New professor, very good at teaching the class. I was retaking the course, and he was far better than the last teacher I had. Really accents the use of the computer software, and actually teaches and guides you in its use, generally using lab time very well. Anyone who needs stats 215 would do well to take his class
TAKE HIM NOW! He is an amazing professor, especially on such a difficult subject like statistics. He actually manage to make it fun! Even though attendance isn't mandatory I actually WANTED to go to class because he made it interesting. I would go with this prof. on such a hard subject.
Straight forward prof. Very helpful. Class is well organized. Do homework and labs and you will do well
Prof Helmholt is a fantastic professor. Very easy class. explains concepts very well and makes the material easy to learn and interesting. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
Best professor I have had in awhile! He makes everything clear and understandable. Doesnt give you information you dont need. His tests arent bad if you go to class and do the homework. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! His classes fill up really fast!
I really like this professor! He was very helpful, and he made statistics a great class to take! I loved the in class activities. Make sure you go to class because he does a lot of in class participation. Overall, I received an A in this class. I used the Stats Lab, but overall he was very clear on his teaching! GREAT PROF!! TAKE HIM!!!
The prof explained everything well. Used class activity to clarify information given. The class was super fun and I would definitely recommend him to another student!
I am not a strong numbers person and thought I would struggle with this class. Prof H did a great job of explaining all concepts. Great professor. Take him if you can!!
Prof H is great! He really tries to help you if you don't understand something. I have never taken stats before and he made it easy to understand. He showed us pictures of his kids all the time and made class fun. I would definitely recommend him.
I loved Prof Helholdt! He was really helpful, really clear in his teaching, and really fun. He's also a really nice guy. We used our textbook for the first couple labs, and there is a lot of opportunity for in class activity points you don't want to miss, but I highly recommend him!
He's a great professor. He lets you use a cheat sheet on tests and explains the material very well. He also drops your lowest homework grade at the end of the semester. Always looking for ways to help his students. Definitely take him!
TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! He is the best professor you will ever have for statistics. He is an amazing professor and makes the class a lot of fun. Very easy too with not a ton of work.
Good, funny teacher. I thought stats would be hard, but he really explained the concepts with good examples. I recommend taking him for stats
Definitely take this class with him!!!! Best professor I've had at GVSU yet. He actually understands that we're not all Stats majors! I hated Stats before his class and he made me enjoy it and help me to get better. AWESOME prof.
A professor you will never forget! You will laugh every class, seriously. He loves stats and his job as a professor and it shows through in class. Does an excellent job of blending dry material with fun, engaging activities and examples. Exams were easy as long as you show up for class, do the homework, and look through the notes.
In a word: awesome. Take him for 215. Brings energy to an otherwise dull subject. Go to class, do the homework and you will do well in his class. Best prof I've had at GV.
Probably one of the best professors I have had at GVSU. Very helpful and wants you to do well. Exams are pretty easy and you barely have to crack the book. MAKE A NOTECARD WHEN HE TELLS YOU TOO! Also he is a total babe
He won't tell you the small details such as what an absolute value sign is, so if you haven't taken a math class in a while you'll be struggling to understand what the smaller details are. He tends to rush lectures so if you're a slow note taker you'll miss content and struggle. Rarely follows the book so you can't teach yourself if you get lost.
He expects you will have retained everything from 215 and doesn't do much teaching. Class lectures do not reflect the homework and the tests are questionable as to if the material was covered in class. I took this as a theme class and would not recommend it, it is harder than it sounds.
This class in general is horrible but he makes it tolerable. He teaches stats as if it's not your major (which usually it's not). Really nice guy and very helpful. One of the best teachers at GVSU.
Absolutly amazing class especially if you are a sports nut. the class is pretty straight forward, all you have to do is pay attention. The professor makes the class a lot of fun and relates statistics to sports very well. it is very evident that he has a passion for sports and statistics. overall a great class to take
His notes are easy, but do not correlate with textbook, so follow his notes. Textbook was hardly used, but only for 4-5 times. Approachable, funny, generous, and cute!
Notes were given, simply had to fill in blanks. Not difficult if you paid attention in class and did the assignments. Hard to catch up if you fall behind.
One of the best profs I've ever had, hilarious and a great guy, went all out for Halloween too!
Eric is the best prof!! SO organized, just print out all the notes at once at thats all you need! DO NOT buy the book!! SO helpful and funny! Lectures are great, I never missed a class! Tests are great! Easy A!! Just go to stats center to get homework looked at because there are HW quiz's. best prof out there
Prof H is very entertaining, he is knowledgeable about sports and he is knowledgeable about statistics. If you enjoy learning about sports this is a great class to take, I enjoyed attending.
I would have actually enjoyed the class, if only he taught us about absolute value.
Very good professor. Relates to students very well. The tests were not hard because he prepared you well for them, lets you use a note card and for the final an entire piece of paper front and back. Homework was simple and our quizzes were questions directly from the homework which we were able to use on the quizzes. Great professor, TAKE HIM!
Prof. Helmholdt is a great professor. He makes the material easy to understand and genuinely wants students to understand it. He also has a good sense of humor, especially if you like sarcasm. I'm not a big fan of math or statistics, but the class was somewhat interesting. If you go to class, pay attention and do the labs you should be fine.
TAKE HIM!!!!!!!! I can't stress this enough! He wants all his students to get A's. And he makes it extremely possible. Horrible with numbers or memorizing? Who cares, he lets you use a whole piece of paper for all but the first test for a cheat sheet. Quizzes? ya, they are all over your homework. Which you get to to use your hw!!!
I do not like him. He young, rude and arrogant. His final was ridiculous and other exams pretty hard. He's not a good teacher and often makes you do assignments without properly explaining the material. Awful personality and isn't respected by most students.
Eric acts more as a smart student than a professor, he doesn't take the time to help students when they have questions. Although he does cover material, he goes rather fast. His assignment labs are tough and pretty lengthy. Would never take him again.
Prof Helmholdt is great. His ability to make a dull subject at least somewhat enjoyable is great. Make sure you go to class and do the homework and you should be able to do well in this class, no problem.
At first I thought he was funny and a good teacher, he obviously loves Statistics. However, I wish I would have switched out immediately. He was not very respectful to students and sometimes acted as though he was still in college. He tried to cram as much information in each class period as possible. Avoid if you struggle with math.
He is a super nice guy and he really loves when his students are involved in learning with him. He tries to make the class as fun and interesting as possible. If you don't understand something he does just ask him to explain it again. I hate stats but he made it worth going to. It's a you get what you put into it class.
Really cool class, Helmholdt is more of a bro than a professor. honestly it's just a class to hang out and talk sports - the statistics knowledge required is very basic. projects may be difficult if you don't pay attention, assignments here and there, tests are easy and he allows a cheat sheet. TAKE THIS CLASS!
He really cares about your grade. There is not too much homework and he prepares you very well for the exams. He realizes that a lot of the students in the class are not Stats majors or good with math and he takes this into account. If he his going too fast he will always slow down for you, if you have a question he will always answer it.
Professor Helmholdt was a great professor. I had previously failed stats so I took it again, this time with him and got a B. He is pretty clear on instructions and assignments but if you have any questions ask, he is really helpful. He understands not everyone has the money for textbooks so he doesn't use it. If you're dreading this class get him!
Eric was great! I don't like Stats but I'm glad I had him as my prof oppose to anybody else.
Helmholdt is very funny and makes the class worth going to. Tests are difficult, but there is a cheat sheet. He explains things too fast, so if you miss one class, you feel like you've missed a week. There is homework, but he only grades part of it. There are some in class activities for credit. And extra credit is given, but not many people do it.
Professor Helmholdt was a fun professor, however when it came down to actually teaching I had a hard time keeping up. His lectures are very fast paced, and the notes he has us fill out don't really explain anything in a concise and well-presented manner. I had a hard time staying afloat, but then again I'm not the best with math in general.
In-class assignments about once a week, make sure you're there or you won't get credit. Tests aren't bad, you get a cheat sheet, full size paper front and back. He's good at trying to explain something in a different way if you ask about it. He also offers extra credit for the semester, so do it at the beginning to give yourself a cushion JIC!
I'll first say that you need the book. I never read it but he uses the book for the end of section problems. Overall, he is a good prof who tells you what he expects and delivers through on what he says. I won't say he is easy but if you show up to class and actually do the hw, you'll get an A. DO THE Ex Credit. Mostly an easy A, IF YOU TRY.
Great prof! Very clear with instructions and good at answering questions. Homework can be hard, but Stats help center is a great resource. Allows full page cheat sheet for exams! Super funny, relates to students. Easy class if you go and pay attention. Do not buy textbook. He assigns homework from it but just get the online code.
Helmoldt Was outstanding and a fun class to be in. Hes very funny and is always helpful. If you make sure to put down everything on your cheat sheet for the tests you should do fine on the tests with not too much studying. I would definitely reccomend him, one of the better profs ive ever had. be sure to try to attend every class. Plenty of EC too
Great guy, took a really boring topic (IMO) and made it bearable, explained everything really well, and showed many real world examples. Quiz questions are straight from the homework and you get to use the homework on the quiz. You also get a note card for tests. Good class and great guy.
Personally hate Statistics but he made it tolerable. Has a great personality but wants you to participate. He allowed a full page cheat sheet on each test which was really the only reason I passed. I went to the stat help room every single week because it took me hours to do the homework... Studying is KEY!
Prof Helmholdt was really cool, he was funny and made learning stats actually fun and exciting (really). His lectures were engaging and he made it easy to participate, he also posts notes in the beginning of the semester so you can print them alllll out at once (super handy), his exams weren't bad & MAKE SURE YOU ASK ABOUT USING A FULL CHEAT SHEET!
He is a great professor. He was really funny and made the information pretty easy to understand. He didn't like my section because no one participated. Wrong answers are better than no answers.
10 out of 10 would recommend. -Very knowledgeable, kind, and funny -Homework is quick and easy IMO, 20min tops -Tests are fair and can use cheat sheet (1 side) for each test -Must go to class to fill out notes (dw he makes class as fun as stats can get) -Good amount of EC -If you participate life is much easier -Overall just a great prof!
Professor Helmholdt is awesome! He is very fair with exams, super funny, and his lectures are enjoyable (as enjoyable as statistics can be). He offers a lot of EC, but expects class participation. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Professor Helmholdt is a great guy! Can be funny in classes and very relatable, sometimes he shows up to class in shorts and flip flops, he's more your friend than a professor. Come to class and do the homework and you'll pass. He is more than willing to help, either while you're taking is class or even in the future.
Helmholdt is a solid choice for a stats professor. His class is very structured and he really enjoys teaching his students. He is funny and loves to talk sports. He gives a good amount of extra credit opportunities if you are interested. If you study, participate in class, and do your homework, you'll do well in this class.
He is an awesome professor. I had him for an 8:30 class and he started my day off right. He cares about his students and knows the material really well. You have any question and he is willing to help with examples. His tests are very easy, and he lets you use cheat sheets. He makes this boring class fun. Take stats it with him.
Fantastic guy and teacher. Loves what he does and transfers that love for statistics to his students. Not to mention, the guy's knowledge of statistics and ability to analyze data is ridiculously impressive. If you need a stats class, take it with this guy.
I did not really like him as a prof. He is kind of conceited and I felt lost in almost every class. He gives you an assignment without even telling you what youre supposed to be doing. His exams trick you. He does allow a cheat sheet for exams though. He's not a bad guy but he needs to work on his teaching skills.
Professor Helmholdt is an incredible professor. Lectures are strong and organized. The workload is manageable. You get cheat sheets for tests and plenty of extra credit opportunities. Helmholdt is a great guy, very funny, and makes class fun! I highly recommend taking him!
Honestly really great teacher
Prof is really good at explaining everything, made the material actually semi fun to learn. Your grade consists of homework quizzes and exams, hw quizzes really aren't bad as long as you do the hw which is easy. As for exams, he allows a cheat sheet which was awesome along with 3 pages for the final true mvp right there.
Eric is probably the coolest dude ever. Do the homework, show up to class, and make good cheat sheets for the exams and you will be fine. Unlike a lot of teachers at grand valley he actually wants you to do well, so take advantage of his office hours because he will answer all of your questions and make sure you know what you need to do to succeed.
If you need to take STA 215, take Professor Helmholdt. He is the best teacher I have had at GVSU. He take fairly difficult material and makes it approachable and easy to learn. He has the best approach to learning I have seen ever. But, you need to be in class, do the HW and take the exams. Do not be an idiot and not come to class.
He is a great professor. He has true enthusiasm and humor for a boring subject. He takes care of grading quickly and you will know exactly where you stand. Take him.
He may know the material but is horrible at teaching it. He is very unclear about everything and contradicts himself constantly about what is expected. He offers lots of extra credit to make up for the fact that many people are failing without it. Class is often easy and fun to attend and 6-9s are usually let out early. Prepare for arrogance.
He's an okay professor. His lectures are really confusing and he never makes sense and goes very fast. He won't clear things up without anyone asking either. I never learned anything in class, I learned by making my cheat sheet which you're allowed for each exam. 6-9 always got out early.
I am almost done with the summer format of the class. It was doable, and I have managed thus far. I will say, however, that Prof. Helmholdt is not always super clear in his instructions/explanations, and the tests seemed to be all our grade was determined by. Then again, the normally-15-week class was condensed into 6 weeks.
Favorite professor I've had so far at Grand Valley. The 6 week semester although fast (duh) didn't feel rushed through. Participation encouraged. In class activities so you can't really skip the class. Fill in note template for the whole semester which made note taking much easier for it.
Obviously hardly anyone loves Stats. I failed twice due to mono one semester and being up at the hospital all of another semester. In 7 weeks Professor Helmholdt helped me achieve a good grade and made Stats moderately fun. He is by far the best teacher I have had for that course and is always willing to help. Gives quite a bit of EC as well!
By far my favorite professor since i've attended Grand Valley thus far. His level of patience, understanding, and leniency is without a doubt unable to be matched. I came into this class during this summer semester hating the thought of taking stats at an accelerated pace, but professor Helmholdt made it very possible to get through it all.
I went into this class originally hating statistics but I left enjoying it so much! Prof. Helmholdt is very clear with his lectures and what exactly he wants from you being in his class. He gave our class a lot of extra credit opportunity and he is also hilarious!
Really cared whether students learned the material or not. Very laid back and gave many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Uses online textbook for homework questions and gives you outlines for notes. Study guides also given. Exams are usually straight forward. In class assignments, so go to class.
Took it in the summer. Made the information easy to learn. Handed out outline for note taking. Very good professor.
Best professor I have had in my 3 years at GVSU. He's hilarious, and knows how to teach the information. Offers a lot of extra credit but do not take his class thinking you can skip a lot because in-class participation is a good part of your grade and helps a lot when it comes to taking his exam. Only 2 exams.. allows cheat sheets for every one.
Eric is a really personable man. You can tell he really likes stats(almost as much as he likes being a pepper/his family, he enjoys his all "J" fam). As for the stats, I'd say the only thing he needs to figure out is better ways to help study for the test, yes he gives answers to the study guides, but I feel that he needs better practice problems.
Pretty funny, can be condescending at times but you'll realize he's just a little teddy bear.
Eric is a good stats professor. He does a good job keeping class interesting on a not so interesting subject. Not too much homework and he has a lot of opportunities for extra credit!
Professor H. was super funny and made the information easy to understand. Relevant examples were given all the time and alternative explanations were provided when asked. His extra credit questions are gold on the exams, so funny! All around a really nice and caring professor that's still clinging to the chili pepper.
He's a great teacher, and he really enjoys statistics. I felt I understood the material in class and on the homework, But I never did well on the tests (timed), even with the note pages that he allows. Usually offers a curve too, but it did not get me far. He does offer plenty of extra credit, but the tests brought made it hard to get a good grade.
Honestly, Professor Helmholdt is the best professor I've had at Grand Valley. He was super funny, passionate about the topic, and definitely prepared us for the exams! Minimal homework, outlined notes, many extra credit opportunities, and reasonable exams! Plus, he brings his kids to class sometimes and they're stinkin' adorable. Take him!
Good guy, made stats very approachable. Big fantasy football nerd, and unfortunately does not receive the pepper
One of the best professors I've ever had. He really cares and wants his students to succeed and does his best to help and make that happen. He somehow manages to make stats fun. Pretty much just gotta show up to class and you'll do fine. I would highly recommend getting into his class.
Great Professor. Is very laid back and very clear at explaining stats to even someone who used to hate it. You get to make cheat sheets for every exam. You have to come to class though for participation assignments. Gives out a lot of extra credit. He cares about keeping the red pepper on here and definitely explains what an absolute value sign is.
Personally I rank professor Helmholdt as one of my top 3 professors I have had. He is genuine, caring and wants you to succeed. Professor H. puts in time to help you learn if you participate in class. Overall fun, exciting even during an 8:30am.
Definitely one of my top 5 favorite professors. You print off notes and do that for just about every class. You can use a cheat sheet on the exams and there's always a curve. Amazing professor and all around good guy.
Best Prof. outside of my major by far. Would love to take other classes with him. Easy but yet you learn thing your supposed to. Plus he is fun and funny
Eric so far is my favorite Professor at GV, he is hilarious and his lectures are fun. Stats 215 is not fun and pretty hard but he truly makes it interesting and learnable. Great Prof, definitely should take him. His exams are hard but he does give partial credit and allows several cheat sheets. If you have to take STA 215 take Eric!
Great professor! You get cheat sheets you can keep using on the next exams and he is a great teacher highly recommend
Hilarious, actually makes me wanna come to class. Loves it when you participate and ask questions. And if you wanna get on his good side talk to him about his kids, cause he LOVESS talking about them.
Expected a dull class, instead ended up wanting to go to class. Amusing lectures, good explanations, all around a great instructor. Offers extra credit. If he asks a question, go ahead and answer even if you're uncertain. He prefers wrong answers over no answers. Participation can earn you some extra credit. Wish he taught more classes.
He is a great professor!!!!!!!!! He really cares about the students success. He explains terms very well and adds a lot of humor to the class. I am sorry that they took the spicy pepper off this site ;( . P.S I am breaking the non-response bias!!!!
Helmholdt is the best choice for stats! Pretty nice guy, makes an effort to create a relationship with the class. Kinda picky with grading exams, but he lets you make a cheat sheet for every exam.
8 HW assignments, posed as quizzes- drops the lowest grade. No attendance, but does in-class assignments so if you skip class you will lose points, which is very annoying. Says you cannot make up HW/quizzes but allows select students to? Notes every day, and provides a fill in sheet for them. 2 exams, 1 final. Allows cheat sheets. Few EC opps.
He is an awesome professor. If you ask him questions he is very understanding and makes sure you understand the material. You are allowed a cheat sheet on every test and 3 on the final. He is very kind and makes dad jokes a lot. PARTICIPATION MATTERS. He will boost your final grade if he thinks you participated enough.
Great prof if you are scared about taking stats because he makes it simple, gives extra credit opportunities, hilarious, easy and clear notes, tests aren't easy but not impossible to get a decent grade on, get a cheat sheet for every test, if you want your grade bumped at the end participation is key, make friends, quizzes are questions from hw
Took this class as an 8am MWF- which is tough for this class because missing a class could mean missing out on his in random class assignments (which you can't make up and are essential to getting a good grade). He's a cool guy and pretty funny, although he didn't get many laughs from an 8am class. Would take him again!
One of GVSU's best professors, especially for stats. Spoon feeds you the material. Idk how people don't get A's with Prof H. He's hilarious and makes class enjoyable. Exams are just like homework and classwork. Also lets you use a cheat sheet on exams so it's honestly hard to not do well in his class lol. Great guy would recommend x100
Helmholdt is a cool guy. He moves a little fast, but makes sure there isn't any questions and is willing to help after class or in office hours. He keeps you awake throughout lecture, and gives credit on assignments & homework, so you're not just graded on the exams. Extra credit is present. If you pay attention, its an easy A-B.
Such a great prof! Class is very clear with expectations & if you show up to class its really easy to do well. You get to make a formula sheet for all of the exams & use them on the final. As long as you are willing to participate and show up to class, its really easy. He is super funny & always makes class entertaining. Definitely recommend him!!
Hes a good prof but the class is somewhat hard. You either understand it or you dont. He lets you use notes on your exams- but that doesnt help to much. He also says you can get SPSS on your laptop... YOU CANT. So you have to go to the lab for all of your homework assignments. Random in class assignments so you cant skip class.
Professor Helmhold said the stats of him getting more bad reviews is higher than good reviews, so here you go. He's the best prof and I highly recommend. He is always available for extra help, gives great notes, and is absolutely hilarious. All around a great guy who cares about class and his students. Take him, you won't regret it!
Helmholdt is the prof to take for Stats 215. He was always engaging and helpful inside of the classroom and even available through email. Hilarious guy as well. Definitely one of my favorites so far!
Hilarious guy! He makes class time engaging & interesting, despite the dry material! If you show up to class, you'll do well. He gives a few in-class activities and many easy homework quizzes. 1 cheat sheet for every exam, 3 for the final. Take advantage of it! Lots of Extra Credit opportunities too. Stats does not come naturally to me, but I aced.
Prof Helmholdt is one of the best professors that I've ever had! If you pay attention in class and do the HW you'll be fine. Super funny and really cares about his students. Makes the lessons fun and engaging. THE prof to take for 215! Do yourself a favor and take his class
Ive always struggled with math, but I genuinely enjoyed this class. Professor Helmholdt was clearly knowledgeable about the subject and was good at explaining the material. He was funny and passionate during lectures. Im actually going to miss this class and I hate stats so much.
Helmholdt is an alright professor, hes funny and outgoing. However, his teaching style is kinda outdated its fill in the notes as you go and an example here and there. He doesnt really go out of his way to make sure all the students understand the material. I received an A in the class but he definitely should switch it up a bit.
Alright professor, hes funny but kinda comes off as a know it all
Honestly I haven't ever rated a professor before, but I figured I had to rate this dude because he was honestly my favorite professor ever. If you enjoy sports and math, this class will be the best, I actually enjoyed showing up to class. This professor wants you to succeed and will help you if you ask. Would definitely take again for a stats class
Im really bad at math but helmholt made stats understandable. If you not sure of something he's really approachable. You can tell he really care about his job and his students. He give reviews before exams which are really helpful and exams are not bad if you review the notes and homework. There are weekly quizzes but its over hw answers
Helmholdt is an awesome guy. If you enjoy sports and stats, this is the guy. Class did not have much structure and kind of did random assignments every week. It isn't an easy A, but if you show up and pay attention, then you should do just fine. Had a few group projects, which weren't insanely difficult. Would definitely take him again if I could.
Honestly my favorite professor so far at GV. He will keep you laughing and entertained even in a 6-9. Overall, this professor is a great guy standup guy that anyone can get along with.
Prof. Helmholdt is the best professor I've had at GV! He is super understanding and is able to put things in very simple terms to explain concepts. He is very laid back, but make sure to do the homework because there will be weekly quizzes completely based off of your homework answers, so they're super easy! Highly recommend!
Due to the covid, I was not able to meet professor helmholdt in person, but just from watching the videos he puts out I already liked him. His lectures are very helpful, this class is pretty easy overall, of course it is not just show up and free A that type of class but if you put in 5-10 hours a week outside of class time it is an easy A.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. I struggle with math but he made this class so easy. Very good at lecturing, cares about his students, is funny and a reasonable grader. He gives you plenty of opportunities for extra credit and is quick to answer emails. Makes the classroom a welcoming, encouraging and nonjudgemental atmosphere. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!
Professor Helmholdt is a great professor to have for STA 215. He gives extra credit and the exams are super easy if you study. Make sure to study the review guide and know how to do the problems and you will be fine for the exams. He also gives a curve if the average is below 75. I highly recommend taking him, was never stressed about this class.
Prof Helmholdt is an awesome guy. I participated in his class online. As long as you pay attention to his lecture videos/notes, you will do fine.
Great guy, fun class IF you know your sports. Group projects as well, which didn't go super great since two of my partners didn't know anything about baseball other than that you use a bat. Lots of little homework assignments and betting, but if you make an effort, you'll pass no problem.
Took him my winter semester and many students and I barely passed the class. Funny teacher but not the best teacher. Class averages for tests were 75 percent and the final was between 65 and 68 percent even admitted that it was his fault the average was low. The assignments were weird and confusing. Would not take again and dont recommend him
Definitely recommend for Stats 215. Math is not really my thing but I enjoyed his class a lot. He is funny, lectures were easy to understand, gives extra credit, and great with responding to emails.
Amazing prof! I am not a math person, but thank god he is a sporty guy! Most of his examples are on sports. Test averages were often low throughout the entire class and were given huge curves. Many extra credit opportunities in this class (DO THEM!). Did not have to stress about this class. Take him 100%.
Best professor ever. He took over my class when we had an unexpected passing of my professor. did as good as he possibly could and he cares so much about his students and he actually makes class enjoyable. Im not a math person but I love this class. isnt intimidating so dont be afraid to ask questions. He also likes wrong answers over no answers
Professor H is always in a good mood and energetic which makes it easy to pay attention in his class. Always willing to answer questions and offers numerous opportunities for extra credit. If you go to class, do the extra credit, and attend exam review session you will likely have no issues. Highly recommend!
One of the best profs. Ive ever had. His lectures were very entertaining and easy to follow/ learn. He goes over plenty of examples. My one piece of advice for his class is participation is key :)
Helmholdt is a great teacher, classes consist of note taking and in class activities. It is very clear what is expected of you in this class and if you attend class and are involved you should have no problem getting a good grade. So important to be involved in the class!!! It my be the difference of passing this class in the end! Highly recommend
I struggled in stats, but I put in the time to go to the stats center and worked through it. Prof H makes sure to help you out if you are participating (if you are at an 88% and he see's you have been participating all semester and trying, he will bump it up a bit). VERY helpful, and makes class fun. Take him! He will help.
Really fun class. Very fair workload. Prof H is easy to talk to and wants students to be interested. Some projects are hard to understand the exact requirements but overall great class.
First of all I wish the chili pepper was still a thing. But anyway, Helmholdt is super funny and I really enjoyed having him as my prof. Stats is def not my favorite thing but the notes and assignments were pretty straightforward. Participation matters! He 100% prefers wrong answers over no answers
Prof H was a great prof!! I took STA 215 with him and his class was so fun and engaging. If you pay attention in class and follow the notes, the exams will be easier. Also, he lets you have a notecard and cheat sheets which is EXTREMELY helpful on exams!! If he tells you do make a notecard for something, do it!! I would definitely take him again :)
Prof H. did a great job explaining content and making it v understandable. We had in-class activities that helped me understand the concepts and created an engaging class atmosphere. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND him as a prof to anyone taking a STA course! He wants the best for his students and stresses availability to help students who need extra help.
This professor is super approachable and his lectures are fun! (ik weird) He made what could have been such a difficult subject, pretty digestible. It is SO important to go to class everyday (literally don't skip), and make sure you go through all the hw problems. His exams are pretty straightforward, he doesn't try to trick you here.
For a math class, I didn't hate going because of Professor H. He tried his best to make statistics interesting by giving a lot of examples and connecting aspects of the class to things in our every day lives. He was funny and approachable. He gave a few extra credit opportunities. I was able to end with a high A. Do the HW and you'll be fine! :)
My favorite prof ever! Never thought I would pass stats but I ended up with over 100% he gives so many extra credit & test corrections opportunities & lets you use cheat sheets for every exam. Easy class but I actually learned A LOT and the info has stuck with me. He really wants students to understand the info instead of just memorizing for exams.
This guy is one of my favorites so far at GV. He communicates well, is funny, and once you get used to SPSS or whatever you end up using in the class for homework, everything is very straight forward. Homework load is slightly on the lighter side, and as most stats professors do, he grades exams on a curve. Very simple calss though.
Expected a lot more from this class. Helmholdt put forth minimal effort towards lecture material and did a poor job explaining course content in a concise and effective manner. The coursework itself isn't too challenging, but the lack of clear instructions made many assignments difficult. Overall, the class is boring and left much to be desired.
Our in-person section was very scattered. The school did change STA books. He made the tests way harder than what was in our notes&he admitted he made them to hard. Our tests got a huge curve. Not the best at explaining but he did have moments where he was organized. Do the extra credit because it is easy points. Hw every week but not that bad.
I loved Professor Helmholdt! I took this section as a hybrid class and we only met on days for the exams (3 of them!). He does offer for the online students to attend the in-person session, I would recommend it if you can go. If you need lots of help with any math, I wouldn't suggest taking it online, but I would recommend this prof! He is awesome!
Loved Professor Helmholdt! I was very worried about the class, being a non-math person, but ended with almost 100% He is very accessible, wants his students to succeed, and adds a large curve to exams. He offers ten points of easy extra credit.
I took this class online and he allows you to work ahead. I finished the class very quickly, there are 8 chapters of notes, 10 homework assignments and 3 exams with the final being cumulative of all course material.
Helmholdt is a very good professor with good lectures that really helped on homework assignments and activities. Exams were not bad and allowed one side of a sheet of paper for notes to use.
I feel like if it wasn't an online class it would have been easier. I will say he did the best he good given the circumstances. Tests were hard but if you are confused he is the best at answering emails and really does not want anyone to fail. He was really funny when we did the zooms for the first 1/2 of the semester. Would take him in person
Professor H is excellent for teaching this course online. The lectures were straight to the point, and taught me what I needed to know. Homework is difficult at first, but once you figure out SPSS it's a breeze. Exams are mostly written, but cheat sheets are very forgiving. Fantastic professor if you're not a stats major.
Horrible explainer of things to those who don't know math. Doesn't care for student concerns. Expects everyone to know how to use Excel and SPSS as well as he does and marks down if you don't. Also thinks everyone remembers everything from STA 215, which for some was taken Freshman year. Thought it would be more sports than stats, but I was wrong.
A great professor - explained things really well, and was always available to answer questions or clarify things on assignments. Also gave plenty of extra credit opportunities, and was super easy to talk to. Was honestly a fun class!
He was okay. He graded pretty harshly on some stuff and has made some pretty rude remarks on some of my work. But, he was always understanding and accessible outside of class so if you have any questions hes available. I didn't know much about sports so I struggled a bit, he wants you to know your stuff so if you don't, this class isn't for you
I would definitely recommend taking Professor Helmholdt! He is clear about expectations, deadlines, and criteria. If you attend class, participate, and do your work, you will do great! His lectures are well-organized and helpful. Overall, He is a great professor who cares about his students. In addition, he is hilarious and makes stats fun!!!
Professor H's STA215 class is a good option, especially for non-math majors. The lectures are straightforward, and the homework gets easier once you figure out SPSS. Exams can be challenging but allow cheat sheets. Plus, Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep!
He is a great professor, but he could go a little more in-depth with some of the concepts. He is straightforward; he tells you what he expects of you from the start. He lets you have a notation note card and a cheatsheet one-sided. He answers his emails as fast as he can and office hours are very helpful.
would not recommend this professor.
This class was a disaster. If you're not obsessed with the professor's favorite sports-football,baseball you're out of luck. The professor prioritized personal interests over teaching.Blackboard was disorganized, missed deadlines zero reminders. Extra credit was based on random sports facts, not class material.Professor was uncaring and disorganized.
He was enthusiastic about sports every day. However, when it came to teaching he was not the best. Also, horrible organization the class was all over the place. Rarely knew when homework was due, or where to access it. Fun class but tougher than I originally thought. Exams in person
Professor Helmholdt is very passionate about sports but is a terrible professor. He comes to class enthusiastic every day but barely covers content that will be on the exams. There was no set schedule or grading sheet for us to break down points. Everything was all over the place and due dates were hard to find. This class WAS NOT an easy A.
Professor Helmholdt is a very chill professor that enjoys sports like most students taking the course. The projects are fun and enjoyable to work on. The HW can be tricky as there is not a lot of instruction on formatting and guidelines but he gives a few extra credit opportunities throughout the semester to earn back those points.
Prof H is the best professor I have had at GV. I took this class online but he still was able to make time to answer my questions and meet with me. He's very understanding and willing to help you out as long as you're putting in the effort. I struggle with math but he made Stats so simple, and provided amazing practice problems similar to the exam.
Bro is to the point in his lecture videos and he makes the material easy to understand. Plus he's funny; he had me crying when he said his kids' heads were huge. Tests were easy if you understand the all the stuff outlined on the study guide. HW and labs are straight forward.
Sports Statistics is NOT a blowoff class it is more stats then sports. Prof is very passionate about sports and stats but I wish he spent more time in class going over the math and equations. Outside of class resources are rough, he does not offer study guides or practice problems so studying for exams is hard. Exams are very difficult.Verynice guy
He is a very nice guy, and he makes his lectures fun and interesting. Although attendance is technically not mandatory, I highly recommend going to lectures as much as possible. He also gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. I would definitely recommend him.
