dedicated guy
dedicated, excited and fun!
Eric is a great professor. This is his first year teaching at NKU and this is my first ant class. I've learned alot so far and highly recommend him.
Pretty good class...the way it was presented could have been more fun, but overall it was good.
Very helpful teacher and interesting class. He is very passionate about what he teaches which is awesome! Fairly easy class but you must study and read your text. If you do this you will do well. Glad to have taken this class!
Helpful, fun and good professor. Makes material easy to understand. Highly recommend taking this course either as a gen ed or part of minor.major.
Eric is one of the best professors that I've had so far. Hes funny, down to earth, and a very nice understand guy. I definitley think everyone should try and get into one of his classes!!
Eric is a great professor. He is very helpful and easy going. Prior to this class I liked geography a lot, but I learned a whole lot more from him. I would definitely recommend him for any class he teaches at NKU.
Very easy going and approachable. Good class!
Awesome, one of the best teachers i've had thus far in college.
GEO 101 with Professor Bates was the first college class I ever took - it was absolutely amazing!!! Professor Bates makes the class enjoyable and fasinating, yet I learned an unbelievable amount. He couldn't have been any more friendlier or accomadating towards his students. You're definitely making a mistake if you don't enroll in this class!!
GEO 101. I actually enjoyed the class and Eric Bates. He is fun and smart. I also like that he is so excited about what he is teaching. You don't see that much. Most of all I appreciate his display of Christianity. Unfortunately, I don't usally see that in a professor. I hope Eric Bates keeps teaching for a long time. Thanks. MKH
awesome.
Eric is a great professor. Everyone should take one of his classes. He is a really down to earth person who you can ask questions to and not feel stupid. WONDERFUL!!!!
this was a very fun class! by using movies and outside references (Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond) he really made the content come alive.
If you don't get into this class you are making a big mistake. He was awesome and pretty easy! I had a blast!!
He's awesome, and makes the class fun!
I thought Eric did a great job of relating the text book to what is currently going on in the world.
One of the best @ NKU. If I get another chance to take 1 of his classes I mos def will
Great teacher! He mad class a lot of fun
Great job, doesn't use written or powerpoint notes, but overall good job. Made a boring subject exciting
Fun teacher! Loves the subject.
I wasn't all that thrilled with him. Certainly not worth raving about.
I don't know what this person was thinking below. He was great. I just got on this website looking around and found him listed. I really recommend him for this class. He loves teaching about Native Americans alot.
He's a great guy. A lot of fun!
The anthropology dept needs to be grateful to have Eric on its staff. He is a great teacher and loves NA studies. I recommend him.
Great class definitely would recommend it to anyone. Eric is a great professor, alot of fun. I wasn't interested in the subject but he made what I thought boring alot of fun! It's definitely a class worth taking! You won't regret it!
Became an Anthro major because of him.
This class was pretty easy. If you come and listen to his advice you will pass. You only have 4 grades... 2 test, a paper, and a presentation on your paper. The professor is extremely nice and very interested in this feild. He will go out of his way to help you and get your intrest in this feild.
Great teacher! Even though attending isn't mandatory if you go you can skip most of the reading and still get a good grade. His interest in the field he makes the class interesting and his personality if fun. Also, he usually lets you out early.
If you take notes and study them you will do well in this class. Eric makes the class fun and interesting. I look forward to each class.
Eric made this class a lot of fun. He is a very interesting teacher and makes learning the material a fun experience. You come out knowing more than you thought you were learning because he makes the class so entertaining. Highly recommend that anyone whether an Anthropology major or not take this guy. He's great.
Eric is very passionate about this subject and it is certainly conveyed through his teaching of this course. He's very easy to get along with and down to earth. Very willing to help. Awesome class, definitely recommend him!
This class is fun and well worth taking. Eric makes it interesting and i have learned more than i thought possible about a subject that i was passive towards. I have really enjoyed this class. Take this class if you get a chance.
Eric is a very laid back guy who made the class very enjoyable. Before each test he reviews what will be on it. With a little bit of effort, it is easy to get an A.
I thought this was an appropritately challanging class, especially for non ANT majors. It kept my interest, which is notable as anthropology is not my strongest area or interest. I took the class to satisfy the non-western requirement, but, as mentioned above, I did find the material interesting and the class well instructed.
A great guy. Truly cares about people in general and the subject matter in particular.
Great professor. Lets class out early, but appropriate to get material covered. Tests were okay. Did not talk about some of the material for the test which was frustrating. Easy A, that is if you do the work required. Used the textbook to reiterate the material taught. Watched movies for some material.
He lectures. He is not too hard and if you don't really like anthropology you will just like him as a person. He has a fun personality and that wakes you up a bit and helps you pay attention just a little bit more. He is lenient but will not allow you to walk over him.
Fun class
Made a long evening class fun. The quirkiest sense of humor yet encountered in an instructor. Will always help if needed. If you do the work, you get the A.
Lots of fun. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you go to every class he might give you a present. Gave me his family's bluegrass Christmas album. Best General Education Class. FOK!
AWESOME! A lot of fun. Really laid back and great professor
Great Class! I had no anthropology experience prior and this instructor made it fun. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Excellent instructor. Made class fun and interesting. You come to class and do the work you get a very good grade!
He made the class really fun. Easy to get along with, tries to invoke interest in the subject.
Professor Bates is cool. His lectures can be a little dry and he flies through the notes. The exams are pretty tough, too. But I got 18 added points after extra credit and a curve. Studying is key to a good exam grade.
bates is a very helpful instructor... coming to class after reading the material and getting involved in class discussions makes the class seem easy
Loved this class! The tests weren't difficult, but could be challenging. Really easy to pay attention to the lectures, especially if you get involved.
cool guy
Really enjoyed this class and Eric Bates was the main reason!! learned alot about something I had very little knowledge.
Very easy to understand and get along with. If more professors were this easy to get along with, I would have graduated on time! He never looked down on us.
Great teacher and has a good sense of humor
Great class - very helpful. As long as you do your assignments and study you'll do fine.
Absolutely a fantastic teacher. Mr. Eric Bates is the worlds best teacher, grab him when you can you will love the class I guarantee.
Very nice teacher with great humor. I got my grade because of my own fault. If you pay attention and follow his instruction, you will do fine. A class that is worth taking!!!
Extremely helpful, I took this class from 6-9 every wed night, and even though the class was long it was ALWAYS entertaining and he usually let you out early. Learned a lot during this class and looked forward to it. He only has two tests, a paper and a presentation during the whole course. Interesting, good sense of of humor. TAKE HIM!
Great professor with an awesome personality and sense of humor!
What a nice guy. Very invested in his students and his teaching. He can get a little quirky sometimes but who would ever want a personality-less professor?
The class is very easy and he has you well prepared for his exams.Only two exams. Research paper is the biggest project and easiest. He's a great guy and he will provide help if needed.
Never a boring lecture, He's a real hoot when you are going through the material. Only class I look forward to.
very good over all teacher!
This had to be one of the funnest class I had taken her. He keeps the class lively and is always open to talk about topics relating to the class. Always has a warm welcoming smile for the class. Take his class. You will not regret taking it.
He is a great professor, he tells you specifically what will be on the exams. Research paper was a piece of cake and so was the presentation. Attendance is not mandatory but I think for you to do well in class you need to attend as much as you can. One of my favorite all time professors!
Very fun teacher. Has a positive attitude and makes the class fun/interesting. One of my favorite teachers at NKU so far
AWESOME Professor! I only took the class to complete my gen ed requirement but ended up finding the material really interesting! Completely worth going from 6pm-9pm and 9 times out of 10 you will be dismissed an hour earlier!
This was a great class, interesting subject, lots of class participation.
Great class
Overall Mr. Bates rally loves his job. If you need help he is there for you. Also If you just attend his classes and participate there should be no problems passing his class. I'm 52yrs. old and learned quit a bit about Native Americans, past and present. Very good class.
Eric is definitely one of the better professors I've had. He genuinely loves what he does and it shows. The only outside work you have to do is reading responses and study for your tests. There is a big final paper based on a book, though. He grades fairly and is always very helpful and available, and always caters to the students.
Eric is a really good professor. We got to hear a lot of interesting stories from him and he is extremely personable. He is very helpful and genuinely wants you to do well and learn. I had him 6pm-9pm and we were always let out at 8:15. Only two tests. 2 VERY small paper and one final 5 page paper. Very easy and interesting.
Had Eric for a W only ANT class. Easy. You have reading responses once a week but they are cake. Only test are midterm and final. Show up to class, get let out early and get an easy A.
He was the best professor that I have ever had in college. Made a three hour class easy to go to. Everything is laid out in syllabus and if you just do the readings and go to class you will learn a lot and do really well in the class.
Eric is a great professor! He is the type of professor that wants you to participate in the discussions, so you have to come prepared. You can tell he really cares about his students an is excited about what he is teaching. I had the class from 6 pm to 9 pm on a Monday and he always let us out early. Overall, I really enjoyed the class.
a great teacher that doesn't overwhelm you and encourages questions and participation. The subject is something every one should know and be more aware of. If you miss a class you must get the info on your own,
He's a super nice guy that genuinely enjoys what he teaches. I had a reading assignment due each chapter which was simple. Before he tests he gave you what would be on it. It was incredibly simple to get a 90% or above. If your freshman, definitely try to get him.
Easy teacher, lots of videos and class participation, some of the questions are confusing when he asks them in class, but they are meant to make you think. The reading is easy, 10 small reading responses are your participation grade, 3 multiple choice tests (non comprehensive), and a final paper of 750 words. It's a fun subject, take this class!!!!
He made class easy, but still was able to teach everyone something. Very genuine guy. I would definitely recommend him.
Great Professor. I will be taking his other class. He was outgoing, eager to help, and passionate about anthropology.
Easy to tell he is very passionate about what he does and is open to helping students.
Great Professor! Can tell he loves teaching which makes it really easy to learn.
Had Eric for ANT 230. Loved his class. He's incredibly passionate about his course content and teaches it very well. Only has two tests that if you've come to class for them you should be able to pass them with a little bit of studying. Can't recommend highly enough.
Very enjoyable class! Gives thorough information, with great personal experiences that is related to the topic!
Eric is a wonderful teacher. Very intellectual and energetic about teaching. The 2 test are based primarily on the lecture notes. The book isn't necesary for the tests. It is also required to write a 1000 word paper and so a 3-5 min speech (as long as you show up and try, you will get an "A" on the speech.)
Eric is one of the most passionate teachers in the country. I am not overstating. Very considerate and understanding. TAKE.
Dr. Bates is an excellent instructor this is my third course of his, all of which I walked away with more knowledge and a better understanding of the reverse side of our nation's cultural coin. Awesome instructor, I highly recommend and would definitely take another of his courses.
He is just incredible. Very communal discussions. We are all involved. Guest speakers with amazing stories. If you're in class and read assignments, you pass. He doesn't try to trick you. He's so nice, and loves to have discussions involving everyone in class. I highly recommend him. I learned so much, and got to voice my opinion on things, too
Prof. Bates is an outstanding teacher. If you don't understand, he will make sure to clarify as best he can. My favorite part was that no class participation was considered "bad", all contributions to the class conversation were appreciated highly! Definitely think that if you put in the time, this class will become your favorite.
Eric is extremely receptive to student concerns, questions and makes this subject engaging. At the same time the material covered is expansive with specific definitions required. He explains each clearly. His use of a guest speaker, film anthropology book quizzes and weekly opinions of chapters. This combines for an excellent academic experience.
Lecture heavy but makes it interesting.
smart professors. class are interesting and well prepared.
Bates is easy and as long as you show up and write the notes you should not have much of a problem. The only thing I did not like about his class was that it was at night so not everyone was a engaging in the class. If you want a professor who is fun to talk too and makes you interested in the material Bates is your guy!
I would take ANY class that Eric Bates teaches. He has a healthy level of lecture and class discussion, with funny stories and great films. If you come to class for films and lecture & take notes, you will pass. He is not out to get you, amazing guy! Fun! Storyteller! Helps you understand culture in an easy way :)
I decided to go to college for experiences like ive had in this class
I would honestly take any class with him. He is always upbeat and explains topics so well and it's very easy to comprehend. You can tell he is very passionate in what he speaks about which makes the class that much more enjoyable. I loved going to class and listen to him lecture. My favorite day of the week!
This course was very informative about different regions of tribes, but also about current issues which made the course very interesting. We got to watch many films that were very interesting. The exams are not difficult as long as you are in class.
An excellent prof. He doesn't assign meaningless work , but the work has high expectations. The lectures are great and each one is valuable. so much information is covered in class that you should be able to pass as long as notes are taken.
i would gladly take any course that he teaches, his class is interesting and it was super easy to pass as long as you did the reading responses (one a week) and payed attention during this class. he's also super funny and really cute, which makes it easy to pay attention
Eric is AMAZING! Very inspirational and lectures are interesting and informative. One of my all time favorite professors! Would take his class 1,000 times.
We watched a lot of videos and typed a lot of papers. He went pretty flexible with grades and he was pretty personable.
Very easy test if you show up and take good notes. You watch a lot of videos and often get dismissed early . Only three exams which are easy if you study. Very flexible and nice professor! Would definitely take one of his classes again!
Eric was incredibly supportive and truly cared about all of his students. He was a great teacher and motivator and the class was a great experience.
Great teacher! The class was very lecture heavy, and ai would have like to do more group activities.
Dr. Bates is full of so much knowledge. He lectures without a PowerPoint or presentation, and his energy and interest in the topics really helps you become more engaged. You don't need any of the extra stuff. He paints such a vivid picture for you. I loved his north American Indians class.
Dr. Bates is a joy to be able to sit and learn from! Not only is his methodology perfect for busy students, but creates a fun atmosphere that makes the class fun and nothing to miss!
Watch a video or lecture during class. Then you read a chapter in the textbook and wrote 200 words on it taken as a participation grade. There are 3 test during the course. Its really easy and if you show up and pay attention you should have no problem.
Hes a really great and understanding teacher.
Very passionate about what he teaches, but all over the place with it
The professor helped students to understand and to like the subject !
Erics classes were lectures and movies to take notes over so you do need to be there but it was all super interesting and he is AMAZING at making the lectures fun and quick in general but he let out early all of the time which was also a plus.
Personable
Excellent class on cultural anthropology. Very thought-provoking. Learned a lot.
One of the best what NKU can offer! The lectures are always useful discussions after watching a short documentary and you only have to write a short reading response once a week. Great teacher (Multi talented) and very beneficial information about different aspects of life.
Eric is one of the best teachers I've had! He's so nice, and so funny. Not to mention, a great lecturer and easy grader. We had 3 tests all year, and one presentation/paper, but he was really generous on all of them and gave curves. He doesn't take attendance, but all of his notes are only on the board during class lectures. So go to class!
I loved this class so much! It was my favorite one this semester. Eric didn't make the lectures boring which made it easier to learn. The class was a lot of fun and I would totally take it again because I learned so much!
Excellent class. An easy A because of the high quality of the instruction, not because the professor doesn't care. Grades tests on a curve, very reasonable, and plenty of opportunities to make up work.
Lectures are very interesting. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subjects he teaches on so it makes you want to learn more. Tests aren't hard at all if you pay attention in lecture and study. Final paper wasn't anything to stress over. Easy class with a laid back professor.
Not your average professor, very friendly and inviting atmosphere. Have multiple of his classes and have enjoyed them. Would highly recommend for any one of all majors, this is the prof you want to learn anthropology from and Native Indian studies (231) is a course everyone should take!
Eric is a professor I would recommend to anyone whether you're an anthropology major or not. There is a midterm and final that are pretty easy if you go to class and pay attention at all. Lectures are very interesting and insightful! Very respectful and a chill guy.
I'm a politically conservative student, but I enjoyed being challenged by this class. If you're worried about political bias and need to take a gen-ed class this is the one to take because Mr. Bates will not try to crush you or force you to think his way and dock your grade if you don't.
Fun and engaging class. Helps explain missed question and always gives good feed back on your reading responses.
This guy is an absolute legend. Super easy class to take and honestly very interesting. 100% would take it again and definitely would recommend it to a friend. Bates is super laid back and all-around an awesome guy.
This class was a gen. ed. for me. It was okay, but the material got pretty boring since it was online. Nothing too special.
HE IS AMAZING PERIOD!
This class was one of Dr. Bates' first online classes he taught, but he did a very good job. LOTS of reading, and then essay writing on the books that you read, with a final paper over all of the books that you read. But he is very honest, gives great feedback, and will work with you to help get your paper to be the best it can be.
Everything about this class is easy! Tests are easy, Lectures are easy to follow, and you only have one research paper to type that is about 1500 words. Eric is a very respectful teacher although he expects students to show up on time to class and be present. He will give extra credit opportunities very frequently!
Bates is a good professor. His tests are easy, and you watch alot of films. The book was free through the library but the papers you wrote every week were weighted pretty low, so your grade would never go up. Also, assignments had no due date on Canvas, which made things a little hard to follow. Pay attention and work hard, and you'll get an A.
He is very passionate about this class, and it helped me really get into the subject knowing he enjoyed what he was teaching us! my favorite class i have taken so far!
Professor Bates is an amazing teacher. He made the class so interesting and fun and I learned a lot. He is very fair in grading and giving opportunities for extra credit. I learned so much and would love to take another class with him.
He was a very good professor and kept my attention. He taught his subject well and was not a harsh grader.
Dr.Bates is an awesome professor, you have homework laid out for you on day one, you essentially have 13 writing responses throughout the course but as long as you read and pay attention in class you're okay. Also really funny.
Professor Bates makes this class super engaging. The lectures are insightful, and he's always willing to provide feedback to help you improve. Plus, unstuckstudy is a great tool for studying and prep. Overall, a rewarding experience!
He was wildly uncomfortable to be around.
