Eric is awesome. So easy and very helpful. No midterm or final for this course.
His accent makes it hard to understand him sometimes. No midterm, no final, but quizzes every class. Don't under estimate this class. It's harder than it seems. NOT RECOMMENDED.
His quizzes are way too specific. He is a very hard marker. I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
Horrible... Not a lot of substance to his seminars and he takes forever to mark assignments. You leave his class feeling you haven't learned much
Beauregard is by far the most approachable and down to earth prof out of the three french profs. He does an excellent job in engaging his students into the material and in my opinion, he is the nicest to look at. Lets just say, if there was a bear attack, Beauregard would save you.
He pulls favorites in class. If you are not his class pet, you are in for a ride! Be forwarned
Awesome! Very approachable and takes the time to meet w/ students outside of class.
Approachable, has really good stories about offenders he's interviewed, eager to help students - but I agree with the comment below about teacher's pet - you can tell he prefers to talk to certain ppl. If you have a hard time understanding ppl with accents, don't take his classes - it was perfectly fine for me but for some students it wasn't.
Eric is awesome! Best prof there ever was.
He's very friendly and approachable, but he's not the best teacher. His tests picked out unimportant specifics. He didn't seem to put much effort into the course and I didn't really learn anything new that hadn't been covered in CRIM 241. Nice guy, but I'm disappointed in this class, and this prof.
Eric is awesome. He treats everyone with respect.
Fantastic prof! Keeps you on your toes, but not in an overbearing manner. My scholarly writing has improved so much thanks to him! :)
I found him very helpful. His lectures are very slow in terms of process but he manages to keep it interesting with humor and jokes. His exam, many complained that it was confusing, but for me it was straight and onpoint. He doesnt trick you like other profs. If you attended lectures, read txtbook. you'll fine
I want to agree with this person: He's very friendly and approachable, but he's not the best teacher. His tests picked out unimportant specifics. He didn't seem to put much effort into the course and I didn't really learn anything new that hadn't been covered in CRIM 241. Nice guy, but I'm disappointed in this class, and this prof. AGREED!
Seminar course. Very approachable and helpful. Definitely felt like he considered the class peers. His practical knowledge was a huge asset and he used it a lot to clarify the readings. Would definitely take another seminar with him.
Eric is prob my favorite crim prof! He is very approachable and helpful. I have taken two courses with him and enjoyed both. Readings are very important in the course, especially if you want to do well on the weekly quizzes, you will do bad if you don't do the readings, plain and simple. I would recommend anyone to take a course with him!
Eric is hot!But this class wasn't that great. Focused the whole semester on sexual sadists and murderers! They are such a small % of sex crimes! Also, need to attend every tutorial and talk at least 5x. Need to read ENTIRE textbook, and random details are selected for exams. I'm very interested in sex offenders, but this class sucked. GPA dropper
ERIC IS HOT!!! He makes lectures very distracting with his cute accent and good looks. Only downfall is that his multiple choice questions are too specific. His TA Nick was cute too.
Exams were all multiple choice, asking about the most specific things about articles that you would not normally catch. Lots of typologies to study.
Course content is very attractive, but would warn anybody that wants to take this class. Eric is respected in the research community and is very knowledgable about the subject.. but is an awful professor. Exams are all very specific multiple choice questions that have 5-6 possible answers. Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone
This class is very interesting, but overall not worth it. A great TA made it tolerable, but Eric gives the impression he isn't very interested in his students and phones it in so he can do his research. He is very knowledgeable and impressive, but not someone you want to rely on to learn anything or succeed in criminology. Shame.
Genuinely nice guy, but not the best teacher. excellent researcher but doesn't know how to compile a class properly. exams focus heavily on readings and seek out information that is too specific and do not assist in learning the topic. but a very caring and understanding person.
awesome prof
Great professor! Would take a class with him again
Dr. Beauregard is a passionate and engaging prof. He did a wonderful job at structuring this class for an online audience, and managed to make each week exciting. The class flowed really well from week to week, and the evaluation methods helped give skills in order to tie together all the weeks. Hands down my fav class this semester!
Looked forward to the topic but he doesn't do it justice. He's a pretty poor lecturer in the school of criminology so I'll avoid him for other courses
I loved Eric! One of the best lecturers Ive had. Hes extremely knowledgeable on the subject and engaging. Originally didnt want to take his class because of bad reviews but he is honestly a gem. However, his tests are very research specific so the average is a bit low. Overall worth it best prof to teach this course.
I really enjoyed Dr. Beauregard's class. The material was super interesting and the tutorials were fun and engaging. The TAs especially made the class great! However, just beware the exams can be a bit specific but I found that as long as you do the readings and review lecture notes you should be fine
his exams were all multiple choice and fill in the blank. I finished both exams in 30-45 mins. all the questions were word-for-word off his slides or text. just skimming the textbook would sufice. every class was interesting. overall, a chill guy and a good professor.
Multiple long readings required every week but no guidance given as to what exactly students should be focusing on. There was a midterm, but the final is still cumulative. How are we expected to memorize content from dozens of readings and lecture material without at least some assistance on what to focus on? Would not recommend.
Exams were hard asf, based off almost more reading than lecture but the questions are tough. 2 exams. a paper and participation for marks and exams are worth a lot so u best do good on those ones. He throws up paragraphs on the slides n u gotta write like crazy while he talks. Interesting topic but could be done better by another prof probably.
Worst prof and class I've ever taken at SFU. Our TA left and there was no support provided by him. He must have changed the format for this distance ED class because prior to everyone raves about his class. Every week has 3 readings, content heavy and you are expected to know differences between authors multiple works. Dreading the final
Unfair exams and no assistance provided by TA or prof, students are left to rely entirely on what little information is given in modules. There are multiple readings (sometimes by the same authors) weekly and exams have very unfair questions such as "what were the main findings of _____ et al (20__)".
TA and prof are MIA w/ no feedback. Lectures are vague & don't correspond to readings. Lecture audio cuts off early & prof literally reads verbatim off slides so no explanation on material. Exams are based on cherry picked statistics from 30+ readings. Prof was 30 mins late for midterm. Terrified for final. Course and prof set you up for failure!
This is for Criminal Profiling distance education. BE PREPARED TO READ - three academic articles per week for 12 weeks... and they're all testable on a midterm and a cumulative final exam. That being said, exams are fairly easy, study the key points of the short lectures/articles and you'll do fine. The profile paper is easy-peasy!
Almost 40 articles + lectures will be testable for the cumulative final - expect lots of very specific questions such as "what were the limitations in the article by ___" or just save yourself and take a different class
Fantastic researcher but a poor lecturer. The exams were difficult and required memorizing the smallest details. Tests heavily on the weekly assigned academic articles.
I have never worked so hard and received this grade. His tests were extremely specific as stated by others I studied the main conclusions of the academic articles he assigned. Best tip for his exams follow his lesson objectives, the answers will be in his lecture and the readings supplement them. The TA did not respond to any of my questions.
The lectures are insanely exhausting. Slides have SO much info and specific statistics. The whole class, you're just trying to keep up with his slides and what he is saying. Paper was quite easy. Assigns two articles each week, sometimes 10-30 pages. His tests arent awful, but are very specific to the articles. Really have to keep up.
This course was difficult. Three readings every week and you need to remember the authors for the exams. Exams are cumulative. The lectures is just the prof reading the slides. However, the profile paper is quite easy and straightforward. At times it is difficult to find correct answers and some readings contradict each other.
Dr. Beauregard is a very knowledgeable prof and is super approachable. I found his lectures to be very heavy but he is a highly respected researcher so it makes sense. His tests can be a little difficult so make sure to study both readings and lectures. There are a lot of readings too so ensure that you make time to complete the material.
Lectures were interesting but completely unrelated to any graded work, tests solely based on readings, paper based on students own research. May as well have skipped every lecture and only shown up for tests (which are in person and mainly short answer). Participation was easy 100% but the paper was long and marked harshly. Def not a GPA booster.
Great guy, you can tell he cares about students and their overall experience.
Had this prof during the strike and he was super understanding. Made the term paper optional and only took the best 2 grades out of the 3 tests we had. Basic course structure that I enjoy when compared to other upper div crim classes. No final exam, and textbook was free on SFU library which is nice as well.
Eric made this class very enjoyable. He is interesting to listen to, which helps because lecture slides/recordings are not posted. He was very accommodating during the strike by making the term paper optional and adding extra participation marks. He clearly has a passion for the topics in CRIM 316 and allowed students to engage in lecture.
Had him during the TA strikes and was accommodating with the term paper and tests. His readings are dry and heavy, and have a significant presence during exams. The lectures are separate topics from the readings, so it's essentially 2 new "lessons" per week. The lectures can be boring at times, but he is passionate about teaching and is good at it.
ERIC IS MY ONE OF MY FAV CRIM PROF IN SFU!!!! TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!!!!! (and he is kinda hot)
Very interested in the topic that he teaches. Extremely flexible during the strike but the class contains a lot of reading and it is completely different from the lecture material. The tests contains multiple choice, true false, and short answers. Really really recommend his class!!!
Super interesting class. Just be prepared - he doesn't post the slides, you have to do all the readings and read in between the lines to pass the tests. You basically have to memorize all the lecture content before each test. Tests are mostly short answer (some mc) and the average is usually super low. Paper graded super harsh. Not a GPA booster!!
Unless you love reading, I wouldnt take this course. The lecture material is different from the textbook. This class takes up more time than it should due to the text and lecture having differing materials. Interesting class, but a lot of information is thrown at you. Eric was pretty reasonable in terms of what he asked of us.
never gets through the lectures and doesn't line them up with the required readings. You will be doing lectures that were from 2 weeks ago because he didn't get through them. Then the tests use both the reading and the parts of the lecture he manages to get through. So you're still forced to read and learn material that he isn't even teaching
Class was turned to an online class less than a week before class started. Never gets through the correct amount of course material each week. The lecture and readings each week don't even match up with similar material forcing you to learn two different things ever week. The paper is a research methods critique doesn't really fit the class at all.
what is this class man...
Hardest crim class I have taken at SFU. Average on exams ranges in the 60 %. Get ready to learn half the material yourself as the readings don't match up his lectures. Interesting topic, but students would have a lot more motivation if the grading was fair.
This has been by far the hardest crim class I have taken at SFU. No matter how much I studied the grades did not line up with my expectations. Class is unorganized and not following the syllabus dates for classes makes it difficult to understand what topic you are covering on a weekly basis.
His lectures have no relation to the readings, he doesn't finish the lectures and just picks up on them the next week. This forces you to learn twice the material for the tests - which are all FIB and ask the most specific questions you won't get unless you have photographic memory of each page of the textbook. he also changed the course to online
Worst crim class ever. The lectures are so disorganized and readings don't overlap with lecture content and we are never sure what will be on the tests because there is zero guidance on how to prepare and class average for the tests are extremely low. There is literally no reason why this class should be this difficult.
yeah this guy blows
Avoid if you can, the lecture materials don't line up with the super academic textbook (it's all just studies) and you have to know every little detail of them to do well. I was trying to study over 500 terms because you need to know 5 different chapters, plus the lecture material. I'm generally a good student and I have been getting 50's on exams
By far the hardest CRIM class I have ever taken at SFU because of him. He made the class online last minute and did not show up to any of the in-person exams. He is not approachable. I emailed him a question about the material, and he provided no guidance at all. The class is extremely disorganized. Do not take any classes with him.
The class average for the first exam was a fail - for a crim class. That's all I need to say.
This is an entirely reading heavy course. Get ready to read 60+ pages every week, of material that does not correlate to the lecture content. The textbook reads like a literary journal making it difficult to understand the core concepts, that will be tested. He was absent the entire time and was unapproachable. The exams were on very obscure topics.
RUN IF YOU CAN!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Class was made online at the last second but the tests were still in person but he never showed up. He wrote the textbook we cover but somehow the textbook readings never once lined up with the lecture material every week. Not sure if that was because he would always fall behind in lecture or it was because of poor planning.
Not good. at all.
I had really good experiences in both of his classes(CRIM326 and 316). I found his lectures to be the most engaging of all my courses by far. I personally like the format of his tests, very straightforward and easy to follow (mostly just multiple choice and true/false). Study lecture notes and key points in the text and you'll be good for the tests
My class was online this semester which sucked, His tests are a bit tricky and are 50/50 with the textbook and lecture. Super cool course and you could tell he is passionate about his work/teaching
ignore the 5 stars he is not worth the bad mark.
whatever you do try to avoid his class at all costs cuz this semester was brutal for many students in this class. this guy made the class online in the last second, lectures and textbook material did not align so u need to learn and when i felt like i understood the lectures and the textbook, here comes the test AND BOOM you're cooked.
Just run as far as u can from this guy cuz i took him in the spring and he wasn't that bad so i took him again cuz i genuinely liked his teaching style but i fully regretted that decision. he's brutal. RUN PLEASE RUN FOR UR GPAs SAKE
if you wanna trash ur gpa then take this class. he's so passionate in his lectures but the exams were terrible…
LISTEN TO EVERYONE ELSE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF U WANNA DROP UR GPA!!!
i seriously don't know why i took a class w this prof again i regret it sm.
Listen to everyone THIS GUY IS NOT WORTH TRASHING UR GPA
Guys what was that like omg he seems like a good prof so passionate BUT his tests were not it. I've never seen my grade this bad bedore
I'm not sure if it's the prof or the TAs but whoever it is, i hope ur pillows are burning hot on both sides tonight. Ik now not to take a class with him ever again. Sorry Eric
Eric what's going on man. I loved his teaching style and his passion for this class but seriously this guy set us all up for failure
Idek why i took his courses again. Eric please stop ruining our GPA
I didnt do bad in his class but obviously i didnt do my best either cuz i typically get good grades and this is the lowest ive seen my grade as a fourth year student.
You won't cook in the class, you will get cooked instead
First of all the class went online legit last minute and the textbook chapters and lectures didn't align at all. Some weeks he finished early and other weeks he would skip a lot, makes me wonder if that reflected how bad most ppl did on the exams
Not the worst but definitely not the best prof either cuz he seriously made me think i was gna do good by the end of the course. I should've just dropped the class when i had the chance
I'm truly disappointed in this professor. I took 326 with him in the spring semester and I did about the same as rn but it got better by the end. however, this time it was legit about the same. I know i understood the materials, but his tests would always show something else. I'm so upset
Words cannot describe how disappointed i am in this class rn
Never judge a book by its cover i guess. He was cute but he is quite brutal ngl
Got no words honestly. He seems like such a good prof but idk why his tests were so weird
Changed the class to online at the last minute, kept tests in person but never showed up. Would end class early so he could do office hours during our lecture time. Leading to him never finishing the lecture and falling behind. Readings didnt line up with the lectures and the tests were all over the place for what he was looking for.
Eric was very passionate, but his assigned readings were lengthy and never aligned with his lectures. It was basically learning 4 new topics per week, since sometimes 3 chapters would be assigned. He seems like he wants his students to succeed, but the tests seemed too nitpicky and hard for anyone to fall within the A range.
