He is animated and entertaining to say the least. And he is not bad to look at!!
Really an awesome guy, good class if you don't care about GPA
GABLE I LOVE YOU!!!!!
A Gable class is a unique experience. He rambles a lot and appears to have just woken from a long sleep when he teaches. He seems like a nice guy, but he's hard to learn from.

animated, fun.
SOOO funny to listen to. He's got to be on something. Very nice on the eyes...kind of Greg Kinnear/Harrison Ford thing going on.
He rambles and does not make sense. He can be funny, but if you want a good grade don't take this class!
Okay, he is Mel Gibson and Chris Kattan. As some of the others have said, animated, hilarious, and interesting, but the tests will screw you over.
He is very interesting and funny, but his tests are so hard!!!
Very interesting but hard tests so STUDY lots! Funny, sometimes confusing but overall a unique experience.
Gable manages to be kind of crazy and boring at the same time, which should be impossible. He's still cool, though, and the tests aren't that hard if you take good notes and read the books.
I didn't even know what I was supposed to be learning!
extremely ambigious test questions, you never know where you stand in the class, no fun! If you're a psych major, prepare for bashing
He's interesting. He's unorganized has a lot of reading and his tests are interesting. Never know how you're doing in his class though. His comments about sex and use of profanity seems very odd.
He is a fascinating person and I would love to go and just listen to him, without being responsible for the material. He is very hard to take notes from, and his test are IMPOSSIBLE!!!! PLUS his final is 50% of your grade.
watching Professor Gable teach is like watching a funny sitcom on tv, very amusing... Interesting material, I'm not sure I've understood one single reading.
He is one of the most knowledgeable and best prof. at this school, you can learn so much from him-if u find him unclear,u just have to learn 2 speak gable-if ur confused he'sapproachable,so go snatch him in his office,he'll explain, he has a lot to offer!
Awesome professor
an amazingly smart guy, quite humorous...he can sometimes be intimidating, but is really nice once you talk to him
Very funny professor, lecture is very interesting. However the readings suck.
Best teacher and best class I've ever taken. He's funny, makes anthro fascinating, and is brilliant (and cute too!) Readings are difficult, but tests aren't bad if you pay attention in class. DO NOT miss any lectures though or you'll miss a lot of info
Interesting stuff. He's very entertaining and you learn a lot in this class. Tests are kind of hard, just because I found it hard to take good notes becuase lectures are hard to follow.
I also had him last year for 200. He's kind of disorganized and expects a lot, but he's really intelligent and extremely funny. He makes class interesting.
i think he is an amazing professor. He makes anthropology fun and exciting and opens up new thoughts and ideas that i havent considered before. i love him.
I am future of illusion, so freudian in love with the future, PS. Fututure.
a bit intimidating at first but a really intellegent teacher who makes you think. Almost always available to help you whenever you need him. Would def take his class again. Interesting, and fun. Papers are very managable.
can't say enough good stuff about him. fantastic lecturer, interesting person. he is so fun to listen to, makes class VERY enjoyable. and oh yeah he really is very hot too. i couldn't stop staring at the man! :)
Absent-minded prof meets Chris Kattan! Loved his class & lectures. Tests-multichoice but are rated- whatever he emphasizes is the answer b/c all the answers are right!
This was my favorite class ever. The man is brilliant and funny and made my day. take this class regardless of anthro experience, it will change you.
The class is very interesting ang Gable is hilarious. However, you have to do the readings or else you'll fail the tests, and the tests are extremely difficult because all the answers are right!
Very interesting lecture. Good idea to do the readings and there are a lot of them, so if youre feeling lazy, this is not the class for you. But if you are looking for a good look into anthro field then this is it. Tests are a little difficult too, all answers seem right!
Gable has very entertaining lectures (ie when he laid on the floor and pretended to give birth). Class is enjoyable but the readings are not. If you're not into Africa, New Guinea or gang****, then this class is not for you. I managed to pull a C.
Gable is a really fun guy, and lectures are very, very interesting. BUT there are a lot of readings, and his tests are VERY hard. They're subjective: you have to decide which answer is the BEST, not which answer is right.
The 1st day he gets you thinking, challenges what you thought you knew. Very funny, engages the class in conversation, loves to gross people out. There's a lot to read, but it's not hard and you usually have a week to read about 20pgs. I always looked forward to his class and never got bored.

He is the best!! He's hilarious and always makes the class fun. His tests are difficult though, but if you do all the readings and complete the worksheets, its ok. take him!!
i never wanted to miss one of his lectures, you never knew what he was going to do or say next. this class is a lot of reading so don't get behind. he really emphasizes certain points in lecture, definitely remember them for the tests!
This class was a bit difficult, but highly enlightening. Dr. Gable's lectures were always fascinating and entertaining. You have to do the readings to excel, but most of them are mildly interesting and the lectures reinforce the main points. This class will change the way you think!
Gable is why I'm now an Anthro major. Brilliant, funny, down-to-earth, and enthusiastic to talk to his students. My words don't do him justice - he really cares about his students. And yes, the class is challenging, but he is extraordinarily helpful and friendly!
I adore this man. Enlightening and hysterical lectures. I'm even thinking about majoring in Anthro now. Take his class!
You take his 101 class, and you think Anthro will be so cool, and enlightening.. and then you take a few more of his classes, and get sick of how flighty he is. He forgets what he tells you, and it changes your grade? That is not cool... but he is WAY better than Huber, that is for sure.
He is a great public speaker (will throw books & curse to be interesting). The reading is not bad when you realize that the details are not that important compared to the argument structures. Just catch the thesis of each article and listen to his lectures and you will be fine. I only took this class for a gen-ed but I actually liked it a lot.
Sometimes the concepts are hard to fully understand. His lectures sometimes jump around but overall I found this class to be VERY interesting and thought-provoking. A lot of reading but what you take away from it is worth it. I love Gable and hearing about his past experiences and theories on culture. Great professor.
His lectures are a bit confusing because he sort of jumps all around the place. However, he is a very fair grader and it is difficult to at least not get a B in the class if you do the readings. You dont even need to go to all of the lectures because he puts a lot of useful stuff on blackboard.
hahaha!! i took gable for anthro 101 way back in 2000 and his teaching style sounds the same as ever. also, it's good to know he's still HOTTT! i had the biggest crush on him back then. :p
Great class, Gable is very intelligent, fun to listen to, and really makes you think. I looked forward to class, very entertaining, you never know what is coming next. Not the easiest class, but i definatelyrecommend it anyway- so interesting. When he says do the readings, he actually means it. If you have problems, go talk to him, he's really nice!
Gable is an exciting professor, very energetic. He'll definitely keep you awake, especially if you have a morning class. Definitely keep up with the reading and ask questions, because he uses both reading and lecture material on tests. He's willing to schedule time to help you if you're struggling. Nice guy and it's an interesting course!
You can always count on Gable's class to be interesting! Since anthropology often uses sex to relate between cultures, its easy to see why!
The material is VERY interesting...Tests are tough ;(
My favorite class! Gable was enlightening, hilarious, and extremely intelligent. As long as you aren't hugely lazy and do most of the readings, you can do fine. Cultural Anthro is only as hard as you make it to be. Tests were mostly multiple choice with a few short essays, which he discussed in class anyway. Highly reccommended.
This was a great class. I really recommend it. The professor has amazing lectures that are so interesting. As long as you keep up with the reading and you go to class and take notes on his lectures, you should do fine.
Prof. Gable is a great lecturer who knows his stuff. It's a great intro course, but be sure to attend the lectures as a lot of the material on the tests is taken from them. The class does require work but is overall work taking.
One favorite professors at the university, and I'm not even that into anthro. His lectures are extremely interesting and really funny- I looked forward to going to his class! Not a terribly hard class, and he's very helpful outside of class.
He's an ok teacher, but he likes to use some stories or explanations just for their shock value. One day he spent 30min talking about the cultural implications of the way men pee, & acted it out.Attendance isn't taken, and I skipped class half the time and still got B+.Only read one book too. His notes on the board were confusing and hard to read.
Professor Gable is awesome. He loves to talk but definitely wants to hear your ideas. He loves debate in his classroom. He's incredibly entertaining and makes going to class surprisingly easy. There are quite a few readings, but if you get the main ideas down you'll be alright. I'm expecting a relatively easy A.
Large lecture class (100+ students). The class may initially seem scattered, but the method to Gable's madness should eventually become apparent IF you're paying attention. Focus on "big picture" ideas and what's actually important to his individual lectures.
The class requires a lot of reading and the readings do need to be done to participate in class. Sometimes, randomly, he'll call on people to see if they did the reading. Do the reading and it'll be okay. He's absolutely fabulous.
Great teacher. expalains things clearly. easy grader in this entry level class. loves the material but doesnt necessarily expect you to share that love. a lot of reading, but a lot of it is unnecessary. He cares more about you learning the material than grading you. there is seriously no way to fail this class.
This professor is all over the place when it comes to taking notes during lecture. If you don't like to read 1,000 pages a night ...wouldn't recommend this class. :)
A lot harder than I expected for an intro class. very interesting though. A LOT of reading required. The paper is pretty much a guaranteed A, but the exams are kind of hard and if you ask about a question , he isn't very good at explaining it. Some multiple choice questions are poorly worded and have multiple or no right answer (in my opinion)
he's one of the most interesting teachers i've had at umw, but i got a terrible grade in his class, because the reading requirements are insane. it's pretty intense for an intro level class, but the material is incredibly interesting.
I really don't like him. He just babbles on and makes no sense at all! He barely even can keep his thoughts straight! I read the readings which are a lot. Also, he can't write well which is bad since we have to read a lot of his work. I just want to get a red pen and grade his papers and hand them in the grammar, spelling etc.. is just so bad.
Gable is a very engaging professor. If you pay attention in class, and do the readings, you'll do well. The concepts he addresses are made crystal clear, and he takes the time to answer questions thoroughly. He is also very helpful if you wish to talk with him during his office hours. He's exceptional! Great class!
I don't know what is so hard about this class. Gable exposes you to abstract concepts that might make people who have a closed mind uncomfortable but if your willing to have some perceptions altered take this class! There is a lot of reading but as far as being tested on it, you only need to skim it to do well. A great class! A great prof!
I think that this class was definitely an eye-opener; if you have a closed mind you may have difficulty with this class. Fairly easy grader, but there was a lot of information covered. Very engaging lectures. One of the best classes I've taken here!
Absolutely hated this class. Rather than learning any real or useful information, we learn about his experiences and his interpretations and read mostly from HIS unpublished and poorly written manuscript. He comes off as very arrogant and makes assumptions and misinterpretations about and of things and then teaches those things as facts.
Heavy on the readings. Fun class but he makes alot of over assumptions about things. It was interesting but I hardly agree with half of what he said. Swears alot and said nearly every girl dressed like a man cause it was bad to be a woman. Madonna song quote perhaps?
He is such a great teacher. Prof G really opened my eyes and now I want to be an anthropologist. Loved his anecdotes and his use of colloquialism helped put the material context I could understand. I love this man!
I really enjoyed this class. As long as you read (admittedly, there is a lot of reading) and pay attention in class, you will do fine. Some people find it difficult to decide what to take notes on in class, but as long as you pay attention to the bigger picture, you'll be fine.
great prof. if you're closed-minded, you wont like the class. he doesn't just say things like, "it's ok to marry your cousin, boys can give bjs to men," etc. he's describing the practices of their particular cultures, and saying they're are the norms in those places. If you read and pay attention to what he's actually saying then you'll get it.
Gable was my advisor all through college, and he's the reason I continue to miss school! He's funny, entertainign and intelligent. I bcame an anthro major after Curtis Ryan left the Int'l Affairs dept. There weren't very many interesting classes at the time, I hope that has changed but probably not. Take this class you won't regret it!
dr. gable was a really good teacher and brought a subject that i had previously not liked very much into a subject that i will probably continue to read about. good class!
Professor Gable is sometimes fun to listen to in class, but it's difficult to get much out of the lecture. He bounces around without much direction and expects everyone to follow exactly what he's saying. It's really important to read the text, but it's incredibly dull. It's hard to sift through it for a whole semester. I wouldn't recommend it.
Gable took a little getting used too. I actually really disliked his class for a few weeks but then grew to become actually interested. Just pay attention to lectures and do the reading and you're fine. and just do the paper. you get an a just for completion
Anthro 101 was really interesting. Lots of reading, but otherwise it was pretty easy. The exams are always lighter than you think they'll be. Gable makes it easy to pay attention, and the book he wrote is actually really insightful. I'd recommend the class for sure.
He's a quirky guy who can either be extremely entertaining in lecture, or boring and repetitive. Looking back if i had read the assigned readings when they were assigned and not the week before the test it would've been my easiest class.
Very approachable, knows his stuff, open to new ideas and discussions.
I don't know why people complain so much about this course. It's not bad. A lot of reading though. Some of the readings are actually interesting if you take time to do them. There is a 250 word essay due every week. Overall this class was pretty easy. Just attend lectures and take narrative notes. He likes it when students engage in lectures.
The Lectures are really important to pass the class. However, there is a lot of reading.
My least favorite class I've taken so far. He doesn't make any sense, talks about whatever inappropriate thing crosses his mind and I still couldn't tell you what his class was about. Also, him and those damn lights, geez.
Professor Gable is very nice but his class is so boring. And his assignments are very tedious. You need to know so much information for the tests. Make sure you do the assignments. Read the chapters he points out and you'll do great. I recommend taking a class other than ANTH 101 to fulfill a GEN ED.
I found Prof Gable to be very grounded and knowledgeable. He was always willing to help you through difficult concepts or offer career advice. He had an anecdote that directly related to any question posed in class and as long as you participate, you're fine. One of the most straight-forward professors I had.Pay attention and you'll love his classes!
Gable is eccentric but also pretty funny and helpful. Not gonna lie, there is a lot of reading for an intro class but if you do that, you'll be golden. Tests are not that bad, especially since they are based off the readings.
This class is relatively easy. You really just have to skim the readings, show up, and take notes. The class can be dull, but he tries to be funny and make it interesting. I never studied and I managed to get a B for the semester.
Gable is an eccentric, brilliant, reclusive atheist. He definitely goes on tangents that would make more sense if you were in his sphere but they are not incomprehensible. He is quirky and friendly. Large class, with a subject probably better taught in a smaller group.
Gable is an extremely interesting teacher. His lectures can be very scattered but overall they were very informative. This class has made me actually step back and reevaluate my values and choices. I am very grateful for this class and Dr Gable's knowledge. Reading before the lectures is very important to pass.
Gable is a very interesting professor, I had him for into to anthropology and it was a good gen ed. If the class does badly he curves the exam and makes sure that you don't fail. The lectures are kind of tedious but he attempts to keep it as interesting as possible. If you go to class and take notes you will get a B.
Gable is an interesting person to listen to, but his lectures are all over the place. It's hard to take notes because he doesn't necessarily specify which of the many random things he talks about will show up on the exam. Plus side: he wants to help and offered makeup points when people bombed the first exam. Also, only one exam plus the final.
Gable is all over the place so you have to take notes and sort it out later. I didn't read much of the readings, but if you go to every class and understand the main points of each lecture you'll do fine. Everyone bombed the first test so he let students do corrections and reach up to a C so if you have a C you're out of luck.
He's such a great professor and is fantastic and relaying really useful information in applicable ways, I loved his intro class enough to make anthropology one of my majors. He's fantastic and this class is informative and easy whether or not you want to be an anthro major.
You won't learn anything.
When he assigns papers to write, he asks you to answer very difficult questions to the point where you don't understand what he is even asking. He is also a hard grader and has a short essay due almost every week
He has so much great stuff to say and clearly knows so much and is passionate about what he teaches. He seems to be care so much about teaching and that care for how students fare in his classes and even post grad if you continue with anthropology is apparent in like every interaction. He's just so cool i love him
I really enjoyed Dr. Gable's classes during my time at UMW (was MWC when I attended)--he was always animated and a very fair grader and just seemed like a decent/nice guy overall. Unfortunately couldn't say that about all professors at UMW/MWC at the time, but he was one of the good ones for sure.
Although he's very passionate about what he teaches, his lectures are very dry and it's easy to zone out during them. It's important to note that you need to do the reading to do well and you have to actually understand what you read rather than skimming for a general idea.
I sat in the front row of his anthro class and he was so soft-spoken I could barely hear him. Super interesting material, but the teaching and lecture was boring and monotone. Not much to be graded, so it's easy for grades to slip.
Lectures are very dry. Drones on a lot about off topic things, only rely on the texts for whats important. Really don't need to go to class to pass if you do the readings.
He is one the best lecturers I have ever hear from. Very interesting class and overall great professor.
Professor Gable was very knowledgeable and made the class very entertaining. The class lectures were very interesting and made you listen intently. By far one of the best professors at UMW!
Professor Gable is a real gem in the Anthropology department. He is very knowledgable and helpful. He is one of the best professors I have had here at UMW. 10/10 reccomend
Dr. Gable is the best professor at UMW and the reason I'm an anthropology major. His lecture style is pretty old-school, so you aren't going to get any powerpoints with all the test answers. You actually need to go to class and do the readings. If you do at least one of those things, you should get an A. He literally gives you the test to study.
Gable assigned his own textbook. 25-50 pages of reading for every class. Grades were determined by 5 discussion posts, 1 exam, 1 paper, and 1 final. He is a much better lecturer than discussion leader, and the class discussions were always very tense and awkward. I did not enjoy going to this class because of this. He did give study guides!
This professor likes to prop up Thomas Jefferson. He will show images of scarred bodies, decapitated heads, and will continually refer to groups of people as the derogatory words used by the society that meant to demean them. He is not evil, or bad, but he does not articulate his thoughts well. If you are fine with this, he's the professor for you.
Gable is an excellent professor, cares about his students and gives great advice to students for upcoming projects or assignments. He is easy to reach outside of class, during office hours or through email. He responds to emails rather quickly which is always a great quality for a professor.
Dr. Gable is a very intelligent professor. He assigns two books (one which he has authored) and online readings. If you do not understand the readings, lecture is where you can ask questions and better understand them. You need to have a good understanding of the material to do well. For grading-5 short answer(out of 10), two midterms and a final.
Pretty boring class. Very rigorous for a 101 level course. Lots of reading and only assessments go towards your grades. He seems like a fun guy but his lectures are very boring slideshows of just pictures and his test questions are wordy and confusing. An hour and fifteen minutes feels so much longer than it should in this class.
Professor gable has very easy to understand lectures and hes not a very tough grader. Professor gable is understanding if issues come up and will let you turn in work late if you need to.
Class was extremely confusing. Only take course if you are dead set on being an Anthropology major because the topics are super confusing. I sat in class and did not understand a single world. Was reflected in my grade, but would not recommend for anyone trying to get Gen Ed done.
I have taken three of professor Gable's classes. He is not the easiest to understand in lecture and this is well known among major students. But he is extremely understanding and has a ton of knowledge to give. If you are looking for an easy 101 class Intro to Cultural Anthropology with Gable is not going to be an easy A.
He is a respected professor and very knowledgeable about his discipline. Lots of murky topics are made clear through copious (if carefully curated) readings and diagrams. I highly recommend this class if you want to actually learn something.
Mr. Gable is awesome, I am taking more anthropology courses because I liked it so much. Lecture heavy but easy note taking. Tests: Half easy multiple choice, half pick one of three prompts to write a short essay about using the anthropologist lens. You learn to think like an Anthropologist and it's awesome to attend his lectures.
Uses a textbook he wrote which is full of loosely connected and confusing stories. Racist terminology left and right, refers to indigenous people as "savages" near constantly even when speaking in a modern context. Lectures contrived and obnoxious. Had to drop within the first week.
Professor Gable is a well respected professor and has quickly become one of my favorites. He's a very chill guy that will answer all your questions. He did make us get his book but to his credit, the book is interesting. His Canvas page can look messy and he sometimes speaks in riddles but you learn to understand his language eventually.
Interesting guy, if you're not into anthro and just taking it for credit be prepared to be bored. Tons of reading and makes you buy the book he wrote which is pretty funny. Grades pretty hard, not an easy A.
Dropped out of the class first day. Definitely not an intro class unless this is your major god speed with that. Very boring, talks very lightly, and if you need a gen ed this isn't the class for you to take. He went over the assignments and the work is more suited for a higher level class not an introduction class. Plus makes you buy his own book
His class is lecture and discussion heavy, if you want him to like you, do the readings and have comments about them. His biggest flaw is that there were three assignments in this class, two papers and the final, which made it really hard to fluff out the grade. He also has a horrible habit of creating the most vague rubrics known to man.
For a first year class I would not recommend taking this class at all, it is way higher than a first year class and a bunch of reading. Be ready to read for 1-3 hours every class with the amount of readings that are assigned and then sit in class and listen to him talk for the whole class period. Would not recommend this class.
I found the experience frustrating due to inconsistent grading, confusing communication, and a lack of structure. Gives limited feedback. Discussions are often derailed, leaving little chance for student input. The syllabus changes frequently, creating confusion, and assignments lack rubrics. Communication and structure need major improvement.
I enjoyed the content, and Gable was clearly knowledgeable, but he never gave any feedback until after the semester and had no clear grading criteria for anything! Nearly 50% of the grade was from the final essay and exam, which I felt unprepared for having zero feedback going in. Reading quizzes were graded leniently, though.
