He is a tough marker !
He's an awesome teacher and he always goes very in depth to break down complicated concepts into easy and intuitive material.
Dr. Silva is extremely knowledgeable and a respectable professor but his lecture are monotonous and he explains concept in a very technical way which makes it hard to understand. So be sure to listen carefully and don't be afraid to ask question since he actually cares.
A solid choice, if you can handle decently challenging clicker questions. I would rank him in the top 2 profs for PCS211, the other being Springer(Da Silva's midterm class average was higher iirc). He has a very technical approach, and very strict when it comes to class disturbances (e.g. talking in the front), but delivers content rather well, imo
He's very good at teaching, and helping students during office hours.
says stupid things like he will report us to the authorities if he catches us pirating the textbooks, is a hard marker, asks us to show all our work on long answer questions on midterms, but refuses to give part marks even on long answer questions. Overall not a good time taking his class, if you have the opportunity to switch out, take it.
Da Silva is a great professor when it comes to teaching. I find him to be very clear and easy to understand during the lectures. His marking scheme for online midterms is rather unfair (5 marks; 5 questions no part marks). He has a great schedule for office hours so if you have him, I suggest you take those to your advantage.
Very Good Prof, Cares a lot about his students, he gives a lot of office hours and tries to change teaching methods so the class does better. He has great lectures too. If you do all the work and pay attention in lectures you can do good in this course.
Da Silva is knowledgeable but very inconsiderate. Gets easily annoyed when students ask him questions, and the midterm marking scheme did not make sense at all. The lessons weren't very organized making it a little difficult to follow, but he does a pretty solid job at explaining concepts.
Eric isnt a bad professor. He really encourages students to learn how to do things themselves. His lectures are mostly focused on deriving the equations used rather then acting solving questions so you have to use the textbook for that. If you did all the homework and read the textbook passages youll be fine. And the exam is 40%.
okay he yelled at everyone for not understanding. and the lectures are posted late. doesnt give part marks!
Very inconsiderate
This prof does one "nice" thing for his students and has to remind them every class that he did a nice thing for them. Doesn't seem to even care if his students understand the concepts. type of prof that won't make u interested in learning, u just want to be able to pass. whole physics department needs a change asap, they legit want us to fail.
Browski was lowkey too technical lectures styl. He allowed me that extra 8 percent from WebAssign o be a part of the theory so I'll bless him a quick two. Was probably the best prof out of the entire section since he actually taught. Wouldn't recommend the yutes to take him if there are better profs. Also yelled at us for flying in from Mcgill. 2/5

Bad prof, our midterms consisted of just 5 questions and there were no part marks. Really tough grader and he was very inconsiderate to students regarding marks and questions, gets really angry when asked questions.
Does not care about students and gets angry when get asked questions. His teaching is poor and does not go into the deeper concepts of physics. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS
Do not take. Extremely technical. Expects you to already understand the concepts before taking the class. Very tyrannical. Avoid at all costs.
Unfortunately, he did not teach any material from the course outline. We were assigned to read the entire anatomy textbook ourselves, which is fine, but why am I paying you to teach me? The lectures were disorganized and focused on supplementary material. Tests were ok, but many questions focused on tiny details from individual diagrams...
The GOAT
He was very supportive, kind and wants you to succeed. He explains the concepts very clearly and goes through examples and he walks us through hard questions and takes his time to make sure we understand. Our class was exceptionally quiet and he tried his best to get us to interact in order to help us more. Wonderful Prof! The BEST!
this is actually the worst prof ever... we all attended his study hall which was literally jokes... none of the stuff he put on there was on the final exam at all, he claimed to prepare us but failed miserably, said we were asking for these hard questions and then repeatedly yelled at us or mocked us on zoom, dont go to pcs211 study halls jesse>>
This teacher is pretty tough with students but for a good reason and he knows what he does. His lectures are very good, clear and done in front of your eyes taking care that every student understand each step. The way he is teaching is very good and if you want to meet him if you need help he will be there for that.
His lectures are a must-attend. He takes his time explaining concepts and his notes are extremely neat and coherent. He goes over many examples and concepts, hinting at ones that will definitely appear on exams, so it is important to pay attention during his lectures. He is a strict prof but is extremely nice if you are respectful during class.
Not sure why he is getting the rating he is. Lectures were amazing. Tests were tough but fair. He was available to discuss problems outside of class. He did require us to work but overall the course was just difficult and took effort.
I dropped Da Silva's pcs211 bc worry I would not pass the course. he can teach well. He was very clear on what we are currently learning and had a good learning environment and would never let anyone slide if they are talking to someone beside them. Im now stuck retaking the course with a bad, unclear prof. Dasilva might be scary but its worth it
Dr Da Silva is a great professor who is very under rated. He has good lectures that were easy to understand and good teaching methods. He post notes after classes. Pay attention to examples in-class and textbook examples as a lot of these questions will be used on exams and midterms. Go to his office hours if you need help.
Agreed, under-rated. Note a proff for whiners.
nice prof
Can describe this guy as brutally honest. His lectures he expects respect from all his students, and if you do that, he will reciprocate. Exams were fair but easy to mess up because they were all multiple choice. He's an amazing lecturer which is all you want. Probably wouldn't take again b/c I don't like his test format but good prof
respects your time but also his own. explains concepts well, answers questions respectfully and posts lecture notes
He's great at teaching and is open to questions/re-explaining things/back-tracking slides. Also seems to actually care about his students. Tests weren't difficult, and mainly contained what he said it would. He's also welcoming during his office hours.
He is a very straightforward, clear and concise teacher. His slides are good and his lectures are also full of content which he goes through and also gives examples. PCS211 is a harder course in general for first years, but, as long as you pay attention and do the WebAssign homework (where most exam questions come from) you'll be just fine.
Da Silva is someone who gives it to you straight and doesnt sugarcoat things. Good lecture notes and is good at explaining, but is an extremely tough grader who loves fearmongering and scaring his students. Success comes at doing the Webassign, as exam questions were similar, and releases marks quickly. Try to get Prof Singh or Prof Rebello.
He teaches well but loves the sound of his own voice. I'm in second year now and he is still one of the best profs I've ever had when it comes to explaining concepts. A lot of people struggle in this course but if you pay attention in his class and try to understand the assigned homework while you're doing it you should be fine.
He is grumpy and has an attitude, lectures are mandatory and the final was hard. he will not curve. he teaches well and overall he is ok.
Underrated professor. Is "strict" in the sense that he doesn't tolerate noisy kids in his lectures (a plus in my book). Open to questions but can come off as rude. But is a competent prof that is knowledgeable of the material and easy to understand in my opinion! He's not a prof that will make you smile or love him, but will get the job done.
He doesn't like it if you chat during lecture. That is a good thing imo. He's happy to answer questions if you raise your hand. Sometimes I felt like he sped over slides and I have a personal preference for seeing problem written and solved by hand but overall explains things well. REVIEW, REVISE and PRACTICE (and watch Organic Chem Tutor).
Overall he's a good professor, who teaches well and was able to deliver the content of the course and explain concepts in a confident manner. As a result, lectures were helpful to attend and by practicing the assigned questions, midterms and the final were doable.
Solid course. Required an insane amount of self study but was manageable. Lectures were solid and informative. Learned a lot.
Hes a prof that actually cares about teaching and gets mad if people talk which I think is a good thing but he can be low-key scary. His lectures are actually super useful and if you listen to what he says you will most likely do pretty well in the course. The course itself requires a lot of time so make sure to study
Scary ahh mf
I just hate him ngl (do not take him)
Ur cookeddddddd
A great professor who teaches well. May feel discouraging to ask questions, but he's extremely patient. Some students who don't put in effort dislike him, but as long as you try, you will always perform extremely well with him. He provides every resource necessary.
Only had him during the booster course and the study halls. During those sessions the explanations were clear and he was always open to answering questions. He can be very strict so watch how you behave in his classes. Only thing preventing a 5 star is the fact that sometimes his lectures can be boring.
Not a horrible prof, but try to get a better one if you can. His notes are not detailed, and you will either have to go through the textbook or ask for another prof's notes to understand what's going on. Lectures are pretty boring but if you try hard enough you will be fine. I relied heavily on Professor Omar's notes while in Da Silva's class.
Organic chem tutor's biggest opp, he has a PhD.
"I flew in from McGill University early this morning to be here to teach physics for you class🤓"
This physics class is a nightmare. The teacher is unhelpful, dismissive, and rushes through lessons with no clarity. There's no real-world connection, and I left more confused than when I started
L teacher, bad teaching style, very rude, big ego, not a sigma
If you plan on taking hand-written notes with examples, try finding a different professor. Dr. Da Silva does not give enough time to process calculations and theory. His teaching style is meh and if you have a question, then you're better off relying on external sources ;) Apart from his rushed teaching style, I don't have a lot of complaints.
Teaching style is very rushed with many skipped steps in solution. A lot of explaining is supposedly “common sense”. He is quite a funny prof and easy to talk to but learning from him is rather difficult.
Not a good course coordinator. Does not prepare students for exams midterms etc. Doesn't do the examples.
Not a good professor
Gets mad really fast. His exams are horrible everything about him just gives a ....
As he was the course coordinator, he was mostly in charge of making the exams and etc. When it came to exams/midterms the formula sheets provided were no help. All the formulas were scattered on the sheet. Another thing is that not all of them are given.
As far as I know, his study halls is not even related to the exams and midterms. Does not even solve word problems and just throws bunch of equations. Little explaining to each problem and assumes students fully understand it. Lots of yucks.
Honestly the notes are so unhelpful and you need to go thru the textbook. His lectures are no good either since he doesn't explain anything fully. Gets mad easy and crashes out. Funny guy
Lectures are too fast and treats physics like it's “common sense”. Lecture slides skips quite a bit of steps making it hard to understand. He is a funny guy and nice to talk to but not the most helpful in terms of learning.
looks like gru, acts like gru
He doesn't do examples and explains poorly
Hes the type of professor that makes kids scared to ask questions and that's the worst kind. He also made a very difficult final exam that was nothing like his study hall.
He's a really down to Earth guy when it comes to studying and academic honesty. I'm a bit of a slow learner, especially in Physics so his pacing is really only good for people who are attuned to physics and just automatically understand. His notes depend on his lectures, so skipping any means those notes come from somewhere else. Be cautious!
Never again
Midterms were okay but he makes the finals so damn different. Many ppl said they failed the exam because of the increased exam difficulty.
…the exam was literally re-worded lecture problems, the Serway text problems and WebAssign…
This prof was literally smiling at the students taking his exam and struggling. In the exam hall we would be on his phone and periodically look up and smile and the students struggling with the exam he created. Would not recommend.
Ewwwwwwwww.
Lowkey, he's an alright professor learning wise. But don't expect him to be nice as he can be one of the rudest professors out there.
He is not the worst professor, but also not a good one. His lectures are pretty useless and spend most of his time deriving formulas and then just moves on to problems in his slides. The problems are useful for studying and often come up in midterms/exams. But, thats all they are good for. Do not bother going to lectures, just read the textbook.
Switch out if you have this guy
Makes the exam so hard unlike last year. So unfair, I hope he gets coal for Christmas.
Don't believe all the recent negative reviews. He just didn't conduct the study halls very well for this Fall Term, having left us trying to figure out what to study for and how to solve problems in the study halls. These are only for a few questions. In contrast, his lectures are good, although he is quite strict.
All the recent negative reviews are only because he didn't explain the questions in the study hall well. Overall, his lectures are alright, but he is a bit strict. The course is a little bit of review, but just make sure to be on top of everything.
Decent prof, could be VERY blunt at times and does not care about your feelings, but is mostly a fear mongerer who still wrote decent midterms and exams. The exams compared to last year were way harder, but nothing pulled out of outer space, except for that meteor question tho.
I don't know what people are talking about here. The study halls effectively covered exactly what was on the exams. He is super strict in class but rather that than those on YouTube next to me. Lecture slides could have been clearer though. Otherwise he was actually a great prof.
Hes the course coordinator so I recommend you attend his lectures because hes the one who sets most of the exam questions and there are certain examples and things he goes over that other profs dont which is why students in his class performed better in the midterms (many people got 100s) but the final was difficult and the formula sheet is useless
Copies textbook word for word. Doesn't explain anything. Bad examples that do not prepare you for exams
He covers stuff that's on the exam which is great but my god he has anger issues. Honestly avoid asking him questions just silently attend his lectures. Also tbf he made it super obvious in the midterm study hall what the long answer question would be without ACTUALLY saying it so learn to pick up on his hints (overly emphasizing). Omar better tho
This guy is not the best professor but the course coordinator, so it's important to go to his lectures. He has crazy anger issues, gets angry at literally the smallest things, and doesn't explain examples. He assumes that you know this stuff and reads off the slideshow.
Overall, a horrible professor. Extremely egotistical about minor things, disrespectful to his students, and does not teach well. A slideshow professor and does not explain things and expects you to know it before he teaches it. 100% would not want to take his class again.
hardest prof. strict and doesnt care.
his ego once got hurt because someone suggested to use organic chemistry tutor for practice. I used organic chemistry tutor to learn the whole course
the worst professor I've ever had , He gets mad so easily over small things . I believe he has anger issues . He just reads off the slides and I felt like he doesn't care about his students he only cares about getting paid. DON'T EVER TAKE HIM!!!!
Very rude. Tries to intimidate students. Explanations are okay but it's better to learn from textbook. Attend lecturers for the Iclicker. Do the Webassign. Theory questions on midterms and final are very hard. Pretty easy to get good grades on the labs (minimum 80). So as much practice problems as possible.
Had to chime in as these reviews don't match to my experience. The man has a very deep voice and is blunt, which isn't a bad thing. In fact, wish there was that level of quiet in my other lectures. Can seem scary but is harmless. His exams are literally taken directly from the solved problems in the textbook as well as the hints in class.
Just watch organic chem tutor instead. This sala luulu can't teach for his life and his study halls are even worse than Alireza. He got a doctorate in shitteachingology instead of physics.
A real crashout this one. One time I was taking an exam and he walked by my paper and laughed. Also he won a shooting competition and bought his wife a Porsche. Not enough time on iClickers, and he doesnt solve example problems in class. If you want a funny reaction out of the guy mention organic chemistry tutor.
Awful. Has anger issues. Seek help
Show up to lectures. Take notes. He is clear. Get angry at people being stupid which is a told thing (talk during lectures or making stupid comments). Just focus you will succeed. See him during office hours he is awesome.
Doesn't seem to care about his students and often backs away from questions
a big fat meanie, scares people, makes exam hard to see people struggle, strict, sensitive asf
Great Professor . Definitely cares for his students.
Umm honestly, try to avoid him. His lecture slides are merely equations/formulas (which do not make sense at all when revising stuff), and on top he doesn't explain properly. He definitely might have a PhD in physics but clearly needs one in "how to teach." Exams were way more difficult than last year's and barely resembled past exams.
Don't understand the hate on this guy. Lectures were clear. He is available outside of class. And is absolutely 100% clear on what is on midterms and the exam. The study hall could have been carried out better, I guess, but otherwise, everything that was tested was either from the tutorials, the textbook worked problems or the lectures.
Based on all of these reviews for PCS211, I was nervous. Turned out this was one of the best courses I have taken. Assessments and their grading were clearly defined. Grading was incredibly fair. He cared and set-up the entire class to succeed. The material covered was directly brought up in job interviews.
My first impression of Professor Da Silva during fall 2024 was intimidating. However, if you talk to him and ask him logical questions, he isn't that bad. During lectures, he should explain concepts better and solve questions instead of just going over the slides. DO THE CENEGAGE txtbook questions because they will help you. Study hard :p
the worst person ever in my all the years of university do not take this guy as your professor at all this guy is a hard grader and makes it difficult for students to pass. not worth dropping the course and paying for it again to do it next semester. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
Man was boss don know what this craziness is about n looks like a troll
Solid prof, but his example questions were bad
He only does the bare minimum examples in class, and the slides are all pre-written. He mostly just reads formulas without much explanation. He is not very understanding toward students.
His lectures are him reading off the slides and a lot of the slides were the process of deriving equations. His midterms were FAIR. The only people who complain that they're difficult just didn't study. If you did the bare minimum of doing HW and studying theory you will do well. MC midterm and exam so he doesn't grade anything it's all scranton
The man goes through lectures by hand, He is absolutely clear on what is on the exams. The only way to do poorly is not attending lectures and not listening to what he is saying. He is Gru looks tough and “evil”, actually looks like him because of his dress and scarf but is at the end of the day there for student.
Just go to other guys lectures at this point. I haven't been to any of his lectures since I realized how much better other profs are like Omar. Very scary too he tells everyone they're gonna fail and how he expels people. "Not to scare you guys but I will fine you all with policy 61" like wym not to scare us
He's literally a bot, the labs are absolutely cooked lab 5 he made us draw 3 tables 6 graphs including calculations and rap up questions all in 2 hours, its absolutely ridiculous. He'll tell u how to study and what to study for the midterm but it will still be cooked. the labs are just an absolute joke. and its not fair tbh. just switch out.
He is a very strict, by-the-rules kind of guy and has gotten many students in trouble for talking during class. This kind of created a rigid lecture environment where everyone is scared to talk (even convos related to the content). However, he is really good at explaining content/theory behind physics and I enjoyed his lectures.
Although he's a tough and strict prof he is very clear about evaluations, labs, and finals. The course it self is very difficult but as long as you do the textbook and webassign questions you should do fine. His office hours are not helpful at all, I would go to other profs or access outside resources.
I've heard a Lot of bad things about his lectures; however, he's as bad as it seems. Though he's strict and intimidating, he's clear about what will be on the exams and explains concepts well if you pay attention in his class. His exams aren't surprises, they are study hall questions, textbook and WebAssign ( and some from lectures ).
All PCS211 profs are trash, but Eric is the least trash. Serious, rigid, plans ahead, pretends to solve problems live while copying hidden answers. Only uploads iPad notes, no slides. Ruthless course, brutal labs crammed into 2 hours, tutorials run by clueless TAs parroting ChatGPT. Noise? He'll yell, threaten security.
Eric Da Silva is strict and straight to the point. However, this was his most redeeming quality. He was as open as a book about everything he would go over and would underline to practice what was on the exams. His exams were very fair, the labs were difficult because of the lack of time and his lectures are solid. Overall great prof!
I don't understand the hate directed toward this teacher. Eric Da Silva was not my professor, but I began attending his lectures halfway through the semester. He is very FAIR. The midterm and final exams were FAIR, and if you completed the WebAssign homework, you were well prepared.
Very petty and antsy professor. Usually is very on edge until he has his smoke break. Also pretty stubborn and rude. Besides that, his lectures are decent and teaches okay.
