relate to the practice exams he recommends to do. He is very difficult to understand in lecture. He is helpful when you make the effort to see him during his office hours, however when you need help passing (even when you study you're booty off and are excelling in the lab) he isn't too helpful. Very difficult.
Okay let's get this out there. Professor Ballard is such a hard professor. Don't expect to pass Chemistry if you don't study your notes VERY well and read the textbook. My best advice: GO TO OFFICE HOURS. It's the only reason I was able to turn my failing grade into an A. Do it!
Awful class, lectures are really confusing and he doesn't use powerpoints to back them up. He speaks quietly and goes off topic a lot. His tests are difficult and he doesn't prepare you for them. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go to class you won't know what is going on because there is no material online. AVOID IF POSSIBLE
EXTREMELY HARD. His tests will be on anything possible related to organic chemistry. YOU HAVE TO READ THE CHAPTERS TO UNDERSTAND. Yes, I said it. Go through each chapter, each practice problem and take notes. Also, buy the answers manual!!! If you can avoid his class do it, but if you can't its possible just sooooo much work.
He'll help you want to drop out of college
RUN. useless lectures. have to teach yourself. hard tests. barely curves final. pray to get a C
Although Dr. Ballard could care less if you attended class since he check attendance, go to class, or read the book like crazy. He is very lecture heavy, goes off of tangents and is quite monotone. He never curves tests and you are grateful if you can get a C, or if you just LOVE chemistry. STAY away from him, especially non-science majors!
Ok, Dr. Ballard is a great guy. He is understanding and caring but he is an extremely difficult professor. You really need to love chemistry to do well in his class. Lecture exams make up your whole grade he offers no extra credit, quizzes, or homework. If you want to pass you NEED to read, and spend at least 10 hours per week out of class.
Prof. Ballard is accessible for help, but you need to teach yourself everything. Nothing from the notes is on the exam except in conceptual ways.
Ballard is a horrible professor he is not helpful in anyway and he is too smart and the word choices he uses in his lectures are to advance for college students. I went to his office hours multiple times through the semester and I got NO help. I highly DO NOT recommend his classes to anyone get out while you can. You wont pass.
I highly DO NOT recommend his classes to anyone get out while you can. You wont pass.
Dr. Ballards lectures are overall really boring, his humor is cringe worthy. The tests cover almost nothing from his classes so you basically have to teach yourself chapters at a time.
Great Professor. Very knowledgable.
Go to every lecture, do all the homework problems, and go to his office hours and you will still probably fail. Do not take, even as a last resort.
His teaching style is terrible. He teaches "here's what you do" without explaining. So I understand nothing. And it's a lot at once. You have to teach yourself outside of class. His examples in class don't match the textbook nor the homework.
Worst professor I've ever had, I went to the tutoring center at least three times a week and met with him, and I still ended up doing bad. Would not recommend, he gives a lot of homework and only four tests the entire semester including the final. Homework takes a lot of time to complete and doesn't help you prepare for the tests.
He knows what he's doing, a little too well. Expects his students to understand the material. Bomb one test, good luck trying to pass, it is do-able but you need to put a lot of time aside to study for his material. Other than that he's really nice and likes to answer questions.
Good guy, he definitely knows what he is talking about but is not very good at teaching the subject. Actually wished his lecture was more power point based, rather than drawing on the white board; it can sometimes be too cluttered. His exams are difficult, so I would suggest going to tutoring. There is mast. chem hmwk too that can be time consuming
Had him for Gen Chem 1 and barely passed. Now I have him for Gen Chem 2 and I'm struggling to even pass his class with a 65. 10 people withdrew from my class this semester. Gives you his old tests form last semester, but on the questions are totally different from what he actually tests you on. Do not take if you're trying to maintain a 3.5 GPA.
If science or math aren't your thing good luck passing this class. I was confused often by his explanations to concepts critical to the class. If you can, i would switch out of his class. Nice guy, but cannot teach very well.
Terrible teacher, went to every class for the first two tests and studied with the material he provided, got a 52 and a 58 on those tests. Skipped every class for the third test and only went to tutoring, got a 62 on that test. I can quote him saying the class before a test "Class is out early today because I don't want to review for your test."
UT really needs to do something about this man. You could understand most of the material he covers in class ,but only puts a few questions on his exams on what he actually covers. He makes his tests very tricky and twists information. Would study over a week for his exams to not get higher than a C. Would not take, make him your last resort.
Ballard is the MAN! He treats you like an adult. Gives you time to study on your own (only gives short relevant homework). He is an EXPERT at answering questions - cuts right to the core of the issue without wasting your time. Very accessible. His exams are clear, fair and fun. If you want to be a Dr. for the right reasons, you will love him!
Worst professor I've ever had. Didn't grade exams for 2+ weeks and did not prepare you for them in any way. Never could give a straight answer about grades and was late often. I had to teach myself organic chem 2 because he was no help.
Its a very difficult class but he gives the material to prepare yourself, you just have to apply yourself. Practice tests are your best friend in preparing for tests. Also the homeworks come from the text book solution manual.
course is not helpful. do your best not to be stuck with this prof. doesn't grade anything until the last week of the semester. not helpful, nothing more i can say.
Worst prof I've ever taken. Great guy, awful teacher. Horrible at explaining and only goes over everything once with a single example. Doesn't curve exams. Homework takes hours. Almost no opportunities for points. Wouldn't wish for my worst enemy to take this course with him. There's a reason he's the only org prof at UT with no waitlist.
I took Dr. Ballard's class this summer online during COVID, so obviously a little different. But his videos are clear and useful, his tests are fair. GO TO CLASS THO, and PARTICIPATE. TAKE GOOD NOTES. He's not very punctual with getting up material, but he's made a ton of concessions for us because of that (take home tests, etc.) He is truly awesom
avoid this man at all costs. put in final grades the day the new semester was starting and does not know how to teach well.
THE HARDEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD AT UT. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM AS THE PROFESSOR!!! Average of each exam is around a 55 and he doesn't curve the exams & doesn't allow for corrections. If you're trying to at least pass organic chem I, this is NOT the professor to take it with.
Assigned hours worth of lecture videos in addition to class lectures and homework. Turned what should have been a 1 hour 15 minute class into a 3+ hour class. I stopped showing up to lectures and actually got better grades as a result - that's how useless his lectures are. Did better fully teaching myself from the book.
Honestly was one of the worst professors ive ever had. I went to every class, did every homework, studied for DAYS ON END for his exams and my scores looked like i never studied whatsoever. His teaching style makes it impossible to do good or show how much you actually know. Save your GPA, do not take him as a teacher.
I hated everything about this professor. We had hybrid classes and he just sat on his laptop and wrote notes every single time. No class discussions, no nothing. The averages on the tests were always bad. The final was multiple choice, but all math problems & impossible to finish in the time slot. No extra credit. Worst teacher I have EVER had.
You have got to get in the mindset to teach yourself the material BEFORE you come to class. He is very helpful if you come to class with a general understanding of whats going on. If all you do is practice problems you will be fine. PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN outside of class early and often and youll be fine.
In addition to his confusing lectures, he had us watch so many videos that were not helpful. I learned better from other resources. Also, I'm being accused of an academic integrity violation and his reasoning was "the question was posted on coursehero". The question wasn't answered nor do I have the money for a subscription. Don't take him.
Easily a top 2 professor I've had. And he aint 2. Man goes the extra mile to make his students know the material. Currently typing this while he's standing on a table using his body as a physical representation. Man goes crazyyyyy every class.
Dr. Ballard was the least helpful professor I have ever had. He does not care about his students and his office hours are less than helpful. He ruined the whole semester for me. Do not take this professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY. he knows everyone is failing his class and instead of teaching, he's laying horizontal on the table trying to show orbitals. literally not even close to helpful. 40-50% average on exams. hours and hours of homework. be ready to withdraw because more than half of my class did within the first few weeks
The worst professor I've had, does not know how to teach. Writes on the board for his lectures and has no power points or resources for us to look at. Over half the class had to withdrawal because they are failing. Tests are impossible and the class average is an F. Your better off not going to class and looking at the textbook.
Do not take this teacher if you want to pass. Professor Ballard doesnt know how to teach and has the most monotone voices i've ever heard, i'm genuinely about to fall asleep every class. On top of this the tests are impossible and there is 4 hours of homework every week. Your only grades are homework and tests, so if you fail tests you fail class
Yes, his lectures are useless. Yes, more than half the class will drop. But I found a way to pass! Please, if you take Ballard, read the covered sections before each lecture. This orgo book just became ur fcking bible. Depend on the practice problems found in the book, hw, practice, and practice exam. Oragnize them by topic and practice every week.
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. Writes stuff on the board from a paper and provides no tools to his students other than pearson homework as how to be better. He makes himself available to you. I have never cried about a class before his. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Defer taking the class before taking his class!!!!!
He is absolutely TERRIBLE. All of the exam averages were F's and his response was "you should still be able to pass." He sits up there and writes on the board, yet never describes what he is writing. Exams are 90% of your grade and his exams are impossible and have content that has never been discussed. If you take him then good luck sweetheart.
failed his class beyond repair not even halfway through the semester, and had to withdraw. the ONLY grades are exams and homework that counts for almost nothing. he was good at explaining concepts, but terrible at math. and the exams were all math. i could not have passed this class no matter what i could have done differently.
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had!!! Do not take him, the class was 90% exams which nobody passed, class averages were all below 50s on all exams and he does not curve them. The homework we spend hours on basically counts for nothing. I can't stress enough do not take this professor for this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANNA PASS! Beyond the worst professor I have ever had at this school. I showed up to every single class and it did absolutely nothing. His lectures dont make sense and none of the material has anything to do with the tests. Your grade is completely dependent on tests. Class average is an F and he doesnt care. Please dont.
Honestly, the reviews make his class out to be way worse then it actually is. Read the chapters in the textbook, actually do the homework, and make sure you understand all the concepts on the past exams he posts and you can get an A for sure. Don't expect to just show up to class and get an A, but an A is very possible.
Worst professor I have ever had in my entire life by a mile. He's a fine person but his lectures make zero sense, he is incredibly boring and you have 4 grades all year 3 exams and a final He is very slow and often runs out of time and then makes you learn the rest of the chapter on your own outside of class. Do not take him please it is miserable.
The only thing that really impacts your grade are the tests, and his lectures aren't useful. He went overtime often, and he isn't engaging. HW takes a while, but it's the most helpful tool to study for tests. He doesn't seem to care that much about people passing. Don't take him if you can help it. If it's your only option DO THE HOMEWORK
I was determined to pass this class as a science major. His lectures are helpful if you skim the material before class to get information about key points discussed in each chapter. I started off bad but once I started studying it got better. He warns you this is a study-intensive class but most do not believe him. I know I didn't at first.
Dr. Ballard has been my favorite college professor. He is accessible and more than willing to help. He gives practice exams that he has given previously. He has recorded all the lectures. Therefore, you can rewatch them multiple times. Organic chemistry is hard and requires hard work, but Ballard is an amazing professor.
Super easy grader for lab assignments, but will not return graded papers until the very end of the semester which does not allow for improvement.
Organic chemistry is not an easy class, but Dr. Ballard makes it as painless AS possible. He supplies all the necessary materials for you to succeed in the course it is just a matter of if you put in the effort. Ample amounts of pre-recorded videos on every topic are available, many practice problems, and practice exams.
I don't really understand why Dr. Ballard has a bad rep. I seriously think it's from the people who didn't listen to Dr. Ballard when he said we need to constantly be doing practice problems to succeed in Organic Chemistry. He gives us so many resources to succeed. He posts all lectures and practice exams that are very similar to the real exams.
Most underrated professor at UT. Ballard gets a bad rep because he gets many students who don't want to work and want to get free points from homework. Do the homework problems, understand the problem-solving process, and you will do well on his exams.
Great professor. Do lots and lots of practice problems and you'll be fine.
Dr. Ballard is not a layman's professor. He takes as much time as he can on the lectures but the course is fast paced no matter which professor you take because there is a standardized ACS exam at the end of the semester that professors have to proctor to. Ballard gives you so many resources, if you study hard, you will do well, if not, you fail.
very nice professor, however his explanations are very rushed paired with a note packet that does not give actual stated explanations (have to rely on his explanation in lecture), it can be extremely hard to follow along in the course if you fall behind, But the class structured with weekly quizzes can benefit students in preparation for exams.
He was honestly great for an Orgo professor, I'm not sure why he gets a bad rap. He provides many practice problems and doesn't throw curveballs. Gives you credit for for answers that aren't 100% correct. Super nice, empathetic, and wants you to succeed.
I don't know why he has bad ratings, but his class seems easy than other professors. He gives you exams and quizzes from the previous semester to practise. His exams and quizzes are fair; you'll see the same questions but different compounds/ molecules on the exams and quizzes. He had lecture videos for you to watch or review after class. Amazing!
HE IS SUCH A DIFFICULT PROFESSOR. THERE WERE THREE QUIZZES A WEEK. the grade is composed of very few things. I had a great grade after exam one, and it after exam two and the final, i had a D. Retaking in the fall with a different professor.
Had him for Orgo 1 lab chill guy labs last 4 hours, but is probably the same for other professors, grades fairly not easy but not hard, is there to help you through lab, quiz at start of every lab
You will have a quiz on every chapter so either once a week or once a lecture, sometimes twice. He treats his lectures like a review and sometimes wont get through everything so you have to do notes outside of class. He also goes over time often. The class is doable but requires a lot of out of class studying and work and he will tell you that too
Professor Ballard is very knowledgeable and cares about his students. You have to be a diligent worker to succeed in this class. Many of the ratings complaining about him are lazy students who don't want to put in the work to succeed.
I did not have him for lecture but as far as lab goes he was great! He did not care if you asked a million questions about the procedure, his lab write ups are straightforwards, he enjoys talking and making jokes with the class, and is so caring! I messed up more times than I can count and he never got frustrated with me
If you want to pass orgo 1, do NOT take Eric Ballard. He reads slides in a monotone voice, then skips half of them and tells us to watch his pre-recorded videos. Doesn't teach actual strategies for applying knowledge, just some arbitrary examples. Condescending and unhelpful out of class.13 quizzes in 13 weeks, HW unrelated to quizzes/exams.
It seems like he genuinely wants his students to fail. AVOID his lecture AT ALL COSTS!
Professor Ballard is a very nice guy, but his teaching was not that great. Many times, he wouldn't finish reading the slides and would just tell us to watch videos he posted instead (which weren't very helpful). The class consisted of 13 quizzes, 2 exams, and the ACS final exam. You need to study a lot for this course if you want to do well.
