Dr. Hastie has been the best biology professor I have had so far at Carolina. He truly cares about getting to know each and every student and is always open to suggestions on how to improve the class. Yes, you have to put in the work in this class to get a good grade, but Dr. Hastie is extremely motivating and his exams were always fair.
Dr. Hastie has been my favorite science professor at UNC by far! He is super funny and really wants to get to know his students, even with a large class size. There are lots of assignments, readings, and lectures, but the tests are fair and he's great about regrades! Hard class, but Dr. Hastie makes it 10x more enjoyable!
I really have enjoyed having Professor Hastie. His lectures are very clear easy to listen to. He is upbeat and funny. His homework assignments are somewhat frequent but not unreasonably hard, just to keep you engaged and thinking about the material. I found his tests very fair, not easy but if you study it's not hard to do well.
Dr. Hastie is AMAZING. He cares about his students so much and wants everyone to succeed. This course is heavy with the workload sometimes, but the tests are super fair if you put in effort to know the material. I highly recommend taking a class with him!
Dr. Hastie has been the BEST professor I have had at UNC. Despite being in a pandemic and everything being virtual, he made sure to make class very engaging. The material for the course was not that hard you just need to make sure you know how to apply the things you learned. He is always accessible outside of class and he is hilarious.
Dr. Hastie was really kind and understanding of his students during this past semester. He genuinely cares about his students' well-being as well as their ability to learn and engage with the material. I did not ever go to office hours or really interact much with him, but he always seemed to make himself available! Would definitely recommend him!
Dr. Hastie is an absolute sweetheart, is so encouraging, and such an amazing professor. He really makes sure that the information sticks in your brain and makes sure that you have a ton of outlets to learn from. He also does amazing at professional development and learning about social issues throughout healthcare which I loved. And case studies!!
Eric is the best professor Ive had in the biology department by a MILE. He is incredibly compassionate and genuinely cares about you doing well in his class. Theres never been a time in which I asked a question in class and didnt get a clear answer. If you take his class, he will 100% provide you with everything you need to be successful.
Hastie is a relaxed professor but be careful. He'll say there's no deadlines for work beyond the exams, but then he will send an email a week before LDOC and change the course policy to partial credit (i.e., forum posts). So do not be fooled. Overall, an easy A but do not slack off too much or his random changes will bite you in the ass.
Dr. Hastie is my favorite professor at UNC. He genuinely cares about you, not even as a student but as a person. As long as you listen to his lectures and read the papers, you will do just fine. I would highly recommend taking a class with him if you can. You really won't find a better professor out there!
One of the sweetest profs Ive ever had at UNC. Lectures can feel overwhelming because he doesnt write anything down and just talks but if you listen youll do well
Dr. Hattie is very caring and kind and makes the course feel more like high-school. The material is very basic and he does not delve into specifics, making me and others feel as though we didn't learn much. If you want to learn about cell development, don't have this professor unless ooking for an easy grade. 2nd half with Dr. Peifer
He is very entertaining but hits topics very shallowly and then asks in-depth questions about them on exams. He is very passionate and loves his students.
Dr. Hastie is an absolute GEM. The bio dept at UNC shines because of him. I wish he could teach all of my classes. He is so enthusiastic about science and teaches in a relatable way. His lectures are engaging and entertaining and he prompts thoughtful discussion in class. He is inspiring and really cares about his students. I appreciate his style.
Class was pretty lecture heavy and his lectures were not organized and structured nicely. It was mostly him asking baseless questions that sometimes he did not even know the answer to. I felt he did not explain things well enough.
A really great guy. I struggled with the first couple of tests (motivation issues) and he reached out and offered suggestions and his help. One of those rare professors who really care that each of the students succeeds. If you read the textbook and glance through his slides you'll be good for the exams (lectures more reinforce the material).
This class was way easier than 252. He made sure the lab sections were super low stress, he allowed us to tune in via zoom if we wanted, and participation was mostly on discussion posts. All tests were online open note, even the final. Hes also just a very kind and funny prof!
I loved Dr. Hastie's class! He was a great lecturer (so funny) and highlighted important material that would be on exams. Participation was not mandatory since COVID was/is still circulating. The exams were SO much easier than 252, it was almost shocking. If you tune into his lectures, take notes, and review material... you'll be golden.
Dr. Hastie is one of the best professors at UNC. The way he structures his class, you will actually learn rather just memorize. If you watch the lectures and take notes, there is no reason to not get a 90+ on his exams. He is very understanding and helps out whenever he can. WAY better than 252, so don't be scared! AMAZING man and professor.
Dr. Hastie is a true gem to be found at UNC - the most caring professor I've ever had. He makes lectures simple and engaging but the exams were a hit or miss regarding difficulty sometimes. Nonetheless, much easier than 252!
Professor Hastie is a wonderful human being. He genuinely cares about his students and is easy to talk to. His lecture style inspired me to speak up in class and challenge myself. He writes tests very fairly and the workload is doable as long as you manage your time well. His positive energy gave a great learning environment and I'll miss him!
Dr. Hastie is the best. His lectures are engaging and he interacts with students and answers questions during lecture. Office hours are at least twice a week and there are also many peer mentors with review sessions. If you're taking a bio class, definitely take Hastie's. #centraldogma
Take Biol 103 and Biol 105 at the same time. The information often overlaps and you'll be glad to already know what's going on - Biol 105 is more application than teaching, so it'll be rough if you don't have a good foundation. Cool, elementary experience w/ research software. Easy to maintain a high grade and so many chances to get higher scores.
Hastie really loves his life and is very interesting. But the grading criteria is confusing and wasn't stated clearly, lots of students lose the chance to A because of this and don't have chance to make up.
The guidelines for grading in this course are strict and there is no way to make up assignments that if missed prevent you from an a. The weekly group projects are confusing and you are put into a random group every week. Hastie is very interested in what he is teaching and is very kind, but the class could definetly use some better instructions.
Dr. Hastie is a really engaging lecturer and encourages participation with stickers. The lowest test grade is dropped at the end of the semester, but the tests are graded off of just a few questions that, personally, I felt were always worded to trip you up. There are almost always 4 homework assignments every week that take about 1 hour each.
His online lectures were very clear and great, but the homework can be difficult. You are put with a different group for group projects every week which can be a little rough to work with. Overall though you will learn a lot about scientific techniques and it aligns really well with BIOL 103 if you take both at the same time.
Dr. Hastie is really funny and honestly such an amazing person!! Just get ready to learn a whole lot of information super quick but thats all BIO 101 classes. He also allows a cheat sheet on the exam which is so helpful and reduces exam anxiety especially if this is your first year at Carolina. Just show up to class ready to learn!
Professor Hastie is very passionate about what he teaches. The class was very easy, however, since there is a group project every week it can be difficult to find times to meet up with your members. He offers chance for extra help and extra credit if confused.
The class itself was pretty boring and unorganized. I dont really think it was Hastie's fault though, this was the first semester it was offered. Group projects every week
I had Dr. Hastie for bio 101, so it wasn't very hard if you have taken any biology in high school. we had an assignment due before every class, but they weren't very long. I think the participation points and homework killed me more than the actual content. He's really funny and chill
Dr. Hastie is very nice and seems funny, but its just the way the course is laid out that is difficult. Having to meet up with a new group every week and figure out everyone's schedule was exhausting but the work wasn't that difficult itself.
Amazing lectures. You will have weekly group projects with random students until it's time to work on your final project. The homework can be difficult at times but he is accessible outside of class!
TONS of group projects. Hastie wants you to find the answer which makes it hard to ask him questions about grading material etc., especially since it's an online class. He is a super nice and caring guy which makes it nice to learn from him. I recommend doing the pre-health modules. This class sets you up really well for future STEM majors!
Hastie is a nice guy, but okay teacher. His instructions are very vague, and although he gives opportunities to boost your grade with resubmissions, it's a bit difficult to ask for help when you need it. If you need help, definitely don't wait for the last minute because you will probably get a vague, passive-aggressive email
Biol105L is easy, but part of our grade is peer reviewed so some people were strict graders for absolutely no reason. (hated them fr) Dr. Hastie is really nice and very accessible (answers emails quickly and office hours). Group projects every week was hard to set up. I think bcuz this class was online, it was very vague and not really engaging.
This class was pretty easy, but Dr. Hastie could be very passive aggressive and condescending when people asked for help. There's a rubric for all your assignments, and get ready to do lots of peer reviews and group projects. I personally liked how grading was done. Every week, there's a Zoom call, discussion board, and scientific report.
my rating was cut off for some reason. RMP maybe doesn't like special characters, so cont: ...2 hours before grades were due. The feedback wasn't fair, but Dr. Hastie sided with the TA, and imo both were very unprofessional.
Dr. Hastie was awesome. While there are a few things about the class that aren't ideal, & his lectures can feel a bit unproductive at times, he's a really funny guy who really cares about his students. He's also super accessible during office hours, & is super willing to chat or help you out with questions. He helps make this huge class feel small.
I really like Dr. Hastie and his lecturing was great. However, this class was designed poorly. I don't blame it on him since this was the first semester it was offered, however the group projects with random people every week was very annoying. Honestly this class greatly depends on peer reviews and his quizzes which are open note but worded weird.
No readings were required for lecture, he would have us do GSQs (guided search questions) before class instead. Used lots of pictures during his lectures and then would allow time for us to talk through some of the material with neighbors. Find someone to sit next to in the beginning of the semester and stick with them.
Hastie is great. I had him as a teacher + research advisor. Very accessible, open to answering questions, has clear exam questions, and really wants his students to succeed.
I really enjoyed Hastie's lectures! He always seemed like he wanted to be there and was very enthusiastic about the material. I loved how he challenged us to relate things we learned to real world issues. The tests were fair and he let us have a "cheat sheet" on every exam.
Of all the departments, biology has the nicest professors. Hastie is so caring and gave us back so many points on tests. I was so surprised to see the grade distribution at the end of class. So many As and A-s. The final was a joke and he gave us 5 extra credit points too. Midterm 1 is tricky but 2 and 3 are slight. Enjoy UNC STEM while its easy.
Such an amazingly caring professor. He makes students feel validated, yet he doesn't let them walk over him. He grades his exams fairly (albeit writing them with several typos). I highly suggest taking him if you can. My only suggestion is that you do not overthink the exams. He sticks solidly to the learning outcomes!
Felt like we only ever scratched the surface about anything. Talked about things in shallow depth, powerpoints were barren, and no readings so felt like there was no structure. His section of recitation is incredibly stupid. But really nice guy, cares a lot, and did not think the exams were hard at all.
I loved this class! He really wants his students to succeed and the exams align well with his lectures. If you do the homework and attend class this class will be great!
Professor Hastie is a really great person and he shows a lot of passion for the class. For a 1 credit class, it was a lot of active work and the requirements were strict, but nothing impossible. You really do learn a lot and build strong skills in this class if you put in the expected effort!
Highly recommend taking bio 101 with Hastie. He constantly keeps students engaged and is witty and humorous. Tons of resources available in and out of class and homework/assignments are relevant to the content and lead to further understanding. Taking his 105 lab next semester and cant wait
The material taught in class was not difficult, but there was a lot of work for a 1 credit hour class. There were online quizzes every 2 weeks and the questions were worded weirdly in a way that was very open to interpretation (so you sometimes made mistakes because of wording). Dr. Hastie is nice but very passive-aggressive.
Exams reflected the material he taught, most lectures used real life examples so they were sometimes boring
Dr.Hastie is overall a great professor. He teaches the class well, is caring, funny, and understanding. There are tons of resources provided to help you understand the course, and he tries to interact with as many students as he can. He truly cares about teaching and helping as many students as he can succeed. Overall a great class and professor!
Dr. Hastie was a spectacular Biol101 professor, understanding that it was the beginning biology course and providing pointers on more complicated topics to make sure we understood them for the test. It is a big lecture class but the course has TA and PM sessions, and Dr. Hastie has office hours every week if you needed to ask any questions.
Dr. Hastie is an amazing professor. He cares for his students and tries to help as much as he can. His lectures are very interesting and allow you to engage with your classmates. Office hours are very flexible and he can also work with you if his office hours are not good for you. Peer mentors are very helpful. Use all of your resources!
Professor Hastie wasnt super organized or clear, but I liked having group work to meet people in my major.
Dr. Hastie made bio 101 so much fun. I always enjoyed going to his class. Lectures tend to get tedious at times, but Hastie is so hilarious. I had an A in this class, but I didn't study much for the final and did badly. Tests are relatively easy and straightforward, but make sure to study! I recommend going to office hours just to get to know him!
Dr. Hastie did a very good job with this course considering I took it last semester which was the first time it was offered I believe. He did a great job of getting the material across and helping if one did not understand. The assignments weren't too hard although sometimes it seemed like the harder ones were given in shorter time to complete.
Professor Hastie is genuinely one of the funniest and most enjoyable professors I have had. He makes lectures super interesting and relates the topics to current events to help you understand (especially COVID). I would definitely recommend him to anyone needing to take any BIOL courses that he teaches.
Dr. Hastie was a great professor, he made the lectures fun and interactive. However, the weekly group projects were kinda annoying since we got new groups every single week (I had him in fall 2022).
Dr. Hastie was great for 105L! He gave us lots of opportunities to boost our grades and let us resubmit projects to improve our scores.
I'm not sure how this man became a professor. Says he is "big picture" but asks specific questions on exams. RUN
Dr. Hastie is such a kind soul who deeply cares about his students. I took BIOL 105L with him last semester and really enjoyed the concepts taught. Although, we had group projects every week with different groups each time. Those were kind of frustrating, but overall I learned so much in this class.
Group projects are frequent and can be very annoying if you end up in a bad group. The grading system is a bit different than usual, and there are 1-3 assignments weekly. The final project is alright as long as you don't procrastinate. The lectures were boring if you have taken BIOL classes before, and the quizzes were easy.
Dr. Hastie was an amazing professor for 253. His lectures encouraged student participation but just discussion based (not like poll ev). Dr. Hastie is super passionate about his students succeeding and truly does care about their success. He was super approachable about grades, concepts, and assignments and made the class super fun.
Dr. Hastie is a funny guy and I like him a lot. That said, 105L is just very annoying as a class. Be prepped to meet outside of class for group projects pretty much every week. The projects feel somewhat useless and repetitive, with generally vague rubrics. Hastie as a guy is very accessible and will answer emails quickly!
Highly recommend Dr. Hastie, best bio professor. He makes class fun and is welcoming to answering questions or discussions. As long as you go to class and do the GRQS you will get a good grade.
A lot of work for a 1 credit class. Only 5 easy but short quizzes. Almost everything is in groups. The instructions aren't super clear though. He didn't give much feedback. The final project was not hard. He is a pretty easy grader. The weekly discussion boards were pretty easy and sometimes interesting. Definitely recommend Dr. Hastie in person.
Took in the fall. Exams can be tough. Lots of GRQs. Definitely need to go to class or view the slides. Recommend a tutor. The online homework wasn't hard. Not a weed out course. Dr. Hastie is a great professor I highly recommend. He's very funny. Gave out stickers. Allows "cheat sheet" on exams.
He was really good and the work was easy.
Dr. Hastie has been one of my favorite professors at UNC so far. He cares so much for his students and will always want to do better and hear stories or questions from many students. He is very knowledgeable and makes you like Biology. Lectures can be long, but he makes sure they are not boring. Dr. Hastie is very accessible if you ever need help.
He seemed nice at first but clearly has a superiority complex. I reached out to ask a question over email (which he was gracious enough to provide an email format for) and he was unnecessarily rude and dismissive. Hastie is just mean. BIOL 105L is a useless class, but I had to take it. The course is messy and often busy work is assigned.
I was expecting Dr. Hastie to be a great professor based on these ratings, but have been extremely disappointed. This course has been a waste of my time and consists of useless group projects every week. If your lab section doesn't have enough students for complete groups, certain students end up with an incomplete group and have to deal with it.
Hastie was talked about highly by my peers so I thought this course would be no problem. But for a 1 credit hour class, I had more work for this class than my other 3-4 hour credit classes. I reached out to Hastie once and was met with rudeness and attitude when I asked for assistance. I will not be taking a class with him again.
I loved this class. The second exam is the hardest but the prof drops your lowest! He's honestly my favourite prof at Carolina so far and he is very engaging. His office hours are flexible and he is approachable. The class is structured so that 3 credits actually feel like 3 credits and you can recover from a bad grade as long as you put in work
Hastie is a wonderful person who gives very hard exams. This is typical for BIOL 101 at UNC so be prepared to struggle with exams and study more than you think you'll need to. Take GRQs/Mastering seriously. Give this class enough study time and take it more seriously than you think because the exams can weigh you down, they're worth 70% grade.
Exams are weighted 70% of final grade, however lowest midterm grade is dropped. All the other assignments for the class are weighted so little, your grades for them barely matter. He is an amazing lecturer and encourages you to really think about and apply the content. He keeps class interesting and is very approachable. Take BIO101 with him!
Great professor, clear grading material, easy tests, funny
I loved Dr. Hastie overall! He was so funny and always made lectures engaging and easy to follow. However, tests are 70% of your final grade but he drops your lowest one! We have at least 4 homework assignments a week but they are super easy! Take BIO 101 with Hastie!
Good class. The exams are fair. They are worth 70% of your grade, but the lowest midterm grade is dropped. Hastie's lectures can get a bit boring, but it is a good class to take.
Professor Hastie does a really good job of teaching the BIO101 curriculum, he uses weekly assignments to gradually build up understanding and his lectures review those readings to clear up any confusions. Tests are good and the questions aren't there to set you up but allow you to apply the things you learn to real world situations. Funny guy also.
Most disorganized person ever. Hella group projects. There's an in person lab for the 1 credit hour online class, BS. A project, discussion post, paper, and lab every week.
105L can be annoying sometimes with the work load but as long as you manage your time its not as much as it seems. Make sure you take it with a friend so that you have a good group, this definitely made group projects 10x easier. Your assignments are graded off your peers and TAs so as long as you put in effort you can easily get an A.
Hastie tries his best to make 101 not a weed out course. His slides are really helpful to review before tests and the course is not bad if you put in some effort to study.
Professor Hastie made Biol 101 more than tolerable - he made it fun. Though it's going to be a hard class no matter who you take it with, his quick wit and happy personality made the lectures entertaining and engaging, and though the tests were difficult, they weren't as hard as they could have been made.
Dr. Hastie is a great professor and his lectures are super engaging. If you do the readings and put the time in to really understand the material you will do fine. The tests are not too difficult and your lowest exam grade gets dropped. Stay on top of the readings and homework assignments to set yourself up for success!
Dr Hastie really enjoys what he teaches which makes class so much more engaging and fun. He really just wants students to try and put forth effort without worrying about getting a bad grade was I appreciate. I learned so much about research and how to approach it because of this class.
Hastie is good, 105L is not. So many lengthy assignments due weekly + zoom meeting (could have been a video) and lab meeting once a week which were a waste of time (could have been group calls). Very unclear rubrics and usually no instructions but everything is peer graded. Easy A but don't take if you don't have to. More work than 3 hour classes.
Professor Hastie made this class very doable. Not too much homework and it was pretty much the same structure every week which made it easy to get ahead and plan for busy weeks. He also provided a lot of resources that helped with studying for tests.
Even though Bio 101 wasn't necessarily the easiest class, Dr. Hastie made getting help very easy! He is very caring and understanding and allows room for error with assignments. There are 3 exams throughout the semester, then one final at the end which is cumulative. Study hard for exams because they make up a large majority of your final grade!
Dr. Hastie was a great guy but I didn't learn a lot from attending lecture at all. The GRQs and mastering was way more useful and all you need to understand to do well on exams. Lecture goes into too in depth on certain concepts or on tangents that you will never be tested on. Overall not too hard of a class if you keep up with the work.
He is the best and makes class very entertaining. In my opinion, the lectures and slides were way better preparation for the exams than the GRQs.
Extreme passive-aggressiveness. 105L is a pretty useless class overall, too. That's not his fault, but he seems nice in lecture until you contact him outside of lecture.
Hastie grades way too hard, passive aggressively, and without leniency for a one credit intro to bio lab. The assignments themselves are easy once you know what to do, but it's hard to figure out what he wants. When taking this course, be sure to read EVERYTHING and scourer canvas to make sure you're doing the assignments right.
Can't believe this is a 1 credit class. One group project each week, as well as discussion post, quiz, and random small things. Grading criteria is not the clearest. His lecture is of minor use but attendance is mandatory. Assignments are easy but instructions are unclear. You receive a 0 for that criterion if you didn't follow the instruction.
He seems like a fun person to be around, but he was not a great professor for BIOL-105L. Much of the time instructions were vague and TA's also didn't know what was going on. His lectures were great, but everything else seemed like a puzzle trying to figure out what we were actually supposed to be doing.
Easiest 253 prof but the class is participation based and you will be called upon and forced to participate, hence why I haven't shown up since the 2nd week of school. words can't describe how much I hate this class. one test dropped, also get cheat sheets, lectures recorded so I just taught myself
The class itself didn't feel tedious, but I could see how the workload seemed repetitive and unnecessary. He was a great professor but could be passive-aggressive in class-wide messages which is very unprofessional. Group projects are core in this course so make sure you have a good group.
Participation not required, & lectures are recorded and put online. GRQs are very straightforward and relate directly to in-class topics. Class is very straightforward, although wording on tests can be a bit tricky. Dr. Hastie is hilarious & encourages and rewards participation in class! He's an awesome professor & definitely cares about students!
BIOL105L is not a difficult class. There are weekly group projects, mostly reviews of scientific research, a weekly lab, but super easy and introductory level, guidelines are super clear in syllabus. All students start at a D and choose to receive whatever grade based on the work completed.
This course is unnecessary. He needs to rework the set up and his policies. You start with a D and have to work your way up which is hard to understand in the Syllabus. I could have ended with an A if the class was more organized and didn't have policies like complete a survey after making up quizzes to get credits that weren't easy understand .
The grade criteria is extremely confusing, but it is possible to do well. This class felt like it was mostly busy work but it does provide you with a few good skills if you want to go into research. For example, learning how to read scientific papers. Hastie is a great professor, but I would only advise taking this class if you're a bio major.
Dr. Hastie was very nice and his lectures were pretty entertaining. The weekly group projects can be difficult though, especially since the requirements are often unclear and even the TAs are unsure what some of the requirements are.
Grading was weird with everyone starting with a D and then working your way up, but the class was structured leniently. I will say during one of the weekly assignments majority of us were not sure what to do because there were no instructions to which we all received a very passive aggressive email about how our semester was essentially lazy.
Dr. Hastie assigns way too much work for a 1 credit class. Almost every week there is a group project, discussion post, and other work I can not recall right now. On top of that, he adds other useless projects that don't relate to research.
Would avoid this professor at all costs. Unfortunately 105L is a mandatory class for Biology majors so I have to suffer through. It's 1 credit hour and has more homework/papers than my other 3 credit hour class.
BO101 was absolutely a mess this year. Not only was Dr. Hastie flat out rude, but he assigned way too much work. We recently went over five units in a week then had an exceedingly difficult exam. Hastie is not only rude, but flat out tells you not to email him and he doesn't want to hear from you. he's funny in group environment, but again SO rude.
Dr Hastie is very funny and tries to explain things in terms that will make it relatable to the students, but this class is a lot of work and by no means easy. I've heard he's rude one-on-one from a couple of people, but I've never had to experience working with/talking to him one-on-one.
Most useless class ever. Take ASAP and knock it out. Already had 3 bios & labs before this. Pointless weekly group projects and poorly clarified grading criteria. Will give you 0s for not following his unclear instructions perfectly. PollEV for attendane can be done at home. Useless lab ever and hours of my life i'll never get back :/
This class builds in most of the studying via its GRQs and Mastery. Dropping an exam is really nice. Few peer mentors knew what they were talking about. BIOCELL teachers understand how to teach BY FAR the best (MUCH MUCH clearer than peer mentors and Hastie). Hastie is really really sweet, but I wasn't amazed by his teaching style. Office Hours!
Pretty mundane course. He can be condescending when you try reaching out to him directly for help. I have only tried to get in contact with him twice and both times I have been met with sassy response and made to feel like I was a nuisance. If you're looking for a welcoming intro level stem course you should avoid this class unless required
Dr. Hastie is a very good professor, but this class is somewhat hard. Anticipate to study a lot.
Dr. Hastie is a good professor and has funny lectures. He outlines from the beginning what you need to do in order to pass. Nevertheless, it is hard to get A's on his test and they weigh 55% of your final grade. while the textbook is necessary for homework, it is not useful for final exams and midterm studying.
Dr. Hastie is funny, engaging, and makes class enjoyable. Attending class is crucial, especially to earn participation points through the Learning Catalytics. The tests are challenging, but if you attend regularly, stay engaged, and pay attention, you'll be well-prepared to succeed.
Dr. Hastie was a good prof for 105L! He is super funny and really cares about the subject. 105L really isn't difficult so long as you show up and put in effort the first time around - he will let you resubmit most things for regrading if you get below a 70.
Dr. Hastie is a kind, brilliant educator who cares deeply for his students SO LONG AS YOU SHOW YOU CARE TOO! Going to his office hours consistently and frequently asking him questions via e-mail made all the difference in my experience with BIO 101. Tests are hard but so long as you study gradually and ask questions, an A is attainable.
Dr. Hastie is amazing!!! Heard BIOL 101 was a weed out class and there were definitely hard concepts but he did an amazing job explaining them. He cares about each student and went over an exam with me individually when I had questions. Great professor.
Professor Hastie seems like a great person, however, he should not be teaching this class. You will be harshly punished for not following his hard to understand instructions to a T. If you try to reach out to him outside of class about his instructions, you will likely get a sassy email back making you feel stupid. DO NOT take unless required.
BIO-101 was definitely a challenging class, but I recommend going to peer tutor sessions, office hours, and BIO-cell for extra assistance. This class covers an array of topics that can be quite confusing, but if you put in the work then you can definitely succeed. Dr. Hastie is an amazing professor that offers many opportunities for clarification!
This class is definitely challenging and test heavy, but it is very doable if you take advantage of the resources offered. The test are 70 percent of your grade, so be prepared to study, go to peer mentor sessions, office hours, and bio-cell. Dr. Hastie is an amazing teacher that is open with meeting with students to explain the tougher material.
Dr. Hastie is a super chill professor! The class is very organized with very little homework. Majority of the learning is done outside the class by reading the textbook, and then Dr. Hastie reiterates the main concepts during lecture. The content is very basic and getting an A is manageable. Great intro course to biology!
This course is heavily centered around group projects so make sure you get a good group (you get to pick). Hastie is passive-aggressive towards us regarding how we couldn't follow clear directions although if that many people are not following them, maybe the instructions aren't as clear as you think. Overal really easy A if you follow the rubrics.
Dr. Haiste was an overall good professor and gave us plenty of chance to increase our grade and better our learning experience. I would encourage attending BioCell with the Robins and the peer mentor meetings to increase your learning experience outside of school.
Dr. Hastie is amazing. He is a great lecturer and engages his students by using real world relations. His exams are not too difficult as long as you pay attention in class. He is sassy, but in the best way.
Tests are not crazy, you just need a basic understanding of what is going on in the concept and be able to apply it to real-world application stuff which isn't too confusing or tricky. There are undergraduate learning assistants that help you understand what is being taught in the lecture. Lectures also provide great practice questions to try.
Majority of the learning is done outside the class by reading the textbook, and then Dr. Hastie reiterates the main concepts during lecture. Exams make up 70% of your grade with the lowest dropped. Exams often had confusing questions with ultra-specific rubrics, often requiring more information than they let on. Impossible to get credit back.
I loved Hastie! He is very sociable, willing to talk, and help you reach your goals. Most of the learning you have to do by yourself using the textbook and GRQ questions. The lectures teach you how to apply to topics which is super important for tests. If you can do that, tests won't be too bad. There are so many resources to help you succeed!
Dr. Hastie is so silly and teaches the material in a very approachable way. As long as you actually spend time doing the GRQs and paying attention class, you will do well in this class with minimal extra effort.
He's chill but a bit too quirky sometimes that its off putting. My biggest regret was missing class because the learning catalytic for attendance can be taken from ur dorm lol. Thats what made my difference between an a and b. seriously, just go to class and you'll be fine.
LOVE HASTIE, im a business major and have no reason to take bio101 but im so glad I did because I learned so much from hastie. he is funny and kind and understanding. if you know how to take tests well, they aren't too hard.
Watch out for trick questions on exams; there are many. The first exam will be the hardest because no matter how much you study, you are underprepared. By the time you get to the last exams, you know what trick words to look for and do better.
The class was hard and his lectures did not teach me what i felt like needed to be taught. He would speak about different topics and things not related to our work or tests. if you can dedicate a lot of time and like to read then you will do fine. the tests are just hard and the study guides do not help with what is actually on the test.
The class can be confusing at times, but Professor Hastie makes it engaging. The weekly group projects can be tricky, but using unstuck study alongside the free textbook really helped me stay on top of things. Overall, a solid bio course.
Dr. Hastie is an amazing professor if you are a freshman taking BIO 101. If you have never taking biology before, it is a lot of material, but its all easy material if you study (plus its interesting). Make sure you stay on top of readings. An A is not unattainable, I regret not studying harder, looking back the tests were not that hard at all.
I would recommend taking another professor. Super nice guy but he structures the class as discussion-based which is just not helpful for anatomy. 75% of the class is "talking to your neighbor about what you think." Also, exams are application-heavy without him going into much detail during class.
Prof. Hastie was super funny, but I think to get the most out of this course you NEED to read the book, use the AI tool to test you on each section, and use outside study tools like Khan Academy. His lectures were funny and similar to the exam questions, but can be confusing if you don't properly do the assigned readings. Forgiving grader though!
The class content itself isn't hard but every assignment felt like busy work. Grades very harshly and will give no credit along with a passive-aggressive comment if you don't follow his extremely unclear expectations. His canvas site is also a nightmare to navigate and makes it very easy to miss assignments.
Worst class and professor I have ever had at UNC. Hastie is the most condescending person ever. He has very unclear grading criteria. For some assignments, you either get an incomplete or complete based on ACCURACY. Hastie makes it worse by thinking he's doing what's best for his students but he's actually driving them away from Biology. Horrible.
Idk if this class was crated by Professor Hastie or he just got put on it, but this class is terrible. Completely irrelevant and a waste of time. The lab is hardly connected to the lectures and the grading policy is made to be frustrating.
Overall, Hastie's lectures are extremely fun and engaging. However, the exams tend to be difficult due to the low number of questions; if you study and pay attention to the readings and lectures, you'll be fine. Hastie uses a reverse classroom, so readings and quizzes are due before every class, on top of homework. Be prepared to set time aside.
He is a wonderful and kind professor. If you ask questions, do your work on time, and use the feedback from grading, you will succeed in his class.
Hastie truly is a super nice guy, but don't pick your anatomy prof just based on that. Slides are messy, in-class teaching is vague, and exams are heavy on application. Half the class is peer discussion, and students often explain concepts instead of him. The structure doesn't support solid learning. You can succeed but only by teaching yourself.
Where do I start. Hastie is wonderful by himself, however this class is piss poor. Easy but w/lots of busy/group work combined with his high expectations, passive aggressive comments,& a sharp eye for any mistakes (be careful). Also awful, unmotivated, & clueless TA's who had little knowledge of content & begged not to ask Hastie for clarification.
Dr. Hastie truly wants his students to succeed. He outlines everything that you need to know in class and the assignments help a lot. The tests are super straightforward and exactly what he tells you. No trick questions. Be prepared to read the textbook and do the assignment with it. It can take a while sometimes.
Hastie's lectures are a complete waste of time. You can watch them on 5x speed on your own and learn just as much. Hastie could also be super condescending and snappy to students. Material mainly felt like review of 252, so it wasn't difficult, rather just a waste of time.
As a STEM student who has never received a B in college until now, this class is a total nightmare. The Canvas site makes zero sense, the grading policy is ruthless and illogical, and the content of the class as a whole seems unnecessary and turns students away from the field. The work should be easy but is graded insanely harshly. Brace yourself.
In my experience, Hastie is great in other classes, but this one was terrible. Grades harshly on assignments with no rubric or unclear instructions, and is incredibly picky about the smallest details on your assignments. Lecture was fine, but overall unhelpful -- I didn't learn any new material. Canvas was disorganized and due dates were confusing.
One of the most frustrating class structures I've had at UNC. No practice exams given, but then has super weird short answer questions on exams. The whole class is based on peer discussion, which just isn't beneficial in a class like anatomy. If you benefit from that learning style then it could be fine but most people I know it hasn't worked for.
No practice exams, study guides, exam like questions given at all. exams are insanely application heavy when you have no idea how to even study. if you are considering taking 253 with hastie over johnson because he drops an exam- DONT. it is not worth it. Johnson will actually help you thorough the semester so you won't even need to drop one exam.
very hostile and demeaning to students, constantly nitpicking assignments and get upset when students make mistakes, and simple mistakes can cost entire letter grades with his atrocious grading system that makes absolutely zero sense. not only did I learn nothing during this course but I also would consider it a complete waste of time.
This class is very group work and busy work heavy. Assignments come with extremely unclear directions and he will leave condescending and snarky comments on assignments with little mistakes. His canvas site is a mess and makes it hard to keep up with work. He encourages a growth and learning environment but his teaching style is far from it.
This class assigns a ton of busy work that seems like it would be easy to complete. Dr Hastie is extremely picky with his grading system which can cost you an entire letter grade. The grading system for class is based assignments being complete or incomplete where Dr. Hastie would rather give an incomplete than good feedback on what you did wrong.
Dr. Hastie is one of the worst professors I've had at UNC. He has made me hate being a BIOL major and is one of the most condescending professors I have had. Bro thinks he's teaching high schoolers and treats us as such. I wish I could go back and switch my major before I realized how atrocious Hastie and this class was.
Ton of busy work - majority is useless and unrelated to biological concepts. Group projects are fine, but assignment directions are always minimal and vague, yet grading is harsh and nitpicky. Canvas layout is incredibly confusing, and the grading system is a nightmare. TAs are demotivated, confused, and unhelpful, and professor is condescending.
Very condescending and unhelpful. Acts as though he hates students and his job. Rude, awful, stay away from any interactions at all costs. Follow the rubric EXACTLY, and you should have no problems if you avoid him. Has no empathy or interpersonal skills. The entire course was unorganized and a mess. Hard to find information/assignments.
Have had him for other classes, don't know what the issue is with 105L he is hostile toward students, extremely condescending, final project basically determines entire grade with ridiculous grading scale, shouldn't be allowed to teach this class in that way
I got an A, but Biology 105L is a very confusing class. It's easy as long as you do the directions and use your groupchat if you are confused. Hastie is a little condescending, but my main professor was Nevil, who was nicer.
Hastie is a fine person but this class is the biggest waste of time. You can redo every assignment and they're easy but they are graded such that you'll have to waste your time redoing at least half of them. Criteria for assignments is almost never clear and he will reprimand the class for not reading his mind. Useless class for any Bio major.
As someone with zero research experience, I actually enjoyed this class! The assignments can be difficult at times, but just pay attention to the rubric and you will be fine. I found Dr. Hastie funny/nice during class.
BIOL105L is a frustrating class just because directions are often unclear and you rely on group members to contribute to the projects. However, this class helped me master writing lab reports which will be useful for the future. Hastie was helpful during office hours and I find him approachable, I just think the class structure needs work.
The content was fine, but nothing special. The grading system was a huge problem. It is 'ungraded' which in this class means that any mistakes in an assignment result in a zero in the gradebook. It's all or nothing. The grading made the class far more stressful than it should have been. Dr. Hastie is not very empathetic or respectful.
I had Nevil for lecture, but was graded by Hastie since he runs the class. Grading is so confusing and Hastie assumes you should do everything the way he wants it, especially when he doesn't tell you what he expects. His comments were very rude, and the grading style is unforgiving. Everything is disorganized. Pick a good lab group for projects.
Grading system and structure of the class is annoying. The class in general especially in the summer is a TON of busy work for not much return, it's almost all completion based, but again it is a LOT
Took BIOL 105L hybrid over the summer. Class teaches you how to write lab reports and lab techniques. Reports are written in groups, so make sure you pick a good group for the semester. Follow the rubric exactly. Lab TA was Morgan who was very nice and answered all questions. Did not have much interaction with Dr. Hastie who taught the lecture.
said nothing in lectures, but test a lot
he just let us learn EVERYTHING on ourselves and literally teach NOTHING. he went through everything vaguely, leaving us little time to digest
SO MUCH BUSYWORK, I spent more time doing work for this course than my high-level classes. You get MAYBE a two-day heads up before the due date. Insanely tough grading, I follow the instructions and rubric PRECISELY and still get 6/10 with no explanations. Emailed with concerns and he basically responds "sorry you're struggling. try harder."
Grades are heavily dependent on the tests and the tests themself can be difficult due to the very few questions, kind of a weed-out class, many people I know dropped out of the class or switched majors
Professor Hastie is very passionate, funny, and engaging. He truly cares about his students. During week 1, he sent out a little get-to-know-you on Canvas and personally commented on each student's response. He is very intelligent but still simplifies the material very well. I never felt confused during his class. Just go to class and do the GRQs.
Not sure why the rating is so low. The class is easy -> 3 exams, 1 dropped, and a final covering all the topics. I have a 97 right now, right before the final. There are GRQs, Smart Work, and Quizzes through Norton, but you can't get below a 100% if you just do the work (infinite attempts for Smart Work and Quizzes; GRQs are participation).
He is a great professor, super funny and engaging lectures. He made me want to show up to class. That being said, it is a very test heavy class and the way he words some questions makes them seem like tricks. Coming in as a freshman, his class taught me how to actually study. The lab is unnecessarily hard and my TA graded very harsh
In-class lectures make sense, but test questions are worded to confuse you. Compared to other classes, the exams are harder, but he drops some hw and one midterm. Bio lab is the worst thing that will ever happen to you, everything is graded so harshly and points are taken off of everything for no reason.
I've never struggled with any class more than this one. I was spending more time on busywork assignments than on upper-level bio classes. 6-8 due every week and most are 30-40 minute videos with super-specific questions. When I emailed with confusion about the organization he was incredibly rude. Also gave some students an extension but not others.
Prof Hastie didn't do much with Biol 105L. When I did have issues with the lab and tried to go to him, he was rude and unhelpful. He has zero organization at all. When you go to him to ask for help with his horrible organization, he blames it on you. I have talked to other students in the class and this is not an isolated experience with just me.
He is an amazing professor. He is absolutely hilarious and you can tell he is passionate about biology. There is A LOT of work outside of class, but if you focus on it, it helps you A LOT for the tests. Make sure to read the textbook and you will be completely fine. There are so many materials for you to help you succeed in his class.
As a first semester freshman, I was SUPER overwhelmed going into Bio 101 but Dr. Hastie has made it one of my favorite classes!!!!! He is so kind and truly cares for each student, which is rare to see in a lecture of 400+!!!!!!! Would 100/10 recommend taking bio 101 with him!
Dr. Hastie is overall, a really good professor. He truly cares and wants you to succeed. He will not boost your final grade if you're points away from a higher grade. I was .4 away from a B+ and he wouldn't bump up. Go to office hours and build a relationship with him! The best way to succeed in his class.
Dr. Hastie is a funny guy and he really does care about everyone in his classes. I heard going into the course that BIOL101 is pretty hard but as long as you do all of your homework and study for the tests, it's not too bad. The only thing I didn't like was his flipped classroom method meaning all the hw for each lesson is due before class :(
LOVED him as a person. Class was tough, but I also wasn't super locked. Exams are hardish but nothing compared to higher level bio classes. Try not to fall behind bc there is a decent amount of material that piggy backs off of previous topics.
Dr. Hastie is super nice and was great at teaching Bio 101. He drops one of the 3 midterms which really helps your grade and the other assignments are basically participation but you just got to do them nad they will cushion your grade. There are a lot of peer tutors that aren't very helpful but BioCell was helpful if you struggle with this class.
Dr. Hastie was a good professor. It was a lot of self learning but all the information on tests was in the lecture slides. I felt that he did not spend much time on the hardest lessons and I had to teach most of the concepts to myself. Exams were hard but manageable. He records every lecture and very engaging for 400+ person lecture.
Dr. Hastie is an amazing teacher. His lectures were very engaging as I did not fall asleep during the lectures. The tests were average difficulty. The hardest thing to do is figure out what to study and how to study as there lack of resources like practice tests. The load is not a lot but over all the class was excellent. THE CLASS IS FAST PACED!
Really great lecturer and tests aren't too bad. Just do the GRQs and pay attention in class. Lowest midterm dropped is nice too.
Dr. Hastie was a funny and knowledgeable professor. His lectures were enjoyable, and his tests, although tricky, reflected what was taught in class. I definitely spent a few hours a week on this course, especially before a test. One midterm grade is dropped, and you have the opportunity to submit regrade requests on some test questions. Recommend!
Very nice professor. Lectures were good and entertaining. Tests require a good amount of studying but as long as you know all of the learning objectives you will do well on them.
Awesome sauce!
This class was great! The exams were tough and application-based, and your lowest exam grade is dropped. I recommend reviewing the textbook before lecture. There are GRQ and Smartworks assignments due before class. Professor Hastie is funny and caring. I highly recommend this course!
Great guy and lectures well. The exams are difficult compared to what is covered in lecture; many of the questions are very specific and/or were only briefly discussed in class. All information is accessible via past slides, though, and the Canvas is organized. There are also a lot of smaller daily and weekly assignments to keep up with.
He is a great professor and is very kind and understanding. Homework is easy. Tests are kinda tricky even if you feel like you know every little thing. Lectures are fun, and I definitely recommend this course!!
Dr Hastie is kind and a great lecturer. His class was difficult, but there are many resources to help you succeed. There were only three exams and a final, and the readings were pretty easy to complete in 30 minutes (any content on the exams will be in the lecture so it's fine to skim). If you're a STEM major, take Dr Hastie!
Dr. Hastie is a great professor to have for BIO101. His class is very engaging, and he is an entertaining lecturer. The exams can be a little tricky; most of the questions are application-based, but if you utilize your resources and learn how to study early on, you should be ok. He also drops the lowest midterm grade, which is helpful.
Dr. Hastie gave great lectures and explained everything clearly. If you ever had a question you could raise you hand and ask (though I imagine if you were in the far back he might not see you). He'd throw in jokes every so often and there was positive energy throughout. The lectures are recorded and put on canvas after class.
I love Dr. Hastie! He made biology so fun and I think he is a pretty good teacher, 50% of your grade is midterms so really pay attention to the in this course. Pretty easy to do well as along as you study and go to class.
loved taking BIOL 101 with Dr Hastie. the lectures were engaging and he was always accessible through office hours (they're so fun & he has snacks). the tests are more application based but you can find him, talk through it, and ask for regrades on the free response.
The class is test heavy because the midterms (there are 3, 1 will be dropped) are 50% of your grade. Hastie uses a flipped classroom, so the homework and reading is due BEFORE lecture. He uses squarecap for attendance. He is a great lecturer, and he encourages participation and talks to students even with 400+ in the room.
