gave good notes for test and tests were based on notes. Pretty easy but the 10 page essay due at the end of the semester was a **** to write but it was for the gordon rule part of the course
I took it over the summer, the only thing wrong with that is the classes are like 2 hours and you have to write one really big paper. You cant blame that on him. If i had to say one thing bad about him, it would be that over the summer i took 10 pages of notes everyday, so be ready to write!
Very well clear in giving notes, is willing to help students if in need. Good professor to have if you need a history credit.
his lectures are very thorough and organized. he is very helpful and fair. could not wait to take another class w/ him even though I'm not a istory major.
Hanne is a god in his specific field of study. The Hodgson Book could take a hike, but as an educator on a very difficult and complicated subject, Prof. Hanne is one of the best. Take it from me, if given the opportunity, take one of his classes. This is f
The only B I have ever gotten--all A's otherwise. Class is HARD. Lots of reading. He gives an outline for the exam, but even when essays are full of dates, names, and concrete facts, full credit is still not given. Class is interesting, but VERY hard. I attended every class, took good notes, studied a lot, and still walked away with a B.
He is a very good professor. The exams are pretty easy. The TA's help you out on the paper that you have to write for the class.
Easy class, easy notes, easy tests. I could listen to him lecture on and on. He was interesting and never boring.
Best teacher ever! I loved him. He is smart, very knows alot about the middle east, loves to teach, and he is very helpful. But not easy!
The tests are long but he gives you an outline with everything that is going to be on the test. He's knows his subjects really well, he's very nice and is always there if you need help. I reccommend taking his class.
Great professor his class is very interesting. And the stuff he actually lectures on is on the exams. I would recommend this course.
A good teacher with a passion for his field of study. He is not easy so you might accidentally learn something if you are not careful. He always wants the last word though, and you will rarely be completely correct.
I dont think he's that knowledgeable. He's more philosophical and biased. His exams constitute some long essays and the problem is that he is one of those who dont like giving A's even if you cover the major points.
Greatest prof. ever. I loved his class and i am taking another. He is not easy but you will do well as long as you take notes and study. He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches.
Very helpful teacher who is happy to answer questions and passionate about what he teaches. Tests are taken directly from lecture so you will do really good if you go to every class and take good notes. Dont bother to buy the book becasue you will never use it. Overall it was a good class and I encourage people to take it.
Took him for hist mod mid east. great teacher. If you really want 2 learn subj, take his class. Easy grader.
Great professor if your interested in learning.. he lectures from powerpoints which can confuse you when you take notes so its best to simply listen to his lecture and write key words from his powerpoint when he mentions them... got an A on the first test and so far an A on all the papers... just pay attention and write papers based on what he asks
Professor Hanne is good professor. i like he class a-lot. it was good. he teach e-z o ya!!! but hey, i got a 400 on my SAT so wat do i no?? de-de-de!!!
Professor Hanne's classes are more like a 1 hour story on history. he does not teach boring and monotonous classes, but rather, tells you a story about a time period in history. if you have intellect yourself, and enjoy learning about history in a broad manner, then you will like his class. take very detailed notes though! test are general in subj
Took professor Hanne for history of Islam. He is exremly knowledgable, and his lectures were seldom dull. While it is difficult to score a high A on his essay tests, he tend to factor in participation. Challenging, but worthwhile. Oh, he tends to have a slight liberal bias regarding any assumptions regarding Islam, but balanced overall.
This was a tough class to get an "A". Tests were tricky(multiple choice) and the Papers were graded really hard. Class was too hard to be interesting, it's ashame. Advice, pick a good TA, they grade your papers.
Don't buy the textbook - it's useless. you'll need the primary source reader to pass. My advice is to study the maps, TAKE GOOD NOTES (THE TESTS ARE BASED ON THE LECTURES), AND BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE WRITING LAB BECAUSE YOU'LL NEED TO DO A GOOD JOB ON YOUR PAPERS........... THAT'S WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO PASS THE CLASS, PICK A GOOD TA AND STUDY!!
Overall, he's a good teacher. Uses everyday speech to teach history which helps in understanding, especially if you are new to islamic history. His tests are on the harder side so you need good notes in order to get answers. The tests are from the notes, not the book(s). They are just there to accompany his lectures. Good Prof, I liked him.
Dr. Hanne is a terrific professor. He gives great lectures and makes the subject matter interesting. He is a liberal leaning person, so if you are conservative you may get a little frustrated when he makes social commentary. Overall I would highly recommend him.
Hanne is by far the best history professor at FAU. He is knowledgable and fair, and is really interested in what he teaches. Very easy tests, and barely any assignments outside of discussion. His papers are research related, but he lets you do basically whatever you want. So worth the money. I highly recommend this guy!
Dr. Hanne's lectures are incredible, but they are essentially in narrative form. They are so chock-full of information that taking notes is sometimes difficult. He is not afraid to cover politically "taboo" history, such as the United States' involvement in ousting Mossedegh. He gives essay tests, but is a fair grader. This is quality instruction.
Great Professor. Amazing lecturer. Information was kind of dull but he was clear in explaining everything. Well balanced class. He uses intelligent humor.
Best teacher i've had so far... speaks Arabic as far as i can tell which i think is extremely impressive. Seems more like the teacher you'd find at a real tier-1 school, not a joke of an institution like FAU
hes a good professor. tests come right from his notes and are fairly easy if u went to class & really listened to him .. essays are graded by TAs & that takes care of most of ur grade
As aforementioned DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK! You will literally never use it. Dr. Hanne supplies notes that will be covered on the exams. But what reall matters is who your TA is. Pick an easy TA who will grade loosely and be helpful and you will pass.
Excellent teacher! Intelligent, knows a lot about the subject and makes it interesting. His exams are based on his lectures - the textbook is a waste of money. 60% of the class is a research paper, so as long as you have a good T.A. and you write good notes based on his lectures, you should do fine in this class.
Dr. Hanne is amazing. Hes smart, funny and personable. Made the subject interesting and relevent. He expects you to listen and pay attention..basically to do your job as a student. Take good notes. little need for text books.
he is very fair and if you want to do well he will help you. i am not good at note taking so it kept me from getting an A. his test come from lecture notes. it is important to get a fair TA for discussion because they grade your papers and that is where the majority of your grade is. he is willing to meet with students to help with papers.
This guy is the worst professor at FAU. He made my experience in his class not only horrrrrrible but he also made me decide to change my major because I don't want to see him ever again. Avoid at allll costs!!!!
Great professor. I would and am taking Hanne again for his middle eastern studies class. His enthusiasm is great and REALLY knows his information. Papers and exams are NOT difficult. It's college, you're supposed to study and spend quality time on your work.
took Hanne for Ottoman history and he may be my best professor yet. He barely needs his notes because he knows the narrative so well so no mundane powerpoints! Only people who would rate him badly are thsoe who were expecting an easy A.If you don't attend, show interest or study your gonna do bad - he doesnt hesitate to flunk the slackers
Great professor but you will need to pay attention in class. Take notes and when its time for a test use flash cards, If you dont like his class you either didnt want to EARN your grade or had no interest in the class. Dont bother buying the books
This class may not be an easy A, but its deff an easy B+. A lot of the info is new, so make sure you take notes in class & reading the book is a must for discussion. His grade is based off of a take home final and a take home midterm--both of which are essays. The content is really interesting and he's an amazing prof.
Explains things really well. I loved the class. He was a tough grader, but he is willing to read papers before you submit them for grading so u can get better grades. I would deff take him again.
took him for senior seminar b/c i had him for Ottoman history before and really enjoyed it. the seminar was a little disappointing though; lots of reading (mostly irrelevant to the final paper and looong boring discussions. i still think hes a great teacher but he might want to change the lesson plan for this one
Dr. Hanne is an extremely knowledgable professor. His lectures did get a bit boring at times because the class was 3 hours long. The worst part of the class is the research paper but it is a requirement for course so there is no way aroundit. Test come straight from lectures. Cant wait to take him for a Non western history class!
Easiest summer class ever. Only 1 paper (ten pages) but that's instead of writing 10 other papers. Attendance isn't mandatory at all, BUT his tests are word for word his lectures, so taking notes is extremely helpful. Only 3 tests. Didn't use the book except for the section that the research paper was on. I would totally take another class w him
Excellent professor, probably one of the best at FAU. Tests are of aveage difficulty, and grades generously on essays. MUST do the reading to keep up, the time period he covers requires it. Very knowledgable, and funny!
great class, a little boring at times but Hanne is a great professor. i never even opened the book for the class but i am still getting an A. We only had a midterm, 10pg paper, and final so you have to do well on all of them cuz there is NO extra credit
awesome teacher. I never knew anything of ottoman empire and he made it so interesting. not too much work, midterm, final and two papers. the papers aren't that hard. I'm taking him again in the spring for modern middle east. I'd suggest taking him, amazing teacher
I went in not knowing anything about the middle east and it was difficult to keep up with lectures. He lectures with no visual and expects you to write everything he says. I ended up withdrawing (1st time EVER). His exams (2) are essay form and very specific. There is also 1 paper and a project. I wouldn't recommend unless you know the subject well
test are right from lectures listen carefully, good luck during summer 10 pg paper on thing garunteed you don't know , too me 23 hours to write it
he is a GREAT Professor! Seriously just go to class, listen and take notes on your laptop from his powerpoint. His tests are staright from what he discusses from the powerpoints word for word. There is a 10 page research paper but its really easy to get done. Oh and also, a very good looking guy!!!
Hanne is hilarious and a fantastic teacher. He makes everything so interesting and fun. The tests are pretty simple as long as you pay attention to his lectures in class. He's willing to do a review before the tests, which really help. One of the best professors at FAU.
He is such a great teacher. It is not easy to take a class that lasts 3 hours but he is still make the class nice and fun. I would love to have him again. His tests are very fair, quite easy. And he looks better in real life than in the pic here.
Fantastic professor. Interesting, humorous, and exciting lectures combined with a willingness to dispense his office time liberally creates an environment conducive to learning. His passion for Medieval and Islamic History is contagious. My favorite history prof so far.
Dr. Hanne is a very knowledgeable professor, his class was engaging and fun. Sometimes his lectures were a bit draggy but the information provided was clear and very helpful. He was very helpful with the whole class and he is very approachable. I would take a class with him again.
Very boring class!! but it is easy. He tests on very specific details so review all the small facts that you wouldn't expect to be important. Also he jumps around a lot on his lectures and is very disorganized. I do not like his teaching style personally.
I did not care for him as a professor. His lectures are extremely boring and hard to pay attention too. He jumps around a lot and mixes up topics. His tests are solely based on his lectures so make sure you go to class. Overall the class is easy but not worth taking.
Very snazy dresser and extremely professional. Overall good professor don't listen to his rants about failing his tests equal failing the class even with good writing. You don't need the book just access code. He is great at lecturing but I had him at 8 AM..painful. I did well on writing and did very well in the class go to discussion sections!!!!!
He is very friendly and passionate about history. Get an easy TA and participate, they will grade your papers easier. I did half of the learnsmarts, got A/B's on the exams(only studied for first), and got A's on every paper. Attend every lecture. His test questions do not come from text or powerpoints, only from what he says. Lectures can be boring
Entered the course dreading it, ended up loving it. Dr. Hanne is a great professor. Having a fair TA is beneficial to your grade. 3 tests based almost solely on his PP lectures (take notes on what he says about the bullets, not just the bullets). Homework points are based on completion /timeliness. I highly recommend WOH2012 for non history majors.
Probably the best history professor at FAU. His lectures were always interesting. He seems to have a sense of humor. Relatively easy grader.
The class exceeded my expectations. There were a lot of lectures and plenty of writing assignments but Dr. Hanne is more than fair. He returns your papers within a week and gives plenty of feedback. You need both textbooks and attendance is 25% of the grade. Great class overall.
I took him in the summer and it was pretty easy. He did grade essays relatively hard, but you get revision drafts for grades and those he graded really easy. People say his tests are hard, but they are NOT. If you go to class and take good notes you will get an A. I made over a 100 on every exam. He tests directly from his lecture, so go to class!
Dr. Hanne is a great professor. Exams were lecture-based, and I supplemented my notes with the textbook when I didn't understand something. The discussion part of the class is for the essay, which you're able to choose your topic and research everything yourself. Take good notes and you're good to go.
Worst professor i've had at FAU, and makes the class extremely difficult. 70% of your grade is given by a TA who can choose how they grade every assignment and tend to grade essays very hard. Tests are extremely difficult and professor offers no study guides or study sessions. The essays are unclear and very difficult for non history majors.
I wont lie this class what not that easy but as long as you study and go to class youll pass. He is an extreamly interesting profesor and you will learn a lot.
Also had him for Hist of Islam, and should be a required class for all HIS majors... as 4935 actually is, and he made it fun. Hanne is a good lecturer who encourages feedback, no matter how insightful it is or isn't. Cares about his students, cares about how Islam is perceived in a modern and historical context.
Dr. Hanne has proven to be an exceptional scholar and lecturer. FAU and our students are fortunate to have him teaching at our university.
This class was one of the most interesting I've ever taken. Professor Hanne is amazing. I look forward to taking more classes with him. He's incredibly fair and understanding. It's lecture heavy, but there is quite a bit of reading. Nothing unmanageable, especially if you're a History Major.
His tests are super hard. You need to read the book because the lectures alone will not help you with the exams.
Professor Hanne is an amazing teacher and his lectures are everything. All the questions on the exams are based on the lectures! Although the subject is heavy, the class is doable.
Don't bother buying the textbook. He tells you the first class about it and then the second class states that all of the questions for the test come from his mouth in lecture and the textbook doesn't follow his curriculum. Tests were hard and very specific. even with detailed notes and a class group chat for us to share work it was very difficult.
Grading criteria is quite clear. Flexible if "life happens." The finals and midterms are very fair, everything on the test explicitly laid out in a study guide. Expects you to "marshal the evidence," so don't phone in the papers. Textbooks are companion texts to the lecture. They help provide a complete picture. Read and attendance A.
The professor great he is nice and understanding but the lecture is heavy and beware the test are written and not multiple choice. For the test you basically have to write a paragraph describing certain words and then write an essay which can get tricky.
Took this history course over the summer even though history is not my strong suit and passed with a B. Lots of writing assignments and 3 exams that barely have anything to do with the video lectures, but aren't too hard to pass- extremely boring though if you are not interested in history so I would not take it again
Professor Hanne is very smart, funny, and passionate about the Abbasids. The lectures can be super heavy and it's easy to get lost but ask questions--he will help you understand. Your responses on his exams need to be very clear and detailed so don't think that you can sleep through lecture and pass them.
I enjoyed his lectures and thought they were interesting. I learned a lot and thought his standards were fair.
The class can seem daunting, but if you go to lectures & do the work, you'll be fine. Just start the paper in advance (don't wait until the last minute for it), & be familiar with the readings. If you have questions/concerns, meet with him after class, he's more than happy to help students. The class was very interesting too, & he knows his stuff.
He's incredibly knowledgeable about the topic, and fosters great discussion. His papers might seem daunting, but he provides excellent, substantive feedback. The class' term paper was difficult, but I came out of the class feeling like I learned a lot, and had a great time, too!
Dr. Hanne is a little old school, but overall a very great professor. A little bit more of a tough grader and his classes are usually writing heavy.
I absolutely loved having Mr. Hanne as my Professor. The lectures he gives are in depth, interesting and easy to follow. Make sure to attend every lecture and take notes because the content he gives is most definitely on the tests. The textbook is optional, I personally did not use it and got by fine by just the lectures. 11/10 would take it again!
I have had two calsses with him so far and plan to have more, a great professor who genuinely wants you to succeed and learn.
Professor Hanne is a great teacher. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow. I recommend attending every lecture and taking notes. The class was exceptional, and I would retake it.
All exam questions are based on what he says in lecture. TAKE A LOT OF NOTES. I literally wrote down basically everything he stated word for word, studied that and got over 100 on all of the exams. The paper is a little more challenging to come up with concepts for but as long as you listen to your TA and put the effort in you will get an A.
I've taken 3 classes with Dr. Hanne and hope to take another in the future—he is extremely knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches, his lectures are fascinating, and he is incredibly understanding and caring towards his students. I would absolutely recommend taking Dr. Hanne, regardless of your major, as he is one of the best professors at FAU.
Great professor, clearly explains everything and tells history like it's a drama (in a good way). Come to his lectures, listen, and you'll do well! Also very easy to reach out to.
