This man has the worst one on one skills ever.
Cannot explain things at all. Test material not covered in class.
one test had an avg. of 43 and he said we needed to suck up our pride, no curve
I hate this professor- isn't the job of a professor to teach?
Very good teacher. You might learn something!!!
grrrrrrrrrr
You might learn something if he was a good professor but he is NOT!
he makes you learn, which is good for those who actually care about learning
Could not pass this man's class, screwed up my entire Freshman year.
hard, but you do learn

He is hard as heck, and has no reason to be! it's just a beginning chemistry for science majors! he should lighten up avoid taking him at all costs!!!!!
A high quality professor. The negative comments only come from lazy students.
A decent professor. He has a bit of a dry personality and can be borderline rude sometimes, but other than that I don't have much against him.
Definately a hard prof, but if you work hard enough you can pull out and A and learn quite a bit. But I would take Bombick the first two quarters.

I had to HAD to have him for all my freshmen chemistries..i dont know..gives good notes, but is sooooo hard! He is a nice guy but that doesnt help your grade.
Fossum is a really good professor, but his exams are challenging. You really have to apply yourself in order to do well in this course. Overall he's a nice guy and will help you out if you make the time to go get help.
Fossum is a great professor. He is challenging, but if you pay attention and study a lot, you'll do fine in the class.
When studying for tests, know normal stuff in notes, and also history on his latest trip. i.e. germany. This will also be on the test. Very hard tests for me.
he is a really nice person and a difficult teacher try to take bombick or grossie instead,
fossum is a good guy but 123 is the chm weedout course so it's gonna be hard like the calluses your grandma's feet. best advice i can give is study everything and do all the problems. once you do that, THEN DO IT AGAIN!!!! lots of work but it got me an A
very hard, worked my butt of for a C
Fossum is a tough teacher, but he outlines what you need to know for the test, if you do the problems and read the sections and go to class then you should get a B in the class or even an A. He's a good teacher who enjoys chemistry
Class was hard until I started to study all the time then it was easy. I was having trouble at first so I asked him how I could get help and he was kind of rude about it, maybe he had a bad day. But if you find a good TA they can be great
Oh my, exams are wake-up call! I'm not all that into chem, but I studied my butt off, managed to get a C! Here were my very very hard worked for exam grades; 54%, 73%, 55%, 74%-on final, and got a 94% in lab. Advice-do good in lab, old exam Q's on final
Covers all the necessary material very effectively, and maintains a lively and animated presence during the lectures. The exams were very difficult, but if you pay good attention in class and study well, you'll do just fine.
All you have to do is get a good lab grade and come to all the lectures. I never opened the book the whole quarter and got an A. Just take notes and study those and you'll do fine on the exams. Hint: memorize your old exams for the final, he recycles q's.
Fossum is a really really good professor... he explains things well and always has a way to relate things to real life situations... his tests are mad crazy hard tho... you really have to study to pass... but it's worth it... much better than bombick
This guy is a true pain in the ass to take
after taking bombick the first 2 qtrs, fossum is a wakeup call. GREAT TEACHER, VERY HARD EXAMS!! you really have to study your butt off for a decent grade. go to lecture and study the book often and you should be fine.
He doesn't explain well enough and he can be rude if you ask him a question outside of class.
He has a good sense of humor
Very good chem professor. He gives good in class notes, works multiple examples, will answer all questions, and always makes time for a review session. He has a good sense of humor and can make chemistry a little less painful.
The class average on our second exam was 62. I'd suggest taking this under different instruction if you can.
People who set their students up for failure should not be teaching.
If you have a strong chemistry background, you'll be okay. Otherwise I suggest taking a different section.
Awesome teacher, but he is by no means an easy one. You need to study to keep up, but you benefit greatly from him. I recommend him over any chem teacher at Wright State.
To sum it up, the class average on two of our exams was failing yet he didn't change anything or offer any type of assistance. Our TA was never available during his office hours.
This is a great site, unfortunately I can't say the same about this instructor. You'll spare yourself a lot of headache and heartache if you avoid this guy.
Very nice teacher...in the classroom. Examples were good, very consistent with the book...yet tests were no where near what was taught. Even with a strong chemical background, he was still hard to handle.
The worst professor I've experienced in almost four years! The other student raters have summed up my experience with him. Stay away if you can.
This class is cake if you took chemistry in high school. I thought it was very easy to start with and he's lenient. Watch out if you've never had chem before, he'll blow right past you. If you want it easy take another prof. Watch out for the final too. I didnt study, and it was shockingly hard
good god!! this guy is awful. don't be thrown off by the first exam, its easy! the next three and final are impossible. like 30% of my class of about 200 dropped it, and i think there was only like 7 A's.
awful. test are very HARD!
The exams are close to impossible, so if you are concerned with keeping a decent GPA, avoid this guy.
Not as bad as people make him out to be. Kinda a dry lecturer and exams are difficult, but its not impossible by any means.
Hard test easy lectures
I overheard him in the stairwell bragging to another professor about the class average on our first test was failing. I did all the suggested homework problems and studied like hell just to pass the test. Students don't learn and retain information by intimidation.
he is a horrible professor! he says he's open to help students, but that's a lie...he just refers you to one of the ta's. and his tests...wow, so hard! even if you study! avoid him if possible!!!
i dont see why everyone says he is so hard. i got an A in his class. all you need to do is study suggested problems and know formulas, cuz he doesnt give them to you on the test and it is fine. i got a 99 on his second test. he makes organic chem seem easy also. want an easier class? take bombick.
Awesome Fossum! He's an enthusiastic chemistry professor, who does a decent job making the topic interesting. However his tests are horrible, and he does not provide much help to you outside of the lecture hall. Still, do the study homework and learn the formulas and you can score an A.
Avoid this guy if you can. Our class average was failing on two of the four exams winter quarter.
not a good prof at all!! avoid him if possible!!
This guy sucked!!! I went to every class and did well in lab and I thought I was doing well in the class, but i got a 69.5% in his class, and had to take it over for .5 freakin points!! Do not take him...take bombick or grossie!!!
I HATED having this teacher. His tests were ridiculous, his lectures were all written on the black board, and they were always hard to follow especially with his poor handwritting. Very unhelpful also. Turnbull was so much better.
he is a HORRIBLE prof. he's mean and nasty to his students. i took 2 years of high school chem and still had a terrible time in his classes. avoid him if at all possible...take bombick!!
Extremly hard and unhelpful
Hmm, I wouldnt go as far as most of these people are. I really liked Dr. Fossum and thought he teaches lecture rather well. He's an interesting professor that isnt boring to sit through. Tests weren't a cakewalk but certainly weren't the hardest I've ever taken. Gives you your lists of important statistics for the tests. I liked him!
I liked Fossum. I thought the class was moderate in difficulty, but it wasnt unusually hard to get A's on all the exams. I think he teaches well and when we got into stuff I never covered in HS, I picked it up quickly. He can be a bit of a jerk at times, but only when people get ignorant/disrespectful on him.
The tests were ridiculous.
I thought the class was pretty difficult, even after having had it in HS. Dr. Fossum has a pretty good sense of humor, but he is imtimidating. His exams are pretty difficult and he purposely puts tricky questions on the exam. He does explain the material in his lecture pretty well though.
Humorous in lecture-a JERK in person-ridiculously hard on tests. U'll fail the class if u don't get someone's old tests, guaranteed. Sometimes even old tests don't help, b/c they used to be easier than they are now! TRICK QUESTIONS! Be EXTREMELY THOROUGH on written portions. I mean write EVERYTHING that you think of in your mind DOWN ON PAPER!
Took the intro class, but never went to class. Wound up with a 78. Not bad for not attending. Just read the book and know what is in the chapters. I found lecture to be quite boring. Tests seemed reasonable. Work for the grade and you will find this class to be rewarding.
While he's a bit challenging, he's also a very easy to understand guy. He explains things in class very well and will help outside of class also; but if there's a problem with how a TA graded a test he will back the TA 100% even if he/she is wrong.
Dr. Fossum is the best. I have had him for two inorganic classes and one organic class, and I love him. He is so helpful during class, trying to show examples and there are no surprises on the test it's all from the class notes. Go to class and review a little before the test and it's not that bad.
He's one of those profs who thinks a failing average means he's a good teacher. He doesn't give you any heads up about what to study for, if at all possible take another prof for Organic
He may be funny, but I feel that he has made Chemistry way too unenjoyable and now I hate science all together.
yes he makes it tough, but you will be smarter in the end. No spoon feeding with this man, expect to know everything. my suggestion if u get him is start the book problems a week before the test, work on them 45min a day and you will beat him at his own 'game'. Be prepared for hard work but you will be rewarded. The stuffed rat is amazing.
He's the worst profesor I've ever had. Fossum berates students for asking questions in class, discourages students from coming to his office for help. His exams are designed to compliment his ego. Previously took class, got an A, took under Fossum as refresher and am failing. Class avg, exams-72,58,68,?,?. Save your money, take another professor.
He was unwilling to help me when I visited during office hours. His tests were really hard and he had T.A's grading the tests and they had to make their own judgment on some of the math problems and they showed no mercy.
Professor knows the material and explains it well. He has a good sense of humor so the class is somewhat interesting. However, I found that the problems on his test are much harder than examples covered in lecture. For your own sake, do the practice problems in the text.
Fossum is an excellent professor. His tests may be kinda difficult but if you go to class and do the homework problems, you'll be fine. That's what I did and I got an A. You definitley learn a lot and are more than prepared for CHM 122. I would definitely take him again.
I like Fossum a lot. He's really funny and makes Chem enjoyable. His tests are killer so don't get up the morning of the test and study four hours like I did. I got a 51%. At least he drops one test score. Take time during the week to study bc he is definitely not playing around.
I've only gotten one B (the rest A's) in my two years at WSU. That one B came from this class *solely* because of the teacher. DO NOT TAKE Fossum. He does not help you- he is not nice and his tests are so ridiculous. I feel sorry for any incoming freshman who begin the year taking Fossum.
His class was a waste of my time. What he teaches in class and what is on his test are totally different. He needs to remember that this is a General Education class not for a Ph.D. Try the other professors in the CHM Department. The only thing I learned was to NEVER take one of his classes again.
Got a C in the class but really enjoyed going to class. I am not very good in Science to begin with but he gave good examples. The class is difficult but if you like Science and put in the effort, you should be able to swing at least a B.
I had a different professor for each OCHM class and fossum was by far the best! I would highly recommend him over all the other OCHM professors! He is very enthusiastic about his class unlike the others. His test are a little hard, but if you study hard and attend class it will show. He gives very detailed notes and is very helpful for the exam.
Although most people say he's really hard, I think that if you pay attention and study as much as this difficult subject requires, it is very possible to get an A in this class. He is obviously very passionate about the subject and teaches it very well. I learned more from him than from any other chem prof.
Great professor! The class is hard but he gives you everything you need. His notes were probably the best I've ever had and he will answer any question. Extremely helpful and was speedy on his email replies. I took his 'super' final and would recommend it for anyone who is good at memorizing. I recommend him to everyone!!
He is awsome. He is a truly great scientist. He is funny and sooo smart and critical thinker. I loved his teaching method. Every class taken with him is worth it. You won't regret.
LITERALLY the best professor ever! I was truly afraid for organic chemistry, but my experience in his class was great. I'm SO GRATEFUL that he offers a non-ACS final, that is SAVING my final exam score.
